Tourism Facilities When it comes to hosting an event, whether it’s a business meeting, a major convention, wedding, or sporting event, Yorkton has the facilities. “That’s one of the great things about a city like Yorkton, its small enough anyone coming into an event can find their way around easily, but we are large enough to have a full range of quality services,” said Tourism Yorkton Executive Director Randy Goulden. Goulden said it starts with accommodations and food. “Whether you need a room for a night, or to book 100 rooms for a convention Yorkton has a number of fine hotels and motels,” she said. “And our restaurants range from, providing burgers on the go as you travel, to those offering fine dining. “There are of course private areas in some of the restaurants for small meetings as well.” When it comes to larger gatherings, that perfect wedding,
or fraternal convention, Yorkton has the facilities for that too. The Painted Hand Casino, SIGN on Broadway, St. Mary’s Cultural Centre, Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre and the City’s own Gallagher Centre all have spaces to accommodate gatherings from just a few intimate friends, to a high level business gathering, to provincial conventions. “We’re fortunate in Yorkton to have such a range of facilities,” said Goulden. “It has allowed the city to be the site of events from the Parkland Expo and Sunflower Craft Show & Sale, the annual SUN convention and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation convention.” Should someone need a little help planning an event in the city Tourism Yorkton can help there as well. They have a Convention and Event Planning Guide and a Wedding Planning Guide on their website; www.tourismyorkton.com
Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling is back. The Gallagher Centre will be host to the Meridian Canadian Open, which will take place on Jan. 14-19 2020. This is the third time that Yorkton will host a Grand Slam event. The previous two Meridian Canadian Opens hosted in the city took place in 2014 and 2015. The reigning champions are Edmonton’s Team Brendan Bottcher and Ottawa’s Team Rachel Homan. The event features a triple knockout playoff setup. Teams
must win three games before losing three in order to reach the finals. Sixteen men’s and sixteen women’s teams will compete for the title, and continue on their quest for the Pinty’s Cup, awarded to overall season champions. Winners of the Meridian Canadian Open also receive berths to the season-ending Humpty’s Champions Cup, April 21-26, 2020.

meaganamy Blake Reid Band - Wednesday, January 22, 2020 — The Blake Reid Band pays homage to the craft of making authentic music rooted in the traditions of country and great storytelling. While incorporating flavors of folk, roots, red dirt, swamp, bluegrass, Americana, rock n roll, outlaw country and more. The Blake Reid Band stays true to the story and, in doing so, whether you were raised in the deep south of the USA, the evergreen forests of Northern Canada, the countryside of the UK, or anywhere in between, their sound, their energy, their stories, will awaken your heart, stir your soul and take you home.www.blakereidband.com Don Amero - Tuesday, February 25, 2020 — An evening with Don Amero is a new take on the classic travelling troubadour. With a combination of original music and classic covers like Blue Rodeo’s “Try”, it falls somewhere between a family friendly stand up comedy show and an intimate concert. Between the witty banter, laughs, heartfelt music and inspiring stories, it is an experience for the whole family. Don believes that music is medicine and reaches a depth of the soul that no prescription can offer. We’ve all felt the power of a melody, lyric or song - it has an almost supernatural ability to move us on an emotional level. In his performance Don takes the listener on a emotional journey - leaving the audience encouraged and inspired to take better care of themselves and others. From the stage, he shares the joys and pitfalls of being a husband, father and musician in today’s world. With a heavy dose of humour, he connects with an easy and effortless charm as he shares his real life stories and songs with his audience. donamero.ca Continued on Page 7

They have toured worldwide and will be celebrating their 20th year as a group in 2019. “Madison Violet has suddenly appeared like a ray of sunshine on a rainy day.” - No Depression Magazine. “In the end, it’s all about the vocals. The playing is top-rate, especially Cape Breton-er Lisa MacIsaac’s native and familial skill on the fiddle and all stringed things, but the harmony blend between the two is arresting.” – CBC www.madisonviolet.com Canada’s Ballet Jorgen: “Anne of Green Gables –The Ballet TM” Friday, March 20, 2020 — Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™ is a playful, colourful and evocative production that will transport audiences to early 20th century Atlantic Canada. Based on the beloved Canadian novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™ follows the adventures of Anne Shirley, an orphan girl sent to live on a farm in the fictional town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. As a child of imagination, Anne takes much joy in life and adapts quickly, thriving in the close-knit farming village. Her imagination and talkativeness soon brighten up Green Gables. www.canadasballetjorgen.ca/ Christine Tassan et les Imposteures - Monday, April 6, 2020 — With a decade and a half of bringing their special blend of Gypsy jazz and revisited cover songs to audiences, Christine Tassan et les Imposteures have made a name for themselves on the music scene. The latest show of these four exquisitely talented female musicians brings together some of the best works by Django Reinhardt, Félix Leclerc and American swing composers. With a singular mix of virtuosity, daring and humour, the four-woman string band draws inspiration from one artist’s poetry and the other’s swing to weave a rich new musical universe, an ode to freedom and creativity. www.christinetassanetlesimposteures.com FILM Open Cinema – “No Roads in” - Tuesday January 21, 2020, 7:00 p.m. at the Yorkton Public library — The Yorkton Film Festival’s screening program which brings great film to the citizens of Yorkton will partner with the Yorkton Arts Council to present documentary “No Roads In” a musical journey for singer/songwriter Blake Reid, sound engineer Adam Naugler and the musicians of the Blake Reid Band. Their paths are brought together by the very basis of musical inspiration. They have a common desire to reconsider what

is really important in music, and in life. Together they find the faith to explore a process of making music that does not rely on advanced digital recording technologies, controlled studio environments, or commercial expectations, but rather, more closely resembles the way they feel music was meant to be created and shared. It’s the telling of stories, together, as friends, in a place with soul, in harmony with the elements, live, in-the-pocket, authentic, and captured entirely in the moment. There is a place that Adam had discovered a few years back, a place that spoke to him, a special place, it had been pulling at him ever since he’d first found it. It was this very place that started Adam on this journey, but this place would come with many challenges. Standing empty for almost 80 years, in the middle of a thousand acres of prairie wheat field, this long-forgotten farmstead is brought back to life, helping to capture the love, laughter and raw energy of 13 songs recorded live-off-the-floor over 5 summer days in Western Canada. The house, the wheat, and the wind were natures instruments and the journey was filled with challenges and uncertainty. The songs are not played technically perfect, but the acoustic performances captured in the amazing old house, with the people, the wind, the wheat, and all the elements are completely pure, and that makes them all more than perfect. The guys found magic within that old house. Q & A with the band will follow the screening.

pARTners Gallery
The Community pARTners Gallery located in the Yorkton Public Library displays local and emerging artists and artwork touring through OSAC’s “Art on the Move”. September - October 23 2019 - Emma Lake Archive – OSAC Arts on the Move — The University of Saskatchewan’s Emma Lake Kenderdine Campus is of great importance to the people of Saskatchewan. Hundreds have attended the summer workshops for visual arts, music and science as a part of their university education, as professional art development or to pursue a passionate interest. The site holds a place in Canadian art history as the site of the infamous Emma Lake artist workshops, hosting dozens of lead artists ranging from Barnett Newman to Frank Stella. In the early fall of 2012, Cameron Forbes and Crystal Bueckert were invited to visit the Emma Lake as artists in residence. Their intent was to document the buildings that make up the campus. Bueckert and Forbes were drawn to the eclectic architecture styles, the state of disrepair and miniature nature of the buildings. The buildings themselves held a certain energy - they were containers for stories. Forbes painted the interior of the buildings and their parts while Bueckert created as-built, scaled architectural drawings of each building. Not knowing it at the time, they were to be the last artists in residence to date. The work they made from this period has been compiled into a book “Emma Lake Archive”. There is no other archive like this of the Campus. The fact that these works are hand drawn and painted brings them into a different space than blueprints or computer renderings. The two different drawing styles engage with one another to create a more atmospheric, spatial experience. Recognizing an important part of Saskatchewan’s cultural history, this exhibition will be relevant to the interests of the communities it will travel to. November- December 2019 – Scissor Cuts - OSAC Arts on the Move — A special partnership with the Saskatchewan
German Council. Toured through OSAC’s Arts on the Move program. Scherenschnitte (scissor cuts) is an art form where silhouettes are cut from one piece of special black paper with scissors or knives with no ‘hangers’- unattached pieces. Scissor cutting has a long history in German folk art; immigrants brought Scherenschnitte to North America in the 17th Century. Reflecting the Canadian artists in Scissor Cuts/ Scherenschnitte, this collection of works ranges from traditional German Scherenschnitte represented by Waltraude Stehwien, a German immigrant, to papercut evolved into sculpture by Jess Richter- second generation born in Canada. Employing creativity to express a landscape, scene and image with cut paper requires precision in drawing as well as dexterity of cutting. Stehwien prefers scissors as they ‘bite’ the paper; designing her pieces by drawing out her complete design, reworking it on the back of the traditional black paper before making any cuts. While Stehwien enjoys the challenging restrictions of traditional Scherenschnitte, Richter explores all that paper can do. Richter, preferring the Exacto knife, works more organically, creating pieces for her sculptures as she goes. Neither artist likes using computers in their art. In Stehwien’s opinion “Computers are remote. Art is sensual.” Richter reluctantly learned computer drafting for her MFA degree from the UofR but prefers the ‘tactileness’ of pencil (or knife) to paper. January – February 2020 – A Rightful Place - OSAC Arts on the Move — Together with Common Weal Community Arts, OSAC is proud to offer A Rightful Place to tour throughout Saskatchewan. Toured through OSAC’s Arts on the Move program. Migration is at the heart of the human experience. We know that throughout history, people have undertaken significant migrations that have shaped the world we now Continued on Page 9

Today, around the world, migration continues in its myriad forms, but the resistance many immigrants encounter on arrival in a new place continues as well. This negativity, aggravated by such things as a potentially depressed economy or a fear of terrorism, can sometimes make migrants scapegoats. The benefits of the acceptance of newcomers and their cultural contribution and perspectives to our society is often lost. A Rightful Place was created as an effort to stimulate connection with and acceptance of newcomers amongst local communities. While tensions between locals and immigrants may arise for a variety of reasons, too often it is simply a lack of understanding and familiarity which gives rise to problematic stereotypes and misunderstanding between groups. The A Rightful Place Project was a two-year multidisciplinary art and social justice project, in which the lives and migration experiences faced by newcomers were documented through portraits and personal narratives of the newcomers. Due to the current high level of fear and distrust of immigrants that is being promoted by some in our society, it is our belief that sharing these personal images and stories as widely as possible is vital to the Saskatchewan community at large.

March - April 2020 - I do not have my words OSAC Arts on the Move — Curated and organized by the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery with funding assistance from the City of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan Arts Board, SaskCulture, Saskatchewan Lotteries, and the Canada Council for the Arts. The exhibition, I do not have my words, features printmaking, photography, sculpture and beaded, mixed media works by Indigenous, Saskatchewan artists, Joi Arcand, Catherine Blackburn and Audrey Dreaver. Each artist’s body of works explore language loss and considers how language is connected to one’s cultural identity.
Catholic Elementary Schools:
Joi Arcand explores the interruption of intergenerational language-learning, as a result of the residential school system and other colonial attempts to remove Indigenous culture, through the revitalization of the Cree language. Emphasizing the discontinuation of the language within Arcand’s own family by rendering it hyper-visible in location and material, the work further questions how the public presence of language is connected to acknowledging Indigenous peoples. Catherine Blackburn’s art practice is informed by her Dene and European ancestry, considering Canada’s colonial past through her personal relationships and life experiences. The pieces in, I do not have my words, use media, traditional materials, like beading, and artistic processes that connect to the various themes and histories Blackburn explores in the work, including the Dene language. Audrey Dreaver’s prints document her research into her family’s history of Cree language loss and consider how this loss has impacted her cultural identity as a Cree woman. In this exploration, Dreaver poses questions: How did my family come to lose our language? Is your language who you are? Does my inability to speak my language mean that I am less Cree? The artist invites viewers to engage in her exploration and consider if language loss affects identity by breaking continuity with one’s past and culture.

Tourism Winter Fun It’s winter, but even though the city is full of snow with cold temperatures, don’t think for a minute that there isn’t anything for tourists to do in Yorkton. “Yorkton remains an active city even when the temperatures dip,” said Tourism Yorkton manager Randy Goulden. “There’s always something to do to enjoy even on the coldest of days.” What can visitors to Yorkton do to enjoy the winter months here? “You can start by enjoying the varied cuisine available in the city,” she said. “We’ve always had fine restaurants, but in recent years we have seen greater diversity in menus which is reflective of the growing ethnic diversity in the city. “Whether you’re looking for a good steak, great pub fare, pasta, or something a bit more adventurous like sushi, you will find it in Yorkton,” she said. Besides, you’ll want to have a hearty meal so you’re ready for the adventures the city has in store. “The Yorkton branch of the Western Developent Museum tells the story of immigration to Saskatchewan, and should be on every visitors’ to do list,” said Goulden. “The displays are great, and a video theatre really enhances the experience of learning about our province’s history.” The Yorkton WDM’s winter hours are: August to Dec. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Monday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 pm weekends, closed on statutory holidays. From January to March the hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and closed Mondays and statutory holidays. If art is more your speed the Godfrey Dean Gallery is the place to visit. “The Gallery is really a gem for a city our size,” said Goulden. “Shows often highlight artists noted across Canada, but there is also a dedication to showcase local art. It’s a great balance which provides some extraordinary shows.” The Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Gallagher Centre is also a place to check out on any visit to the city. “The Access Communications Water Park is a tourist draw on its own,” said Goulden. “The water slide, wave pool and whirlpool are all favourites with swimmers.” For more info please call (306) 786-1740 or email gallagherkiosk@yorkton.ca for hours of operation.

The Gallagher Centre is also home to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s defending champion Terriers and minor hockey teams across all age groups. “The curling rink hosts some great action over the winter too,” offered Goulden. And the Nexera Flexihall has a walking track for those wanting some exercise away from the snow, and often hosts trade shows and events. If you enjoy the outdoors in winter, Yorkton offers many options to get out with nature. “There is cross country skiing at Deer Park Golf Course, and families love Rodney Ridge as a place to toboggan,” said Goulden. The city is also the hub of an extensive snowmobile trail system which covers most of East Central Saskatchewan, and beyond. “Snowmobiling is a very popular winter activity, and the well kept trail system extends right into the city so riders have access to services such as restaurants, fuel and lodging,” said Goulden. Then to end the day there is usually music and entertainment to be found in the city. “The Yorkton Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan offers a pretty diverse group of concerts each season,” said Goulden. There are always other festivals and events going on in the city, most listed in this booklet, or on the Tourism Yorkton website at http://www.tourismyorkton.com/

The Gallagher Centre
The Gallagher Centre in Yorkton is a central gathering point for events throughout the fall and winter. When snow is blanketing the ground many look to the Access Communications Water Park for a place to relax and have fun. The Water Park features a two-story waterslide, a wave pool with zero depth beach entry, lazy river, hot tub, steam and sauna rooms and a 25-metre, five lane swimming pool. That means there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. An exciting aquatic climbing wall, which boasts one and a half stories of intense climbing for all ages, is another popular feature at the water park. Either side of the wall represents a different difficulty level and when the panels get re-arranged there are new challenges to be faced. The wall offers hours of fun for those who climb to the top – then fall into the deep water. The wall is open to the public during leisure swim times. For those looking for something less physical there are the water options, including just relaxing in hot tub, sauna and steam room. And the water park has a range of admission fees to fit all budgets, with special rates for large groups they also offer small ‘family sized’ group rates, provided 1 – 2 adults are a part of the group and new, and more affordable, monthly passes available, making it even more available for avid swimmers to visit. The Farrell Agencies Arena (FAA) is of course a focal point as the ice arena is the home of the Yorkton Figure Skating Club, Yorkton Terriers, Yorkton RawTec Maulers, and numerous minor hockey teams. In the case of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Terriers they are a perennially strong team having won backto-back league titles in 2013 and 2014, as well as winning the RBC Cup emblematic of a Canadian championship in 2014. Snowarama
Join us in Yorkton on Feb. 8, 2020, to support the 43rd Annual Easter Seals Snowarama. Yorkton’s largest snowmobile event raises money for Easter Seals Saskatchewan. Deana Jesmer, Community Relations Coordinator with SaskAbilities in Yorkton noted, “Over $2.5 million dollars has been raised for children experiencing disability in the province … “Participants and riders travel from all of the Prairie Provinces and as far as B.C. to attend Snowarama and help send kids to Camp Easter Seal. In 2019 we will celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of Snowarama!! We are so grateful for the countless people that have contributed to Snowarama’s long running success!” The funds raised support: •Camp Easter Seal; a fully wheelchair accessible summer camp •Summer Fun Program; an urban day camp focused on recreational and leisure activities in the community for children with disabilities •Adaptive Technology Services; computers and technology are used to minimize the impact of having a disability. Riders have their choice of two loops on beautifully groomed trails and receive complimentary meals, fuel for their sleds, and a chance to win a brand new snowmobile. Yorkton’s snowmobile friendly trail system means you can access city amenities right from your sled. Jesmer said it is the participants who make the event a success. “The community involvement and continued support have made Snowarama the long term success that it is,” she said. “Many of the riders participated in the very first Snowarama and

Walking Opportunities There might be a blanket of snow on the ground, but that can enhance the experience of exploring the city via a walking tour. The city is connected to the country’s longest recreational trail – The Trans Canada Trail. A newly erected pavilion serves as a lasting landmark at Logan Green Park to mark the accomplishment and visitors are welcome to stop by to view the names of local area donors who helped make the trail possible. An 18,000-kilometre recreational corridor winding its way through every province and territory – the Trans
Canada Trail links over 800 communities along its route. Walking is “… a really great way to see the area, to enjoy what we have to offer and to get some physical activity at the same time,” points out Randy Goulden, manager of Tourism Yorkton. But there are also options which focus on the rich culture of the city, including a walking tour of the city’s downtown area to view some of the historic sites, and another which highlights outdoor art. Visit www.tourismyorkton.com or stop by the Tourism office for additional walking trail opportunities.
