Dashing through the snow Nice weather Saturday temperature-wise made it ideal for a sleigh ride provided by Beynon’s Belgians from Saltcoats. The rides were part of a day full of activities held at Switzer’s Home-grown Family Farm just east of Yorkton. In addition to the rides that wound through the tree farm there was, a

bonfire where people could roast wieners, as well as hot chocolate to drink, Christmas music, and a cookie sale, all to help anyone attending get into the Christmas spirit. Proceeds from the event went to the Yorkton United U13 girls’ soccer team.

Landfill will now recycle grain bags The City of Yorkton Landfill will begin collecting rolled Grain Bags free of charge for recycling starting December 1st, 2018. “The new program, in conjunction with Cleanfarms Inc., will provide a collection site at the landfill for clean, rolled grain bags to be dropped off,” said Landfill Manager JeanAnne Teliske. “This adds a new and important feature to Yorkton’s recycling programs, and will provide an important service for the regional agricultural community” said Mayor Bob Maloney.

The Yorkton Sanitary Landfill already serves a number of communities and municipalities in the region on a fee for service basis, as smaller, local landfills can no longer meet environmental standards and are becoming uneconomical. Over the past 10 years, the use of grain bags has grown substantially across the prairies as a convenient, short-term storage solution for grain farmers. The bags, however, can only be used once, and then must be disposed of. “There will now be a local option for disposal,” said

ardship association, which works with governments and partner agencies to

Funding for the 2018 grain bag recycling program was provided in part by Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture through the federal-provincial Growing Forward 2 initiative. Bags brought for recyc-

ling must be as clean as possible, rolled and tied securely with twine. Once approximately 18 tonnes or approximately 120 grain bags have been collected at the Yorkton site, Cleanfarms will pick up the bags for recycling. Almost two thirds of the product is recycled in North America, into products such as garbage bags. The remaining third goes to overseas markets. New training required for semi drivers Starting March 15, 2019, drivers seeking a Class 1 commercial licence in Saskatchewan to drive semi trucks will be required to undergo a minimum of 121.5 hours of training. The change was announced today by the Government of Saskatchewan to make Saskatchewan roads safer for commercial semi truck drivers and everyone who shares the road with them. “Saskatchewan has been working to improve standards for training curriculum and driver testing for semi drivers since mid-2017,” Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave said. “Our ongoing consultations with other provinces have

helped address gaps and inconsistencies when commercial drivers cross provincial borders. Stronger training requirements in Saskatchewan and across Canada will help make our province’s and our nation’s roads safer.” The new curriculum will include instruction in a classroom, in the yard, and behind the wheel. Training will focus on priority curriculum areas including basic driving techniques, professional driving habits, vehicle inspections and air brakes. Driver’s tests will be aligned to the curriculum ensuring more rigour. Training schools will receive instruction and training on the new curriculum, and the people

who deliver training will be held to higher standards. “The Saskatchewan Trucking Association applauds this move,” Saskatchewan Trucking Association Executive Director Susan Ewart said. “The industry is onboard with strengthened training requirements. Commercial drivers play a critical role delivering goods that keep our economy moving. Our industry also has a responsibility to make sure commercial semi drivers have the knowledge and skills to

do their job ensuring the safety of everyone on the road.” Existing Class 1 drivers will be grandfathered in as of the implementation date.

Best RRSP Rate in Town

Government continues to consult with the agricultural industry on impacts of potential mandatory training requirements for their sector, given these vehicles generally travel less frequently, shorter distances, and through less densely populated areas. Effective March 15, 2019, anyone wishing to

drive a semi used in farming operations will need to successfully obtain an “F” endorsement on their existing driver’s licence and will be restricted to operating within Saskatchewan’s borders. The “F” endorsement will not be required if they already have a Class 1 licence or have taken the mandatory training. Effective immediately, a 12-month safety mon-

itoring program is being introduced for all new semi drivers. This means, in addition to the existing monitoring that occurs for all drivers, SGI will monitor semi drivers more stringently for a year posttesting so remedial action can be taken if there are safety concerns. Further, as of March 15, 2019, Class 1 road tests will be undertaken with SGI examiners only.

So, a 7-foot tree would need about 63 feet of garland. • Dropped a glass ornament? They leave tiny shards, don’t they? To get the tiniest bits up, rely on a slice of white bread. Use it to sweep up after the large pieces have been cleared. The soft bread catches it all! • Got build-up on your battery terminal? Programs empower clients toward bright futures Saskatoon – December 3, 2018 – Today is International Day of Person’s with Disabilities and this year’s theme is “Empowering person’s with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. This is exactly what CNIB has done for Paige Andreas. “I really have grown as a person, by participating in the employment programs at CNIB. Giving me the confidence to realize that I am capable of gaining employment and that my eye condition doesn’t have to hold me back,” said the 22-year-old. Andreas participated in the first ever CNIB Employment Bootcamp in July and is presently an intern at CNIB in the Saskatoon office. Both programs are a part of the CNIB’s ongoing efforts to “change what is to be blind today” and “boost participation in the world of work.” “We give people who are blind or partially sighted the tools to show the potential they already have. We also help them gain job skills, work experience and learn what technology will help them do their job better,” said Julie Kehrig the Career and Employment Specialist at Vision Loss Rehabilitation Saskatchewan, a CNIB organization. “But this is only one part of the equation,” said Kehrig, “We also need employers to see how easy it is to employ people with sight loss, so we break down any barriers that still exist.” In a recent survey of blind and partially sighted adults across three countries, results showed Australia had the lowest

full-time employment rate at 24 per cent, followed by Canada at 28 per cent, while New Zealand had the highest with only 32 per cent. However, the full-time employment rate among the general public in these countries is, in some cases, nearly double that. “These low employment rates just reflect a lack of understanding. We can help employers with workplace accommodations that will allow them to employ people with sight loss enabling them to gain a potential life long employee like Andreas,” said Kehrig. “I just want others with sight loss to have the confidence I have found. CNIB helped me realize there is so much I can do that I didn’t realize I could before,” said Andreas. About CNIB Celebrating 100 years in 2018, CNIB is a nonprofit organization driven to change what it is to be blind today. We deliver innovative programs and powerful advocacy that empower people impacted by blindness to live their dreams while tearing down barriers to inclusion. Our work is powered by a network of volunteers, donors and partners from coast to coast to coast. To learn more or get involved, visit cnib.ca. Vision Loss Rehabilitation Saskatchewan Vision Loss Rehabilitation Saskatchewan is the province’s leading provider of rehabilitation therapy for people with sight loss. By Dana Jackson Q: I just saw that actress Jessica Chastain had a baby. Is she married? I must have missed this. She’s my favorite actress. — B.R. A: Ever since her Best Supporting Actress nomination for “The Help” in 2011, Jessica Chastain has been on a roll. The talented actress earned a second Oscar nomination for her leading role in the wartime drama “Zero Dark Thirty.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Arian penchant for impatience shows, as you consider passing a problem-prone project on to someone else. Best advice: Stay with it and work out those snarls yourself. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Even patient Bovines can be frustrated when carefully made plans go awry. But crank up that “stick-to-it-ivity” you do so well, and you’ll soon find that your schedule is back in sync. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your aspect favors using more resourceful means in dealing with a workplace situation. Some discreet checking around could help shed light on the root cause of the problem. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You show an unusually strong streak of stubbornness in rejecting suggestions from friends and/or family members early in the week. But you become more receptive by the week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat might

Her career has been so successful that we forget she has a personal life, having married fashion executive Gian Luca de Preposulo, who also is an Italian count, in the summer of 2017. They welcomed baby girl, Giulietta, via surrogate this past April. As for Chastain’s career, she has a slew of movies coming up, including next year’s X-Men film “Dark Phoenix” and the sequel “It: Chapter Two,” in which the kids from Derry, Maine, are all grown up and face off against Pennywise the Clown once again. Q: Some time ago, we were able to get the British shows “As Time

find a gentler approach more effective when dealing with those who resist needed changes. Remember, the word “persuasion” starts with the sound “purr.” VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A disappointing experience with someone you felt you could trust can be painful. But there just might be more to this situation than you’re aware of. Press for an explanation. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Changing your views about something you believe in isn’t easy. But you might reconsider as the facts come in. Keep your mind open, even if you’re uneasy about what

Goes By” and “Keeping Up Appearances” on one of our local channels. Do you know why they were removed? We have Spectrum TV, which used

to be called Time Warner. — Carole M. A: For those who haven’t had the pleasure of watching these British gems, “As Time Goes By” ran from 1992 to 2005 and starred Oscar-winner Judi Dench, while “Keeping Up Appearances” ran from 1990 to 1995 and starred Patricia Routledge. It is BBC Worldwide’s most exported television program. If neither show is available on your local PBS station or another network, you might want to consider paying a monthly fee for Amazon Prime and signing up for its BritBox subscription. BritBox offers a slew of BBC series, includ-

ing your two favorites. If you don’t have a streaming device such as an Amazon Fire Stick to plug into your TV, you can watch them on your computer or tablet at www. Britbox.com. You can purchase a Fire Stick or other streaming device like Roku almost anywhere, specifically Walmart or Target. It should come with some easy instructions, but if you have a friend or relative who is knowledgeable about such things, enlist their help. In the meantime, call or write your cable company’s local office to ask about your favorite shows and see if they are coming back.

Q: On “Blue Bloods,” first Danny’s house blows up, then his wife is killed, and now his oldest son is gone. Is the son dead too? — J.P.M. A: Even though Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) has had a lot of bad luck lately, his son Jack appears to still be breathing. According to CountryLiving.com, when Jack went off to college, his portrayer, actor Tony Terraciano did too. CBS reported that he hasn’t been written off “Blue Bloods” and will appear as his school schedule permits. “Blue Bloods” is now in its ninth season on CBS. you might learn. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some serious shifting of gears to get your project back on track. But cheer up. Your hard work starts to produce some positive results by the week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unsettling mood at

the start of the week soon lifts and gives way to a more positive attitude as you find fun and friendship beginning to dominate your aspect. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) A delay in firming up holiday plans could work to your advantage. Use this time to scout out possibilities that might be more in

line with what those close to you would prefer. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some people might question some of the new friends you’ve welcomed into your life. But your ability to see beyond the obvious helps you recognize how special they are. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial

matters can be especially tricky this week. It’s best to follow a conservative investment path for now, and wait for a more fortuitous time to take a bolder approach. BORN THIS WEEK: Your warmth, your humor and your genuine concern for others make you someone people love to keep close to their lives.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing about platelet donations. As a way of giving back, I donate platelets. I was wondering if there is a time that a person should stop donating, based on age or difficulty. I am 61 years old, and the past three times I’ve donated, I felt uncomfortable in some way. Either my arm or wrist hurt, or I had a feeling of malaise during the donating process. One time, I was told that my platelet count was on the low side, but it was not any danger to my wellbeing. I feel well immediately afterward and do not have health issues, so my concern is whether this

is somehow detrimental to my own health as I age. — S.B. ANSWER: Platelet donation generally is a very well-tolerated procedure. The platelets are removed from the donor’s blood via a process called apheresis; a centrifuge separates the blood into four components: plasma (containing proteins), platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells. For platelet donors, just the platelets are removed, and the rest of the blood components are returned to the donor. In order to keep the blood from clotting inside the machine, sodium citrate is added to the apheresis machine. This reduces the calcium, which is needed for blood clotting. However, some people can develop symptoms of low calcium during the apheresis. This can be treated by slowing the rate of donation, or by taking some oral calcium before donating. More-severe

cases might require giving intravenous calcium to the patient via another IV catheter. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that people make no more than 24 donations per year, but there is good evidence that platelet donation is safe. I congratulate you on being a community-minded citizen, and I can reassure you that you have very little short-term risk and essentially zero long-term risk from donating platelets, whatever your age. Donate as often as is comfortable, and try taking a calcium supplement before donating. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken 5 mg zolpidem (Ambien) nightly for about three years. My doctor seems to think this is acceptable. I sleep five to six hours with this aid and function normally in the morning. Recently I was told that this drug has a cumulative effect on the body. Carbon monoxide safety tips (NC) — Snow and ice create dangerous conditions for those who venture outside during the winter, but we often forget about dangers indoors, such as carbon monoxide poisoning. Often known as “the silent killer,” CO is a colourless and odourless gas that is impossible to detect without an alarm. In fact, according to Statistics Canada, carbon monoxide poisoning is the number one cause of accidental poisoning in the country and is responsible for more than 300 deaths annually. Here are tips to keep your loved ones safe through winter: Eliminate CO at the source. Have a professional check fuel-burning appliances — like your furnace, stove, water heater and clothes dryer — for leaks and annual maintenance. Never use generators indoors. In the case of a power outage or furnace failure, both gas-powered and portable electric

generators must only be used outside. Never use them inside the home, in a garage or any confined area where CO can collect. Install alarms. Carbon monoxide alarms are the only way to detect this poisonous gas, yet a recent survey revealed over half of Canadians report not having CO alarms in their homes. “Searching” (R) — John Cho stars as David, a widower whose 16-year-old daughter disappears after a study group. Although he enlists the help of a police detective (Debra Messing), the physical trail goes cold, and he begins to follow his daughter’s digital footprint — hacking her computer, contacts, messages, etc. All is not as he had believed, and it’s a switchback trail of leads, twists, turns and heartstopping suspense. Filmed and shown via found footage style: YouTube videos, Skypes and chat screens, it marks the debut of director Aneesh Chaganty, who looks to be off to a great start in owning this genre. “The Little Stranger” (R) — The imposing manor house where Dr. Faraday’s (Domnhall Gleeson) mother worked was a place of

reverence in his childhood memories, but Hundreds Hall has turned to a cold shell of itself when he returns 30 years later to care for the manor’s inhabitants. Mrs. Ayers (Charlotte Rampling) is the matriarch. Her son Roderick (Will Poulter) is disturbed and convinced the house is angry with the family; and daughter Caroline (Ruth Wilson) carries a tragic past. As more unexplained phenomena occur, and as the relationships between Dr. Faraday and the family develop, the link between past and present blurs. “At First Light” (NR) — Stefanie Scott and Theodore Pelerine star as Alex and Sean in this young adult, first contact with aliens love story. Alex has a run in with a supernatural force that leaves her with newfound powers, while Sean is the friend with the heart of gold who will stick by her throughout her ordeal. What the film lacks is chemistry between the leads, and an original storyline. On

the bright side, it’s wellshot and there’s definitely enough suspense and action to fill in as a fun afternoon flick during holiday break. Written and directed by Jason Stone. DVD DOUBLE FEATURE “Christmas With a Prince” and “Hometown Holiday” (NR) — On the DVD equivalent of a slow news day, and it being the season for holiday romances, here are two brandnew Harlequin romances: Up first, “Christmas With a Prince,” where Kaitlyn Leeb plays Dr. Miller, a pediatrician whose focus is on the kids. On the local ski slopes, Prince Alexander (Nick Houndslow) takes a fall and is secreted to the pediatric wing to convalesce. The doctor doesn’t agree with the distraction, but there’s something about healing that makes the heart race. Then in “Hometown Holiday,” record exec Ryan Rourke (Bradley Hamilton) is seeking the next big thing, but when he comes to Krista’s (Sarah Troyer) hometown

to sign a local singer, the pair start a different kind of collaboration. NEW TV RELEASES “Sharp Objects” “The 100” Season 5 “Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume Eight” “Tales of the Abyss” The Complete Series

When Nat King Cole sings “chestnuts roasting on an open fire,” he’s referring to the starchy, sweet and flavorful chestnut, which is an edible nut from a tree native to the northern hemisphere. Chestnuts belong to the beech or Fagaceae family of trees, which are native to the mountainous forests of China, Japan, Europe, and North America. Chestnuts were once staples of North American diets because they could be found quite

readily along the Eastern seaboard, where many early settlers first landed their ships. Chestnuts were once the most popular ingredient in 18th and 19th cuisine and became widely linked to Christmas dinner. Early American chestnuts were small and flavorful and were abundant in late fall. Chestnuts once had a sweet flavor when eaten raw. However, they took on a nutty essence when roasted. Chestnut street vendors could be found sending off wafting aromas of inviting chestnuts from corner to corner. Unfortunately, a chestnut tree blight in the early 20th century decimated nearly all American Chestnut trees, leading to the demise of the domestic chestnut industry — and perhaps contributing to a declining interest in chest-

Cool-weather treat Many nuts get plenty of fanfare, from the almond to the walnut to the peanut — which isn’t even a nut at all! However, without the familiar holiday tune “The Christmas Song,” many folks may not even know about a relatively obscure nut that tends to only turn up around the holiday season.

nuts with winter meals. Today, most chestnuts are imported from Korea, China and Italy. The Agricultural Marketing Resource Center reports that American chestnut production is less than 1 percent of total world production. The United States has 919 farms producing chestnuts on more than 3,700 acres. There may be hope for reviving interest in chestnuts as new research is trying to prevent the Asian blight that wiped out trees long ago. Chestnuts traditionally pop up in stores during the holiday season. Unlike other nuts and seeds, they are relatively low in calories or fats, but are a rich source of minerals, vitamins and dietary fiber. They can be incorporated into many different meals and are worthy additions to a healthy diet.

It seems that the groom felt the bride was taking too long in the airport restroom, so he boarded the flight back to Saudi Arabia before she did. When he allowed the plane to leave without her, she insisted on an immediate divorce. • Most people don’t realize that in 1938, Time

However, one superstition holds that doing so is perfectly acceptable — as long as the ring is being used to ward off a witch. • Ever wonder why magazine publisher Hugh Hefner chose a rabbit as the symbol of his Playboy magazine? Evidently, when the mogul was a small boy one of his treasured possessions was a blanket with bunnies all over it. Beat in vanilla extract. Place large star tube (about 1/2 inch in diameter) into large decorating bag. To make stripe effect, with artist’s paintbrush, and using slightly less than 1/8 teaspoon of each food coloring paste, alternately brush 2 lengthwise stripes of red food coloring paste and 2 lengthwise stripes of green food coloring paste inside decorating bag.
