“Avengers: Infinity War” (PG-13) — The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has come out to save the day in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which stars every significant Marvel superhero of the past decade, including but not limited to: Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Hulk, SpiderMan, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Thor, Vision, Black Widow, War Machine, Falcon and Loki. They all come together to thwart Thanos as he attempts to collect the six Infinity Stones in order

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 23-year-old son is a bodybuilder, and much to my dismay, he takes steroids. I know he takes testosterone, and I don’t know what else. How will this affect him? — Anon. ANSWER: Testosterone has many bad long-term effects, and he really should stop it. As a resident, I took care of a seemingly very healthy, very muscular 30-year-old man with terrible heart failure due to a heart attack.

to exercise control over the universe. Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo helmed this ambitious project and did a surprisingly superb job of interconnecting the breadth of heroes and peripheral personalities. This movie grossed $1 billion in ELEVEN days in theaters and is on its way to the $2 billion mark. But even if you’ve already seen it, you still have something to look forward to in the DVD: deleted scenes, a gag reel, audio commentary track and five extended featurettes. “Furlough” (R) — Rookie prison guard Nicole (Tessa Thompson) gets offered a promotion if she can handle sassy, wily prisoner Joan (Melissa Leo) for an emergency furlough to visit her dying mother. A 36-hour quick Many similar reports have led to suspicion that steroids taken for bodybuilding increase risk of heart attack and even sudden death. There appear to be many other long-term effects, including neuropsychiatric effects of anger and aggressive behavior. They also may reduce sperm count and affect fertility. I don’t know what else he may be taking, but I would strongly urge him to evaluate all supplements carefully. DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a healthy female until I had an injury to my back. I experience pain and tingling in my right side, going down the back of my right leg. Sitting is especially painful, as is standing in one place for too

trip turns into quite the ordeal, with transportation mishaps, a surprise makeover and more. When it’s revealed that Joan has a daughter she has never met, the road trip changes lanes, going from pulling prison chains to tugging

on heartstrings. Whoopie Goldberg supports as Nicole’s overbearingly needy mother. “Shock and Awe” (R) — In the lead-up to the Iraqi War, a group of reporters with Knight Ridder questioned the George

W. Bush administration’s rationale for invading Iraq. This is their story. The principal players — editor John Walcott (Rob Reiner) and reporters Jonathan Landay (Woody Harrelson) and Warren Strobel (James Marsden), with an assist from veteran Joe Galloway (Tommy Lee Jones) — appear to be the only news outlet that deviated from the “weapons of mass destruction” excuse given by administration mouthpieces, and we are treated to an inside look into the grind of sourcing and corroboration that is good journalism. In the end, it’s not as sexy as it sounds, and even this incredibly talented group ended up with a film that’s lukewarm at best. “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” (R) — The 1970s English hard-core punk

long. Now the pain has started in my left side also. I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, physical therapy, epidural shots and pain pills. I also had two laminectomies (decompression surgery on the spinal canal) on L4/ L5 last year, with no relief from the pain. Upon seeing another neurosurgeon, I have been told that I have some large Tarlov cysts (1 cm). There does not seem to be a great amount of information about these on the internet, plus I am not sure what information out there is accurate. One doctor on the internet is all about having surgery on them. The neurosurgeon I am seeing does not want to do surgery just yet. He says that surgery does not always bring about pain

relief. Can you share some information about these Tarlov cysts and what can be done for the continued back and leg pain? Dealing with this for several years has caused me much emotional distress and depression. — F.H. ANSWER: Tarlov cysts, also called perineurial cysts, occur along the lining of the spinal cord and nerve roots. In one study, in 500 people with MRI scans, 23 had Tarlov cysts, but only five had any symptoms from them. In this study, the cysts were drained by a needle, which relieved the pain, although the pain usually came back as the cysts refilled with fluid. I agree with your neurosurgeon that surgery on

these does not guarantee success. Since you have had two surgeries and multiple types of therapies that haven’t worked, I can understand your frustration. It might be worth talking to the neurosurgeon about a trial of draining the cysts to see if that helps the symptoms. The booklet on back problems gives an overview of the causes and treatments for the mostcommon back maladies. scene comes alive as a group of youths stumbles upon a gathering of weirdo aliens and mistakes it for a vanguard party. There, Enn (Alex Sharp) meets a mysterious and beautiful teen named Zan (Elle Fanning), who breaks from her group to explore her fascination with Enn, imploring him to “take her to the punk.” It’s different in the way that movies that are meant to be “cool” are different, although I wouldn’t call it a classic cult fave in the making. Good weather helps with the harvest Harvest is proceeding quickly in the province, due to the recent hot and dry weather. Five per cent of the crop is now combined and nine per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. The five-year (2013-2017) average for this time of year is three per cent combined and four per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut. Seventy-one per cent of the fall rye, 24 per cent of the spring

wheat, 21 per cent of the field peas, 20 per cent of the lentils, three per cent of the durum and barley and one per cent of the spring wheat and oats are now in the bin. Six per cent of the canola has been swathed or prepared for straight-cutting. Harvest is most advanced in the southwest, where 10 per cent of the crop is combined. The southeastern region has eight per cent combined and the westcentral and east-central regions two per cent. Producers in the north have less than one per cent

of the crop in the bin, but many expect to be in the field soon. The majority of the province did not receive any rainfall last week, although the Nipawin area reported 19 mm of rain, the Spiritwood area 22 mm and the Meadow Lake area 29 mm. Any further rainfall will come too late for many of the crops still in the field, as they are rapidly drying down. Topsoil moisture conditions have significantly worsened with the hot and dry conditions. Across the province, topsoil

moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 31 per cent adequate, 44 per cent short and 25 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 24 per cent adequate, 38 per cent short and 38 per cent very short. Most crop damage this past week was due to lack of moisture, wind and extreme temperatures. Many southern and central areas of the province recorded temperatures well above 35 C for a number of days last week; some areas such as Moose Jaw

reported temperatures above 40 C. These high temperatures have caused crops to dry down rapidly, and yield and quality may be affected. There have been reports of stubble and combine fires in drier areas. Producers are busy combining, swathing crops and hauling bales. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at http://www.saskatchewan.ca/crop-report. Follow the 2018 Crop Report on Twitter at @SKAgriculture.

HOLLYWOOD — August 16 marks the 41st anniversary of the passing of “The King of Rock & Roll,” Elvis Presley. I remember early radio reports saying Elvis was suffering from colon cancer, but they were quickly eliminated from future coverage, which might explain the laundry list of drugs, as later reported, he used in relieving the pain of his worsening colon problems. He reportedly spent the last night of

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Katie asked Bill to babysit their son so that she could go on a date with Thorne. A broken Steffy admitted to Liam that she saw him propose to Hope. Later, Steffy decided to focus on her career by empowering the women at Forrester Creations to know their worth in the workplace. Bill called Katie for some parenting advice when Will wouldn’t listen. Bill interrupted Katie and Thorne’s romantic evening by bringing Will home early. Wyatt gave Liam an earful after asking him to be his best man. Brooke was horrified to learn that Steffy was bringing Taylor to Hope’s wedding. Steffy leaned on her father for support. Wait to See: Bridget returns for her half-sister’s wedding. DAYS OF OUR LIVES

his life in his room, with daughter, Lisa Marie, then took a large amount of drugs and went into his bathroom to die. He was just 42. Now, more than 40 years later, his wife, Priscilla Presley, has revealed in interviews, including in the HBO documentary, “Elvis Presley: The Searcher,” that she believes he planned his demise. Two years after the death of his longtime friend and road manager, Joe Esposito, new details surfaced. Allegedly, when Elvis died, his longtime manager, Colonel Tom Parker, sent Esposito to

Christel Khalil stars as “Lily” on “The Young and The Restless” Abigail was upset to find Chad and Gabi sharing a moment together. Paul accused Sonny of having an affair with Will. Meanwhile, Will exposed Ted’s scheme to Kate. Eve and Jennifer got into a showdown. Later, Eve encouraged Brady to forgive Victor. An angry Kate forced Ted to choose between her and the money. Paul confronted Will over his lies. A scorned Gabi continued to manipulate Abigail and Chad. Jennifer was tempted to confess everything to Eric. Tripp was furious

Elvis Presley Graceland to clean up all remaining drug bottles and instructed him to take away a suicide note written by Elvis, which emerged last December. It said, “I’m sick and tired of when Ciara invited Ben to move into the loft. Steve broke into Kayla’s phone to get answers. Kayla reluctantly agreed to help Stefan. Steve has a surprise for Adrienne. Kate pulled a gun on Ted. Wait to See: Adrienne confronts Bonnie for the first time. GENERAL HOSPITAL Scott finally apologized. Jason had a theory. Elizabeth was horrified. Josslyn grew increasingly annoyed. Kiki found herself on the edge. Alexis stated the facts and proceeded cautiously. Valentin was shocked. Sonny received an unexpected visitor. Sam was asked to do a favor. Franco was furious. Joss apologized to Sonny. Stella offered her condolences. Michael’s emotions got the best of him. Jordan felt betrayed. Elizabeth and Bobbie voiced their concerns. Sonny took Julian aside. Alexis received some terrible news. Nina lost her temper. my life, I need a long rest.” Elvis’ stepbrother, Rick Stanley, publicly admitted: “The handwritten note appears to be genuine to me. It’s a clear indication suicide was on his mind.” If you wait long enough, when the people who suppress the truth pass on, the truth comes out, as it has with Marilyn Monroe and JFK’s deaths. The Colonel preferred to have us believe Elvis was a drug addict rather than lose the insurance money for the gigs he couldn’t play. From the times I met Elvis, I don’t believe he was sick of his life, but could no longer endure the pain

and suffering from chronic constipation. Winning an Oscar for “Three Billboards” has made Sam Rockwell as hot as a bonfire. In addition to the upcoming “Blaze,” for actor/director Ethan Hawke, with Steve Zahn (out Sept. 7), and “Backseat,” with Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Steve Carell (Dec. 14), he also has “The Best of Enemies,” with Taraji P. Henson; “Blue Iguana,” with Ben Schwartz; animated comedy “The One and Only Ivan,” with Helen Mirren, Angelina Jolie, Bryan Cranston and Danny Devito; and “JoJo

Rabbit,” with Scarlett Johansson, awaiting release dates. Rockwell also will play Bob Fosse, who won an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy in the same year (for “Cabaret,” “Pippin” and “Liza With a Z”) to Michelle Williams’ Gwen Verdon — Lola in “Damn Yankees” (1958) and “Cocoon” 1985 — in an as-yet-untitled eight episode FX limited series produced by LinManuel Miranda. Fosse wrote and directed his autobiography, “All That Jazz” (1979), and as Robin Williams referenced in “The Birdcage,” “Fosse, Fosse, Fosse!”

began having second thoughts about her engagement to Nick. Victoria worried about Nikki spilling their family’s secrets to Nate. Phyllis chose Billy over her career. Kyle grew increasingly jealous of

Billy. Jack told Phyllis that he never got over her, but Phyllis still rejected him. Jack then agreed to take Ashley’s side in the war against Kyle. Wait to See: Sharon opens up to a new friend.

the perfect superfood for them. Ants and wasps love sugar, and wasps are attracted to fallen apples. I included those ingredients in my recipe for Ant Man’s Applesauce Pancakes with The Wasp’s Stinger Syrup, a breakfast that both big and little superheroes are sure to enjoy! My family and I LOVE Marvel Comics, television shows and movies. Evidently, the comic-book “geek” gene is hereditary, because my husband, daughter and granddaughter all can recite the history of Marvel comic-book heroes. It’s a light-hearted side of my typically serious husband that provides me with a glimpse of what he was like as a little boy. Recently, we had a great time at the movies seeing the funny, actionpacked adventures of “Ant Man and the Wasp.” I had a few unanswered questions about superheroes, so I talked to an authority on all things Marvel Comics, C.B. Cebulski, the new editor-in-chief. C.B. has been a worldtraveler from an early age. He spent his summers as a child visiting relatives in Sweden and Greece. As part of his editorial duties for Marvel Comics, he visits comic-book artists and writers in Asia, Europe and around the U.S. He’s also well-known for his video reviews featuring restaurant dishes that he’s discovered during his travels. Since I’m also a foodie, I wondered, What do Superheroes like to eat? Fortunately, C.B. has given a lot of thought to my question. The following is a synopsis of our

lively conversation and a few of C.B.’s suggestions for “Superfoods” that have been featured in some of our favorite Marvel superheroes movies: IRON MAN/TONY STARK In the Iron Man and Avengers movies, there’s always some memorable dialogue about food. According to C.B., Stark created Iron Man because of his heart condition, so typically he eats a healthy diet. However, there are a few scenes where Stark delves into unusual food choices, from eating doughnuts while sitting inside the iconic Randy’s Doughnuts sign to a celebratory visit to a shawarma restaurant with the other Avengers after saving the world. THOR C.B. explained that Odinson (often called “The Mighty Thor”) is based on the thunder god of Norse mythology, and he has an unbridled appetite. His motto seems to be “eat first, ask questions later.” C.B. would serve Thor hunks of roasted meats, smoked fish and a large turkey drumstick. He also has a fondness for coffee!

BLACK PANTHER In its 1966 debut, Black Panther’s kingdom, the mystical land of Wakanda, was inspired by the people and food of the Congo. Since 2016, award-winning author Te-Nehia Coates has been writing the storylines for the Black Panther comic and movie. He attributes his inspiration for Wakanda to Ethiopia and its victory over the Italian army and any attempts at colonization. Ethiopian dishes are typically served in the form of a stew with meat and vegetables, and served on top of a large flatbread called “injera,” which is made from a fermented grain called teff. ANT MAN and THE WASP Scott Lang, aka Ant Man, and his daughter Cassie have a close, playful bond. C.B. thought that pancakes would be

ANT MAN’S APPLESAUCE PANCAKES •2 cups flour, all-purpose or whole-wheat white •1 tablespoon baking powder •1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/4 teaspoon nutmeg •1/4 teaspoon salt •2-1/2 tablespoons light brown sugar •2 eggs •1-1/2 cups milk, plus more as needed •2 tablespoon oil •1/2 cup cinnamon applesauce Mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and brown sugar together in a large mixing bowl. Make a “well” or a hole in the center. Add eggs, milk, oil and applesauce to the depression in the center of the flour mixture. Stir with whisk or fork until combined. If the mixture seems too thick, add a little more milk until thinned out enough. Pour 1/4 cup onto a heat-

ed griddle or large, heavy skillet. When bubbles form on the pancake, flip over and cook other side until golden brown. Serve with The Wasp Stinger Syrup recipe below. Makes about 2 dozen pancakes. THE WASP’S STINGER SYRUP The warm spices in this recipe add a little “sting” that keeps the syrup from being overly sweet while enhancing the cinnamon flavor. •1/2 cup white sugar •1/2 cup light brown sugar •2 tablespoons all-purpose flour •1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon •1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg •1/4 teaspoon ground ginger •1 teaspoon vanilla •1 cup water

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla and water. Bring mixture to a boil on medium-high heat, stirring often. Continue to boil and stir until mixture thickens to syrup consistency. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Pour syrup over applesauce pancake. Serve immediately. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty might upset some people, but you inevitably win more admirers for having the courage to tell the truth when others are more likely to scramble for cover. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your efforts to defend your project begin to show favorable results. You should soon be able to win over even the most determined detractors who had lined up against it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You win praise for your selfless efforts in a very difficult situation. But be careful not to allow your generous nature to be exploited by those who have their own agenda. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A trusted col-

league sheds light on a recent spate of puzzling workplace situations. This should give you the information you need to bring to your superior’s attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A shift in workplace management could be helpful for talented Leos and Leonas who have been waiting to have their accomplishments rewarded by receptive leadership. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding between you and someone you care for should be corrected immediately. This relationship is too important to lose over a bruised ego. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A welcome piece of good news helps clear the air in a family sit-

uation. A job-related incident also eases as more information provides a clearer focus on the problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Quick action to heal bruised feelings pays off in a big way. Now you’ll be able to move forward with your plans without that problem holding you back. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your creativity combined with a positive attitude should give you a considerable edge in finding a way to get around the negativity you’ve run into. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) That sudden streak of stubbornness could cause some problems. Try to be more open to helpful suggestions and more flexible in making needed changes. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Now that that special relationship appears to be well and truly restored, you can spend more time dealing with those long-needed workplace changes. PISCES (February 19 to

Did you know? The next time symptoms of a cold appear could be well worth it to reach for elderberry syrup, lozenges or supplements. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, elderberry, or elder, has been used for centuries to treat various ailments. Elderberry can be applied to the skin to relieve wounds, and it also is effective when taken orally to treat respiratory illnesses like cold and flu. Some evidence suggests that elder-

berry may help reduce swelling in the mucus membranes and sinuses to help relieve nasal congestion. WebMD says elderberry may help boost the immune system and reduce inflammation to relieve pain throughout the body. Some people also rely on elderberry for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and as a laxative. Even though elderberry is an all-natural alternative to medicine, its use should be discussed with a doctor to ensure no contraindications.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Can you tell me what’s up with the “Roseanne” spinoff? Is ABC moving forward with it? — Billy T., via email A: The cast of “Roseanne,” excluding Roseanne Barr, will be back with “The Conners” starting Tuesday, Oct. 16, at

• It was British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who made the following sage observation: “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” • There are lots of sports fans out there, and a lot of sports to enjoy: football, basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey ... olive oil wrestling? OK, maybe there aren’t a lot of oiled wrestling events here in America, but in Turkey it’s the national sport. Kirkpinar, as it’s known there, has been popular since the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish town of Edirne has been hosting the annual tournament since 1361. • If you do much printing, you might not be surprised to learn that if you figure out the cost by volume, printer ink costs far more than Dom Perignon champagne or Chanel No. 5 perfume. • The name of Alcatraz Island — famed location of a high-security prison that’s now a tourist attraction — comes from the Spanish “Isla de los Alcatraces,” or “Island of Pelicans.” • The murre, a bird found in the Arctic, actually dives into the water and swims to catch the small fish that comprise its diet. Interestingly, its eggs

8/7c, including series stars John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf. We’ve been given a hint as to what we can expect with the reimagining/spinoff with the show’s logline: “After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. ... This iconic family -- Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. — grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in workingclass America. Through

aren’t like those of any other bird in the world: The whites are blue, not white, and the yolks are bright red. • Those who study such things claim that the oceans eventually will dry up — in about a billion years or so. • The Transportation Security Administration banned cigarette lighters on carry-on luggage between 2005 and 2007. During that time, TSA screeners confiscated 22,978 lighters “every day”. Safe disposal of those lighters cost the taxpayers approximately $4 million every year. Thought for the Day: “In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it. The last is much the worst.” — Oscar Wilde

it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-medowns, the breakdowns ... with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.” Q: Can you tell me what’s going on with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”? I heard they are planning to have a new love interest for Rebecca Bunch. — Callie F., via Twitter A: Well ... kinda. “Pitch Perfect” star Skylar Astin has signed on to the show’s final season, and although the actor is different, the character he’s portraying is a familiar one: Rebecca’s boyfriend from the first season, Greg. They decided to recast Greg, who was originally played by Santino Fontana, to go in a different direction with the character. (New Yorkbased Santino had asked

too much. It will be a great statement on how our perception of people changes. Greg is a barometer of how people’s perceptions change. It will have been two years since Rebecca’s seen him.” READERS: Last week I reported on the “Deadwood” movie that HBO is finally producing to wrap up all of those loose ends that will have been 13 years in the making since the series’ cancellation in 2006. Well, we “Timeless” fans won’t have long to wait either to see how the heck Lucy (Abigail Spencer) and Wyatt (Matt Lanter) are going to save Rufus (Malcolm Barrett). Executive producers Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke announced that NBC has ordered a twohour movie, which will

Rachel Bloom to be let go at the end of the first season/beginning of the second because it didn’t work with his schedule.) Series creator and star Rachel Bloom said that the show itself won’t ignore the recast, saying: “We don’t want to spoil it

Agriculture is important to economy By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The harvest season is under way, and that makes it an important time not just for farmers, but for the city of Yorkton, because the farm sector is crucial to the city economy. “Over 60 city businesses are directly involved in servicing the area’s farming and ranching community,” said Juanita Polegi, Executive Director with the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce. “In turn, the farmers and ranchers support these and hundreds of other city businesses. “This support is appreciated.” Polegi said in terms of local business activity the influence of agriculture is obvious. “Hundreds of semis travel to Yorkton daily to deliver grain to the elevators, processing plants and crushing plants,” she noted. “Livestock arrives for the weekly sale at the stock yards. “Raw products are processed into food products such as wieners and bacon; oatmeal flakes; and flaxseed oil. “Short line farm machinery manufacturing companies are also cornerstones of the city’s economy.” Yorkton Mayor Bob

The harvest season is important to the local economy, and to farmers like these in the field west of the city of Yorkton. Maloney said agriculture was why the community was initially created, and that is essentially true of communities across the Canadian Prairies. “For a smaller community like Yorkton farming has always been important,” he said. Maloney added, the

city has seen some manufacturing develop, but it too is usually related to agriculture. Maloney noted agriculture is a billion dollar economic generator nationally in Canada and that is reflected locally. “It’s a big number local. That big number

2

contributes immeasurably to Yorkton,” he said. Maloney said there is a long list of major business in Yorkton tied specifically to farming; from Morris Industries and Leon’s Manufacturing, to Harvest Meats, the canola crushing facilities and TA Foods.

Maloney said there are always contractors on-site at the canola crushing plants, electricians, plumbers and other tradesmen who then “contribute to the overall economy.” Maloney said when you look at a business such as TA Foods

“they’re selling product around the world,” a product that started out on area farms. And it is that farm production which leads to a company such as Grain Millers undertaking a $100 million expansion in order to meet demand Continued on Page A11

agriculture Continued from Page A10 for oats, noted the Mayor. Polegi said agriculture will remain important locally because of what it means on a broader world scale. “It’s estimated that by 2050, the world will need 60 per cent more food than it did in 2012,” she said. “The farmers and ranchers in the Yorkton area will contribute to

filling that demand. “They will continue to adopt new technologies that will make their production practices more efficient enabling them to produce more. “They will continue to strive to be ‘stewards of the land’ as healthy soils respond to new technology. “And, Canada ranks

number one in global food safety performance.” As farmers strive to produce the needed food then spend money locally. “The spin-offs are huge,” said Maloney.“Farmers are buying seed and fuel and fertilizer and machinery.”

It is because of those farm needs that a region al hub such as Yorkton sees dealerships for most major machinery brands. Maloney said to appreciate the scope of farming people only need to get off the highways a little and out into the country “to see the infrastructure in the fields; tractors, combines, fuel trucks.” With a new four-wheel

drive tractor, or a combine easily selling for $500,000-plus, it is easy to see the investment, and how that investment has an impact on the local economy, he said. Polegi said the Chamber has long recognized the importance of farming in the region and will continue to be supportive of the sector. “As per the consti-

A11

tution of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, one of the Chamber’s objectives is ‘the promotion of agriculture’,” she said. “As the only specific industry named in the constitution, agriculture played an integral role to the economic well-being of Yorkton and area in 1898 and continues to do so today.”

P&H opens new facility, plans for more By Devin Wilger Staff Writer It opened later than they wanted, but the new Parrish and Heinbecker fertilizer blending facility just outside of Yorkton, north on Highway 9. The shed has the capacity to hold about 6,000 tonnes of fertilizer, with multiple separations to get a wide range of blends for farmers. Justin Watson, vice president of crop inputs Canada with Parrish and Heinbecker, said that part of the reason why the facility took a while to get together because of an ambitious construction plan across western Canada. There are about 10 similar facilities that have opened across the province. “It got pushed back about a year or so because you are coordinating all of these different events at the same time.”

They wanted to be able to offer customers the ability to buy custom fertilizer blends, and the new facility allows that. The building opens today, but that’s far from the end of the plans for the site. Right now it’s near rail, but it will soon get tied into the rail system, to allow them to expand the number of products they offer and the amount of volume they can handle, Watson said. The fertilizer shed is also merely the first building. Watson notes that the next phase of the project will see the construction of a new chemical shed. They also want to set up a way for farmers to buy seed at the same site. It’s currently not very far along, though earth is moving at the site, but the plan is to have a one stop shop for farmers as they plan their crop year, Watson explains. “Basically this is going to be a full crop input campus.”

Harvest final step in business of farming Harvest is always a busy season on the farm for obvious reasons. Mother Nature only provides a limited window in which conditions are right to get the annual crop from the field to the bin and producers around the local region, and in fact across North America put in long hours in the field ensuring the crop is harvested. That farmers are committed to harvest is important for many reasons, starting with trying to keep our world fed. That has always been an important aspect of the work farmers do, and the need for food grows annually. “It’s estimated that by 2050, the world will need 60 per cent more food than it did in 2012,”said Juanita Polegi, Executive Director with the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce in a story in this edition. That is massive growth, and harvest needs to go smoothly in major grain growing areas, transportation systems have to get that product to where it is needed and countries need the financial resources to pay for the grain, all three things

weed and i n s e c t infestations, the machinery to do the work, the fuel, the bins to store the harvested grain, and the list goes on. T h e total costs to plant an acre of canola are pegged at just over $400 an acre, suggests numbers published online by Manitoba Agriculture. Hard spring wheat is only slightly less at $364 per acre. Numbers in Saskatchewan would be similar.

Calvin Daniels working smoothly to ensure everyone on the planet can go to bed without being hungry. The idea of everyone having money to buy food, the individual family for the table, a country to import what is needed, sometimes gets lost to people. But reasonable wealth around the world is important, if far from achieved. The local grain producer has to turn a profit when selling his grain, or else he can’t stay in business. And farming today and perhaps always, is very much a business – big business. The harvest is actually the culmination of the business cycle in a way. Over the spring and summer months the farmer has invested heavily in the crops he is growing. The costs of production are varied and significant. There is the cost of the seed that goes in the ground, the fertilizer to help it grow, the crop protection products which help a crop grow through

Doing some simple math a quarter section, a typical field measurement, contains 160 acres. To plant the quarter to canola would mean investing $64,000 in production. Much of that money flowing through the regional economy as the farmer buys the seed, fertilizer, expertise, machinery and other things needed to grow the crop. That is significant to a local economy.

Norquay couple take major award By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers Award for 2018 was presented to Jordan and Jennifer Lindgren of Norquay at the Farm Progress Show held in Regina in June. “That was pretty darned exciting. The other nominees were pretty incredible,” said Jennifer Lindgren. Jennifer said it was an intense time in Regina, from the interviews as a finalist, to sitting through presentations awaiting the results to be announced. “Our stomachs were in knots,” she said. And when their names were announced thee motions really came out. “Everybody was crying, even the kids,” she said. “It was amazing.” The Lindgrens now advance to the national level, heading to Winnipeg in November for five intense days of judging at the event. The ‘Outstanding Young Farmers Award’ is an annual event held in the province as part of Canada’s Farm Progress Show which recognizes young farmers who demonstrate excellence in their profession. The program seeks to recognize young farmers who are less than 49 years of age, make the majority of farm management decisions, and derive a minimum of two-thirds gross revenue from farming. Each year an honouree is selected to represent each of the seven regions across Canada. These seven honourees are then recognized for their achievements at the National Outstanding Young Farmers event.

On the farm

Prior to the final judging in June Yorkton This Week visited with the

Lindgrens at their farm. Jordan said being a farmer was always what he planned. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” he told Yorkton This Week during an interview recently at the couple’s kitchen table. Jennifer was not quite as focused on being a farmer, but agriculture was certainly her area of keenest interest. “I went to the school of agriculture,” she said, adding she was thinking of a job in the sector if not specifically running a farm. But then the pair met, married, and began to farm. The couple started out farming with Jordan’s father and uncle, buying some land of their own, and working in what evolved into a three-way partnership. Over time Jordan had assumed the management role, and then about eight years ago the couple bought out Jordan’s father and uncle. “We had to buy everything,” said Jordan, noting his father and uncle deserved to be paid for what they had built up through their partnership of near four decades. “It’s what they had worked their whole entire lives for. They deserved getting the most they could out of all their hard work.” There was never any hesitation to buy out the farm, but it took planning. There were kitchen table discussions regarding succession, and Jordan and Jennifer were helped out by having some of their own land and equipment to soften the impact of taking over. “We were preparing for it … We had built up to where we were able to do it,” said Jennifer. The move increased the couple’s debt load, but Jordan said debt is part

Farmers for 2018, winning the award in Regina earlier this summer. of farming these days. If someone is going to farm“debt is going to be part of it,” he said. “If there’s no risk, there’s no reward,”added Jennifer. Without a base, Jordan said starting to farm today would be very difficult. “Trying to start up (from scratch) is almost impossible with the costs that are involved,” he said. Jennifer worked off the farm in the early years of their marriage, but as the farm grew, and their family arrived – they have four children ages eight to 12 – she evolved to stay home and be an active member of the team. Jordan said having her on the farm where she can bring meals to the field is a huge asset. He said having a hot, home-cooked meal is something his employees look forward to during the busy seeding and harvesting seasons, the time of sharing a meal being a key element of building camaraderie. Keeping workers happy is important on an operation where they

employ two full-time and four seasonal people get all the work done. Jordan said he tries to create a working atmosphere where he’d want to work himself, if he were not farming. The workers are looked at almost as extended family. “The kids think of them as uncles,” said Jennifer. Jordan said he needs good workers because his focus is on dealing with breakdowns, planning crop sales, doing the management that increasingly has his attention on a computer screen rather than the

steering wheel of a tractor. “As it is 25 per cent of my time is in the office,” he said, adding he probably should be on the computer even more than he is. “You’re always trying to run scenarios in your mind,” he said. Jordan said he still enjoys time on the tractor the most, but that is something generally left to others. “It’s working the land and being hands-on…But my phone never stops,’ he said. The couple also have their children

involved, including out in the field at meal time. “Having the kids out there they get a feel for farming,” said Jordan, adding meals in the field are certainly one of his best memories from his own childhood. Jennifer said while the farm is now large, and most certainly a business, they have made it a priority to focus on family too. “We decided a long time ago it would be apriority to us, to have the kids involved,” she said. It’s not always easy to keep the family farm philosophy and the business realities separate, but the couple tries. “It does get blurred,” said Jennifer. But, they already make sure the children are aware that it is a family farm at heart. “Everybody in the family knows we are in this together,” said Jordan. And it takes all hands on-deck to operate a farm where 11,500 acres is seeded annually. Jordan’s father “is still out there all the time,” said Jennifer with a smile, adding his uncle still plays a role too. At times the elder pair are a sounding board for Jordan, although they have not seen eye-to-eye on everything through the years.

Harvest well under way in SK. Harvest is proceeding quickly in the province, due to the recent hot and dry weather. Seventy-one per cent of the fall rye, 24 per cent of the spring wheat, 21 per cent of the field peas, 20 per cent of the lentils, three per cent of the durum and barley and one per cent of the spring wheat and oats are now in the bin. Six per cent of the canola has been swathed or prepared for straight-cutting. Harvest is most advanced in the southwest, where 10 per cent of the crop is combined. The southeastern region has eight per cent combined and the west-central and east-central regions two per cent. Producers in the north have less than one per cent of the crop in the bin, but many expect to be in the field soon. Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 31 per cent adequate, 44 per cent short and 25 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 24 per cent adequate, 38 per cent short and 38 per cent very short. Most crop damage this past week was due to lack of moisture, wind and extreme temperatures. Many southern and central areas of the province recorded temperatures well above 35 C for a number of days last week; some areas such as Moose Jaw reported temperatures above 40 C. These high temperatures have caused crops to dry down rapidly, and yield and quality may be affected. There have been reports of stubble and combine fires in drier areas. Producers are busy combining, swathing crops and hauling bales. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at http://www.saskatchewan.ca/ crop-report. Farmers take unique field trip By Sean Mott Staff Writer Dozens of farmers and agricultural experts loaded onto bleachers at the the Yorkton Research farm earlier this summer. They got comfortable in their seats as tractors and trucks began to pull away, dragging the bleachers with them. Three sets of traveling risers rolled across the fields south of of Yorkton. It was an image worthy of a Mad Max movie. The mobile bleachers stopped at certain sections of the research farm. Mike Hall, Research Manager with the East Central Research Foundation (ECRF), and other specialists hopped out of the stands to explain unique crops and growing tech-

niques. They fielded questions from visitors before climbing back onto their improvised traveling caravan and moving on to the next section. This guided tour through agricultural ingenuity was the sixth annual research farm field day. The event, organized through a partnership with ECRF and Parkland College, invited horticulture enthusiasts to see, feel, and smell the developments at Yorkton’s research farm on Jul. 12. “People today saw a number of experiments in cereal,” Hall said. “We had some specialty crops as well, including forage corn and flax and quinoa.” Hall was excited to share the research farm’s experiments with protein

research farm focuses on addressing that problem. “Producers are interested in ways to...increase protein in our wheat,” he

said. “We showed some strategies today and weighed the pluses and minuses.” The research farm is a

joint effort from ECRF and Parkland College. They combined forces six years ago and secured the land from the city of Yorkton. “They lease it to us for very little,” Hall said. “We conduct research on that land.” The supergroup began the research farm field day in 2013. Hall said it provides an important educational tool to farmers. “Part of our mandate is to get information out to the agriculture industry,” he said. “We’re a place for industry [people] to go if they’ve got some questions.” Anyone interested in learning more about the research farm can visit www.ecrf.ca.

Chinese market large and lucrative for Canada By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer China is a huge market in terms of potential trade exports. That potential has already been realized by a number of Yorkton and area businesses including Buckle Great Northern Beef Corp., who hosted a visit from Richard Choi, chief representative of the Saskatchewan Trade and Investment Office China, based in Shanghai. For Choi, working in promoting business and trade in China is a natural. Born in China, but growing up and being educated in Canada, he has worked extensively in the business field including time with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in China, before taking the position with the Saskatchewan office. Choi said having an office in Shanghai is a good step in opening doors to the massive market of the city, and the country, adding Canadian business has to understand going in it is a different world there in terms of how one carries out business. “The way they do business over there is very different from how we do business here,” he said, adding he believes the

basis for business in China “comes from the history and culture of the country.” It’s important that Canadian business understand at least some of that history. For example, “China only opened to the world in 1978,” reminded Choi. “China has only 40 years (experience in trading).” That limited timeframe in international dealings compared to a country such as Canada is significant, he said. “They’ve had to learn a lot of things from the west.” While there are hurdles to be cleared to trade into China, the sheer scale of the market is enticing. Choi pointed just to the city of Shanghai with its population of 32 million.

“That’s only two million short of the total population of Canada,” he noted. Choi added there is a significant middle class in Shanghai and that is the important sector they want to access, people with a growing income they are willing to spend for quality imported products such as Buckle Great Northern Beef, or honey from Wendell Estate Honey at MacNutt, or flax oil from TA Foods here in the city. So the market is there. “It’s very big and very complicated,” he said, adding the opportunities in Shanghai do exist “as long as you know what you’re doing.” That is where the trade office and Canada’s reputation can help.

“There’s still some stuff they’re set in their mindset,” he said, adding when he was first taking over a greater portion of the decision making there were things “they felt that they know what would work best.” He said that was just the process of viewpoints based in different eras coming together. Today, Jordan said he still appreciates being able to bounce things off the pair. “To have that experience available when I’m thinking about doing things, those guys have seen more things in their lives than I have,” he said. As for cropping choices Jordan has kept that part of the operation rather straight forward, growing wheat and canola in rotation. For the wheat they shoot for an average of 70 bushels an acre, with a crop that dips below 65 seen as disappointing.

“To have that experience available when I’m thinking about doing things, those guys have seen more things in their lives than I have.” —Jordan Lindgren on having his father and uncle to turn to for advice Over the years Jordan said they have tried other crops, most recently soybeans, but so far wheat and canola on their varied land conditions do best under the input regime they use. “We’re definitely testing the limits,” he said, adding he is a believer in fertilizing to the maximums to realize the generic potential of the varieties they grow.

The Lindgrens also see a role in helping share information with other farmers. They do that by partnering with local agriculture distributors to host the ‘Field of Dreams’ tour that is held annually on their farm, which is an opportunity to share trial results from previous years and showcase the current trials that are focused on new genetics,

applications and variable fertilizer rates. And this year they also plan to be a part of educating the next generation as they incorporate a ‘Food Farm’ into their operation which is an interactive tour geared at educating Grade 3 and 4 students on agriculture. So what of the Outstanding Young Farmer nomination? Jordan said the nomination came as a surprise when they were asked if they would allow their names to be submitted. “We just said we’d be honoured,” he replied, admitting they were left to ponder if they were worthy of the nomination. But then the process of reviewing their farm’s history to fill out additional forms began, and they came to recognize they have accomplished a lot since taking over the farm from his father and uncle who had farmed together for 40-years. Reflection is not always easy amid the “bustle” of farming day-to-day, said Jordan. Jennifer added, as they delved into the records, while taking time to do, it was a good process in terms of reflecting on their farm to-date and setting a few new goals moving forward.

What’s in your refrigerator right now? Mine is in a bit of disarray with the basics — milk, eggs, yogurt, condiments, a few nondescript leftovers, half a watermelon and wilting arugula. Now, if you open Nancy Nyberg’s fridge door in Naperville, Illinois, you eye her delectable homemade fudge sauce in neatly stacked jars in the back corner. Any day, month or year. No wonder her four grandkids think she is the sweetest grandmother ever. Her signature “Heavenly Hot Fudge Sauce,” which she has been making for 20 years, is now affectionately renamed “Mormor’s Hot Fudge” (“mormor” is Swedish for “grandmother”). Granddaughter Paige, 9, makes it with Nancy to sell annually at a country fair by their summer place in Bethany Beach, Michigan. “She learns how to measure, pour and stir until the sauce is ‘just right,’” says Nancy. There’s a bit of finance that goes into the mix, too. “We shop together and figure out how much each jar should sell for to cover costs, with enough left over to give to a nonprofit project. We have fun learning and cooking together. It’s really more about the relationship-building with my granddaughter than the fudge sauce,” she says. Here’s the recipe to

Serve banana coffee cake with a twist Waiting for bananas to ripen for baking can try anyone’s patience. Laurie McNamara, author of “Simply Scratch: 120 Wholesome Homemade Recipes Made Easy” (Avery), admits she doesn’t have the patience for bananas to brown and that roasting them in the oven speeds up the process. That process is on display in McNamara’s recipe for “Roasted Banana Coffee Cake,” which makes a great addition to breakfast tables and brunches. ROASTED BANANA COFFEE CAKE Serves 8 •8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus 1 tablespoon at room temperature for the pan

•2 tablespoons granulated sugar •2 bananas •3⁄4 cup chopped pecans •3 tablespoons dark brown sugar •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1-1⁄2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon baking soda •1 teaspoon baking powder •1⁄4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg •1 cup granulated sugar •2 large eggs, lightly beaten •1⁄4 cup sour cream •1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan with the 1 table-

utes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Beat until incorporated. With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the flour mixture and mix until just combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the pecan topping. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few crumbs attached. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

spoon room temperature butter and dust with the granulated sugar and tip out any excess. Place the bananas on a small rimmed baking sheet and roast for 15 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool. In a small bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside. Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium bowl. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on low speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 min-

What are healthy fats and how to get them (NC) — Fats are essential for good health and an important part of any diet. Studies show that the right kinds can help maximize your metabolism, protect against heart disease, speed nutrients through your body and even improve vitamin intake. But not all fats are the same, so it’s important to choose the right type. In popular terminology, the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are what most people refer to as healthy fats. However, a better definition of healthy fats is relatively unprocessed fats from whole foods. On the other hand, unhealthy fats are typically those that are industrially produced and nonperishable. Monounsaturated fats are considered beneficial as they help to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke while also helping to manage weight. Healthy fats can be found in foods like olive oil, avocados and nuts like almonds, pistachios, cashews, pecans and hazelnuts. Polyunsaturated fats, which are found in foods like walnuts, flax seeds and fish, are the other good fats to consider adding to your diet. Like monounsaturated fats, these also help with weight management by controlling blood sugar and help to reduce bad cholesterol levels. Polyunsaturated fats include omega-3 and omega-6 fats, essential fatty acids required for proper brain function and cell growth. Our bodies can’t produce these healthy fats, so we need to make sure we’re getting enough from the foods we eat. To incorporate more into your diet, try adding a handful of nuts to a salad lunch or part of an avocado to your morning shake. If you’re not getting enough essential fatty acids in your diet, consider an omega supplement. You can find supplements and snacks rich in healthy fats at your local Canadian Health Food Association member health food store. Find one near you online at chfa.ca.

The warning signs of a heart attack An umbrella term that encompasses various conditions, cardiovascular disease, or CVD, is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of 17.7 million people across the globe every year, accounting for 31 percent of all deaths worldwide. If CVD statistics are alarming, then it’s important to note that many premature deaths related to CVD can be prevented. While the WHO notes that four out of five CVD deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes, men and women who learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack may be able to get help before things escalate. In fact, the American Heart Association notes that many heart attacks begin slowly with mild pain or discomfort. By paying attention to their bodies and learning to recognize these warning signs, men and women may be able to get help before heart attacks claim their lives. • Chest discomfort: Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back is a telltale sign of heart attack. The discomfort may feel like pressure in the chest, squeezing, fullness, or pain. • Discomfort in the upper body: Discomfort in

areas of the upper body that are not the chest also may be a warning sign of heart attack. The AHA notes that such discomfort or pain may occur in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. • Shortness of breath: Shortness of breath may be an early warning sign of heart problems. The AHA notes that this may or may not be accompanied by discomfort in the chest. • Additional signs: The AHA notes that some people suffering from a heart attack may break out in a cold sweat, experience nausea or begin to feel lightheaded. Are symptoms different for men and women? Symptoms of heart attack tend to be different for men and women. While the most common symptom for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort, women are more likely than men to experience additional symptoms. According to the AHA, women are more likely than men to experience shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and pain in their backs or jaws. The AHA urges fast action by anyone who suspects they or a loved one are suffering a heart attack. Acting quickly can save lives and help men and women avoid joining the nearly 18 million people who succumb to cardiovascular disease each year.

Early signs of dementia (NC) — It’s normal to forget some things as we get older. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, almost 40 per cent of people over age 65 experience some type of memory loss. Dementia and related conditions like Alzheimer’s disease are more than just forgetfulness. Dementia is a loss of mental function that affects daily activities. It is caused by a loss of cells in the brain and the breakdown of important nerve connections. Since early diagnosis may help to slow the progression of the condition, it’s essential to know when to see your doctor. Use these signs to understand if what you or a relative is experiencing is age-related or something more. The symptoms below are only signs, so if you have doubts see your physician. Memory loss. This symptom becomes a warning sign when it affects your everyday life, like if you’re forgetting things often or struggling to retain new information. Behavioural changes. Severe mood swings can

be a sign, as well as changes to your personality, or if you are feeling paranoid and threatened. Judgment and reasoning problems. This can be something as simple as wearing heavier clothing on a warm day, or a more serious issue like not realizing a medical problem needs attention. Difficulty with abstract thinking — like not understanding what numbers mean on a calculator or how they’re used — can also be cause for concern.

TOP 10 REASONS to advertise frequently

ADVERTISING IS

KEY

YORKTON THIS

WEEK

1. People may not need your product or service today, but they may need it tomorrow. 2. Frequency builds trust. 3. Frequent advertising adds credibility to your message. 4. When an ad is seen frequently, it gets the consumer yearning for your service and they will take action to buy it. 5. Advertising frequently helps put your name out in front of the competition’s. 6. Frequency is the best way to get lower advertising rates. 7. Advertising frequently is a lot like repeatedly inviting a friend to come see you. One day, they are bound to visit! 8. Frequent advertising helps you build a steady source of incoming sales. 9. Out of sight, out of mind. 10. You make more money when you do! It’s plain and simple.

Trouble communicating. It’s okay if you occasionally can’t find the right words, but if you notice yourself needing to frequently pause or find substitutions when searching for words, this could be an early warning sign of dementia. The federal government is working on a national dementia strategy that will complement existing initiatives to promote awareness, reduce stigma and support those affected and is committed to helping improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their caregivers.

Indulge in homemade donuts Donuts are a guilty pleasure for many people. Though they might not make nutritionists smile, donuts are a beloved indulgence. People who love donuts may find that love reaches a new level after they try their hands at the following recipe for “Cookies and Cream Donuts” from Heather Saffer’s “Crazy Easy Vegan Desserts” (Sterling Epicure).

Cookies and Cream Donuts Makes 6 donuts •1-1⁄2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar •1 cup gluten-free flour •1⁄4 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder •1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda •Pinch of salt •1⁄2 cup granulated sugar •1⁄4 cup unsweetened applesauce

extract •12 vegan crunchy chocolate cookies, crushed •1 - 12-ounce jar Dollop Gourmet •Madagascar Vanilla vegan frosting •Milk

•2 teaspoons coconut oil, melted •1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a donut pan with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the vinegar into a 1⁄2 cup measure. Add enough milk to come to the brim. Let sit until slightly

thickened, 5 to 10 minutes. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, applesauce, coconut oil, and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until smooth. Add the almond milk mixture and continue mixing for 1 minute more. Add half of the crushed cookies and mix until just combined. Scoop the batter into

the prepared donut pan, filling three-quarters of the way full. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool before frosting. Microwave the uncovered frosting jar for 5-second intervals, stirring in between, until soft. Gently frost the top of each donut. Sprinkle the remaining crushed cookies over the donuts.

• On Aug. 31, 1888, the first known victim of London serial killer “Jack the Ripper” is found murdered in the city’s impoverished Whitechapel district. At least four more women were found murdered in similar fashion over the next few months. In 1892, with no leads found and no more murders recorded, the Jack the Ripper file was closed. • On Sept. 1, 1928, Robert Pirsig, author of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” is born. Despite being rejected by more than 120 publishing houses, his 1974 book became a cult classic, selling more than 4 million copies over the next 25 years. • On Sept. 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan formally surrenders to the Allies, bringing an end to World War II. • On Aug. 27, 1955, the first edition of “The Guinness Book of Records” is published in Great Britain. The book was intended to be given away for free in pubs to promote the Guinness brand; however, it became so popular that the Irish brewer started selling it. • On Aug. 29, 1962, American poet Robert Frost leaves for the Soviet Union. Amblyopia Often referred to as “lazy eye,” amblyopia may be characterized by reduced vision in an eye that has not received adequate use during early childhood. Amblyopia may result from misalignment of a child’s eyes or from one eye focusing better than the other. If left untreated, the weaker eye

can continue to weaken until it is rendered useless. Sight in the affected eye can be restored if treatment is begun early, says Prevent Blindness America. to travel into space following lift off aboard the space shuttle Challenger. During their six days in space, the Challenger crew launched an Indian communications satellite. • On Aug. 28, 1996, Charles, Prince of Wales

and heir to the British throne, and his wife, Princess Diana, formally divorce. In 1981, nearly 1 billion television viewers in 74 countries tuned in to witness their marriage ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.

blurry. Experts say it occurs from the uneven curvature of the cornea or lens, which prevents rays of light from entering the eye and focusing on a single point on the retina, otherwise known as a refractive error. Prescription eyeglasses often fix astigmatism. All About Vision also says that refractive surgery may correct astigmatism. Color blindness (color vision deficiency) The main symptom of color blindness is difficulty distinguishing between colors or making mistakes when identifying colors, particularly those shaded red and green. Typically by age five, children with normal color vision will be able to iden-

tify groups of colors, so if a school-aged child is having difficulty or showing disinterest in coloring, he or she may benefit from a colorblindness test. The National Eye Institute says color blindness is much more common in males than in females. Pediatric glaucoma This rare condition, also known as congenital glaucoma, occurs in infants and young children. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says incorrect development of the eye’s drainage system before birth leads to increased intraocular pressure, which can damage the optic nerve. Enlarged eyes, corneal cloudiness and sensitivity to light can be symptoms. Medication and surgery

are required in most cases. Strabismus Strabismus is a condition of misaligned eyes. It occurs when the eye muscles fail to work together and the eyes turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. By the age of three to four months, an infant’s eyes should be able to focus and be straight and parallel. Parents should consult an eye care professional if they notice eye alignment problems in their children. Pink eye (conjunctivitis), diabetes-related eye problems and other refractive errors also can occur in children. Routine eye examinations can identify problems and get children the treatment they need.

Residents of Yorkton and Area The Health Foundation’s 2nd Annual Rhythm ‘n Ribs was a huge success.

Rhythm ‘n Ribs made $38,782. Those funds will help buy the new digital microscopy system we need in the lab of the Yorkton Regional Hospital. A special thank you to everyone who volunteered!

Events like Rhythm ‘n Ribs need a lot of volunteers. We had over 160 volunteers and they are a big part of why the event went so smoothly. Thank you for helping to keep Rhythm ‘n Ribs Free

We asked people to help us keep the event free by making a donation – and people responded and we raised over $7,000 in donations. Next year Rhythm ‘n Ribs will continue to be free.
