PICKS OF THE WEEK “A Wrinkle in Time” (PG-13) — A brilliant scientist (Chris Pine) has found the key to interdimensional travel, but goes missing mid-experiment, leaving his smart and tough young daughter Meg (Storm Reid) adrift. Meg’s precocious brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) makes contact with a charming trio of celestial mentors — Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) — who inform the kids that their dad is imprisoned by an evil force known as The It that is threatening the entire universe. Meg, Charles Wallace and the
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your creative side is enhanced by indulging yourself in as much artistic inspiration (music, art, dance, etc.) as you can fit into your schedule. Bring someone special along. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take a little restorative time out of your busy life. Go somewhere quiet this weekend. Or just close the door, turn on the answering machine and pretend you’re away. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your advice might be much in demand by family and friends this week. But reserve time for yourself to investigate a project that could have some unexpected potential. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Work-related issues demand your attention in the early part of the week. Family matters dominate Thursday and Friday. But the weekend is yours to spend as you please. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your temper in check as you deal with someone who seems to enjoy showing disrespect. Losing your Leonine cool might be just what the goader hopes to see.
Oprah Winfrey in “A Wrinkle in Time” Mrs.’s are joined by Meg’s school crush on a journey that will test the limits of belief and love in order to rescue their father. “Death Wish” (R) — An unassuming emergencyroom doctor (Bruce Willis)
goes berserker when his home is attacked, his wife killed and his daughter put into a coma. Police incompetence enrages the good doctor, who sets out to make things right with his own brand of justice.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A heated confrontation needs some cool-off time before it boils over. Better to step away than to try to win an argument where emotions overrule the facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone very special in your life finally sends that reassuring message you’ve been hoping for. You can now devote more time to the tasks you had put aside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Job pres-
sures begin to ease by week’s end, leaving you time to relax and restore your energy levels before you face next week’s emerging challenges. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your spiritual strength helps calm a friend who might be facing an unsettling change in their life. An offer to help comes from a surprising source. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) By midweek you could learn some surprising facts about an associate that might cause you to reconsider a long-held view about someone in your past. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) One of those rare-for-you darker moods sets in in the early part of the week. But by Thursday, the clouds lift
It’s not too long before his antics get caught on viral video, and he’s dubbed “The Grim Reaper.” A cautionary tale for criminals, he works his way through the list of lowlifes who have done his family wrong. It’s not deep on story intricacies so much as it’s an excuse for creative payback scenarios. In the end, the 1974 Charles Bronson original was better, but for a Friday night shoot-’em-up, Bruce Willis still delivers. “Gringo” (R) — David Oyelowo portrays Harold, a pharmaceutical company representative, Nash Edgerton’s comedic crime story set in Mexico. He’s on a business trip to a crime-ridden city dealing as a straight arrow with criminals and is mistaken for the company president and therefore subject to repeated kidnapping attempts. Somehow, he and you’re back doing nice things for people in need. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use that sharp Piscean perceptiveness to reel in more information about a promising offer so that you have the facts to back up whatever decision you make. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you prefer the status quo, you easily can adapt to change when it’s called for.
muddles his way through it all — or maybe he’s the one setting this clockwork caper in motion. The problem is, the parts of this machine are too intricate to figure out, and the many-layered storylines (the hijinks of Harold’s slick bosses, played by Joel Edgerton and Charlize Theron; a pair of happy-golucky drug mules, played by Amanda Seyfried and Harry Treadaway; a cartel that can’t shoot straight) don’t make it any easier. “Thoroughbreds” (R) — Depravity, thy name is a pair of upper-crust soulless teen girls. Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a robust ball of feelings smoothed out by a penchant for plagiarism and a vain, cruel stepfather. Amanda (Olivia Cooke) is an empty shell who euthanized her own horse and must pretend to have feelings in order to operate from day to day.
Somehow these unlikely partners bond over a shared disdain for Lily’s stepdad, whom they hatch a plot to kill. They recruit a local drug dealer (Anton Yelchin) for the task, but soon find out that crossing the line from killer instinct to killer is complicated. Lil’ free library launches in Yorkton
The city of Yorkton has its first ‘Little Free Library’, (LFL), thanks to the efforts of the Social Activism Club, (SAC), at the Yorkton Regional High School. “The first Little Free Library was built in 2009 by Todd Bol in Hudson, Wisconsin. He mounted a wooden container designed to look like a one-room schoolhouse on a post on his lawn and filled it with books as a tribute to his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Bol shared his idea with his partner, Rick Brooks, and the
tion’, explained Jordan Stewart a member of the SAC at the unveiling of the LFL Thursday. “The Little Free Library soon became a non-profit organization and currently there are more than 70,000 registered Little Free Library book-sharing boxes in 85 countries worldwide. It is our goal to become one of the registered libraries with the organization, continued Andy Mclennar, also with the SAC. With the template in place, the school group decided to take a LFL on as a project, said Katya Andersen, with the SAC.
“The Social Activism Club at the YRHS was inspired by Todd Bol and when we researched the various kinds of little libraries online we decided to create and build our own Lil’ Library for the city of Yorkton, she said. The project is not just for the school, noted SAC member Madeline Benneve. “This library is not a YRHS library, it is a Yorkton Library. Anyone passing by can take a book to read or leave one for someone else to find. The intention is to get the community and neighbourhood involved, to encourage a love for reading and to be inspired by it, and to
inspire creativity. The goal is to unite the community through literature, just like it brought our group together and made our bond stronger, she said during the unveiling. “By building this library we are hoping to inspire our amazing community and to start a chain reaction in the hopes that more Lil’ Free Libraries will be built in Yorkton, and other communities, continued Payton Corkum. The SAC built the small library box, located in the school parking lot along Gladstone Ave, with the help of teacher Andrew Pearce, explained Kira Ring of the SAC.
Jordan Stewart closes the Lil’ Free Library after helping to stock its shelves last week.
Co-op Challenge Cup new event for disc golf A major new disc golf event is launching in the parkland region this summer. The Yorkton Co-op Challenge Cup is being launched in conjunction with the Parkland Association of Disc Golf Tournament Series. The Co-op Challenge Cup (CCC) is an event where players will accumulate points for three specified events over the summer. The first event will be the Grain Millers Trilogy Challenge at Yorkton Sunday, Aug. 26, followed by the Yorkton Co-op Fling, Sunday Sept. 2 at Whitesand Regional Park, with the trilogy of events winding up with the be Sas-Kam Cup in Kamsack, Sunday, Sept. 16. “This is going to be a great new event for disc golfers in the PADG region and beyond, said Calvin Daniels PADG president. “This event is going to highlight three great courses, and create a lot of new interest in the sport. Daniels said it is great to see events at the Whitesand and Kamsack courses.
“It will be the inaugural tournaments at both courses, he said. “Whitesand is a long course, and great to play as it is laid out on the regional park’s sand greens ball golf course. It will really let big arms rip some drives, but watch out for the wind. “And Kamsack is so new the baskets just went in this month. They are Prodigy baskets, the first from the company in the PADG, and likely in Saskatchewan so that should entice a lot of players to take part. Jared Ruf, a Councillor with the Town of Kamsack said being part of the Co-op Challenge Cup is a great way to introduce the new course which was created in large part by the efforts of the recently created Kamsack Recreation Board. “We’re really excited about having the course in town, and thanks to the support of Sas-Kam Sports we were going to host a tournament, and having it part of this Challenge Cup just adds profile and hopefully brings out even more golfers, he said.
Don Thompson, chairman of Whitesand Regional Park Board was also excited by the new ‘mini tour. “This is a really exciting time for the Whitesand Disc Golf Course, he said. “It will be the first tournament held on our course and having the Co-op on board as a sponsor will assist us in promoting our course to disc golfers throughout the area. As for the Yorkton Co-op taking part, it was simply a good fit. “It’s obvious from the number of new courses in the region disc golf is growing, said Yorkton Co-op general manager Bruce Thurston. “We welcomed the
opportunity to support that growth, and when the Co-op Challenge Cup was suggested featuring courses in communities where we already have a presence, it was a natural. “We really hope the Cup will entice disc golfers to take in all three events to accumulate points and win some great prizes. The details of how the CCC will work in terms of accumulating points are still be worked out. “Basically players will accumulate points based on how they finish at the three events, said Trevor Lyons, tournament chair with the PADG. “The details of the point system are still being finalized, but the idea is, do well at

the three events and you should be in contention for CCC prizes. The CCC prizes will be handed out at the end of the third event in the series. Lyons said while accumulating points toward the CCC, players will also compete for prizes at the individual events, and top finishers will advance to our year end event. On the men’s side it

fish on Father’s Day!
One of my favorite types of fish to prepare for my husband is tilapia. Tilapia is available yearround and can be grilled, broiled, fried, baked or steamed in the microwave. It cooks in less than 10 minutes, which makes it a tasty choice for a Father’s Day dinner. Tilapia, or “St. Peter’s fish,” is a living relic. There have been references to and drawings of a tilapialike species dating to the time of the Egyptian pharaohs, and tilapia farming may predate the farming of any other fish species. Tilapia’s mild taste, adaptability and relatively low cost have led to its rapid ascension as one of the top 10 seafoods consumed in the U.S. by volume. The majority of tilapia farms are freshwater, although tilapia can survive in brackish water and even saltwater. According to the

Seafood Choices Alliance, the most commonly farmed tilapia species are Nile, Mozambique and blue. The skin color of the fish varies but is unrelated to flesh color or taste. Nile tilapia, known as nilotica or black tilapia, has dark skin. Mozambique tilapia, or red tilapia, has reddish skin. Tilapia, as a plant eater, grows quite well on a grainbased diet. The use of fishmeal or oil from wild fish is therefore not required, although some farmers do add a small amount of fishmeal to their feed. Tilapia is available in graded sizes of 3-5 ounces, 5-7 ounces (most common) and 7-9 ounces. It tastes like the water in which it’s raised, and the best quality tilapia has a very clean taste. You can find whole tilapia or tilapia fillets in the seafood section of most grocery stores. This recipe for Buttermilk Pecan Tilapia is the perfect way to showcase this delicious

BUTTERMILK PECAN TILAPIA •6 to 8 (6-ounce) tilapia fish filets •1 cup buttermilk •1 large egg, slightly beaten •1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, divided •1 teaspoon salt, divided •1 teaspoon ground black pepper, divided •1/2 tablespoon hot sauce •1-1/2 cups plain or whole-wheat Panko breadcrumbs or finely crushed cornflakes •1 cup ground pecans •1 tablespoon paprika •1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper •3 tablespoons vegetable oil
mixture, then into the seasoned crumb mixture. Place 2 tablespoons of oil in a large, non-stick pan and place over mediumhigh heat. Brown fillets in batches, 2 to 3 at a time -do not crowd the pan. Cook 3 minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Repeat with the remaining oil and fillets. Serve immediately. Serves 6 to 8. TIPS: Poultry season-
ing typically contains sage, thyme, marjoram and rosemary, all of which are delicious as a seasoning for fish. The buttermilk helps the coating to adhere to the fish. If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can make a substitute by combining 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with 1 cup of milk. Stir and set aside for 5 minutes before proceeding with the rest of the recipe. Cod or catfish fillets also work well in this recipe.

• Freeze juice boxes to use as ice packs in a lunch box or cooler. No mess, and it makes a lovely slushy treat on a hot day.
• In our beach bag, we include a change of loosefitting, comfy clothes for each kid. We package them in a gallon-size zipper-top bag, and when they change, the wet suit goes right in the plastic bag. It’s better than having a big soggy, sandy mess in our beach bag, which often includes a book or magazine. — F.C. in Texas
• “When you come home from the grocery store, stack the meats in your freezer according to expected use. For instance, if you are going to have pork chops on Monday and fish on Friday, you’d want to put the pork chops on top of the fish. This way, you need not dig around for what you need to defrost. And make sure
you wrap everything well.” — A.R. in Oregon • Is your tire slowly losing air? Sometimes it can be hard to tell where it’s coming from. Use this tire-shop trick to find a puncture fast: Fill the tire with air, then squirt soapy water over the whole tire. Then, just wait; the air coming out of the tire will be trapped and form a nice
little bubble! • Got a comfy pair of outdoor shoes for gardening, but they’re fabric? Never fear — you might be able to waterproof them. Rub canvas shoes with beeswax and wipe away any excess. Water should bead up instead of sinking in, so you can wear your comfy shoes to do your gardening tasks without get-

• It was the multitalented Brit G.K. Chesterton — he was a poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, lay theologian, biographer, and art critic — who made the following sage observation: “The men who really believe in themselves are all in lunatic asylums.” • Those who study such things say that the word “daisy” started out as “day’s eye” and was shortened over the years. Similarly, “God be with you” became “goodbye” and “whole be thou” became “hello.” • Becoming a sports star is the dream of many

young people, so you might think that someone who is signed to a professional baseball contract has it made. You’d be wrong, though: Only 1 out of every 10 athletes who sign such a contract ever becomes a major-league ballplayer. • The shortest song in the world is “You Suffer,” recorded in 1986 by the British band Napalm Death. It lasts precisely 1.316 seconds. • In France in the 1700s, capital punishment was not uncommon, and criminals thus condemned were decapitated by the country’s Chief Executioner. This
position was hereditary, which posed a problem when, in 1726, the holder of that title, Charles-JeanBaptiste Sanson, suffered an early death, leaving his 7-year-old son, Charles, to take up the grisly duties. It was obvious to all that a child could never wield the heavy ax required for the decapitations, so it was deemed acceptable for a helper to actually perform the executions. Only the official office-holder could put the official seal on the act, however, so the poor boy had to witness every one. It wasn’t until the ripe old age of 12 that he began to take over the full duties of the office. Thought for the Day: “It’s best to give while your hand is still warm.” — Philip Roth

Q: While I love all of these Marvel movies that are coming out, it got me to thinking about one of my favorite Robert Downey Jr. roles, which is Sherlock Holmes. Will he make another of those movies? — Bryan H., via email A: I have good news for you: Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes) and Jude Law (Dr. Watson) have signed on to co-star in a third installment of the “Sherlock Holmes” series. As of this writing, director Guy Ritchie is not yet
attached, but I’m hoping that status changes soon. His snappy and smart directing style really could be considered the third star of the previous two films. The story is being written by Chris Brancato (co-creator of “Narcos”) and is scheduled for a Christmas Day 2020
release. As more information becomes available — such as storylines and other co-stars — I’ll be sure to let everyone know. Q: Over Memorial Day weekend, I binge-watched “Everything Sucks!” on Netflix, and I am hooked. When will it be back for a new season? — Ryder W., via Facebook A: Tragically, Netflix opted not to renew the wonderfully nostalgic series that centered on a group of high school misfits and outcasts in the small town of Boring, Oregon. Aside from having a kick-ass soundtrack with all your ‘90s favorites — including artists such as Sebadoh, Ride, Spacehog and Tori Amos — it had a fun and relatable story of first
It’s that time of year when a flurry of invitations and announcements for events and celebrations arrive all at once — graduations, bridal showers, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and yes, Father’s Day on Sunday June 17! Make your gift-giving special with two of my favorite and easy DIY ideas that you and your kids can do together for gift wrap that show your special touch, creativity and pizzazz. USE FABRIC GIFTS AS THE WRAP Like a beach towel! If
there is a birthday in the house, or if your child is going off to summer camp, a colorful beach towel and items for “summer fun” are an ideal present. Instead of purchasing a gift bag, use the bright towel to wrap it all up. Fold the towel in half lengthwise. Make a triangular fold at the bottom and continue to make triangular folds until you reach the top — like folding a flag. If there is extra toweling at the top, fold it under. Pinch the two side end points and cinch them with ribbon or twine. Open the middle space to create a triangular pocket for tucking additional small gifts, such as flip flops, sunglasses, sunscreen and healthy snack bars. If there is space, roll up a fun magazine or comic book and a little bouquet
of flowers for that pizzazz factor. Or, are you giving ... A cookbook? Tie a colorful dishtowel folded in half crosswise around it, and tie in a knot with a set of measuring spoons. A baby gift? Roll it up in a light summer baby blanket with ribbons cinching the ends. Tie in a cute rattle. A picnic basket? Pick up a vintage 1950s tablecloth to wrap around the basket for an eye-catching retro look. A jewelry box? Wrap it in a fashion scarf twisted around and around and tie in a bow or loosely knot it and tuck inside the twists. LET NATURE WRAP IT UP Giving a bouquet of flowers? loves, first experiences and first triumphs. As with all cult favorites, there is a #SaveEverythingSucks campaign on all socialmedia platforms, so you can get involved and get your voice heard to try to revive it from the bowels of the one-season wonders. This is one of a few shows canceled this year that I wholeheartedly agree needs a second chance. Q: I need more “Poldark”! Can you give me any info about when or if it’ll be coming back? — Jennie T., Defiance, Ohio A: The Aidan Turnerstarring period drama, which finished airing its third season this past August, will be back for a fourth AND fifth season, according to PBS. The florist or market, trim the stems and arrange in a canning jar or large recycled, clean glass jar. Wrap a woodsy looking piece of birch bark (from fallen branches or your wood pile) around the container, and tie together tightly with twine to hold in place.
fourth season is set to debut this fall on Masterpiece on PBS, drawing on Winston Graham’s sixth and seventh “Poldark” series books: “The Four Swans” and “The Angry Tide.” For the fifth season, expect a jump of 10 years, with the action centering on the storyline of the eighth book, “The Stranger from the Sea.” The fifth season also is expected to be the final season. According to script writer Debbie Horsfield, season four is “very much Cornwall-based, but there are so many characters
and flavors, and one of those flavors is London. … There are whole sequences where we go to London, and that’s a really exciting new flavor to it. We will meet real characters, like (Prime Minister) William Pitt and (anti-slavery advocate) William Wilberforce. There are some wonderful, affirming storylines and some utterly tragic ones coming up.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

Madge Lake is a great year-round family destination. Ice fishing can be good, both on Madge Lake and on nearby Batka Lake.
Batka Lake is also popular for walleye, Madge Lake is quite shallow in most but more so for pike and perch. places, and is not known for its shore fishing opportunities. Billboards” Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell.
HOLLYWOOD — If “It” scared you good and you want more ... well, brace yourself, because the 2017 film, which grossed $700 million, will scare you again as “It: Chapter Two.” An all-star cast headed by Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader will portray the tormented kids as adults (with the original kids returning as well). Bill Skarsgard reprises his role as Pennywise. Chastain is currently filming “Woman Walks Ahead,” in which
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been vegan for 15 years. I avoid sugar, limit salt and have no caffeine. Recently, a pharmacist told me that I will not get proper protein unless I add fish to my diet. However, long ago, my doctor told me that my vegan diet was good and that I should take vitamin B-12 daily, which I have been doing. What are your thoughts on adding fish? — S.N. ANSWER: I agree with your doctor. A vegan diet can be very healthy, and avoiding sugar in particular helps assure that

Get ready for more gender switching. Last year producers recast “Ghostbusters” with an allfemale cast and grossed $229 million against a $144 million cost. Now the $70 million “Ocean’s 8” opens June 8 with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Helena Bonham Carter. Meanwhile, Oscar-winner Hathaway and Rebel Wilson are embodying Steve Martin and Michael Caine’s roles in “The Hustle,” a female reboot of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”
(1988). Now that “Black Panther” is out on DVD, it’s doubtful it will still be in theaters. “Panther” has settled into the No. 9 spot of the all-time top-grossing box-office films, passing “Frozen,” “The Last Jedi” and “Harry Potter & the Deadly Hallows: Part 2.” However, “Avengers: Infinity War” has sailed past them, as well as “Avengers: The Age of Ultron” (No. 8), “Furious 7” (No. 7), “Marvels: The Avengers” (No. 6) and “Jurassic World” (No. 5), and into the No. 4 berth, moving fast and threatening No. 3 “The Force Awakens” and the big
it is. The issue of adequate protein is brought up frequently, but most Americans consume more than twice the recommended daily allowance of protein. Plant foods have plenty of protein, and you certainly do not need to eat fish in order to get adequate protein. I think fish can be a healthy part of a diet, but it is not necessary. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital several months ago with poor heart function and only 10 percent kidney function. He has been on dialysis three times a week since then. We have been inquiring for several months about his current kidney function, and we cannot get an answer. We are just curious as to whether there has been any improvement. — S.K. ANSWER: Dialysis is a way of replacing kidney
function when the kidneys can no longer remove enough of the body’s waste materials. It sounds like your husband is on hemodialysis, where the blood is run through a machine that removes excess fluid and waste products, such as creatinine and potassium, which would otherwise increase in concentration in the blood. High potassium is life-threatening, and creatinine, though not dangerous, is the molecule we look at most commonly to estimate kidney function. Very rarely, kidney function can return even after a prolonged time on dialysis. I have never seen a case, but one study showed two cases per thousand where dialysis could be stopped. The clue that kidney function was returning was that urine output, which normally is scant while on hemodial-
ysis, had increased over time. Unfortunately, 99.8 percent of the time, the kidney failure is permanent. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old male, and I have been heavy for most of my life. Over the past 18 months, I have lost a great deal of weight and feel better than I have in years. My issue is where the excess has ended up: just below my belt-line. I know that so-called spot reducing doesn’t work, so I’m at a loss as to how to go about getting rid of this paunch. It’s not above my belt, and it is stubborn. Any ideas? — T.C. ANSWER: If you keep losing weight, odds are that stubborn fat will gradually go away. High-intensity aerobic exercise did seem to help in one study. I have had patients undergo liposuction, but that helps your appearance, not your
overall health. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.

We used to support films like “Gone With the Wind” (1939), “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) and “Casablanca” (1942), to name three of my favorites, but when you look over the above list, it’s all fantasy and superheroes. Her “Quiet Place” husband and costar, John Krasinski, also is red hot, landing the title role in the Amazon series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” with Oscar-winner Timothy Hutton and Peter Fonda. Its first eight episodes haven’t even begun airing (that happens Aug. 1), but the series already has been renewed for eight episodes of season 2. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A few months ago, I adopted a sweet little mixedbreed dog from the shelter. “Jasper” had been abandoned and was brought in after being hit by a car. He lost one of his hind legs. He’s a great little guy, but somewhat fearful of strangers, and I’m working with him on that. Here’s the problem: I’m getting back into the dating game a couple of
years after a really tough divorce. I’ve gotta admit, I’m somewhat fearful of strangers myself after that experience! But I’m less worried about me, and more about whether a new boyfriend would accept Jasper. I know you’re a pet advice columnist, not a relationship adviser, but how would you introduce Jasper to any dates I bring home? — John C. in Atlanta DEAR JOHN: You clearly love Jasper and are very proud of his progress. He’s a member of your family — even if the family unit is just the two of you right now. If you think highly enough of a date to bring
him home, then you should by all means introduce Jasper. From personal experience, I can tell you that how your date reacts to Jasper will tell you volumes about their personality and whether the two of you are going to be a great couple in the long term. But honestly, the relationship between you and Jasper is what’s important here. You’re just getting back into dating, so really, take your time, go out with a few different people, and don’t let your dating life dictate your relationship with a wonderful dog who is already making you part of his life. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Driving in sunny conditions Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well. Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset. A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Lifethreatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement. Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring
and summer, but sunblindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely. While there might be no way to prevent glare, drivers can take steps to make driving safer during times of day when glare is prevalent. • Make sure the windshield is clean. Water marks, dead insects, cracks, and road grime can make it even harder to see out of the windshield when the sun is blazing. Clean windshields regularly, and don’t wait until you’re head-on into the sun to engage the windshield washer spray. Doing so may only further compromise visibility. • Observe speed limits. When glare is present, slow down and keep more space between your vehi-
cle and the vehicle in front of you. If someone in front of you needs to brake suddenly, the greater distance between vehicles can give you more time to react and avoid accidents. • Change your route. Try changing your commute so you’re not driving head-on into eastern sun in the morning and western sun in the afternoon. • Invest in new sunglasses. Special lenses that mitigate glare, UV rays and blue light can make it easier for drivers to handle glare when behind the wheel. • Make sure the visor is functioning. Sun visors are there for a reason. Use it to the best of your ability, angling as needed. • Pull over. If the glare is especially bad, its a good idea to play it safe and pull over until the sun rises or sets. You also may want to change your driving time to avoid the glare. Motor vehicle accidents can happen on bright, sunny days. Glare can compromise drivers’ visibility, and drivers may need to take steps to protect their vision on sunny days.
