Dashing through the snow Nice weather Saturday temperature-wise made it ideal for a sleigh ride provided by Beynon’s Belgians from Saltcoats. The rides were part of a day full of activities held at Switzer’s Home-grown Family Farm just east of Yorkton. In addition to the rides that wound through the tree farm there was, a

bonfire where people could roast wieners, as well as hot chocolate to drink, Christmas music, and a cookie sale, all to help anyone attending get into the Christmas spirit. Proceeds from the event went to the Yorkton United U13 girls’ soccer team.

Landfill will now recycle grain bags The City of Yorkton Landfill will begin collecting rolled Grain Bags free of charge for recycling starting December 1st, 2018.

“The new program, in conjunction with Cleanfarms Inc., will provide a collection site at the landfill for clean, rolled grain bags to be dropped off,” said Landfill Manager JeanAnne Teliske. “This adds a new and important feature to Yorkton’s recycling programs, and will provide an important service for the regional agricultural community” said Mayor Bob Maloney.

The Yorkton Sanitary Landfill already serves a number of communities and municipalities in the region on a fee for service basis, as smaller, local landfills can no longer meet environmental standards and are becoming uneconomical.

Over the past 10 years, the use of grain bags has grown substantially across the prairies as a convenient, short-term storage solution for grain farmers.

The bags, however, can only be used once, and then must be disposed of.

“There will now be a local option for disposal,” said

New training required for semi drivers Starting March 15, 2019, drivers seeking a Class 1 commercial licence in Saskatchewan to drive semi trucks will be required to undergo a minimum of 121.5 hours of training.

The change was announced today by the Government of Saskatchewan to make Saskatchewan roads safer for commercial semi truck drivers and everyone who shares the road with them.

“Saskatchewan has been working to improve standards for training curriculum and driver testing for semi drivers since mid-2017,” Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave said. “Our ongoing consultations with other provinces have

helped address gaps and inconsistencies when commercial drivers cross provincial borders. Stronger training requirements in Saskatchewan and across Canada will help make our province’s and our nation’s roads safer.”

The new curriculum will include instruction in a classroom, in the yard, and behind the wheel. Training will focus on priority curriculum areas including basic driving techniques, professional driving habits, vehicle inspections and air brakes. Driver’s tests will be aligned to the curriculum ensuring more rigour. Training schools will receive instruction and training on the new curriculum, and the people

who deliver training will be held to higher standards.

“The Saskatchewan Trucking Association applauds this move,” Saskatchewan Trucking Association Executive Director Susan Ewart said. “The industry is onboard with strengthened training requirements.

Commercial drivers play a critical role delivering goods that keep our economy moving. Our industry also has a responsibility to make sure commercial semi drivers have the knowledge and skills to

do their job ensuring the safety of everyone on the road.”

Existing Class 1 drivers will be grandfathered in as of the implementation date.

itoring program is being introduced for all new semi drivers. This means, in addition to the existing monitoring that occurs for all drivers, SGI will monitor semi drivers more stringently for a year posttesting so remedial action can be taken if there are safety concerns.

Further, as of March 15, 2019, Class 1 road tests will be undertaken with SGI examiners only.

Programs empower clients toward bright futures Saskatoon – December 3, 2018 – Today is International Day of Person’s with Disabilities and this year’s theme is “Empowering person’s with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. This is exactly what CNIB has done for Paige Andreas.

“I really have grown as a person, by participating in the employment programs at CNIB. Giving me the confidence to realize that I am capable of gaining employment and that my eye condition doesn’t have to hold me back,” said the 22-year-old.

Andreas participated in the first ever CNIB Employment Bootcamp in July and is presently an intern at CNIB in the Saskatoon office. Both programs are a part of the CNIB’s ongoing efforts to “change what is to be blind today” and “boost participation in the world of work.”

“We give people who are blind or partially sighted the tools to show the potential they already have. We also help them gain job skills, work experience and learn what technology will help them do their job better,” said Julie Kehrig the Career and Employment Specialist at Vision Loss Rehabilitation Saskatchewan, a CNIB organization.

“But this is only one part of the equation,” said Kehrig, “We also need employers to see how easy it is to employ people with sight loss, so we break down any barriers that still exist.”

In a recent survey of blind and partially sighted adults across three countries, results showed Australia had the lowest

full-time employment rate at 24 per cent, followed

by Canada at 28 per cent, while New Zealand had the highest with only 32 per cent. However, the full-time employment rate among the general public in these countries is, in some cases, nearly double that.

“These low employment rates just reflect a lack of understanding. We can help employers with workplace accommodations that will allow them to employ people with sight loss enabling them to gain a potential life long employee like Andreas,” said Kehrig.

“I just want others with sight loss to have the confidence I have found. CNIB helped me realize there is so much I can do that I didn’t realize I could before,” said Andreas.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing about platelet donations. As a way of giving back, I donate platelets. I was wondering if there is a time that a person should stop donating, based on age or difficulty. I am 61 years old, and the past three times I’ve donated, I felt uncomfortable in some way. Either my arm or wrist hurt, or I had a feeling of malaise during the donating process. One time, I was told that my platelet count was on the low side, but it was not any danger to my wellbeing. I feel well immediately afterward and do not have health issues, so my concern is whether this

is somehow detrimental to my own health as I age.

— S.B. ANSWER: Platelet donation generally is a very well-tolerated procedure. The platelets are removed from the donor’s blood via a process called apheresis; a centrifuge separates the blood into four components: plasma (containing proteins), platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells.

For platelet donors, just the platelets are removed, and the rest of the blood components are returned to the donor.

In order to keep the blood from clotting inside the machine, sodium citrate is added to the apheresis machine. This reduces the calcium, which is needed for blood clotting. However, some people can develop symptoms of low calcium during the apheresis. This can be treated by slowing the rate of donation, or by taking some oral calcium before donating.

More-severe

cases might require giving intravenous calcium to the patient via another IV catheter.

The Food and Drug Administration recommends that people make no more than 24 donations per year, but there is good evidence that platelet donation is safe. I congratulate you on being a community-minded citizen, and I can reassure you that you have very little short-term risk and essentially zero long-term risk from donating platelets, whatever your age. Donate as often as is comfortable, and try taking a calcium supplement before donating.

Carbon monoxide safety tips (NC) — Snow and ice create dangerous conditions for those who venture outside during the winter, but we often forget about dangers indoors, such as carbon monoxide poisoning.

Often known as “the silent killer,” CO is a colourless and odourless gas that is impossible to detect without an alarm. In fact, according to Statistics Canada, carbon monoxide poisoning is the number one cause of accidental poisoning in the country and is responsible for more than 300 deaths annually.

Here are tips to keep your loved ones safe through winter: Eliminate CO at the source. Have a professional check fuel-burning appliances — like your furnace, stove, water heater and clothes dryer — for leaks and annual maintenance.

Never use generators indoors. In the case of a power outage or furnace failure, both gas-powered and portable electric

generators must only be used outside. Never use them inside the home, in a garage or any confined area where CO can collect.

Install alarms. Carbon monoxide alarms are the only way to detect this poisonous gas, yet a recent survey revealed over half of Canadians report not having CO alarms in their homes. Consider one that doesn’t need battery replacements for the life of the alarm, like the First Alert 10-year Battery Carbon Monoxide Alarm, which uses an electrochemical sensor, the most accurate technology available.

Be mindful of the garage. Never leave a car running in an attached garage. Even if the garage door is open, emissions can leak into the home.

Clear all vents and watch stove usage.

Especially after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove and fireplace are clear of snow. Never use a stove to heat your home and, when stovetop cooking for

“Searching” (R) — John Cho stars as David, a widower whose 16-year-old daughter disappears after a study group. Although he enlists the help of a police detective (Debra Messing), the physical trail goes cold, and he begins to follow his daughter’s digital footprint — hacking her computer, contacts, messages, etc. All is not as he had believed, and it’s a switchback trail of leads, twists, turns and heartstopping suspense. Filmed and shown via found footage style: YouTube videos, Skypes and chat screens, it marks the debut of director Aneesh Chaganty, who looks to be off to a great start in owning this genre.

“The Little Stranger” (R) — The imposing manor house where Dr. Faraday’s (Domnhall Gleeson) mother worked was a place of

reverence in his childhood memories, but Hundreds Hall has turned to a cold shell of itself when he returns 30 years later to care for the manor’s inhabitants. Mrs. Ayers (Charlotte Rampling) is the matriarch. Her son Roderick (Will Poulter) is disturbed and convinced the house is angry with the family; and daughter Caroline (Ruth Wilson) carries a tragic past. As more unexplained phenomena occur, and as the relationships between Dr. Faraday and the family develop, the link between past and present blurs.

“At First Light” (NR) — Stefanie Scott and Theodore Pelerine star as Alex and Sean in this young adult, first contact with aliens love story. Alex has a run in with a supernatural force that leaves her with newfound powers, while Sean is the friend with the heart of gold who will stick by her throughout her ordeal. Chestnuts belong to the beech or Fagaceae family of trees, which are native to the mountainous forests of China, Japan, Europe, and North America. Chestnuts were once staples of North American diets because they could be found quite

readily along the Eastern seaboard, where many early settlers first landed their ships. Chestnuts were once the most popular ingredient in 18th and 19th cuisine and became widely linked to Christmas dinner.

Early American chestnuts were small and flavorful and were abundant in late fall. Chestnuts once had a sweet flavor when eaten raw. However, they took on a nutty essence when roasted. Chestnut street vendors could be found sending off wafting aromas of inviting chestnuts from corner to corner. Unfortunately, a chestnut tree blight in the early 20th century decimated nearly all American Chestnut trees, leading to the demise of the domestic chestnut industry — and perhaps contributing to a declining interest in chest-

Today, most chestnuts are imported from Korea, China and Italy. The Agricultural Marketing Resource Center reports that American chestnut production is less than 1 percent of total world production. The United States has 919 farms producing chestnuts on more than 3,700 acres. There may be hope for reviving interest in chestnuts as new research is trying to prevent the Asian blight that wiped out trees long ago.

CHRISTMAS FRUIT DROPS The perfect holiday sweets for an old-fashioned swap with friends.

cherries, coarsely chopped •1/2 cup green candied cherries, coarsely chopped •1-1/2 cup white chocolate chips

•2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon baking soda •1/2 teaspoon salt •1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened •3/4 cup granulated sugar •1/2 cup (packed) dark brown sugar •1 teaspoon vanilla extract •3 large eggs •2 cups toasted rice cereal •1 cup walnuts, toasted and coarsely chopped •1/2 cup red candied

Heat oven to 350 F. Grease large cookie sheet.

On waxed paper, combine flour, baking soda and salt. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter and sugars until creamy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat in vanilla, then eggs, 1 at a time. At low speed, gradually add flour mixture; beat just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl. With spoon, stir in cereal, walnuts, cherries and 1 cup chocolate chips.

Drop dough by rounded

teaspoons, 1 inch apart, onto cookie sheet. Bake cookies 10 to 11 minutes or until golden. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough.

Place remaining 1/2 cup chocolate chips in small microwave-safe bowl; heat in microwave on Medium (50 percent power) about 2 minutes or until chocolate melts, stirring once. Stir until smooth.

Place cookies on waxed paper; drizzle with melted chocolate. When chocolate is set, store cookies, with waxed paper between layers, in tightly covered container at room temperature up to 1 week, or in freezer up to 3 months.

Makes 6 dozen cookies.

Pipe meringue, about 1 inch apart, onto foil-lined cookie sheets into rosettes,

each about 1-1/2 inches in diameter and about 1-1/4 inches high.

Bake Meringue Kisses 3 hours. Turn oven control to off. Leave meringues in oven 30 minutes longer to dry. Cool completely on cookie sheets on wire racks.

With metal spatula, carefully loosen meringues from foil. Store in tightly covered containers.

TIP: Food coloring paste is available in specialty stores wherever cake decorating equipment is sold.
