Summer deals Beach goers perused the Good Spirit summer market at the provincial park on Saturday. The market brought together local businesses on June 30. It was the first gathering of the season. The market will be held every Saturday this summer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Crops generally in good condition Across the province, the majority of crops are in good condition and at their normal stages of development for this time of year, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Seventy-six per cent of the oilseeds and fall and spring cereals are at their normal stages of development, while 80 per cent of the pulses are at the normal stages of development for this time of year.

Sixty-five per cent of spring wheat, 57 per cent of canola, 47 per cent of lentils and 54 per cent of peas are in good condition. Many areas received rain showers this week, although amounts varied significantly. In some areas in the southwest, the rain has helped replenish top soil moisture. The Vanguard area received 80 mm of rain, the Shaunavon area 49 mm, the Success area

39 mm, the Fife Lake area 23 mm, the Mossbank area 15 mm and the Tompkins area 18 mm. Other parts of Saskatchewan reporting significant rainfall include the Broadview area 56 mm, the Fillmore area 30 mm, the Jedburgh area 53 mm, the Humboldt area 38 mm, the Eyebrow area 42 mm and the Tisdale area 32 mm. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as two

per cent surplus, 64 per cent adequate, 30 per cent short and four per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 55 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 10 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture is in shortest supply in the southwest. Haying operations have started and five per cent of the hay crop has been cut and two per cent baled or put into silage. Across the

New fees for Provincial Court services The Ministry of Justice has completed an extensive review of fees for services within Provincial Court. User fees are charged for a number of different services, such as photocopying, processing applications for record suspensions or issuing a summons for Small Claims Court. This review looked into each task and the actual cost of providing the service. It also looked at fees charged in other provinces and how Saskatchewan’s current fees compare. Although some fees have been revised over the

years, the Provincial Court Fees Regulations have not been changed since 1988. The current fees have not kept up with the actual costs of operating the courts. “The introduction of new fees and changes to existing fees will better reflect the costs of the services being provided,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan said. “Consideration was also given to maintain a fee structure that won’t restrict access to the courts and low income individuals will be able to obtain

fee waiver certificates.” Payments for court fees can be made in person with cash, debit, cheque, money order or credit card. Credit card informa-

As well as starting to cut hay, producers are finishing weed control operations. The majority of crop damage this week was due to lack of moisture. Cutworms are still causing damage in some areas. province, quality is rated as eight per cent excellent, 44 per cent good, 38 per cent fair and 10 per cent poor. Crops, hay and pasture — particularly in the southwestern and westcentral regions — are being affected by the dry conditions. Residential Specialist Serving Grenfell and Area

306-697-7768

Over the past 27 years, I was in the beauty industry as a stylist not only making clients look their best but listening and making many connections with the public. These connections with the people of Grenfell and area will continue to grow in my journey with Real Estate, “Opening Doors to New Beginnings”. I am very excited to be a part of the RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty team and look forward to serving the residential real estate needs of Grenfell and area. I was born and raised in Grenfell where I still reside, now on a farm with my husband Dave. We have 1 son, Dustin and his wife Pam, grandson Easton, and 1 more grand baby coming in July. We have 2 lovely daughters, Grayson and Cabri who are still in high school. My hobbies and interests are family, traveling, camping, kayaking, walking, cooking, decorating anything, hair design, volunteering and reading. My new passion will be helping people buy and sell their homes. I would love to hear from you whether you are looking to buy or sell a property. I am a motivated, energetic individual who will continue to work with you every step of the way to your new beginnings.

• Moving tip: Put books into suitcases, which often have wheels and good handles, in order to transport them. Books placed in boxes can get unbalanced when they don’t fill the box efficiently. It makes them hard to carry and hard to stack, since you risk the corners crushing. But suitcases are easy to carry right to the shelf before unloading. • Finding a bandage to cover a skinned knee or elbow is almost impossible. These can be a large or irregular area that doesn’t fit under even the most generous of bandages, and adhesive bandages just don’t stick well over a joint. Here’s a tip for that: Apply antibacterial ointment generously, then cover the knee or elbow with a regular gauze pad. Then add a “sleeve” cut from a pair of tights. It moves with the joint without bunching up the way an ACE bandage does, and it stays in place. • “After the kids decorated cupcakes one day, I found that the counter and floor were covered with little spilled sprinkles. They were the ball kind, and they were hard to pick up. Rather than sweeping them up (which made them go flying), I used a lint roller, which worked perfectly.” — S.I. in New York

At one point during the sound mixing, the sound designer needed to use Reel 2, Dialog 2, and so asked for “R2D2.” Lucas liked the sound of it so much that he used it for the name of a robot character in his

“Being head of state is an extremely thankless job.” • If you suffer from ophidiophobia — and, sadly, many people do — you may find the following tidbit to be rather unsettling: There are more than 3,000 different species of snakes. • Researchers have discovered that humans aren’t the only ones to imbibe alcohol on a regu-

Saoirse Ronan Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon will revisit being “Legally Blonde” for the third time. The original 2001 film earned $141 million, while the sequel netted $124 million. In addition, a musical based on the film is still touring the U.S., proving its popularity. No cast or release date has been announced for “Legally Blonde 3.” Julia Roberts presented two-time Oscar winner George Clooney with the American Film Award in a June 7 ceremony, which aired June 8 on TNT. If you missed it, it will re-air in September on TCM. “The Addams Family” will never die. First it was a TV series with John Aston and Carolyn Jones (1962-1964), then several films with Raul Julia and Angelica Huston, as Gomez and Morticia, in 1991 (cost $30 million/gross $191 million) and 1993 ($47 million cost, $49 million U.S. gross). This time out it will be an animated film with the voices of Oscar Isaac (as Gomez), Charlize Theron (as Morticia), Bette Midler (as Grandmama), Chloe Grace Moretz (as Wednesday), Nick Kroll” (as Uncle Fester) and Oscar winner Allison Janney as their archenemy Margaux Needler. It’s set for an October 2019 premiere. No mention of Thing or Cousin Itt. It just wouldn’t be the same without Itt or ... uhh, them!

HOLLYWOOD — Jared Leto won an Oscar for playing a transsexual in “The Dallas Buyer’s Club” (2013) and scored big with “Suicide Squad,” playing the Joker. The film raked in $747 million at the box office. He next took on “Blade Runner 2049,” which barely recouped its cost with a $259 million gross. His most recent film was “The Outsider,” which he also produced for Netflix, with Emile Hirsch. Warners currently is expanding his “Joker” character from “Suicide Squad” into a major film. You may remember that Heath Ledger won an Oscar, posthumously, for playing the Joker in “The Dark Knight” (2008). Saoirse Ronan, who received Oscar nominations for “Atonement” (2007) at age 13, “Brooklyn” (2015) at 21 and last year, at 23, for “Lady Bird,” next will take on the title role in “Mary Queen of Scots,” with Margot Robbie (her last year’s Oscar competition) and former “Doctor Who” David Tennant. It will open Dec. 7. “Call Me by Your Name” Oscar nominee Timothee Chalamet is awaiting the release of Woody Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York,” with Selena Gomez and Jude Law, and currently is filming the American/Australian coproduction of “The King,” with Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Johnny Depp) and Robert Pattison. The film is an adaption of the Shakespearian plays “Henry IV” and “Henry V.” It will be interesting to see if that will translate for modern filmgoers. Brad Pitt is one of the producers.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old female who weighs 97 pounds and is 4 feet, 10 inches tall. I’m a non-smoker, non-drinker. I’m a mother of three, take no medications and have

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be Sheepish about asking questions and demanding answers. You not only gain needed information, but also respect for your steadfast search for the truth. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A money problem that shows up early in the week is expeditiously resolved by savvy Bovines who know how to turn a momentary financial lapse into a monetary gain. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good time to shed negative energy-draining forces and develop a positive approach to handling current, as well as upcoming, personal and/or professional situations. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your urge to do your best on a current task is commendable. But don’t let it become all-consuming. Spend some spiritually restorative time with those who love you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas to take your bows for your recent achievements and then go off to enjoy some fun times with your prides and joys. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A negative response to a well-intentioned suggestion could communicate a sense of distrust you might later find hard to refute. Think carefully before reacting. Dad died of pancreatic cancer at 81 after being in remission from prostate cancer for five years. On Mom’s side, her sister and aunt also had colon cancer. What screenings do I need? What screenings are needed for my two daugh-

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A pesky situation from the past recurs, albeit in an altered form. Deal with it promptly before it can go from merely irksome to decidedly troublesome. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Don’t wait too long to submit your proposals after giving them a last look-over. ters, ages 41 and 43? My daughters’ paternal grandmother died of breast cancer at 72. My other siblings, a 56-year-old brother and 68-year-old sister, are healthy. — G.T. ANSWER: With so many cancers in your family, I would strongly suggest a visit with a genetic counselor. The combination of colon, pancreatic and prostate cancer suggests a genetic syndrome, such as Lynch syndrome and BRCA 1 or 2, although your history isn’t classic need if you agree to do it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) That sense of self-doubt is so untypical of you, you should have no qualms in shaking it off. Remind yourself of all you’ve done and can do, and then do it again. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to charm others without sacrificing sincerity is what makes people want to follow your leadership.

for either of these. There are many less-common familial syndromes that increase the risk for various cancers, and we are gradually increasing our knowledge of them. Some of the cancers you mention are not associated with any known syndrome, such as Ewing sarcoma, a primary bone cancer, and dysgerminoma, a rare type of ovarian cancer. It’s possible that your family has just been very unfortunate. Still, I would recommend getting more knowledge about any genetic risk you may have. With this information, you can learn the right screening strategies for yourself, as well as obtain information that could potentially be valuable to your siblings and children. DEAR DR. ROACH: At first the doctors thought my wife had myasthenia gravis. After a series of tests, it was determined that she did not have that disease. However, the neu-

rologists now think she has mitochondrial myopathy. Can you tell us a little more about this disease, please? — R.R. A N S W E R : Mitochondrial myopathies are a group of disorders of the mitochondria, which are responsible for the production of energy inside the cell. Almost all cells contain mitochondria, but muscle cells are loaded with them. Since they do so much of the energy consumption, muscles are most affected. These disorders used to be considered rare, but it is now thought that 1 in 10,000 people may have one of these disorders (which makes it uncommon, but not rare). Mitochondria come almost completely from the mother, and as a result, a family history of muscle problems in the maternal line suggests this diagnosis. Mitochondrial myopathies range dramatically in severity. They are diag-

Lake Of The Prairies 61.5 sq. km.

ake of the Prairies is a large, long lake situated in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Originally, the lake was created as a water storage lake to manage the risk of flooding elsewhere. A great fishery has been an added bonus. Lake of the Prairies supports a high quality walleye fishery. In fact, Lake of the Prairies is now considered the second largest fishery in Manitoba, and one of the best walleye fisheries in Canada. Along with boat fishing, there are options for shore fishing as well. Calvin Daniels, from Yorkton This Week, says that many of the shore fishing options are located at lodges and resorts, though he has had some success fishing from the Roblin Bridge. Both the ice fishery and the open water season are very popular, and there are two annual derbies on the lake. During the summer, take advantage of the Russell Lions Prairie Classic, June 10 and 11, 2017. In the winter, the Assessippi Parkland Tourism puts on an ice fishing derby each February. Ice fishing for perch is very popular among experts and beginners alike. Perch can be caught in fairly shallow water with simple jigging techniques.Sometimes, the bigger perch will be down deeper, but not always. Carp are also present in Lake of the Prairies, though they tend to feed less in the winter, which can be challenging for ice anglers. If carp are what you’re after, try fishing in warmer water. Typically, they will be more active in warm water. Much like bass, they can be easier to catch when the water is warm.

important, too. “Structure plays a key role, and at Lake of the Prairies you have some great options.”

John Boyd, from For Your Walleyes Only, says that how you fish Lake of the Prairies will change depending on several factors. “How and what to use depends on the time of year and weather conditions,” he advises.

If it’s windy, while it may not be ideal conditions for anglers, it’s perfect for walleye. They’re far more active in wavy water, and They love minnows, shrimp and night in anything murky. “Gemini” (R) — A lush and moody neo-noir crime thriller, “Gemini” stars Lola Kirke as Jill, the personal assistant to impetuous Hollywood starlet Heather (Zoe Kravitz). Troubled relationships and poor decision-making put Heather in the crosshairs of lovers, business partners and admirers alike — and it’s Jill’s job to sort it all out. But then Heather is found dead by Jill’s borrowed gun, and a detective in charge of the case (John Cho) is following as she crisscrosses Los Angeles to solve the mystery and save her own neck, along the way exploring the blurred lines of employment and friendship, and the nature of masked ambitions. “Tyler Perry’s Acrimony” (R) — Can a woman who is misused at every turn find solace in a bitter and venomous revenge? Taraji P. Henson plays Melinda, one such woman. We watch as she details to a court-mandated therapist her relationship, then marriage and ultimately divorce from former husband Robert (Lyriq Bent), a gold-digging, two-timing inventor. After Robert is done spending Melinda’s inheritance, the relationship falls apart, and she is left in the dust for the other woman (Crystle Stewart). Adding insult to injury, he suddenly becomes successful, and flush with cash and condescension. It’s enough to drive a woman crazy. Henson is brilliantly sympathetic as

Taraji P. Henson in “Acrimony” a raving lunatic. She manages to keep the film above water for the most part, despite the overly moralistic tones and too-clever “chapter” plot devices. “The Endless” (NR) — Two brothers who escaped the clutches of a cult wilderness society end up back at the compound 10 years later after receiving a cryptic video message from one of its members. Their investigation, driven by a need for closure and some account of the supernatural events surrounding the group’s mission, uncovers strange and unexplainable phenomenon: middle-aged residents with no evidence of aging, multiple visible celestial bodies and an apparent portal in the sky, for starters. It’s written, directed, styled and starring cult filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, of the socio-scihorror “Spring,” and the hype is absolutely warranted, with stirring visuals and impeccable pacing. “In Darkness” (NR) — Natalie Dormer plays blind pianist Sofia, resident of an apartment

building with beautiful and mysterious upstairs neighbor Veronique (Emily Ratajkowski). Veronique takes a tumble off her balcony, and a tight-lipped Sofia is questioned: Does the lack of sight heighten her other senses, and could she have been an aural witness to murder? Jan Bijvoet supports as Veronique’s father, Milos Radic, a Serbian businessman and war criminal whose fate is entwined with Sofia’s. Does the “darkness” of the title refer to Sofia’s lack of sight, or the murkiness of her situation? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The article about not leaving pets outside for too long because of coyotes is silly. There’s an easy solution: Just install a dog door! They work great. My dog comes and goes at liberty, and I’ve never had any other creatures follow her inside. — Robert D., via email DEAR ROBERT: That is one solution, so long as you’re confident that your dog will be able to quickly run inside if a threat appears. Some dogs absolutely refuse to use a doggie door, which is annoying for owners who don’t need to monitor their dog’s every move (because they have a strong fence, and don’t live in an area that a coyote family has claimed as its hunting ground). However, in areas where coyotes have been spotted or where there have been reports of them taking small pets, owners really should be outside with their pet, especially small- to medium-sized dogs, as well as cats. Coyotes are far less likely to show themselves when a human is present. Some folks may wonder what all the to-do is about coyotes. In the Northeast, they have increased in numbers and are frequently sighted in suburban neighborhoods. In other areas, the nuisance animal may be a black bear or a cougar. In many cases, colonies of feral cats are a risk because they may attack housecats, potentially exposing them to rabies, FIV or feline leukemia. Additionally, all pets that regularly go outside — either accompanied or through a doggie door — need to be vaccinated and have any required municipal license and ID tags. A microchip implant also is a good idea, just in case they escape the yard. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I’m still obsessed with “The Vampire Diaries” and watch it whenever I just want to chill at home. The actress who plays the mayor looks so familiar. Can you tell me where else I might have seen her? — Hillary W., Fort Myers, Florida A: Susan Walters portrayed Mayor Carol Lockwood on the cult-hit vampire drama. She came into the public eye in a big way when she starred as Priscilla Presley in the TV miniseries “Elvis and Me” back in 1988, and her acting resume has since filled with dozens of stints on major TV shows and in movies. I spoke with her recently about her new Lifetime movie “Murdered at 17” (which premieres July

His humble origins may help account for the uncommon depth of compassion given to the human subjects of his art. • On July 11, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signs the Federal Aid Road Act. Since the mid19th century, the building and maintenance of roads had been seen as a state and local responsibility. • On July 13, 1930, France defeats Mexico 4-1 and the United States defeats Belgium 3-0 in the first-ever World Cup soccer matches, played simultaneously in host city Montevideo, Uruguay. The World Cup has since become the world’s most watched sporting event. • On July 9, 1947, in a ceremony at the Pentagon, Gen. For instance, did you know she played Jerry Seinfeld’s girlfriend in that infamous episode where he couldn’t remember her name and knew only that it rhymed with a female body part (her name was Dolores, by the way)? With “The Vampire Diaries,” Susan and her daughter would watch and text each other about it. “I totally loved watching the longing and the romance. I mean, I loved it. Even though I was there, I bought it all hook, line and sinker! So, obviously I was a little bummed when my character was killed off.” While working on “Murdered at 17,” one of the things Susan most enjoyed was the comradery with the rest of the cast and crew. She also loves that she gets to expand on the kinds of roles she plays as she gets older. “I will always love being an actor.

But I think when I was younger, I was more worried about how I looked and a thousand other things. There is one good thing about getting older: You don’t have the pressure of being that pretty girl anymore. Now I get to be the young, pretty girl’s mom. And that’s so much fun.” Q: I’ve been reading your coverage of the cancelation of “Lucifer.” Please tell me you have good news for us Lucifans! — Kellie D., via Twitter A: I do, Kellie. Netflix
