DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had a hip replacement. I am 84, with hearing loss. My family says my hearing is worse after the operation. My daughter talked with several seniors who experienced the same thing. They think it has to do with the anesthesia.
“A Quiet Place” (PG-13) — John Krasinski directs and stars alongside reallife wife Emily Blunt in the exquisitely scary “A Quiet Place.” Set in nearfuture after a devastating invasion of aliens that hunt by sound alone, Lee and Evelyn Abbott live in a remote farmhouse with their children. They exist within a complicated and rigorous silence, and communicate with American Sign Language, as their daughter, Regan, is deaf. But into each carefully constructed life, some adversity must fall, and the family must outwit the forces that seek to destroy it. It’s smartly crafted, extraordinarily well-acted, with a fresh and inventive look at the survival horror genre. Yes, the monsters are real, but they are compounded by the anxiety of fear and perfectly tuned expectation. “Chappaquiddick” (PG13) — The inexhaustible source material that is the Kennedy family dynasty is again the subject of a film, this one centered on youngest son Ted and the infamous incident involving a car, a bridge and the tragic death of a young campaign worker named Mary Jo Kopechne, played by Kate Mara. Actor Jason Clarke does a wonderful job of tackling the persona of Ted Kennedy, exposing vulnerability and weakness as well as giving us flashes of his derailed ambition. Bruce Dern plays a wizened Joseph Kennedy, while Ed Helms takes on the role of fixerin-chief Joe Gargan. This film isn’t making any revelations, but Clarke’s performance is especially stand-out, making the emo-
Fact or fiction? — D.W. ANSWER: Possibly fact. Hearing loss is a known and rare occurrence after surgery, and there are several ways in which it can happen. You mentioned anesthesia: Several anesthetic agents, especially nitrous oxide, can cause temporary hearing loss, but nitrous oxide is not used as often during surgery as it once was. Changes in the fluid pressure in the ear also can cause both temporary and permanent hearing loss. Finally, antibiotics given around the time of an operation can cause hearing loss.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently attended a free introductory visit at my local health spa. It’s an interesting process. There is a circuit with 12 machines and 12 mats for doing cardio. Each exercise is done for 30 seconds, then you move to the next station. The circuit is supposed to be done twice at each session, three times per week. Can this really work to help you lose weight and get fit? Need I say again, 30 seconds ... really? Your opinion please. — E.Y.M. ANSWER: There are two questions, and the first is on fitness. There,
the answer is a resounding yes. High-intensity interval training has been clearly proven to improve muscle and cardiovascular fitness. If you were to follow the program at the gym, working hard but not overdoing it, you certainly would find that your ability to do the exercises would improve, your stamina would increase, and you’d likely feel better and have more energy. A 24-minute workout (24 stations of 30 seconds each, done twice) is enough (and a LOT better than no workout at all). Unfortunately, just doing the exercise will not make you lose much in need of a soul, and a collection of druglords, warlords, quirky personalities and Very Bad Guys — hey, there are parts for everyone! Heading up the cast of bad guys are James Franco and Milla Jovovich, two actors known for giving understated, nuanced performances (sarcasm, folks). The plot is riddled with unnecessary turns, but at least it includes roles for Snoop Dogg and Method Man.
Charlie Plummer in “Lean on Pete” tional revisiting of history palatable. “Lean on Pete” (R) — Charlie Plummer stars as Charley, a 15-year-old boy with a rough life who finds his heart in an almost worn out quarter horse named Lean on Pete. When his single dad relocates the pair to Oregon, Charley picks up a job working with the handler (Steve Buscemi) and jockey (Chloe Sevigny) who race Pete. But when the horse starts to lose and is scheduled for sale/slaughter, Charley sets off on an adventure across the west in search of a better life for himself and the horse. Is it enough to love a thing, and to make that love your mission? This bittersweet and heart-touching gem based on the novel by Willy Vlautin is worth the watch. “Future World” (R) — Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A bunch of celebrities sit around at a party and decide that they should make a post-apocalyptic action/ sci-fi movie about a Queen (Lucy Liu) who is dying, a Prince (Jeffrey
Wahlberg) who must save her, a sexy robot assassin (Suki Waterhouse) who is

weight. Losing weight comes from better dietary habits, which can help you eat less food and still feel satisfied. The combination of increased exercise and a little less food, especially less low-quality (“junk”) food, may help you lose a few pounds. Losing weight shouldn’t be the goal, in my opinion. Losing weight and keeping it off is tough to do, but by exercising regularly and eating well, you can dramatically improve overall health and well-being even without weight loss. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an itchy-ear problem. It even wakes me up at night. I’ve tried Cortizone-10, hydrogen peroxide solution, ear baths and cotton swabs. Nothing seems to work for long. Can you help me? — G.P.
ANSWER: Stop the hydrogen peroxide — it is very drying and can damage the sensitive skin in the ear. The hydrocortisone should work for many common conditions, but if it hasn’t, then your regular doctor, a dermatologist or ENT doctor should take a look in your ear and see what is going on. Seborrheic dermatitis and eczema are common conditions that can affect the skin in the ear. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Farmers take annual field trip at research farm By Sean Mott Staff Writer Dozens of farmers and agricultural experts loaded onto bleachers at the the Yorkton Research farm on Thursday. They got comfortable in their seats as tractors and trucks began to pull away, dragging the bleachers with them. Three sets of traveling risers rolled across the fields south of of Yorkton. It was an image worthy of a Mad Max movie. The mobile bleachers stopped at certain sections of the research farm. Mike Hall, Research Manager with the East Central Research Foundation (ECRF), and other specialists hopped out of the stands to explain unique crops and growing techniques. They fielded questions from visitors before climbing back onto their improvised traveling caravan and moving on to the
next section. This guided tour through agricultural ingenuity was the sixth annual research farm field day. The event, organized through a partnership with ECRF and Parkland College, invited horticulture enthusiasts to see, feel, and smell the developments at Yorkton’s research farm on Jul. 12. “People today saw a number of experiments in cereal,” Hall said. “We had some specialty crops as well, including forage corn and flax and quinoa.” Hall was excited to share the research farm’s experiments with protein in wheat. He said that last year, due to low rainfall and dry air conditions, people saw low protein wheat numbers. The research farm focuses on addressing that problem. “Producers are interested in ways to...increase
Visitors sat in their mobile bleachers as they learned about the research farm’s developments. protein in our wheat,” he said. “We showed some strategies today and weighed the pluses and minuses.” The research farm is a joint effort from ECRF and Parkland College. They
So much to do in Saskatchewan’s Parks Saskatchewan Parks Week is July 15-21, 2018 and Sask Parks is presenting a wide range of activities and events to celebrate all week long. “Starting with a Learn to Fish weekend, a weeklong BioBlitz, shows from SaskExpress and wrapping up with Canada’s Parks Day on July 21, we want as many people as possible to experience our magnificent provincial park system,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “Whether you are an experienced camper or a novice wanting to camp for the first time, Parks Week will have something for you.” Saskatchewan Parks Week has been celebrated in the province for more than 35 years. The designation of Parks Week aims to promote the benefits of park programs and facilities, as well as Saskatchewan’s natural, cultural and historic resources.
A provincial favourite, SaskExpress will once again be bringing energy and showcasing great young talent at Sask Parks this summer. Touring with their new Circus of Life show, these gifted performers will liven spirits on summer nights. What’s more, to engage hearts and minds in nature and outdoor recreation, Sask Parks has organized a provincewide virtual BioBlitz and other great Parks Week activities available in 15 parks around the province. Fun for the whole family, the BioBlitz is a unique opportunity to engage with nature while using modern technology. After downloading the free iNaturalist app, park guests can upload their photos to the “Saskatchewan Parks” project with the goal to discover and record as many species of plants, wildlife and bugs as possible in each provincial
park. Through the app, an online community will try to determine the name of the species and whether it is native to Saskatchewan or one that has never been recorded before in the province. Everyone can watch the species list grow and anyone who makes an observation and posts it will have a chance to win an annual parks pass and two nights of free camping. Activities and events offered at various provincial parks throughout the week also include artistic performances, films, and sports such as beach volleyball, pickleball and yoga. Exploration and discovery activities are planned too, like the “5 Senses Hike” at Greenwater Lake or “Nature Detectives” at Good Spirit Lake. Saskatchewan residents and tourists can find out what’s happening at their favourite park by visiting www.tourismsaskatchewan.com/places-to-go/ provincial-parks/activities.

The organization helps protect and promote the best interests of immigrant children in the United States who’ve been separated from their families. Meanwhile, Fox series star and creator of “The Orville,” Seth McFarland, has donated $2.5 million to National Public Radio and its Los Angeles station, KPCC, after Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s suggestion that viewers not watch any media besides Fox News. McFarland said it’s like they’re saying, “Don’t think critically, don’t consult multiple news sources and in general don’t use your brain!” Fox TV isn’t thrilled with his opinion or generosity. “Saturday Night Live” alum Kristen Wiig had to bow out of the proposed

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Ciara was questioned by Hope about her ordeal with Ben. Theresa felt guilty for sandbagging Brady, and JJ suggested she find some common ground with him. Eve encouraged Brady to throw Nicole under the bus to clear his name. Ciara confronted Ben about the fire at the cabin. Sonny and Will were desperate to figure out what happened to Jennifer Aniston. Paramount Pictures is preparing a biography film about Sammy Davis, Jr. based on his 1965 memoir, “Yes, I Can.” Davis was a member of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack along with Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, who all starred in the original “Ocean’s 11” and several other films. It’s a good thing Jennifer Lopez has her hit Las Vegas show and the successful NBC show “World of Dance” to fall back on, given that the second season of her series “Shades of Blue” is being killed in the ratings by ABC’s game shows. If ratings don’t improve it will be headed for the chopping block. Because of the initial success of “Roseanne” (before Roseanne screwed it up), Fran Dresher is planning a reboot of “The Nanny” (1993-1999). The show has proven to be pure gold in syndication with a loyal following. Chris Hardwick, host of NBC’s high-rated game show “The Wall,” is the latest male celebrity caught in the “Me Too” web. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your zeal for challenges usually works well for you. But this week it’s best to avoid jumping into new situations without more information. Vital news emerges by the weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s patience pays off as that pesky problem works itself out without taking too much of your valuable time. A new task opens interesting possibilities. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those suggestions you want to share need to be set aside for a while so you can focus on the job at hand. There’ll be time
later to put your ideas into a workable format. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be sure about your sources before you use the information in any decision you reach about your new project. Some of the data might be out of date or misinterpreted. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A sudden challenge might rattle you at first. But pump up that strong Lion’s heart with a full measure of courage, and face it with the continuing support of family and friends. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) A step-by-step progression is the better way to move ahead. Taking shortcuts could be risky at this time. Important news arrives on the 1st. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Avoid getting drawn into workplace disputes that should be handled by those directly involved. Instead, spend your energy developing those new ideas. things tighten up later this month. Money matters ease by the 1st. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Uncertainty over workplace policy creates anxiety and confusion among your colleagues. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked, once again, to help work things out. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The workweek keeps you busy tying up loose ends and checking data that needs to be verified. The weekend offers a chance to relax and restore your spent energies. When I think of summer recipes, I seldom think of soup. However, a well-balanced soup is the perfect way to highlight all the sweet, crisp flavors of freshly picked summer corn. Soups are a perfect dish in the winter, but they’re easily a seasonal recipe with the right ingredients. Using both the corn kernels and the corn cob in a soup is a great way to quickly and deeply infuse the broth with flavor, creating a spoonful of summer with each bite. Corn on the cob is an essential part of a summer meal and provides many health benefits yeararound. The average serving of corn on the cob has about a quarter of your daily requirement for thi-
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, my hometown of Houston was struck by unprecedented flooding when Hurricane Harvey, a powerful Category 4 storm, made landfall. Many of my neighbors lost almost everything. One of the great things that happened in the storm’s aftermath was a coordinated effort to rescue thousands of pets that were abandoned or escaped during the deluge. Many were reunited with their owners a few weeks later thanks to having upto-date ID, license tags and microchips. Please urge everyone in coastal areas to make sure they AND their pets are prepared in case of a storm. It can make a huge difference in keeping your pets safe and helping an entire area recover more quickly from a disaster. — Ted G., via email DEAR TED: You told them, and I thank you. Being prepared to evacuate quickly in the event of a natural disaster is important, and it’s critically important to include your pets in the planning. Have an evacuation kit that includes medication, copies of tough-to-replace paperwork, water and food — enough for each family member, and each pet. Include a sturdy leash for each pet. in 2-3 hours. The sugar in corn is quickly lost, so for optimum quality process it as soon after picking as possible. If you can’t cook fresh corn immediately, store it in the refrigerator. This recipe for Sweet Corn Soup with Spicy Guacamole is the perfect showcase for fresh corn and summer vegetables. Soup in the summertime? Yes, please! amin, which helps maintain memory, as well as beta-cryptoxanthin, which aids in lung health. Corn is high in folic acid, which is needed by women who are taking oral contraceptives. It also is a good source of fiber and thiamine, and contains fair amounts of vitamin C, magnesium, niacin and potassium. One serving or one ear of corn has about 83 calories. Here are some tips from the Utah State Extension Service for selecting and storing fresh corn: • Look for corn with good green husk color, silk ends that are free from
decay or worm injury, and stem ends that are not too discolored or dried. Select ears that are well-covered with plump, not too mature kernels. Avoid ears with undeveloped kernels, ears with very large kernels and dark yellow kernels because they can be tough and not very sweet. • Husk one side of the corn. Press a fingernail into one of the kernels to test the liquid. Ripe corn should have a milky-looking liquid; overripe corn will have either a clear liquid or none at all. • It is important to pick corn and process it with-

you are unable to evacuate in time or are advised to stay put. Also have a plan for the aftermath, including places to stay long-term, like a pet-friendly hotel, and where to get medical help for family or pets. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Is “The Orville” ever going to come back? Recently there was a repeat episode, then nothing. I really liked that show. — Richard W., Batesville, Indiana A: The science-fiction comedy — which stars and was created by Seth MacFarlane of “Family Guy” fame — will be back for a second season on Fox. Look for its two-hour season premiere on Dec. 30. “The Orville” is a liveaction, one-hour space-
Heading for the beach by the sea or a lake? Along with towels, sunscreen and flip-flops, bring along a carton of plaster of Paris, a paper cup and an empty quart-size can or plastic recycled food container to make a unique piece of natural art that will last — and decorate your yard or deck when you get back home. You can even make a terrific creation in your own backyard sandbox if you don’t live near the water. If your kids have made plaster handprints in school, they’ll be familiar with the following and easy how-tos. To make a mold in damp sand: Use your hands to scoop out a free-form design at least 2 inches deep. If you are at an ocean beach, just be sure the tide won’t be coming in for at least a couple of hours. You also can make a mold using toys such as a plastic fish or crab. Press the toy into the sand to make the shape, and then remove the toy. Any connecting areas in your design should be at least 2 inches wide to keep the final plaster project from breaking. To add interest, press some natural objects you collect on the beach into the base of the sand mold, such as shells, rocks, twigs and bark or driftwood. Pour a cup or two of fresh or seawater into the disposable container. Add the powdered plaster according to directions on the box and stir with a stick. The mixture should be smooth and thick like a milkshake. Don’t overstir, however, as this causes the mixture to set up too quickly and weakens the final product. Immediately pour the mixture into your sand mold, spreading it evenly to all areas with a stick, if necessary.

Tracy Morgan adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows the USS Orville, a midlevel exploratory spaceship. Seth stars as Commanding Officer Ed Mercer. His ex-wife, Kelly Grayson (played by Adrianne Palicki), is his To make a hanger for your art: Poke a paper clip halfway into the plaster at the center top as the plaster thickens. If the project is large, you may wish to position two paper clips evenly spaced from each side. Allow the plaster to harden for about an hour and a half, depending on the size of the mold, and then carefully remove the plaster souvenir from the sand. Dispose of leftover hard plaster in a trash can. Take a picture of your pleased kids holding their creations before you head home. Wrap your art loosely with newspaper, and let it dry and harden completely. Glue on additional decorations, if you wish. NOTE: Never pour liquid plaster down a drain. first officer. The series also stars Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J. Lee, Mark Jackson and Chad L. Coleman. Q: I love Tracy Morgan’s new show “The Last O.G.” Will it be back for another season? Please say yes! — Hal T., via email A: Yes! “The Last O.G.” has been renewed by TBS for its sophomore season. The series centers on Tray (played by Tracy Morgan), who is released from a 15-year prison stint to a changed and unfamiliar world. Returning to his newly gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood, Tray discovers that his former girlfriend Shay (Tiffany Haddish) is married to
another man and has been raising Tray’s twins, who he never knew existed. “The Last O.G.” was rated 2018’s No. 1 cable comedy series. Not only that, it also set the record as TBS’s biggest pro-social marketing campaign for a scripted series. TBS collaborated with several greater New York City area organizations, including the Fortune Society, Greyston Bakery, STATE, NYC Parks and Rec, and the New York Housing Authority to directly connect with the communities they serve, while raising awareness and highlighting the timely, culturally and socially relevant themes surfaced by the show. The program staged
benefits, and refurbished playgrounds and basketball courts, among other charitable offerings. Q: We saw Harry Connick Jr. in Fort Myers, Florida, this month. He was wonderful and we were looking forward to seeing his television show. I contacted someone from CBS and was told he will not return in the fall. I hope we can save his show. — Penny O., via email A: Unfortunately, this one looks like a done deal. The announcement was made back in February, with the final original show airing Sept. 14. Harry Connick Jr. released this statement: “I have truly loved doing this show and
appreciate your welcoming me into your homes every single day. I’m incredibly proud of the show we produced over the past two seasons. We tried to create a safe place where families could gather to be entertained, uplifted and inspired, and where we could celebrate everyday women who work hard to make our world a better place. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and will continue to find avenues to uplift our country.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

The effects of alcohol on the body According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 56 percent of adults age 18 and over reported drinking alcohol in the past month. The prevalence of alcohol is undeniable, and many drinkers seem unfazed by the short- and long-term effects of alcohol consumption. While drinking in moderation may not necessarily prove harmful, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that excessive alcohol consumption, whether it’s on a single occasion or over time, can take a serious toll on various areas of the
body. • Brain: Alcohol can affect how the brain looks and works, interfering with its communication pathways and potentially disrupting one’s mood and behavior. In addition, alcohol can affect a person’s ability to think clearly and adversely affect coordination. • Heart: Heart problems associated with longtime excessive alcohol consumption or even too much alcohol on a single occasion include cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that compromises its ability to pump
blood to the rest of the body. Irregular heart beat, stroke and high blood pressure are some additional heart conditions that can result from excessive alcohol consumption. • Pancreas: The pancreas is a gland located in the abdomen that, among other things, aids in the digestive process. The NIAAA notes that alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can lead to pancreatitis. An inflammation and swelling of blood vessels in the pancreas, pancreatitis can prevent proper digestion and produce pain in the upper abdo-
men that can spread to the back as well. • Liver: Cirrhosis, a chronic disease of the liver that’s often linked to alcoholism, may be the most widely known liver disease associated with alcohol. However, additional diseases, including alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis and steatosis also may result from heavy drinking. Roughly 35 percent of long-term drinkers develop alcoholic hepatitis, the presence of which may require liver transplants if other courses of treatment,
such as dietary changes and quitting alcohol, are ineffective. Fibrosis refers to scar tissue in the liver, while the Cleveland Clinic notes that steatosis, or fatty liver, that occurs after acute alcohol ingestion is generally reversible with abstinence. • Immune system: Excessive alcohol consumption weakens the immune system, leaving acute and chronic heavy drinkers vulnerable to disease. Single occasion heavy drinkers may find their ability to defend
themselves against infection is weakened for up to 24 hours after getting drunk. Chronic heavy drinkers are more susceptible to diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis than people who drink in moderation or not at all. • Cancer: Excessive alcohol consumption also has been linked to a host of cancers, including cancers of the mouth, esophagus, throat, liver, and breast. • Summer kids tip: Create an “I’m Bored” jar with ideas about things to do. Now when that phrase inevitably comes up, you’ll be ready with a quick solution. • This tip takes the pain out of a task nobody likes: dusting the blinds! Use a set of salad tongs for a blinds duster; just wrap a microfiber cloth around each of the tongs
and secure it with a rubber band or two. Then use the tongs to grab and glide along each blind. Even kids can get behind this dusting job. • “Tacos are a favorite meal in our house, but very messy — until we discovered a great use for coffee filters. We use a filter to hold the taco and peel back the paper as we eat. Now nothing drips out or falls out, even if the shell cracks!” — E.B. in Oregon • “We like juice at home, and the kind we like has a large mouth on the bottle. After eight hours of furious fighting, a change in wind direction prompted the Spanish to retreat toward the North Sea. • On July 27, 1921, at the University of Toronto, Canadian scientists successfully isolate insulin — a hormone they believe could prevent diabetes — for the first time. The first test subject, a teenager, was treated with insulin injections and improved dramatically. • On July 28, 1932, President Herbert Hoover orders the U.S. Army under Gen. Douglas MacArthur to evict by force 20,000 Bonus Marchers from the nation’s capital. The World War I veterans were seeking early payment of money they were owed. When 2,000 refused to
leave, MacArthur set their camps on fire. • On July 26, 1956, the Suez Crisis begins when Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalizes the British and Frenchowned Suez Canal, hoping to charge tolls. The Suez Canal was completed by French engineers in 1869. • On July 25, 1978, Louise Joy Brown, the world’s first baby to be conceived via in vitro fertilization, is born in England to parents Lesley and Peter Brown. The Browns later had a second daughter, Natalie, also through IVF. • On July 23, 1982, Vic Morrow and two child actors are killed in a crash involving a helicopter during filming on the California set of “Twilight Zone: The Movie.” The actor and children were shooting a Vietnam War battle scene. • On July 24, 1998, Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic, “Saving Private Ryan,” is released in theaters. The film was praised for its authentic portrayal of war and won five Oscars, including Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Did you know? Certain types of dairy can have a positive effect on blood pressure. According to the Cleveland Clinic, people with high blood pressure, which occurs when the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls is above normal range, can look to diet to help lower their blood pressure. Among the foods that can benefit people with high blood pressure is low-fat dairy. Calcium rich foods, such as low-fat dairy products like skim milk, 1 percent milk and Greek yogurt, can help lower blood pressure. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic notes that low-fat and lowsalt cheese also can help people achieve healthier blood pressure levels. People with healthy blood pressure can switch to low-fat dairy to avoid high blood pressure, which is often referred to as hypertension. In a study of more than 5,000 adults,

Five reasons to try apple cider vinegar Vinegar is a fermented liquid made from a wide array of ingredients that is used primarily to preserve and flavor food. But the uses for vinegar are almost as extensive as the variety of flavors it’s available in. The word “vinegar” comes from the French “vin aigre,” or “sour wine.” Vinegar is a diluted solution of acetic acid that forms with the fermentation of grapes, apples, rice, corn, and many other ingredients. Apple cider vinegar, or ACV, is a type of vinegar that has recently skyrocketed in popularity due to its purported health benefits. ACV is formed from cider or apple must and has a long history as a home remedy, making it the most popular type of vinegar in the natural health community. The following are just a handful of the purported benefits credited to ACV. 1. ACV improves healthy gut flora. Like other fermented foods and bev-
erages (think yogurt and kombucha), ACV is rich in enzymes and probiotics. Probiotics can aid in digestion and make sure that the digestive system is working efficiently. According to the health and wellness team at MyFitnessPal, unpasteurized ACV can deliver probiotics and energize digestion. Others say that ACV can assist with easing an upset stomach by addressing unhealthy bacteria. Some remedies suggest that the pectin in ACV can help soothe intestinal spasms as well. 2. ACV can be used as a disinfectant. ACV and other vinegars can kill harmful bacteria or prevent them from multiplying, according to Healthline. ACV has historically been used as a disinfectant and natural preservative and may help reduce instances of E. coli. Those same antibacterial properties also may help head off infections of the throat. Reader’s Digest
Summer heat facts For many people, summertime is synonymous with trips to the beach, water sports and recreation. Even though summer warmth is a welcome break from winter weather for many people, heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities, resulting in hundreds of deaths each year. Ensuring summer recreation plans remain enjoyable means keeping an eye out for heat-related illnesses and other dangers. • Hot cars can be traps. It is never safe to leave a pet, child, elderly person, or disabled individual locked in a car. Temperatures can climb rapidly inside of a sealed vehicle, even if the windows are cracked. • Pay attention. Listen to or read weather forecasts to stay abreast of potential temperature changes as well as the heat index. Discuss safety precautions with members of the family and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency. • Stock up on fluids. The Red Cross says to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you are not thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine. Make sure the elderly also get plenty of water, as they often do not recognize dehydration as readily as others. • Limit strenuous activities. Reschedule outdoor activities if there is a heat wave, or move them to cooler times of the day. Spend the hottest portion of the day, usually between noon and 3 p.m., in the shade or inside in the air conditioning. People on job sites should take more frequent breaks and find shade whenever possible during these hours. • Change your clothes. Loose-fitting, lightweight, lightcolored clothing will help keep you cool. Avoid dark colors when spending time in the sun. • Recognize distress signals. Heat stress, exhaustion and heat stroke progress as symptoms worsen. Nausea, weakness, elevated body temperature, clammy skin, confusion, and delirium are some of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. • Find ways to stay cool. Not everyone has air conditioning. On especially warm days, going to public places with air conditioning, such as libraries, can help. Be sure to check on the elderly or others who may have difficulty finding cool places to spend their day. Days in the sun are meant to be fun, but hot days also require extreme caution.

indicates that gargling with ACV can soothe a sore throat and create an acidic environment in the esophagus that most germs can’t survive. 3. ACV contributes to feelings of fullness. Many people insist that ACV helps with weight loss. According to dietician and certified diabetes instructor Katie Rankell at UC Irvine Medical Center, ACV has been shown to lower blood sugar by reducing the absorption of carbohydrates, while also contributing to feelings of fullness that can help people avoid overeating. 4. ACV naturally lowers cholesterol. A 2016 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found consumption of the acetic acid found in ACV reduced serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in rats. More research is needed to determine if humans can reap similar rewards. 5. ACV can treat dandruff and other skin ailments. The acidity of ACV changes the pH of the skin and scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. Applying ACV to the scalp can inhibit dandruff. It also can be used as a toner that exfoliates the skin and makes it less oily.

Improve GERD symptoms with natural remedies Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a painful condition in which stomach acid flows up the esophagus and into the mouth. Sometimes called dyspepsia, acid reflux or heartburn, GERD can generate a fiery sensation in the chest and throat that can range from mild to severe. What is GERD? GERD can affect anyone regardless of their age, gender or ethnicity. Approximately 20 percent of the population has GERD. Five million Canadians experience heartburn and/or acid regurgitation at least once each week, states the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation. GERD can cause difficulty
swallowing, regurgitation of food or sour liquid, a sensation of a lump in the throat, or chest pain, advises the Mayo Clinic. Some people experience intermittent symptoms of GERD, while others experience symptoms with every meal or in between meals. People who have chronic reflux might also suffer from nighttime symptoms, such as disrupted sleep or chronic cough. GERD also may cause Barrett’s esophagus, a condition in which tissue that is similar to the intestine replaces the tissue lining the esophagus. Treating symptoms In many mild to moderate cases of reflux, individuals can rely on lifestyle changes and nat-
ural remedies to prevent symptoms. • Avoid food triggers. Certain foods and beverages, such as greasy or spicy recipes and alcoholic beverages, can make GERD symptoms strike. Acidic foods, chocolate, onions, carbonated beverages, and caffeinated beverages also may trigger GERD. • Fasting before bedtime. Avoid eating food and consuming beverages two to three hours before bedtime. • Lose weight. According to the Center for Esophageal Motility Disorders at Vanderbilt University, obesity is the leading cause of GERD. Extra stomach fat puts pressure on the abdomen, pushing gastric acids into the esophagus. Losing weight
can reduce this pressure. • Eat small meals. Rather than eating a few big meals, eat small meals throughout the day. • Try natural herbs. WebMD says that some natural GERD remedies contain German chamomile, lemon balm, licorice, milk thistle, and angelica. Also, melatonin, a supplement used as a sleep aide, has been suggested to help relieve heartburn. But the research is conflicting as to whether melatonin is effective. Always discuss supplement use with a doctor prior to starting a regimen. • Drink low-fat milk. Milk may temporarily buffer stomach acid, but high-fat milk may stimulate the stomach to produce more acid.
• Chew gum. Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which can be an acid buffer, offers WebMD. Chewing gum also results in more swallowing, which can force acids out of the esophagus. • Quit smoking. Some studies indicate nicotine relaxes the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter, the flap that blocks stomach acid from coming into the esophagus. • Stay upright. Stay upright after eating a meal for at least three hours. In bed, sleep on a slight angle by raising the head of the bed a few inches. GERD can be painful, but with a few changes, people can overcome this condition.
Stress management tips for the sandwich generation (NC) — It can be challenging to juggle your time to meet the concurrent needs of children and aging parents who all require your attention and care. There are some things you can do to achieve a better balance of work and caring responsibilities. Learn more about the illness or condition. If
you’re supporting a relative with a chronic illness, or a condition like dementia, speak to their doctor or a healthcare professional to find strategies that can help you care for them. You can also seek out a local support group to connect with others who are going through the same things; the more you know about the illness, the easi-
er it will be to cope. Practice self-care. It’s important that you don’t forget about your own needs and wants, and make time for yourself. Making sure you get enough exercise, sleep well, and eat healthy foods can go a long way towards keeping your mind and body up to the task of car-
ing for your family. Create time to do the things and hobbies you enjoy, like reading, socializing with friends, or taking a walk. Keep family in the loop. A group email chain or online chat group can quickly and efficiently give siblings and family updates, and make sharing responsibilities easier. This can also free up
time spent on the phone for something more productive or to simply relax. You can also share schedules, documents and financials through cloudbased services to facilitate coordinating appointments and other details. Explore government financial support. As our population ages, there
is more assistance for Canadians who are providing care to loved ones through the Family Caregivers Tax Credit, and Employment Insurance Special Benefits for those caring for a dying relative or a critically ill child. These resources can lessen the financial strain and give you one less thing to worry about.
