Q: I can’t believe anyone at CBS thought that “Magnum P.I.” would be worth seeing without Tom Selleck playing the lead role, and there’s a female Higgins? Also, the dogs can’t even come close to Zeus and Apollo. — J.P. Moran, via email A: Remakes are seldom a good idea, but some of them have been successful. The “Charlie’s Angels” movies did very well at

the box office, but ABC’s attempt at a “Charlie’s Angels” series flopped. Most likely what led to CBS reviving “Magnum P.I.” was the success of “Hawaii Five-0,” another classic crime show with a handsome male lead set in picturesque Oahu. In the 2018 reboot, Magnum is played by Jay Hernandez (“Scandal”), and Higgins, who was previously played by John Hillerman, is now reimagined as Juliet Higgins, a gorgeous blonde played by Perdita Weeks (“Penny Dreadful”). According to Deadline. com, “Magnum P.I.” is off to a modest start in the

ratings. Time will tell if it becomes a hit, but it’s very doubtful it will reach the status of the original since viewers have so many choices now, not only on

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 59-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis. I have never been a drinker. I was treated with Harvoni for three months. I understand the medication is intended to cure the hepatitis C. What about the cirrhosis? My doctor hasn’t explained any of my longterm effects from taking this. — C.J. ANSWER: Hepatitis C is a common infection of the liver. It is caused by a virus, which can be

transmitted by blood and blood products, as well as through sharing needles for injection drugs. It is rarely transmitted sexually. Anyone with a history of injection drug use, who received blood transfusions or organ transplants before 1992, or who received clotting factors before 1987 should be tested, as should anyone with a known blood or sexual exposure to someone with hepatitis C. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends testing all adults born in the United States between 1945 and 1965, anyone who is HIV-infected, who received hemodialysis or was incarcerated. The treatment you have taken (Harvoni) is a combination of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir, and has an

excellent cure rate. The cure rate is 99 percent in people who had never been treated before and who did not have cirrhosis. Even people like you, with cirrhosis, had a cure rate of 94 percent with 12 weeks of therapy in the trial that got the medication approved. Cirrhosis is liver damage and scarring as a result of liver disease. Once it has developed, it is not reversible; however, a successful cure of the hepatitis C virus greatly reduces the risk of further damage, specifically reducing the need for liver transplant and the rates of death, liver cancer and other liver-related complications. These medications are so new that I can’t estimate how much lower your risk of further damage to your liver is post-treatment;

network and cable television, but streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. In addition to television, feature films are still trying to capitalize on name recognition. There’s a “Fantasy Island” film coming out starring Michael Pena as Mr. Roarke, and a new “Charlie’s Angels” film with a whole new cast that includes Kristen Stewart (“Twilight”). Q: What is the new series Pete Davidson is starring in? I saw him in a commercial wearing what I assume is a wig. Is he leaving “Saturday Night Live”? — J.K. A: You can still catch Davidson on “SNL” for the

foreseeable future. He’s merely guest starring on the second season of the TBS comedy “The Guest Book.” Each week, new actors will play characters who stay at the Bare Feet Retreat and record their confessions in the cottage’s guest book. Will Arnett, Garret Dillahunt and Lisa Rinna will all be featured this season, which airs Tuesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET/ PT. Q: I saw a recent picture of Kevin Smith. He’s lost so much weight after his heart attack. How did he do it? — I.M. A: The funny director recently revealed a selfie of his new slim self, stat-

ing that he now weighs under 200 pounds for the first time since he was a teenager. Smith thanked Weight Watchers for getting his health back on track, along with his vegan diet. He also does yoga with Jay Mewes, better known as Silent Bob from Smith’s films. Correction: In a recent column, I mistakenly referred to one of the EGOT winners as Martin Hamlisch. It is most certainly Marvin Hamlisch. Thank you Bruce B. for pointing that out! Please send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com.

however, there is little doubt that your likely successful treatment will substantially improve your expected length and quality of life. But, since you still have cirrhosis, you will need to take some important precautions. These include continued abstinence from alcohol, careful monitoring of prescription and non-prescription medications, avoiding raw shellfish and making sure your immunizations are up-todate. You should keep asking your gastroenterologist questions until you are satisfied. I recommend you make a list of questions to ask, and bring a friend to help make sure you understand the answers you get. DEAR DR. ROACH: Should your blood pressure go higher as you age? Is the top number or the bottom more important? I don’t like medicine, and my blood pressure was 145/82, but the top number sometimes goes to 150-158. — J.S. ANSWER: Both the systolic (top number) and

diastolic blood pressures are important, and the difference between them is occasionally important (for example, a blood pressure of 160/60 is more worrisome than 160/85). Blood pressure does go up with age, but even in people over 60, the recommendation is still to get the BP down below 150, and I try to aim for 140 if there aren’t too many side effects. It often takes several tries to find a regimen that gets the blood pressure where it should be without affecting quality of life. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer

individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

Free flu vaccine available across the province Saskatchewan residents can get their free flu shot starting October 22 at public health clinics, local pharmacies, and some physician and Nurse Practitioner offices. “Influenza can cause serious illness and may lead to complications, howspitalization and even death,” Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab

said. “Don’t wait. Get your flu shot early in the season to protect yourself, your family and those to whom you provide care.” Flu shots are recommended for those at higher risk, including seniors, people with underlying chronic health conditions, children under five, and pregnant women. Seniors often have chronic health conditions like heart or

lung disease or diabetes and weaker immune systems, which makes them particularly vulnerable to complications from influenza. Saskatchewan’s publicly-funded flu vaccination program offers the injectable vaccine, which provides protection against four different flu virus strains most likely to circulate this season.

Population keeps growing Saskatchewan’s population continues to grow, reaching 1,162,062 people as of July 1, 2018 according to new figures released today by Statistics Canada. That’s an increase of 3,226 people in the past quarter and 11,280 people in the past year. The new population figure is slightly lower than previous estimates from Statistics Canada due to the post-census revision that is done every five years. The revised population estimates still show that Saskatchewan’s population has grown in every quarter for the past 49 consecutive quarters, the longest period of sustained growth since quarterly records

This year the province is providing Fluzone® High Dose vaccine for long-term-care residents 65 and older. This vaccine offers improved protection for seniors, especially the elderly. Also, starting this year the role of pharmacists has been expanded to allow them to administer the free flu shot to residents five years and older, during home visits, and in congregate living settings. Children under five

and non-Saskatchewan residents can be vaccinated at a public health clinic. To find out where and when to get a flu shot, call your public health office or HealthLine 811, or visit www.4flu.ca for a complete listing and schedule of public flu clinics. For a list of pharmacies that provide the free flu shot, check the Pharmacy Association of Saskatchewan website at www.skpharmacists.ca/

Halloween food drive planned By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Halloween can be about more than wearing costumes and gathering bags of candy. For the third year, a group in Yorkton is using the night of fright to help ensure the local Salvation Army Food Bank will have full shelves as they undertake their ‘Hunger is Scary Food Drive.’ The volunteer group collect non-perishable food items for the Food Bank, canvassing on Halloween night, collecting non-perishable food items rather than the

traditional candy. They “chose Halloween because people are generally more accepting of people coming to their door asking for food,” stated the group’s Facebook page. The group hopes to have enough volunteers to eventually be able to canvass the whole city in one night. Anyone wishing to volunteer can email ckkolson@sasktel.net Donations can also be dropped off at the Family Worship Center at 491 Broadway St. E., the Good Earth’s Shop at 385 Broadway St. E., or the Bank of Montreal.

Air cadets seeking youth By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Yorkton branch of the Air Cadet League of Canada is looking for more people, both youth members and adult volunteers. “We really need to try to get more kids in the air cadets,” said Terra Heddon, who sits on the local branch committee. Heddon said the program is a good one, with almost all of the costs asso-

ciated with the program covered by the Department of Defence. The group meets Tuesdays nights at Dr. Brass School. It also does semi-regular activities on weekends, ranging from flying in a glider with a supervisor, to participating in biathlons, to taking a weekend to learn outdoor winter survival skills. Heddon they could use a large base of volunteers for their weekend events

in particular. In the summer, members of the local group are able to apply to attend camps in Alberta and British Columbia, again with the costs covered, said Heddon. The cadet program is open to youth 12 and older. Anyone wanting more information, either for a youth participant or as a volunteer, may call either 306-620-5522 or 306-6202011.

HOLLYWOOD — Twotime “Braveheart” Oscarwinner Mel Gibson (for best picture and director), now forgiven for all past transgressions, will co-write, produce and star in a remake of “The Wild Bunch”. The original starred William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmund O’Brian, Warren Oates and Ben Johnson. I can’t wait to see how they cast this one. But before that, Gibson will be seen in “War Pigs,” with Colin Farrell, and helm the war drama “Destroyer,” reportedly with buddy Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg hits screens Nov. 16 in “Instant Family,” with Rose Byrne, Octavia Spencer, Margo Martindale and Tig Notaro. Disney darling LinManuel Miranda hits screens Dec. 19 in “Mary Poppins Returns” as Jack the lamplighter, former apprentice of Bert, played by Dick Van Dyke in the original. Van Dyke, who also played Mr. Dawes Sr., now is playing his own son, Dawes Jr., in the sequel. Also starring are Meryl Streep as Topsy, Angela Lansbury as The Balloon Lady and, of course, Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins. Miranda is currently filming the fantasy adventure

Robert De Niro co-stars. If the plot sounds familiar, and ironic, De Niro starred in “The King of Comedy” (1982) as Rupurt Pupkin, an autograph hound and mentally deranged aspiring standup comic who kidnaps a talk-show host, played by Jerry Lewis. De Niro has reteamed with his “Goodfellas” (1990) co-stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci in director Martin Scorsese’s Netflix

film “The Irishman,” premiering in 2019. Andrew Dice Clay has been bragging that he beat out both Robert De Niro and John Travolta for the role he has in the current release of “A Star Is Born,” with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Don’t know how De Niro will react, but in the good old days those were considered fighting words. Andrew Dice Clay should know better than take on “The Raging Bull.”

Mel Gibson “His Dark Materials,” with James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson. The smash Broadway musical “Cats” is headed for the big screen with “Dreamgirls” Oscarwinner Jennifer Hudson, pop star Taylor Swift, talkshow host James Cordon and Sir Ian McKellen. “Les Miserables” director Tom Hooper will direct for a December 2019 opening. Meanwhile, Cameron Crowe’s Oscarwinning screenplay “Almost Famous” is being adapted into a musical for Broadway, while the London musicalized version of “Network,” which starred Michelle Dockery in London, also is headed for Broadway (opening Dec. 6). Bryan Cranston and “Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany will take on the roles that won Oscars for Peter Finch and Faye Dunaway.

a line on the whereabouts of wife and mother Janet, the original Wasp who was lost mid-mission in the quantum realm. Scott receives a message from her, and although he’s been persona non grata to Pym and family, they whisk him away on the adventure. Director Peyton Reed mixes the right amounts of duty and danger and shenanigans with a dash of the love angle, making this movie a whole lot of fun. “Unfriended: Dark Web” (R) — Colin Woodell leads a gang of inadvertent cyber voyeurs in “Unfriended: Dark Web,” the sequel to the 2014 horror screen-

The plot thickens when the computer’s owner starts using his dark web minions to forcibly “close out

the windows” of Matias’ friends. He’s killing them, in alarming and very uncool ways. It’s scary. You don’t need to have seen the first to understand the sequel, but the format is the same: entirely from a device POV — the computer screen, with multiple user windows open, text

screens, camera phones and such. “Whitney” (R) — Director Kevin Macdonald turns the magnifying glass on Whitney Houston, iconic songstress, actress, record-breaking musician and the voice behind the most beautiful version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It’s no surprise to find that her life was difficult — her death at age 48 came on the heels of repeated high dramatics in her marriage to singer Bobby Brown, as well as incidents of drug and alcohol abuse, but there are revelations made in this in-depth look. Woven through interviews with close family and friends, rare footage, private home movies and off-guard moments, we experience the daring heights and the deep, profound lows along-

side this very much missed voice of a generation. “Reprisal” (R) — Based on the poster and trailer, you’d think Bruce Willis headlines this cat-andmouse thriller that pits a bank robber against a bank manager with an excop neighbor, but the truth is Willis barely registers screen time. Frank Grillo plays the bank manager who decides to get a little payback after he is robbed by a sophisticated crook (Johnathon Schaech). What could have been a compelling story came off as boring, and worse — I ended up not knowing who to root for. One of my fondest memories from my childhood is sitting around the dinner table with my family and cracking pecans for my mother’s fabulous pies and cakes. I didn’t start using pecans for savory dishes until I got married and immersed myself in Texas culinary history and culture. When selecting pecans, choose plump nuts that are uniform in size and golden brown in color. In-shell pecans should be light brown in color and smooth with no evidence of holes or other damage. Fresh, in-shell pecans will appear dusty, and they will have distinctive black markings on the shell. The fiber in pecans and other nuts is mostly insoluble, which has been linked to reduced cholesterol levels and shown to be helpful

in warding off colon cancer. Pecans contain high levels of zinc, believed to be beneficial to the body’s immune rejuvenation system; high levels of magnesium, beneficial in fighting heart disease; and selenium, an antioxidant nutrient linked to a lowered risk of stomach cancer. Pecans also contain vitamin E, an antioxidant that may guard against heart disease, some cancers, Parkinson’s disease and cataracts. Pecans are an excellent source of oleic acid, a fatty acid found in abundance in olive oil. Warm, toasted pecans are not only delicious and satisfying, but researchers are finding that they may be as beneficial to your health as cooking with olive oil. Studies have determined that the oils in pecans are like the olive oil widely consumed in Mediterranean countries, where the population has for centuries enjoyed longevity and one of the world’s lowest rates of heart disease. Like other nuts, pecans are high in fat, but an estimated 90 percent of the fat is monounsaturated.

ly flavorful as a part of this Pecan and Cranberry Quinoa Salad, which can be served as a vegan entree or a delicious side dish.

Monounsaturated fats have a protective effect on the blood, lowering total blood cholesterol and preserving the good HDLs that help combat heart disease. In addition, pecans are believed to be helpful in fighting some cancers. Their high oil content can cause pecans to become rancid if not properly stored. They should be refrigerated, shelled or unshelled, at 32 F to 35 F and can be stored for up to nine months. Pecans also can be frozen, shelled or unshelled, at 0 F for up to two years. They can be thawed and refrozen repeatedly without loss of flavor or texture. Pecans are especial-

PECAN AND CRANBERRY QUINOA SALAD Quinoa grains are coated with a natural compound called saponins, which can taste soapy or bitter, which is their purpose. Saponins prevent animals and birds from eating quinoa in the wild. Some people are particularly sensitive to saponins, which is why unrinsed cooked quinoa has a reputation for tasting bitter. If you buy quinoa from the bulk bin section of your supermarket, you might want to rinse it to be safe, especially if you have found quinoa to have a bitter flavor. Pre-washed quinoa as well as boil-inbag quinoa work well for this recipe. Toasting the quinoa improves the flavor and texture of the grain. •2 teaspoons olive oil •1/3 cup chopped pecans •1 tablespoon chopped

fresh parsley •2 green onions, roots removed and discarded, green and white parts chopped •1/3 cup dried cranberries •2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 1 large lemon’s worth) •2 tablespoons olive oil •1 cup dry, pre-washed quinoa •1-1/2 cups vegetable stock •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon ground black pepper •1 teaspoon granulated garlic •1 teaspoon granulated onion •1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper •1/4 teaspoon sugar or stevia To toast the nuts, place the oil in a medium-sized sauce pot over medium low heat. Add the nuts and stir occasionally until browned and fragrant, about 2 to 5 minutes. Remove nuts to a medium bowl and mix in the parsley, green onions, cranberries, lemon juice and olive oil.

Toast the quinoa in the pot over medium low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Add in the vegetable stock or broth, the salt, black pepper, garlic, onion, cayenne pepper and sugar or stevia. Cover the pot, bring to a full boil, then reduce to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Pour the pecan mixture on top of quinoa and mix together. Serve immediately or cover and chill in the fridge. Fluff the ingredients with a fork and bring to room temperature before serving. Serves 4 as a side dish, 2 as an entree. Questions about prescribed medications (NC) — When you are sitting in your doctor’s office, it can feel like your mind suddenly goes blank as soon as you are asked ‘do you have any questions’. Cut out this article and bring it to your next appointment. • How and When Should I Use This Medication? Many medications are most effective when taken at certain times of the day and in some cases with or without food. Some medications require learning how to use a device (such as an inhaler, of which there are many types). • What Are the Best Ways I Can Manage Multiple Medications? If you have several medications, it is often good to ask whether they are best taken together or throughout the day. Some pharmacies can pack your pills into pouches saving you time and confusion about

which medications to take when. • Is There a Simpler Way to Get My Medication Dosing? When it comes to multiple pills and inhalers it is easy to get overwhelmed. Advances in treatment may have resulted in easier to use medications. Ask your doctor for the best strategy to use for you.

stopping a medication because you are feeling better. • What Should I Do If I Miss a Dose? It happens to everyone, but doubling a dose the next day can be dangerous for some medi-

cations. Ask your doctor or pharmacist what you should do if you miss a dose of your medication, and tips for making your daily routine less complex and easier to follow. Always confirm instruc-

PORK CHOPS WITH APPLE PAN CHUTNEY A crisp autumn evening is the perfect time to enjoy these sweet-and-sour apple pork chops. Accompanied by roasted potatoes, this dish becomes a comforting cool-weather meal. •2 teaspoons olive oil •4 (about 5 ounces each) 3/4-inch-thick boneless pork loin chops, trimmed •Salt and ground black pepper •2 large (about 1 pound) Golden Delicious apples,

Add pork; sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and

1/8 teaspoon pepper. Cook pork about 8 minutes or until browned on the outside and still slightly pink on the inside, turning over once. Transfer pork to platter; cover with foil to keep warm. Reduce heat to medium-low. To same skillet, add apples, onion, dried cranberries, ginger, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Safety on Halloween night PK BINGO (NC) — Trick-or-treating is a family favourite that lets kids enjoy dressing up and indulge their sweet tooth. Whether they’re going out alone, with friends, or with you, here are some ways to keep them safe.

1. Keep costumes safe. Dress little ones appropriately for the weather so they can stay warm and comfortable for an extended time outdoors. Make sure their disguises are light-coloured and flame resistant, and aren’t too long as this can present a tripping hazard. Use face paint instead of masks that can limit vision. 2. Set boundaries. If your kids are going out with friends, set limits on where they can go so they stay familiar with their surroundings. Set a reasonable curfew time that lets them have fun and gets them home at a decent hour; this year Halloween is on a school night.

3. Create candy rules. Even if you’re with them, a good rule of thumb is to wait to get home and have parents examine the candy to make sure it’s safe to eat. If you’re worried about being tempted while out and about, bring snacks from home in case anyone

gets hungry. 4. Teach walking safety. Make sure your kids know to follow basic traffic safety even amidst all the hustle and bustle of Halloween. Key tips include: only crossing at crosswalks or intersections; hitting up houses on one side of the

street first to avoid crisscrossing across the road; and looking both ways before crossing the street. 5. Stay bright. It’s important to stay visible to vehicles, especially since it’s getting dark out early. Give your kids a lightreflective sticker for their costume.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What happened to all of the pets that were caught up in the terrible flooding that struck North and South Carolina after Hurricane Florence last month? — Sarah in Tallahassee, Florida DEAR SARAH: While Hurricane Florence’s massive rainfall caused loss of life throughout the region, including humans, pets and livestock, shelters in the Carolinas and in neighboring states put on a massive coordinated effort to get as many pets out of

• Stretch shoes with a zipper-top baggie! Insert a plastic bag into the shoe, where your feet go. Then add water just to fill. Put them in the freezer until solid. The ice expands as it freezes, which stretches the shoe. • If you’re replacing a hinge to re-hang a door and you need to use the same holes, add grip by placing a matchstick or toothpick in the hole before rescrewing the attachments. Just break it off flush with the door jamb. It will add some security to the hole so it won’t be so loose. • “Got kids? Take a tip from a furniture salesman: Get a couch that has a patterned fabric. Patterns hide stains and discoloration. The smaller the pattern, the more forgiving.” — W.S. in Idaho • “Stick a dryer sheet in the bottom of your trash can. It will give off a bit of fresh smell whenever something lands in the bag.” — R. in Pennsylvania • Sometimes old tricks are the best tricks: Use a cut half of a lemon liberally sprinkled with salt to scrub a wood cutting board clean. The salt acts as an abrasive while the acids in the lemon neu-

harm’s way as possible before the storm hit. Dogs, cats and other animals that were already in shelters waiting to be adopted were evacuated to other states, even as far away as Minnesota. That made room for pets whose owners needed to evacuate to facilities that wouldn’t allow pets, as well as pets rescued during the storm. The evacuation began days before the storm hit. As the waters recede, owners are reclaiming their pets from shelters. For example, the Pitt County, North Carolina, animal shelter housed at least 224 pets during the storm; all but four are back home. (Residents had 10 days after the last human shelter closed to pick up their pets.) The four dogs remaining likely will be put up for adoption. tralize odors and bacteria. Rinse and dry. • When defrosting meats in the fridge (never on the counter, right?), make sure they are sitting in a tray or plate with a lip. If the plastic leaks, you don’t want meat dripping on your other groceries. Defrost meats on the bottom shelf, just in case. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

In other areas where floodwaters were slow to recede, shelters are caring for the animals as best they can until their families are able to take them

back. Volunteers are pitching in where they can. And these shelters will need help after the waters recede. Consider donating money or supplies directly

Common terms found on food labels When shopping for groceries, some consumers may feel as if they need a degree in nutrition sciences to determine just what it is they’re buying. Food labels can be complex and include various terms that may be unknown to consumers. Understanding these terms can help people make sound decisions regarding the foods they eat. • Cage free: Eggs labeled “cage free” means that the hens that laid the eggs were not raised in caged housing systems. • Daily value: According to the medical resource WebMD, daily value indicates the percentage of a certain nutrient in a food, based on a 2,000-calorieper-day diet. WebMD notes

that 8 percent is general considered to be good. • Dietary fiber: The Mayo Clinic notes that dietary fiber refers to the parts of plant foods that the human body cannot digest or absorb. Fiber is typically classified as soluble, which refers to types of fiber that dissolve in water, and insoluble, which is used to describe types of fiber that promote movement of material through the digestive system. Soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, while insoluble can help people who suffer from constipation or irregular stools. • Enriched: Foods that are labeled as “enriched” have had nutrients added to them to replace those

that were lost when the food was processed. • Fortified: Fortified describes foods that had nutrients added to them that were not present initially. A common example of a fortified food or beverage is milk, which is fortified with vitamin D to help the body absorb the calcium present in milk. • GMO: GMO stands for “genetically modified organisms,” which are organisms that have had their genetic material artificially manipulated in genetic engineering labs. The Non-GMO Project says that a growing body of evidence has connected

GMOs with an assortment of health problems and environmental damage. • Grass fed: Grass fed implies that the animals used to produce meat and dairy were fed only grass. • Hormone free: The federal government of the United States prohibits the use of hormones to raise poultry and hogs, so manufacturers who label their foods as “hormone free” have not gone above and beyond to make their foods healthier. • Organic: The United States Department of Agriculture has strict criteria in regard to labeling foods as “organic.” To be labeled “organic,” dairy,

Did you know? Antibiotics are not effective in preventing or treating the flu. Antibiotics are used when bacteria is the cause of illnesses and help kill bacteria or stop them from reproducing, indicates Medline Plus. Influenza is a viral infection, meaning antibiotics will be useless against it. The only times when antibiotics may be prescribed during a flu illness is if flu symptoms have contributed to secondary or tertiary illnesses, such as strep throat or ear infections. Requesting antibiotics without the presence of a bacterial infection will not help a person feel better faster, and taking antibiotics unnecessarily could compound the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

• Sodium: Otherwise known as salt, sodium is necessary to maintain nerve and muscle health. However, many people consume too much sodium, oftentimes because of processed foods. WebMD notes that sodium intake should be limited to 2,300 milligrams or less per day. Certain people, such as those over the age of 51, African Americans or those with certain conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.

eggs, meat, and poultry can come only from animals that were not given antibiotics or growth hormones. Fruits and vegetables can only be labeled “organic” if they were produced without conventional pesticides, fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation. • Processed: Many consider processed foods to be bad and loaded with additives. But that’s not always the case. The USDA defines processed as foods that have undergone a change of character. For example, cut, prewashed spinach qualifies as a processed food.

10 early signs of Alzheimer’s disease Change plays a big role in the aging process. As adults age, both their minds and bodies undergo changes. The changes associated with aging are not uniform. Some people may experience small changes as they inch toward and ultimately pass retirement age, while others may undergo changes that affect nearly every aspect of their lives. Cognitive decline is the type of age-related change that can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life, affecting his or her ability to live independently. A general term used to

describe symptoms associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills such as judgment and reasoning, dementia is often mistaken as a normal part of aging. However, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America notes that dementia-related illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, are not a normal part of aging. Because many people associate memory loss with aging, they may be compelled to accept some of the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s as mere byproducts of growing older. However, the

Alzheimer’s Association urges men and women to report any of these 10 early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s to their physicians the moment they’re noticed. Family members who notice these signs in their relatives also should report them to their loved ones’ physicians. 1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life: Examples of this symptom include forgetting recently learned information; forgetting important dates and events; and asking for the same information over and over. 2. Challenges in plan-

ning or solving problems: Someone exhibiting this symptom may have trouble following a recipe or paying monthly bills. 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home at work or at leisure: Forgetting the rules of a favorite game or experiencing trouble driving to a familiar location are some examples of this symptom. 4. Confusion with time or place: People with Alzheimer’s lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships: Some

people with Alzheimer’s have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast. 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing: Difficulty joining or continuing a conversation and calling things by the wrong name are some examples of this symptom. 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps: People with Alzheimer’s sometimes put things in unusual places and then cannot retrace their steps to find those things. 8. Decreased or poor judgment: Poor judgment

and decision-making often affects people with Alzheimer’s. 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities: People with this symptom may begin to withdraw from favorite activities or avoid being social because of the changes they’re experiencing. 10. Changes in mood and personality: Mood changes affect people with Alzheimer’s, who may become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful, or anxious. Learn more about Alzheimer’s disease at www.alz.org.

How to make more time for family meals Numerous studies have shown that children who frequently eat dinner with their families benefit from such meals in myriad ways. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University notes that teens who eat dinner with their families between five and seven times per week perform better academically and are less likely to try tobacco and consume alcohol than those who eat dinner with their families three or fewer times per week. Busy parents may

think they don’t have the time to eat five or more meals with their families each week, but there are ways for even the busiest moms and dads to make more time for family meals. • Make simple meals. Meals need not be lavish affairs for children to benefit from them. When planning weeknight meals, parents can choose meals that can be prepared and cooked in 30 minutes or less. Meals that can be quickly and easily prepared increase

the likelihood that families will sit down together on busy weeknights. Leave more complex meals for the weekend, encouraging kids to help in the preparation of such meals. • Make meals in advance. Meal preparation can take a lot of time, discouraging busy parents from preparing homecooked meals on weeknights. But when planning menus, parents can choose recipes that can be prepared on weekends, placed in the freezer and then defrosted and

Wow guests with a delicious one-pot meal (NC) — Looking for the perfect recipe for entertaining? This delicious chicken and shrimp paella recipe from Chef Mike Ward is a flavourful dish for any occasion. This appetizing meal makes it easy to see why so many top chefs prefer cooking with natural gas. Stoves and grills that use natural gas allow you to cook with more even, direct and precise heat. Try it out and see the difference. CHICKEN AND SHRIMP PAELLA Prep time: 40 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 • 8 bone-in, skinless chicken thighs • 8 bone-in, skinless chicken drumsticks • 1 pound (450 g) peeled and deveined frozen medium shrimp, thawed • 4 tbsp (60 mL) olive oil • Coarse salt and ground pepper • 2 links (115 g/4 oz) precooked Spanish chorizo,

chopped • 4 garlic cloves, minced • 2 red bell peppers (ribs and seeds removed), thinly sliced • 1 onion, chopped • 2 cups Arborio rice • 2 boxes (591 mL) frozen peas • 2 cans (29 oz/858mL) diced tomatoes, in juice • 2 cans (29 oz/858mL) reduced-sodium chicken broth Season chicken with salt and pepper. In a 5-quart Dutch oven or

heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil over medium-high. Working in batches, cook chicken (do not crowd pot) until browned for about 7 to 8 minutes, turning once. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Reserve pot. Place bell pepper, chorizo, onion, garlic and tomatoes (with their juice) in pot. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid has evaporated; about 4 to 6 minutes. Add rice, stirring until translucent around edges; about 1 to 2 minutes. Add broth and chicken, bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook until rice begins to soften; about 10 minutes. Add peas and shrimp, submerging them in liquid. Cover and cook until shrimp are opaque throughout; about 4 to 6 minutes. Find more delicious recipes online at enbridgegas.com/cookingwithgas.

cooked on weeknights. Slow cookers can make weeknight family dinners more manageable. Many slower cooker recipes do not require much time to prepare. Before leaving for work in the morning, parents can place all the necessary ingredients in their slow cookers, set the timer and then arrive home to find cooked meals

waiting for them. If slow cooker recipes require potentially time-consuming chopping and dicing, parents can dice and chop the night before their family meals, store items in the refrigerator overnight and then place all ingredients into the slower cooker in the morning. • Order takeout. Though it can be costly for fami-

lies to make takeout part of their weekly routines, takeout provides another way for families to enjoy meals together at home. When ordering takeout, parents who want to provide nutritious meals for their children should skip fast food in favor of healthier fare from nearby restaurants, grocery stores or diners.

Simple ways to help kids eat healthy Childhood obesity is a problem in many parts of the world, including the United States and Canada. The 2015-2016 National Health and Nutritional Evaluation Survey from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the national childhood obesity rate among 2- to 19-yearolds was 18.5 percent. Just north of the United States, the Public Health Agency of Canada reports that, in 2017, 30 percent of Canadian children between the ages of five and 17 were overweight or obese. Healthy lifestyles can help children achieve and maintain healthy weights into adulthood. Nutritious diets are an essential component of healthy lifestyles, and the American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following tips to parents who want to help their kids eat healthier.

such as potatoes, pasta and rice, help the body use fat and cholesterol. Small amounts of such foods can be beneficial additions to kids’ diets. When serving such foods, avoid toppings such as butter, sour cream and gravy, which tend to be high in calories. Foods like cottage cheese, lowfat yogurt and parmesan cheese are low calorie alternatives to more traditional toppings.

or broth-based soups. Vegetable- or broth-based soups tend to be lower in calories and saturated fat than cream-based alternatives. When serving soups, particularly store-bought canned soups, parents should read labels and be mindful of the sodium content. Some canned soups include as much as two-

• Choose lean meats as entrées. When choosing entrées, parents should opt for lean meats, such as white meat chicken or turkey. Lean cuts of beef, pork or fish also can be included in healthy diets. When preparing chicken, remove the skin and cut away fat, which also can be removed from pork.

Home plumbing systems are designed to handle heavy usage. When everything is working as it should, toilets flush, showers drain properly, and sink basins empty of water in a snap. But when a clog is present in a system, water can quickly back up. There are various techniques to clear clogged drains. Minor clogs may be

cleared without the help of a plumber or even any tools. More significant blockages will require more elbow grease. The first step to clearing a clog is to locate the problem. Drainage issues that affect a particular sink or toilet may be isolated to that fixture. Clogs that are present throughout the house may be indicative

foods. When preparing meals, parents can bake, broil or grill foods instead of frying them. Fried foods have been linked to a host of ailments, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In addition, when foods are fried in oil, they lose water and absorb fat, increasing their overall calorie count.

How to clear a clogged drain

• Serve low-fat or no-fat milk, yogurt and cheese. Low-fat dairy products are low in calories, saturated fat and cholesterol but still provide high amounts of protein, calcium and various vitamins and minerals. • Serve starches in small batches. The AAP notes that starchy foods,

of a larger problem in the plumbing that is directing waste away from the house and into the sewer system. Sometimes a clog can be freed by pouring boiling hot water or a combination of baking soda and vinegar down the drain. If that doesn’t help, move on to a plunger, advise the experts at This Old House. By creating pressure within the pipes, a plunger can dislodge whatever is causing the backup. If the clog seems to be further down the drain, hair or grime may have become trapped. An auger, often referred to as a “plumber’s snake,” can be inserted into the drain to remove the grime and free up the water flow. Homeowners without access to an auger can try to fish the clog out of the drain with a wire hanger. If clogs cannot be alleviated, drain traps may need to be accessed. Those who do not know their way around pipes and wrenches should hire a professional.

A Tradition of Trust Since 1893

This savory sandwich is a true classic The sandwich is the quintessential portable food, and one that has scores of incarnations. The modern concept of a sandwich that combines meats, cheeses and vegetables between slices of bread can be traced to 18th century Europe. The sandwich is purportedly named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Rumor has it that, around 1762, Montagu

asked for meat to be served between slices of bread so that he could dine without interrupting his gambling game. Others soon ordered foods served “the same as Sandwich,” and the name has stuck ever since. Many people argue that there is no beating a classic reuben when it comes to sandwiches. A reuben is made of corned beef that is piled high and swiss cheese served on rye or pumpernickel

bread. Sauerkraut and Russian dressing give this sandwich its tangy kick.

Breakfast, Jamaican style If breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day, then why not whip up something that’s rich in flavor? Such is the case with the following recipe for “Jerk Chicken ‘Hash’” from Helen Willinsky’s “Jerk from Jamaica” (Ten Speed Press). Serve it alongside some scrambled eggs and sliced mango and enjoy getting your day off to a great and tasty start. JERK CHICKEN “HASH” Serves 4 •2 tablespoons vegetable oil •1 pound potatoes, cut into 1⁄4-inch cubes •1 yellow onion, diced into 1⁄4-inch pieces •3 cloves garlic, minced •1 tomato, diced •1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-size pieces •2 tablespoons Dry Jerk Seasoning (see below)

•1 teaspoon ground cumin •2 tablespoons sesame seeds •1⁄2 cup chicken broth •3 scallions, including green parts, sliced Heat the oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat. Add the potatoes, onion, garlic, and tomato; stir all together; and cook for about 10 minutes. Add the chicken, stir in the jerk seasoning, cumin, and sesame seeds and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 5 minutes. Pour in the chicken broth and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, until the liquid is absorbed, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and toss the chopped scallions over the chicken hash. Serve immediately.

DRY JERK SEASONING Makes 5 tablespoons •1 tablespoon onion flakes •1 tablespoon onion powder •2 teaspoons ground dried thyme •2 teaspoons salt •1 teaspoon ground Jamaican allspice •1⁄4 teaspoon ground nutmeg •1⁄4 teaspoon ground cinnamon •2 teaspoons sugar •1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper •1 teaspoon cayenne pepper •2 teaspoons dried chives or green onions Mix together all the ingredients. Store leftover seasoning in a tightly closed glass jar. It will keep its pungency for more than a month.
