Increased clubroot surveillance in 2018 Cory Jacob, Crops Extension Specialist Watrous, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Clubroot is an important soil-borne disease of canola and other brassicas that can cause yield losses of 50 percent or greater under extreme conditions. Yield loss will be highest when pathogen levels are high, a susceptible crop is grown and when environmental conditions are favorable for disease development. Low pathogen levels will result in smaller galls, or swollen root tissue, which will have a reduced impact on yield compared to large galls which will occur when pathogen levels are high. In 2017, clubroot was confirmed in a limited number of canola fields in Saskatchewan crop districts 9A and 9B. Currently the distribution of clubroot
in Saskatchewan is limited, putting the province in a good position to get ahead of the disease and take precautions to minimize the spread and severity of clubroot. The first step towards this goal is to increase our understanding of the distribution of clubroot in Saskatchewan. To address this gap in knowledge, the Ministry will conduct an extensive survey in the highest risk regions of Saskatchewan (see shaded area in image) The survey area covers: 1. Regions where clubroot has been confirmed; 2. Areas in close proximity to clubroot infested areas along the AlbertaSaskatchewan and Saskatchewan-Manitoba borders; 3. High canola production areas; and 4. Regions with favorable environmental conditions.

This survey will start in mid-August. One field will be randomly surveyed in each township throughout the survey area. In each field, plants will be uprooted to examine for clubroot galls on the roots. Soil samples will also be collected at the field entrance for DNA testing to detect if the clubroot pathogen is present in the soil. When positive fields are found, the landowner and/or producer will be contacted and informed of a positive clubroot finding. Since clubroot is a regulated pest in Saskatchewan, the legal land location of all positive fields will be reported to the appropriate rural municipality (RM). Under The Pest Control Act, RMs have the authority to undertake prevention and enforcement measures related to the spread and control of clubroot.
The Ministry is encouraging that RMs regulate clubroot in a fair and
consistent manner that follows a farmer-driven approach. This approach

As for where you may have seen Eddie previously, he got his start in the mid-’90s playing Matt Clark on “The Young and the Restless,” and since then he’s starred in “Third Watch,” “Rosewood,” “CSI: Miami” and tons of other stuff. He’s also well-known for being Mr. LeAnn Rimes, whom he married in 2011. Before that, he was married to “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Brandi Glanville (whom he left for LeAnn), and together they have two sons.

enables landowners and producers to have a say in how clubroot will be managed on their farms. They will have the opportunity to work with a Professional Agrologist to develop a clubroot management plan for the clubroot infested fields. If the clubroot management plan meets a minimum set of science-based standards related to canola variety selection, crop rotation and sanitation practices, it will become the formal agreement between the landowner and/or producer and the Pest Control Officer. The general location of all clubroot infested fields will be shared publicly through a clubroot distribution map. This map will indicate the distribution and severity of clubroot within the surveyed area and will be used to raise awareness and encourage informed and proactive clubroot management. Totah, has been axed by the network after its first season. To me, that really is a shame because I found it to be a fun, feelgood and intelligent series unlike anything on television today. It’s still being shopped around to other networks, but as of this writing, there is no word on whether it’s been picked up. Maybe Hulu will sweep in and save it, like the streaming service did with the other brilliant Mindy Kaling series, “The Mindy Project.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

Individualized funding available for Autism Saskatchewan is fulfilling its commitment to provide individualized funding for children under the age of six who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The application form and eligible services list have been posted at www.saskatchewan.ca/autism. “Our government remains committed to improving services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their parents, caregivers and families,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “Individualized funding will provide more choice and flexibility for families, and improve access to supports.” In 2018-19, $2.8 million has been allocated to provide $4,000 per child with ASD under the age of six. The program will provide parents with funding for therapeutic interventions and family supports that best suit their child’s individual needs. It is estimated that approximately 700 children will be eligible
“Our government is working to make Saskatchewan a more inclusive province that is welcoming, responsive, innovative and accessible so people with disabilities can live the life of their choice,” Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said. “Individualized funding makes it easier for parents of young children with autism to have access to services that make the most sense for their needs.” ASD Individualized Funding is a joint Ministry of Health and Ministry of Social Services program. The Ministry of Social Services is administering the program, and is now accepting applications. Families who have applied and meet the program criteria will begin receiving funding in August 2018. ASD Individualized Funding is in addition to autism services that will continue to be provided in the public system. The Ministry of Health is building a registry of
autism service providers to assist parents in locating service providers. The registry will be posted on www.saskatchewan.ca/autism in August 2018, and will include: Behavioural consultants (who may provide applied behaviour analysis); Physical therapists; Occupational therapists; Psychologists; Social workers; Speech pathologists. Private service providers are encouraged to sign up for the registry, and can contact autismregistry@ health.gov.sk.ca for more information on how to do so. Funding can also be used for respite services, therapeutic equipment, training/coaching for parents/caregivers and more. For more information, consult the eligible services list available at www. saskatchewan.ca/autism. Development of the Autism Individualized Funding program has been informed by the
CN police urge safety around tracks By Sean Mott Staff Writer The CN police service is encouraging Saskatchewanians to exercise caution around train tracks. “I want the public to understand you never want to race a train to the crossing,” said Constable Hank Neumiller. “Even if it’s a tie, you still lose.” Neumiller, who’s served with the CN police service for years, pointed out how it takes trains a mile to fully stop. Even if train operators see something or someone on the tracks, they might not have enough to completely stop before they make contact. Since train tracks cross through the heart of Yorkton, Neumiller suggests cars in traffic stay 15 feet away from the tracks
during red lights or congestion. “If you can’t fit, don’t commit,” he said. If your car does break down on a track, Neumiller recommended finding a yellow sticker behind the crosswalk sign (which is shaped like an “X”). The sticker contains contact information for the railway owners along with the track’s location. “[The sticker’s] got the most important information you’ll ever need,” he said. “They can stop the trains in that area.” Neumiller told people to use their common sense around train tracks so everyone can make it home safe. “At the end of the day, we want everybody to be safe,” he said. “Look out for each other.” Further information on railway safety can be found at www.cn.ca/en/safety/cnpolice-service/.
Autism Stakeholder Working Group. The group included parents of children with ASD and individuals who provide services for families impacted by ASD. The Government of Saskatchewan would like to thank them for their work and dedication to the creation of this program. The Autism Individualized Funding program supports the
10-year Saskatchewan Disability Strategy and its vision of making Saskatchewan a more welcoming, inclusive, and accessible province for people who experience disabilities. The program also supports Saskatchewan’s Early Years Plan and its goal of finding better ways to support children experiencing disabilities. In addition to the $2.8
million allocated to ASD Individualized Funding in 2018-19, the Ministry of Health will continue to provide $8.55 million annually to support a continuum of autism services, including autism consultants, support workers and rehabilitation therapists. Additional information on the program can be found at www.saskatchewan.ca/autism.
Legion cairn finds new home By Sean Mott Staff Writer A Yorkton monument moved to a different home two weeks ago. It will receive a new plaque to commemorate the work of veterans in recent conflicts. The Yorkton Legion (Branch 77) moved out of its 380 Broadway Street West address in November 2016. They uprooted themselves into their new location on Riverview Road (after a nine-month stint on Fifth Avenue). The Legion took what they could with them during their move, but they had one massive object they couldn’t simply store in a supply closet: The rock cairn. The cairn (weighing over 3000 pounds and measuring a foot thick) was established as a monument in front of the Legion when it was built in 1961. It’s been a fixture in Yorkton for over 50 years. When the Legion ended its era on Broadway Street, it didn’t want to leave behind such a significant memento. “With the sale of the [Legion] building, it was decided that we wanted to keep that rock cairn,” said Ken Gordon, executive member with the Yorkton Legion. The Legion worked with the City of Yorkton to
A Royal Canadian Legion monument has a new home on Darlington Street. store the cairn in the town compound for over a year. After a discussion, the Legion and the City decided to plant the cairn on Darlington Street in front of the cenotaph. Construction workers moved the cairn to its new home in the early morning hours of July 13. While the cairn is in place, it’s not completely secure yet. “There’s more stonework to be done,” Gordon said. The Legion will be adding a granite plaque to the cairn. It will acknowledge soldiers who served in Afghanistan and other recent conflicts. “We’re recognizing all kinds of people that have been involved in service [who] haven’t been recog-
nized in the main cenotaph,” Gordon said. The cairn wasn’t the only Legion object that found a new home. A time capsule was planted beneath the cairn in 1986. It’s to be opened in 2026 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion. The Yorkton branch removed the capsule from its resting spot when they changed locations. It will be planted under the cairn again during a rededication ceremony in October of this year. It’s been a busy year for the Yorkton Legion. To celebrate their new home, they’ll be hosting an invitation-only official opening of their building on Riverview Road on Aug. 24.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A column in a popular consumer magazine states that taking a baby aspirin daily does more harm than good, and it should not be taken unless you have heart disease. I have been taking a baby aspirin daily for 10 years, and now I’m concerned. Your thoughts, please. — G.D. ANSWER: Experts disagree on the best advice.
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Emma demanded answers from Zoe and threatened to have her thrown in jail. Brooke tried to convince Liam that Hope was the wiser choice over Steffy. Xander told Zoe that they were not a couple and demanded that she go back to London immediately. Katie was shocked to hear the news of Hope’s pregnancy. Emma prepared for her big moment in the fashion show. Meanwhile, Zoe arrived in a disguise waiting for the perfect moment to outshine her rival. Justin was conflicted about Bill’s most recent request. Bill set Steffy up
Some points, however, are not controversial: Aspirin is beneficial for reducing future heart risks in people with established heart disease, but it increases the risk of bleeding events. Some of these are minor, but a few are potentially life-threatening. According to a recent review of published studies, in people at higherthan-average risk for heart disease, a daily aspirin reduces the risk of a nonfatal heart attack by about 20 percent, without significantly changing stroke risk or risk of dying from heart disease. Risk of bleeding is increased by 50 percent. Also, newer evidence suggests that aspirin may decrease the risk of some cancers, especially colon

cancer. Aspirin is more likely to have a net benefit in people with higher risk of heart disease, even if it isn’t diagnosed. The decision of taking aspirin should be made after a thorough review of all your individual risk factors, including heart disease risk and history of bleeding, and possibly colon cancer risk. When I discuss aspirin with patients, I very seldom recommend it to anyone with no known coronary disease who has had a significant side effect (such as bleeding) with aspirin in the past. As more studies are failing to show benefit, these recommendations may change. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in
pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? — V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to second-
hand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes. Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The booklet on COPD explains in detail both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD. Readers

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With new facts to work with, you should feel more confident in moving ahead. But continue to do so at an unhurried pace so you can spot details you might otherwise miss. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Taking on that new workplace project could be one of your smarter career moves. Expect a surprising show of support from someone who had always been a critic. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel you’re too busy to undertake a new responsibility. But check it out before making any decisions. What you learn could persuade you to change your mind. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You feel quite content enjoying all the comforts of home right now. But the urge to travel grows stronger, and by week’s end, you could begin packing your bags.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hectic period begins to ease up, but that doesn’t mean the Fine Feline can do much catnapping these days. You need to finish those old tasks and prepare for new ones. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expect to get some good news about your financial situation by week’s end. But it could still be too early to rush out with a long shopping list of things to buy. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your management skills make an impression on some workplace VIPs who might be looking for someone like you to take on an upcoming project. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Meeting a former adversary might be unsettling at first. But time has softened hard feelings, and you could be on the brink of starting a new relationship.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A troubling situation close to home might cause you to change your travel plans. But getting all the facts before you act might cause you to reconsider. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) You might be quite alone right now in deciding to support a major workplace shift. But others will join you as new information supports your bold move. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A former co-worker returns with news that could persuade you to reassess recently made plans. Be sure to consult with a trusted colleague before you act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your motives behind a recent decision could be called into question by a rival. But once you present the facts, all doubts will be resolved. Enjoy an arts-rich weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: While you love being the center of attention, your generous heart allows you to share the attention with others.
Did you know? According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses. Roughly 40 million adults or 18 percent of the country’s population, has an anxiety disorder. Developing from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain
chemistry, personality, and life events, anxiety disorders are highly treatable. Unfortunately, the ADAA notes that less than 40 percent of those suffering from anxiety disorders receive treatment. Treatment of anxiety disorders can be highly effective and can even help people deal with other disorders, as the ADAA says
nearly one-half of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. People living with anxiety disorders who seek treatment may find they also are suffering from depression, compelling them to receive treatment for that disorder as well and further improving their quality of life.

HOLLYWOOD — “Beautiful Mind” Oscarwinner Russell Crowe will play Roger Ailes, the late Fox TV executive who single-handedly inspired the “me too” movement with his sexual harassment of Fox TV employees, in a Showtime limited series. The script is based on the book “The Loudest Voice In the Room” and includes as least two U.S. presidents. Mark Wahlberg is one busy dude. In addition
to “Mile 22,” with John Malkovich and Ronda Rousey (opening Aug. 17), and “Instant Family,” with Rose Byrne and “The Help” Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer (awaiting a release date), he’s just committed to the Netflix film “Wonderland.” It’s the reboot of Robert Parker’s “Spencer,” which was a TV series with Robert Urich from 1985-1988 and the basis for most of Tom Selleck’s “Jessie Spencer” films. It will be Wahlberg’s fifth collaboration with director and former actor Peter Berg. Tiffany Haddish, whose work in “Girls Trip” (2017) led to the much-
“Rampage” (PG-13) — Down-to-earth primatologist Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) is a special-forces soldier who, in the course of his work with an antipoaching unit, discovers and befriends a silverback gorilla named George. Overhead in an orbiting space lab, a science experiment goes wrong, exploding the station and raining bits of geneticstwisted pathogens that cause three very scary animals to become impossibly large and aggressive: an alligator, a wolf and our dear, sign-language-communicating George. Davis
must team with a scientist (Naomie Harris) to subdue the animals and save the population from the animals’ rampaging. It’s loosely based on a video game, and the plot is a hot mess. But you get what’s advertised: The Rock and a big ol’ gorilla interacting with much physical mayhem. “I Feel Pretty” (PG13) — Amy Schumer stars as Renee Bennett, a lowlevel computer nerd who, like many, MANY women, feels the familiar lack of confidence of the overweight and under-prettied. It doesn’t help that she maintains the website of a beauty brand (read that: marketer of unattainable looks). She takes a cycling class, bumps her head and wakes up feeling like she’s a supermodel-level hottie, brimming with confidence and life changes. Schumer
Tiffany Haddish talked-about appearance on the Oscars when she presented with Maya Rudolph, is on fire, filmwise. She recently starred
Dwayne Johnson in “Rampage” may not be a supermodel, but she is not the poster child for the looks-disadvantaged. The message — love yourself; because no matter what you look like, if you act confidently, you can have it all! — gets stepped on as a result. “Isle of Dogs” (PG-13) — Wes Anderson’s stop-
Calming a colicky baby (NC) — All babies cry, but when it feels like your newborn is crying all the time and you’re not sure why, they may be suffering from colic. A colicky baby can be challenging for new parents to deal with — not only will you want to stop their crying, you’ll need find the source of their discomfort. Here are a few things you can try: 1. Get moving. Sometimes it’s as simple as a change of scenery, and taking them for a walk in the stroller or a ride around the block in the car might be all it takes to soothe them to sleep.
2. Warm water bottle. If cramping is what’s causing your baby’s discomfort, place a warm (not hot) water bottle on their tummy when you place them in their crib. The warmth will ease cramping and hopefully help them drift off to sleep. 3. An anti-colic bottle. Air ingested while feeding can lead to gas, cramping and ultimately colic. An anti-colic bottle with an air-free vent has a unique valve that vents air back into the bottle and not their tummy. 4. Hold baby upright. Holding your baby upright

It’s been a big year for the 38-year-old Haddish. The success of “Murder on the Orient Express” ($352 million gross) has prompted director Kenneth Branaugh to do a remake of “Death on the Nile,” which starred Oscarwinner Peter Ustinev as Hercule Poirot, as well as Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Angela Lansbury and

David Niven. But first we’ll see Disney’s “Artimus Fowl,” which he produced and directed with Dame Judi Dench and Josh Gad, due in August 2019. The Broadway smash hit “Wicked,” which opened in 2003 and has become the seventh longest-running Broadway musical, will finally reach movie screens in December 2019. The “Wizard of Oz” themed musical is about Glinda and The Wicked Witch of the West, and Dorothy passes through for just a few minutes. Tom Holland returns in “Spider Man: Far From Home,” with Jack all the dogs are being held. He is assisted in his search by a dog named Chief (Bryan Cranston), whose pack must reunite human and canine before the mayor’s goons exterminate the whole island. The list of contributors is deep indeed: Ed Norton, Scarlett Johannsson, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig and many more. “Super Troopers 2” (R) — The gang from Broken Lizard is back, after years of dragging their feet, with a sequel to the 2002 underground hit. This time, Mac, Thorny, Foster, Rabbit and Farva are called back into action to police a newly
discovered bit of America off Vermont that had inadvertently been living Canadian all this time. The usual antics ensue — and none of them are fit for description in this paper (if you saw the first one, you know what I mean, right meow). Although “ST2” is not as good as “ST1,” if you start drinking early, you may still enjoy the ride. your home cool. These easy recipes for Summertime Hawaiian Chicken and Slow-Cooked Lemon Curd Cake are the perfect way to avoid using your oven on a hot summer day. So slow down this summer, and enjoy a great meal. I love to cook, but when it’s 100 degrees outside my desire to turn on the stove melts away like an ice cube on a hot sidewalk. One good thing about summers in Texas, the heat seems to bring out my creativity! I’ve devised several ways to continue to enjoy my favorite meals and desserts without using my oven. My slow cooker is my “go-to” appliance in the wintertime for soups and savory dishes, but I’ve discovered that it’s perfect for the summer months as well. The slow cooker can be used, with a few adaptations, for many recipes that are traditionally prepared in the oven. Most slow cookers are sold with a recipe booklet. Expanding on the suggested slow cooker recipes to incorporate ones that usually require baking time in the oven is a great way to conserve energy and keep

Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 hours. After 2 hours, turn off the slow cooker. Leave cake in and covered for 15 minutes. Remove lid, and cool completely. The center of the cake will be soft. Carefully lift cake from slow cooker, using foil sides as handles. Dust cake with powdered sugar and decorate servings with toasted almonds and candied lemon slices, if desired. CANDIED LEMON SLICES Candied lemon slices are a beautiful garnish and make tasty snacks. They’re the perfect way to use lemons that have had the zest removed. •2 small lemons •1 cup sugar •2 tablespoons fresh
Cut lemons into 1/8-inch-thick rounds; discard seeds. Stir together sugar, lemon juice and water in a large skillet over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Add lemon slices, and simmer gently, keeping slices in a single layer and turning occasionally, 14-16 minutes or until slightly translucent and rinds are softened. Remove from heat. Using tongs, place slices in a single layer in a wax paper-lined jelly-roll pan. Cool completely (about 1 hour). Cover and chill 2 hours to 2 days. Reserve syrup for adding to ice tea, punch or making lemonade. Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. sure to leave a little space between pieces on the skewer so the food cooks evenly. If you like metal skewers, buy twisted or square ones, not round — the food will twirl on the skewers less and cook more evenly. If you’re using wooden or bamboo skewers, shape isn’t a factor. But soak them in water for at least 15 minutes before using so they don’t burn. Just pat dry before putting food on them. Understanding the condition of panic disorder Various disorders can disrupt daily life and compromise people’s productivity while adversely affecting their happiness. Panic disorder is one such condition and can be especially problematic because of the seeming spontaneity of panic attacks. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America notes that roughly 3 percent of Americans experience panic disorder, or PD, in a given year. While that might seem like a small percentage, it still translates to nearly 10 million people, many of whom may benefit from taking the time to understand PD. What is PD? The ADAA says panic disorder is diagnosed in people who experience
spontaneous panic attacks. These people are preoccupied with the fear of a recurring attack. What is a panic attack? A panic attack is the abrupt onset of intense fear or discomfort. Panic attacks peak within minutes and are characterized by a host of symptoms, not all of which must be present to qualify an incident as a panic attack. Attacks occur unexpectedly and may even cause sufferers to awake from sleep. Can anyone have PD? No one is immune to PD, though some people are more likely to experience PD than others. The ADAA notes that panic disorder is twice as common in women than in
men. While even children can have panic disorder and may experience panic-like symptoms, PD typically begins in adults age 20 or older. What are the symptoms of a panic attack? Various symptoms are associated with panic attacks. But the ADAA notes that not all symptoms linked to panic attacks must be present to confirm an attack. In fact, some people may experience limited-symptom panic attacks, which are similar to full-blown panic attacks but consist of fewer than four symptoms. Men and women should never selfdiagnose, and anyone who suspects he or she suffered a panic attack should consult a physician immedi-
ately. But if at least four of the following symptoms are present, a person may have suffered a full-blown panic attack. • Palpitations, pounding heart or accelerated heart rate • Sweating • Trembling or shaking • Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering • Feelings of choking • Chest pain or discomfort • Nausea or abdominal distress • Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint • Chills or heat sensa-
tions • Paresthesia (numbness or tingling sensations) • Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself) • Fear of losing control or “going crazy” • Fear of dying People who have experienced panic attacks and have not been diagnosed with PD may feel as though they are dealing with a life-threatening issue, as the intensity of attack symptoms can mimic those of conditions such as heart disease, thyroid problems and other issues. Individuals who think they
might have experienced a panic attack or those who suddenly exhibited any of the aforementioned symptoms are advised to exercise caution and report incidents to their physicians as soon as possible. Is PD treatable? The ADAA notes that PD is highly treatable and that people who suspect they have experienced panic attacks should not hesitate to report incidents to their physicians out of embarrassment or fear. More information about panic disorder is available at www.adaa.org.
Did you know? A study indicates that boys are experiencing the onset of puberty as soon as two years earlier than reported in previous research. The 2012 study from researchers at the American Academy of Pediatrics found that boys were entering puberty six to two months earlier than previous research suggested. While a trend toward earlier onset of puberty in girls has long been studied and accepted, the AAP study was the first to examine the onset of puberty in boys in contemporary times. The study found that African American boys were more likely to start
puberty early than white or Hispanic boys, with the earliest stage of puberty occurring in some non-Hispanic African American boys at age 9.14 years. The causes and public health implications associ-
ated with an earlier onset of puberty require further study, but parents of young boys can benefit from knowing that their sons might be entering puberty earlier than their parents might have expected.

Have you tried something new with your kids lately? There’s still time this summer to plan an activity or adventure. Karl Nelson, 40-yearold dad of two sons and executive of an educational nonprofit in Seattle, says introducing his boys to new experiences is vital for growth and learning about themselves and their world. He recently took his 5-year-old son, Oskar, who is always game

and perhaps a little out of the ordinary. Routines are important, but sometimes they become protective bubbles that need to be broken, or maybe just bent, for new perspective

Quality sleep for your child Adequate sleep is important for children’s health, states the American Academy of Pediatrics. Quality sleep is just as important as well visits and protective immunizations. Babies and young children may sleep between 10 and 18 hours per day, but by the time a child reaches school-age, he or she may be well-rested after getting between
9 and 11 hours. Sleep is vital for the body to recover and rebuild and for the brain to process new information. The Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital says that children who are not getting enough sleep may experience difficulty learning new tasks. Parents who want to foster good sleeping habits in their children can try the
following strategies. • Set a smart bedtime and nap schedule. • Do not allow the use of electronics approximately one hour prior to bedtime. • Create a regular bedtime routine that includes winding down and cues that rest is coming. • Stick to the same schedule every day of the
week — including weekends. • Make sure kids get daily exercise, which can make it easier for them to grow tired around bedtime. • Create a cool, comfortable and dark sleeping environment.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I deliver packages on a long route around town
every day. It seems that we’ve been inundated with warnings over the past few years about the dangers of leaving pets inside the car on a hot day while their owners go shopping or run errands. And yet, almost every day of the summer, I am calling emergency services or asking store managers to page customers
because I see pets panting behind rolled-up car windows. Please, please remind pet owners to leave their pets at home when they’re running errands! — Concerned Delivery Driver DEAR DRIVER: I absolutely agree, and I thank you for insisting on this
reminder! Even on a day that doesn’t seem too hot — say, 78 degrees F — the interior of a car can heat to well over 110 degrees within five minutes. Now that we’re in the hottest part of the year, that interior temperature climbs faster and higher and can reach 120 degrees easily. No pet can
withstand such suffocating heat for long. For short trips to the store or to run errands, leave your pet at home. If they must come with you (such as during long road trips), they should be left with an adult, and the air conditioning needs to be turned on. Of course, a planned
outing with your dog is a lot of fun just about any time. But always be mindful of the heat. Bring water for your dog to drink. Head home if your dog is panting heavily and not very active. And do not leave your pet in the car. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.
• “For gorgeous biscuits, add a bit of sugar to your biscuit mix. They
brown well and have lovely golden tops. To add depth to your sausage gravy, add a tablespoon of strong coffee just before serving. My granny did both of these, and her biscuits and gravy were famously good.” — J.R. in Alabama • “Tape pool noodles together to form a long line and secure across the
width of your backyard pool to partition off an area just for the little kids. It’s not about safety, since you should be watching your kids every minute. We do this so that the bigger kids — who like to splash and dive — don’t run into the littler ones who are just floating or practicing swimming.” — W.L. in
Florida • “When my children were little, they liked to do puzzles. We had quite a lot of them. So we wouldn’t get them mixed up, as soon as we opened the box, I would put a color on the back of all the pieces. Each puzzle had a different color, of course. It saved a of time and energy.” — P.H. in
Pennsylvania • “How to bring the squeak and shine to glassware: Put 1 tablespoon of white vinegar into the water and dish soap. Try it and you’ll see it works!” — T.G. in New York • Try a toilet brush from the dollar store to clean the gunk and dirt off your tires the next time
you wash the car. It has stiff bristles that go in all directions, and a handy holder, to boot! • Need to organize your ratchet wrenches? Use a tie rack or belt hanger and hang it off a nail on your shop wall. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
Does gluten-free benefit everyone? If the number of gluten-free products stocking store shelves and appearing on restaurant menus are any indication, then the general public has embraced gluten-free living. Many people eat gluten-free diets despite not having Celiac disease, which is a condition that requires people to avoid gluten. However, a voluntary gluten censorship may not be all that it’s cracked up to be. Less than 1 percent of Americans are glutenintolerant or afflicted with Celiac disease. Despite this, the popularity of gluten-free diets tripled between 2013 and 2014. Although people who are sensitive to gluten may feel better avoiding it, others will derive no significant benefit from gluten avoidance and will simply waste money buying the more expensive
gluten-free alternatives. People with perceived gluten sensitives may not have aversions to gluten at all. According to a study conducted in 2013, people with self-reported nonceliac gluten sensitivity, gluten only caused negative symptoms when subjects knew they were eating it. When they believe the food to be something else, participants experienced no symptoms. Other medical experts say that gluten may not be to blame for sensitivity, which may be a result of fermentable, poorly absorbed, shortchain carbohydrates (FODMAPs), like grains, beans, dairy, and some fruits. By removing the grain (gluten included), affected individuals feel better, thinking gluten is to blame. Those with no reason to avoid gluten could be put-
ting their health at risk by skipping wheat and other grains. A recent study from Harvard Medical School says those who avoid gluten may be harming their heart health. The study, which tracked the eating habits of 64,714 women and 45,303 men over a period of 26 years, found that long-term avoidance of gluten in adults sometimes caused the reduced consumption of hearthealthy whole grains that affect cardiovascular risk. Individuals who consumed the lowest levels of dietary gluten had a 15 per-

cent higher risk of heart disease. The study concluded that the promotion of gluten-free diets among people for whom it is deemed medically unnecessary to avoid gluten should not be encouraged. There may be other reasons to continue to eat gluten. A study published in The British Journal of Nutrition, titled, “Effects of a gluten-free diet on gut microbiota and immune

experienced increased natural killer cell activity, which could be helpful in improving the body’s ability to fight viral infections and cancer. A gluten-free diet isn’t necessarily a healthy one. While such a diet may be necessary for those with Celiac disease, unless a doctor has determined a person needs to avoid gluten, it is wise to include whole grains in a balanced diet.

This potentially puts people at risk for an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in their intestinal biome. Another study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry found that gluten may boost immune function. After roughly a week on added gluten protein, subjects
