It was an opportunity for some hands-on history education, and to do some community service as 20 Grade 10 history students from Yorkton Regional High School visited the City of Yorkton Cemetery Tuesday afternoon to clean the headstones of Yorkton and area veterans in preparation for Decoration Day ceremonies planned for June 6. The students also had an opportunity to meet with a number of veterans to learn a little history, and to say thanks for the service of the veterans.

tion, or just wants people to feel sorry for her? I am her daughter, and our family is just upset because of the way she acts. She does have depression, but she has been given depression pills.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My 93-year-old mom is in good condition, except for a kidney disease that has been good for the past 26 years and has had very good reports from her medical practitioner and kidney specialist. One thing that stresses me is why she complains of being sick all the time. Is it because she wants atten-
PICKS OF THE WEEK “Annihilation” (R) — Based on the first installment of the “Southern Reach Trilogy” by Jeff Vandermeer, “Annihilation” stars Natalie Portman as Lena, a biologist whose military husband Kane (Oscar Issacs) returns — barely alive — a year after being presumed dead on a mission to a biological anomaly called “the Shimmer.” In order to treat him, Lena must find out what happened to him, and so becomes a willing participant in a return mission. She is joined by psychologist Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a physicist (Tessa Thompson), anthropologist (Tuva Novotny) and paramedic (Gina Rodriguez). Each discipline reveals new horrors inside the Shimmer: disturbing debilitating personality changes, deconstruction of DNA, morphing species and more, and all the while, the group is being stalked by strange, unrecognizable forces. “Borg vs McEnroe” (R) — The fire and ice rivalry that was John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg in the summer of 1980 is meticulously detailed and gloriously brash
Please give me some information as to why she is doing this. As her daughter, I need TLC, and I need to know how to handle this situation. — A.M.A. ANSWER: Based on no more information than you have just given me, I would suspect that she complains about being sick all the time because she feels sick all the time. She probably needs some TLC herself. At 93, I believe she’s earned the right to be the
one on the receiving end. Depression may be the cause of her not feeling well, as it so often is. Unfortunately, medication for depression is completely effective for only a minority of people. Depression goes hand in hand with many other illnesses, especially those with chronic pain. I worry that there is a problem you don’t know about. Consider accompanying your mother to her next doctor’s visit, as I am certain she has done for you. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ail-
Shia LaBouf, Sverrir Gudnason in “Borg vs McEnroe” seen through the eyes of director Janus Metz. Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) is leading into his attempt at a record-breaking fifth consecutive Wimbledon win. He is the embodiment of cool, controlled elegance. Opposing him is a young, loudmouth upstart, the talented but feisty John McEnroe (played to perfection by Shia LaBouf). The contrasting personali-
ties alone make the matchup dramatic, and we are treated to perfect character studies of these men, culminating in the tense, nail-biting set that transfixed the tennis world. “Beirut” (R) — Jon Hamm turns in a convincing performance as Mason Skiles, a former diplomat to Lebanon whose wife was murdered in a terrorist attack. He leaves state
ments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? — V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important
action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes.
service and fades into a life of alcohol-laced labor negotiations until he is resurrected 10 years later when CIA operative Cal Riley (Mark Pellegrino) — a former contact — is abducted in Beirut, and Mason is requested as the negotiator. Old relationships surface, as he and agent Sandy Crowder (Rosamund Pike) must track down and free the man who orchestrated his wife’s death to exchange for Riley. The gritty, urgent feel is palpable, as are the competing undercurrents of American, Israeli and local interests. “Journey’s End” (R) — Based on the play of the same name by R.C. Sherriff, “Journey’s End” details a tragic and heroic group of World War I soldiers — stuck in a trench, their only orders to hold the line for as long as possible. No one expects that time frame to be very long. Asa Butterfield brings his dazzling innocence as Raleigh, a young offi-
cer who is excited to take his post under his former schoolmate, now Capt. Stanhope (Sam Claflin). Stanhope, romantically attached to Raleigh’s sister, is a shell of his former self who stays deep in the bottle in order to deal with the anxieties of his station. The message: War is hell. Cherish your memories.
Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The new booklet on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease explains both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD, in detail. Readers can

SGI partners with Canadian Red Cross SGI CANADA has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan to provide both financial and volunteer support to help people impacted by disasters in the province. “SGI CANADA is proud to support our communities and the Red Cross, and help in times of need,” Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave said. “This partnership is a great fit. As an insurance company, SGI employees often deal directly with people affected by extreme weather events and know the impacts can be devastating.” The Red Cross is dedicated to improving the lives of vul-
nerable people, including those who have been affected by natural disasters. To help with these efforts, SGI CANADA is committing $35,000, which includes $25,000 for flood clean-up kits, assistance for families with long-term recovery needs, and ongoing Red Cross emergency preparedness and awareness efforts. An additional $10,000 will be provided for equipment and necessities as urgently identified. SGI CANADA is also providing an opportunity for the Red Cross to access a list of SGI volunteers to assist with disaster efforts under the Red Cross
Ready When the Time Comes program. Volunteer work may include helping with set-up and take-down at evacuation shelters, handing out supplies, assisting with outings and field trips for evacuees, helping entertain children in the shelters, and other duties identified by the Red Cross. “We all know that when a disaster hits, quick action is key and it’s all hands on deck,” Canadian Red Cross Vice-President Saskatchewan Cindy Fuchs said. “So being able to provide people with clean-up kits immediately, and quickly schedule SGI volunteers, means we can be more
responsive when people need help the most. SGI CANADA is one of the first companies to enter a partnership for disaster recovery, providing both financial and volunteer recovery support for families affected by disasters.” Earlier this month, clean-up kits were provided to 15 families on the Standing Buffalo First Nation near Fort Qu’Appelle, who were impacted by wildfires. The kits were used in clean-up efforts for evacuated homes that withstood the fires, but were impacted by smoke. “We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to our
communities by working with an established, trusted and respected disaster response organization like the Red Cross,” Hargrave said.
SGI CANADA is the trade name of the property and casualty insurance division of SGI, offering products in five of Canada’s provinces. It operates as SGI CANADA in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario, and also as Coachman Insurance Company in Ontario.
Products are sold through a network of independent insurance brokers.

per cent of the crop seeded. Ninety-three per cent is seeded in the southeast, 92 per cent in the westcentral region, 90 per cent in the northwest, 87 per cent in the northeast and 86 per cent in the eastcentral region. Ninety-eight per cent of lentils, 94 per cent of durum, 92 per cent of
Suspects sought in Rhein home invasion On May 30, 2018, shortly before 1:30 a.m., Yorkton Rural RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter and robbery at a residence in the community of Rhein, Saskatchewan. Initial investigation has revealed multiple individuals wearing masks entered the residence with weapons. The lone adult male inside the residence was assaulted and a number of items were taken including a large sum of cash and two firearms. The individuals left the scene in an unknown direction. The adult male was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries. Yorkton Rural RCMP believe there is no threat
to public safety at this time. They do not have any further descriptions of the people who entered the residence. Yorkton Rural RCMP continues to investigate with the assistance of the Yorkton Forensic Identification Section. Yorkton Rural RCMP are seeking assistance from the public in identifying any suspicious vehicles that may have been traveling in or around the Rhein area on May 29 and 30. They encourage anyone with information to report it to Yorkton Rural RCMP at 306-786-4500 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
spring wheat, 90 per cent of soybeans, 88 per cent of canola, 85 per cent of barley and 84 per cent of flax have now been seeded. Scattered rain showers brought varying amounts of rain this past week, helping to temporarily alleviate concerns of dry field conditions. Rainfall ranged from trace amounts to 72 mm in the Humboldt area with many areas reporting about 25 mm or less. While significant rain is still needed in the majority of the province to help crops emerge and hay land and pasture establish, some areas in the northeast have excess moisture. Topsoil moisture conditions have slightly improved with recent rainfall. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on crop land are rated as one per cent surplus,
51 per cent adequate, 36 per cent short and 12 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 38 per cent adequate, 44 per cent short and 18 per cent very short. Overall, emerged crops are in poor-to-good condition, but emergence has been patchy and delayed by dry field conditions. The majority of crop damage this past week was caused by strong winds, lack of moisture and insects such as flea beetles and cutworms in canola. Localized hail was also reported in some areas. Farmers are busy finishing up seeding, picking rocks and starting in-crop pesticide applications. SaskPower says there were 15 reported cases of farm machinery contacting electrical equipment in the last week. That brings

Managing salinity with perennial forages by Charlotte Ward, PAg Agri-Environmental Specialist, Yorkton Regional Services Branch Soil salinity is considered a threat to longterm sustainable production in many parts of the Prairies. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada estimates approximately 5.52 million acres of agricultural land in Saskatchewan are at moderate to high risk of salinization. Soil salinity levels range from non-saline (zero decisiemens per metre (dS/m)) to very severely saline (greater than 16 dS/m). As soil salinity levels increase, the stress on germinating seedlings also increases. Soluble salts prevent plants from taking up the proper balance of nutrients and water required for growth. In general, perennial plants can handle salinity better than annual plants. Perennial forages have
various levels of salt tolerance. Species such as tall wheatgrass, green wheatgrass, altai wildrye, Russian wildrye, slender and western wheatgrass have high salt tolerance (<16 dS/m). Slightly less saline tolerant forages include sweet clover, established alfalfa, tall fescue, and smooth bromegrass (<8 dS/m) as well as crested wheatgrass, intermediate wheatgrass and meadow bromegrass (<4 dS/m). Seedling alfalfa, white, red and alsike clovers have very low salt tolerance (2 dS/m). In comparison, barley has a salt tolerance of 8 dS/m. Recent forage breeding programs have recognized the challenge salinity poses to agricultural production and efforts have been made to develop forage varieties or species with improved salt tolerance. For example, newly developed varieties of alfalfa and green wheatgrass exceed the salt toler—watering can —Tinker Toys and waterproof pens for plant markers (optional)
Beautiful things can emerge when you dig right in. A natural, glorious garden that just happens to be edible is a great place to start. So find an old wagon at a garage sale, or use one that your kids have outgrown, let the soil run through your fingers, and plant a garden on wheels together. This is an easy project for the beginning gardeners in your family, and the results are so rewarding. Children can plant, water, weed and tend their own plants without becoming overwhelmed by a big garden plot. And since the garden on wheels is portable, they can move it around the yard or deck for maximum sun exposure throughout the day. Here’s the stuff you need: —-an old wagon, wheelbarrow or wagonlike toy on wheels —drill and 1/4-inch drill bit —wire mesh screen, such as window screen (optional) —potting soil mix —potted edible plants, such as herbs (parsley, basil, tarragon, thyme, etc.), lettuce and kale —kid-size gardening tools
Here’s the fun: 1. An adult should drill several drainage holes in the bottom of the wagon or wheelbarrow about 6 inches apart. You may wish to lay mesh screen over the bottom to keep soil from falling through the holes. Fill with potting soil mix. Leave at least 3/4 inch to the wagon edge. 2. Plant potted plants, keeping in mind their eventual size: Put taller plants in the middle, small plants along the sides. You also could plant a few lettuce seeds placed in the soil in the shape of the letter of your child’s first name. Or, choose a colorful edible flower or two. 3. Water with a watering can or slow-running hose. It’s a good idea to give it six hours of direct sun each day. Add plant food throughout the growing season, and you’ll have the loveliest garden on wheels ever. 4. If your child wishes to make small identifica-

Perennial forage blends can be seeded on land with varying levels of soil salinity. ance levels of their predecessors. As salinity can vary within a very small area, one strategy when establishing forages in saline areas is to seed a complex mix of grasses and legumes with varying levels of salt tolerance. The result is greater establishment suc-
cess and lessens the likelihood of establishment for weedy species such as foxtail barley. Late fall plantings are often the best time to establish forages in saline soils when drier soils permit machinery to cross with minimal difficulty. Seeds will germinate early

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Justin refused to do Bill’s bidding and decided to reach out to Donna for information about the wedding. Bill seethed as Wyatt stood up to him. Liam struggled to contain his anger after learning what his father had done. Brooke’s heart broke for her daughter, but Ridge was relieved about Hope’s initial decision. Liam confronted his father about all the deceit and pain he caused so many people. Steffy and Hope reached an impasse, neither willing to give up on Liam. Steffy fell after Bill arrived uninvited at her home. Brooke advised Hope to not waste any time and marry Liam. Fearing for the health of their unborn child, a frantic Steffy called Liam to tell him about her accident. Wait to See: Steffy goes into early labor. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Brady was ready to choose between Theresa and Eve, but was thrown a curveball before he could give his answer. John and Paul were caught by Mateo and his minions. Victor was furious when Sonny told him about Leo’s lawsuit. Stefan offered Kayla a deal to help Steve regain his vision. Laura arrived to help Abigail integrate her personalities. Gabi was on the hot seat once again. Hope received some stunning news about Ben Weston. Xander continued to be a thorn in Theresa’s side. Chloe and Eve compared notes about Theresa. Tripp pressed Ciara for an explanation when she once again pulled away from him. Back from Mexico, Paul and John reunited with Will and Marlena. Wait to See: Hope tells JJ about Ben’s impending release. GENERAL HOSPITAL Carly finally snapped. Andre was reluctant to proceed. Alexis ran into Kevin. Kiki received some infuriating information. Peter gained some leverage. Jason was noncommittal. Alexis wanted to get to the root of a problem. Elizabeth offered her support. Julian was disappointed. Obrecht placed
blame. Ava discouraged Griffin. Valentin tried to defend himself. Sam was terrified. Andre shared his fears. Carly decided to look on the bright side. Jason offered words of encouragement. Maxie felt foolish. Nina received a mysterious text. Anna wanted to make up for lost time. Wait to See: Alexis confronts Monica. Â THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Jack grew more and more frustrated by the changes that Billy was making to Jabot, but Kyle encouraged him to stay positive and stick it out. After a pep talk from Lily, Abby decided to invite Arturo to spend the holiday weekend with her in Miami. The two became more in sync than ever, but trouble started to brew when Nikki spotted them kissing on the roof deck. Charlie found himself losing his cool around Shauna, who later revealed that she had run away from home. Nick and Victor continued to repair their damaged relationship, and Nick even considered rejoining Newman Enterprises. Jack reached his breaking point when Billy decided to discontinue a classic perfume that had been sold by Jabot for years. Wait to See: Sharon makes a painful decision.

{WITH MIXER & CADDY AUCTION ON JUNE 15TH}
By Cindy Elavsky Q: It seems like a long time since new episodes of “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce” has aired. Please tell me it hasn’t been canceled! — Christy R., via email A: It has not been canceled, Christy — thank goodness. The fifth and final season of the hit Bravo show returns on Thursday, June 14, at 10/9c with six brand-new episodes. This season, Abby (Lisa Edelstein) is torn between an old and new love; Phoebe (Beau Garrett) flirts with a new experience and gets reacquainted with her estranged brother; Delia (Necar Zadegan) decides she wants a baby; Frumpkis returns from rehab, throwing a wrench in Jo’s (Alanna Ubach) new relationship with Albert; and Barbara (Retta) gets cold feet with Darrell. So, yeah, our favorite divorcees are not going quietly into that good night. Q: Is it true that Connie Britton won’t be back for season two of “9-1-1”? — Marie F., Norfolk, Virginia A: Connie initially signed a one-year deal with the first-responder drama and won’t be a series regular for the second season. However, that doesn’t mean that we’ve seen the last of her. Although no official announcement has been made as of this writing, she could return as a guest star. What I do know, officially, is that Jennifer Love Hewitt is joining the cast as Maddie, firefighter Buck’s sister, who joins as a series regular and will portray a 911 operator. “9-1-1” returns to Fox this fall on Mondays at 9/8c. Speaking of Connie Britton, she will play opposite Eric Bana in Bravo’s new true-crime series “Dirty John,” which is based on Los Angeles Times reporter Christopher Goffard’s popular podcast of the same name. Eric plays
ger and black pepper; add salmon turning to coat. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until cooked through. Serve salmon with pepper mixture and cooked brown rice. Garnish with fresh basil. Serves 4. • Each serving: About 505 calories, 1g fat (3g saturated), 36g protein, 51g carbs, 5g fiber, 875mg
sodium. GARLIC PARMESAN ROASTED SHRIMP The easiest roasted shrimp cocktail ever made with just 5 minutes prep. Yes, it’s just that easy!
Connie Britton the titular character, John Meehan, who romances Connie’s character, Debra Newell, a successful interior designer and single mom, who is later pulled into John’s web of lies. According to Bravo, “Dirty John” follows “the true story of how a romance with Meehan spiraled into secrets, denial and manipulation.” Connie also is an executive producer on the series, which has already been greenlighted for two seasons, the second of which will deal with an entirely different case. READERS: I reported a few months ago that ABC had canceled Tim Allen’s sitcom “Last Man Standing,” and I suggested that another network could possibly pick it up. While my guess that CMT would be said network was incorrect, the popular series has been given new life by Fox. Tim and the rest of the gang will be back for its seventh season this fall, with showrunners promising there will be minimal changes to the show that its fans know and love. Many are speculating that Fox’s snapping up of the politically right-leaning show piggybacks on the recent success of the resurrected “Roseanne” on ABC, whose namesake star is an outspoken Trump supporter. SUMMER SPECIAL
2 FOR 1 GREEN FEES
Quickly gaining the reputation as one of Saskatchewan’s Best 9’s with 5 of 9 holes re-built in 1999 by Grant Golf of Winnipeg, Canora boasts two settings - tall poplar & evergreen fairways contrast into links style holes with knee high natural grass areas lining wide fairways. As well as the park like beauty of the golf course, a spectacular Parkland view opens up adjacent to 6 & 7 fairways including a pristine country church in the background. A practice range, practice green and putting green are also available to sharpen your game. Canora is located between Good Spirit Provincial Park, Duck Mountain Provincial Park & Crystal Lake Resort, and is a must to play for golf enthusiasts of all skill levels. Greens Superintendent, Peter Steranko, has done a yeoman job in getting the course and specifically the greens in great shape. The clubhouse, managed by Donna Rock, features a sun-drenched deck area with food and beverage service. The clubhouse also caters to non-golf events.

in cooler water, and night crawlers in warmer water. For ice fishing, try to set up over or near underwater structure such as rocks or weedy areas. Lake of the Prairies has plenty of that, and ice fishing for perch should make for a day of good action.
Along with boat fishing, there are options for shore fishing as well. Calvin Daniels, from Yorkton This Week, says that many of the shore fishing options are located at lodges and resorts, though he has had some success fishing from the Roblin Bridge. Both the ice fishery and the open water season are very popular, and there are two annual derbies on the lake. During the summer, take advantage of the Russell Lions Prairie Classic, June 10 and 11, 2017. In the winter, the Assessippi Parkland Tourism puts on an ice fishing derby each February.
Carp are also present in Lake of the Prairies, though they tend to feed less in the winter, which can be challenging for ice anglers. If carp are what you’re after, try fishing in warmer water. Typically, they will be more active in warm water. Much like bass, they can be easier to catch when the water is warm.

Rock bass can be an underrated fishery. While they aren’t huge, rock bass can be fun to catch, and they will often bite when other species won’t. This can make them a terrific fish for kids to catch. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cheer up, Lamb. Your emotional impasse will lift once you allow your highly tuned sense of justice to guide you on what to do about an associate’s questionable behavior. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) News about a project you hoped to work on might need more clarification. Take nothing just on faith. Draw up a list of questions, and insist on each being fully answered. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Giving your time to help others is fine. But don’t lose sight of your own needs. Make plans for an energy-restoring getaway with that very special person in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Congratulate yourself on getting that difficult job done to everyone’s satisfaction. This could be the first of many such challenges you might be offered down the line.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) With your enthusiasm soaring again, you feel ready to tackle a tough new assignment. Good for you! And remember: Don’t be too proud to accept help when it’s offered. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Cupid rules the week for single Virgos eager to make a romantic connection. Meanwhile, Virgo couples experience renewed commitment in their relationships. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Home and work issues vie for your attention through early next week. Rely on your Libran sense of balance to keep you from being overwhelmed by either side. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creative projects might have to go on standby as you tackle other matters making demands on your time and energy. Things should ease by the middle of next week.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your energies are high, and so are your aspirations. But be careful not to let work dominate the week. It’s also important to spend time with family and friends. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) It’s a good time to set aside your pride and stop nursing those hurt feelings. Instead, consider restoring relationships you want to have back in your life. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might be miffed at not being shown more appreciation for your hard work. But don’t brood over it. Recognition comes in its own time and in its own way. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With your inner creative juices starting to boil and bubble, this is a good time to launch a new arts-related project, or go back and restart the one you had set aside. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of seeing the best in people, which helps encourage them to live up to your perceptions.
Laughter’s magic is no joke It has often been said that laughter is the best medicine. But what is so beneficial about everything from a chuckle to a hearty belly laugh? According to Helpguide. org, a mental and emotional health resource, laughter strengthens the
immune system, diminishes pain, protects against the effects of stress, and can boost mood. Those who seek out more opportunities to laugh may experience marked improvements in their emotional health. The Mayo Clinic says

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I disagree with what you wrote about buying a license and tags for cats that stay indoors. Requiring a license for indoor cats is such a government scam. It’s just another dirty local tax to burden the people with — like the little fees on our phone bills! I love my country, but these hidden taxes aren’t right. — Tim in Lancaster, Ohio DEAR TIM: I know how
frustrating it can be to pay additional fees for many things, especially when prices are rising for products like gasoline. But I also stand by my original article. Even indoor cats need routine vaccinations and, if mandated, license tags. Even the best pet owner in the world can be impacted by unforeseen events. Say a natural disaster hits, like a tornado or a mudslide — something with little or no warning. In the chaos, pets can and will escape to a safer place. For example, during a recent house fire in my community, firefighters rushed in to save the homeowner, who was trapped with her dog in a back bedroom. They were able to
• On June 17, 1885, the dismantled Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, arrives in New York Harbor packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue was reassembled and dedicated the following year. • On June 13, 1895, Emile Levassor drives a Panhard et Levassor car with a two-cylinder, 750rpm, four-horsepower engine to victory in the world’s first real automobile race. He completed the 732-mile course in just under 49 hours, at a thenimpressive speed of about 15 mph. • On June 15, 1917, two months after America entered World War I against Germany, Congress passes the Espionage Act. The act made it a crime to convey information intended to interfere with the U.S. armed forces prosecution of the war or to promote the success of the country’s enemies. • On June 12, 1940, Edsel Ford agrees to
manufacture 9,000 RollsRoyce-designed engines to be used in British and U.S. airplanes in World War II. A biography about Edsel’s father, Henry, later revealed that Henry had already accepted a contract to work with the German government. He eventually reversed his position. • On June 14, 1951, the U.S. Census Bureau dedicates UNIVAC, the world’s first commercially produced electronic digital computer. Weighing 16,000 pounds, UNIVAC used 5,000 vacuum tubes, and could perform about 1,000 calculations per second. • On June 16, 1963, aboard Vostok 6, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first woman to travel into space. She returned to Earth after 48 orbits, having spent more time in space than all U.S. astronauts combined to that date. • On June 11, 1979, actor John Wayne, born Marion Morrison in Iowa, dies at age 72. In his early acting jobs Wayne was credited as Duke Morrison, a childhood nickname derived from the name of his beloved pet dog.

This happens to us all the time with computers, and nobody thinks of complaining.” • The Secret Service is well-known today as the protector of the U.S. president, so you might be surprised to learn that it was originally established to fight counterfeit currency. • The world record for the most published works by a single author is held by L. Ron Hubbard (who also, incidentally, founded the Church of Scientology). His first work was published in February 1934, and his final work — number 1,084 — was published in March 2006. • Doubtless you’ve heard of the Taj Mahal in India, but did you know that there is a tourist attraction in America that is so grand it is popularly known as the Taj Mahal of the West? In 1968, a group of Hare Krishnas found-
ed the New Vrindaban Community near Wheeling, West Virginia. Though they began on 100 acres with no electricity or running water, the community now covers more than 1,200 acres and features Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold, an ornate edifice of gold, marble and hand-carved teakwood. • Brain: The brain benefits from cardiovascular exercise in myriad ways. Cardio increases blood flow and decreases a person’s risk of stroke, a potentially debilitating and even deadly interruption in the flow of blood to the brain. Cardio also has been shown to improve memory and cognitive ability, while helping men and women combat agerelated decline in brain function. • Skin: Even skin, the largest organ in the human body, can benefit from cardio. Creating a better work/life balance Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more
than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling
that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family. • Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in
(NC) — With the warmer weather upon us, spring cleaning may be on your mind. And if you have asthma, it’s a good idea to focus some of your cleaning efforts on the air you breathe inside your home. Indoor air is an important health concern, as most Canadians spend up to 90 per cent of their time indoors. Poor indoor air quality can play a significant role in triggering certain conditions, like asthma. Here are tips on reducing some of the more common indoor triggers: Dust and dust mites: • Remove or reduce dust-collecting items such as carpeting, drapes, stuffed toys and old pillows. • Wash bedding weekly in hot water. • Encase pillows and mattresses in covers that are dust mite-proof. • Keep humidity level below 50 per cent. • Vacuum regularly using a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter or central vacuum. Mould: • If the humidity level is greater than 50 per cent, use a dehumidifier. • Limit the number of plants in your home. • Fix leaks and moisture problems as quickly as possible. • Remove clutter and allow air to flow throughout your home, especially in the basement. • For small amounts of mould, use warm soapy water to clean it up. For larger amounts, hire mould abatement experts. • Check that your eavestroughs and drain spouts are clear of any buildup. • Make sure the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation so that rainwater drains away — water should flow easily away from the house. • Throw away musty items.
Cleaning products: • Many household cleaning products contain chemicals that irritate the lungs, so buy air-friendly versions or make your own. • When using cleaning products, air out the home by opening windows and using vent fans.
Cigarette smoke: • Do not allow smoking in your home or car at any time. • If you smoke, take it outside every time; when you’re ready to quit, you can seek help from the Lung Association Find more information online at lungontario.ca.

regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to
spend with their families. • Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to workrelated stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time. • Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking
their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames. • Unplug when you get home. Perhaps the simplest and most effective way for parents to regain a healthy work-life balance is to unplug their devices. Employing “Do not disturb” settings on smartphones and turning off tablets can ensure parents don’t spend their time at home working but connecting with their families. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is no small task for today’s working parents. But such a goal is possible.

Strawberries have been considered a tasty and nutritious treat for hundreds of years. Nutritional experts believe that strawberries are as close as you can get to a perfect fruit. They’re low in calories (27 in 100g) and fat-free, but packed with nutrients, including vitamins and antioxidants that bring numerous health benefits. Eating just five strawberries gives you more vitamin C than an orange. The vitamin content in strawberries drops quickly, so you need to eat them as soon as you can after they’ve been picked. The strawberry got its name from the common practice of growing ber-
ries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts. A member of the rose family, the strawberry sometimes gives off a rose-like aroma. Many speculate about how the luscious fruit was discovered. It is known that the strawberry goes as far back as the Romans, and perhaps even the Greeks. The strawberry plant was originally grown in Northern Europe, but wild species also are found in Russia, Chile and North America. At one time, wild strawberries grew everywhere from Canada to the Carolinas and westward beyond the Appalachian
Mountains. Before modern refrigeration, a day of “strawberring” meant a long day of picking, followed by gorging on delicious strawberry treats — pies, tarts, shortcake and all the ripe strawberries the family could consume. Berries that were not eaten were preserved as jam, jelly, sauce, strawberry vinegar and strawberry tonic, a medicinal drink. The remaining berries were dried on flat rocks for several days. These dried berries would be used throughout the fall and winter in breads, cakes, puddings and porridge.
• Sunburn relief: Take two nonsteroidal antiinflammatories right away (aspirin, ibuprofen) and soak a cloth in cold milk. Drape over the burn until it warms to room temperature. Repeat if necessary and apply a light moisturizer. • “When purchasing clothes for a loved one in a care facility, look for garments that are comfort-
able and stylish, but double-check that they do not require any special care, like ironing or dry cleaning. Also, be sure they are labeled clearly with the person’s name.” — C.G. in Michigan • If you want your chocolate chip cookies to really pop, sprinkle lightly with course sea salt before baking. They do not come out tasting salty. Rather, the salt enhances the sweetness and make the whole thing extra delicious. • “When you shop for shoes, go in the evening. Feet swell and expand throughout the day, so if you buy shoes in the morning, the fit might not feel
too good later in the day.” — A.T. in Louisiana • “I make my grilled cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise instead of butter. I know it sounds gross, but it is so good. The oil and egg in the mayo flavor and crisp the bread without leaving it too greasy.” — S.O. in Alabama • To ease the ache of a “brain freeze” after eating or drinking something really cold, simply cup your hands over your mouth and nose. Blow out hot air, and it recirculates to warm your palate in seconds. Works like a charm. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
The first American species of strawberry was cultivated in about 1835. Today, the strawberry is the leading small fruit crop in the U.S. It is farmed from Florida to Alaska, with the largest strawberry growing centers located in California and Florida. When picking or buying packages of strawberries, look for ripe, shiny and brilliantly colored berries without any soft or brown patches. Never buy strawberries that are green or hard, or that look dry, dull or wrinkled. When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there is a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed. Always dispose of any berries that have signs of mildew or are rotten, as they’ll contaminate the rest. Refrigerating strawberries ruins the flavor, and the strawberry aroma is easily picked up by other foods in the refrigerator. Store the berries in a cool place. Strawberries should be lightly rinsed, not washed, before serving, and eaten as soon as possible.
This recipe for Strawberry Flower Cups is an easy way to serve fresh berries as a dessert or to use as a beautiful decoration. The strawberries are cut to resemble flower petals then stuffed with sweetened cream cheese. It’s a cool, delicious way to showcase these beautiful berries! STRAWBERRY FLOWER CUPS •32 fresh, whole strawberries, large •12 ounces cream cheese, softened •1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar •1/4 teaspoon almond extract •2 tablespoons semisweet or milk chocolate, grated Lightly rinse the strawberries and gently place them in a colander to drain. Cut a thin slice from the stem end of each strawberry to create a base so that the berries will stand upright on the flattened end. Place the berries, cut side down, on a cutting board. Carefully cut each berry into 4 wedges, but do not cut through the bottom. Use your finger to gently press down in the center
of the berry so that the wedges fan out just slightly, taking care not to break the berries apart. Set the berries aside. Using a small mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar and almond extract until light and fluffy. Gently fold in half of the grated chocolate. Use a teaspoon, a plastic sandwich bag with a small hole cut into the end or a decorating bag with decorative tip to fill the berries with the cream-cheese mixture. Sprinkle the remaining grated chocolate over each berry. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Makes about 32 filled strawberries. Try something new with sweet potato chorizo mole Traditional mole sauce typically gets some of its depth from the addition of bittersweet chocolate. This recipe for “Sweet Potato Chorizo Mole” from Joy Manning and Tara Mataraza Desmond’s “Almost Meatless” (Ten Speed Press) utilizes bittersweet chocolate as well. The result is a flavorful dish that’s sure to please.

deglaze, scraping the bits from the bottom. Add the chopped tomatoes, cumin, chile powder, and chocolate. Stir to combine while the chocolate melts. Add the corn and black beans, reduce the heat to medium, and allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir in the water. Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper if necessary. Meanwhile, to assemble and cook, spread onethird of the sweet potatoes on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, overlapping the slices. Scoop half the tomato mixture (a heaping cup) and spread evenly across the first layer of potatoes. Top with one-third of the shredded cheese. Repeat this layering process, ending with a layer of potatoes. Reserve the last third of the cheese. Once assembled, cover with foil, pushing it onto the surface of the top layer, and bake for 1 to 1-1⁄2 hours, until potatoes are fork tender (yellow sweet potatoes tend to take longer). Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining third of the cheese atop the potatoes. Bake for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest for at least 10 minutes to allow the layers to set up. Cut and serve with avocado and lime wedges. Garnish with cilantro as desired.
