BOURBON-MARINATED STEAK A sweetly spiced marinade adds flavor and tenderness to classic grilled flank steak.

•1/2 cup packed brown sugar •1/2 cup bourbon whiskey •1/3 cup soy sauce •2 tablespoons lemon juice •1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce •1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper •1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce •2 flank steaks (about 1-1/2 pounds each), well trimmed* Prepare marinade: In jumbo self-sealing plastic bag (2 gallons), mix 1 cup water with all ingredients

adults, only 5 percent of men will have a blood pressure below 110/60 or so, and for young women, it’s 90/46. Blood pressure tends to go up with age, so low blood pressure numbers are higher for older adults.

For people with healthy hearts, the only time we worry about low blood pressure is if there are symptoms, and the most common symptoms are lightheadedness and fainting.

In people with congestive heart failure, low blood pressure usually is not concerning in itself, but because it might indicate that the heart is getting weaker. However, many of the medications

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Gently stir again just before serving. Makes 8 (1/2 cup) servings.

sible. Most of the advice was consistent, so let me review what both professionals and people who have been through the process of getting hearing aids have advised.

First, have realistic expectations about what a hearing aid can do. It does not make your hearing what it was 50 years ago.

Loud noises can be painfully overamplified.

Second, find someone who really knows what he or she is doing. The people whose technicians spent a lot of time teaching, discussing the different options and adjusting them after purchase were the most satisfied.

(The adjustment period tors can influence cooking time — including the weather (especially wind) when you’re using charcoal — so test for doneness by cutting into the thickest part of the steak and checking its color.

Both your ears and your brain need time to adjust, so be patient.

New tax break available for seniors A new tax deferral program has been created to help Saskatchewan seniors.

The Seniors Education Property Tax Deferral Program, which opened in April, will give Saskatchewan seniors with household incomes under $70,000 the option to defer the education portion of the property taxes on their home through a repayable loan.

“This provide

program will low-to-moder-

ate-income seniors with greater financial flexibility, and help them stay in their homes longer,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Paul Merriman said. “We are following through on an election promise and supporting our government’s priorities and strategies, including The Poverty Reduction Strategy.”

Seniors are eligible for the program if they: •are 65 years of age or

older; •own and live in their home as their main residence in Saskatchewan; •have total household income below $70,000; and •maintain a minimum of 25 per cent equity in their home.

Seniors can apply at any point in the year to defer their education property taxes. Approved applicants will be enrolled in the program for 10 years with the option to opt out at any point. At the end of the 10-year enrollment

period, seniors who would like to continue to defer future education property taxes can reapply to the program. Seniors remain responsible for the direct and full payment of their property taxes.

Repayment of the loans must occur when the program clients sell, transfer, or no longer reside in their homes or when they no longer meet the conditions of the loan. Clients may also repay the loan at any time without penalty.

Farmers catch up on seeding average Thanks to good seeding conditions, Saskatchewan producers made up the time lost in previous weeks. Thirty-five per cent of the crop is now in the ground, just ahead of the five-year (2013-2017) seeding average of 32 per cent for this time of year. Crops are starting to emerge.

Seeding is furthest advanced in the southeast, where 49 per cent of the crop is in the ground.

Forty-five per cent is seeded in the southwest, 28 per cent in the northeast, 26 per cent in the west–central region and 24 per cent

in the east-central and northwestern regions.

Stuttering affects more than 70 million people worldwide. According to the Stuttering Foundation, four times as many men than women will experience stuttering in their lifetimes. Despite its prevalence, stuttering often elicits embarrassment among its sufferers, who may be hesitant to speak in public and/or shy away from social relationships.

Understanding the causes of stuttering and recognizing that there are therapies available to treat stuttering can help people live fuller lives.

Researchers continue to investigate and study stuttering, which is sometimes referred to as stammering.

The Mayo Clinic says possible causes of develop-

mental stuttering include abnormalities in speech motor control or damage to areas of the brain that control speech. Genetics also plays a role, as stuttering tends to run in families.

Stuttering also may be linked to inherited genetic abnormalities. Physical trauma may lead to stuttering, and problems with fluency can occur when speakers become especially nervous or feel pressured to perform.

Therapeutic treatments can help people overcome their stuttering, but such treatments are not an overnight fix. Still, many people make excellent fluency strides and can benefit from the help of a stuttering expert.

James McAvoy plays James Moore, an SAS operative who poses as a water expert in order to surveil Somali terrorists. Alicia Vikander is Danielle Flanders, an oceanic scientist set to explore the bottom of the sea. The two meet at a swanky resort and fall swiftly in love, but their time together is cut short by the immediacy of their missions. Moore is captured by the Somalis and held in a dark, dank jail cell. Flanders is literally submerged under the weight of the ocean above her. Both trapped, they reminisce and ponder deep thoughts.

“10x10” (R) — Luke Evans and Kelly Reilly star in a tight psychological thriller, a game of cat and mouse that begins when Lewis (Evans) abducts the seemingly straight-laced Cathy (Reilly) from an Atlanta parking lot. He brings her home and imprisons her in a 10 by 10 cell made with padded concrete walls, from which discovery or escape are impossible. He doesn’t want sex and he doesn’t want money. His demand? A story, and one that only Cathy can tell.

When King Balek (Billy Zane, oh how the mighty have fallen) hears the stories, he’s totally jealous and sends his sneaky monster of a son Rallah (Jackson Rathbone) out to quell the threat. Underhanded as ever, Rallah enlists a smarmy seductress, Delilah (Caitlin Leahy), to cut off (the hair of) this threat to the kingdom.

You’ve heard this tale in Sunday school, and this movie could appeal to some who have fond memories of that time. But it’s not the epic legend it could be. Pass.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toy poodle “Scraps” loves to run around in our big backyard. He never tries to get past the fence, so I usually leave him out while I clean house or handle other tasks. Skipping through winding trails, spotting leaping frogs along creek beds and counting deer as they pass by the front porch are a few of the adventures in store for 6-yearold Georgia and her older sister, Eliza, when they visit their grandparents’ home nestled deep in the Wisconsin woods. For Georgia, walking on a dead-end road to the rhubarb patch in May to harvest giant leafy stalks and, together with grandmother Nancy, prepare rhubarb sauce to ladle over breakfast pancakes, and bake rhubarb custard pie for evening dessert is a delight.

“Georgia is the baker and loves to cook,” says Nancy, a recently retired school administrator.

“She washes and dices the stalks, cracks eggs and measures carefully. It’s fun!” she adds. “Cooking together is a way to share a common interest.”

FRESH RHUBARB CUSTARD PIE •Pastry for 9-inch single-crust pie •1-1/3 cups sugar (add more according to taste) •1/4 cup all-purpose flour •1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg •Dash of salt •3 eggs •4 cups fresh rhubarb, diced •2 tablespoons firm butter Preheat oven to 400 F. Fit pastry into a 9-inch pie plate. Set aside.

Let your child measure and stir together sugar, flour, nutmeg and dash of salt in a mixing bowl.

Beat eggs until smooth.

Stir dry mixture into beaten eggs. Add diced rhubarb. Stir.

Fill the crust evenly with the rhubarb mixture.

Dot with firm butter. (Cover edge with 2-to-3-inch strip of aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning, if

you wish. Remove foil last 15 minutes of baking.)

Bake for 50 minutes.

Cool, and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Walleye, on the other hand, sometimes require more planning to hook. Some of the best days for fishing can be some of the least favourable conditions for anglers.

Walleye will tend to be more active at night, and on cloudy, windy days. They prefer these types of conditions because wave action not only increases the oxygen in the water, but also allows them to be more concealed from their predators.

Prime walleye fishing is at night, and in early spring. They can still be caught on a summer day, however, and sometimes they will take your bait if they are annoyed. Walleye will generally chase their prey, unlike pike, who will wait in the weeds (or other cover) for their prey to come to them.

•1⁄2 cup brown sugar, plus extra to sprinkle •Finely grated peel of 1 unwaxed lemon •3⁄4 cup walnuts, chopped •8 ounces black grapes, seeded (Sangiovese wine grapes, if possible) •2 cups heavy cream or mascarpone •3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar •6 tablespoons Vin Santo •1 jelly roll pan, 9 x 13 inches, oiled

Put the lime juice, ginger wine, rum or vodka,

and sugar into a pitcher and stir until the sugar dissolves.

Fill a punch bowl with ice, add the sliced fruit, and pour the ginger wine mixture over. Stir well and serve with sprigs of mint.

Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel, and let rise until doubled in size — about 1 hour.

To make the walnut butter, cream the butter and sugar together, then stir in the lemon peel and walnuts. Keep at room temperature.

Uncover the dough, punch out the air, then

shape into a ball. Roll or pull the dough into a rectangle to line the prepared jelly roll pan. Spread the walnut butter over the schiacciata crust, add the grapes, and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour until puffy and doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Uncover the dough and bake for 15 minutes. Turn the oven down to 350 F and bake for 20 minutes more or until risen and golden.

Let cool slightly before turning out.

To make the Vin Santo cream, beat the cream, confectioners’ sugar and Vin Santo together in a bowl until the mixture forms soft peaks. Cut the focaccia into wedges and serve with the Vin Santo cream.
