Consider Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Cory Jacob, Regional Crops Specialist Watrous, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

Turmel, 2006 Highly dependent upon mycorrhizal

Less dependent upon mycorrhizal

Not dependent

In our prairie soils we have a naturally occurring beneficial fungus that plays an important role in crop production on the prairies. This fungus is known as Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and colonizes the roots of host plants. Host plants include: flax, corn, and pulse crops (please see the table below for a list of host crops). Host crops form a symbiotic relationship with the AMF as the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi help the plants to take up nutrients, whereas the plant provides carbon as a food source to the fungi. Once the AMF colonize the root of a host plant they then work on

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Hope offered Liam some comfort and a place to vent his emotions. Katie and Wyatt both were conflicted about the wedding. Ridge and Brooke remained hopeful that they would serve as an example to Liam that forgiveness was always the answer. Eric and Quinn were surprised but supportive of what was in store for the wedding guests. Steffy called Liam to see if he would escort her to the wedding. Hope and Maya gifted the bride

reduced ability to take up phosphorus and reduced yield may result. If a producer notices a poor flax crop following a canola, this is likely one reason as canola is a non-host of AMF, yet canola on flax stubble should not be an issue from an AMF standpoint as it is a non-host crop. Research in Manitoba has shown that flax grown on canola stubble yields 88% of average. Yet, flax grown on cereal stubble will result average yields (Grant et al., 2009, McGonigle et al., 2011). Cereal crops seem to

not suffer as drastically as flax from the lack of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the soil following canola, mustard or fallow, they seem to be less dependent upon mycorrhizae. The table below outlines host plants that are highly and less dependent on AMF and non-host plants. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi overwinter in the soil as hyphal strands following the harvest of a host crop. Zero tillage allows the hyphal strand network to be left intact, enabling

the AMF to colonize the roots of the next host crop and help it with early season phosphorus uptake. Tillage does break up the hyphal strand network, which means it needs to be re-established, which takes time leads to less early season phosphorus uptake for the host plant. Following a non-host crop or fallow period the hyphal strands are significantly reduced in number and the AMF needs to recolonize the host plant, which again takes time and the sacrifice is the missed uptake of early season phosphorus for the host crop. Considering AMF in your crop rotation and following host crops with host crops is a good strategy. As well, be prepared to see a yield decrease when a host crop follows a nonhost crop.

sending out hyphae or fungal strands into the soil to find nutrients. The main benefit from AMF is the assistance that it provides to the plant in the interception and uptake of immobile nutrients in the soil, mainly early season phosphorus uptake. However, AMF do not colonize brassica plants (canola and mustard) and the fungi population is quite low following these crops or after fallow. Consequently, crops in rotation after canola or mustard may have a

A few safe driving tips from CAA Monday, Feb. 19 is Family Day and for this statutory holiday, many Saskatchewan families will be taking some winter road trips. Here are a few safe driving tips, courtesy of CAA Saskatchewan: Before you drive: • Check weather and road conditions, and be prepared to delay plans if conditions aren’t optimum. Remember to plug

in your vehicle at -15 degrees Celsius. The block heater and cord should be in good working condition. Test your vehicle’s battery. Colder temperatures can weaken the battery and cause it to fail. • Plan your route in advance. Use primary roads and highways which are regularly maintained. Allow extra time for travel and let others know your route and estimated time

of arrival. • Review your mobile messaging or set any navigational systems before getting behind the wheel. • Pack a roadside vehicle kit that contains non-perishable food, water, blankets, extra clothing and footwear, flashlight, candle or matches and tin can, first aid supplies, booster cables, and a shovel. CAA Roadside Assistance Kits

Family Day free fishing weekend Saskatchewan’s annual winter free fishing weekend once again coincides with the province’s Family Day holiday weekend on February 17, 18 and 19. Saskatchewan’s public waters are open one weekend each winter to encourage participation in ice fishing. Both residents and visitors may fish in any waterbody that has an open sport fishing season, without purchasing a fishing license. “Ice fishing is an excellent way to enjoy nature with family and friends during the winter,” Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. “Our lakes attract more than 250,000 anglers each year and the free fishing weekend is the perfect opportunity for both new and experienced anglers.” Anglers are reminded to use caution and common sense, and always put safety

first when going out on frozen lakes. This includes testing the ice thickness before travelling on it. A minimum of 10 cm of good ice is required for walking and 30 cm for light vehicle travel. Wear warm clothing. Anyone planning to take advantage of free fishing weekend is reminded that all other fishing regulations, including possession limits and reduced limits on some lakes and rivers remain in effect. Free fishing weekend does not apply in national parks and anyone planning to take fish out of the province must purchase a license. More information about fishing in Saskatchewan can be found in the Anglers’ Guide, available wherever fishing licenses are sold, or online at www. saskatchewan.ca/fishing.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A year ago, I broke out with pimples on my back, arms and thighs. They itched so badly I thought I would go mad. A dermatologist took a biopsy and told me it was an autoimmune disease called bullous pemphigoid. I was started on prednisone and doxycy-

cline. When it cleared up, I would stop the medication, but it came back. The doctor said she thinks I’ll have to take medication for the rest of my life. I don’t like taking this medication, as it blurs my eyesight and I lose energy. I also have osteoporosis. I do take some vitamins. — G.B. ANSWER: Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease that causes blisters, mostly in older adults. The blisters are large and tense (as opposed to pemphigus, an even more dangerous autoimmune disease, in which the blisters are soft). Bullous pemphigoid tends to come and go

By Cindy Elavsky Q: James Brolin has always been one of my favorite actors, ever since his “Hotel” days. Can you tell me what he has going on now? — Janet F., Fort Meyers, Florida A: Up next for James is the Hallmark movie “Royal Hearts,” which premieres Saturday, Feb. 24. And James is no stranger to Hallmark: His credits include the popular holiday movies “Christmas With Tucker” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” I spoke with James recently about his latest project, and he gave me the scoop. “A line producer on this project called me and said: ‘How would you feel about doing a movie in Romania about a cowboy who inherits a country because he’s the last of a lineage of kings?’ I loved the idea, so I sat down with a writer friend and went over what we could do with it, and began to develop the beats of the story.”

James Brolin A caveat for starring in the film would be that he would also direct, a skill with which Brolin is not unfamiliar: “I entered this business wanting to be a director, and I kept getting pushed in front of the camera. I wasn’t very comfortable or good at it all those years, so I really studied the art behind it, trying to get over my fears and my dislike of saying words into a machine. The whole time, I always had the latest camera. I had my own darkroom when I was 10, and my first movie camera when I was 15. But it wasn’t until I was in the beginning of the second year of ‘Hotel’ where Aaron Spelling said, ‘OK, you can

over months or even years. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy. The usual treatment for bullous pemphigoid is a corticosteroid, either topical or systemic. Since it was over such an extended area of your body, your dermatologist decided on systemic, at a moderate dose of 20 mg. Prednisone has many long-term side effects, including making your osteoporosis much worse. Further, I am concerned that the blurry vision could indicate the onset of diabetes or a cataract, as both are strongly associated with chronic steroid use. Your regular

doctor should be testing you for diabetes and treating the osteoporosis, and should make sure that you see the eye doctor. Certain medications, such as the doxycycline she started you on, can reduce your need for steroids. Other medications used for autoimmune disease can further reduce the need for steroids, but azathioprine, methotrexate, mycophenolate and others have serious side effects of their own. Nicotinamide, also called vitamin B-3, can make the doxycycline more effective. Although bullous pem-

phigoid sometimes does go away, I agree with your doctor that you are likely to need some medication long term; however, she may be able to reduce the dosages. DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult daughter contracted ringworm or some other fungus from her beautiful Border Collie. She has been using over-thecounter meds on the two of them for over 10 months! The dog is doing better than my daughter. Any solutions to get rid of this once and for all? — E.B. ANSWER: Ten months is too long to treat something empirically. It’s time

direct one.’” If you’re in the mood for fun family entertainment, take it from James himself: “I think this is the best Hallmark film ever made. That’s a real self-centered comment, but I do believe that. I invite someone to come up to me with a DVD and say, ‘Hey, this one’s better.’ Because the only time I learn anything is when I’m wrong.” Q: Can you tell me when “American Idol” returns? Who is involved in it this time around? — Davey R.,

via email A: The hit reality show that promises to find the next great singer moves from Fox to ABC for its 16th season, beginning Sunday, March 11, at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest will return as host, with Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan as judges. The format looks like it will be the same as previous seasons, but I must admit — I will always hope for a Simon Cowell cameo. READERS: As you probably already know,

the nominees have been announced for the 90th Academy Awards, which are set to air Sunday, March 4 on ABC. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel will be the host for the second consecutive year. For the full list of Oscar nominees, head over to celebrityextraonline.com and see if your favorites are represented. to find out what this fungus might be, and that means a visit to a dermatologist, who can do a culture of the infection to find out what it is. There are some unusual fungi that can be passed from animals (dogs, cats, pigs, horses, cattle) to humans and cause skin infection. Rarely is systemic treatment necessary. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Stop being the wool-gathering Lamb, and start turning that dream project into reality. You have the ideas, the drive and the charisma to persuade others to follow your lead. So do it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’ve scored some big successes. But remember that all hardworking Ferdinands and Ferdinandas need some time to restore their energies and refresh their spirits. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re gaining a stronger mental image of what you’re trying to achieve. Now look for the facts that will help get this to develop from a concept into a solid proposal. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some of you eagerto-please Moon Children might want to delay some decisions until midweek, when you can again think more with your head than your heart. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new business venture seems to offer everything you’ve been looking for. But be careful that that rosy picture doesn’t betray traces of red ink under the surface. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A volatile situation needs the kind

of thoughtful and considerate care you can provide right now. There’ll be plenty of time later to ana-

Those who criticize you don’t understand what friendship is all about. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your strong work ethic is rewarded with the kind of challeng-

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Bad Mom’s Christmas” (R) — Is it possible for a mother to sit back and actually enjoy Christmas? Amy (Mila Kunis), Kiki (Kristen Bell) and Carla (Kathryn Hahn) — the original Bad Moms — are back in hotmess action mode, this time facing the mother of all holidays and its attendant family pressures. I invite you to watch the “unrated” online trailer. It’s a fair representation of the raunch level, which is pretty dang high. The inclusion of three veteran comedians in Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines and Susan Sarandon as the grandmoms doesn’t really kick up the comedy so much as it spreads it out. It’s definitely watchable and funny, but if the first one was shocking but refreshingly honest humor, this was is an over-the-top hammering of vulgarity — plus you’ll see what’s coming, including the obvious potential setup at the end. “Only the Brave” (PG-13) — A spectacular ensemble cast — Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly, Andie McDowell, Ben Hardy — takes on heroism and sacrifice, with heartwarming results as mesmerizing as a flame. The story focuses on Superintendent Eric “Supe” Marsh (Brolin) and his singular devotion to his elite crew of firefighters

WANTED

Julianne Moore in “Suburbicon” and their training, as well as new recruit Brendan “Donut” McDonough (Teller, who is having a banner year) and ultimately, the story of their battle in the Yarnell Hill wildfire in June 2013. It is based on the GQ article “No Exit,” which chronicled these famed “hotshots.” “Suburbicon” (R) — Suburbicon is a bastion of homogeneity, an idyllic, lily-white paradise. One black family and a home invasion later, and resident Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) is becoming increasingly unhinged. His wife is murdered, her sister (the crazy, Stepford Julianne Moore, not the crying Julianne Moore) moves in to play mother to his son, and there are gangsters and crooked insurance investigators and race riots, etc. — a typical Coen Brothers script. It’s directed by George Clooney, who imparts a particular style of snappy dialogue and that certain retro look, which, if you’re into it, maybe you could take a chance. If not, pass. “Battlecreek” — Henry (Bill Skarsgard) is a sensitive artist and chronic loner who, due to a rare skin condition, cannot expose his skin to sunlight. He lives with his mother, Tallulah (Paula

Malcomson), who jealously guards him like a prize, and he works at night a garage for the local mechanic (Delroy Lindo). When Alison (Claire van der Boom) is stranded in town with a broken-down car and a troubled past, Henry and Alison are forced to confront not only their growing feelings for one another, but the secrets and sins of the past. Directed by Alison Eastwood, “Battlecreek” is almost by necessity dark, but never hopeless. Skarsgard is luminous, and this film is a hidden gem that needs to see much more of the light.

Get on the fast track to being organized

Motoring through your morning routine

Getting organized is often on the minds of people throughout the year. According to the data pulled from Google by iQuanti, 33,230,420 searches were made about “getting organized” in 2017. People are still interested in finding out ways to streamline their lives and conquer the clutter. Even though getting organized may seem like an ardu-

(NC) — A productive morning can help increase your motivation and productivity throughout the day. However, new research from Centrum shows that a third of Canadians (33 per cent) don’t think their early routine impacts the rest of their day. “We tend to over-estimate how much we can get done in a set period of time — morning routines help mitigate the negative effects of this common cognitive error,” explains Dr. Brynn

ous task, there are ways to get organized and do so quickly. • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep

a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or illfitting clothing from the

closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find

space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digi-

tal correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

If you’d like to add exercise

or meditation, leisure or family time to your morning routine, having a plan is key. With the fall upon us and shorter winter days ahead, there’s no better occasion to start. Here are a few ideas: Get quality sleep. Going to bed at the same time every night is the first step to waking up rested. Once you’ve started waking up earlier, keep the momentum going by setting new morning goals for yourself.

However, new research from Centrum shows that a third of Canadians (33 per cent) don’t think their early routine impacts the rest of their day. “We tend to over-estimate how much we can get done in a set period of time — morning routines help mitigate the negative effects of this common cognitive error,” explains Dr. Brynn

HOLLYWOOD — As the 90th Oscar Awards approach on March 4, many films need to win Oscars to help their grosses. The clear box-office leaders, from the end of the year were “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” with a cost of some $100 million and a $822 million gross ($567 million more than the original “Jumanji,” with Robin Williams); “Dunkirk,” $100 million cost and $526 million gross; and “The Greatest Showman,” $84 million

A few weeks ago at Torrey Pines, Tiger Woods may have accomplished his greatest feat as a golfer: missing a birdie putt. Woods probably would have made the shot if some [expletive deleted] hadn’t taken the moment of his backswing to yell out, “GET IN THE HOLE!” The backlash among those in attendance toward the offender was swift. They were able to track the guy down and shame him on social media, and one hopes, got him kicked out and banned from the venue for life. Now if this had happened to a lesser golfer — say, someone at the back end of the draw or someone like John Daly (who people probably just assume likes that sort that of thing) — we’d still have to put up with hearing that at golf tournaments. But one hopes that Torrey Pines became that stupid, obnoxious, brainless, unsportsmanlike shout’s Waterloo. Let it end there. Like the fall of the Berlin Wall, and more recently the #MeToo movement, significant social

cost and $260 million gross. Seven-time nominee “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” cost $12 million and has grossed

$72 million, while “Lady Bird,” which cost $10 million, has grossed $42 million. “Call Me by Your Name” cost $3.5 million and has earned $17 million, and “The Disaster Artist, with James Franco (who won a best-actor Golden Globe but didn’t get an Oscar nod), has recouped its $10 million cost with $28 million in grosses. Gary Oldman’s bravura performance as Winston Churchill in “The Darkest Hour” cost $30 million and is over $100 million in grosses. Some of these films will benefit from Oscar wins, especially if best-actor nomi-

change has a way of creeping up on us until all of a sudden, it reaches a crescendo that is too strong to be stopped. In sports, we remember the day that Jackie Robinson first took to the field in Brooklyn as such a moment. Shortly after, the color barrier broke all across the country. Years later, kids reading a sports almanac could only furrow their brows and ask if such a day really existed ... a time when a black guy couldn’t play big-league sports. And we remember the day Billie Jean King said she wasn’t going to play without equal pay — that she wasn’t going to be penalized for being a woman. Sports mirrors society, but often it is a step ahead when it comes to morals and judgment. Every time sports is faced with some ridiculous set of discriminatory rules or off-base judgments, a core group of leaders pay attention to what sports is supposed to be — competition among your peers utilizing a universal and equal set of rules — and make changes. It doesn’t always happen as quickly as we’d like or deserve, but in general, it happens. Last month it happened in Cleveland. Since 1932, the Cleveland Indians have employed a stereotype as

their “logo” (even though it also was clearly marketed or implied to be serving as a “mascot” for decades). Never mind that “Indians” in North America were never “Indians” to begin with, the fact that too many sports fans couldn’t see the ridiculous use of “Chief Wahoo” as a logo for a team that had just moved into “Progressive Field” is a real scalp scratcher. And now we turn the tide toward Washington, D.C.’s professional football franchise and its abysmally tone-deaf and dictionary-defined racist slur “Redskin” moniker. Dan Snyder, owner of the Redskins, has vowed NEVER to change the team’s name. But Snyder is on the wrong side of history, and like his team of late, he will lose. The Washington football team will change its name with or without him — preferably without. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not only on the wrong side of history, but needs to seriously consider crawling back into the hole they came from. Time’s up, Snyder ... let’s see how long it takes for you to get the message everyone else seems to have gotten but you. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Kelsey Grammer

Did you know? Lead is a naturally occurring element found in the earth’s crust that can be toxic to both humans and animals. Lead can be found in air, soil and water, and human exposure to lead can often be traced to human activities, such as the one-time use of leaded gasolines and previous use of lead-based paints in homes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that lead also may have been used in ceramics, pipes, plumbing materials, and even some cosmetics. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of lead is its potential effect on children. The still-developing brains and nervous systems of chil-

dren are more sensitive to the harmful effects of lead because their bodies absorb more of it than the bodies of adults. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the use of lead in house paint, on products marketed to children, including toys, and in dishes or cookware was banned in the United States in 1978. However, lead may still be found on

toys imported from countries that have not yet banned lead. In addition, toys and collectibles that were produced prior to the ban in the United States may still contain lead that can be harmful to children and adults. Parents who suspect their children have been exposed to lead can speak with their youngsters’ pediatricians, who may order blood tests to check for lead exposure.

nearly balanced $11 million-plus cost with its $20 million gross. “The Post” cost $50 million (mostly because of the salaries of Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg) and has grossed $83 million. Streep’s best actress nomination is helping, but don’t expect her to win. Finally, “The Phantom Thread,” despite being three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis’ last film, has recouped only $10 million of its $35 million cost. Winning Oscars can change all of the above ... stay tuned. Kelsey Grammer starred as Dr. Frasier Crane in “Cheers” (1984-

nee Gary Oldman, bestactress nominee Frances McDormand and best supporting actor nominee Sam Rockwell (both for “Three Billboards”) win. “The Shape of Water” won a Golden Globe for its director, Guillermo Del Toro, and has grossed $52 million, recouping its $20 million cost. But “All the Money in the World,” despite replacing Kevin Spacey’s scenes with Christopher Plummer (who received a supporting actor nomination), is struggling to recoup its $50 million cost. “Molly’s Game” has grossed $43 million off its $30 million cost, and “I Tonia” has

1993) and “Frasier” (1993-2004), and wowed Broadway audiences as Captain Hook in the musical “Finding Neverland” (2015-2016). He’s lent his voice to the animated feature “Bunyan and Babe,” with John Goodman as the famous axman Paul Bunyan, along with Jeff Foxworthy and Mark Hamill, which opened Feb. 3. Grammer also stars in the Chinese/Australian co-production of the sci-fi horror thriller “Guardians of the Tomb,” with former “Hercules” Kellan Lutz, opening Feb. 23. Hopefully the film will get more “Cheers” than jeers at the box office.

A homemade chocolate treat crystallized ginger •1⁄2 cup heavy (whipping) cream •1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

A homemade chocolate treat goes a long way. Try the following recipe for “Chilled Chocolate Soufflé with Lots of Ginger” courtesy of Lori Longbotham’s “Luscious Creamy Desserts” (Chronicle Books). Chilled Chocolate Soufflé with Lots of Ginger Serves 4 to 6 •1⁄2 cup water •1-1⁄4-ounce envelope plain gelatin •1 pound bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped •1⁄2 cup (1 stick) unsalt-

ed butter, cut into small pieces •1⁄4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder •2 tablespoons brandy •6 large eggs, separated •3⁄4 cup sugar •Pinch of salt •3 large egg whites •1⁄2 cup finely chopped

Wrap a long, folded strip of heavy-duty aluminum foil or parchment paper around a 5-cup soufflé dish to form a collar that extends about 3 inches above the rim of the dish, and secure it with tape or string. Lightly oil the dish and the inside of the foil. Refrigerate the dish until ready to use. Pour 1⁄4 cup of the water into a small bowl and sprinkle with the gelatin. Let stand for 10 minutes, or until softened. Place the bowl with the gelatin in a larger bowl of hot water and stir until the gelatin has dissolved and the liquid is clear.

Melt the chocolate and butter with the cocoa in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of about 1-1⁄2 inches of barely simmering water, whisking occasionally until smooth. Remove the bowl from the saucepan and whisk in the remaining 1⁄4 cup water and the brandy. With a handheld electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the egg yolks, 1⁄2 cup of the sugar, and the salt in a large, deep heatproof bowl until well combined. Set the bowl over the saucepan of barely simmering water and beat for 15 minutes, or until the mixture is very thick and pale. Beat in the chocolate mixture just until combined. Remove the bowl from the heat, add the gelatin mixture, and beat until the mixture

cools to room temperature. With clean beaters, on medium speed, beat the egg whites in a large, deep clean bowl until the whites form soft peaks when the beaters are lifted. Increase the heat to medium-high and sprinkle in the remaining 1⁄4 cup sugar about 1 tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition, then beat until the whites form stiff peaks. Beat in the ginger. With clean beaters, beat the heavy cream and vanilla on high speed in a medium bowl just until the

cream forms stiff peaks. Place the bowl of egg yolk mixture in a larger bowl of ice water and whisk just until it begins to thicken and set. With a whisk, gently fold in the whipped cream, and then the egg whites. Pour into the soufflé dish and smooth the top with a rubber spatula. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, until thoroughly chilled and set, for up to 24 hours. To serve, remove the collar from the soufflé. Present the soufflé at the table, and spoon onto the dessert plates.

Waialeale. If you do, though, be sure to take an umbrella, as that mountain holds the distinction of receiving more rainfall than any other place on Earth, with an average of about 40 feet — yes, feet — of rain annually. • According to the National Chicken Council’s annual Chicken Wing Report — yes, there is such a report, and it is strategically timed for release just before the Super Bowl — 1.35 billion

wings were consumed during Super Bowl weekend this year. That’s an all-time high; the number crunchers have determined that if all those wings were laid end-to-end, the resulting line of poultry would stretch 394 million feet. That would be long enough to circle the Earth three times — or to cross a road 13 million times. • When archaeologists discovered the tomb of King Tut, one of the objects they found inside was a

bronze razor — and it was still sharp enough to use. • Did you ever wonder how the lollipop got its name? A man named George Smith first put the hard treat on the end of a stick, but candy-making wasn’t his only interest. It seems that Smith also had a keen interest in horseracing, and he named the candy after a popular racehorse of the time, Lolly Pop. • Those who study such things say that all mam-

Heat oven to 450 F. Place pie crust in deepdish 10-inch pie plate and flute edges. Stir 1/2 teaspoon almond extract into cherry pie filling. Evenly spoon mixture into prepared pie crust. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove pie from oven and lower heat to 350 F. In a large bowl, stir cream cheese with a sturdy spoon until soft. Stir in eggs and remaining 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Add Splenda. Mix well to combine. Carefully spoon cream cheese mixture evenly

over cherry pie filling. Continue baking for 30 minutes. Place pie plate on a wire rack and allow to cool at least 1 hour. Evenly spread sour cream over top of cooled pie. Lightly sprinkle almonds and nutmeg over top. Refrigerate for at least

Whip up a delicious devilish indulgence Homemade desserts can be a great way for men and women to show their significant others how much they’re loved. While the following indulgent recipe for “Devil’s Food Layer Cake” from Elisabeth M. Prueitt and Chad Robertson’s “Tartine” (Chronicle Books) takes a little effort, the results are well worth the work.

•1-1⁄4 cups full-fat buttermilk CHOCOLATE GANACHE •24 ounces or 32 ounces bittersweet chocolate •3 cups or 4 cups heavy cream •1⁄2 cup plus 1 tablespoon caramel

Cake layers •1-3⁄4 cups all-purpose flour •4-1⁄2 tablespoons cornstarch •1 teaspoon baking powder •1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda •1-1⁄4 cups cocoa powder •1 teaspoon salt •1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature •2-3⁄4 cups sugar •5 large eggs

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter and lightly flour the sides of two 9-inch cake pans, knocking out the excess flour. Line the bottom of each pan with parchment paper cut to fit exactly. To make the cake layers, sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt into a bowl and set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium-high speed until light and creamy. Slowly add the sugar and continue to beat on the same speed light in color and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until incor-

porated before adding the next egg. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with the rubber spatula. With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture in 3 equal batches alternately with the buttermilk in 2 batches, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stop the mixer, scrape down the sides of the bowl and then mix again for another few seconds. Divide the cake batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake until the top springs back when lightly touched or a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes. Let the cakes cool completely in the pans on a wire rack. The best thing to do is to be supportive of Rascal. Recognize that you’re both missing Fresca, and give Rascal plenty of attention and cuddles. However, don’t change his routine. Mealtimes should stay the same, playing and socialization

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 3-year-old cat, “Rascal,” is having a terrible time adjusting since my other cat, “Fresca,” died just a

few weeks ago. He roams the house at night, meowing for hours, and doesn’t always eat his food. What can I do to help him? — John C., El Paso, Texas DEAR JOHN: I’m sorry to hear about the loss of Fresca. It can be surprising to learn that many animals go through a grieving process after losing a companion — whether human or animal. And, just as with humans, grieving can take time.

• What’s on sale in February? Get great deals on electronics — including computers — and mattresses, carpet/tile/laminates and other flooring, used cars, catalog closeouts and exercise equipment. Also, look for gift add-ons with perfume purchases and after-holiday deals on candy and red items (think ahead for Fourth of July and Christmas tableware!) • “We recently got a cute pot rack, but when we put up our stainless steel pots, it became clear that we weren’t doing a great job of cleaning them — eew! My neighbor and best friend came to the rescue with a product called Barkeepers Friend. It’s a scouring powder, but it doesn’t scratch. Anyway, all the yellow stains on the bottom of our pots came off. And it de-grossed a cast-iron skillet too (we re-

seasoned it). Our pot rack now looks great.” — M.D. in Louisiana • Fine particles of dust and grease mix in the air in the kitchen, and when they settle on things, it can get sticky! If you have a buildup of this sticky dust on appliances, try this trick: Make a paste from baking soda or cream of tartar and water. Apply with a damp sponge for a little gentle abrasive. Follow with a clean damp cloth. This works especially well on the top of the fridge. • If you dye your own hair, apply a border of petroleum jelly to the outside of your face at the hair line. This will keep those drips from staining your face. Apply some to your ears as well, and the back of your neck for the same reason. • Don’t forget to wash your kid’s backpack from time to time. The places it goes and the things it sees make me shudder, especially in this cold and flu season. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

DEVIL’S FOOD LAYER CAKE Yields 1 10-inch cake; 12 to 16 servings

Remove the cake from the refrigerator. Using the rest of the ganache, frost the top and sides of the cake with the offset spatula. If you are going to coat the cake with the toasted cake crumbs, the cake must be evenly frosted and the ganache must be soft enough for the crumbs to adhere. If the ganache has hardened, use a kitchen torch to soften it slightly, or put the whole cake into a 400 F oven for 10 seconds or so, just until the chocolate looks shiny.

To make the ganache, place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl, using the smaller amount of each ingredient if you will be

decorating the cake with crumbs and the larger amount if you will not. Bring the cream to just under a boil in a small saucepan. Pour the cream over the chocolate. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes without stirring until the chocolate is partially melted, and then stir with a rubber spatula until smooth and shiny. To assemble the cake, split each cake into 2 layers to make 4 layers in all. Transfer 1 layer to a serving plate. Using an offset spatula, spread 3 tablespoons of the caramel evenly over the cake layer. Spread a thin layer of ganache (about 1⁄4-inch thick) over the caramel. Top with a second cake layer, and again spread with 3 tablespoons caramel and then a thin layer of ganache. Top with the fourth cake layer. Refrigerate the cake until the center seems firm, 1 to 2 hours. Cover the remaining ganache with plastic wrap and leave at room temperature for finishing the cake.

times should stay the same (though you can extend the length of that play time). If Rascal starts eating less or stops eating altogether, try encouraging him to eat by adding a little bit of warm (not hot) broth to his food. Stay in the room while he eats --

many cats don’t like being petted while they eat, but they often don’t mind owners sitting nearby. It may take as long as six months for Rascal to recover from the loss of his friend. Be as supportive as possible without changing his routine, or feed-

ing him too many treats. If he stops eating for more than three days, still won’t sleep or doesn’t seem to be improving after a couple of months, contact the veterinarian. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

When the cakes are cool, turn them out by inverting the pans, and then turn the cakes upright. Using a serrated knife, slice off the domed portion from the top of each cake to make the tops flat. If you want to decorate the cake with crumbs as described in the headnote, reserve the slices for making the crumbs. To make the crumbs, preheat the oven to 250 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a nonstick liner. Break up the cake slices and spread on the lined baking sheet. Place in the oven and toast until completely dry, about 1 hour. Let cool completely, then transfer to a food processor or blender and process until finely ground. Sift the crumbs through a medium-mesh sieve. (Don’t use a sieve with fine mesh or the crumbs won’t pass through.) Set aside.

Sprinkle the crumbs evenly over the top of the cake, then tilt and turn the cake so that they spill over the sides, adhering to them as they fall. If you are using only the ganache and not the crumbs, the ganache will be thicker on both the top and sides.

Serve the cake at room temperature. To store, cover tightly and keep in a cool place for up to 4 days. It is not necessary to keep this cake in the refrigerator.
