DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question concerning estradiol. My gynecologist has me taking 1 milligram of estradiol daily. My internist recommends that I not take it. Which recommendation should I follow? I have never had hot flashes, so that is not a problem. My internist says that I need to gradually stop taking the estradiol. He says that this medicine has more problems than

benefits. It is hard to choose what to do. What do you recommend? — H.L. ANSWER: Back in the 1990s, we often recommended that women take estrogen in order to prevent problems, in addition to treating hot flashes. Two important studies came out showing that estrogen appeared to cause problems as well as prevent them. The definitive answer as to whether estrogen causes more problems than it prevents still isn’t known, and it probably depends on many factors. The term “estrogen” as I am using it refers to a group of related compounds. Estradiol is sometimes referred to as “bioidenti-

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Can you tell me when “The Handmaid’s Tale” will return? It’s one of my favorite dramas. I can’t wait to see what happens next. — Gina T., via email A: You’ll have to wait just a little while longer, but maybe some of these clues as to what to expect in season two will help tide you over. First of all, “Handmaid” returns to Hulu for 13 new episodes, two of which will premiere on April 25 (with subsequent episodes released every Wednesday for streaming). This season will be shaped by Offred’s (played by Emmy Awardwinning lead actress Elizabeth Moss) pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. “Gilead is within you” is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia, and in season two, Offred and all characters will fight against — or succumb to — this dark truth.

cal,” since it is the same hormone that a woman’s body makes, as opposed to conjugated equine estrogen (Premarin), which was most commonly used in the 1990s and earlier. The type of estrogen may make a difference in terms of risk. Also, estrogen is seldom given without a progesterone compound in women who have not had their uterus removed, and the type of progesterone appears to make a major difference in risk. Briefly, the evidence suggests that estrogen reduces the risk of colon cancer and of osteoporosis and fractures. However, it increases the risk of blood clots. The largest areas of confusion are in breast cancer and heart

disease. For conjugated estrogens with medroxyprogesterone, which has the best information, for 1,000 women in 10 years there were seven more heart attacks, eight more strokes, eight more blood clots in the lungs and eight more invasive breast cancers, but six fewer colon cancers and five fewer hip fractures. Recent data suggest that women who start estrogen immediately at menopause have a lower risk of heart disease than those who start five or 10 years after menopause (in fact, they may have an overall lower risk, compared with women who don’t take estrogen). Women who took estrogen alone did not have an increased risk

Elizabeth Moss And while season two goes beyond what was covered in Margaret Atwood’s book, the acclaimed author is helping to shape the new season’s narrative, along with creator/showrunner Bruce Miller. Miller told “Newsweek”: “People talk about how we’re beyond the book, but we’re not really. The book starts, then jumps 200 years with an academic discussion at the end of it, about what’s happened in those intervening 200 years. We’re not going beyond the novel. We’re just covering territory [Atwood] covered quickly, a bit more slowly.”

A: Alan continues his long-standing relationship with HBO, bringing us a new series called “Here and Now,” which premieres Sunday, Feb. 11. Starring Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter, this 10-episode dark-comedy/drama series is the story of a multiracial family whose bonds are tested when one of the children begins seeing things the rest can’t. It also focuses on this family as they wind their way through a Trump-

Q: I am a huge fan of Dominic West. Can you tell me what he’s been up to? — Frieda F., via email A: Dominic has a monumental task ahead of him next: He’ll be playing Jean Valjean in a six-part BBCMasterpiece production of “Les Miserables.” In a statement, Dominic called the role “one of the greatest characters in world literature. ... His epic journey of redemption is one of the extraordinary roles an actor can take on.” Lily Collins and David Oyelowo also star. Production started this month, so we don’t have a release date yet, but I’ll keep you posted. of breast cancer. Because of the known harms of estrogen, at this time neither I nor any expert body recommends taking estrogen just to prevent problems. Until new studies become available, since you have no hot flashes, I agree with your internist. DEAR DR. ROACH: I wanted to tell you of the unbelievable relief I’ve gotten from the small, very painful cracks that used to develop at the ends of my fingers next to the nails, usually in the winter. Since I started taking 1,000 mg of fish oil once a day, I have had only one crack. — R.L.S. ANSWER: I couldn’t

Coldest Night aims to help local homeless By Devin Wilger Staff Writer In the cold of February, many of us look forward to the chance to stay at home for the evening, in the comfort of a well-heated home. Not everyone has that same security, and the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser exists to raise money for Yorkton Transitional Home for Youth (YTHY) while raising awareness for the hidden homeless problem within the city of Yorkton. Glenda Gascho, event organizer, says the goal is to raise money, but also raise awareness, because while there is a homelessness problem in Yorkton it can be a hidden one. There are many people couch surfing, for example, and the cold snap at the end of December emphasized the need to find people places to stay warm. “We know that they’re out there, but for the most part, it’s not something that anybody wants to talk about, because there’s still a stigma or a shame

involved. I think what I want our community to understand is that we do have homeless youth or individuals in our community. We are not any more fortunate than any other community.” YTHY has had over eighty youth go through the homes since it began in 2008, Gascho notes, and the home supports not only Yorkton but the surrounding area. They are supported by the Ministry of Social Services, but note that they use the Coldest Night fundraiser because “as everybody knows, it’s never enough.” Funds are used to increase their food budget, for example, as they are feeding 10 teenagers between their two homes. “It’s a structured home, and that’s why we call it a transitional home. They stay with us until they’re ready to transition out. We also have our outreach program, to target youth between the age of 18 and 30.” Once youth are over 18 they cannot stay in the transitional home, but now

YTHY operates a ten-room rooming house, which costs $500 a month for people who need it, which Gascho admits can be tough for some of the residents. She notes that many of the youth come back, not to stay, but because YTHY is a resource they feel they can rely on as they move on in life, and it’s a very supportive environment. “We have a lot of work to do, and we count on our community to come together and support our youth... We have a lot of hurting youth in our community, and for some of them it goes further than that, they need to have a home.” Before the event itself, 98.5 The Rock and YTHY are getting together for a cold night in the parking lot at Save-On Foods on February 8th. “We’re looking forward to that event. For awareness and letting people know that it’s real, it’s out there, and with their help we’re going to do everything we can to support the youth in our community.” Coldest Night of the

Year will take place on Feb. 24. The event itself will have two routes, one at two kilometers and one at five kilometers. The event starts at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at 73 Smith Street, and walkers will head down 4th Ave. to Broadway, either to Gladstone and back or Kahkewistahaw Gas Station and back, depending on the length of the walk chosen. Registration

starts at 4:00 p.m., the walk begins at 5:00 p.m. and Gascho expects it to be finished by 8:00 p.m. “It’s a fun event, it’s not a long, endurance event.” The goal this year is to get more teams to walk. Individuals can walk as well. Registration is $25 until the week before the event, when it goes up to $40, but anyone 10 and under can walk for free. Walkers from 11 to 17 they

want to see raise $75, at which point they get a toque. Walkers 18 and over they want to raise $150, and will receive the same award. The goal is $20,000, and they’re hoping they can get enough teams to raise that amount. To register, either as a team or an individual walker, go to cnoy.org/location/yorkton or call Gascho at 306-782-2522.

OPEN Cinema returns The Yorkton Film Festival is proud to announce the next installment in its 2017 – 2018 OPEN Cinema screening program and for 2018! YFF will be holding a screening of the film The Age of the Drone. This documentary takes a look at how drones went from a combination of military research and mass produced cell phone technology to a domestic product that anyone can fly. The drones are here to stay, the question is: Who gets to use them, and how? “This is a very interesting film,” said YFF Executive Director Randy Goulden. “Communities across Saskatchewan, and Canada, are dealing with a lot of issues that have come out of the use of drones,

especially for photography. I think this film does a wonderful job in highlighting some of the questions that are being asked by concerned communities, but it also shows the possibilities this technology can bring.” As always, OPEN Cinema is presented 100% free of charge and open to the public. Don’t forget to bring your OPEN Cinema passports, as those who collect 4 out 5 stamps at our screenings will be entered in a chance to win 2 tickets to the 2018 Lobsterfest. OPEN Cinema takes place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13th at the Yorkton Public Library.

DEADLINE CHANGE

Due to Family Day, the deadline for Yorkton This Week Wednesday, February 21, 2018 issue is Friday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m. Note: Our office will be closed on Monday, February 19.

HOLLYWOOD — Twotime Oscar winner Sally Field recently starred in the Netflix film “Little Evil,” with Adam Scott and “Lost’s” Evangeline Lilly, which became available for download Sept. 1. You can learn a lot — and argue a lot, too — watching the Olympic Games. Really, the Olympic Games are the greatest things that the world does in concert. Some would argue the World’s Fair or World Cup, but taken in its entirety they cannot match the pageantry or the sheer spectacle the Games provide. The World’s Fair (next hosted by Dubai in 2020) ceased to be relevant at about the same time the ice-cream cone was invented, and a city chosen as a World Cup venue doesn’t feel the impact either economically or psychologically that an Olympic host city experiences. The only time you see the world come together, all at once, holding the flag of their

supervisors helps you make all necessary changes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A colleague might be a bit too contrary when your ideas are being discussed in the workplace. A demand for an explanation could produce some surprises all around. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Try to avoid distractions at a time when

country and smiling is at the Olympic Games. The only other time the human race comes together en masse holding a flag, it’s a war — and they’re really there to shoot you. And, unlike war, the cities aren’t pillaged. Most cities use the Olympics as a springboard to civic improvements. They attract businesses, they build parks and entertainment districts, and they also get a bevy of sports facilities that they’d otherwise never think of building, such as a bobsled track or a cross-country track with a shooting range attached. That track, by the way, is used for the Biathlon, a competition that strikes many people in America as being a bit weird. Curling, we already knew was weird, but it at least reminds us of shuffleboard. For many, the Biathlon is just too foreign a concept. At least in some parts of the country or, as I learned on a radio show I

hosted, college campuses. “The Biathlon is the most ridiculous sport there is,” charged the liberal, tenured professor, aptly positioned to my left. “Skiing with guns. What’s next? Hand grenades and ice dancing?” Having once dated a mountain girl, I reminded him that skiing and shooting were a perfect combination. I knew of hunters who cross-country skied while hunting grouse, for instance. There used to be a deer-hunting event in the Olympics, too. And there is little doubt that those in the biathlon are athletes. “These are the best hunters in the world. If we lived near the ice cap, these are the guys you want to have with you -- someone who can outlast their prey and take it down with one neatly placed bullet,” I observed, rather astutely. Plus, I argued, target shooting was very sporting, and hunting was a great recreational pursuit. “Well, I’m vegetarian,”

said the young student on the discussion panel. “Why would we need guns if we didn’t kill animals?” Well, duh ... to fight wars. Silly question. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Josh O’Connor, Alec Secareanu in “God’s Own Country” Cranston and Laurence Fishburne head up this heartwarming story of three Vietnam veteran buddies — one Navy corpsman and two Marines — who reconvene in present day for a mission of love and friendship. Larry “Doc” Shepard (Carrell) gets the news that his son, a Marine, has been killed in Iraq. He enlists his friends Sal (Cranston), a rowdy bar owner, and Richard (Fishburne), for-

mer womanizer and troublemaker turned reverend, to help him bury his son. Doc decides against an Arlington funeral, opting instead to bring his son home to New Hampshire. Easier said than done. Along the way, director Richard Linklater paints a portrait of these heroes (of both generations) with equal measures of reminiscing and ribbing. “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” (R) —

PICKS OF THE WEEK “God’s Own Country” (R) — In a remote section of Yorkshire, Johnny (Josh O’Connor) toils at his family farm, tough hardscrabble work with his only escape being cheap assignations after a night of heavy drinking at the local pub. Into this life of desolation comes Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu), a Romanian migrant who will assist in lambing season. The heart wants what the heart wants, even in — or maybe especially in — adverse circumstances. The longing and loneliness and humanness of these two men are palpable and real. It’s an exceptionally well-done love story from a first-time director (Francis Lee) and a breakout role for O’Connor. “Last Flag Flying” (R) — Steve Carrell, Bryan

rescue of Brian’s (also Tyler Perry) daughter Tiffany. They’re joined by Uncle Joe (also Tyler Perry). Tiffany is off to another frat party on Halloween — when will she learn? — and this time, it’s at a closed and presumably haunted summer camp. Listen. I’m a Tyler Perry fan, OK. I recognize the contributions of Madea to both the black community and comedy, but we need to stop this craziness right now. This movie views like somebody’s cashing in on

Yowza. This is no Marvel feature. It’s the biographical tale of psychologist William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), the creator of Wonder Woman, along with his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their live-in mistress Olive (Bella Heathcote). Marston and Elizabeth both are involved in research into dominance theory, and William becomes intrigued by Olive, a student who becomes his teaching assistant. The trio develop a romantic relationship that spans decades. It’s fascinating and quite sexualized. But then, it IS about Wonder Woman, who by Elizabeth’s description: “wears a burlesque outfit and all her friends in Harper’s Bazaar are sorority girls who have spanking parties, and everybody fights Nazis and rides in an invisible plane.” You better believe it. “Boo! Two: A Madea Halloween” (PG-13) — Madea (Tyler Perry) and her sassy gal pals Bam (Cassi Davis) and Hattie (Patrice Lovely) are back once again to come to the

To prepare baking sheets: Let your school-age child draw 12 3-by-3-inch heart shapes with a pencil on 2 sheets of parchment paper cut to fit 2 cookie sheets. Press hard enough as you draw so that you see the hearts on the reverse side. (If you need a pattern for drawing the hearts, cut out a heart from an index card, or simply use a similar-size cookie cutter.) Turn the parchment over and lay on cookie sheets. To prepare dough: An adult should heat the water with the butter and salt to a rolling boil in a saucepan. Stir in the flour over low heat until the mixture is smooth and forms a ball. At first the mixture will look like scrambled eggs. Continue beating until smooth and shiny. To form each heart: Drop large spoonfuls of dough onto the center of each heart shape on the cookie sheets. (I use an ice-cream scoop.) Let your kids spread the dough with their fingers to form each heart shape. After practice, I discovered that the top “V” of the heart should be extra-wide and low to dish with bottoms of rolls. Onto rolls in dish, layer Cheddar, pickle slices, tomatoes and then ham. Replace tops of rolls. Cover dish with foil; bake 20 minutes. Meanwhile, combine dried onions and poppy seeds. Uncover dish. • It was Italian novelist, philosopher and university professor Umberto Eco who made the following sage observation: “Fear prophets and those prepared to die for the truth, for as a rule they

make many others die with them, often before them, at times instead of them.” • The average (presumably non-bearded) man will shave at least 20,000 times over the course of his lifetime.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I found out recently that my son “watches” his dog while at work by monitoring him with a security camera. I don’t think that’s a good way to care for a pet. What’s your take? — Pat in Concord, New Hampshire DEAR PAT: While nothing replaces in-person,

face-to-face interaction between pet and owner, many people are unable to be with their pet during the day. Having a dog walker or pet sitter helps to ensure a pet is cared for during this time, but still doesn’t replace an owner’s voice. So it’s not surprising that more and more owners are using today’s technology to keep an eye on their pets. Video cameras and connected mobile apps allow them to check in on the house. And because some video systems have integrated speakers, those owners can even speak to their

• Although it is a dog, the dhole, which is native to Asia, doesn’t bark; to communicate with other members of its pack, it whistles. Evidently, that high-pitched sound carries better than low-pitched barking in the dense forests where it lives. • Third-century Saint Lawrence of Rome was martyred for his faith by being roasted alive on a gridiron. I suppose it makes a certain kind of sense, then, that he’s the patron saint of cooks and

tanners. • If you’re not in a romantic mood as Valentine’s Day approaches, you might want to consider reviving the vinegar valentine popular in the 19th century. Rather than conveying love and affection, these insulting missives — usually sent anonymously, for obvious reasons — were dripping with sarcasm and black humor. Some were intended to discourage unwanted suitors, but others were just mean, accusing the recipi-

pets through the monitoring app. You can watch videos on the Internet of dogs guiltily slipping off the couch when their owner’s disembodied voice calls “Off!” from an unseen speaker. But such a setup may offer a bit of comfort to a lonely pet, as well. To answer your question, remote monitoring is

just fine to keep an eye on a pet’s health or to see what kind of behavior they exhibit when the owner is not around. But it can’t replace being there. I imagine that your son would much rather be hanging out with his dog than be stuck at the office. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

There were even occupation-specific cards targeted at doctors, salesladies, artists, etc. According to an article in Smithsonian magazine, in the mid-1800s, these vinegar valentines accounted

Valentine’s Day and chocolate are the perfect pair (although I don’t need a special holiday to celebrate the joys of eating chocolate). Women make 75 percent of all chocolate purchases throughout the year, but in the days before and on Valentine’s Day, 75 percent of chocolate purchases are made by men for the women in their lives. They must love us a lot, because more than a billion dollars is spent each year on chocolate for Valentine’s Day. Recent health research supports the benefits of eating dark chocolate in moderation, including helping to lower high blood pressure. Plant phenols — and in the case of dark chocolate, cocoa phenols — are compounds known to lower blood pressure. Chocolates made in Europe are generally richer in cocoa phenols than those made in the U.S.

boiling water. The batter will be thin. Pour the batter into the prepared pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with the Chocolate Lovers Chocolate Frosting recipe below. Makes 10 to 12 servings.

Dark chocolate also contains beneficial antioxidants, which rid the body of free radicals. Free radicals are destructive molecules that are implicated in heart disease and other ailments. The antioxidants in about 1-1/2 ounces of dark chocolate exceed those found in walnuts, grapes and cranberries. This recipe for Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Cake should be made with high-quality, premium dark cocoa powder for the best results. Think of it as a delicious way to improve your health while celebrating love on Valentine’s Day. CHOCOLATE LOVER’S CHOCOLATE CAKE •2 cups sugar •1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour

•3/4 cup premium dark chocolate cocoa powder •1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder •1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda •1 teaspoon salt •2 eggs •1 cup milk •1/2 cup vegetable oil •2 teaspoons vanilla extract •1 cup boiling water •Chocolate frosting (recipe follows) Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour two (9-inch) round baking pans (or see variations below). Using a large bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla. Beat mixture on medium speed for 2 minutes; DO NOT OVERBEAT. Stir in

Boost your winter metabolism (NC) — When temperatures dip, our body adjusts by storing fat to keep warm and switching our brain into hibernation mode. But this can hamper our healthy goals and lower our energy. Fortunately, you can use these three tips to improve your winter metabolism and keep your energy levels going through the cold Canadian weather. Get outside or to the gym. The cold isn’t an excuse to lie in bed all day. Being active through the winter is the easiest way to stay in shape and ensure your metabolism works through the season. If you feel lethargic, it’s because the lower temperatures can cause your body to become slightly insulin resistant. As a result, your muscles don’t respond as well to glucose, which is essentially their fuel. Combat this with reg-

ular endurance or weighttraining exercises to help boost insulin response, burn energy and get your metabolism going. Stay hydrated. It’s easy to remember to stay hydrated in the summer, since we drink more water to cool down. In the winter, however, you may not realize how dehydrated your body is, or why it’s important to drink enough fluids. Studies have found that dehydration can slow down your metabolism, resulting in fewer calories burned per day compared to when you’re sufficiently hydrated. The general rule is eight glasses of water per day, but this varies depending on your own individual health factors. To make sure you’re properly hydrated, check your urine — it should be a clear to light-yellow colour. If it’s dark yellow,

drink up. Supplement. When our metabolism is down, it may be easier to succumb to the winter blues. Fortunately, supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to help prevent seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and when coupled with proper, regular exercise, can help boost the enzymes in our system that break down fat. Vitamin D is another essential nutrient that many Canadians don’t get enough of in the winter, and deficiency has been linked to obesity and even metabolic syndrome. As the sun’s rays aren’t strong enough this season for our bodies to produce sufficient amounts naturally, consider supplementing. When purchasing natural health products, always look for the eight-digit Natural Product Number (NPN). This certifies that Health Canada has reviewed and approved the product for safety, efficacy and quality. Find more healthy winter tips online at chfa.ca.

Using a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt butter in the microwave, about 30 to 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating until the mixture is smooth. Add a small amount of additional milk, if needed, to make the frosting easier to spread. Stir in vanilla extract. Makes about 2 cups frosting.
