Q: Can you tell me when my guilty pleasure, “The Royals,” will be back with a new season? — Melinda W., via email A: The fourth season of the campy, soapy drama returns to E! on March 11 at 10 p.m. ET/PT with 10 brand-new one-hour episodes. The latest season of “The Royals” picks up after the charming and potentially duplicitous Prince Robert (Max Brown) is crowned King of England. Prince Liam

(William Moseley) and his recently dethroned uncle Cyrus (Jake Maskall) form an unlikely alliance;

Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley) struggles to control her unruly brood as she figures out her role in the palace. And, after a heated on-again/offagain relationship, bodyguard Jasper (Tom Austen) tries to capture the heart of Princess Eleanor (Alexandra Park) one more time just as they are about to face their biggest obstacle yet. The series also stars Genevieve Gaunt as Wilhelmina. “The Royal Hangover,” which is the digital companion series to the scripted program, also will return March 11. Q: Any chance of “Downward Dog” returning? We loved Nan, the lead character, and her dog, Martin, whose expres-

DEAR DR. ROACH: I hear music playing in my head at all times. I can’t stop it, even if I’m reading, having a conversation or being active. It’s there when I wake up in the night

or in the morning. Even if I consciously stop it and try to hear only the ambient sounds around me, the music always comes back. Is this indicative of any major problems? I am a very healthy 64-year-old male, and this is annoying. It has been going on for most of my life. I wonder if a psychiatrist could help. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. — S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head.

One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders. However, my experience is that there are many, many normal people with no psychiatric illness who have music playing in their head almost all the time or all the time. Many people have had a song stuck in their head (often

Did you know? Recycling paper benefits the environment in a myriad of ways. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recycling paper reduces greenhouse gas emissions that can contribute to climate change by avoiding methane emissions and reducing the energy required for

a number of paper products. Recycling paper also contributes to carbon sequestration, which is the process through which agricultural and forestry practices remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The Eco Preservation Society notes

that carbon sequestration activities can help prevent global climate change by enhancing carbon storage in trees and soils, preserving existing tree and soil carbon and by reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. Recycling paper also reduces the need for a substantial amount of landfill space and cuts back on the consumption of energy and water that is necessary to produce new paper products. Businesses looking to reduce reliance on paper can urge employees, clients and partners to use digital documents in lieu of printed documents, while private citizens can opt out of paper statements and choose to receive e-statements from their banks, mobile providers and utility companies.

sion and voice was so lovable. — Jan G., via email A: ABC canceled “Downward Dog” back in June, after the sixth episode aired. (All eight episodes eventually did air.) According to the show’s producers, ABC “loved it creatively and really wanted to make more, but couldn’t find a financial plan to do so. ... We are deeply personally thankful to them for putting this show on the air and allowing us to make something really unique and uncompromising.” At the time of the previous announcement, producers also stated their intention of shopping the show around to other networks. As of this writing, it has not found a

new home, so it’s looking like that plan is dead in the water.

called an “earworm”), but a few people have this continuously. I had one patient in whom this was a major source of distress, and in that case, it appeared to be related to the use of an antidepressant. Solving anagrams and reading are supposed to help, but in your case I am almost sure that would be temporary. Sometimes playing the music that is in your head can stop it. There are a few case reports of treatment with medication (such as carbamazepine) being effective, but sometimes reassurance that this is almost normal makes it easier to deal with. DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are

benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? — K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of. In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous. You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed. Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later

Q: Over the holidays I rewatched “Never Been Kissed,” which I love, and it got me to wondering what David Arquette is up to now. What does he have upcoming? — Kaylie F., via Twitter A: David recently signed on to join the cast of “Memphis Fire,” a new comedy about firefighters, based in Memphis, Tennessee. David plays Johnny Roberts, aka “Chief Roberts,” a lovable screw-up who tries to keep everyone in his family and fire-station crew from setting themselves on fire. Chief loves his fam-

ily, his city and pancakes, in that order. A simple man, he became a firefighter because his father was a firefighter, then was promoted to chief simply because he had been there the longest. The show also stars Noel Gugliemi, Peter Organ and Jeryl Prescott, along with show creator Derrick Redford.

The pilot of the series is currently being filmed, most likely for the 2018-19 television season, with no word yet on which network might pick it up and when.

on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question. Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent. Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. IN BRIEF

Artist makes icy eye-catchers

By Sean Mott Staff Writer

For the first time in 30 years, Kelly Patterson invested in a pair of longjohns. It was one of his many layers as he worked in front of his Simpson Street home in December. He had to work in 15 minute bursts, retreating into his house to warm up for 30 minutes. “I’m not a real big fan of the cold,” he said. While most people in Yorkton cranked up their heat and bundled up in their blankets during the big chill in December, Patterson forced himself outside. It was cold enough before he started working with ice. He could feel the frigid temperature through

his gloves. But he kept going, working on his project for close to a week. Finally, he stepped back and admired his work. He was done. Three massive ice sculptures stood on his lawn. Patterson is an artist. His collection of paintings, “Surface and Seduction,” was featured at the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery last September. This year, he tried his hand at winter sculpting. “This is the first time I’ve done anything like [this] with ice,” he said. Patterson bought a series of plastic containers of varying shapes. He filled them with water and left them outside overnight. In the morning, he slid the

plastic off and picked up his smooth ice blocks. That’s when the real work started. Patterson stacked the blocks into a tower shape, delicately balancing them. He filled balloons with water and food colouring, froze them, and put them on top of the structures. “It freezes like concrete,” he said. Patterson dosed the towers with water from a spray bottle, which froze and held them together, He hollowed them out and filled them with lights so they glowed in the night. “I didn’t want it to look too Christmas-y,” he said. Patterson has seen dozens of people get out of their cars and snap photos

of his icy installations. “My favourite part has been seeing people’s reaction to it,” he said. “That’s been the biggest kick for me.” Patterson calls his three towers a “proof of concept.” Next year, he wants to take everything he learned about ice sculptures and create something even bigger. “Next year, it’s going to be epic,” he said. “Something grand, like a castle. “I’m really excited.” The sculptures will stay up for as long as the cold weather allows. “I’m sure it’s going to be freezing after February, so [you’ve got] lots of time to enjoy them,” Patterson said.

Antique vehicle definition changed On Jan. 1, 2018, the definition of an antique vehicle changed from “vehicles 30 years old or older” to “vehicles that are model year 1987 and older.”

This change means vehicles with a model year of 1988 and newer will not be eligible for Antique Use. The change does not impact any vehicles currently regis-

tered with Antique Use. “This change is about addressing an imbalance,” said Penny McCune, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the

years, while Arnold and Koshman got pins for 60 years of service. Speakers at the event commended the men for their dedication and generosity to the Legion and the Yorkton community.

After SGI consulted with car clubs and antique vehicle enthusiasts, it was decided that the fairest option to address this imbalance was to cap the antique class at the 1987 model year, rather than increase rates for all antique vehicles. If your vehicle is a true vintage vehicle that is only used on special occasions, there are other registration options

available. For example, the vehicle could be registered short-term (i.e. during the summer months). Other options for vehicles that are being used occasionally are to purchase 24-hour or 8-day permits. Your motor licence issuer can help you with the best option for your situation. Further information on antique vehicle registration is available at www.sgi.sk.ca.

Auto Fund. “The intent of the Antique Use class, when originally created, was to accommodate vintage vehicles that were used infrequently – for parades, special occasions or Sunday drives. But we’re seeing more and more antique-registered vehicles driven as regular-use vehicles; daily in many cases. Because they’re insured at such a low cost, this does not adequately provide for the injury and liability claim payouts in the event of a collision.” While physical damage coverage for antique vehicles is limited to $800, full liability and injury benefits are provided. All antique vehicles pay the same insurance premium ($85 + PST annually), regardless of vehicle make or body style. The number of vehicles registered as antique in Saskatchewan has increased by 55 per cent over the past five years and the total number of vehicles registered as antique involved in claims has grown by 31 per cent since 2011.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “It” (R) — A supernatural force (Bill Skarsgard) awakens every 27 years in the town of Derry, Maine, to haunt and hunt the town’s children. A ragtag group of kids, some with demons of their own, band together to avenge a loved one and assert themselves in the face of this deadly terrorizer who takes the shape of its prey’s deepest fears. It’s based on a novel by horror master Stephen King, and director Andy Muschietti takes the solid story and backs it up with frighteningly memorable visuals. The kids are great,

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Guess what, Lamb? You’re about to experience a new perspective on a situation you long

Bill Skarsgard in “It” including the recently famous Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things.” And the film is a phenomenon. My 9-year-old knows who Pennywise the Dancing Clown is, even though she has decidedly not seen the movie. If you like scary, this should already be on

your preorder list. “The Foreigner” (R) — An IRA blast in London takes the life of a score of people, among them a bright young teen shopping for a prom dress. She also happens to be the daughter and last living relative of an unassuming

regarded quite differently. What you learn could open more opportunities later. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bold Bovine

is tempted to charge into a new venture. But it might be best to take things one step at a time, so that you know just where you are at any given point. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good time to go on that fun getaway you’ve been planning. You’ll return refreshed, ready and, yes, even eager to tackle the new challenge that awaits you.

Chinese immigrant restaurant owner, Quan (Jackie Chan). As the political blame game and intrigue heat up, Quan sets out for justice, focusing on Irish government official and former IRA sympathizer Liam Hennessy (Pierce Brosnan). Quan’s long-buried violent past serves him expertly in his quest for revenge. I think of Jackie Chan as the smiling, charismatic, death-defying kung-fu master, but here is a darker, stoic Chan, completely out of character and a reminder that he is an actor first. “My Little Pony: The Movie” (PG) — The world of Equestria, which is perfect and wonderful, is suddenly threatened by an outside force. This can be handled only by princess pony Twilight Sparkle, who

will try to go it alone until her friends remind her that friendship is magic and friends help friends (and there is singing). Yes, the story is familiar, and you’ve seen some iteration of this movie before. But you haven’t seen it with these songs or these stars (Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Michael Pena, Liev Schreiber, Sia). How do you review a bag of cotton candy? It’s essentially just a little pile of colored sugar all fluffed up and arranged on a stick. But it’s somehow charmed, and the kids go nuts for it. Same here. Don’t think too hard; just enjoy. “Marshall” (PG-13) — In director Reginald Hudlin’s biographical drama, we enter the court system of 1940 in one of then-ACLU lawyer

Thurgood Marshall’s first cases. Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), a white socialite in Bridgeport, Connecticut, accuses her chauffer Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown) of rape and attempted murder. A young Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) is sent in to defend him, assisted by local white lawyer Sam Friedman (Josh Gad). The compelling story is matched perfectly with compelling performances.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child loves to fantasize about magical happenings in the early part of the week. But the sensible Crab gets down to serious business by week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) What goes around comes around for those lucky Leos and Leonas whose acts of generosity could be repaid with opportunities to expand into new and exciting areas of interest. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your concern about your job responsibilities is commendable. But you need to take some quiet time to share with someone who has really missed being with you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Aspects favor getting out and meeting new people. And as a bonus, you might find that some of your newly made friends could offer important business contacts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might take pride in wanting to do everything yourself. But now’s a good time to ask family members to help

with a demanding personal situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Pay more attention to the possibilities in that workplace change. It could show the way to make that long-sought turn on your career path. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your need to succeed might overwhelm obligations to your loved ones. Stay healthy in winter (NC) — Winter can be the most wonderful time of year. What’s better than the crisp air, making snow angels and a warm cup of tea? For some of us, however, winter can also bring about the cold and flu, dry skin and a downturn in our health goals. Here, the Canadian Health Food Association shares some top tips and natural remedies to keep these common winter health concerns at bay. Say no to cold and flu. If you’re plagued with a runny nose, ceaseless coughing, a fever and pounding headache, try a zinc supplement. It can speed up recovery and has been shown to prevent rhinovirus (the most common cause of a cold) from reproducing. When purchasing supplements, always look for the eight-digit Natural Product Number (NPN). This certifies that Health

Canada has reviewed and approved the product for safety, efficacy and quality. Consuming plenty of vitamin C-rich foods like bell peppers; dark, leafy greens and citrus fruits is also an effective preventative measure against colds. Another way to combat the cold and flu is to supplement with echinacea. Just remember that time is of the essence — it’s important to begin using it as soon as symptoms appear. Skin sense. Combine colder temperatures outside with indoor heating, and what you get is a recipe for dry skin. If your skin has a tendency to dry out, start by looking at your diet. Healthy fats, such as the omega-3 fatty acids in fish and flaxseeds, along with antioxidants like vitamin A, can help skin maintain its elasticity. Natural oils like coconut act as

emollients that provide a softening effect. Other helpful oils include grapeseed oil, sea buckthorn oil, argan oil and vitamin E, which all help to lock in moisture and heal damaged skin. Stay warm. A regimen that consists of regular exercise will get your blood pumping and blood vessels dilating, distributing warmth to your body’s extremities. A good workout also burns calories, a process that produces lasting heat. Plus, the rush of endorphins we get from exercising is another benefit, as they help to balance mood so we can combat winter blues.

HOLLYWOOD — Renee Zellweger, whose last musical film was the Oscar-winning “Chicago” (2002), is taking on playing the iconic Judy Garland during the final six months of her life in the film musical “Judy.” Zellweger, 47, will play Judy at 46 doing five weeks of concerts at London’s Talk of the Town as she battled her managers (who were robbing her blind), her relationships (she wed musician Mickey Deems March 15, 1969), musicians and fans.

Renee Zellweger The film will feature some of Garland’s best-known songs. In 2001, ABC aired the two-part mini-series

“Me and My Shadow: A Family Memoir,” based on her daughter Lorna Luft’s book, which won five Emmy Awards, including best actress for Judy Davis, who played Garland. Judy Garland died June 22, 1969, at 47, three months and seven days after marrying Mickey Deems. Cher is returning to the big screen in the sequel “Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again.” Returning from the original “Mamma Mia” (2008) are Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard and Julie Walters. New to the

sequel are Andy Garcia, as Fernando (an Abba song title), Lily James, as the young Meryl Streep, and Cher as Streep’s mother, Ruby Sheridan. The film features three Abba songs, “When I Kissed the Teacher,” “I Wonder (Departure)” and “Angeleyes.” Does Cher sing? We’ll find out July 20. James Franco’s film “The Disaster Artist” (which he directed and played the man who made, arguably, the worst film ever) is having success, already grossing $16.7 million of its $10 million budget in limited release. Franco and the film were nominated for Golden

Globes as best actor and best picture (in a musical or comedy). His next project will be directing and voicing the computeranimated film “Arctic Justice: Thunder Squad,” with Heidi Klum, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin and Anjelica Huston, opening Jan. 26. Franco has completed acting in and directing “Zeroville,” with Will Ferrell, Seth Rogan, Megan Fox, Danny McBride and Dave Franco. Alec Baldwin has really amped up his movie career because of all the fire from “Saturday Night Live” and his portrayal of Donald Trump. In addition to “Zeroville” and

“Downsizing,” he’s got a major role in “Mission Impossible 6,” with Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Michelle Monahan and Angela Bassett, opening July 27. He’s just completed filming “The Private Life of a Modern Woman,” with Sienna Miller, and “Drunk Parents,” with Salma Hayek. Baldwin started his career on Broadway playing Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Macbeth” and “South Pacific.” He has won three Emmys and two Golden Globes. Playing Trump on SNL is like chump change for him!

Three essential supplements for winter even after someone contracts the common cold, zinc can help to reduce the duration and severity of symptoms. Probiotics. Eating foods that you don’t typically eat

can cause indigestion, and probiotics are one way to counter this proactively. Supplementing with probiotics helps to make sure your digestive system is able to handle these new

foods. As a bonus, some strains can help to prime your immune system to defend against the cold and flu. The best way to know exactly how much and what strains of pro-

biotics you’re getting is to supplement. Check out your local CHFA Member health food store to find all these supplements and more. When purchasing supple-

ments, always look for the eightdigit Natural Product Number (NPN). This certifies that Health Canada has reviewed and approved the product for safety, efficacy and quality.

(NC) — It can be easy to slip from our healthy routines during the winter months. But in this time of high stress and chilly weather, it’s important to make sure we’re getting the nutrients our body needs to stay in tip-top shape. To do this, consider these three essential supplements to take in the winter recommended by the Canadian Health Food Association. Vitamin D. Known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D plays an important role in our bone, muscle and immune health. Our bodies are able to produce vitamin D, but this is harder in the winter. From October to April, the sun’s rays in Canada are too weak to help us produce adequate levels of vitamin D, which is where supplementation comes in. Health Canada recommends children and adults from nine to 70 years old supplement with 600 IU of vitamin D per day, but this may vary. Check with your health care practitioner to see how much is recommended for you. Zinc. Once the temperature dips, we put up our defences against the cold and flu, and keeping our immune system strong can begin with zinc. This mineral is essential for healthy white blood cell function (these cells protect you from foreign invaders) and is one of the most reliedupon supplements in the winter. Studies show that

edding season is here and so is your chance to advertise! Make sure these brides and grooms-to-be see your wedding products and services advertised alongside the features that matter most to them.

Like many adults, I sometimes have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep. Sleep researchers have determined that as many as two-thirds of Americans don’t get enough sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called insufficient sleep a “public health epidemic.” Contrary to common belief, sleep is not a time when the mind and body shut down. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “sleep is an active period in which a lot of important processing, restoration and strengthening occurs.” Sleep serves critical functions, and it is necessary for optimal health and well-being. Over time, lack of sleep can lead to stress, depression, and mental and phys-

ical exhaustion. We know that when we’re not wellrested, we don’t perform at our best. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Some people may need as few as five hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep. Children need even more. Both children and adults can use naps to get the total number of hours of rest they need. The focus here is on ways that adults can meet their need for rest. Your body has a regular rhythm. Your body and your brain will tell you when you need rest. Use

this information to set a regular time to go to bed and get up. Maintaining this simple routine will help supply your body with the energy it needs each day. Sleep cannot be stored. Bodies need rest on a regular basis. Here are some tips for improving your sleep: • Most people find that the environment of the room is important to sleeping well. Usually people want the room dark, cool and quiet. • Some people use a nap to get the extra sleep they need. Sleep experts suggest limiting an adult nap to less than 45 minutes and taking it before 4 p.m. to ensure that you can still get a full night’s sleep. • Watch what you eat and drink in the evening. Foods and drinks that are high in protein, caffeine or sugar can keep you awake. Liquids can cause you to have to get up to use the bathroom during the night. • Exercise has been found to be beneficial for sleep, especially for

• On Jan. 26, 1788, the first 736 convicts banished from England to Australia land in Botany Bay. With the American victory in the Revolutionary War, transgressors could no lon-

ger be shipped across the Atlantic. Over the next 60 years, some 50,000 criminals were sent to Australia. • On Jan. 25, 1905, at the Premier Mine in South Africa, the largest diamond ever found is discovered. The 3,106carat “Cullinan” weighed 1.33 pounds. Stonecutter Joseph Asscher studied the stone for six months before attempting the cut.

Afterward, he fainted from nervous exhaustion. • On Jan. 24, 1935, canned beer makes its debut as the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company delivers 2,000 cans of its beer. In 1933, after two years of research, American Can had developed a pressurized can that had a special coating to prevent the fizzy beer from chemically reacting

increasing quality of sleep and decreasing certain problems such as sleep apnea. Even small amounts of exercise during the day could help. For most people, some exercise is better for sleep than no exercise at all. • Avoid excitement before bedtime. Instead, try reading, taking a warm bath or shower, or adopting some other routine to help you relax. • When traveling, try to keep your normal eating and sleeping routine. You might find it easier to adjust to a different time zone by adapting your sleeping times before you leave home. These foods may improve the quality of sleep: Walnuts — Good source of tryptophan, a sleepenhancing amino acid that helps make serotonin. Walnuts also contain their own source of melatonin, the “body clock” hormone that sets your sleep and helps you to fall asleep faster. Almonds — Rich in magnesium, which helps you to stay asleep and also builds bones.

Tart Cherry Juice — Naturally boosts levels of melatonin. Dairy — The brain uses the calcium and tryptophan found in dairy foods such as milk, yogurt and cheese to manufacture sleep-triggering melatonin. Crustaceans — Shrimp and lobster are a great source of the sleep-inducing amino-acid tryptophan. Honey — It’s natural sugars raise our insulin slightly, allowing tryptophan to enter our brains more easily. Lettuce — Contains lactucarium, which has sedative properties. This unusual tea recipe is a natural way to help you get a good night’s sleep.

•2-1/2 cups water •3 to 4 large lettuce leaves •1 tablespoon of lemon balm (dried), or two dozen fresh leaves, or 2 herbal lemon balm tea bags •1-2 teaspoons honey

They were the first Americans to die in a spacecraft. • On Jan. 28, 1985, forty-five music stars begin laying down the chorus and solos for “We Are the World,” a record that would raise over $60 mil-

lion for African famine relief. ‘LETTUCE’ SLEEP TEA You can double or triple this recipe, and refrigerate the tea and re-heat a serving each night as desired.

Using a small pot, pour in water and add lettuce leaves, and bring to a boil over high heat, about 15 minutes. Remove pot from the heat. Add fresh or dried lemon balm or the lemon balm tea bags, cover, and let steep for 30 minutes.

Strain the tea and pour into a sealable container. Discard the lettuce leaves and the dried herbs or tea bags. Pour a serving of the tea into a cup, stir in the honey, and drink 1 hour before going to bed. Refrigerate any remaining tea, and reheat and add honey before drinking. Makes 2 servings.

The risk factors for breast cancer Cancer is a formidable foe. Among women, no cancer poses a greater threat than breast cancer, which the World Health Organization reports is the most often diagnosed cancer both in the developed and developing worlds. Gaining a greater understanding of breast cancer may not prevent the onset of this disease that kills hundreds of thousands of women each year, but it might increase the chances of early detection, which can greatly improve women’s chances of surviv-

al. The following are the established risk factors for breast cancer. • Gender: Being female is the single biggest risk factor for developing breast cancer. Men can get breast cancer, but the risk for men is substantially smaller than it is for women. According to Breastcancer.org, roughly 190,000 women are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer each year in the United States alone. • Age: The American Cancer Society notes that about two out of every

three invasive breast cancers are found in women ages 55 and older, whereas just one out of every eight invasive breast cancers are found in women younger than 45. The WHO notes that instances of breast cancer are growing in developing countries, citing longer life expectancies as one of the primary reasons for that increase. • Family history: According to the WHO, a family history of breast cancer increases a woman’s risk factor by two or three. Women who have

had one first-degree female relative, which includes sisters, mothers and daughters, diagnosed with breast cancer are at double the risk for breast cancer than women without such family histories. The risk of developing breast cancer is five times greater for women who have two first-degree relatives who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. • Menstrual history: Women who began menstruating younger than age 12 have a higher risk of developing breast cancer

later in life than women who began menstruating after their twelfth birthdays. The earlier a woman’s breasts form, the sooner they are ready to interact with hormones and chemicals in products that are hormone disruptors. Longer interaction with hormones and hormone disruptors increases a woman’s risk for breast cancer. • Lifestyle choices: A 2005 comparative risk assessment of nine behaviors and environmental factors published in the

U.K. medical journal The Lancet found that 21 percent of all breast cancer deaths across the globe are attributable to alcohol consumption, overweight and obesity and physical inactivity. Women can do nothing to control breast cancer risk factors like gender, age and family history, but making the right lifestyle choices, including limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight and living an active lifestyle, can reduce the likelihood that they will develop breast cancer.

Seven strategic ways to save on food Food is a necessity and an expense that simply cannot be avoided. A 2012 Gallup poll found that Americans reported spending $151 on food per week. Around one in 10 said they spent $300 or more per week, and those with higher incomes tend to spend more on weekly food bills than people who earn less. Compounding high food bills is the fact that people tend to waste food. According to the American Chemistry Council, roughly 80 billion pounds of food are thrown out every year in the United States. Britons throw away around seven million tons of food and drink per year, says BBC Good Food. Saving money on food may seem challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. With some smart strategies, individuals can reduce their food budgets and still have enough to eat. 1. Store food properly. Pay attention to the correct ways to store food, including promptly refrigerating or freezing items to prevent spoiling. 2. Do your own work. Prepackaged, presliced, or preportioned foods take longer for manufacturers to prepare, and those costs are passed on to consumers. Separating foods oneself and putting them into manageable portions may take a little time, but the savings for consumers could be considerable. 3. Buy in bulk when it makes sense. Bulk warehouse stores can make it easier to stock up on essentials. But they also can entice people to buy items they really do not need. Consumers should only purchase items that make fiscal sense or ones that cannot be purchased elsewhere for less. Always compare the price per weight or per unit when shopping. 4. Stock up on staples. Be on the lookout for sales on items used frequently, particularly staples that can be stored away. Watch for low prices on coffee, oils

and canned goods, stocking up when such items go on sale. 5. Embrace dried and canned beans. Beans offer filling fiber and protein for relatively little cost.

They also can be added to meat or vegetable recipes to bulk up dishes. 6. Plan ahead. Planning ahead can save big bucks. Peruse sales before leaving the house and spend

time visiting a few different stores to save more money. Make use of store coupon apps to preload savings that can be used at checkout. 7. Explore frugal reci-

pes. Skipping meat or other expensive items once in awhile can help reduce food bills. Save expensive items for treats, which can make you appreciate them that much more. The same

concept can be used for dining out. It is relatively easy to save money on the cost of food when consumers make a commitment to being more frugal.

Smoothie. It feels good just to say the word, doesn’t it? I used to think of the concoction of naturally sweet, fresh fruit flavors with crushed ice and yogurt as a magical summer thirst quencher, but with so many healthy and sometimes surprising addins nowadays — from kale to beets and chia seeds — I recently dusted off my blender to give some new combos a whirl. While my preference is still a traditional blend of vitamin-rich fruits and berries (even when they come out of a package from the freezer), my family likes a variety of updated twists, too — including adding coconut milk to the goodness for a refreshing, light taste. But first, some smoothie basics using a standard blender. 1. Start with liquids such as juice, milk, kefir, yogurt, sparkling water and crushed ice. 2. Add fresh fruit (a half or whole banana is a standard ingredient for flavor and for thickening the

mixture of any smoothie) and/or vegetables. To cut prep time, your school-age kids can pre-package and freeze fruit-and-veggie combinations in small plastic-bag packets. When it’s time to make a smoothie, toss in the contents of a packet with other ingredients. 3. Whirl it all together. I pulse a few times, then blend for 15 seconds or until smooth. Now for my go-to recipe that is quick to make at breakfast time before sending kids out the door to the bus stop, or as a satisfying afternoon snack to refuel. Older school-age kids can make it themselves with attention to tastes and health needs. Be flexible, too, and experiment with the addition of other ingredients you have on hand, such as a few chunks of pineapple, slices of kiwi or a ripe mango. You really can’t go wrong. FRUIT SMOOTHIE WITH COCONUT MILK •4 ice cubes, crushed •1 cup coconut milk •1/2 banana •1/2 cup plain, unsweetened yogurt •1 cup fresh or frozen berries, such as a combination of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries •Dash of cinnamon

Makes about 2-1/2 cups TIP: If smoothie is too thin, add more fruit or yogurt. Too thick? Just add milk or fruit juice. Donna Erickson’s

(optional) Place ingredients in blender starting with liquids, and process until smooth. Pour into glasses.

American sports put on a good show in 2017, and here are some of the stories to remember: CLEMSON BEATS ALABAMA Trailing 31-28 with 1 second left on the clock, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson hit Hunter Renfrow for the winning touchdown to beat the vaunted Crimson Tide of Alabama. The win avenged the Tigers’ loss from the year prior in what was the NCAA’s first rematch ever in a championship game. MVP Watson was remarkable, passing for 420 yards and three touchdowns, 43 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. TOM BRADY IS THE GREATEST Super Bowl LI may have been the greatest of all-time by more than 30 measures — the number of records set during the game. Down 28-6 to the Atlanta Falcons in

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Just after Halloween, our dog “Skipjack” got into one of my kids’ candy stashes and ate everything, including the wrappers. I kept an eye on him overnight and he seemed fine, just drank water more often. The next day he was normal, other than passing a pretty loose stool with plenty of brightly colored wrappers mixed into it. Is the “never let your dogs eat chocolate” rule overblown? — Tim F., Wichita, Kansas DEAR TIM: I’ve heard anecdotes from several readers about accidental chocolate consumption. Most of them say their pets didn’t have a problem with it. But then, I’m not a veterinarian, and it’s a good bet that vets see quite a few sick pets that got into a chocolate stash, particularly around the holidays. I recently read an article about mass-produced U.S. chocolate having less cocoa content than chocolates made elsewhere. The Food & Drug Administration requires milk chocolate to contain no less than 10 percent

the third quarter, New England Patriot quarterback Tom Brady, the game’s MVP who threw for 466 yards and two touchdowns, engineered a stunning comeback that really shouldn’t have surprised anyone, winning the game in overtime. I used to say that if my life depended on a football game, I would pick Joe Montana as my quarterback ... but no more. Five-time Super Bowl champion Brady takes the all-time greatest quarterback crown, without question. BASEBALL IS BACK, BACK, BACK, BACK In 2017, a peculiar thing happened: The Chicago Cubs went to the White House in order to be congratulated for winning it all a year prior. Then the season emerged as one of the greatest in recent memory. The year belonged to Jose Altuve, Giancarlo Stanton, Clayton Kershaw and Aaron Judge — the greatest rookie of all-time. The playoffs were packed with classic, marquee teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Indians and Dodgers, but in the end, it was the Houston Astros beating both the chocolate liquor. Compare that to the U.K., where milk chocolate must contain at least 25 percent cocoa solids. The size and weight of your pet also must be taken into account. Bigger dogs may process toxic foods more easily than small dogs. So, cheap Halloween candy consumed by a large dog may not have a noticeably negative effect. However, it’s still a gamble. Another issue to consider is Xylitol, a sweetener often used in sugarfree candies. That can be a danger to dogs of any size. In short, keep candy and pets separate — period. Send your pet care tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

THE UNDEFEATED My neighbor had tickets to see the pay-per-view fight between the undefeated Floyd Mayweather and the UFC champion Conor McGregor. “Who should I bet on?” he would ask. I’d reply: “Mayweather is going destroy McGregor.” (Even though I used this column space to say that McGregor would win in an early knockout.) “Yeah? Mayweather?” “Yes, although ... what if McGregor just runs out there and catches him with a left to the chin and knocks him out cold? Could totally happen.” While the fight certainly wasn’t one of the alltime great matches, the spectacle of the event was overshadowed only by Clay vs. Liston, The Rumble in the Jungle or the Thrilla in Manilla. The pre-fight publicity tour was the main event, but the fight turned out to be amazingly fun to watch, with McGregor winning the first three rounds, only to drop after spending too much time in the deep waters where Mayweather took him. It’ll be a long time before boxing sees another spectacle like this one. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Most people don’t realize, though, that the word is derived from the Greek words “sophos,” which means “wise,” and “moros,” which means “stupid.” • It was Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of the U.S. Congress, who made the following sage observation: “Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism: The right to criticize; The right to hold unpopular beliefs; The right to protest; The right of independent thought.” • According to historians, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill slept on silk sheets and wore silk underwear. It seems he had very sensitive skin, and rough fabric made him break out in a rash.

Tips for writing an obituary Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Even those comforted by the acknowledgment that a recently deceased friend or family member lived a full life may still struggle with the sense of loss that comes with the passing of a loved one. Upon the passing of a loved one, an individual is often tasked with writing an obituary. Some people may find writing an obituary is cathartic, providing an opportunity to tell a loved one’s life story and indicate how unique the deceased was. Because writing an obituary is not something people are asked to do every day, it’s understandable if many men and women don’t know where to begin. Obituaries do not necessarily have to follow a formula, but the following tips can help people compose an obituary that conveys who their deceased loved one was and how

Controlling body pain (NC) — They say with age comes wisdom, but for many people it can come with body pain too. This pain can be episodic, kicking in after a physically strenuous activity. Or, it can be long-lasting pain that becomes part of our daily lives, perhaps preventing us from participating in the activities we love. If you experience longlasting pain that interferes with your ability to stay active or accomplish the things you want to, these simple tips can help you take control of your pain: 1. Stay active: Body pain may lead you to avoid physical activity. But low-impact activities like walking, stretching or light exercises can actually help manage pain and even increase strength and flexibility. 2. Get relief: To help gain control over your pain so you can accomplish everything you want to, try a non-prescription pain reliever. For those tired of taking multiple doses of pain relievers, just one Advil 12 Hour keeps working for up to 12 hours. 3. Hot and cold: Direct heat from hot packs or a warm bath can help relax tight muscles, while ice packs can reduce inflammation and ease pain. These tips are suggestions. As always, consult your health care provider with any health concerns.

much this person meant to friends and family. • Contact your local newspaper. Some newspapers may have obituary guidelines that govern things like writing style and obituary length. Before writing an obituary, contact your local newspaper to determine if they have any such rules in place. Some newspapers may only publish obituaries written by their own staff members. • Do not feel obliged to include cause of death. While acquaintances who

first learn of a person’s death via an obituary may be curious about cause of death, loved ones of the deceased do not have to include such information if they are uncomfortable doing so. Many obituaries never include such information, so readers likely won’t expect it. Those who are comfortable including such information in the obituary may find it helps them avoid having to answer numerous inquiries about the loved one’s demise at the ensuing visitation and funeral servi-

ces. • Include some biographical information. Obituaries are typically more than simple announcements of death. Some simple biological information can shed light on who the deceased was and his or her personal and professional accomplishments. Avoid getting too detailed, as newspapers may not accept obituaries that are very lengthy. But biographical information like full name, place of birth, family (i.e., spouse, children, grand-

children, etc.), military service, place of employment, charity work, and hobbies can give readers an accurate idea of the life your loved one lived. • Include donation information. Well-wishers who read the obituary may want to send flowers or make donations to express their condolences. Include the family preference regarding flowers or donations in the obituary. When requesting donations be made to the deceased’s favorite charity, include the charity’s full name and

contact information or a website in the obituary. • Include visitation and funeral information. Be sure to include the day, location and visitation hours for viewings. If the funeral will be public, include the day and time of the funeral as well. • Have the obituary ready one to two days before the services are scheduled. Publishing the obituary a couple of days in advance of visitation hours gives loved ones of the deceased time to arrange to visit and pay their respects.
