SHHS Valedictory Address

By Belén Reed and Jon Fetsch Good afternoon reverend Fathers and Sisters, families, friends, teachers, honoured guests, school board members, and the graduating class of 2022. It is an honour for us to speak as co-valedictorians. We’re happy to take part in the amazing traditions of a school that is over 100 years old. The Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate and the Redemptorist Fathers established this school in 1917. We are extremely blessed to be a part of 105 years of history. Grade 9 was a puzzle. We walked through Sacred Heart’s doors not knowing what would come next. There were so many uncertainties. Who would we sit with at lunch? What would we wear? What would people think if we wore a blue shirt instead of a green one? Would people laugh at us? Would we be intimidated in the hallways by the seniors? What if we got lost? Throughout our years, we slowly began to see the bigger picture. We learned that it was impossible to get lost, and no one would laugh at you if you wore a blue shirt instead of a green one. I wouldn’t test my luck with a raiders shirt though. More importantly, we learned that there were people who would help us fit in along the way. They would help us solve our puzzle. High School was a puzzle, just like…. A wordle. THANK I want to say how excited I am to be here. A huge thank you to all the parents and staff who spent their personal time making this grad a special day for us. If we have ever asked you to help us with an essay, reference letter, application or scholarship, thank you! (My mom probably never wants me to apply for anything ever again.) If you have ever convinced us to try out for that sport or go to that club meeting at lunch, thank

you. Thanks for consoling us when we felt like we would never be able to get through our mountains of homework, or letting us come into your classroom when we were feeling overwhelmed. If you have ever listened to us sing our songs from the musical over and over and over again, thank you. I'm grateful for all of the times that Ms. Sterzuk told us EXACTLY what to pack for cross-country meets, down to the amount of socks, along with a detailed hourly weather forecast. You might think that the biggest moment of a grade 12 volleyball season would be a great hit or a phenomenal block, but you would be wrong. Hands down, the best prize for making it to Grade 12 is when you're sitting in the van, riding to a tournament, and Mr. Enns finally confides his biggest secret… His middle name. Don't even think about asking me! I won't tell. Mr. Enns and Ms. Sterzuk aren't the only ones who have been generous with us.

Congratulations Graduates! To accomplish GREAT things, we must not only act, but also DREAM, not only plan, but also BELIEVE.

Continued from Page 2 There are so many more coaches, directors, and teacher supervisors here tonight. They have spent hours on icy roads, through storms, tolerating our terrible van-jokes. They have pushed us through days of practices, meetings, and rehearsals making sure we got the play, scene, or yearbook page just right. I take none of this for granted. We would not have been able to do this without all of you. FAITH Most of all, we should show our sincerest gratitude to God, who has given us this incredible opportunity to be here today, standing in front of you as you watch with pride as your son, daughter, sibling, cousin, or grandchild reaches this great milestone in life. He is the One who has been with us all these years, guiding us and directing our decisions, and helping us to end up where we are right now. After all the celebrations are over, and the pictures are taken, we will be confronted with a huge responsibility. A responsibility to become people of integrity, maturity, honesty, but most importantly faith. We must not allow ourselves to lose our way, and we have to always strive to be the best people we can be. Something my parents taught me is that no matter what we do in life, if we put God first, things will work out in the end. Take care of God first, and he’ll take care of you. During your lowest moments in life, He will be the one who carries you on the sand. You don’t have to tread the spooky, unpredictable future alone. God has a plan for all of us, and I hope that one day, every person here will come to realize that. LAUGH These four years have been packed with fond memories. Remember when we thought we would never get through our chemistry review? So we took it along to our volley-

ball tournament and worked on it between games… Like total nerds. You know what else I won't forget? Being shoulder to shoulder in a kicking routine during the musical Madagascar. Or when we were told we needed to do an improvised ballet dance on stage. Keep in mind very few of us have any formal dance training. Ms Senko, Mrs Blenkin, and Ms Sterzuk just told us to go for it. It all worked out, or at least that's what they made us believe. I'm sure that none of us will ever forget the infamous JC beach runs. Mr. Jonasson insists that he told us the right directions, but when we got lost in grade 9, it did not feel like our fault. The total fear that gripped me when Mr. Grela yelled out randomly in class and then made us throw eggs around the room was unforgettable. This was in Physics, and although I'm sure the concept he was teaching us was fascinating, what was more entertaining was watching the faces of the people holding the sheet the eggs were being thrown at. I will always remember when Ms. Kirschman made us cut up and find the volume of lemons to teach us integrals. The lemon juice was dripping down my hands when she told us that we would get bonus points if we took a picture of ourselves at a funeral for our lemons. She did not need to tell me twice. That night I got straight to embalming. Mme. Barton, do you remember when you interrupted our English final “just to chat?” Because I sure do. Sometimes I wonder if you know more about our lives than our own parents. This is what makes Sacred Heart special. I don't think that every school has teachers who end up feeling more like extended family by the end of four years. Continued on Page 4

VALEDICTORY Continued from Page 3 LEARN Speaking of our incredible teachers, where would we be without them? From Grade 9 to Grade 12, we have grown so much over the years, and a huge factor comes down to our outstanding supervisors and educators, who led us along the way. From all the wacky experiments in Mr. Grela’s science classes, the court trials and world domination board games in Mr. Enns’ classes, learning how to correctly use a semicolon in Mrs. Moen’s English, or learning how to do debates in Grade 9 in Mrs. Jonassen’s Social Studies, (shout out to Ainsly for proving that the Earth was round, I will never forget that debate, ever), some lessons will never be forgotten. If all of us were to compare ourselves in Grade 9 to ourselves in Grade 12, I don’t think a single person in our class could truthfully tell me that they didn’t grow at all during these 4 years. Every one of us has grown as a person, whether this be by maturity, intellectual growth, mental strength, or even just physical development. We all have become different people to who we were in Grade 9, and we will continue to grow as people after High School. I truly and sincerely hope that High School has been an opportunity for all the Graduates here to learn and grow from being immature niners, into young adults ready to face the world head on. DREAM Ok. So this is the part of the speech where I should be inspiring and tell you all what I want the world to look like, but I can’t do that in a few sentences. Because everyone has something different ahead of them. Everyone has their unique way that they are going to contribute, and their own hopes and visions for their life. If you take a quick survey of our class you will learn that some of us are dreaming of becoming mechanics, software engineers, dental hygienists, teachers, neurosurgeons, fashion designers, parents, pharmacists, phlebotomists, musicians, and much more. Some of us have no idea of what's ahead, or even where to start. Sacred Heart has shaped us to be who we were designed to be in our own ways… no matter what that looks like. During the next couple of years, there are going to be many exciting moments, but none of us are going to have a perfectly easy path. In fact, some of us are going to experience harder things than we could ever imagine. We will feel

frustrated, overwhelmed, or lonely, whether we are stocking shelves, travelling the world, or sitting in a dorm room. This is when we will need to be gritty and hold onto hope the most. These will be the times when our dreams will make the biggest difference. ADIEU This is the time for goodbyes. “Can you guys guess what the word is? Mr. Chisholm will give 10 bucks to whoever can guess it”. Well guys, I guess this is the end. We made it. We solved the puzzle. We must say goodbye to the spacious hallways, the pep rallies, the intramurals at noon, the sports teams we made so many memories with, and the amazing teachers who made Sacred Heart feel like a second home to us. As we move on after High School, our lives will not become any easier. We are so grateful to all the people who have helped us make it this far, but just like Mr. Grela says, we can’t have our hands held forever. This is the time where we separate. It’s up to us to take it from here. This may be goodbye, but I hope to see you all again. If not in this life, then maybe in the next. Thank you very much and God Bless.

YRHS Valedictory Address By Brendan Irvine Good afternoon everyone. I am honoured to stand before you as the Yorkton Regional High School Valedictorian of the Class of 2022. My father, aunt, and uncles went to this school and graduated from here as I do today, and my grandmother and grandfather both taught at this school. As such, I am proud to be a part of this school’s legacy. I want to begin with a thank you to all our parents, siblings, caregivers, and other relatives for being here today. By being with us for every challenge, you have helped each and every one of us make it to the point we are at today. Everyone has a different experience with family, but at the end of the day, none of us could be standing here without those of you who raised us. I wish to give a special thanks to my own parents, sibling, and grandmothers, for being here today, and to my relatives who are tuning into the stream. Many of us are ready to move on from Yorkton this year and as such move away from our family who live around here. While today is a day of moving forward, it is important to not forget what we are leaving behind. Family has been very important to our success and our success moving forward relies on them still. Thank you all for what you have done and for what you will do as well. I will also extend a thanks to the teachers and staff who helped us get to this moment but specifically to those at the Yorkton Regional High School. The team at the YRHS is dedicated to the success of the students. I

feel as if these people do not see this as just a job but as their purpose. Over the last three years, amidst a pandemic, online learning, and complicated schedules, this staff has ensured that all of us were able to be here today and move on in the world. While Brendan Irvine they only have but Valedictorian a fleeting time in Class of 2022 the grand scheme of our lives, there are many teachers in this building whom I will remember for the rest of my life. We have come a long way from writing finals in grade 9, learning what “Zoom” was in grade 10, trying to understand the Pent system in grade 11, and then trying to understand the Quad system this year. Yet throughout our journey, this staff has been here at our sides and has pushed forwards with us, ensuring that nothing stood in our way. Thank you all for the support you have given us. The reason we are all here today, however, is the class of 2022, my class. I do not know each of you personally, but I am nonetheless honoured to represent you today. We together have overcome so much in the last four years and I am so proud of all of us for making it through despite these Continued on Page 14

VALEDICTORY Continued from Page 13 challenges. Our worlds started so small back in elementary school, we once couldn’t even imagine what high school was like. It seemed like it was so far away. Yet here we are, having met many new people and made many new friends in high school, friends we will have for the rest of our lives. I am only one student, but ask any of us, and I assure you we will all say something similar to this. Today is the biggest day in our lives thus far. While our worlds have slowly gotten bigger - our first day of school, our transition to high school, maybe we moved cities, or started a new job - today it all changes, more than we can understand presently. We go our separate ways today, but we can take what we’ve all learned together and keep it

close. I know some of us are going into postsecondary school, pursuing another form of education, or entering the work-force, and I’m sure a few of us have no idea what we’re going to do. I believe that's the beauty of it all. I can’t tell you what I’ll be doing in 40 years, or even 10, or possibly even a single year from now, but what I do know is that every single graduate on this stage is strong and smart, and that each of us will change this world for the better. These last four years have flown by and they have changed our lives. I could not possibly be more thankful for all of you. This may seem like the end my friends, but it's not. YRHS from 1993-96. He was a formidable part of high school drama and band. Brock also excelled academically and was someone who gave others the courage to be themselves. He was full of humour, full of life, and loved his friends. Brock also worked hard to strive for a higher education. He received a Bachelors in Film Studies from the University of Regina in 2000, a Journalism degree from Ryerson in Toronto in 2002, and a Master of Arts from the University of British Columbia in 2005. In his final years, Brock's zest for life was overturned by his ongoing battle with mental health and addictions - - a situation that worsened during the pandemic, and a problem that he kept to himself. Brock was extremely isolated and lost his battle in June of 2021. This award is to honor his joyful spirit and his life's work - creating this award to highlight the importance of speaking up and being open with each other about mental health and wellbeing.
