Kamsack author releases second book By Thom Barker Staff Writer Kamsack author G. D. (Gerald) Benneke brings local history to life again in his second book, Promised Land: Home and Family. Both Home and Family Book One: Love and Hate follow the Buechler family
in a fictionalized version of Benneke’s own family story. Love and Hate finds Carl Buechler, the eldest, setting off from the United States for the untamed Canadian prairies to seek his family’s fortune. The naive young man finds the Assiniboia Territory harsh in climate
and bitter in conflict, but he works tirelessly to build a home and a life for himself and his family. Success and failure are his constant companions, but he perseveres. In Book Two, that perseverance sees the Buechlers realizing their dream of prosperity and community in a land that is
slowly becoming civilized. They have what they came for, but the prospect of disaster striking is never far from mind as they attempt to achieve security for future generations. This is a story not far removed from many local people whose parents or grandparents home-
steaded in this area. Benneke grew up on the stories of his immigrant grandparents and their harrowing journey to seek a better life in an unknown country. He holds an degree in Education from the University of Saskatchewan and taught
English and History in various Saskatchewan schools before returning to the family homestead where he is now the fourth generation to own and operate the farm. The self-published volumes are available at Coles Books in the Parkland Mall and through www.friesenpress.com.
Saskatchewan calls for full repeal of COOL Today, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart reiterated the importance of the U.S. Senate’s outright repeal of Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) for beef and pork. “Frankly, this issue has been dragging on for far too long,” Stewart said. “The expense and loss for our cattle and hog producers has been significant. The U.S. has had more than enough time to do
the right thing and fully repeal COOL for beef and pork. If COOL isn’t fully repealed for beef and pork, we will get to the point where retaliation is inevitable. While the costs for both Canada and the U.S. will be enormous, the U.S. must comply with their trade obligations.” The World Trade Organization (WTO) originally ruled in 2012 that COOL was discriminatory
to Canadian hog and beef exports. A final ruling by the WTO in May, 2015 reaffirmed that the U.S. COOL measure is inconsistent with international trade commitments. On June 10, 2015 the U.S. House passed a bill that would allow for the outright repeal of COOL for beef and pork while avoiding retaliation. However, a new Bill calling for voluntary label-
“Old dogs” ride for charity By Thom Barker Staff Writer A group of cyclists is proving you can teach an old dog new tricks. It started out basically as a dare eight years ago. Yorkton and Kamsack lawyer Tom Campbell and Joe Kosakewich, a loans manager at Affinity Credit Union in Kamsack had been doing bicycle trips from Kamsack to Madge Lake, a distance of approximately 30 kilometres. They mused about doing a trip to Yorkton and back, more than 160 kilometres. Derek Wolkowski, owner of Wolkowski Funeral Service bet them each $100 that they wouldn’t do it. They did, donated the money to charity and the Old Dog Run was born. Now in its ninth year, the annual trip has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Kamsack organizations such as the Kamsack Playhouse and the Eaglestone Lodge per-
sonal care home. Riders have come from as far away as Saskatoon to take part. This year’s run, set to take place this Saturday, August 8, will be raising cash for a wheelchair accessible park at Victoria School. The riders will take off at 6:30 a.m. from the Track Side Gardens. Quality
Tire in Yorkton, one of the event sponsors will provide lunch when the cyclists arrive in Yorkton sometime around noon. When they get back to Kamsack there will be crowds and a beer gardens awaiting. Campbell said all are welcome to join in, as long as they are over 50 years of age, hence “old dog.”

“Tomorrow’s success starts today” We’re at that point in the season where the crops have peaked and will give the best picture of what you’ve done all year. Because of this, it’s the perfect time to evaluate the work that you put in and decide the degree of success you’ve achieved with your early season, foliar and fungicide programs. Early season programs like seed treatments, nutrient seed dressings and amount of fertilizer applied may not seem important when evaluating the final product but will be reflected in a number of ways. A quality plant stand and evenness across the field are two tell-tale signs that your early season program was successful. A poor display in either of these areas means you should be re-evaluating your program and plan to give your crop the jumpstart it needs at emergence in 2016. When considering your foliar program, there are many qualities of your individual plants to think about. Factors such as root structure, leaf surface area, shade of green, leaf symmetry, evenness of stages, quantity and quality of seeds and pod count are all features to be considered when judging if your foliar program was successful. When possible, compare plants that had foliar applications to plants that went without and note the potential difference. It can be as easy as taking a picture with your phone to refer back to in the winter. All characteristics contribute to building a quality healthy plant. Remember quality drives yield. Fusarium will start to be evident at this point in the season and finding signs are a good way to gauge if you should have applied fungicide or if the fungicide you did apply was effective. Fusarium Head Blight includes parts of the head turning white with pink glumes and possible kernel absence depending on maturity. Empty rows or aborted seeds on the head can be a sign of Septoria Glume Blotch which would have climbed up the plant from infected leaves. We may not have expected this result with the dry growing season but yield and grain quality may be impacted. If you’re thinking about making some revisions to your early season, foliar or fungicide programs or would like a second set of eyes to take a look, come down to P & H in Yorkton and get the information you may need for next year’s success! Remember, at Parrish & Heimbecker we are striving to earn your business by moving tradition forward!

When the power is out, the things we need to work are not. The freezer can last a day, the fridge for maybe eight hours, but the sump pump is far less forgiving. There are many quick ways to solve the problem of the water rising. If you are home and don’t mind putting in a bit of work, a manual mud pump is excellent and durable. Designed to last a very long time and move a lot of liquid very quickly for around
$300, and hooked up to the same drainage line as your sump pump and ready to go should the power fail. Next is a battery backup unit which is plugged into the wall and the pump has a ready power source when needed. They start at $275 for a small unit, and will last two or three days if the pump only has to run intermittently, but if the pump has a lot of work to do, then much less. Battery backup units are inexpensive and work whether you home or not to protect against flood damage. A solar panel can be connected as well to prolong the battery charge.
Considering that most insurance policies are not covering flood damage any more, these investments will go a long way and give peace of mind. Next week we will look at more unique ways to keep the power flowing.
(especially inhaled steroids) often are used, as are medicines to relax the muscles inside airways to relieve obstruction. In severe cases, oxygen is necessary. Lung surgery or transplantation is rarely used. The booklet on COPD explains both emphysema and chronic bronchitis in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Parkinson’s disease. Although my medication is still working, it’s not as effective as it was. I have heard that this is the time
to consider stem-cell treatment. Can you tell me if this is a good idea? — S.A. ANSWER: Parkinson’s disease is caused by the loss of neurons (nerve calls) in a portion of the brain called the substantia nigra. Stem cells are early, unspecialized cells, capable of differentiating into any kind of cell. The theory with stem-cell treatment is that the stem cells will go into the affected part of the brain and take on the role of the damaged or destroyed cells. Some early work has been promising. In my view, the technology is not yet ready for widespread clinical use. I don’t recommend it. There are many new medications for Parkinson’s disease, and
I have recommended non-pharmacologic therapy, including exercise, several times. I strongly recommend evaluation by an expert, preferably a neurologist experienced in Parkinson’s disease. A reader recently wrote to tell me that treatment of his vitamin D deficiency greatly relieved his Parkinson’s symptoms. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive Orlando, FL 32803.
The average value of food in my fridge and freezer is about $1500, and at least $750 per each additional freezer. Whether yours is worth more or less, it’s a costly loss if your power is not restored quickly. If by chance you are in the market for a new fridge or freezer, might I suggest a solar powered or battery backup unit? The additional cost is more than a traditional unit but worth the investment. Starting at $1200 for 8 cubic feet and comes with everything you need to keep your food frozen. Knowing that your food is protected is a relieving thought. Also,
depending on the size you want these units can easily be used for camping as well.
Summer storms are one of my favorite occurrences during our warmest months of the year. I’m sure I am not alone in admiring the tremendous awe of the bolts of lightning and the “God-is-bowling” thunder. The respect that a single summer storm can command is amazing, espe-
cially when it has caused the power to be knocked out. Perhaps the problem of having no power in the summer isn’t as serious as having no electricity in the winter months, but daily I speak to people who will say otherwise. In this article I will shine some light if you are standing in the dark. The costs of long term outages can really start to add up. Consider that most people have a fridge and maybe one or two freezers.
DEAR DR. ROACH: Please help me to understand what COPD means. — S. ANSWER: “COPD” stands for “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.” “Chronic” means that it is longlasting, and “obstructive” means the airflow in and out of the lungs is decreased. The three subtypes of COPD are chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive asthma. These conditions usually are progressive. COPD is
the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Chronic bronchitis is a chronic productive cough (specifically, lasting three months or more in two successive years). Smoking is far and away the leading cause of chronic bronchitis in the developed world, but home cooking fires are the cause in developing nations. “Emphysema” means the destruction of the walls of the airways, causing abnormal, permanently enlarged air spaces. Smoking is again the leading cause of emphysema, but a genetic condition, alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, can bring about both emphysema and liver disease. People with this uncommon disorder sometimes mistakenly are assumed
to be smokers. Asthma is a common condition that is highly variable from person to person. Most people have reversible obstruction to the airway with exacerbations of asthma, but some people have a degree of obstruction all the time, and they are considered to have COPD. COPD typically causes cough and shortness of breath, especially with activity. COPD often has exacerbations, which may be associated with infections, that cause worsening of symptoms, frequently requiring treatment, including hospitalization. Treatment for COPD is to remove any known cause (usually smoking, even secondhand smoke). Medicines to reduce inflammation

be great at parties, and while that is so not true anymore, it wouldn’t have made a difference anyway because we never would have made it to any party ... we barely made it out of the Coolidge administration before we realized we had bitten off more of the big leagues than we could chew. A few ground rules: no bathroom humor, no ethnic jokes. If the player had a nickname, he had to be known solely by
that nickname to qualify. For instance, nobody referred to “Babe” Ruth as “George” Ruth. A good qualifier would be the restaurant test. Could the player reserve a table at a restaurant with his moniker? If yes, put him on the team. To make this even more difficult, we eliminated all of the cool baseball names and/or baseball specific names that we weren’t quite sure if they were cool or not ... names like Honus, Ty, Cy,
Nap and Tris, plus Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Hack Wilson, Yogi Berra, Duke Snider. I’m gonna throw Rocky Colavito and Joe Pepitone in there for good measure, too. Those are the given few. So, here’s what we came up with. We know we probably missed your favorite, so feel free to send us your suggestion on Twitter @sportingview. We’ll make sure they get a table reserved in advance.
offers. Then decide what you’ll do with what you find. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Driving yourself too hard to get something done on a deadline you set up can backfire. Ease into a more realistic finish date, and add more breaks to your work schedule. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of humor can brighten any dark period, and your laughter can dispel those gray clouds swirling around you. The weekend presents a surprising
but welcome change. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about the words you use, especially in touchy situations. The old Chinese saying that the spoken word is silver, but the unspoken gold could well apply here. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some facts could emerge to shed light on unresolved past problems. What you learn also might help explain why a once-warm relationship suddenly cooled down. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Don’t let your pride get in the way of checking into what could be a great new opportunity. Get the facts first, and worry about procedure
and protocol later. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A health problem in the family might have other relatives assuming that, as before, you’ll take over the health-care duties. Surprise them and insist they share in the caretaking. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A series of changes can be unsettling, but in the long run, it can pay off with new perspectives on what you plan to do. Keep your mind open to the possibilities that might well lie ahead. BORN THIS WEEK: You might be under a “royal” sign, but you have a wonderful way of embracing everyone as an equal.

A lot of these guys could really hit. Ping Bodie was Babe Ruth’s roommate and was a smack talker extraordinaire. Coco Crisp is a contemporary, and we know that kid can run and hit and kick. Minnie Minoso should be in the Hall of Fame. And Billy Batsch? Well, we had a real problem with Billy Batsch. Bill was a made guy, a good fella ... but that’s a whole other story. HOLLYWOOD — “World War Z” was conceived as a trilogy, but plans for the sequel were scrapped when costs for the original film ballooned to $190 million. However, thanks to the power of star Brad Pitt (also one of the producers), it grossed $540 million. Now the sequel is back on track with the working title of “World War Z 2,” which will open January 2017. Matt Damon, absent from “The Bourne Legacy” (2012), will be back as Jason Bourne in “Bourne 5.” This time Jeremy Renner will be missing, but Julia Stiles will return, and Viggo Mortensen will be his stalker. Damon has “The Martian,” with Jessica Chastain, out Oct. 2, and “The Great Wall,” coming November
Chris (31) is now hitting screens in “Vacation,” with Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann and original “National Lampoon’s Vacation” stars Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo. “The Huntsman,” the sequel to “Snow White and the Huntsman,” minus Snow White (Kristen Stewart), has Charlize Theron returning as Queen Ravenna, with Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, due April 22, 2016. Then Chris will do the male counterpart of Annie Potts receptionist in the original “Ghostbusters” in the new all-girl reboot

Caribbean dishes reflect the influence of a wide variety of cultures and cuisines, including British, Dutch, French, Spanish, East Indian, West African, Portuguese and Chinese. The cooking technique that made Jamaica famous is the spicy jerk marinade that’s used for both meats and vegetables. The name is derived from the way the meat is poked or “jerked” with a sharp object to create the holes where spices are inserted. Jerk cooking dates back to the Carib-Arawak Indians who inhabited Jamaica in the 1600s. After capturing an animal and thoroughly cleaning it, the carcass was “jerked” and the resulting holes were stuffed with spices. Hot peppers and herbs were plentiful on the islands and were used as a preservative before refrigeration was available. The spices also acted as a marinade and a way to tenderize tough cuts of wild game. To cook the jerked meat, the Indians dug a deep pit and lined it with stones. The pit was filled with green pimento wood, which when burned would smoke heavily and add to the flavor. The holes in the meat also allowed heat to escape without loss of moisture. Marinades based on hot peppers and herb combinations were created by the Indians and the West African Cormantee to flavor and preserve a variety of meats. Jerk marinade has four main ingredients: Scotch bonnet peppers, whole allspice berries, scallions (also called green onions or spring onions) and
thyme. For best results, the meat should marinate in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours. After marinating, the meat should slowly be smoked over a low fire. Using pimento (allspice), apple, mesquite or hickory wood chips provides an intense smoke that will permeate the meat and create an authentic jerk flavor. The wood chips should be soaked in water for at least 30 minutes before placing them on the coals. This slow-smoking method also makes the meat moist and tender. Jerk marinades are a wonderful way to add spice and a touch of the Caribbean to your barbeque menu. This recipe for Jerk Pork uses the traditional marinade recipe; however, other spices can be incorporated to create your own variation. JERK PORK Jerk marinades typically use Scotch bonnet peppers, one of the hottest peppers in the world. Remember to always wear gloves when preparing fresh peppers. It’s best to remove the stems and seeds with your gloved fingers or paring knife. Removing the seeds doesn’t affect the flavor, but greatly decreases the heat. Afterward, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and cold water and clean any utensils or surfaces you have used. •1/3 cup vegetable oil •1/3 cup distilled white vinegar •4 green onions, chopped
•2 cloves garlic, chopped •2 to 5 Scotch Bonnet peppers, seeded and minced, to taste •3 bay leaves •3 peppercorns •1 tablespoon dried ground cinnamon •3 to 4 whole allspice berries, lightly crushed •1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg •3 pounds pork chops, about 1 inch thick Combine oil and vinegar in a small bowl. Stir in green onions, garlic, peppers, bay leaves, peppercorns, cinnamon, allspice, pepper and nut-
meg. Trim any excess fat from pork chops. Place pork chops in a re-sealable plastic bag. Pour spice mixture over them, coating each chop well. Place bag of pork chops in a baking pan and refrigerate to marinate up to 24 hours, turning once or twice every four hours. Allow chops to come to room temperature before grilling. Heat grill until coals are somewhat white with ash; the flame should be low. Place chops on grill and cover with lid. Grill 5 to 10 minutes per side, until the chops are no longer pink in center. Serves 4 to 6.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Match” (R) — Patrick Stewart runs the screen as Tobi Powell, a Juilliard dance instructor with a big personality layered over a more complicated man. He’s asked for an interview by Lisa (Carla Gugino), who is writing her dissertation about the 1960s dance scene in New York. Lisa’s husband, Mike (Matthew Lillard), also comes along from Seattle, and through his involvement it seems there might be some other motive behind the interview. As the questions probe deeper into Tobi’s personal past, conflict shakes the dynamic between the three characters. While the movie has some issues associated with stage-to-movie adaptations, it’s nothing that overshadows the performances. “I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story” (PG) — For more than 45 years, Carroll Spinney has been the life behind the felt of some of the world’s favorite chil-
Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara in “Hot Pursuit” dren’s characters. This documentary goes into the career and mindset of the man who continues to suit up and play Big Bird into his 80s. The story touches on the early days of Jim Henson and the Muppets, Spinney’s rough early years and the personal doubts that almost pushed him out when he was just getting started. It shows how Spinney is the soul inside Big Bird’s gentle, curious, huggable nature. It’s a touching, well-made tribute that gets you right in the childhood. “Patch Town” (NR) — A worker in a comedically bleak factory, Jon (Rob Ramsay) looks like a Cabbage Patch doll grown to uncomfortable adulthood — curly puff hair, plump cheeks, babyangel eyes with a splash of innocent cheerfulness. Unfortunately, he works on an assembly line, pulling goo-covered babies out of cabbages, then sending them off to be given as living dolls. Jon comes to the earthshattering realization that he’s a discarded doll, and decides to escape the factory and seek out the girl who was once his “Mommy,” but has now grown up. This bizarre and unexpected darkish comedy is well worth checking out. TV RELEASES “WWE: Very Best of Nitro Vol. 3” “Haikyu!! DOG OF THE WEEK “Hot Pursuit” (PG13) — This no-laugh riot gives us something original by taking the Bickering Buddies on the Run formula, heading it with two likable female talents, and then somehow making it SO ANNOYING. Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) is an uptight Nervous Nelly cop placed in charge of Daniella (Sofia Vergara), the vivacious wife of a drug kingpin, who’s set to testify at an upcoming big-deal court case. Wacky circumstances make the Shrill Couple the target of both cops and gangsters as they try to get to Dallas alive. Witherspoon is short and Vergara has a funny accent. That’s the joke that gets run into the ground over a very brief run-time. When the movie isn’t polishing that bit of comedy gold, there’s usually a great deal of shrieking, tired cliches and humorless chatter to pass the time.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Sometimes my cat “Bink starts making “horking noises and occasionally after some time will cough up a little ball of hair. But other times he just makes the noises without producing anything. Should I be concerned? — Karl in Des Moines, Iowa DEAR KARL: You can always contact your cat’s veterinarian if you’re unsure about a potential health issue. In this case, Bink may be simply dealing with hairballs or trying to cough one up. According to Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, it’s not unusual for a healthy cat to cough up a hairball every week or two. These vary in size but are rarely round because the esophagus compresses them somewhat as they are brought up. Hairballs

are just that: a clump of indigestible hair, typically swallowed while a cat is grooming itself. Sometimes they’ll bring them up with a bit of undigested food as well, which is always a pleasure to clean up, right? If a cat has several episodes of retching without producing a hairball, or if it vomits or is lethargic, contact the vet. It could have another problem, either digestive or even respiratory, that only the vet can diagnose and treat. So, can you prevent hairballs in cats? No, not really. Grooming is natural and healthy, and hairballs are a by-product of this. You might be able to reduce their size and frequency by feeding Bink a diet that keeps his coat healthy, with less shedding. Groom him often, even daily, to remove shed hairs. Should you give him a hairball remedy? Many vets recommend against it, as they do little to minimize hairballs. ed not to see the character of Bran Stark this past season in “Game of Thrones.” Will he be in season six? — Holly R., via email A: Bran indeed will be back, with Isaac Hempstead Wright reprising his role of the paralyzed vision-seer. He was benched this past season to give the TV series a chance to catch up with where his character is in the book series, and also to give his character time to develop his warg skills with the Three-Eyed Raven. Isaac revealed to the Irish Examiner: “I can’t say a lot, but I am back this [next] season, and it’s going to get particularly interesting with Bran. He has some interesting visions.” Q: I’m going through some serious “Walking Dead” withdrawal! — Kallie D., via Twitter A: Keep steady, Kallie.
