DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many articles about high blood pressure, but I want to know about low blood pressure. What is normal? What is low, and what is dangerously low? I have a heart issue for which I take medication. I want to know if my blood pressure is too low. — Anon. ANSWER: Among young

BOURBON-MARINATED STEAK A sweetly spiced marinade adds flavor and tenderness to classic grilled flank steak. •1/2 cup packed brown sugar •1/2 cup bourbon whiskey •1/3 cup soy sauce •2 tablespoons lemon juice •1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce •1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper •1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce •2 flank steaks (about 1-1/2 pounds each), well trimmed* Prepare marinade: In jumbo self-sealing plastic bag (2 gallons), mix 1 cup water with all ingredients

SWEET POTATO SIDE It’s grilling season, and if you’re looking for a new side dish to go with pork or ham, look no further. •1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, packed in fruit juice, undrained •1/2 cup fat-free mayonnaise •1/4 cup no-fat sour cream

adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults. For people with healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting. In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications

except steaks. Add steaks, turning to coat. Seal bag, pressing out excess air. Place bag in shallow glass baking dish and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight, turning bag occasionally. Remove steaks from marinade. Discard marinade. Place steaks on grill over medium heat, and cook 15 to 20 minutes for medium-rare or until of desired doneness, turning once. (Or, preheat broiler and place steaks on rack in broiling pan. Broil steaks at closest position to source of heat 15 to 20 minutes for medium-rare.) Transfer steaks to warm large platter, let stand 10 minutes for easier slicing. To serve, cut into thin slices. Makes 12 servings. •Or, use 2 beef top •3 cups diced cooked sweet potatoes •1 cup chopped celery •1/4 cup chopped walnuts •1/2 cup seedless raisins In a large bowl, combine undrained pineapple, mayonnaise and sour cream. Add sweet potatoes, celery, walnuts and raisins. Mix gently to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Gently stir again just before serving. Makes 8 (1/2 cup) servings. TIP: To plump up raisins without “cooking,” place in a glass measur-

used for CHF reduce blood pressure, which can even limit the amount of medication that can be used. In people with blockages in their arteries, too low a blood pressure can cause inadequate blood flow to parts of the heart and cause angina symptoms. The blood pressure is dangerously low when a disease process is causing the low blood pressure. In extreme cases, low blood pressure is one of the most dangerous signs of shock. But in general, for healthy people, low blood pressures are not worrisome. DR. ROACH WRITES: I have received more letters about hearing loss than I would have believed pos-

round steaks, about 1-1/2 inches thick (about 1-1/2 pounds each). Follow recipe for flank steaks, but grill or broil 25 to 30 minutes for medium-rare or until of desired doneness. • Each serving: About 215 calories, 9g total fat (4g saturated), 47mg cholesterol, 235mg sodium, 4g carbohydrate, 27g protein. STEAK SECRETS Steaks that are at least 3/4-inch to 1-inch thick won’t dry out easily during grilling. Trim off excess fat and slash the fat edges at 1-inch intervals to prevent curling. Turn your steak with tongs once, halfway through cooking (don’t use a fork — it will pierce the meat and let the natural juices escape). Many facing cup and microwave on HIGH for 20 seconds. • Each serving equals: 142 calories, 3g fat, 3g protein, 28g carbs, 182mg sodium, 40mg calcium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Starch/Carb, 1 Fruit, 1/2 Fat; Carb Choices: 2.

sible. Most of the advice was consistent, so let me review what both professionals and people who have been through the process of getting hearing aids have advised. First, have realistic expectations about what a hearing aid can do. It does not make your hearing what it was 50 years ago. Loud noises can be painfully overamplified. Second, find someone who really knows what he or she is doing. The people whose technicians spent a lot of time teaching, discussing the different options and adjusting them after purchase were the most satisfied. (The adjustment period tors can influence cooking time — including the weather (especially wind) when you’re using charcoal — so test for doneness by cutting into the thickest part of the steak and checking its color. Let steak stand for a few minutes before serving. This allows the meat juices, which have been driven to the center of the meat by the heat, to return to the surface, resulting in juicier meat. For thousands of tripletested recipes, visit our Web site at www.goodhousekeeping.com/recipes/.

can take weeks.) A referral from a satisfied friend could be a good place to start. Several professionals recommended that your audiologist be certified by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association. Third, be prepared to spend some money. Good hearing aids are expensive. More expensive doesn’t always mean better, but most of my readers felt that the money they spent on hearing aids was well worth it. I’m sure there are some great ones, and some not as great. Many veterans wrote me to tell me about their (mostly) good experiences at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Fourth, try many models. Some people prefer in-the-ear, some over-theear. Because it takes a long time to get used to them, you need to wear them pretty much constantly. Both your ears and your brain need time to adjust, so be patient.

Finally, several people and one chapter president wrote to me about the Hearing Loss Association of America (www.hearingloss.org) and the benefit they gained from visiting their local chapter and sharing their experiences. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. New tax break available for seniors A new tax deferral program has been created to help Saskatchewan seniors. The Seniors Education Property Tax Deferral Program, which opened in April, will give Saskatchewan seniors with household incomes under $70,000 the option to defer the education portion of the property taxes on their home through a repayable loan. “This provide

program will low-to-moder-

ate-income seniors with greater financial flexibility, and help them stay in their homes longer,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Paul Merriman said. “We are following through on an election promise and supporting our government’s priorities and strategies, including The Poverty Reduction Strategy.” Seniors are eligible for the program if they: •are 65 years of age or

older; •own and live in their home as their main residence in Saskatchewan; •have total household income below $70,000; and •maintain a minimum of 25 per cent equity in their home. Seniors can apply at any point in the year to defer their education property taxes. Approved applicants will be enrolled in the program for 10 years with the option to opt out at any point. At the end of the 10-year enrollment

period, seniors who would like to continue to defer future education property taxes can reapply to the program. Seniors remain responsible for the direct and full payment of their property taxes. Repayment of the loans must occur when the program clients sell, transfer, or no longer reside in their homes or when they no longer meet the conditions of the loan. Clients may also repay the loan at any time without penalty. This program is only

Farmers catch up on seeding average Thanks to good seeding conditions, Saskatchewan producers made up the time lost in previous weeks. Thirty-five per cent of the crop is now in the ground, just ahead of the five-year (2013-2017) seeding average of 32 per cent for this time of year. Crops are starting to emerge. Seeding is furthest advanced in the southeast, where 49 per cent of the crop is in the ground. Forty-five per cent is seeded in the southwest, 28 per cent in the northeast, 26 per cent in the west–central region and 24 per cent

in the east-central and northwestern regions. Rain showers were reported throughout the province, particularly in the southwestern and west-central regions. The Gull Lake area received 18 mm of rain, the most in the province. There have been multiple reports of grass and stubble fires due to the dry conditions and rain would be welcomed to help alleviate dry field conditions and concerns. Thirty-three per cent of the spring wheat, 26 per cent of the canola, 57 per cent of the lentils and 63 per

Stuttering affects more than 70 million people worldwide. According to the Stuttering Foundation, four times as many men than women will experience stuttering in their lifetimes. Despite its prevalence, stuttering often elicits embarrassment among its sufferers, who may be hesitant to speak in public and/or shy away from social relationships. Understanding the causes of stuttering and recognizing that there are therapies available to treat stuttering can help people live fuller lives. Researchers continue to investigate and study stuttering, which is sometimes referred to as stammering. The Mayo Clinic says possible causes of develop-

mental stuttering include abnormalities in speech motor control or damage to areas of the brain that control speech. Genetics also plays a role, as stuttering tends to run in families. Stuttering also may be linked to inherited genetic abnormalities. Physical trauma may lead to stuttering, and problems with fluency can occur when speakers become especially nervous or feel pressured to perform. Therapeutic treatments can help people overcome their stuttering, but such treatments are not an overnight fix. Still, many people make excellent fluency strides and can benefit from the help of a stuttering expert.

Did you know?

cent of the field peas have been seeded to date. Little rain, warm temperatures and strong and warm winds have caused topsoil moisture conditions to decline. Hay and pasture growth is slow due to little rainfall. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 57 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and eight per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 40 per cent adequate, 43 per cent short and 17 per cent very short. Producers are busy seeding, controlling weeds and moving cattle. SaskPower reports 46 cases of farm machinery contacting electrical equipment in the last

week, bringing the total for May to 73. Most farm-related incidents happen during seeding. SaskPower reminds producers to be aware of their surroundings at all times and to plan ahead. More safety information is available at www.saskpower.com/ safety. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at http://www.saskatchewan. ca/crop-report. • “Here’s an awesome way to clean silver. Take an aluminum foil pan — the disposable kind — and line it with a piece of aluminum foil; sprinkle

in some salt — I use sea salt, but any kind will do — then add an equal amount of baking soda, and fill the container with boiling water. Put your silver, including jewelry, into the mix‚ it cleans instantly! Of course, you’ll have to turn the larger pieces, so be careful not to burn yourself.” — L.N. in B.C., Canada • “With summer storms and hurricane season right

around the corner, power outages are a very real possibility. Whenever I have any extra room in my freezer, I fill some containers with water and freeze them. If the power were to go out, it’ll keep my frozen foods good longer, or become water to drink if needed. And it’s no waste, since if I need the room, I can just take one out.” —

W.J. in Texas • Do you remember the last time you went on vacation and came home the night before returning to work or school, and the house was trashed and there was no food or anything? Do yourself a favor here: Clean house before you leave; schedule a grocery delivery of essentials for your return, if possible;

and schedule a recovery day at home before returning to work. • Bread can be frozen and reheated in the oven after a quick spritz of water. Sliced bread can be defrosted on the counter as needed. There’s really no excuse to have bread go bad. • For furniture items that require their own

By Cindy Elavsky Q: There was a show I got into that starred Adam Brody and Martin Freeman, and I can’t find it anywhere. Is it still on? And can you refresh my memory of what it’s called and where I can see it? — Paul T., via Facebook A: You are referring to “StartUp,” a drama series on Crackle (which is a free online streaming network, for those unfamiliar with it). It follows “the emergence of GenCoin, a brilliant yet controversial tech idea centered on digital currency — an idea that gets incubated on the wrong side of the tracks by three strangers who don’t necessarily fit the mold of ‘tech entrepreneurs.’” The show has been renewed for a 10-episode third season, which should premiere this September. Eric Berger, GM of Crackle and chief digital officer at Sony Pictures Television Networks, said in a statement: “Thanks to (series creator) Ben Ketai for his vision and to our stellar ensemble cast. ... We are excited to continue the story in season three, and expect that Ben and company will take us on another entertaining and wild ride.” Q: Can you tell me what Jeremy Sisto is up to? I loved him way back when in “Clueless” and have been following his career since. The latest show I can remember seeing him in regularly is “Law and Order.” Does he have another show on the horizon? — Janet Y., via email A: Jeremy has a new show premiering this fall on CBS called “F.B.I.,” which explores the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The series comes from Dick Wolf, the man behind “Law and Order.” “F.B.I” was immediately picked up for a full season (I mean, who can blame CBS? Mr. Wolf has the procedural magic touch).

Jeremy Sisto Missy Peregrym and Zeeko Zaki also star. Q: I am finally caught up on FX’s dark comedy “You’re the Worst.” Will it be back for another season? — Ginger F., Tulsa, Oklahoma A: “You’re the Worst” has been renewed for a fifth and final season, which should premiere this fall. Hopefully we’ll find out if Gretchen and Jimmy can finally make it work, or if they’ll sabotage their happiness, again, and each end up alone. With this comedy-drama, it’s hard to know which way the winds will blow, but I’m rooting for the dysfunctional couple. Q: Can you tell me what John Walsh has been doing? I used to religiously watch “America’s Most Wanted,” and I wondered if he was still out there, helping to catch criminals. — Jack W., via email A: You can catch John next on Investigation Discovery in “In Pursuit With John Walsh.” Slated to premiere in the first quarter of 2019, this realtime investigation series showcases time-sensitive, unsolved cases in desperate need of attention, mobilizing ID’s audience to actively engage in the pursuit of justice. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Black Panther” (PG13) — Chadwick Boseman is T’Challa, a young man come home to take his place as king of a hidden, technologically rich and mesmerizing nation, only to face challenges to both the crown and the safety of his country — and the world beyond. This may be the best film of the past year, with the best soundtrack in a good long while, thanks to the genius of musician Kendrick Lamar. Add a rich tapestry of location, exceptional character development and a ripe, charismatic villain in Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger, this next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have you chanting “Wakanda Forever!” “Submergence” (NR) — Based on the novel of the same name, “Submergence” explores the depths of light and dark in a dreamy and philosophical love story. James McAvoy plays James Moore, an SAS operative who poses as a water expert in order to surveil Somali terrorists. Alicia Vikander is Danielle Flanders, an oceanic scientist set to explore the bottom of the sea. The two meet at a swanky resort and fall swiftly in love, but their time together is cut short by the immediacy of their missions. Moore is captured by the Somalis and held in a dark, dank jail cell. Flanders is literally submerged under the weight of the ocean above her. Both trapped, they reminisce and ponder deep thoughts. “10x10” (R) — Luke Evans and Kelly Reilly star in a tight psychological thriller, a game of cat and mouse that begins when Lewis (Evans) abducts the seemingly straight-laced Cathy (Reilly) from an Atlanta parking lot. He brings her home and imprisons her in a 10 by 10 cell made with padded concrete walls, from which discovery or escape are impossible. He doesn’t want sex and he doesn’t want money. His demand? A story, and one that only Cathy can tell. It’s no spoiler that Cathy is not what she seems, and neither, too, is Lewis. The pace of the movie is well-

17.61/kg

Chadwick Boseman in “Black Panther” done by first-time feature director Suzi Ewing, but it may have pushed past the point of plot twist tolerance by the end. “Samson” (PG-13) — A warrior chosen by God to be his “hand of living vengeance,” Samson (Taylor James) is super-strong and basically the be-all and end-all of bad dudes (but, you know, a good guy, a leader of his people). When King Balek (Billy Zane, oh how the mighty have fallen) hears the stories, he’s totally jealous and sends his sneaky monster of a son Rallah (Jackson Rathbone) out to quell the threat. Underhanded as ever, Rallah enlists a smarmy seductress, Delilah (Caitlin Leahy), to cut off (the hair of) this threat to the kingdom. You’ve heard this tale in Sunday school, and this movie could appeal to some who have fond memories of that time. But it’s not the epic legend it could be. Pass. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toy poodle “Scraps” loves to run around in our big backyard. He never tries to get past the fence, so I usually leave him out while I clean house or handle other tasks. A few days ago, however, as I was calling Scraps inside, my next-door neighbor told me off for leaving him out there for hours. I don’t see anything wrong with him being out in our backyard. What’s your take? — Miffed in Ocala, Florida DEAR MIFFED: Your neighbor may simply have been worried for Scraps’ welfare. If the weather was hot, did you put out water for him to drink while he was outside? Could the neighbor see it? You also should consider dangers we don’t think about when we’re outside. Scraps is a toy poodle, so is small and light. He may not be interested in escaping under the fence, but he may look kind of tasty to a bird of prey. In some suburban neighborhoods, coyotes roam through backyards, and Scraps wouldn’t stand a chance against such a predator. At the very least, make

HOLLYWOOD — Ryan Gosling has chosen his next film. While “La La Land” (2016) grossed $446 million, his followup films didn’t do so well. “Song to Song” (2017), with Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman and Rooney Mara, tanked; and “Blade Runner 2049” made only $260 million (on Harrison Ford’s draw), barely covering expenses. Gosling next will play astronaut Neil Armstrong from 1961 to his 1969 mission to land on the moon. “First Man” co-stars Kyle Chandler and opens Oct. 12. When “Murphy

“Bride Wars” (2009), and co-starred in the ABC series “Boston Legal” (2005-2008). She starred with Reese Witherspoon in “Home Again” (2017) and is top billed in “Book Club,” with Oscar winners Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton and Mary Steenburgen, opening May 18. Faith Ford (Corky Sherwood), now 53, made six films, most notably “The Pacifier” (2005), with Vin Diesel and Lauren Graham; and the TV series “Hope & Faith” (2003-2006), with Kelly Ripa. Grant Shaud (Miles Silverberg), now 57, made six films, including “The Crow: Salvation” (2000), with Kristen Dunst and “Ugly Betty’s” Eric Mabius. Joe Regalbuto (Frank

Fontana), now 68, did a bunch of episodic TV, including five episodes of “Side Order of Life” (2007). Charles Kimbrough (Jim Dial), now 81, also did a lot of episodic TV, plus “The Wedding Planner” (2001), with Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. It’ll be interesting to see how they explain the cast’s advanced age and the missing Eldin Bernecky (Robert Pastorelli, who died of a morphine overdose in 2004) and bartender Phil (Pat Corley, who died in 2006 from heart failure). Hopefully, “Murphy Brown” isn’t old news. Because Debbie Reynolds’ movie memorabilia auction was such a success (earning an estimated $20

man named John Schrank pulled out a gun and shot toward Roosevelt, who staggered but did not fall. There was no blood evident, and Roosevelt, who was campaigning for a second term, insisted on delivering his speech. When he pulled from a coat pocket the 100 pages on which his speech was written, he saw a bullet hole through the sheets of paper. Still determined to carry on, he gave his speech before going to the hospital, where it was discovered that the bullet had penetrated four inches into his body. After the perpetrator was arrested, it became evident that Schrank was insane; he claimed that President

William McKinley had revealed to him in a dream that Roosevelt was responsible for McKinley’s assassination. Schrank spent the next 32 years in an insane asylum. • If you see a group of flamingoes together in one place, it might be handy to know that the appropriate collective noun is a “flamboyance.” • The instruments used by professional flute players are usually made from precious metals — either sterling silver, 14-carat gold or platinum. Skipping through winding trails, spotting leaping frogs along creek beds and counting deer as they pass by the front porch are a few of the adventures in store for 6-yearold Georgia and her older sister, Eliza, when they visit their grandparents’ home nestled deep in the Wisconsin woods. What a delight for city kids from St. Louis! Like a page out of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic, “Little House in the Big Woods” (set in Wisconsin), many of the girls’ experiences mirror the lifestyle and pioneer spirit of the late 1800s. For Georgia, walking on a dead-end road to the rhubarb patch in May to harvest giant leafy stalks and, together with grandmother Nancy, prepare rhubarb sauce to ladle over breakfast pancakes, and bake rhubarb custard pie for evening dessert is a delight. “Georgia is the baker and loves to cook,” says Nancy, a recently retired school administrator. “She washes and dices the stalks, cracks eggs and measures carefully. It’s fun!” she adds. “Cooking together is a way to share a common interest.” Like the first robin, the greening grass and the budding trees, add “first rhubarb pie” to your family’s “signs of spring” list. Whether you harvest rhubarb from your garden, or find stalks in your grocery produce section, give Nancy’s winning rhubarb custard pie recipe a try with your kids while rhu-

Pike seem to be easier to catch here than Reservations are accepted for campsites. walleye, although the same could be argued for many lakes. Pike are not fussy, and will often attack anything that moves. Walleye, on the other hand, sometimes require more planning to hook. Some of the best days for fishing can be some of the least favourable conditions for anglers. Walleye will tend to be more active at night, and on cloudy, windy days. They prefer these types of conditions because wave action not only increases the oxygen in the water, but also allows them to be more concealed from their predators. Prime walleye fishing is at night, and in early spring. They can still be caught on a summer day, however, and sometimes they will take your bait if they are annoyed. Walleye will generally chase their prey, unlike pike, who will wait in the weeds (or other cover) for their prey to come to them. Banner Ad V2.qxp_Fishing Ad Banner 5/10/16 4:45 PM Page 1

SPRING SALAD BOWL For the Salad Dressing: •3 tablespoons fresh

ingredients. Makes about 1/3 cup.

• Annuals • Perennials • Trees • Shrubs • Hanging Baskets and more

A bowl filled with a cold salad with flavorful ingredients are a “hot” menu item this year! There are several ways to incorporate the numerous varieties of spring vegetables, superfoods, grains and cheeses into a “super” salad by using simple preparation methods. Here are a few tips to make a salad that will appeal to even the pickiest eater: Make it colorful! Skip the iceberg and opt for spinach, kale or another dark leafy green. Dark leafy greens supply a tremendous amount of nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, iron, calcium and fiber. Add color with some carrots, red bell peppers, tomatoes, blanched asparagus, beets or any other vegetable, and you get additional nutrients critical for maintaining eyesight, bone health and digestive health. Salad isn’t just for vegetables anymore! Try adding in cooked grains such as brown rice, quinoa and barley to add nutritious texture, and fruits like apples, citrus segments, grapes, strawberries or blueberries to your plate of colorful vegetables. Like many vegetables, fruits contain antioxidants that

can help protect against certain forms of cancer and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Try to limit or avoid dried fruits, such as dried cranberries or blueberries. These often have added sugars that can up the calorie content of your salad. Add a healthy crunch! A few toasted walnuts or almonds, spicy baked garbanzo beans and pickled vegetables are a great addition to any salad. Add some protein! Protein takes longer to digest, so it keeps us full longer. Protein also is needed for healthy muscles. Eggs, lean meat, beans and cheese (in limited quantities) are easy ways to add protein. Find a healthier dressing that works for you! There now are quite a variety of light dressings and vinaigrettes to choose from. Vinegar-based dressings typically have less fat and calories than creamy dressings. Oil and vinegar is a healthy choice in limited amounts — the healthy fat from the oil helps your body to absorb some of the vitamins from the salad. Creating a healthy salad can be a simple way to satisfy recommendations for fruit and vegetable intake. It’s also a wonderful way to use leftover cooked meats, vegetables and grains. Don’t be afraid to use your grocery deli section selections for sliced vegetables and roasted deli meats to make a delicious meal in record time.

Italian flatbread boasts flavor In Italy, the word “schiacciata” means “flattened.” A puffy flatbread made with grapes and sugar, “Sticky Grape Schiacciata (Schiacciat con l’uva)” is typically only available in bakeries. manufacturer’s instructions. Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture, egg yolks, olive oil, and salt. Mix until the dough comes together. Tip out onto a lightly floured work surface. Wash and dry your hands. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. It should be quite soft, but if it’s too soft to handle, add more flour. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel, and let rise until doubled in size — about 1 hour. To make the walnut butter, cream the butter and sugar together, then stir in the lemon peel and walnuts. Keep at room temperature. Uncover the dough, punch out the air, then

shape into a ball. Roll or pull the dough into a rectangle to line the prepared jelly roll pan. Spread the walnut butter over the schiacciata crust, add the grapes, and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour until puffy and doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Uncover the dough and bake for 15 minutes. Turn the oven down to 350 F and bake for 20 minutes more or until risen and golden. Let cool slightly before turning out. To make the Vin Santo cream, beat the cream, confectioners’ sugar and Vin Santo together in a bowl until the mixture forms soft peaks. Cut the focaccia into wedges and serve with the Vin Santo cream.
