Refer to the past, look where you are and think of the future

Business Strategy, sometimes referred to as strategic planning, is the building block for many other farm management practices. Developing a strategic plan for your farm business is the first step down the road of successful farm management. The successes and failures of the past give you valuable knowledge to help plan your future. Look at your successes and ask yourself “What did I do right?” Look at your failures as well to understand

what you did wrong. Many of us are not aware of the things we do right, simply because we do not consistently evaluate past activities. Knowing where you have been is an important step during the planning process of building a sound business strategy. It’s also important to know where you currently are. Take a real look at your financials and know what the numbers mean. Understand what is currently working and be hon-

By Cindy Elavsky Q: It seems like forever since I’ve seen a new “New Girl.” It hasn’t been canceled, has it? — Marianne K., via email A: The seventh and final season of “New Girl” — which stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone and Lamorne Morris — will return to FOX on Tuesday, April 10, at 9:30/8:30c with eight new episodes. The hourlong series finale will air May 15 at 9/8c.

Think green, think spring, think Saint Patrick’s Day coming up on March 17. Kids enjoy learning about interesting people and places. As parents, we can be instrumental in helping our children discover the diverse cultures that make up our world and our national heritage. That discovery is an important step in appreciating and respecting ethnic differences. To get started, enjoy some family fun this month as many Irish Americans celebrate the “luck of the Irish.” Here are some ideas and a craft to help keep you thinking “green.” 1. Go online or check out library books on Ireland. Learn the difference between Northern Ireland and The Republic

Zooey Deschanel Season seven takes place four years after we last saw the crew, with Jess and Nick returning from a European book tour and thinking about marriage.

of Ireland, and other interesting facts and curiosities about the Emerald Isle. Talk to Irish-American neighbors and discover what their families do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. 2. List names and surnames that are typically Irish, such as Liam, Megan, Shannon and O’Brien. Do any of your kids’ friends have Irish names? Any Irish ancestors in your family tree? 3. Make easy-to-create brilliant green shamrock suncatchers to hang in your window to welcome

est about what could be changed. By knowing the strengths of your business you will be better able to build on your strengths and keep moving forward. But also remember to take the time to look forward. Farm managers need to have a clear view of the future to create a business that is in line with their strategic goals. Know whether you want to expand your business, change your focus, increase your value added activities, or improve your

net income. You must be specific about your business goals, so that you travel in the direction you want to go. Be sure to consider things that are happening outside of your farm as well. What are the current market trends? What is happening within the Agricultural industry that may affect how you operate or what you produce? Being aware of what is happening and developing strategies to best deal with trends and indicators will

help you make the best possible decisions for your operation. The Ministry of Agriculture and RBC are proud to be able to bring Dr. Kohl to Saskatchewan to speak on a variety of topics around business strategy. Dr. David Kohl is an Agriculture Economist, award winning instructor, author and speaker from Virginia, USA with extensive knowledge in agriculture economics and business strategy. His experience working with

commercial banks, agriculture lenders and producers throughout the world can provide key insights for farm business management and transition planning. From March 26-29, Dr. Kohl will be delivering presentations in Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Tisdale and Saskatoon. For more information on these workshops, please contact your local Ministry of Agriculture office or the Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-457-2377.

This is complicated by the fact that Jess accepts a job working for ex-boyfriend Russell Shiller, with Dermot Mulroney reprising his role. Other new developments: Cece and Schmidt have a 3-year-old daughter; Winston and Aly are married and expecting their first child; and Damon Wayans Jr., David Walton, Nelson Franklin, Sam Richardson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner all are set to return with guest appearances. Q: I’ve really enjoyed watching the live musicals that different networks have put on throughout the years, such as “Grease,” “Hairspray” and “Dirty Dancing.” Can you tell me when or if someone will do

another one? — Reggie D. in Massachusetts A: Just in time for Easter Sunday is “Jesus Christ Superstar Live!” NBC will air this musical opus on April 1 (no fooling!), and the show will star R&B star John Legend as Jesus, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene and rock legend Alice Cooper as King Herod. “Superstar” composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice will executive produce, and Alex Rudzinski, who directed the Emmy Award-winning television version of “Grease,” will direct. Q: I loved the actress who played Jackie Kennedy in “The Crown.”

Can you tell me what else I can see her in? — Gina R., via email A: South African film and television actress Jodi Balfour absolutely nailed her role as one of America’s most loved and iconic first ladies. She will star in the British crime thriller “Rellik” (which is “killer” spelled backward), premiering April 13 on Cinemax. The series, which also stars “Game of Thrones” alum Richard Dormer, chronicles the hunt for a serial killer, but in reverse — hence the backward title. CORRECTION: This is when I admit I am human and actually make mistakes (!), but only once in a blue moon. A couple of

weeks ago, I highlighted French-Canadian actress Evelyne Brochu and her new series on Ovation called “X Company.” The series is loosely based on a true story and centers on the recruits from Camp X, the real-life first-known spy agency, which worked covertly for Allied interests during World War II. Anyway, I stated that the show airs Wednesday nights on Ovation, and it actually airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET. Please forgive the error, and be sure to watch this exciting new show. evenly over the wax paper. Set a second sheet of wax paper on top, this time waxed side down. Cover with a lightweight cloth. 4. Using an iron set at Warm, an adult may iron over the cloth until the shavings melt. Remove the cloth. 5. Make cutout shamrock shapes from your “stained glass” sheets. Glue string or fishing line to the top of each shamrock and hang them by a window. TIP: It’s easy to make a shamrock pattern by arranging three paper heart shapes with the points touching.

Make crayon shavings in piles, by shade, from the peeled crayons using a grater or a crayon sharpener. 3. Lay a sheet of wax paper, waxed side up, on a small stack of newspapers on an ironing board. Carbon milestone achieved by Power Station Since operations began in October 2014, the carbon capture and storage (CCS) process at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station has prevented

a total of more than two million tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. “With this milestone, the people of Saskatchewan

can be proud that we are making a difference in a concrete way,” said Minister Responsible for SaskPower Dustin Duncan. “The United

New Lt. Gov. announced Premier Scott Moe has announced that Saskatchewan’s 22nd Lieutenant Governor, W. Thomas Molloy, will be sworn in during a ceremony at the Legislative Building on March 21, 2018. “I look forward to Mr. Molloy assuming the role of Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor,” Moe said. “The role comes with a rich history of service to our province; Mr. Molloy’s background as a lawyer and negotiator

will see the people of Saskatchewan well served in the years ahead.” Molloy is a respected lawyer and author from Saskatoon. He will replace the outgoing Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield, who has held the position since 2012. Molloy was appointed to the role by the federal government in January. Under the Canadian constitution, he will serve as Lieutenant Governor for a minimum of five years.

Nations has said that CCS is essential to addressing climate change, and Saskatchewan is a global leader. It’s a commitment to environmental sustainability that we are making to future generations.” “It’s been an incredible opportunity to explore this groundbreaking technology as part of our power generating fleet,” said SaskPower President and CEO Mike Marsh. “BD3 continues to provide electricity to more than 100,000 of our customers. What’s more, it’s doing so with coal, and in a way that makes it one of the cleanest-burning fossil

fuel units on Earth.’’ The Boundary Dam CCS project in Estevan, Saskatchewan, is one of many initiatives the corporation is pursuing to keep up with the evergrowing demand for power in Saskatchewan. CCS is part of the company’s longterm strategy to keep growing with demand, while meeting environmental regulations and reducing the company’s carbon footprint. The strategy will reduce SaskPower’s greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2005 levels, by 2030. SaskPower continues to post full monthly updates

from the Boundary Dam CCS process on saskpower. com/blog.

At A Glance •SaskPower’s Boundary Dam CCS process has captured more than 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide since Oct. 2014 •Equivalent greenhouse gas emissions of 500,000 vehicles •CCS, as well as a target of up to 50% renewable by 2030, will bring SaskPower’s emissions down by 40% •Monthly updates continue on saskpower.com/ blog

Check natural gas equipment for ice SaskEnergy is reminding customers to work safely when clearing snow from around buildings, including rooftops, so as to not bury or damage natural gas meters or risers. Homeowners and businesses are also reminded to check their natural gas meters and rooftop heating equipment, as melting snow can cause ice buildup when it freezes overnight. SaskEnergy’s natural gas equipment is designed to operate safely in Saskatchewan winters. However, each winter, SaskEnergy responds to gas leaks caused by damage to meters due to heavy snow, ice buildup, or snow removal. Ice buildup can also affect the operation of the natural gas regulator, which is a safety design feature which prevents pressure from building up on gas supply lines inside a facility. In order to avoid damage, SaskEnergy has the following winter safety tips: • Keep the meter, regulator and shutoff valve free of snow and ice. Heavy amounts of snow or ice caused from sleet, freezing rain or a leaking eavestrough can cause damage to meter fittings and pipes, which can increase the risk of a natural gas leak. • Remove any built-up snow by hand – do not use a sharp instrument to scrape or chip off the ice or snow. Do not hit or kick the meter to break the ice or remove the snow build-up. • Do not use a snowplow or snowblower near your meter. Make sure you know where your gas meter is before you start your snow removal.

If you have any concerns about possibly damaging your natural gas equipment this winter, please contact SaskEnergy at 1-888-7000-GAS (427) to have the equipment checked and ice safely removed by one of our technicians.

Ice build-up can cause safety issues.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Thor: Ragnarok” (PG13) — Chris Hemsworth is back as Thor, this time defending Asgard’s imminent destruction at the hands of his evil sister, Hela (viciously embodied by Cate Blanchett). To get there, he will need to face the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in battle, escape imprisonment, cross the universe and enlist a cast of characters from the familiar Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and more. The latest install-

ment has Thor with shorter hair, no hammer (he loses it pretty early on) and an enchanting sense of humor. This Marvel Universe is the gift that keeps on giving. “Lady Bird” (R) — Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) is a high-school senior — rebellious, dra-

matic and inattentive of reality as she navigates her way through Catholic school, boyfriends, college applications and a deeply felt need for freedom and personal expression. It’s California in the early 2000s, and Lady Bird’s mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf) is left to support the family after her hus-

band loses his job, all the while Lady Bird dreams of an Ivy League education and some culture. It’s a real, touching look at the bonds between mother and daughter, parents and children, and partners in life. “The Breadwinner” (PG-13) — Eleven-year-old Parvana (Saara Chaudry) and her father tend a market stall in Talibancontrolled Afghanistan. They tell stories to pass the time. When a misunderstanding with a local official leads to the father’s arrest, Parvana cuts off her hair and disguises herself as a boy in order to feed her family. She is joined by her friend Shauzia (Soma Chhaya), and both explore the freedom and perils that come with the bold steps she has taken.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had a nuclear stress test as a requirement for a kidney transplant. The results of my test indicated that I had sustained moderate damage to my heart as the result of a heart attack. No further testing could be done because of the possible effect of dye on my kidneys. Six months later in a follow-up nuclear test, my results were normal and I was told that the problem

was an artifact. Would you explain what an artifact is? — M.J.N. ANSWER: An artifact, in this context, is anything that can keep the test from being interpreted correctly. People often think of medical tests as definitive — the stress test shows that either you have blockages in the arteries in your heart or you don’t — but it usually is not so clear. Even a perfectly normal stress test is possible in people with blockages, but the bigger the blockage, the more likely we can see them. In women, breasts can obscure the images from the radioactive dye used in a nuclear stress test, making it seem as though the inferior portion of the heart isn’t getting enough

blood, which is one of the most common artifacts leading to a false-positive diagnosis (when the test says there is an abnormality but there isn’t). It may be that on the follow-up test, the technician did a better job of placing the camera. Unfortunately, it also is possible that the second test was a false-negative test. In that case, the first stress test was correct that you had heart damage, and the second stress test failed to identify blockages

in the heart. This happens sometimes when there are multiple blockages diffusely in all the blood vessels, since the main thing the physician interpreting the test is looking for is more radiation (meaning more blood flow) in one part of the heart compared with another. Stress tests normally are quite accurate at detecting health and disease. When there are conflicting results, as in your case, sometimes the answer is clear from other

Stir in half and half. Add Velveeta cheese and black pepper. Mix well to combine. Continue cooking over low heat until cheese melts, stirring often. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine dry potato flakes and water. Mix well to combine. Stir in sour cream and margarine. For each serving, place 1/2 cup potatoes on a plate and spoon about 1/2 cup cabbage mixture over top. Makes 4 servings. Bolstered by a fertile imagination and a penchant for storytelling, she sets out to find and free her father before the family is found out. The animation style lends itself lovingly to the story, which is based on the “Breadwinner” book series by Deborah Ellis. “Faces Places” (PG) — The little gem comes from legendary French New Wave director Agnes Varda and enigmatic street artist JR. The perfectly odd pair take a leisurely journey around rural France, interacting with locals who become the focus of JR’s photographic installations — large-scale portraits printed from his mobile darkroom. It’s an adorable get-to-know-France tour. While Varda engages and quizzes the subjects, JR photographs and pastes

the prints to walls and structures along the way. They are complementary souls, artist besties whose friendship develops delightfully right in front of us. No surprise that it’s nominated for best feature documentary in this year’s Academy Awards. No surprise either that when Varda could not make it to the Oscars luncheon, JR took a life-size cardboard cutout to stand in for her. (Subtitled)

Since these have risks, it’s imperative that the patient discuss with an experienced clinician whether the test is worth those risks. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they are avoided. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 102W, 628 Virginia

Let’s just face it, after a long day at work (or play), most of us don’t want to prepare a meal. But with just a little planning, your freezer can become your favorite “fast food” place. Filling your freezer with pre-prepared meals saves time and money. It also ensures you’ll be eating something that is healthier than the typical fast-food meal. When you freeze meals in advance, you control the quality of the ingredients and the amount of salt. Almost everything from appetizers for dinner parties and breakfast dishes to complete meals and desserts can be frozen in advance with the proper planning and preparation. I usually prepare all of my family’s meals for the week on either Saturdays

HOLLYWOOD — Harrison Ford and Dr. Phil McGraw say they’ve come up with a pill they claim is better than Viagra for putting lead in a man’s pencil. When Ford recently appeared on Dr. Phil’s talk show, he told men how they can be as virile as Indiana Jones. Their pill is Vrdhhigra, and they claim it’s better than anything out there for erectile dysfunction. Harrison says it’s a blend of horny goat, Korean ginseng, potency wood (that sounds like they’re kidding!) and other Chinese herbs, but it’s their patented TRTT technology that makes these ingredients 185 times greater, and even GQ magazine recommends it. “Paddington 2” director Paul King is set to “reimagine” “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.” The original, “Willy Wonka” (1971), with Gene Wilder, cost $3 million but grossed only $4 million. It was remade as “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” (2005), with Johnny Depp, which did better, costing $150 million and grossing $475 million. Also being “reimagined,” by current “Shape of Water” director and Oscar-nominee Guillermo del Toro, is “The Cat in the Hat” (2003), which starred Mike Myers. Bette Midler has completed her recordbreaking Broadway run in “Hello Dolly” and now

is shooting “The Tale of the Allergists Wife.” Bette plays an upper-middleclass Westsider in the midst of a midlife crisis when her glamorous jetsetting friend, Sharon Stone, arrives to change her life forever. Sorry to report the loss of my longtime friend and legendary Hollywood publicist Ron Scott. Among the people he discovered and helped make famous were David Hasselhoff,

David Hasselhoff Richard Dean Anderson, John Stamos, Mario Lopez and Jason Bateman. He also launched the popular soap “The Bold and the Beautiful,” handling all 30 castmembers. Scott discovered the E Channel’s

FAST FREEZER TURKEY PATTIES These turkey patties are great as a main dish topped with some sauteed mushrooms and served with a side of rice and a salad. They’re also great for a quick sandwich using pita bread or on a hamburger bun. You can season and shape the patties and then wrap and freeze “Hollywood Medium,” Tyler Henry, and gave up all other clients to concentrate on him. As a result, Tyler is in his third season on E, has a bestselling book from Simon & Schuster and has been a sellout at numerous Indian casinos. Ron once arranged for a helicopter to lower a flying saucer atop the Capital Records building and have Ringo Starr step out for his “Goodnight Vienna” album. He’s the last of the old-time publicity-stunt Hollywood publicists. And speaking of David Hasselhoff, he’ll star in the full-length sequel to the short “Kung Fury” (which he appeared in), with two-time Oscar-nominee Michael Fassbender.

Cook 5 minutes on each side, or until no longer pink in the center and meat thermometer reaches 165 F. list and shop in advance. It’s never a good idea to cook on the same day that you grocery shop. It’s better to plan the shopping trip for one day and cooking for another day. This also allows you to take advantage of any sales you might find on meats or vegetables. You also can cook several different kinds of meats or main dishes and stock your freezer so that you have enough “fast food” meals for two to six weeks. I try to use recipes with similar ingredients or cooking times so that I can chop up all the vegetables I need at one time, or bake more than one dish in the

or Mondays. Sometimes I just cook all the meat or main dishes. Then all I have to do is steam some vegetables or prepare a salad, and dinner is served. I also prepare a few extra meals — using some of the same meats, spices or ingredients I already have on hand — and freeze them. By using a few freezer fast-food tips, you can serve a wellbalanced meal in minutes, and save money by preparing meals in advance and freezing them. Preparing meals in advance means you’ll have large amounts of food to shop for and to put away. Plan your meals, make a

oven. You also can stock your freezer by doubling the meals you make during the week. You can serve one of the dishes and then stock your freezer with the other. Make sure you securely wrap and seal your make-ahead meals to prevent freezer burn. Write the name of the dish and the date on a label or on the plastic wrap or plastic freezer bag to make the dishes easier to identify. Using freezer- and microwave-safe divided plates is one of the best ways to store individual, homemade frozen dinners. Leftovers are the perfect choice for these frozen dinners. The divided plates make the meals easy to defrost and re-heat in the microwave.

He would sketch a piece, then number certain sections for his assistants to paint. • Before the middle of the 18th century, it was not unusual for members of a play’s audience to be seated onstage, just a few feet from the performance. Understanding colic and potential remedies Whether they’re firsttime parents or veterans of the child-rearing game, parents of newborns may encounter many sleepless nights in the first few months of their children’s lives. Many babies are cranky from time to time, but those who seem to be especially cranky might be exhibiting symptoms of colic, a somewhat mysterious condition that children and parents alike would no doubt prefer to avoid. What is colic? Babies who are wellfed and healthy but cry for more than three hours per day, more than three days per week and for more than three weeks are said to be

dealing with colic. Colic can try parents’ patience, but it’s important for mothers and fathers to recognize that children do not enjoy colic any more than their parents do. It’s also important that parents recognize that colic is not a disease. According to the online parenting resource WhatToExpect.com, colic is a combination of behaviors that can last for hours at a time. Perhaps most frustrating for parents of colicky babies is that these behaviors can appear late at night and into the wee hours of the morning. When does colic typically surface? In babies that reach full-term, colic typically

begins when the child reaches two weeks of age. What To Expect notes that most bouts of colic peak around six weeks of age before tapering off as children reach three months of age, though symptoms may taper off later in preterm babies. What causes colic? Parents’ first instinct when babies begin to exhibit symptoms of colic might be to blame themselves. While the exact cause of colic is unknown, various theories suggest it’s not related to anything parents are doing. For example, one such theory links

colic to infants’ overstimulated senses. Newborns are born with an ability to tune out surrounding sights and sounds, but that ability begins to wane as they reach one month of age. According to the online medical resource WebMD, this may produce an oversensitivity to light and noise, and suddenly overwhelmed babies may become cranky as a result. As babies age and adjust to their environments, this crankiness begins to subside. What To Expect cites immature digestive systems, acid reflux, food allergies and sensitivity, and exposure to tobacco as

other potential contributors to colic. How can parents treat colic? Treating colic can be tricky and require some trial and error. Parents of newborns should speak with their babies’ pediatricians for advice on treating colic. Remaining calm when babies are colicky is no small task for many parents, but soothing infants can go a long way toward alleviating the stress they’re feeling when they’re exhibiting symptoms of colic. Parents who suspect overstimulation is the

cause of their babies’ colic may benefit by paying close attention to how their babies react to various stimuli before limiting interaction with stimuli that seems to trigger crying spells.

Creating a calm, peaceful environment also may help. And while parents understandably want to show off their newborns to friends and family, babies exhibiting symptoms of colic may benefit from fewer visitors until their symptoms have subsided.

Parents can learn more about colic by visiting WhatToExpect.com.

Easter symbolism complements the holiday Tradition plays an important role in Easter celebrations for many families. Cherished traditions and symbols of Easter may include anything from egg hunts to lilies to lambs. Understanding the importance behind these symbols can make sharing the miracle of Easter that much more special. Eggs Eggs are one of the more recognizable symbols of Easter. For Easter egg hunts, eggs are hardboiled and decorated in bright hues. It’s believed

that the origins of Easter eggs are both secular and religious. From the secular (once pagan) perspective, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life, according to The History Channel, and has been associated with pagan festivals that celebrate spring. Some Christians feel that Easter eggs represent Christ’s emergence from the tomb and his subsequent resurrection. Eggs were once a food not consumed during Lent, therefore painting and decorating them to mark the end of fast-

ing and penance became a way to celebrate Easter. Crucifix The crucifix is one of the central symbols of Easter and Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice. The crucifix also highlights the ability of God to give new life to people after death. In addition to wearing and displaying the cross during Easter, some people bake “hot cross buns” as another symbol of the season. Rabbit

The Easter bunny is very much a secular symbol of the holiday, but one that has become so ingrained with the season that many people ascribe to it a Christian meaning. Pagan celebrations of spring often linked rabbits or hares with the season because of their fertility and ability to bring forth new life. According to the Christian living resource Crosswalk, believers associate the rabbit coming out of its underground home as a symbol of Christ emerging from the tomb.

Lilies Lilies are often exchanged during Easter celebrations or presented as hostess gifts for those sharing the holiday meal with others. The American Bible Society says lilies grow in the spring around the time when Easter is typically celebrated. Also, because they look like trumpets, they can be a symbol that heralds Christ’s resurrection. Lamb The lamb is another symbol associated with Easter. Lambs were origi-

nally associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, when lambs were sacrificed and their blood was used to mark which houses contained those faithful to God. As a result of his crucifixion, Christ became the symbolic lamb for all — the ultimate sacrifice. In fact, Christ is often referred to as “The Lamb of God.” Easter is replete with many recognized symbols. Unearthing their meanings can be a learning experience and a way to further immerse oneself in this holy holiday.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This winter has been especially icy in the Northeast, and for the first time ever

I noticed a cut on the front paw of my short-haired mutt, Hansel. It’s on one of his paw pads and is pretty deep. I’m not sure how he cut it. I cleaned it well, but it doesn’t look any better — his pad is swollen and he doesn’t like standing on it. What else can I do? — Edgar in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR EDGAR: This is the perfect time to

call the veterinarian and bring Hansel in to have it checked out. For small cuts, owners usually just need to make sure they’re clean and watch for signs of infection. However, once you see or suspect infection, it’s time to consult the pros. Since Hansel is limping or keeping his paw up, he’s definitely uncomfort-

able and in pain. The vet can make sure the infection is confined to just the pad, and that Hansel isn’t developing any complications. Likely, they will clean the wound again and recommend an antibiotic ointment. The vet also may recommend an oral antibiotic to prevent a more serious infec-

tion. To keep Hansel from licking the injured paw, he may have to wear what my sister-in-law likes to call the “cone of shame,” a temporary collar that looks like a lampshade. Silly as it looks, it can help the pad heal. You did a great job checking Hansel’s paws

after every walk and cleaning off any salt and sand — another big annoyance in the frozen north, as many pet owners can attest. Once he is fully healed, continue those daily walks outdoors. I’m sure he looks forward to them. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

• “Where do I keep my makeup wipes? On my nightstand, or better yet on my bed so that I don’t come home and not take off my makeup.” — Y.E. in Florida • “When making cookies that are dropped by the spoonful, dip your spoon in milk first, then scoop. The dough drops perfectly, and the milk does not affect the finished cookie at all.” — F.D. in Pennsylvania • “If you’re having trouble opening a jar, try slipping on a pair of latex dishwashing gloves for extra traction. Also try banging a little around the edge of the metal lid to disturb the vacuum seal. This has worked for me many times. Just be care-

ful not to bang it so hard that you break the glass jar!” — A.L. in Texas • “Place a section of newspaper in the bottom of your fridge to catch spills and to absorb odors. Line your vegetable crisper drawer with a paper towel, especially if you keep your potatoes in the refrigerator. Finally, do not store your milk on the door, because items there are subject to increased temperature fluctuation, every time you open the door to decide what to snack on!” — M.R. in North Carolina • “If you want to ripen avocados fast, put them in a brown bag and add a slice of lemon.” — Pat in New York • No need to purchase pricey seed-starting kits, use a toilet paper roll instead! Just cut the roll in half, set upright in a tray, fill with dirt and seeds, water, and away you go. When you start a tray inside, you should be ready for planting after the danger of frost is over. Oxidation levels distinguish tea types Few beverages are as tradition-rich as tea. Brewed and enjoyed the world over, tea has been consumed for its medical benefits and soothing properties for thousands of years. Many people may be surprised to learn that all teas are made from the leaves of the same plant species, according to The Tea Spot. However, weather and soil types can influence the final tea product. Tea originates from the camellia sinensis plant and produces white, green, black, oolong, and pu-erh teas. The variety is determined by how much the tea leaves are allowed to oxidize. • White tea: White tea leaves are oxidized the least and are the closest thing to a fresh tea leaf. According to research published in the Tea and Coffee Trade Journal, 20 percent of white tea is made up of catechins, which can help people fight the flu, lower their cholesterol and maintain a healthy blood pressure. Research at Pace

University has indicated that white tea can retard the growth of bacteria that causes infections. • Green tea: These leaves are oxidized more than white tea, but less than black tea. According to Lipton, this produces a light, fragrant tea. The lack of oxidation will contribute to the low caffeine content of green tea. Like white tea, the catechins in green tea are potent microbials and may even inhibit cancer growth, according to The National Cancer Institute. • Oolong tea: Falling between green and black teas, oolong tea is created when the oxidation process is halted just as the leaves start to turn brown. Oolong tea is high in polyphenols. According to Healthline, polyphenols may improve or help treat digestion issues and help people maintain healthy weights. Polyphenols also can help people with diabetes, neurodegenerative disease and cardiovascular diseases. • Black tea: Black tea is the world’s most common tea. It has higher levels of

caffeine per cup and can stimulate mental alertness and raise energy levels. Black tea also has high levels of antioxidants. • Pu-erh: Pu-erh teas are aged and fermented, and in Asia these teas have long been touted for their medicinal benefits. Pu-erh black tea has more caffeine than regular black tea. In China, pu-erh tea is commonly consumed as a detox tea, and some people regard it as a safe dieter’s tea. • Chai tea: Chai tea is not a variety of tea leaf, but a means of preparing black tea. Chai tea traces its origins to India and is typically a spiced milk tea made with rich black tea and spices like cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and pepper, as well as heavy milk, states ChaiTea.org. Many tea afficionados say that loose teas typically have more antioxidants than tea bags, which may contain more tea “dust” due to over-processing. Loose teas use the whole leaf. Anyone can enjoy loose tea by investing in an inexpensive tea infuser.

Snoring side effects Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere

nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those

who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

How humidity can make homes more comfortable Central heating and cooling systems have revolutionized the way homeowners make their homes comfortable. But many people find that heating and cooling systems have a tendency to make areas in their homes more dry than they would be if the windows were open. Without adequate indoor humidity, static electricity proliferates, and living environments may not be as pleasant as they could be. According to Lennox, makers of heating and cooling components, dry air can compromise peoples’ respiratory systems. When membranes in the nose and throat dry out, they cannot capture dirt, viruses and bacteria, potentially resulting in illness. Dry air can cause itchy, flaky skin as well as irritation in the nose, leading to nosebleeds. Dry air in a home also can affect the structure of a home. Dry air will pull moisture from wherever it can be sourced, including wood structures in a home.

This may cause walls and door jambs to shift and floors to creak. Even wood furniture can bend and crack if indoor conditions are especially dry. Homeowners can remedy dry air in various ways. Some methods are relatively simple, while others may require substantial financial investments and even some renovation. DIY remedies Do-it-yourself remedies are simply ways to put moisture in the air. One of the easiest steps is to put bowls filled with water in front of or on heating registers or radiant heating units in the house. The water will evaporate slowly into the home. Another and similar tactic is to boil a large tea kettle or pot of water to distribute moisture throughout a space. When showering, leave the door to the bathroom open to distribute steam throughout the house. For those who use the tub, allow the water to cool off and evaporate before pulling the drain.

Humidifiers Humidifiers come as whole-house central units or portable devices. Portable units can be moved from room to room depending on where moisture is needed the most. These humidifiers hold a predetermined volume of water and mist it into the air when the unit is on. Central humidifiers work with the home’s HVAC system. They are hardwired and plugged into the system. Water vapor is introduced into the air that will be forced through vents throughout the house. These systems work on the whole house at once, making them quite efficient. Many experts advise homeowners to keep their indoor home humidity between 40 and 60 percent for ultimate comfort. Investing in a hygrometer to measure relative humidity will help homeowners keep humidity at a level that produces a pleasant and comfortable environment.

A few safe ways to deal with sinus pressure Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back

of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep

the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “brain-eating” amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use prepackaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

POST A PHOTO OF YOUR PET TO OUR… Carbon Facebook monoxide CUTEST PET CONTEST remediation 3 Categories to Enter Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. Because carbon monoxide is found in the fumes produced when fuel is burned, it is present in and around homes. As a result, homeowners should be aware of carbon monoxide and make every effort to detect its presence. CO forms most readily when there is insufficient oxygen to complete combustion and produce carbon dioxide. Hot water closets, furnaces in crawlspaces, heating appliances in attics, and other contained areas are common areas where CO can form. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that thousands of people visit emergency rooms and are hospitalized because of CO poisoning every year. While CO is a risk for just about anyone, infants, the elderly, those with breathing problems or chronic heart disease, and people with anemia are most likely to get sick from CO. CO has earned the moniker “the silent killer” because it cannot be identified without the presence of a carbon monoxide detector. If a person believes he or she is smelling carbon monoxide, that person is probably mistaking the odor for other combustion byproducts that the human nose can sense. CO is a byproduct of vehicle exhaust, boat engines, stoves, lanterns, grills, furnaces, and fireplaces. CO is produced anytime something is burning. That is why it is essential that products designed to be used outdoors are used exclusively outside, and that indoor appliances are properly vented to the outdoors. CO can build up indoors

and poison people and pets who breathe it in. Some people may not recognize that CO is problematic in a home until multiple residents start complaining of similar symptoms. Common CO poisoning symptoms include nausea and vomiting, dizziness, chest pain, confusion, headache, and other flulike symptoms, advises the consumer advocacy group Carbon Monoxide Kills. Those with repeated exposure to high levels of CO may eventually develop cerebral edema, which is a swelling of the brain. CO can compress brain cells and destroy them, leading to neurological issues and death. CO poisoning is actually the result of the head and heart not receiving sufficient oxygen. CO detectors can save lives and should be installed in all homes and apartments. The National Fire Protection Association says CO detectors “shall be centrally located outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.” Individuals should follow the manufacturer instructions regarding where on the wall or ceiling the CO detectors should be mounted. As an added safety precaution, CO detectors should be placed on every floor of the home. Gas sensors in CO alarms have limited life spans, so they should be replaced generally every five to six years, because calibrating and testing for CO is more difficult than simply replacing the alarms. Installing or replacing carbon monoxide detectors is an easy improvement that can help save lives.
