PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Greatest Showman” (PG) — Witness the rise and drive behind America’s original sanguine starmaker, P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman). His story runs from his roots in poverty, through a series of failed business opportunities, to his allin gamble collecting what were the dregs of society, and duding them up to be displayed as jeweled rarities ... and it does so with original music and dance numbers! Jackman plays Barnum as relentlessly positive and captivating, and Michelle Williams is a real sweet-
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You easily handle your tasks this week, thanks to those high energy levels that never seem to run down. But pace yourself, Lamb, for the demanding week ahead. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) With the arts dominant this week, you might want to pick up any of those creative projects you’ve neglected. A workplace situation benefits from some fresh insight. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Music helps replenish your energy levels. Stream your playlist if you must. But a live concert could prove more rewarding, especially if you go with
D
Vicky Krieps, Daniel Day-Lewis in “The Phantom Thread” heart as Barnum’s wife Charity. The music alone is wonderful: You can feel the confidence blooming in “This Is Me,” and the butterflies in your stomach during “Rewrite the Stars,” the rope-swinging love song between Philip Carlyle (Zac Efron) and Anne Wheeler (Zendaya). “My Friend Dahmer”
(R) — This dark little film is a portrait of a young Jeffrey Dahmer told from the perspective of his reallife high-school pal Derf (Alex Wolff). Ordered by his clueless dad (Dallas Roberts) to “get some friends,” Dahmer takes up with a small cadre of kids who form a Dahmer fan club, inserting Dahmer
that very special someone. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Close friends reach out to help perk up your lagging social life. That workplace situation also eases, leaving you time to do more fun things by week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A revelation clears up that perplexing job-related problem. Some changes will have to be made, which, no doubt, will meet with the Big Cat’s roaring approval. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Reaching out to someone in need is the noble thing to do. But try to restrain the temptation to add a lecture — no
matter how well-intended — to your good deed. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There could be another tough challenge to face before the month is over. But all that hard work is winning you lots of important recognition from your peers. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Keeping to your work schedule could prove difficult with all those personal distractions. Best advice: Stay with it. There’ll be time later for socializing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Jumping hurdles this week might be vexing for most, but not for the sage Sagittarian, who recognizes that meeting a challenge can open up opportunities. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) More obstacles might be thrown in your path as
into a variety of pranks and hijinks. But alone, he’s a young man on the fringe — weird, fixated on a local jogger, vulnerable and detached. He slowly mutates into a killer, as his unhinged mother (Anne Heche) battles mental illness. If you are a fan of Ross Lynch from his “Austin and Ally” days on Disney, be prepared for a sudden, disturbing turnabout. “The Phantom Thread” (R) — Set in the high-fashion world of London in the early 1950s, Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel DayLewis) rules as a couturier to the elite. His fashion house is managed by his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville). He is highly organized, strictly controlled by routine and a confirmed bachelor. While delivering a piece to a client of great esteem, he is you try to finalize a new agreement. But the surefooted Goat ignores the stumbling blocks and stays the course. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) We know the Water Bearer takes pleasure in giving to others. But why not let someone else enjoy the experience too by accepting that offer of help? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might find that you need to ease up on your hectic schedule this week. Don’t fret about it. It could be helpful to take a break and replenish your energy supply. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of finding practical solutions to complex problems, and you do it with grace.
captivated by a waitress in a countryside restaurant. He woos Alma (Vicky Krieps), and she becomes his lover, muse, and ultimately, wife, but not before their tormented wills unfurl and collide: Stitched together in one place, the seams are ripped apart in another. The film, which received six Oscar nominations, is another rousing success for director Paul Thomas Anderson. “Braven” (R) — “Big and beautiful” describes both the mountain scenery in this standard but well-done action feast and its star, Jason Momoa. He plays gentle giant Joe Braven — father, husband and logging-company owner. He heads up to his cabin in the woods with his good old dad to button it up for the season, when lo and behold, they come across a giant bag of cocaine, which was stashed in the cabin by
some drug traffickers. While there’s only one gun and a bow and arrows in the cabin, you get the idea that Mr. Braven is skilled in the art of defense — and you won’t be disappointed to see how. Garret Dillahunt does a wonderful turn as the villainous bad guy Kassen.

Course teaches grain entrapment rescue By Sean Mott Staff Writer A volunteer will be submerged in grain up to their waist on Apr. 20, but fear not; they’ll be in no real danger. They’ll be part of an event meant to raise awareness of grain entrapment rescue procedures. A grain entrapment simulation is being held on Friday, Apr. 20, at the Merv Moore Sportsplex in Melville. The simulation will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Canadian Agricultural Safety
Association (CASA), Parkland College, and the City of Melville are hosting the event, which is open to the public. “We’re hoping for a big turnout,” said Darrell Landels, a Business and Training Representative with Parkland College. Landels has been a big force in organizing and promoting the upcoming event. “CASA approached Parkland College and asked if we would be interested in their initiative,”
he said. The simulation is part of CASA’s BeGrainSafe program, which began in Manitoba last year. The event travels western Canada, educating people about the dangers of grain entrapment and how victims, bystanders, and rescue workers should respond when someone becomes stuck in grain. Bobbi Kiesman, the Agricultural Safety and Health Specialist with CASA, said the BeGrainSafe program was inspired by accident
trends. CASA analyzes farm injury data and they discovered grain entrapment creates a significant risk for Canadians. They designed the simulation and education program to guide people through this perilous situation. CASA brings a simulator trailer to the event, which allows them to replicate a grain entrapment scenario. A volunteer is lowered into the grain, with special precautions to ensure their safety. “[They’re] not in harm’s way,” Kiesman said.
SaskTel high speed in Ebenezer Recently, SaskTel announced that it has launched High Speed Internet service in the Village of Ebenezer. Residents can now enjoy the benefits of SaskTel’s High Speed Internet service with two packages to choose from, interNET Extended 5 and interNET
Extended 10. “This is very exciting and long-awaited news for our village,” said Braden Ferris, Mayor of Ebenezer. “Having High Speed Internet benefits all of the households in our community and is especially exciting for our students and small businesses.”
“The Government of Saskatchewan and SaskTel are committed to providing the rural communities of our province with the modern communication services they need to compete and thrive on the world stage,” said Don Morgan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser was held at the Yorkton Bowl Arena on the weekend. The annual event raised
just over $25,4000, earmarked for Yorkton and area mentoring programs.
“We’re pleased to bring High Speed Internet to the people of Ebenezer,” said Doug Burnett, Acting SaskTel President and CEO. “With our High Speed Internet service our customers have all the bandwidth they’ll need to surf, stream and download as much content as they want without having to worry about usage limits.” High Speed interNET Extended 5 offers download speeds of up to 5 Megabits per second (Mbps) while High Speed interNET Extended 10 offers download speeds of up to 10 Mbps. Both packages include unlimited usage, free installation, in-home Wi-Fi, spam and email virus filtering, and 24/7 helpdesk support – all for one low monthly price. These upgrades are part of SaskTel’s commitment to invest $1.4 billion in capital in Saskatchewan through 2016-2021. These Investments will ensure that all Saskatchewan residents will continue to receive some of the best communication and entertainment services in the world. For more information please visit www.sasktel. com.
Firefighters save the volunteer with rescue augers and other devices, walking the audiences step-by-step through their process. “It’s a great program,” Kiesman said. CASA will also debut their Train the Trainer program in Melville. The course has been taught in other provinces, but it will appear in Saskatchewan for the first time this week. The program involves professional firefighters training volunteer fire-
fighters from across the province in how to handle grain entrapment rescue situations. The students will be able to return to their home towns and train their fellow volunteers.
“We’re really excited,” Kiesman said.
Darrell Landels thinks the education program ensures participants will have a better chance to save people trapped in grain. “Having a grain rescue plan gives [people] confidence,” he said.

Fertilizing perennial forages Range Management Extension Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Many feed yards will likely be low on forage carryover this spring. Relatively dry conditions last summer for much of the province and a long feeding period this winter have combined to create this situation. Even though feeding is not over, it is still not too early to be thinking about next winter’s roughage supply. There are many potential roughage options to choose from.
These include perennial hay or silage; annual greenfeed or silage; stockpiled native, tame or annual pasture; swath grazing; corn grazing; and crop residues either baled or field bunched. Every operation has a unique set of circumstances and resources, and each manager has to decide which may be the most probable to pursue both physically and economically. Further considerations to factor are the unknowns such as delayed seeding, hail damage and early frosts on annual crops that can significantly add to the
roughage supply later in the season. Perennial hay (alfalfa and/or grass) has been the traditional forage base for many operations. When land that has been annual cropped for decades is initially seeded to alfalfa/grass combinations, the hay yield is somewhat artificially high during the first four to five years. This is because perennial forages are able to tap into moisture and nutrients that are below the rooting zone of what the annual crops could reach. If fertility levels are not maintained and yields are
allowed to decline below what is feasible to harvest with machinery, managers can either fertilize, convert to pasture or terminate. Stands dominated with beneficial legumes and grasses are candidates for commercial fertilizer application to increase yields. Normally grasses are lacking nitrogen, and legumes are lacking phosphorus. The yield responses from commercial fertilizers can be quite variable, depending to a large degree on moisture after application. As a minimum, consid-
er fertilizing to the level of nutrient removal in the hay harvest. A ton of alfalfa/grass hay at 50/50 mixture contains about 45 lbs nitrogen, 9 lbs phosphorus, 40 lbs potash and 3 lbs sulphur. Potash may not be required to the degree that it is being removed, as many Saskatchewan soils are considered adequate. Along with increased yield, phosphorus fertility helps to maintain the legume in the stand which is critical for fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere. Soil test results on older, unfertilized mixed stands will virtually
always show nitrogen and phosphorus deficiencies. If you decide to apply commercial fertilizer, stake out test strips across representative areas of the field. In order to demonstrate the yield responses, leave at least one test strip with no fertilizer and double back on another strip to double the rate. Otherwise you will not know the benefit or have any measure of increased yield from the added fertility.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know about warts. I know they are common in both children and adults. I have one on my thumb. I am 50 years old. Where can the warts spread to? I heard you can find them only on your hands and feet. Is that true? — J.S. ANSWER: Warts are raised round or oval growths, caused by the human papilloma virus. Although they most commonly occur on the hands and feet, some strains of HPV are more likely to cause warts in the genital region. Warts can appear on any part of your body, and you can spread them from one part of your body to another, as well as from person to person. Warts are more likely to occur in areas of skin that are irritated, such as cuts, scrapes and even areas that are shaved. For this reason, it’s a good idea to treat the wart quickly, preferably before it gets bigger and harder to treat.
Over-the-counter wart treatments are most commonly salicylic acid. A nail file or pumice stone to get rid of dead skin first increases effectiveness. Liquid medicine is used for thinner warts, and a plaster is more effective for thicker warts. One home remedy is as follows: Apply silver duct tape to the wart and leave it on for six days. Follow up by soaking the wart and removing any dead skin, then leave the tape off overnight. Repeat the process by applying duct tape for another six days. This is effective in some people. You should see your doctor if these home remedies don’t work. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them
in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many articles about high blood pressure, but I want to know about low blood pressure. What is normal? What is low, and what is dangerously low? I have a heart issue for which I take medication. I want to know if my blood pressure is too low. — Anon. ANSWER: Among young adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults. For people with
healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting. In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications used for CHF reduce blood pressure, which can even limit the amount of medication that can be used. In people with blockages in their arteries, too low a blood pressure can cause inadequate blood flow to parts of the heart and cause angina symptoms. The blood pressure is dangerously low when a disease process is causing the low blood pressure. In extreme cases, low blood pressure is one of the most dangerous signs of shock. But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome.

CORKSCREW PASTA WITH SPRING VEGGIES Toss sauteed asparagus and leeks with pasta and creamy goat cheese. Yum! •1 bunch (about 1 pound) leeks •1 package (16 ounce) corkscrew or bow-tie pasta •1 tablespoon margarine or butter •1 pound asparagus, trimmed and cut diagonally into 2-inch pieces •1 package (4 ounces) soft goat cheese, cut into small pieces Cut off roots and leaf ends from leeks. Discard any tough outer leaves. Cut each leek lengthwise in half, then crosswise into 1/4-inch-wide slices. Place leeks in large bowl of cold water; with hand, swish leeks around to remove any sand. Transfer leeks to colander. Repeat process, changing water several times, until all sand is removed. Drain well. In large saucepot, prepare pasta in boiling salted water as label directs. Meanwhile, in nonstick 12-inch skillet, melt margarine or butter over medium heat. Add leeks and cook until almost tender, about 5 minutes, stirring often. Stir in asparagus, 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper; cook 5 minutes longer, stirring often. Add 1/3 cup water; cover and cook 3 to 5 minutes, until asparagus is tender-crisp.
• Don’t throw toads out of your garden! There’s hardly a better pest-control method than these good old-fashioned bug eaters. Toads can eat hundreds of bugs a week, and they don’t cost a dime. They are a gardener’s good luck! • “How to never have cloudy ice tea: Brew tea bags in hot water; steep for 4-5 minutes and remove bags to cool. Mix to taste with room temperature water and let the whole business cool down before you put it in the fridge.” — J.G. in Alabama • To clean your car’s cup holders, use this sneaky trick: “Find a large cup that just fits inside the holder. Slip it down inside a sock, and then spray the bottom of the sock with all-purpose cleaner. When you put the sock-covered cup in the cup holder, it can get down in there and scrub off the gunk.” — R.E. in Texas • It’s hard to measure out sticky substances like honey or molasses when you’re using a measuring cup. They cling to the inside, and you’re never sure that you added the right amount. The next time you’re cooking with something sticky, spray the inside of the measuring cup with cooking oil. It will slide right out. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES
Marlena was appalled when she learned that Stefan and Gabby were romantically involved. Hope returned home from Hong Kong. Brady made a bold bet with Eve. Lucas tried to dissuade Chloe from considering Miguel’s offer. Stefan and Gabby went to extremes to make sure Marlena didn’t reveal their secret. Adrienne had a surprising suggestion for Will’s first “Spectator” article. Vivian urged Leo not to give up on the plan to take down Sonny. Rafe vowed to fight for his marriage to Hope. Tripp made an unexpected choice between Ciara and Claire. Wait to See: John searches for Marlena as she tries to convince

kind of stuff often takes me out of the story. I’m also excited to see what this new crop of actors will bring to their roles. And don’t feel bad for the original actors. They knew going into the project that they would be recast after season two, and they all agreed with the logic of the decision. For season three, we’ll catch up with the Royal Family in the ‘70s. We’ll also get to meet Camilla Parker Bowles, who, as you know, dated Prince Charles before he was betrothed to Princess Diana. Early word has it that producers are on the hunt for Diana and Margaret Thatcher, both of whom will be heavily featured in season four (not season three, as previously
time. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners less than 2 percent of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38 percent of the time. Now, I know Betty and Wilma are purely indoor cats, which vastly improves their chances for healthy, long lives. However, accidents happen. Doors get left ajar. Thunderstorms roll in. And indoor cats ... get outside. Your cats probably have collars and tags — and
that’s great. But cats are notorious for slipping their collars. While a microchip doesn’t guarantee your cats will be found and reunited with you, it does greatly improve the odds. Microchips have been standardized and data networks greatly improved over the past decade. So, while it is always your choice to microchip your cats, I do think it’s worth the extra cost to do so. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.
By Cindy Elavsky Q: I was so excited to read in your column that Helena Bonham Carter will be joining “The Crown” for seasons three and four. Do you have any more casting news? — Katie F., via email A: As you know, we have our new Queen Elizabeth, Olivia Colman, and our new Princess Margaret, Helena Bonham Carter. Now get ready for your new Prince Philip: “Outlander” and “Game of Thrones” star Tobias Menzies. As I wrote previously, the roles
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: To save money, I take my two cats, “Betty” and “Wilma,” to a local shot clinic that is held every spring. This year, the tech asked if I wanted my cats microchipped. I said no, because they’re indoor cats and it seems like an unnecessary expense. He looked at me like I was almost a criminal for not saying yes! What do you think? — Dottie in Knoxville, Tennessee DEAR DOTTIE: It’s entirely your decision whether to microchip your pets, so there was no need for the tech to get all judgmental about it. Since I have your attention, though, allow me to throw some statistics your way. A 2009 study cited by the American Veterinary Medical Association found that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 22 percent of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned 52 percent of the

speculated). According to the BBC, filming won’t begin until this summer, with season three premiering sometime in 2019. But don’t despair: Seasons three and four will be filmed back to back, so there won’t be quite as long a wait after the third installment. Q: I know George Clooney’s twins have probably been keeping him pretty busy, but when will I get to see his handsome face onscreen again? — Kyle R., Boston A: George makes his return to series television soon as director, executive producer and star of the original Hulu series “Catch 22,” a sixpart limited series based on the seminal novel of the same name by Joseph

No word yet on when the series will premiere. READERS: I know many of you have been waiting with bated breath to find out whether your favorite CW shows have been renewed. Without further ado, let me announce with glee that my favorite CW show, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” will return for a fourth season. Although I am bummed to hear that it will be

Fire up the grill for fresh veggies Vegetables are more versatile than many people may know. Steaming or sautéing vegetables might be among the most popular ways to cook veggies, but grillmasters know that it’s not just main dishes that taste great when cooked over an open flame. As the following recipe for “Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & The Grill” (Running Press) can attest, grilled vegetables make for simple yet satisfying side dishes.
Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto Serves 2 to 4
•1⁄2 cup olive oil •Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Green Beans •1-1⁄2 pounds slender green beans •2 teaspoons olive oil
Prepare a hot fire in your grill. Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet. For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil
Lemon Verbena Pesto •1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves) •2 garlic cloves •1⁄4 cup grated Parmesan
cheese •1⁄4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts
with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months. Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1⁄4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE WITH PREMIUM DIESEL CO-OP® Premium Diesel with Eco-Performance Technology is available in select markets throughout Western Canada. Co-op Premium Diesel fuel is Top Tier™ certified and follows in the footsteps of its predecessors by providing next-generation protection for both modern and legacy diesel equipment. The Eco-Performance package contained within CO-OP Premium Diesel works to aggressively remove deposit formations built up on critical engine components. This platform - in combination with our signature base package - works to optimize performance in High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel injection systems and prevent future deposit formations.
Power Co-op's Premium Diesel fuel has been engineered to deliver maximum power to all modern and legacy diesel engines. Recognized industry testing has shown that Co-op's Premium Diesel will improve deposit-related power loss in as little as one to three tank-fills, and can fully restore performance within 32 hours of operation.
CO-OP Premium Diesel fuel has been engineered to maximize power output, improve fuel economy and maintain fuel system cleanliness to help guard against expensive repairs and unnecessary downtime. Top Tier-certified fuels are backed by a consortium of automakers who recognize that minimum governmental standards do not go far enough to ensure protection and performance optimization. Certification involves rigorous testing to meet a standard that uses detergents to reduce deposits on fuel injectors, improve fuel stability and provide a premium level of protection against water and particulates in stored fuel.
Performance The performance components contained within Co-op’s Premium Diesel allow the fuel to deliver both maximum power output and decreased fuel consumption levels. Through combustion optimization, Co-op’s Premium Diesel fuel has been shown to provide fuel economy increases of up to five per cent. It’s also shown to provide a reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions.
Protection
The DW10B test is used to analyze a variety of parameters including specific fuel consumption. This simulated test uses a base fuel in the Dirty-up Cycle (containing 1 part per million zinc) to create injector deposits and provides an indication of how deposit formation in the injectors can impact performance. The Clean-up cycle, using Co-op Premium Diesel Fuel, shows how our unique formulation can restore specific fuel consumption, through injector clean up.

Get Ready For Spring Indicators it’s time to change air filters Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at
the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. • Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air
filter. • Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. • Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also
Have your car looking spotless in six easy steps With sunny days once again looming on the horizon, it’s without a doubt time to start thinking about having your car cleaned from top to bottom. Ready to roll? Here’s a small reminder of the main tasks you’ll have to take care of: 1. Lighten your load. Take everything you know you won’t be needing this summer out of your trunk (shovels, sandbags, etc.) and remove any winter gear (skis for example) that will make your car heavy for no reason. Making your car lighter and more aero-
dynamic will improve its fuel efficiency. 2. Vacuum. Pick up or throw away everything that’s lying around in your car, take out the carpets and vacuum the floors. This will remove all the dust and gravel that’s accumulated over the winter. 3. Clean the carpets. Rid your carpets of any salt stains with a mixture of 1 cup of vinegar and 4 cups of warm water (and a stiff brush, of course). 4. Clean the interior. Use a damp cloth along with specialized cleaning
products for each type of surface in your car (leather, fabric, etc.) to clean the dashboard, seats, doors and other accessories. 5. Make the body sparkle. Rinse the exterior of the car thoroughly, and then clean it from top to bottom (the hood, roof, trunk, doors, bumpers, wheels, rims) with products that are suitable for the task (and won’t damage the paint). Note that it’s far easier to work in cloudy weather, which prevents streaks. 6. Wash the windows. Clean your windows with the help of a specialized cleaning product or with homemade cleaner (such as the one used to clean your carpets).
cator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to deter-
notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. • Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. • Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indi-
mine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced.

Get Ready For Spring Five good reasons to visit your mechanic Between salt, potholes, snowstorms and ice, winter isn’t the best for our poor cars. If you haven’t already made an appointment for an inspection this spring, here are a few reasons why it might be a good idea to do so: 1. To enhance comfort. Difficult road conditions in winter can affect your car in different ways. For example, your alignment might be off, causing your drive to be less than pleasant. 2. To improve safety. Winter driving conditions are conducive to rust formation, especially on
and around your brakes. Take advantage of your tire change and have a detailed inspection done to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive. 3. To make your vehicle last. In addition to skewing your wheel alignment — something that can prematurely ruin your tires — driving on winter roads can damage parts of your engine and reduce the effectiveness of the additives in your motor oil. It’s no secret that regularly scheduled maintenance is the best way to maximize your vehicle’s lifespan. 4. To save money. A
springtime inspection will help prevent your car from breaking down and can correct minor problems before they become serious. This will help you save money in the long run! 5. To protect the environment. Low tire pressure, low oil levels, broken filters, defective climate control — a poorly maintained car burns more fuel, which isn’t good for the environment or your wallet! A well-maintained vehicle provides peace of mind — and peace of mind is priceless.

Spring cleaning: it’s not just for the home (NC) When tidying up your home for the warmer weather, don’t forget to look in your garage. Keeping your vehicle clean isn’t just about appearances, it should be included in your vehicle’s ongoing maintenance regimen to help protect your investment. “Cleaning and protecting your vehicle’s many surfaces will increase longevity and help ensure a higher resale value,” says Michael Bettencourt, managing editor at Autotrader.ca. Here are three tips to keep in mind: Tools of the trade. Invest in the proper cleaning solutions including sponges, brushes and a quality chamois. Clean and protect. Applying a coat of wax regularly will add a layer of protection. Close examination. A thorough cleaning may help identify small problems before they become big issues. Get Ready For Spring Car maintenance: what to inspect before the beginning of summer Excited for optimal comfort — in a safe and secure vehicle — on the road this summer? Well, you’ll have to get certain things inspected first. •Tire pressure. Extreme weather, hot or cold, is sure to put your tires to the test. In order to reduce the risk of punctures and bursting, make sure they’re always properly inflated. Pay close attention to the number written on your tires. This number represents the maximum pressure it can withstand, not the recommended pressure. Always check your owner’s manual or your tires’ information sheet located on the driver-side doorframe. Check your tire pressure — don’t forget the spare! — at least once a month and always before a long trip. • Wheel alignment. Your suspension takes a
lot of abuse throughout the winter. Always have your parallel alignment checked by a professional each spring. Your car will keep a straight course far better once your wheels have been properly aligned. And your tires will wear out much slower. • Climate control. If you want fresh air, even during a heat wave, make sure
that your climate control system is in good condition and your coolant is full. In addition to doing a poor job keeping you cool, a malfunctioning air conditioner would increase your fuel consumption. • The cabin filter. A clean filter will improve air circulation and optimize cooling in your vehicle. Is it time to change

your coolant and avoid any unpleasant surprises on the road.

The best ways to prevent car theft Drivers may not realize they are making obvious mistakes that can make their vehicles targets for potential thieves. Guarding against car theft comes down to avoiding common pitfalls, using common sense and making vehicles less attractive to thieves. • Lock doors. This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you’re only running into the house or a store for a few minutes. • Keep valuables hidden. Don’t leave purchases, cell phones, money (even loose change), expensive sunglasses, or electronics within sight in the vehicle. • Exercise caution with spare keys. Do not hide a spare key under the vehicle or in an obvious spot. Car thieves are wise to these tactics. Also, if you’ve lent a spare key to someone, ask for it back promptly. • Invest in a car alarm. Car alarms can deter thieves because they draw attention to the vehicle. Car alarms that also prevent the vehicle from being started or driven away (kill switch) can be helpful. • Use various locks. Manufacturers make steering wheel locks and brake locks that render cars undrivable unless they are removed. • Be visible when parking. Choose highly visible parking spots when out and about. These include spaces that are close to building entrances, near

Valuables in plain sight can be too attractive to pass up for potential car thieves. security cameras and in well-lit areas. Cars that are more visible are less likely to be targeted by thieves. • Don’t leave it running. Nearly half of all auto thefts occur as a result of not performing reasonable precautions - such as failure to turn off the vehicle after exiting. More than one-third of all thefts occur near the car owner’s residence. Resist the urge to “warm up” the vehicle by leaving it running with the keys in the ignition.
• Get VIN etching. Etching the VIN on windows makes it more expensive for car thieves to resell a vehicle or its parts without having to make replacements. • Buy a tracking system. In the event a car is stolen, GPS tracking devices can help police recover the vehicle more rapidly. Car theft can be a serious concern, but exercising caution can prevent vehicles from being targeted.

Get Ready For Spring Great tips for hiring a renovation contractor (NC) If your home needs a refresh, consider opting for the services of a licensed and qualified contractor for projects that are beyond your DIY skills. Use these tips to select the right one: Find a contractor you can trust and are comfortable with. Check out the renovator thoroughly. Ask lots of questions when you meet, talk with previous customers, and visit past or current projects. Don’t underestimate the importance of a comfortable personal fit so that you feel they are easy to talk with and are responsive. Find out what services the contractor offers. Many professional renovation contractors also provide design and planning services that add value to the process. A true pro will
point out opportunities for improving your design and any alternative that can save you money or improve the overall quality of your project. Make sure you have a detailed written contract. A professional contractor will always provide a complete written contract that spells out everything, including their warranty. Never settle for anything less than this. Working with a contractor who does business the right way means not having to lie awake at night worrying what the final costs will be, or if the job will even get finished. A cash deal with no contract is no deal at all. Know what to expect. Ask a lot of questions before any work begins. Who will be at your home
for each portion of the work? How will your dayto-day living be impacted?
Should you consider moving out during any portion of the construction
Three golden rules for garden walkways Walkways can serve several purposes in the garden: they let you move around freely throughout the different parts of the yard; they confer visual structure to the overall landscape; and they constitute an essential aesthetic component. Follow these three rules to make your walkways both beautiful and functional. 1. Adequate width Your main walkway (the one leading to your front door) should be at least 1.5 metres wide to allow people to cross paths without difficulty. For secondary walkways, a width between 80 centimetres and 1.2 metres is sufficient for foot traffic and wheelbarrows. 2. Harmonious materials Brick, gravel, natural stone — there are all kinds of materials in all shapes and sizes you could use for your walkway. To make the right choice, consider not only your budget but also the style of your home and your garden. Concrete, for instance, is perfect for an urban garden, while natural stone is ideal for a more rural landscape. 3. A solid base For stable, durable walkways, dig up the ground, put down a geotextile tarp to prevent weed growth, and then add a layer of sand before laying down your covering of choice. Your walkways
should ideally sit slightly below grass level to make
it easier to mow the lawn. They should also be built

on a slight incline to prevent water accumulation. Furthermore, make sure that the surface you choose isn’t too smooth to prevent falls.
The best renovation results come from good communication between you and your renovation contractor. Ask for regular updates and know how to get hold of the contractor if you have questions or concerns. Be prepared to spend time going over drawings, monitoring the project’s progress and fully discussing decisions. Don’t expect a problemfree renovation. The bigger the project, the more likely you’ll run into the unexpected, such as existing deficiencies hidden in the walls, delays in special orders or bad weather. Be flexible and understand that some things are beyond the contractor’s control. The Canadian Home Builder’s Association offers free information on how to hire a contractor the smart and safe way. Get Ready For Spring
It’s all about the mix in kitchen design for 2018 (NC) A recent study found that we spend three years on average of our life preparing meals. Not to mention time spent putting away groceries, cleaning, and just grabbing a cup of tea. It’s no wonder so many of us get the itch to change up the look of our kitchen spaces. If you’re planning an update, this year’s biggest trend is all about bringing texture, colours and patterns back to the place we spend so much time. Here are a few ways to bring
that idea to life. Two-tone cabinetry. Light-coloured upper cabinets and dark lower cabinets are a beautiful way to bring in some colour; even a neutral grey will do the trick. Ready to push it further? Consider distinct materials — like white cabinetry with beautiful walnut drawer faces — for added dimension and warmth. Appliances matter. Kitchen appliances play a huge role in setting the tone, and innovative new
finishes mean you can truly consider the design implications of your choices. GE Appliances, for example, now offer an innovative finish called Black Slate under their Café lineup. The deep charcoal matte finish is bold, contemporary and versatile enough to match nearly any décor. Plus, the matte texture hides fingerprints and virtually eliminates smudges. Fabric underfoot. No time or budget for a full kitchen reno? Bring the trend to life for under $100
How to paint metal Have a metal surface to paint? Follow these steps to get the best results. First off, get rid of any traces of rust. To do this you can use a steel brush, an emery board or a file. If unsightly welds are revealed in the process, sand them down until the metal is smooth. Certain household chemicals and products, such as phosphorus and oven cleaners, are also useful for getting rid of rust. Next, clean the metal using a damp sponge, and then dry the surface with a clean cloth. As soon as you’re done cleaning — don’t wait too long, as bare metal is quick to rust — apply a coat of primer designed for metal and compatible with the paint you’ll be using. Once the
by adding a rug to your space. A vintage rug can create warmth, both in look and feel as well as literally on cooler mornings.
Just avoid rugs that have a high pile. Kitchens are too high-traffic for anything shaggy, which will only attract dirt and be difficult
to clean. Stick with a rug that has a flat weave. Find more information on black slate appliances at geappliances.ca.

Glossy paint dries more slowly than other finishes and makes fingerprints quite noticeable. base coat is dry (refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for drying time), apply as many coats of paint as necessary. You can use a regular paintbrush, but spraying the

Get Ready For Spring Essential tips for shopping at the home improvement store (NC) As spring’s finally in the air, perhaps you’ve decided to give the living room a fresh coat of paint. Or maybe you’re suddenly inspired to refinish that old dresser that was given to you. Either way, you’ll soon find yourself wandering the aisles of a hardware store, looking for the perfect colour. As you quickly pore over the label of a product that might do the trick, a hazard symbol may catch your attention. Whether it’s paint, furniture stripper, turpentine,
insulation, or window/trim sealer, all of these common home renovation products have the potential to cause you harm if they’re not handled and stored properly. Here’s what to remember: 1. Read the label before you buy or use a household chemical product. Follow the instructions every time you use a household chemical. Look for hazard symbols on the front of the product. If you don’t already know what these symbols mean, learn them.
If you follow the instructions, you could prevent an injury. You could even
save a life. 2. Be sure to pick up safety supplies. These
Five tips to help you keep your home clean during renovations (NC) There is no better time to renovate or spruce up a room than spring. But living through it can be messy. Here are five tips to help keep your home in good shape during a reno: 1. Take down decorations. Before starting a project, remove decorations, light fixtures and extra furniture from the room and organize into bins. Removing any household goods that are not needed will help prevent them from becoming dirty or damaged during the process. 2. Keep dust at bay. Dust can build up quickly while remodelling and can settle throughout your home, even outside the space you’re updating.
For dust in the air, try an air purifier such as the Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Air Purifier and Fan that traps microscopic dust and other airborne particles. The device automatically senses indoor air quality in real time and projects clean air to every corner of the room. 3. Isolate the area. While the renovation is in full swing, try to keep it isolated from other parts of your home. Hang a plastic sheet between rooms to help contain some of the dust and debris. If you’re kicking up a lot of dust, close your floor vents to help reduce the amount of dust that travels to the rest of the house.
4. Vacuum up high, down below and in between. Despite your best precautions, it’s inevitable that debris from the renovated area will spill into other rooms. Take time to vacuum regularly to keep your other living spaces free of dirt and dust. Use a lightweight cord-free vacuum that has different attachments to reach on top of window panes, under furniture, in between upholstery and on stairs. 5. Be aware of chemicals in the air. A fresh coat of paint can transform the look and feel of a room, but it can also emit volatile organic compounds into the air. According to
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, VOCs may have short and longterm adverse health effects. The Dyson Pure Cool purifying fan has a sensor that detects and captures VOCs and emits cleaner air into the room.
include gloves, a mask and safety glasses. The label will provide more detailed information on any personal safety equipment you should use. These are essential to protect you and your family. 3. Buy only what you
need. Purchase only the amount you need for the job so there is no waste. 4. Store products safely. Once you get home, be sure to store all household chemical products in their original containers. Keep all safety information and store items safely where children cannot see or reach them. Try not to store products inside your home that may release harmful fumes or catch fire. These items include paints, solvents, gasoline, fuels and varnishes. Be sure to keep them well-sealed and to follow the instructions on the product’s label. If possible, store them in a separate building or in an area of the home that is not connected to the ventilation system.

HOLLYWOOD — Ben Affleck will star for Netflix in “Triple Frontier,” along with this year’s best-actor Oscar nominee Oscar Isaac, who is upcoming in the thriller “Operation Finale,” with Sir Ben Kingsley; “Life Itself,” with Antonio Banderas (both films open Sept. 21); and “At Eternity’s Gate,” with another of this year’s Oscar nominees, Willem Dafoe. Also starring with Affleck in “Triple Frontier” are Charlie Hunnam and Garrett Hedlund, of last year’s “Mudbound” and the upcoming “Burden,” with Forest Whitaker. Affleck was the executive producer of “Justice League,” which cost $300 million and grossed $658 million. Affleck’s ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, currently in “Love, Simon,” is returning to series television in the new Lena Dunham HBO comedy series “Camping,” with former “Doctor Who” David Tennant (2005-2010). The show is an adaptation of the hit British TV series of the same name. Tennant soon will be seen in “Mary, Queen of Scots,” with two of this year’s best-actress nominees, Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, due Nov. 2. Meanwhile, “Will & Grace” is such a ratings hit for NBC that execs have extended season two’s 13-episode order to 18 episodes and have already greenlighted a third season for 23 episodes. Tom Hardy, Marvel’s “Spider-Man” adversary “Venom,” will hit screens Oct. 5 in his own film (with Michelle Williams). He’s currently filming “Fonzo,” in which he plays the aging gangster Al Capone, with Linda Cardellini as his wife Mae, plus Kathrine Narducci
Tom Hardy (“The Sopranos”), and Matt Dillon (“Crash”) and Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”) as henchmen. Fandango reports the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War” has outsold both “Batman v Superman” and “The Black Panther” in advance sales in the first 24 hours tickets became available. The film doesn’t open until April 27. Chris Pine, currently in “A Wrinkle in Time” (slowly building at the box office), is set for the Netflix
Scottish historical action drama “Outlaw King,” due Nov. 23, with “Nocturnal Animals” Golden Globewinner Aaron TaylorJohnson. Pine also is producing and starring in the TNT limited series “One Day She’ll Darken.” Three-time Oscar nominee Edward Norton — for “Primal Fear” (1996), “American History X” (1998) and “Birdman” (2014) — currently is shooting “Motherless Brooklyn,” which he wrote and is producing, directing and starring in, with Willem Dafoe, Alec Baldwin and Bruce Willis. He’s also lent his voice to Wes Anderson’s animated film “Isle of Dogs.” Disney is launching its own streaming service in the fall of 2019. One of the first films announced is a live-action reboot of “Lady and the Tramp.” Meanwhile, Disney CEO Bob Igor, who put his retirement off until 2021, will make upward of $423 million for the additional four years. And how much will you earn in the next four years? LOL
