I know I can’t repair the damage that has been done, but is there anything I can do to keep this disease from getting worse? — T.C. ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in North America is due mostly to cigarette smoking, but cooking fires, asthma and other rare conditions also may predispose people to COPD. Lung function decreases with aging in all adults, but in people with COPD

(a combination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis), the worsening of lung function over time is critical because of the loss of pulmonary reserve. You already have done by far the most important thing you can do to prevent further damage: quit smoking. Avoiding other air pollutants (especially secondhand smoke) also may help. Regular physical activity seems to slow progression of COPD. Treatment with inhaled steroids reduces airway inflammation and somewhat slows progression of

I find it hard to believe that the body will absorb every single one of the 2,000 calories ingested. Please advise. — J.H. ANSWER: Our bodies are very well adapted to extract energy out of the food we eat, but you are right that there is some energy left in food at the time it is excreted. Some chemical energy also is used by the bacteria in the gut. A little bit is lost in the urine. But in general, we absorb probably 90 percent of the chemical

energy stored in food. A few factors can affect that number. Food that is cooked or processed tends to have calories that are more easily accessible and more absorbable. This may be one reason that those who eat only raw foods tend to lose weight (another may be that they avoid highly calorie-dense foods). There also are medical conditions that prevent us from absorbing food properly (lactose intolerance and celiac disease are two of the more common of the many causes of malabsorption). In summary, calorie counts are imprecise, but still useful for comparing one food with another. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. The heritage of history Family Day for some in the city meant taking in the displays at the Yorkton
branch of the Western Development Museum.
Local film on oat production released By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Story of Oats, a 360° virtual reality video created over the summer and fall of 2017, was officially released Feb. 13, to celebrate Canada’s Agriculture Day. The Story of Oats follows the lifecycle of oat seeds from the field to the kitchen table. The big step for the Yorkton Exhibition Association, which was instrumental in getting the project off the ground, was determining what aspect of agriculture to address in the film, but with a local processor, the decision was soon made to promote oats.
“We wanted something local to Yorkton and area,” said JeanAnne Teliske, general manager of the YEA, last September, regarding the film project. That choice opened the doors to a couple of additional funding partners, as both Grain Millers and the Prairie Oat Growers Association came on board, said Teliske. Terry Tyson, general manager of Grain Millers in Yorkton, said they immediately saw value in the project. “As more and more of society gets a little farther removed from the farm gate each year, Grain Millers supports efforts of groups such as Farm and Food Care SK and Agriculture
in the Classroom that seek to preserve and strengthen that connection between agriculture and society,” he told Yorkton This Week. “We feel that consumers need a better understanding of where their food comes from, and how it makes its way to them. So when the Yorkton Exhibition Association and SK Ag approached us about assisting with telling the Story of Oats, we couldn’t have been happier to help. We hear the term “social license” a lot in this context, as in farmers struggling to maintain their social license to farm. We believe that consumer mistrust and suspicion are rooted in unfamiliarity, and that only by focusing
Board game unveiled Grade Eight students around Saskatchewan are being provided with a fun, educational way to remember Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation with the launch of the It’s Democracy! board game. The Canada 150 legacy project was undertaken by the Provincial Capital Commission, with financial support from the Government of Canada through the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. “The game can be used as a tool to help teach
students about our democratic system of government, provincial history and leaders, and about our connection to the Crown,” Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Ken Cheveldayoff said. “We’re confident that the knowledge the students will gain from this valuable resource will leave a lasting impression. The It’s Democracy! game is a fitting conclusion to a wonderful year of Canada 150
celebrations.” Produced in both official languages, the game is being supplied to approximately 700 public, separate and Band operated schools around the province. It was developed and designed in consultation with the Ministry of Education, a focus group of educators and other partners, with the Grade Eight social studies curriculum in mind.
on transparency and education, and connecting the dots between real people, will we bridge that gap.” The video was filmed near Foam Lake, Saskatchewan and produced by Farm Boy Productions out of Ontario. The on-farm filming took place on the Chris Rundel farm. A member of the Prairie Oat Growers Association said the film is a way to connect with consumers. “It’s another way as farmers … we can take the story of oats to an increasingly urbanized population,” he said, adding the film shows one aspect of “where food come from.” Rundel said the film crew spent a day on the farm taking video via drone cameras, and others mounted on equipment such as the combine. The resulting film is one he thinks does a good job in telling the story of oats. “I think it did a good job of showing a little bit of what it means to be an oat grower,” he said, adding that while it shows the onfarm equipment required, it goes the next step as well, “following things to the processor.” According to Teliske, “educating the public as to where their food comes from is important and I think we were able to do

this in an engaging and fun way.” The unique 360° video was utilized as a way to immerse people in the viewing experience, allowing them to look up, down and all around as if they are experiencing the situation in real life. The videos are best viewed using a Virtual Reality (VR) headset but can also be viewed on computers or smart phones. The Story of Oats puts you in the seat of a combine, inside a grain bin, and gives you VIP access to the oat processing plant. The funding partnership will purchase 20 headsets. Teliske said the headsets will be used for trade show promotions, and for students through Agriculture in the Classroom. She added they held discussions with the school group to make sure the finished film hit upon the right things to fit curriculum. Naomie Paley with Saskatchewan Agriculture, who was instrumental in the initial project idea, said it is the educational opportunity of the film, for both students and consum-
ers which makes the project so appealing to those involved. “It will be pretty cool … to take it into the classroom and let them experience it,” she said. Three additional traditional videos were also produced which take you through the details of how oats are grown, harvested, and processed. The videos cover numerous aspects of school curriculum identified by Agriculture in the Classroom and will be made available to local schools. The project was made possible through Agriculture Awareness Initiative Program, which is part of the federal-provincial Growing Forward 2 Agriculture policy framework, along with funding from Grain Millers Canada and SaskOats. A partnership was also created with Farm & Food Care Ontario to include The Story of Oats in their suite of online virtual farm tours at FarmFood360.ca. Q: My girlfriend and I recently binge-watched “American Vandal” on Netflix. Will there be more episodes? — Victor F., via email A: The half-hour mockumentary, which spoofs shows such as “Making a Murderer” and “Serial,” has been renewed for an eight-episode second season by the streaming giant. Scheduled to air sometime this year (no date as yet), season two again will feature high-school student and burgeoning documen-
tarian Peter Maldonado (Tyler Alvarez) as he tries to solve a mystery at a different school with a new set of students. As you’ll recall, season one centered on the mystery of who spray-painted penises on 23 teachers’ cars at Peter’s school,
with Peter’s aim to vindicate accused vandal Dylan Maxwell. While the storyline might seem juvenile on the surface, the execution of the story is anything but. The series is a brilliantly amusing (and heartbreaking) look at high-school life, social pressures and societal pigeonholing — all set on the backdrop of a fascinating mystery. Q: With the recent reboots of “Will and Grace,” “Full House” and “Roseanne,” etc., are there any new/old shows to add to the redux list? — Michael T. in Florida A: It seems that everything old is new again. The latest ‘80s/’90s sitcom to get the green light for another go-round is the astoundingly ahead-of-its-time
One of the best parts of not being a Philadelphia sports fan is that you get to watch Philadelphia sports fans from a neutral vantage point ... something many Philly sports fans are trained at spotting and keying in on. Take Frank, for instance. I work with Frank. The Eagles had beaten Minnesota badly a few days before. When Frank saw me, he stood in front of me and said, “Sooo ... what do you think?” I had no earthly idea what he was talking about. His manner of dress? Did he get a new haircut or handbag? What? “The Iggles!” he said with a special type of smile. It was the smile of hope and pride and trepidation all mixed together in one facial expression at once. For a half-century, Frank had rooted for the Eagles. Week after week, he dissected the previ-
ous game and upcoming contest in ways the most practiced and studied football analyst from the NFL Network or ESPN could never do. Now they were on the cusp. “I think that the Eagles better not keep it close in the fourth quarter,” I started to say. Then I caught the look in his eyes. It was the kind of look a kid gives you when he finds a stray puppy and asks if he can keep it, pleeeeease. Seeing this, I quickly added that I thought the Eagles had the superior defensive line and better running game, two necessary ingredients in order to beat a passperfect offense featuring the likes of Tom Brady and the Patriots. One of the guys that works with Frank exclaimed to me that, get this, Frank was going down to Florida with another Eagles fan so he could watch the game on the beach. Not that there was anything wrong with that, it just seemed a little odd. Some Philadelphians behave like a bunch of crabs in a pot -- whenever one of them tries to leave,
they get clawed back into the boil. Frank again smiled with wide eyes. “Do you think they’ll have the parade on Tuesday, so I can get back in time to be there?” Yes, I surmised that the Eagles would need to wait at least one day and let the city call up a battalion or regiment of anti-riot police. “Aha! So you think we’re gonna win!” A pause then a meek, “Right?” There was plenty the Eagles did right during Super Bowl LII, but there was plenty to nitpick too. For example: Chris Collinsworth announced the game as if he was in a locked room with a bunch of Patriot terrorists that had guns trained on him. Did Dodge really think Martin Luther King’s anti-consumerism speech was a great vehicle to sell vehicles? (Apparently so.) And did anyone ever stop to ask Bill Belichick why he felt it necessary to wear that ridiculous cut-sleeved sweatshirt, that he was a Super Bowl coach and not an itinerate hobo who just

newsroom sitcom “Murphy Brown.” CBS has given the order for a 13-episode season, which will star Candice Bergen and have creator Diane English on board. According to deadline.com: “Talks are underway with original cast members to return.” Now all we need is a new iteration of “Family Ties” (imagine what intelligent writers could do to skewer the current administration) and “Designing Women,” and I’m all set! Q: Do you have any news about “House of Cards”? I was so worried it would be canceled after the sexual-misconduct news surrounding Kevin Spacey was revealed. — Wanda B., via email A: As I’ve reported, “House of Cards” will be got fired off the line of a bad roadside diner? Does any of it matter anymore to the city of broken lamp posts and Crisco? No, it does not. For Philadelphia the Eagles — in particular — proved everyone wrong by doing what was right on game day. They never gave up, and now we’ll never stop hearing about Nick Foles. Right, Frank? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.
back for its sixth and final season, with Kevin Spacey having nothing whatsoever to do with the production. This last season will focus on Robin Wright’s character, President Claire Underwood, and will have eight episodes instead of its usual 13. This season also will see some new faces: Academy Awardnominated actors Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear have been tapped to play siblings, but that’s all we know about their characters as of this writing. And some more news that absolutely thrills me is that “Unreal” star Constance Zimmer is
returning to her pivotal role of investigative reporter Janine Skorsky. Word has it she will play a BIG role in this upcoming season. Something tells me she might be trying to blow the lid off all the nefarious doings of those dastardly wonderful Underwoods. Patricia Clarkson, Campbell Scott, Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Boris McGiver and Derek Cecil also will return to wrap up the series. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

Did you know? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Wonder” (PG) — Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) is about to start fifth grade after having been homeschooled for most of his sheltered life by his parents, Isabel (Julia Roberts) and Nate (Owen Wilson). That would be anxiety-provoking enough, but Auggie has a cranial abnormality, for which he has had 27 surgeries in his short life. He sometimes wears an astronaut’s helmet. People — especially kids — react when they see him. But
• It was the multitalented Pierre Beaumarchais — born in the 18th century, he was a revolutionary in both France and America as well as a watchmaker, diplomat, musician, spy, inventor, publisher and arms dealer — who made the following sage observation: “It is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them.” • Sharks burp. Yep, even underwater. Evidently, it’s how they regulate the
this isn’t just Auggie’s story, and that is, perhaps, its greatest strength. It’s about kids figuring out how to treat their peers (and themselves); a sister struggling to be both supportive and seen; friendships and family; and ulti-
mately the power of kindness and the many forms of bravery. You will love it, and your kids will love it. It’s based on the bestseller of the same name by R.J. Palacio. “The Ballad of Lefty Brown” (R) — Lefty Brown (Bill Pullman, perfectly cast) is not a charismatic leader on the 1890s frontier; he’s more of a wing man or a sidekick type. Confidence is not the word that comes to mind when talking about Lefty. But after the shooting of his friend, a newly elected senator named Edward (Peter Fonda), he is thrust into the role of justiceseeker-in-chief. It sits awkwardly on his shoulders. Joined by a fame-hound, wet-behind-the-ears kid
Jeremiah (Diego Josef), and hardened but recovering alcoholic tracker Tom (Tommy Flanagan), Lefty must find Edward’s killers and bring them back in order to clear his own name. Everything about this movie is a love song to classic Westerns. Director Jared Moshe casts the wilds of Montana brilliantly, and his adoration for the genre is abundant. “Dealt” (NR) — Card tricks are fascinating, and Richard Turner is the king of both card tricks and being fascinating, as this well-done documentary shows. He’s a selfdescribed “card mechanic” (because he can “fix” a game), and his nimble fingers belie any hindrance to his art. You see, not only
depth at which they swim. • You’ve almost certainly heard people refer to the school they attended as their alma mater, but do you know where the term comes from? In Latin, “alma mater” means “bounteous mother.” It was in the early 1800s that people began applying the term their beloved schools. • The skin of the African elephant, the largest land animal alive in the world
today, weighs 2,000 pounds by itself. • You might be surprised to learn that the bagpipe did not originate in Scotland. This ancient instrument existed in Asia in the pre-Christian era. Those who study such things say that the Emperor Nero was a bagpiper, even performing publicly at Roman athletic events. • Those who keep track of such things say that, across the globe, there are more people who have cellphones than have toilets. • If you’re like most Americans, you’ve probably played with a NERF ball at some point in your life. You might not realize, though, that NERF stands for Non-Expanding Recreational Foam.
• Actor Tom Cruise attended 15 different schools when he was growing up. Thought for the Day: “A society that presumes a norm of violence and celebrates aggression, whether in the subway, on the football field or in the conduct of its business, cannot help making celebrities of the people who would destroy it.” — Lewis H. is Turner gifted in sleightof-hand, he’s also blind. Director Luke Korem explores Turner’s hefty talent as well as his back story and supporting players, including his tireless wife, his sister (also blind) and his son: Asa Spades. “Blade of the Immortal” (R) — Director Takashi Miike — who’s promoting this as his 100th film — does his glorious thing, combining an art for swordinduced blood spray with a penchant for humorizing gore and vengeance. Samurai Manji (Takura Kimura) lives forever in feudal Japan, an ageless
immortal. He is recruited as a bodyguard to Rin Asano (Hana Sugisaki), who seeks revenge on the warlord Kagehisa Anotsu (Sota Fukushi), who murdered her parents. There will be bloodbaths and dismemberment, but there also will be expert choreography and incredible fight sequences.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Do different types of dogs handle cold weather differently? My big Lab mix “Gertie” hates going out in the cold, even though she’s a good-sized dog (maybe a little too much, if you know what I mean). A few days ago on a morning walk in near-zero degree temperatures, we met two of Gertie’s neighborhood buddies, both small dogs. They were having a great time with their owner, romping around in the
snow, while Gertie was whimpering the whole time we were out. How can I get her to deal with the cold better? — Paul in Burlington, Massachusetts DEAR PAUL: Even though bigger dogs tend to do better in cold weather, every pup is an individual and has its own preferences. Gertie is clearly not a fan of cold weather, while her neighbors love being out in it and playing in the snow. That said, she shouldn’t just stay inside all the time, and you’re not taking her outside for very long. Try placing Gertie in a doggie sweater and booties anytime the temperature drops below 40 F. Take her for the usual walk — no more and no less — and give her lots of praise before and after
going outside. She may do much better with the sweater, even if she doesn’t really need it. If Gertie still doesn’t
handle cold weather well, minimize her time in it. She still needs to get in some active time or she’ll gain more weight. Maybe
she’d have fun spending a day or two each week at a doggie daycare that includes lots of time running and playing with

Brides 2018
Taking a hands-on invitation approach Invitations are a key component of wedding planning. Not only can invitations set the tone for a wedding — giving guests an idea of whether it is formal or casual while offering clues to the theme — but also they are essential for conveying important information about the festivities. While it was once common to work with a specialized printing and engraving company when ordering wedding invinations, couples tying the knot now have more options. Due in large part to computer and internet access, and myriad userfriendly design applications, it’s easier than ever to design high-quality wedding invitations. According to the wedding industry survey site TheWeddingReport.com, the average price for 150
invitations and response cards is $245. To maximize efficiency and come away with wedding stationery they will love, couples can employ the following tips and techniques. Start with the paper The heavier the stock, the more luxurious the invitations will feel. Quality stock also costs more. Wedding invitations should be printed on substantial stock so they don’t bend or feel flimsy. Industry experts say that 100 percent cotton paper is the most costly paper. Couples can choose from linen stock and textured surfaces as well. Expect to pay more for natural or handmade papers. Those concerned about price can choose the highest-quality stock within budget and then play with other invitation elements to con-

Engraving and letterpress Engraving and letterpress techniques are an art form and create unique wedding invitations. Engraving creates raised lettering while letterpress presses the lettering into the paper. Many people
do not have the equipment necessary to produce these designs at home, and if they want a truly highend invitation, they’ll need to use a professional printing service. Thermography is an alternative that can deliver raised print using heat and special inks. Printing companies
Options abound in regard to in-store and online printing companies. Many companies offer selfservice design templates that enable customers to tweak text and placement of some graphic elements and then have the invitations printed and shipped to their homes. Companies may provide stock samples and examples of lettering so that couples can touch and see the invitations prior to placing an order. At-home printing One of the more accessible invitation production methods is at-home printing. However, there are some limitations when printing at home. For example, couples who do not have a high-end printer may find that the text on their invitations is not as crisp and the ink may smudge. Also, paper
options may be limited to what the tray feeder can accommodate. Stock that is 80 pounds or 12-point stock is preferable, but anything more may jam around the print head. It may take some trial and error (and wasted paper) to perfect alignment and achieve the desired look.
DIYers also need to know about “bleed” designs. According to the advice site A Practical Wedding, bleed is a printing term for design elements or images extending beyond the trim edge so that unwanted white space is eliminated. Again, it may take some practice to get the desired look.
Couples have many different options when designing their wedding invitations, and some may even be able to design and produce their own.
Tricks to add ease to planning and fun Brides and grooms understandably feel a little stress when planning their weddings. Adding to the pressure is the fact that, according to a WeddingWire.com report, the average couple in their 30s spends $32,000 on their wedding. That is a lot of money riding on one day. But planning a wedding can be even more fun than it is stressful, especially for those couples who employ a few tricks of the wedding planning trade. 1. Fake the cake. Save some money by asking the bakery cake artist to decorate a foam-tiered “mock” cake for pictures and display, and serve guests from an inexpensive sheet cake in the kitchen. 2. Use labels. Once the guest list is finalized, create a database of guests’ addresses. Print out two sets of labels: One for addressing the invitations and the other to address the thank-you cards. 3. RSVP tricks: Number

While many people may view veils as a symbol of purity and chastity, various sources indicate veils had a more prominent purpose. Cosmopolitan magazine indicates that veils first became popular in ancient Roman times, when brides were covered head-to-two in a red sheet called a flammeum. The sheet was intended to scare off any evil spirits that might ruin the wedding. Veils eventually replaced f the flammeum to disguise the bride from those naughty spirits. Veils also were used to hide brides’ faces
be picked up at low cost at many retailers. 5. Create an email address. To have all of the wedding-related details in one place, create a separate email address exclusively for wedding correspondence. 6. Use veil weights. These weights can be sewn into veils to prevent fly-
aways during outdoor ceremonies or photoshoots. 7. Keep bugs at bay. Spray chair and reception table legs with insect repellent. Dryer sheets also can be tucked into inconspicuous spots to keep bugs away. 8. Save money on favors. Unless the favor is something to eat or something especially practical, you may consider skipping the favors altogether, as many guests tend to forget to take them home anyway. 9. Use page markers for seating. Use multicolored, self-sticking page markers to create easy seating arrangements. Each color can represent a category: His, Hers, Friends, Work. 10. Make a photo clothesline. A clever and inexpensive idea is to pin photos of the couple to a string, cataloguing how they met and their time together leading up to the wedding. 11. Use loose flower cen-
terpieces. Loose flowers in a vase are easier to sort and transport home for guests who want a memento. Make precut butcher’s paper or cellophane available to make bouquets. 12. Stock up on string lights. Lights can be wrapped around trees

To Have and To Hold Wedding costs: what to expect Newly engaged couples may experience an array of emotions when they sit down to plan their weddings. Some couples cannot wait to jump into planning and want to catalog every aspect of the process, while others may proceed with caution because they don’t know what to expect — particularly in regard to cost. Many couples find it difficult to create their wedding budgets because they have no previous experience to draw on. The wedding planning advisor CostofWedding.com indicates the average wedding cost in the United States is $26,720, with most people spending between $20,000 and $34,000. Seventh Heaven Event Catering
states that, in Canada, the average wedding costs around $30,000. Such costs can vary greatly depending on couples’ preferences, including where they hope to tie the knot. By breaking down wedding expenses, couples can get a clearer picture of how much they may need to pay for their weddings and where they may need to cut costs. t 3FDFQUJPO TJUF According to The Knot, a premiere wedding planning resource, couples can expect their receptions to eat up the largest chunk of their wedding budgets. Wedding reception venues may cost between $10,000 and $15,000. The average price for catering per person is roughly $70. Bar ser-
vice may be around $2,000 for a three- to four-hour party. Some reception sites combine the room cost with the food and beverage costs, while others have Ă la carte fees. t $BLF Wedding cakes
tend to be multitiered intricate designs, so they will cost more than birthday cakes. According to Statistics Brain, wedding dessert will come in around $390.
t .VTJD The Knot says wedding bands cost around $3,500, which is more than twice as much as hiring a deejay ($1,200). Soloists or ceremony musicians may cost around $650. t 8FEEJOH QMBOOFS Many couples employ wedding planners to make planning their weddings easier. Wedding planners cost an average of $1,300, says Thumbtack, a company that matches professionals with people who require their services. t 5SBOTQPSUBUJPO Limousines and other transportation prices vary depending on the vehicle(s) couples choose. The Knot notes that budgeting between $400 and $500 for transportation
might be wise. t 8FEEJOH HPXO Bridesto-be should expect their gowns to cost around $1,100 and the veil or headpiece to be roughly $120, according to the Association of Bridal Consultants. t 1IPUPHSBQIZ BOE 7JEFP Preserving wedding day memories costs around $2,800 for video and photography services, based on data from Statistics Brain. The smaller details, such as accessories, gifts, officiant fees, stationery, spa services, and favors can quickly add up as well. Couples should be sure to leave some wiggle room in their budgets for incidental expenses that may pop up.
What to consider when shopping for rings Engagements precede wedding dresses, flower arrangements, limousines, and even a couple’s wedding vows. And no proposal is complete without a ring. Knowledge of rings and stones is essential for those who plan to propose in the near future. A recent survey from the wedding resource The Knot in which 12,000 brides and 1,200 grooms in the United States were asked about their rings, found that people spend an average, of $5,978 on engagement rings. Recognizing the potential cost of engagement rings can help ring shoppers prepare for their purchases. In addition to considering costs, couples can employ the following tips to shop with confidence. t $VU DPTUT XJUI TUZMF Engagement rings can be costly, but many couples feel they are worthwhile investments. According to In Style magazine, a ring with a classic solitaire of one carat weight can cost thousands of dollars, while a band covered in just under one carat of tiny pavÊ diamonds will offer plenty of sparkle for a lot less money. t ,OPX ZPVS TFUUJOHT How the diamond is framed can affect how big it looks and even how much it sparkles. Gems framed with a bezel can give the illusion of a larger stone. t (FU UIF EFTJSFE DVU A skilled jeweler knows how to properly cut a stone to bring out its best radiance. From round to princess to emerald to marquise cut, cut styles can affect how the stone looks as well as the price. t ,OPX SJOH NFUBMT Platinum and gold are some of the most popular ring setting metals. Platinum costs considerably more than gold or
silver, but is long-lasting. Couples should weigh the cost versus benefit of splurging on a more expensive metal, or speak with a jeweler about a suitable substitute. t *OWFTUJHBUF QFSTPO BM TUZMF Men should pay attention to the jewelry their girlfriends wear so the engagement rings complement their style. Some
women love modern jewelry, while others gravitate toward vintage pieces. t $PNF JO VOEFS DBSBU Buying just shy of the next carat weight can save between 20 and 30 percent, offers The Knot. Plus, the size discrepancy probably will not be visible to the naked eye. t 5IJOL BCPVU USBEJOH VQ Some couples like to replace engagement rings with a more elaborate ring for a big anniversary. Some jewelers will accept the purchase of the engagement ring toward the price of a future ring. Jewelry stores are in the business of developing relationships with their customers. When purchasing engagement rings, couples can discuss their desires in regard to a ring, as well as their budgets.

From This Day Forward How to handle seating wedding guests Receptions may be big or small, lavish or casual. But regardless of their size or style, receptions all share a common element: They will require couples set up seating arrangement for guests. Even though assigned seating isn’t mandatory, selecting seats for a sit-down dinner makes things simpler and reduces confusion. Some reception venues may even require assigned seating so that catering staff can service tables accordingly.
Seating guests can be tricky, but employing a few strategies can make the process go quickly and smoothly. • Use a seating chart. A seating chart, whether it’s venue-specific or one couples make themselves, is essential. If you using a self-made chart, inquire with the venue about the shape of tables, how many guests each table can seat, and the location of tables around the space. • Start with the wedding
party table. Couples can ease themselves into the task of seating by doing the easy tables first. The primary one is the wedding party table. This traditionally can be a dais or a sweetheart table flanked by the wedding party. According to Martha Stewart Weddings, the table should be centrally located and the wedding couple should sit in the middle. A male-female pattern follows on either side of the couple, consist-
ing of the ushers, bridesmaids, best man, and maid of honor. If much of the wedding party is already married, couples may opt to have the wedding party sit with their spouses instead of at the dais. • Organize family tables. Tables for parents, grandparents and immediate family members of the bride and groom also are high priority. Both families can be combined at one table, or they can be separated into two tables.
These tables should be the closest to the bride and groom. • Consider mobility issues. Next seat guests who have specific needs at tables. Elderly guests may want to be away from the band, deejay or speakers. Guests in wheelchairs may need an accessible seat near the exit. • Get some help. Enlist the help of parents to seat their friends and extended family members. Parents may know best who gets
along and who should be separated. • Seat dancers near the dance floor. To encourage dancing, place guests who tend to be lively close to the dance floor so others can see them getting up to dance and join in. Couples can use apps, lists or self-made charts to plot their reception seating arrangements. Create place cards or a central chart so guests can find their seats promptly and easily.
Rustic bouquets add natural flair Couples opting to get back to basics, streamline their nuptials and create more intimate and less superficial affairs often gravitate toward rustic celebrations to showcase their ideals. Rustic weddings also may appeal to environmentalists and men and women who want their weddings to be as eco-friendly as possible. Rustic weddings may include those ceremonies and receptions that take place outdoors or in abodes, such as barns, wineries, castles, or converted silos or town factories. In fact, Bridal Guide says that barn weddings have never been more popular — among both urban and
rural couples alike. Coordinating a rustic wedding may mean letting go of perceived notions of how everything from food to favors to flowers should be. In fact, one way to describe rustic weddings — and especially the floral arrangements that adorn them — is “purposely imperfect.” Rustic wedding bouquets may seem like they were plucked right out of the garden or grabbed through a stroll in a meadow. They’re rarely symmetrical or feature the customary flowers of more formal wedding celebrations. When designing rustic bouquets, florists may
keep the stems of wildflowers or other blooms untethered for a relaxed feel. Long stemmed arrangements are quite popular, and trends point
toward bouquets that are loosely tied with raffia, twine, vines and other natural materials rather than more refined ribbon. Another way rustic bouquets set themselves apart is with the introduction of other elements into the arrangements. Not merely blooms and greenery, rustic pieces may feature twigs, vines, berries, scabiosa pods, ivy, and feathery ferns. The heights of elements in the bouquet are varied, and the bouquets will not have an overly uniform shape. Rustic bouquets are far from pretentious, and brides shouldn’t feel that these bouquets are delicate or will fall apart when handled.
When planning a rustic wedding, couples can work with their florists to cre-
ate bouquets and arrangements that fit with their visions.

Wedding transportation trends Couples planning their weddings routinely rely on professional transportation to bring them to and from the ceremony and reception. According to The Knot Real Weddings Study 2016, roughly half of all engaged couples will hire a transportation service such as a limousine or party bus for their weddings. Wedding transportation options abound, and some are more popular than others. The following are some of the ways couples
are getting to the altar on time. • Shuttles and buses: Investing in the guest experience means couples are seeking ways to provide comfort and convenience for their guests and wedding party members. Rather than asking guests to get themselves to and fro, couples may employ buses or shuttles stocked with amenities to transport a greater number of people. The Real Weddings Study indicates this type of transport has
grown considerably more popular in the last six years. • Exotic limousines: The chauffeur-driven limousine continues to be one of the most popular methods of transportation. However, to set their weddings apart, couples are trending away from traditional stretch limousines and renting something more trendy, such as limos built upon sports cars. SUV-based limos are still popular, with Hummers, Escalades and Navigators offering the wow factor. • Vintage cars: For that A-list look right out of a classic movie, stepping out of a vintage vehicle creates red-carpet moments. Dream cars for this type of glamorous arrival and departure include Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston
Martin and others. Many private companies rent classic vehicles. Couples also may contract with those who attend classic car shows. • Water transport: Couples celebrating by the ocean, a lake or a river can make a grand entrance aboard a vessel. Water taxis, pontoon boats and even sleek speedboats may be the transportation of choice. The Knot says that couples spend around 6.5 months researching their wedding day transportation options and will make their decision and a reservation five months before their weddings. The more exotic the transportation option, the earlier couples should make their decisions to ensure they can book their first choice.

HOLLYWOOD — The horses are off and running in the Oscar race, and it’s time to start making your picks for the big night on Sunday, March 4. Maybe the Hollywood Foreign Press got it right this year, because Hollywood insiders are already making their picks and the ballots haven’t even gone out. Gary Oldman is the frontrunner for best actor for his superb rendition of Winston Churchill (so much like Churchill you forget it’s Oldman). His next is “Hunter Killer,” with Gerard Butler, Billy Bob Thornton, Willem Dafoe and Common. But after the Oscars you can be sure his price will double.
Frances McDormand won a best actress Oscar for “Fargo” (1996) and was nominated three times as best supporting actress for “Mississippi Burning” (1989), “Almost Famous” (2001) and “North Country” (2006). She returns to the best actress category for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” McDormand will be heard in Wes Anderson’s animated feature “Isle of Dogs,” along with Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, Courtney B. Vance, Tilda Swinton and Scarlett Johansson, coming March 23. You can be sure her next film will cost them big bucks, win or lose.
• On Feb. 27, 1776, Commander Richard Caswell leads 1,000 Patriot troops in the successful Battle of Moores Creek over 1,600 British Loyalists. It was the first American victory in the first organized campaign of the Revolutionary War. • On Feb. 28, 1784, John Wesley charters the first Methodist Church in the United States. Although he was an Anglican, Wesley saw the need to provide church structure for his followers after the Anglican
Church abandoned its American believers. • On March 3, 1863, during the Civil War, Congress passes a conscription act that produces the first wartime draft of U.S. citizens. The act called for registration of all males between the ages of 20 and 45. Exemptions from the draft could be bought for $300. • On March 2, 1944, a train stops for more than 30 minutes in a tunnel near Salerno, Italy, and more than 500 people on board suffocate and die. The locomotives were burning low-grade coal substitutes, which produced an excess of odorless and toxic car-
Allison Janney Sam Rockwell is finally getting his due with a best supporting actor nomination, also for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” He’s turned in stellar performances for years, in “The Green Mile” (1999), “Galaxy Quest” (1999), “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (2002), bon monoxide, asphyxiating the passengers. • On March 4, 1952, Ernest Hemingway completes his short novel “The Old Man and the Sea,” telling his publisher it was the best writing he’d ever done. The critics agreed: The book won the Pulitzer Prize and became one of his bestselling works. • On March 1, 1961, President John Kennedy issues an executive order establishing the Peace Corps. Insiders feel Rockwell has a more dominant role than his costar Woody Harrelson, also nominated. Rockwell has done mostly low-budget films, and admits, “It’s nice to be in a film people actually see!” He’ll next be seen in “Mute,” with Alexander Skarsgard, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux, opening Feb. 23, and “Blaze,” directed by Ethan Hawke, co-starring Steve Zahn and Kris Kristofferson, which was screened last month at The Sundance Film Festival. paste •2 sprigs each fresh rosemary and thyme (or 1 teaspoon each dried)
Many kids dislike soft vegetables, the kind usually found in stew. If you’re having trouble getting your children to eat stew, try this saucy beef recipe -adapted from the wonderful cookbook “Real Food for Healthy Kids: 200-Plus Easy, Wholesome Recipes” by Tracey Seaman and Tanya Wenman Steel. Tracey’s teenage daughter said, “This is the only stew I really like, because it doesn’t have any mushy vegetables. I like my carrots crisp.” This rendition is made without carrots or potatoes so you can serve it — with its thick, rich gravy — over a mash of potatoes and parsnips, or a mound of fluffy rice. Add a side dish of crisp vegetables, or a salad, and serve it with some hot, crusty French bread, and you’ve got a meal that will please the pickiest eater. If you’re fortunate enough to have leftovers, you can stretch out the servings and transform your stew into French Dip sandwiches. Shred any remaining cubes of stew beef and re-heat the meat and any leftover sauce in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes until warm. Pour the sauce into a separate serving dish. Sprinkle some shredded Parmesan cheese on a whole-wheat hamburger bun or hot-dog bun, or a sliced hoagie roll. Place the bread on a cookie
sheet under a broiler or in a toaster oven until the cheese starts to melt. Pile the shredded beef on the bread and add a few dill pickles or slices of purple onion, if desired. You can serve the remaining sauce on the side for dipping, “au jus” style. This recipe is perfect for a crockpot or for slowcooking in a roasting pan in the oven. It also freezes well and can last for up to six months. This saucy beef stew is a bowlful of comfort on a cold day, or it makes a hearty sandwich for supper on a warm one. SAUCY BEEF STEW If you’re planning to prepare this stew in a slow cooker, follow steps one and two and then place the meat and the sauce in a crockpot, add the fresh or dried rosemary and thyme, cover and cook on low for 7 hours or until tender. Remove the sprigs of fresh herbs (if used), and season to taste before serving. •1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil •5 pounds lean beef chuck, cut into 1- to 2-inch cubes •Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper •3 extra-large onions, finely diced •5 garlic cloves, smashed and peeled •1/2 cup unbleached all-purpose flour •1 quart low-sodium beef broth •2 cups filtered water •2 tablespoons red wine vinegar •1 tablespoon tomato
Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a 6-to 8-quart heavy Dutch oven over medium heat. Add a third of the beef, season lightly with salt and pepper, and cook, turning infrequently, until browned, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with oil and the remaining beef and more salt in two batches. Add the last tablespoon of oil, and the onions and garlic to the pot; cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 6 minutes. Sprinkle the flour on top and cook, stirring constantly until thick and lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the broth, water, vinegar and tomato paste. Bring mixture to a boil. Return meat to the pan, add rosemary and thyme, and return to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 1-1/2 hours. Uncover pot and continue simmering for up to 30 minutes more, until the meat is nicely tender but still holds its shape. Remove the sprigs and season to taste before serving. Makes about 3 quarts. bouquet garni. Reserve the wine. Season the beef with salt and pepper. In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, warm the canola oil. Add the bacon and cook until browned and the fat is rendered, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon from the pot and set aside. In singlelayer batches, brown the beef chunks on all sides, then set aside. Brown the reserved onions, carrots and celery, about 10 minutes. Add additional canola oil to the pot if there is not enough bacon fat to brown all of the beef and vegetables. Return the beef to the pot with the vegetables and add 3 tablespoons of the butter. Sprinkle with the flour and cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes. Add the reserved wine and deglaze the pot, scraping up all the browned bits from the bottom. Add the bacon and stock and bring to a boil. Skim off the scum that rises to the top; once the scum is removed, add the bouquet garni. Simmer,
covered, over medium-low heat until the beef is very tender, about 1-1⁄2 hours. Remove the bouquet garni. Toward the end of the beef’s cooking time, bring the potatoes to a boil in a separate saucepan covered generously with salted water. Cook until tender, about 15 minutes. In a medium sauté pan, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium-high heat. Add the pearl onions and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the onions and cook until both onions and mushrooms are golden brown, about 5 minutes longer. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve the stew in bowls, garnished with the pearl onions, mushrooms and potatoes. Note: When shopping for beef, you won’t find a cut labeled “beef shoulder” — what you want is either a chuck roast of some sort or, from a bit lower on the shoulder, a cut labeled either “arm roast” or “round bone roast.”
Vegetarian dish packed with flavor Vegetarian dishes are often loaded with flavor, which might come as a surprise to those who do not adhere to vegetarian diets. In fact, many dishes that originated in India, a country known for its flavorful, spicy cuisine, are vegetarian dishes that are popular the world over, among vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. For those who want to try something simple, flavorful and vegetarian, the following recipe for “Lentils with Spinach” from Monisha Bharadwaj’s “India’s Vegetarian Cooking” (Kyle Books) checks all the boxes and will no doubt surprise those who feel the most flavorful dishes are those with meat. Lentils with Spinach Serves 4 •3⁄4 cup yellow lentils (toor dal), washed •3 large handfuls spinach, chopped •2 tablespoons sunflower oil, divided •1 teaspoon coriander seeds •3 dried red chiles •1⁄4 cup freshly grated coconut •1 teaspoon tamarind concentrate, diluted in 1⁄4 cup water •1⁄2 teaspoon turmeric •Salt, to taste
•1 sliced
medium
onion,
Put the lentils and 1-1⁄2 cups of hot water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are mushy, about 35 minutes. In the meantime, place the spinach in a pot along with a little hot water and heat it for a couple of minutes. Add it to the lentils. In a separate pan, heat half the oil and fry the coriander seeds until they turn dark, then add the chiles and coconut. Reduce the heat and stir for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat, let it cool slightly, then tip it into a blender along with the tamarind and a few tablespoons of water and blend until you get a fine paste. Add this to the lentils, along with the turmeric and the salt. Heat the remaining oil in a small saucepan and fry the onions until golden, then add them to the lentils. Reheat thoroughly and serve hot with rice.
EASY PASTA BOLOGNESE At its most basic, Bolognese means “meat sauce.” Although some recipes call for hours of cook time, we’ve boiled it down to 40 minutes flat. The result? A rich tomatobased sauce spiked with heavy cream that’s fantastic on any long pasta. •1 medium carrot •1 clove garlic •1 can whole plum tomatoes •3 tablespoons olive oil

Transfer the tomato mixture to a medium saucepan and simmer until thickened, 20 to 25 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to package directions. Drain and return to pot. While the pasta is cooking, heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add celery and onion, and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 6 to 8

minutes. Add the beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until no longer pink, about 4 minutes. Add wine and bring to a simmer. Stir the tomato sauce and cream into the meat mixture and simmer until thickened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the parsley and oregano. Toss the pasta with the sauce. Serves 6. TIP: Make the sauce omitting cream and herbs. Refrigerate for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. If frozen, thaw overnight in refrigerator. Reheat in a saucepan
over medium heat. Stir in cream and simmer for 3 minutes, then stir in herbs. SPICY GARLIC-CHILI OIL WITH PASTA A trip to your pantry is all you need to whip up this Italian staple that’s as basic as can be — with just four ingredients — but alight with flavor. Once plated, jazz it up with grated Parmesan if you like. •1 pound pasta •1/4 cup olive oil •6 cloves garlic •1 red chili Cook pasta according to

package directions. Drain pasta and return it to the pot. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until beginning to turn golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the chili and cook, stirring, until the garlic is golden brown and the chili is just tender, 1 minute more. Toss with the pasta. Serves 6. Three tips for managing your health (NC) — Life is unpredictable! Between family, friends and work commitments, it can sometimes feel like a juggling act. Managing your health, however, shouldn’t fall to the wayside, especially if
• Another nominee for removing antiperspirant stains: meat tenderizer. D.L. of Michigan writes: “Moisten the armpit area and then drag it through some meat tenderizer. Work it in, let it sit for five minutes or so, then launder in the hottest possible water.” • “Activity points are now a prerequisite in our house for allowance. Chores are still a part of the equation, but we are trying to instill how important it is to MOVE. I figure if my employer can incentivize me by lowering health-care costs if I use my Fitbit or participate in 5ks, I can ‘pay’ my kids to be active.” — Y.R. in North Carolina • White porcelain sinks are so beautiful in a country kitchen — but boy do those food stains just pop! No sweat, though. Just sprinkle liberally and scrub with baking soda, and then spray on a little hydrogen peroxide. Rub and rinse. • Sources say that if you are having a hard time keeping your eating in check, the key is to plan ahead. At the beginning of the week, make a list of exactly what you plan to have each day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as snacks. Then prep that food. Less decisionmaking midweek means less opportunity to make poor decisions. Good luck! • “My three kids (and their friends) were always losing, bending or otherwise ruining my good flatware. So, I bought a bunch of cheap stuff, a bucket to fit it in and I put it on the counter. It all goes in there together, and you know what? It’s no big deal. We just grab what we need and get on with our lives. I still have the good stuff, and it’s what we use on special occasions.” — T.Y. in Illinois Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
incorporating fibre-rich foods to help you feel full. 2. Exercise. An estimated 80 to 90 per cent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. It’s important to find ways to fit exercise into your lifestyle because it helps your muscles use glucose
and burn calories. Aim for a minimum of at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week. 3. Managing medication. Navigating treatment options and sticking to a regimen can be stressful. But once-weekly medications are available and
may reduce the burden some patients feel when taking medications every day. These medications help the pancreas release insulin to lower blood sugar levels. Speak to your doctor or find more information online at onceaweek.ca.
