Special Olympics programs come to Yorkton By Sean Mott Staff Writer Children with mental and physical disabilities will have the chance to discover the joy of sports at a series of athletics camps. Special Olympics Saskatchewan (SAS) is hosting a Try-It camp at St.
Alphonsus gym for three days in May. The camps will be held on May 8, 15, and 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Try-It camp offers children and parents the opportunity to experience SAS’s Active Start and FUNdamentals programs. “It’s fun and safe,” said Caroline Krakalovich,
SAS’s program coordinator for Yorkton and District. The Active Start program is designed for children aged two to seven living with disabilities. Its a family-centered program that teaches basic motor skills such as running, throwing, jumping, and kicking.
The FUNdamentals program transitions kids from basic skills to sportsrelated movements. The program, designed for kids aged seven to 12, introduces participants to sports and competition. SAS designed these programs to socialize and educate children with disabilities, while also pro-
viding a fun atmosphere. “It helps them with their learning abilities,” Krakalovich said. The programs are debuting in Yorkton. Krakalovich said if the trial run is successful, SAS will bring the full programs to town this fall. Parents who wish to register their kids for
either program can contact Krakalovich by phone at 306-621-7890, or by email at registration@specialoyorkton.org. Krakalovich said anyone interested in volunteering for the Try-It camp can contact her phone or email addresses. “We run on volunteers,” she said.
The importance of PFDs on the water Water-related deaths aren’t preceded by a lot of warning. Drowning can happen in seconds. And fortunately, Canadians seem more aware of this fact in recent years and the statistics continue to trend in the right direction. In 2014, 428 people were reported as having drowned. This figure, according to the Chief Coroner and Medical Examiner’s office of Canada, is the lowest
reported amount of waterrelated fatalities in 25 years. Despite the statistics demonstrating a gradual reduction, drowning continues to be a serious issue, being the third leading cause of unintentional fatalities worldwide. The Canada Safety Council is marking this year’s National Summer Safety Week – May 1 to 7 – by reminding Canadians to exercise caution around water.
Water safety, in general, can be a wide-reaching topic. Many factors play into each and every incident, including the use of personal floatation devices, the type of body of water, the victim’s age, gender and more. The activity on the water can also play a part, as well as whether the person ever had any intention of even being in the water. With all these elements at play, there’s a lot to unpack. The best place
to start the discussion, then, is to focus on where the majority of drownings occur – during recreational activities. These account for 61 per cent of all drownings, with the most common activities being swimming, walking/running/playing near water and boating, including kayaks, powerboats and fishing boats. Personal floatation devices (PFDs) are essential any time you board a boat. And while Canadian
Legislation introduced to encourage investment Recently, Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison introduced Bill 125, The Saskatchewan ValueAdded Agriculture Incentive, for first reading in the Saskatchewan Legislature. The new incentive, announced as part of the 2018-19 Budget, is designed to improve investment attraction and retention outcomes in the province’s value-added agriculture sector. It offers a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit for value-added
agriculture facilities that make a significant capital investment to expand production capacity. “Robust economic growth and new investment in key sectors is crucial to Saskatchewan’s people and their communities,” Harrison said. “To accomplish this, we must continually find new ways to foster a competitive business environment in our province.” Qualifying projects include new and existing value-added agricultural facilities.
To be eligible, a project must have $10 million in new capital expenditures, demonstrate that capital expenditures were made for the purposes of increasing productive capacity, and meet the definition of value-added agriculture. Potential examples include pea protein processors, oat milling operations, malt producers, or cannabis oil processing facilities. The incentive is designed to be used in addition to other existing incentives in
Saskatchewan that a project could also qualify for. Redemption of the benefits is limited to 20 per cent in year one after the facility enters operation, 30 per cent in year two, and 50 per cent in year three. There will be a maximum carry-forward of 10 years on any remaining credit amount. The program will begin accepting applications in mid to late 2018.
law requires that you have a lifejacket on board for each person on board, the Canada Safety Council highly recommends not only that you have the PFD, but that you wear it at all times. A PFD won’t help you if it’s sitting on the seat while you’ve fallen in the water. When purchasing your PFD, make sure it’s approved either by Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard or Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Regularly check that the fastening devices work properly and are unencumbered. You should also invest
in swimming lessons. Aside from being an important life skill, knowing even the basics of swimming can make the difference in an emergency situation. Your children, too, should be taught to swim from a young age. As proud members of the Canadian Drowning Prevention Coalition, the Canada Safety Council knows that drowning remains one of the most avoidable types of fatalities. It’s through awareness, education and preemptive safety measures that you can do your part to help keep drowning at bay.

• “Spring-cleaning tip: To wash off houseplants, stick them in the shower. Cover the pot with a plastic grocery bag, run the shower and then wipe the leaves clean. It works for me.” — G.I. in North Carolina • Got pet hair in the car? No worries. Simply mist the upholstery (not wet), then use a squeegee to remove the hair. When you’re done, go out and get a removable seat protector so Fido won’t ruin your back seats! • D.D. in Missouri writes: “How to keep your crispy cereal from getting soggy: Put milk in one bowl and the cereal in another bowl. Get a spoonful of milk, then dip it in the cereal.” Or vice versa, my friend. • “When cracking open an egg, crack closer to the edge of the egg (preserving one large side). The bigger half can be set upright in the egg carton, and filled with dirt and seeds. Spray lightly with water. Place in sunlight. In about two weeks, it should be ready for planting. The eggshells also help with fertilizing.” — C.J. in Idaho • “To keep kitties (or kids) from running out your whole roll of toilet paper, squish the cardboard core so that it crimps. It will still roll but not so freely. My cats would get a hold of it and keep pulling it down, but now it is harder and they don’t do that as often, thankfully.” — V.A. in Florida • Get more juice out of a lemon by rolling it firmly on a countertop before slicing. If the lemon has been refrigerated, put it in the microwave for 10 seconds, roll, then cut. You’ll double your juice.

Spraying in cold weather conditions Cory Jacob, Crops Extension Specialist Watrous, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture With spring upon us we need to be aware of the potential for cold weather and the possibility of poor herbicide performance following a frost. Cold weather results in reduced herbicide efficacy and in certain situations also results in crop injury. Herbicides in preseed and pre-emergent burnoff applications are foliar (absorbed by leaves) and have systemic properties, which includes Group 2 and 4 herbicides and glyphosate (Group 9). Groups 2 and 4 are also used in
in-crop applications and glyphosate post-emergent in glyphosate tolerant canola. This could also apply to Group 1 herbicides and to some extent Group 10 glufosinate (Liberty) in Liberty Link canola. Foliar uptake is the only route of entry into the plant tissues for glyphosate, glufosinate, and Group 1 herbicides, while Group 2 and 4 herbicides have varying degrees of soil activity, which is product dependent. Foliar herbicides need to move through several barriers in the plant to get to the sight of action. First is the waxy layer on the leaf surface then the cell membrane and finally a second membrane to get

Shape into 18 (1-inch) meatballs. Evenly arrange meatballs in an 8-by-8-inch microwave-safe baking dish. to the chloroplast, which is the site of action for many herbicides. For a foliar herbicide with contact properties such as Liberty this is the extent of its travel in a plant. Small annual seedlings can be easily killed in this way, but larger plants can survive with their leaves being burnt off by the herbicide. For larger plants the herbicide needs to move with sugars being produced by leaves to actively growing and vital parts of the plant such as the roots and meristem (growing tip of the plant stem). Leaf material is essential for an effective herbicide application. Frosts of -4 C or more usually cause significant leaf damage to annual plants making them a poor target for a herbicide application. Winter annual weeds will tolerate a frost of -10 C or more and continue growing when conditions improve with little damage. Leaves damaged by frost will have a water-soaked appearance followed by a darkened appearance within a day or so and then necrosis (brown, dry tissues) after a few days. You will need to

ate more down time in the plant before they become inactive as they have less affinity for organic material. Also to their advantage is some soil activity, which allows for root uptake of the herbicide for several days after application. It is essential that temperature conditions are suitable for plant growth before a herbicide application, nighttime temperatures of at least 5 C and daytime highs of 10 C minimum for the two days prior to the application. Sunshine is important, especially with daytime temperatures of 10 - 15 C as sunshine means photosynthesis and sugars being produced in the leaves and moved to the meristems within the plant. Plant mechanics take a
couple of warmer days after a frost to get back to functioning normally, that’s why waiting after a frost is so important. It is also worth noting that the above temperature rules need to be followed for glyphosate and Group 2 herbicides as they are the most sensitive to being inactivated in the plant. To sum it all up, you need to have actively growing crops and weeds to get the best weed control and crop tolerance. If plants are not actively growing then you need to wait for improved conditions before you make your herbicide application. It is also encouraged to contact the herbicide manufacturer to see their temperature limits for product performance.

wait until new leaf tissue is produced by the plant after a frost to have an effective herbicide application. Cold conditions make herbicides prone to being inactivated in plants. Glyphosate as an example has an affinity for organic material and it may be attracted to the cellulose in the cell walls of a plant as an example under cool conditions when the travel time to the plant sinks is a lot longer. There are also various biological and chemical processes in the plant that can degrade Group 2 herbicides and on top of it all, there are also the weed’s metabolic and chemical processes that can inactivate the herbicide too. As a result of cold conditions, herbicides can get hung in the leaves, resulting in lower and inadequate amounts making it to the root and shoot meristems meaning reduced weed control. Group 4 herbicides (2, 4-D, MCPA, Dicamba and Fluroxypyr) are more tolerant of cold conditions, but still require actively growing plant tissue for control. Group 4s can toler-

DEAR DR. ROACH: Our local newspaper just ran the obituary of a 59-yearold woman who died from Alzheimer’s disease. I didn’t know her, but I’ve known at least two other people with that illness. One has passed away; the other is in a memory-care unit. How does Alzheimer’s cause or contribute to death? — A. ANSWER: Alzheimer’s disease is a common degenerative disease of the brain. It’s unfortunately very likely that in the
years ahead, you will know many more people diagnosed, as the risk increases with age. Its exact cause is unknown. We often think of Alzheimer’s as being a disease of memory; however, personality changes, loss of insight, impaired visual skills and language dysfunction are other cardinal findings of the disease, though any of these may show more clearly as the disease progresses. Alzheimer’s can progress in individuals at very different rates, but the mean survival after diagnosis has been reported as three to eight years. People with Alzheimer’s disease usually become debilitated due to poor nutrition and hydration, which leads to increased risk for infection, one of the most common causes of death in Alzheimer’s. I don’t mean to suggest that debility is the fault of the caregivers of people with advanced dementia. Caring for a person with
Alzheimer’s disease is a difficult and demanding task — physically, mentally and emotionally. But no matter how devoted and skillful the care is, there is no preventing the physical decline that happens as the Alzheimer’s progresses; we can only slow it down. It has been my experience that in patients with advanced dementia, the caregiver becomes the most important part of the team to get information from and give guidance on care and provide support to. The booklet on Alzheimer’s disease gives a detailed presentation of this common illness. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH:

I’m pushing 90 years old. I developed large, blue veins, similar to the varicose veins my mother had in her legs. What are these called on the hands? I read that Hollywood stars get their hand veins collapsed. I am embarrassed by the vein condition on my hands. — A.M. ANSWER: “Varix” is the Latin word for a dilated vein, so we call them varicose veins no matter where they are on the body. They run very strongly in families, but it isn’t
clear exactly what causes them. Most varicose veins do not need to be treated, but if they are complicated by bleeding, blood clots or pain, they may require treatment. Varicose veins in the legs also can be a cause of restless leg syndrome. Treatment can be effected by surgery, injecting a medication to close the vein or with a laser. Having an experienced practitioner is important. Some people do treat them for cosmetic reasons.
You don’t have to be a movie star to be concerned about your appearance. It is expensive, though. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Get Ready For Spring Keep the environment in mind when changing motor oil Having motor oil changed at a service center makes for easier recycling of old oils. Vehicle engines rely on many components to run efficiently, and motor oil is just one of the things that can affect how well engines run. Motor oil serves to reduce wear on moving parts. Oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing, and cools the engine by carrying heat away from moving parts. Each manufacturer has its own recommendations for oil-change intervals, but many advise that conventional motor oil be changed every 5,000 kms,
while synthetic oils should be changed between every 11,000 to 16,000 kms. Excessive driving, extreme heat and even cold starts can cut down on oil life. Vehicles receive many oil changes over their lifespans, and as a result motor oil can have a significant impact on the environment. When not handled responsibly or when discarded improperly, petroleum-based oils can wreak havoc on wildlife, water supplies and more. Ecoconscious motorists can keep the following tips in mind when changing their vehicles’ motor oil. • Rely on a major oil change chain or service
center. Oil change locations generally offer motor oil recycling so the oil can be reused and disposed of properly. These centers also will top off other fluids and give your vehicle a brief inspection, making
Tips to keep your ride running strong Motor vehicles are sizable investments that, for many people, trail only homes and educations in terms of the biggest expenses they will ever have. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to take every step possible to protect their investments and keep their vehicles running smoothly as long as possible. While knowledgeable mechanics can be invaluable resources, drivers can take several minor, simple steps to keep their cars running smoothly for years to come. • Perform weekly visual inspections. Few drivers take the time to look at their vehicles once those vehicles lose their new car luster. But visual inspections can help drivers find problems that, though minor, may impact their vehicles’ performance. For example, a routine examination of vehicle tires can indicate if those tires are properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can decrease fuel efficiency and affect the overall safety of a vehicle. If tires appear flat, check their pressure and inflate them to the levels listed in your owner’s manual. • Look for fluid leaks. Another telltale and easily identifiable sign that a vehicle needs some maintenance is the sight of fluids beneath the car. If you notice puddles or stains beneath where you nor-
mally park your car, your vehicle may be leaking fluids. Note the color and consistency of the fluid and then call your mechanic to determine which fluid is leaking and how to fix the problem. • Stick to manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedules. Whether your vehicle is brand new or has some tread on its tire, consult the owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations with regard to changing fluids and replacing filters. Many recent models can now be driven roughly 8,000 kms before they need an oil change, but check your owner’s manual for the guidelines established by your vehicle’s manufacturer, and adhere to that schedule religiously. If you drive an older car, recognize that the vehicle may benefit from more frequent oil changes and tuneups. In addition, read the manual for additional guidelines, such as how often to replace the air filter, headlight, turn signal and brake lamps, windshield wipers, and other vehicle parts that can wear down over time. • Look under the hood as well. While many drivers feel that the area beneath their vehicles’ hoods is best left to the professionals, you can still lift up the hood every so often to see if there are any glaring problems that
demand attention. Inspect rubber belts for signs of wear and tear, and know that such belts may need to be replaced every 80,000 miles or even more frequently depending on your driving habits. Lifting the hood is also necessary when checking fluid levels, which you should check periodically and before and after any long trips. Drivers who notice or suspect damage when performing simple vehicle maintenance should bring these concerns to the attention of their mechanics as soon as possible.
form your own oil changes, be sure to collect all of the drained oil and put it into a canister. Vehicle repair centers generally offer motor oil recycling services and serve as drop-off centers. Check with your municipal recycling center as well, as they may have a motor oil drop-off policy. • Learn about synthetic oils. Synthetic oils can be more effective at lubricating and cooling, and they can be changed less frequently than traditional
them quite convenient. • Bring oil to a recycling location. If you per-
motor oils. This helps generate less waste. • Repair leaks promptly. If you notice oil or other fluids pooling under your vehicle, take the car to a mechanic. Even small leaks can contaminate the environment. In addition, leaks put neighborhood animals and pets at risk, as animals may be drawn to the sweet taste or aroma of automotive fluids. Responsible vehicle maintenance includes taking measures to protect the environment.

Get Ready For Spring What to do when your vehicle breaks down Knowing what to do when a car breaks down can make such unfortunate situations much less stressful for drivers. Smartphones and wifi networks may make it less stressful to cope with broken down vehicles. However, wifi networks are not always accessible in remote locations, so drivers would be wise to revisit these tips for handling broken down vehicles, in advance of their next road trip. • Turn on hazard lights. Hazard lights inform other drivers that something is wrong with your vehicle, and the sight of hazard lights typically compels fellow motorists to give drivers a wide berth and facilitate their moving off of the roadway. • Attempt to get off the highway. After turning on their hazard lights, drivers who know or suspect some-
thing is wrong with their vehicles should try to get off the highway. Move into the right-hand lane as soon as possible, ultimately trying to get onto the shoulder. Avoid the left-hand shoulder if possible, as the left lane is a passing lane and motorists likely won’t be expecting vehicles in this area of the highway. • Turn the steering wheel away from the road. Broken down vehicles are unpredictable, and drivers may not have the luxury of pulling over onto flat road surfaces. Turning the steering wheel away from the road prevents it from rolling into traffic if drivers are forced to pull over on an incline. • Be especially careful before exiting the vehicle. Exiting a broken down vehicle can be very dangerous, especially when drivers are forced to pull over on busy highways.
Drivers who have pulled over into the right shoulder should wait to exit the car until there is ample

the vehicle. If the flares or triangles are buried in the trunk, drivers can ask a passenger to serve as lookout and warn them if they need to get away from the vehicle.
• Pop the hood. An opened hood is another indicator that a vehicle is broken down and can be especially valuable to drivers who do not have flares or triangles.
• Wait for help. Do not attempt to fix the vehicle on the side of the highway. Doing so leaves drivers vulnerable to oncoming motorists.

Vision greatly affects driving ability Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. Aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Drivers of any age with vision issues should take heed of their limitations and make modifications as needed. • Driving with macular degeneration. Macular degeneration affects central vision. It happens when deterioration of the central portion of the retina occurs. As MD impacts vision, driving may need to be reduced or ceased. • Color blindness impacts driving. Those with color blindness may need to use caution when identifying traffic signals or the brake lights of other vehicles. It may take practice and driving with someone who sees colors to become comfortable. • Cataracts can blur vision. Those with cataracts may have blurry vision and see halos around lights that can make driving challenging. Cataracts also may make it more difficult to see pedestrians against the landscape, especially at night. Treating cataracts can improve vision significantly.
time for them to get out and safely make it to the shoulder. If necessary, crawl across the front seat and
exit using the passengerside door. All passengers should exit the vehicle on the passenger-side if the car has been pulled onto the right shoulder. • Call for help. Only after they have safely gotten their vehicles off the highway should drivers call for help. Passengers may want to avoid calling until the car is off the road as well, as it can make for faster relief if callers wait until they know their exact location to call for help. • Set up flares or triangles behind the vehicle. If it’s safe to do so, set up flares or triangles behind

Get Ready For Spring Maintain tire balance and alignment Tire balance is checked on a machine that will measure heavy spots. Technicians will apply weights to the tires to balance any inconsistencies in weight. It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted when everything is working correctly. Wheels and suspension systems bear the weight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some wear and tear is to be expected. Many drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for worn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride. Balance Balancing tires involves equalizing the weight of the combined tire and wheel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the wheel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise weight distribution is nearly impossible without a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by driv-
ers. Unequal mass can make tires wobble, causing noticeable vibrations. Mechanics will test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine will spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting weights will
be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of weight. Lead weights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not bal-
anced will not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven wear. Alignment Tire alignment is another way to reduce wear on tires and help avoid steering and “pulling” problems. Bridgestone Tires defines tire alignment as an adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels. When tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven tread wear. Misaligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to the left or right. Drivers who notice their steering wheel is off-center or vibrating when they are driving may need to adjust their tires’ alignment. Camber, or the inward or outward angle of the tire when viewed from the front of the vehicle, will be adjusted. In addition, “toe,” or the extent to which the tires turn inward or outward when
viewed from above, will be adjusted. Caster angle also helps balance steering, stability and cornering. Caster is the angle of your steering axis when viewed from the side of your vehicle.
When tires are balanced correctly and aligned, vehicles will offer a smooth ride with little to no vibrations. Having tires serviced can maximize their performance and lifespan.

Get Ready For Spring How to check your deck for problems Homeowners should periodically inspect their decks for signs of wear and tear to ensure their safety and that of their friends and family members. Summer party season is in full swing, and that means scores of people will be relaxing with family and friends on their decks. But such gatherings are only as fun as they are safe, and responsible hosts and homeowners must inspect their decks for signs of trouble before hosting their first summer soiree. Deck inspections can be relatively simple, especially for those homeowners whose decks are newly built or recently refurbished. But even a new deck should be inspected at the start of the season to ensure the safety of all who will be spending time on the deck in the months to come. The following are a few tips to help homeowners spot trouble spots on their decks. • Check the wood. Split or decaying wood is a trouble spot that will need to be addressed. Such wood may feel spongy or break off without splintering, and those things are indicative of rot. Another sign of trouble to look for
with regard to the wood is whether or not it has any holes. Holes may be a symptom of infect infestation, which can compromise the safety of the deck over time. • Inspect the ledger board. The ledger board is a weight-bearing board that connects the deck to the house. Over time, the gap between the ledger board and the house may widen. In such instances, simply tighten the bolts. When inspecting the ledger board, examine the flashing that surrounds it. Flashing prevents the buildup of moisture that causes rot, and when there is an issue with the flashing, it’s often noticeable because mud and debris has become stuck between the flashing and the exterior wall of the home. Clear any such debris and then seal the overlapping areas with caulk. • Inspect support posts. Support posts should be firmly connected to the beams below the deck floor. Loose connections between the support posts and beams should be tightened, and replace any bolts that need replacing. • Inspect the surface. The elements can be harsh on a deck, so inspect the

surface to ensure there is no buildup of mildew, power washing any areas where mildew has started
to accumulate. Different deck materials may need certain types of cleaners, so consult with the com-
pany who built your deck or speak to a local home improvement specialist to determine which type of cleaning solution your deck needs. Once the deck has been power washed, allow it to dry before applying any additional layers of finish. • Ensure railings are not loose. Grasp and shake the deck’s railings to ensure none are loose and all provide ample support for anyone who will be enjoying the deck. Balusters are the short pillars or columns that run
perpendicular to the railings and the walking surface of the deck, and these should also be checked to ensure they are not loose. Youngsters may lean against the balusters when relaxing on the deck, so it’s imperative that none are loose. Deck inspections ideally should be performed in spring before homeowners host their first get-together, and if any problems are discovered, everyone should steer clear of the deck until those issues have been addressed.
Tips for a well-lit kitchen If you’re in the process of remodelling your kitchen, remember that proper lighting is key to creating a space that’s both pleasant and functional. Here are three bright tips to help you light up the heart of your home. 1. Start with the main light source. Install a main fixture that’s bright enough to light up the entire room effectively. Make sure that the light source you choose is strong enough to create uniform lighting and eliminate dark spots as much as possible without being too bright. 2. Target strategic spots. Make sure certain strategic locations such as work surfaces, the stovetop and the sink are especially well lit to aid common kitchen tasks and prevent injuries. Choose fixtures that create targeted lighting, such as spotlights, hanging lights or under-cabinet lighting. 3. Don’t neglect esthetics. Above all, your kitchen’s lighting should be functional, but that doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice style. Tour your local lighting stores

Get Ready For Spring How to be a painting pro Changing a room’s décor can be as simple as giving the walls a new coat of paint. At least it can be, if you know all the tricks that will result in a professional looking finish. First of all, it is crucial to prepare the room thoroughly. This step, which often takes more time than applying the paint, is essential in order to achieve an impeccable final result. Start by removing any large pieces of furniture and any objects that could be damaged by paint splashes. Plates around light switches and electrical outlets should also be removed, as well as any light shades. Next, protect the floorcovering with old sheets or a tarp. Ensure that any furniture that cannot be taken out of the room is well protected. Run a strip of masking tape or paint tape along all edges where there is a
and leave them to dry so that the primer and paint will adhere properly. Before getting started on the actual painting, it’s a good idea to get some advice from a home painting specialist. He or she will be able to tell you if you need to apply a coat of primer first and then calculate how much paint you will need for your project. This advice can save you time and money.
It’s essential to thoroughly prepare the room before painting, even though you may be tempted to skip a few steps. risk of getting paint, such as moldings, windows, and door frames. All surfaces have to be prepared before starting
to paint. Fill any holes and modify any imperfections with wall putty and sand the walls smooth. Clean the surfaces to be painted

Now the time has come to put some colour into your room. Start by carefully applying paint along all edges with a brush: that means corners, window and door ledges, and at the top of walls along the ceiling. All you’ll have to do after that is to coat the rest of the walls with a roller in an up and down, down and up motion. Leave this first coat to dry and then apply a second coat, or even a third one if necessary.
Check your garage door’s seal Even a well-insulated garage door can be a source of major heat loss. When’s the last time you had a look at your garage door’s seals? To avoid
inflating your wintertime heating bills, make sure the seals around the outside and at the bottom of your garage door are in good condition (not
broken, torn or otherwise damaged). Seals that have become too rigid should also be replaced. If, after taking a closer look, you suspect that your

Get Ready For Spring What type of toilet should you buy? Remodelling your bathroom? Putting in a powder room? Regardless of why you’re in the market for a new toilet, choosing the right model might not be as straightforward as it seems. Price is just one factor to consider; here are five others. 1. Seat shape While longer, oblong toilets are more comfortable, round ones take up less space and can be a better fit for smaller bathrooms. 2. Bowl height If it’s going to be used
by people who are very tall or have limited mobility, choose a toilet whose seat is at least 42 centimetres (16.5 inches) off the ground to make it easier to get up from. However, some people find tall toilets uncomfortable. Another option is to install a grab bar beside a standardsized model. 3. Water flow Typical toilet tanks contain six litres of water. However, more efficient models with a smaller, 4.8litre tank are also available to reduce water waste
without any noticeable impact on flush effectiveness. To maximize your water savings, choose a dual-flush toilet with both a low-flow and a regular flush option. 4. Type of toilet There are all kinds of toilets available on the market today. Here are some of the most common types: • Two-piece toilets (where the bowl and reservoir are separate) are the most affordable. • One-piece toilets are easier to clean and usually
2018 color and design trends (NC) Your home is a treasured place for living, relaxing and hosting guests. Give it new energy with these trending looks. Lovely lavenders. Move over, millennial pink — this soft shade of violet is the “it colour” this year. Lavenders and lilacs are an evolution of the popular pink, and lend an air of royal sophistication to any space while bringing out beautiful, deeper tones in surrounding accents and furniture. Statement lighting. Overhead light fixtures make for gorgeous focal points and help you set the ambiance for the room. Choose a stand-out piece that complements your décor, like an artisan chandelier or vintage sconces or pendants. Warmer metals. Golden brass is becoming a surprisingly warm and subtle substitute for stainless steel and polished nickel. Stay on-trend with brass accents and décor, or dive in with faucet fixtures in your kitchen or bathroom in this unexpected tone. Bold patterns. Big and bold is the way to go for patterns right now. If you want something more fem-
inine and seasonal, go with boho-inspired florals that look like the work of an artist’s paintbrush. Hard geometrics are a fun, modern alternative — think large circles in repetitive, balanced styles. Incorporate the trend with accent pillows or graphic wallpaper. Intelligent design. Convenience is always in fashion, so look for ele-
ments that make life easier. Window treatments with PowerView motorization from Hunter Douglas allow you to operate your shades from anywhere in the world using your mobile device. This musthave feature seamlessly integrates with other whole-home automation systems, like Google Home and Alexa.

have a more modern look. Because the bowl and reservoir form a single piece, the risk of leaks is virtually eliminated.
To ensure a matching finish, shop for your sink at the same time as your toilet.
• Wall-mounted toilets are low-maintenance, visually appealing, and create the illusion of a larger room, but they’re more expensive and harder to install than other kinds. • Toilets equipped with a bidet are becoming increasingly popular in North America. While their initial cost is high, they virtually eliminate
the need for toilet paper, which can mean considerable savings in the long run. 5. Clearance Standard clearance between a toilet and a wall is 30.48 centimetres (12 inches), but some models have different specifications. Make sure to doublecheck your measurements before you start shopping.

Q: I’ve just started watching “Orange Is the New Black,” and it got me to wondering what Jason Biggs is up to lately. Can you get me any info? — Kelly K., via email A: The “American Pie” star has teamed up with his wife, Jenny Mollen, for a new show on Lifetime called “My Partner Knows Best,” which airs Wednesday nights at 10/9c. It’s an outrageous game show where couples are
pitted against other couples in physical and mental challenges to try to win $20,000. Jason and Jenny — a fun and outrageous Hollywood couple in their own right — test each couple’s relationship knowl-
edge and physical acumen in 10 one-hour episodes that will have you laughing and playing along. I spoke with the couple recently, and they had a blast filming these shows, with Jason telling me: “For me it’s kind of a sadistic ‘Newlywed Game’ crossed with ‘Double Dare.’ I grew up with the physical-challenge aspect, so I’ll take a physical challenge any day. But I think anyone who’s ever been in a relationship, but most especially the married couples, will really relate to this because we’re asking questions that I think any long-term couple understands. We get into the very thing that relation-

an annual tradition. The record number of inaugural balls attended in one night by a president is 15, set by President Bill Clinton in 1997. • On May 11, 1947, the B.F. Goodrich Company announces it has developed a tubeless tire, a technological innovation that would make automobiles safer and more efficient. In 1952, Goodrich won pat-
ents, and the tubeless tire quickly became standard on most new automobiles. • On May 13, 1958, antiAmerican demonstrators pelt then-Vice President Richard Nixon’s limousine with rocks in Caracas, Venezuela. She revealed: “I thought they would be too conservative for this show, that it wasn’t going to work. But they ended up being some of our favorite guests. They were so fun, and they were willing to go for it. They revealed so much of themselves. They just really stand out for me.” Q: I know you’ve been asked a lot about reboots lately, so can you find out for me if the “Mad About You” rumors are true? — Cal R., Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania A: Both Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser have signed on with Sony Pictures Television to reprise their roles of Jamie and Paul Buchman, with co-creator Danny Jacobson on board as well. The original run aired from 1992-99, and centered on the lives of newlyweds living in New York City: Paul, a documentary filmmaker, and Jamie, a public relations specialist. In season six, they welcomed a daughter, Mabel, and in the series finale, we got a glimpse of the future where Mabel was all grown up (and played by Janeane Garafalo), and Paul and Jamie had briefly separated — but luck-
ily the couple did get back together. Q: Do you know when “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” will be back? — Nina F., via email A: The hilarious Netflix original comedy starring Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess and Jane Krakowski will drop Wednesday, May 30 — however, this time, we’ll get only half a season at a time, with six episodes premiering first, and the other six coming later in 2018. • On May 12, 1963, Bob Dylan walks out on “The Ed Sullivan Show” after network censors rejected the song he planned to perform, “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues.” Sullivan had heard the song days before and had no concerns. • On May 9, 1971, the last original episode of the sitcom “The Honeymooners,” starring Jackie Gleason,
airs. Although a perennial rerun favorite in syndication, only 39 episodes actually aired. • On May 8, 1984, the Soviet Union announces that it will boycott the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. It was a response to the United States’ decision to boycott the 1980 Moscow games. Thirteen other communist nations also refused to compete.
• On May 10, 1990, the government of the People’s Republic of China announces the release of 211 people arrested during the massive protests held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in June 1989. POWER AND PERFORMANCE WITH PREMIUM DIESEL CO-OP® Premium Diesel with Eco-Performance Technology is available in select markets throughout Western Canada. Co-op Premium Diesel fuel is Top Tier™ certified and follows in the footsteps of its predecessors by providing next-generation protection for both modern and legacy diesel equipment. The Eco-Performance package contained within CO-OP Premium Diesel works to aggressively remove deposit formations built up on critical engine components. This platform - in combination with our signature base package - works to optimize performance in High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel injection systems and prevent future deposit formations.
Power Co-op's Premium Diesel fuel has been engineered to deliver maximum power to all modern and legacy diesel engines. Recognized industry testing has shown that Co-op's Premium Diesel will improve deposit-related power loss in as little as one to three tank-fills, and can fully restore performance within 32 hours of operation.
CO-OP Premium Diesel fuel has been engineered to maximize power output, improve fuel economy and maintain fuel system cleanliness to help guard against expensive repairs and unnecessary downtime. Top Tier-certified fuels are backed by a consortium of automakers who recognize that minimum governmental standards do not go far enough to ensure protection and performance optimization. Certification involves rigorous testing to meet a standard that uses detergents to reduce deposits on fuel injectors, improve fuel stability and provide a premium level of protection against water and particulates in stored fuel.
Performance The performance components contained within Co-op’s Premium Diesel allow the fuel to deliver both maximum power output and decreased fuel consumption levels. Through combustion optimization, Co-op’s Premium Diesel fuel has been shown to provide fuel economy increases of up to five per cent. It’s also shown to provide a reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions.
Protection
The DW10B test is used to analyze a variety of parameters including specific fuel consumption. This simulated test uses a base fuel in the Dirty-up Cycle (containing 1 part per million zinc) to create injector deposits and provides an indication of how deposit formation in the injectors can impact performance. The Clean-up cycle, using Co-op Premium Diesel Fuel, shows how our unique formulation can restore specific fuel consumption, through injector clean up.

Co-op’s Premium Diesel fuel has been formulated to provide long-term protection to your equipment’s fuel injection system and resist the formation of internal diesel injector deposits.
