The weather may still be quite warm for this time of year, and there may not be a lot of snow, but the need to cut the lawn has passed for 2015. Here Gordon Paul puts away the riding lawn mower for the winter season, instead of taking it out for one last mow.

Canora celebrates new health and wellness centre Today, Canora celebrated the grand opening of the Health and Wellness Centre in the newly-renovated space at Canora Hospital. The primary health care clinic and Collaborative Emergency Centre (CEC) have recently been colocated at the centre to better serve patients. Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit and CanoraPelly MLA Ken Krawetz joined residents, health care providers, local dignitaries and health region representatives at the event. “Canora Health and Wellness Centre is a great example of patientcentred care,” Ottenbreit said. “It provides a ‘one stop shop’ for patients, where they can receive stable, timely access to health services in the community. Our government is pleased to support this model of care that enhances the patient experience while improving work-life balance for our excellent health care providers.” The Canora project

involved three components: the CEC model to stabilize emergency department coverage, extended hours of primary health care appointments, and construction of the Canora Health and Wellness Centre to bring the team together under one roof. “The Canora Health and Wellness Centre is well designed and our hospital patients, the emergency department, lab and x-ray departments are all close,“ Canora Health and Wellness Centre Dr. Hamed Afshari said. ”As a member of the primary health care team, I can offer my patients more options for appointment times and, because the CEC takes over in the evening, I am able to spend more time with my family. It is a very good system and one that attracted me to Canora.” The provincial government contributed $775,000 toward the renovation at the Canora Hospital and is providing $375,000 in annual funding to support the

SGI changes approved Government has approved a number of recommendations put forward by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) for changes to its Safe Driver Recognition program. The changes are in response to customer input and analysis undertaken by SGI over the past few years. “Throughout the review of the Safe Driver Recognition program, there was a common theme we kept hearing – safe drivers deserve higher rewards and risky drivers deserve tougher penalties,” Minister responsible for SGI Don McMorris said. “Well, you asked and we listened. The changes increase vehicle insurance discounts for the safest drivers and toughen penalties for unsafe driving.” Changes are: The safety rating scale will grow to +25, allowing the safest drivers to earn a discount on basic vehicle insurance of up to 25 per cent. Financial penalties will double from $25 to $50 per point for drivers in the penalty zone. All manually-enforced speeding convictions will result in loss of points under the program. All at-fault collisions will result in loss of points, but the program will take the seriousness of a collision into consideration. Drivers who cause collisions with claim payouts under $700 will lose four points. Those who cause collisions with claim payouts of $700 or more will lose six points.

operation of the CEC in Canora. The Town of Canora, several surrounding municipalities and the local health foundation have pledged additional funding of approximately $200,000 to cover primary health clinic equipment, furniture and other expenses. “Thank you to the community for their support and to the health region and health care providers for their leadership and hard work to make this happen,” Krawetz said. “This new centre is a wonderful example of how great ideas and partnerships benefit residents and help keep Saskatchewan strong.” “The Town of Canora

has long promised a lifestyle focused on strong family values that are centred around small town living with great education, wide recreation opportunities and the very best possible health care,” Canora Mayor Gina Rakochy said. “The Health and Wellness Centre is a testament to one of those pillars.” Since July of 2014, the first two phases of the CEC model were in operation. The emergency department nighttime model has been in place at the Canora Hospital and extended hours of primary health care available at the Canora Medical Clinic, which

was downtown. “We are very pleased with how well the CEC model of care is working in Canora,” Sunrise Health Region President and CEO Suann Laurent said. “Since the CEC model was implemented, there have been no emergency department service interruptions, and primary health care appointments are more accessible with longer weekday hours and weekend appointment times available.” Canora is the third fully implemented CEC in Saskatchewan. CECs help provide access to stable, reliable health services and alleviate emergency service dis-

ruptions often experienced by rural communities. The CECs use an innovative model of care that improves access to both primary health care and emergency care. Extended hours of primary health care are offered 12 hours a day weekdays (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Emergency care is provided during the day by a team of physicians in the community. Overnight, emergencies are handled by a registered nurse and paramedic team with access to support from a STARS physician specializing in trauma and emergency.

Liquor sales changing in Sask. More Choice. More Convenience. More Competitive Pricing. Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) Minister Don McMorris announced the new direction at a news conference recently in Regina. The direction includes converting 40 government liquor stores to private stores and adding 12 new private liquor stores in underserved communities. “Saskatchewan consumers will enjoy more choice, more convenience and more competitive pricing,” McMorris said. ”This new direction allows government to collect the same amount of revenue through a new wholesale markup while also correcting many inequities that have existed among the province’s various liquor retailers. “We received a lot of valuable feedback from stakeholders, customers and the general public regarding their thoughts on the future of liquor retailing in the province. This new direction reflects what we heard

and I want to once again thank everyone who took part in the consultation process.” Currently, liquor is retailed by government liquor stores, full-line private stores, rural franchises and off-sale outlets. Within these groups, there are many different rules including different discounts, restrictions on the type of products they can sell, restrictions on what beer products can be refrigerated and differences in how products can be priced. The new expanded private retail model creates a level playing field for liquor retailers. This means all liquor retailers will be treated the same when it comes to: Purchasing alcohol for resale at a wholesale price; Hours of operation; Product selection; and Chilling of beer products and more. Another change will see commercial permittees like restaurants, sports facilities and convention centres able to purchase products from any liquor retailer, rather than the current require-

ment that they purchase exclusively from SLGA liquor stores and franchises. The 40 government liquor stores that will be converted were evaluated on factors like efficiency, investment required and the ability to meet consumer needs. In these communities, affected government liquor store employees will be given preferential consideration during the Request for Proposal (RFP) process for a new store. Details of the

RFP process will be developed over the coming months. The changes will be implemented after the provincial election in April 2016. “There’s a lot of change required to get our retail system where it needs to be and we now have a plan in place,” McMorris said. “In the end, we’ll have a system that’s fair to retailers and beneficial to consumers while also protecting revenues for government priorities like infrastructure, education and health care.”

Fast-forward to 2014: A TNR study conducted in Alachua County, Florida, found that increasing awareness among area residents and encouraging them to TNR feral cats helped reduce the number of cats entering the local shelter by 66

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Mississippi Grind” (R) -Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) has done a whole lot of gambling, and very little winning. Divorced, deluded and deep in debt to a tenacious loan shark (Alfre Woodard), poor Gerry pins his hopes on a younger, better player, Curtis (Ryan Reynolds). Gerry convinces Curtis to join him on a trip down the Mississippi River, from Iowa to New Orleans, placing bets and flipping cards at every stop. Gerry is clearly an addict with tragedy in his bones, but he truly believes that success and happiness is just a good streak away.

Don Piper (Hayden Christensen) was in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on a narrow country bridge. His injuries were so bad that he was Ben Mendelsohn, Ryan Reynolds in d e c l a r e d “Mississippi Grind” dead by first responders. “90 Minutes in Heaven” Through a long recovery, (PG-13) -- Based on a Piper was wracked with real-life memoir, pastor

Sadly, the movie runs out of fun while there’s still plenty of runtime left. The humor comes from the same shtick over and over, and the horror isn’t horrifying. Comedy-horror can exist -- “Shaun of the Dead” proves it -- but this movie doesn’t hit either target.

DOG OF THE WEEK “Some Kind of Beautiful” (R) -- Richard (Pierce Brosnan) is a rak-

ish British professor of literature who practices his romanticism on gorgeous young undergrads. A 25-year-old flame, Kate (Jessica Alba), ends up pregnant with his child, so Richard goes with her to LA -- in one of those sundrenched beach miniresorts that only people in rom-coms can afford -- to raise his son and try being a one-girl kind of guy. Kate falls for an ageappropriate man, leaving Richard to romance her older half-sister, Olivia

(Selma Hayak). Despite her obvious objections to the cad, she is charmed by him, and the audience is somehow supposed to fall for the same trick.

SANTA ANNOUNCES

So it’s road flick, underdog, male-bonding story and addiction drama, but it doesn’t feel pushed along. Mendelsohn rules his role as somebody who’s been beaten down -- so much that he may not have another chance after this one -- but keeps getting up for more. He’s acting against his better judgment, but you want him to win. “Cooties” (R) -- A nasty, not-so-organic chicken nugget served up for cafeteria lunch kicks off a zombie plague inside an elementary school. An unsuccessful young writer, Clint (Elijah Wood), returns to his hometown and takes up working as a substitute teacher. He’s not well-equipped to teach a roomful of children, and even less prepared to fight a whole school of pre-teen zombies. Clint has a crush on fellow faculty member Lucy (Allison Pill), but she’s involved with a dopey gym teacher (Rainn Wilson).

physical pain, as well as a unique emotional pain -- he says he saw heaven in all its glory, only to be ripped back to earth and returned to his broken body. This drama, told out-of-sequence with the events, covers the emotional and spiritual journey of Don and the struggles of his wife, Eva (Kate Bosworth).

when you are home and can clear the sidewalk or driveway as soon as it begins snowing and usually only cost $500 to $1000. Think of these units as more of a powered broom. Next, Two stage or dual stage blowers can be equipped with either wheels or tracks for self-propelled movement. They can remove heavy amounts of snow and throw it a good distance into your neighbor’s yard. Large drifts are no problem for these machines. The main issue is that they are quite heavy and hard to navigate. With wheeled units, you must continually control the cutting height of the machine as the skid plates on the bottom may catch on the ground and stop forward movement. They are easy to steer but still require effort to keep the tires moving on icy roads as well. Track units are more expensive and add the luxury of having an adjustable height control so you do not have

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay There are many different brand names to choose from, and the argument could go on forever as to which name is the best. While I may have some proof as to which brands I have seen endure the best in our Canadian winters, today I would rather focus on which snow blowers is best for your snow removal problem. We get asked all the time about which one is the best for the cheapest. We ask you how much area do you need to cover? There are generally three kinds of snow blower: Single Stage, Two Stage, and Three Stage. The correct machine depends on how big the area and the real problem is: how much snow will there be? Single stage blowers are very light and easy to manage but are only good for removing light fluffy snow. They are great

to manage this yourself. They would easily move over any terrain, but unless your machine has steering controls to manoeuvre the unit left or right, track units are very difficult to turn. Also, Dual stage cannot go through snow that has been pushed up by a tractor or grader. The two stage units are the most common and range from $700 to $5600 depending if you would like bells and whistles from electric start up to steering controls and heated hand warmers. Last, the Three Stage is quite similar to dual stage in form but has an additional impeller on the front to grind through hard snow banks and plowed ridges. The extra horsepower needed makes these machines even heavier and can be a problem to move around, but makes short of any amount of snow winter may through at you. If you live on an acreage, a three stage machine is the largest you can get before needing a tractor with a three point hitch attached snow blower.

Make sure you buy the right machine, not just brand or sale price. Don’t buy a broom to clear the driveway of a three foot snow drift, and don’t buy a huge machine to clean the sidewalk. I will touring throughout the Parkland this winter with different kinds of

Snow blowers this winter, maybe if you buy me a coffee and ask nice I’ll clear your driveway for you! For more info, check out our Facebook page at PROBLEM SOLVED – ALTERNATIVE or email me at service@myps247. com Benjamin Galay is

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I am so happy that “Heroes” is back! Will there be another season? -- DeeDee T., via email A: “Heroes Reborn,” which started airing in September on Thursday nights on NBC, has been billed as an “event miniseries,” although that’s not to say there can’t be another season of this event. I recently spoke with series co-star Gatlin Green, who plays Emily on the show, and she told me she’d be down for continuing her role on the show. Gatlin said: “I think with a show like ‘Heroes,’ or any of these shows that have such big followings, there’s always going to be talk about more seasons, spin-offs and stuff like that. Obviously, anything can happen, and I’d be super happy if something

Gatlin Green

did happen. We’re all on our toes waiting to hear if anything will happen.” Gatlin gave me some minor spoilers to get you through the rest of the run of this miniseries, which wraps in December: “There will be some romance between Emily and Tommy. And, like ‘Heroes’ always does, I think it’s really cool to see how we’ve started seeing the characters cross paths with each other. There’s obviously intense drama and more conflict in certain areas. I think it will be cool to see what happens with all the different characters and all the different storylines. But definitely look forward to plot twists and drama and romance.” Q: A local boy was nominated for a Nickelodeon HALO Award for his service to the community, and I wondered where I can watch the ceremony? -- Fred R., Miami A: Hosted, created and executive-produced by Nick Cannon, the “2015 Nickelodeon HALO Awards” is a oneof-a-kind concert event that honors young leaders from across the country. Now in its seventh year, the awards show recognizes teens who are doing extraordinary things in their communities by Helping and Leading Others (HALO). The ceremony will be simulcast Sunday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. (ET/

PT) across Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nicktoons, TV Land, CMT, Nick.com and the Nick App. Walk the Moon (“Shut Up and Dance”) will perform. The four award honorees are Ethan Cruikshank (16) of Mechanicsville, Virginia; Riley Gantt (15) of Sherman Oaks, California; Joshua

Williams (14) of Miami Beach, Florida; and Ruchita Zaparde (18) of Plainsboro, New Jersey. Q: Can you give me any “Nashville” news? -- Eric P., Lancaster, Pennsylvania A: Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor, singer and guitarist Steve Kazee will join the show

as Riff in early 2016. His character is described as a country-music star at the top of his game 10 years ago; however, everything changed when he met Heidi, a Southern beauty with a budding musical career of her own. He fell in love and chose to leave fame and fortune behind for

life with Heidi. But since he’s a new character on the nighttime sudster, I’ll assume it didn’t work out and he’s trying to make a musical comeback. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.

Candied Sweet Potatoes If you wish, sprinkle with sliced almonds, chopped walnuts or chopped pecans before serving. Or top with tiny marshmallows and broil about 6 inches away from the source of heat until lightly browned. 4 large sweet potatoes (12 ounces each), each peeled, cut crosswise in half, and each half cut lengthwise into 3 wedges 2 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/3 cup packed brown sugar

* Three ways to use an empty tissue box: 1) store plastic grocery bags inside; 2) line with a small plastic trash bag and use in your car as a travel trash can; 3) cut out the bottom and use it to disguise an extra toilet tissue roll in your guest bath! * Love oranges? Save the peels to add to your potpourri mix. Remove as much of the pith as possible, and cut into strips. Air dry in bright light for about a week. Or you can set the strips on parchment and dry in a partially closed oven set to 175 F for about 45 minutes. Check often. * “When the last serving of jam has been used, I will happily add some oil and vinegar to the jar, along with a few choice spices, then shake. It’s an instant vinaigrette, with a fruity tang.” -- C.L. in Tennessee * Keep your jeans or other denim items from fading by soaking them in a solution of cold water and salt (two tablespoons to a gallon) for about an hour before washing. * How can you keep snow and ice off your windshield? Some say a solution of three parts vinegar to one part water sprayed on the windshield each night can cut your ice-scraping time in half or better. (Use caution to avoid your paint job.) Try covering your wipers with an old pair of long socks so they don’t freeze to the glass! * “To clean a can opener, get it wet and run a folded paper towel through it while turning the handle. Works best if done after each use.” -- H.P. in Washington Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

3 tablespoons butter or margarine, cut into pieces 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne) 2 tablespoons dry sherry (optional) 1. Heat oven to 375 F. In 5-quart Dutch oven, combine sweet potatoes, enough water to cover and 2 teaspoons salt; heating to boiling over high heat. Boil until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain. 2. Meanwhile, in nonstick 10-inch skillet, combine brown sugar, butter, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and ground red pepper; heat over medium

heat, stirring, until butter melts, about 1 minute. Stir in sherry, if using. Cook, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes longer. 3. Transfer potatoes to shallow 13-by-9-inch baking dish and top with brown-sugar mixture. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes, stirring halfway through baking. Remove foil and bake until syrup is dark and very thick, 30 to 40 minutes, stirring halfway through. In 10-inch skillet, heat 1 inch water to boiling over high heat. Add onions; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer until tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Drain. 2. When cool enough to handle, peel onions, leaving a little of root end attached to help onions hold their shape.

3. Meanwhile, prepare white sauce: In heavy 2-quart saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Add flour and cook, stirring, 1 minute. With wire whisk, gradually whisk in hot milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon, until mixture has thickened and boils. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring frequently, 3 minutes. Stir in salt, pepper and nutmeg; remove from heat. 4. Return onions to skillet. Add sauce and cook, stirring, until heated through. Makes 10 servings. * Each serving: About 87 calories, 5g total fat (3g saturated), 2g protein, 8g carbohydrate, 5g total fat (3g saturated), 16mg chol-

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 87 and have an enlarged prostate. When I get the urge to urinate, which is often, I have to go at once. Do you think that taking a bladder-control medicine would interfere with the

Cardura (doxazosin) I’m taking to keep my urine duct (urethra) open? It’s getting to be a big problem. Hope you can help me. -- CB ANSWER: Both men and women can have urinary urgency (the sensation of needing to go right away), and sometimes this can lead to accidents. In women, the problem usually is attributed to bladder spasm, and in men it may be attributed erroneously to the prostate. Of course, it is possible to have both prostate problems like

benign enlargement of the gland and bladder spasm, but oftentimes the problem in men is solely the bladder. Some people need treatment for both, and there are no interactions I could find between doxazosin and bladder spasm agents like Detrol (tolterodine) or Ditropan (oxybutynin). The booklet on men’s health discusses prostate gland enlargement. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: I read and hear of great health benefits attributed to eating nuts. I have a very healthy heart, but no one can consider himself beyond the specter of cancer. Also, possibly my neurological or other systems that deteriorate with age could benefit from eating nuts. Unfortunately, eating nuts or peanuts results in constipation that can last for days. Foods with dairy or egg components give me the same problem. Do I do myself a disservice by not eating nuts? Should I consider episodes of constipation worth the benefits? -- J.M. ANSWER: I have carefully read the new studies on nuts, and they confirm previous studies showing

that nut consumption is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and overall death and, as you note, reduced cancer risk as well. However, this doesn’t prove that eating nuts reduces those risks. It is possible that people who eat nuts have other behaviors that are really responsible for their lower risk of disease. However, the authors of the study did as good a job as possible to reduce that possibility. In your case, I would think of nuts as a medicine. You have to consider the benefits (possibly lower risk of cancer and other diseases) against the side effects (constipation, which can be very unpleasant and reduce quality of life). One estimate is that nut consumption may increase lifespan by as much as a year. You may have less benefit than other people from nut consumption because of your healthy heart. That would make me less likely to recommend nut consumption for you. If your constipation were more than mildly annoying, I probably wouldn’t “prescribe” nuts. Similarly, people with nut allergies, which are increasingly common, cannot enjoy the health benefits of nuts. Only you can determine if the modest improvement in (possible) life expectancy is worth the symptoms.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers

* It was Scottish novelist and politician John Buchan who made the following sage observation: “We can pay our debt to the past by putting the future in debt to ourselves.” * The general board of the prestigious University of Cambridge has recommended that the institution hire a Professor of Lego. Yep. The lucky academic will head up the Research Centre on Play in Education, Development and Learning. On a

related note, Cambridge recently received a donation of more than $6 million from the Lego Foundation. * If you happen to have 40 billion Lego bricks lying around, you could, theoretically, build a tower to the moon. * Single-shot coffee makers like Keurig are increasingly popular, but the inventor of the K-Cup coffee pods doesn’t actually use them himself. John Sylvan says, “I don’t have one. They’re kind of expensive to use.” He

added, “It’s not like drip coffee is tough to make.” * Beloved British author Charles Dickens was forced to go to work at the age of 11, pasting labels on bottles of shoe polish in a boot-blacking factory. Soon after, his father was put in debtors’ prison, and when his mother and siblings went to live with him there; young Charles was left to live on the streets and fend for himself. It’s not surprising, then, that after Dickens achieved the great success he enjoyed as a writer, he was an ardent campaigner for children’s rights. * If you plan to become a patriotic citizen of Greece, I hope you have a good memory: The Greek national anthem has a whopping 158 verses.

When it came to the demands of a graduate student on a hunger strike and a football team on a general strike, exactly what did University of Missouri system President Tim Wolfe not know, and when did he not know it?

By now, you cannot be pardoned if you are unaware of the continued racially motivated unrest that appears to be occurring in Missouri on a regular basis. Ferguson, a satellite city of St. Louis, for instance, has managed to appear in the news once or twice during the past few years. Did you know that Ferguson is the birthplace of former Doobie Brother Michael McDonald? No, you probably didn’t. That’s

because the lame-stream media chooses to focus on the negatives, narrowly focusing on the fact that the city also happens to be the death place of former black resident Michael Brown. But let us give credit to Tim Wolfe for being both color blind and tone deaf. There were racially motivated incidents on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. Wolfe allegedly was a direct participant in one of the incidents. When he resigned, he said he did so out of “love and he looked genuinely shocked at the level of concern. There was a kid STARVING himself to death on campus for eight days by that time, and the entire Missouri football team was about to surround the chancellor’s residence at Providence Point. How clueless was this guy? Who was his adviser? Rasputin? Did he pose for one last picture with his family in the basement? Missouri is lucky in the fact that it has a solid governor in Jay Nixon. Nixon, who sent the tin soldiers into Ferguson to quell violence and unrest while napalming CNN’s Don Lemon -- a timetested, fail-proof tactic that always leads to deescalation and hugs all around in riot situations -- approved of Wolf’s resignation. Echoing the words of former United States

President Richard Nixon, who once famously resigned office in order to “hasten the start of that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America, Gov. Nixon (no relation to the former president) wrote that Wolf’s “resignation was a necessary step toward healing and reconciliation [in] Missouri while outside, on cam-

pus, students literally were singing “We Shall Overcome. The only thing missing was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Say what you will about Missouri, but make sure to give credit to the students there (I studied at UMKC myself for a time) and to the athletic department. In an intolerant world, this is the program that supported

LGBT rights by supporting Michael Sam, and they have become, as far as I know, the first football team to ever kick a sitting university president out on his ass. Keep up the fight Tigers ... right behind you, everyone is with you. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Cancer clinical trials Men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer can take to the Internet to explore their options with regard to clinical trials. Such trials typically explore potential cancer treatments, and researchers conducting these studies need participants to determine if these prospective treatments are effective. Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, ClinicalTrials. gov lists tens of thousands of studies in all 50 states within the United States and 189 countries overall. Interested men

and women can search certain using into the site’s search engine to find studies linked to their disease or conditions. Such an extensive database can be a great resource for cancer patients looking for clinical trials, but the sheer volume of studies within the database can be hard for some to navigate, leading to confusion with regard to participation eligibility. But men and women diagnosed with cancer should know that there are more specialized websites that list clinical trials, such as Breast-CancerTrials.org,

which can make it easier for patients to find trials relevant to their disease. B r e a s t C a n c e r Tr i a l s . org includes only studies already registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, but the description of each study is rewritten in an effort to make it easier for patients to understand each study and the eligibility requirements to participate. Additional clinical trialmatching services, such as CancerTrialsHelp. org, are available online for patients looking to explore their options with regard to clinical trials.

What to do if you fill up your car with the wrong fuel (NC) — Gasoline in a diesel tank or diesel in a gasoline tank; either way it’s not great news. The wrong kind of fuel can cause serious damage to your engine. But don’t panic; just follow these four simple steps. If you haven’t started the engine: 1. Don’t start the engine. 2. Tell a gas station attendant what’s happened. 3. Ask someone to help you push your car out of the way. 4. Call a towing company so they can tow your car to a mechanic who will drain the fuel. If the fuel hasn’t been drawn into the engine, you may get away with no damage at all. If you have started the engine: Don’t start it again unless you have to, such as you are in an unsafe position and have no one to help you push your car. Things may be more difficult if you’ve driven the car, as the wrong fuel can damage your engine if it’s drawn through the system. 1. Make sure you’re parked in a safe place. 2. Make sure your ignition is off. 3. Call your mechanic and the towing company. 4. Call your insurer. A mechanic will need to drain your tank of fuel and you’ll probably need the filter replaced to protect your engine.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Wyatt asked Ivy for a significant favor while he was away. Liam was more certain about his plan for the future than any other decision he ever made. With Wyatt conveniently out of town and a storm rolling in, Thomas tried to seduce Ivy. Even though deep down he was concerned about Ivy being under the same roof as Thomas, Wyatt refused to admit it. Liam turned down Bill’s offer to travel internationally. Steffy didn’t want to spoil her romantic evening with Liam by telling him what Thomas was doing. Quinn took advantage of being alone with her son to tell him what she really thought about his relationship with Ivy. As the storm passing through Los Angeles intensified, so did the chemistry between Ivy and Thomas. Wait to See: Eric, Brooke and Rick share a fond memory of Stephanie. DAYS OF OUR LIVES A furious Marlena confronted Stefano about Sami’s kidnapping. Kayla took matters into her own hands when Steve received another anonymous message. Sami offered to make a deal with Andre. After years of being kept apart, Bo and Hope finally made love. Rafe received an unexpected request. Steve and Kayla found themselves in a romantic situation. Abe told Theo the truth about Lani. Bo’s family threw him a surprise welcome home party. Chad tried to track down Abigail, who was going into premature labor. John and Marlena figured out a way to gain leverage against the DiMeras. Wait to See: Bo makes a heartbreaking confession to Hope. GENERAL HOSPITAL Jason sought Spinelli’s help to learn more about his past. Lulu misinterpreted an email from

Mary Beth Evans stars as “Kayla” on “Days of Our Lives” Valerie. Elizabeth and Sam began searching for Jason together. Plagued by guilt, Anna decided to visit her psychiatrist again. Hayden tried to uncover the truth about who shot her. Morgan asked Kiki to come away with him. Patrick and Sonny discussed the ramifications of Jason’s presence in Port Charles. Nathan investigated Carly’s car accident. Morgan encouraged Kiki to apply for a job. Paul questioned Ava’s ambition. A determined Sonny worked on his physical therapy with the help of his trainer, who turned out to be Epiphany. Lulu asked Olivia for advice about her marriage. Maxie helped Nina revamp her style for her new job. Wait to See: Elizabeth and Jason attend Thanksgiving dinner with the Quartermaines. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Victor was grateful that Nikki moved back home and that they were officially back together. Devon was shocked to find Hilary at the boathouse. Cane accused Joe of moving in on the newly single Lily. Billy and Phyllis joined forces to protect Jabot. Jack and Victoria were both suspicious of their newly formed alliance. Gwen was worried that the old Hilary would resurface and try to win Neil back. Sage leaned on Adam for support. An emotional Hilary told Devon that he was trying too hard and needed to back off. Adam and Nikki received some shocking information about Victor’s past.

Hello. My name is Toby and this is my sister Star. We are both available for adoption either by myself or together with my sister. We are both very energetic bundles of Áuff and fun. Seeing as we are both young we both love to do what all kittens do. Play with anything within reach, munch on toes under the blankets and play with our toys. But when we are tired we like a warm blanket or lap to sleep on. My sister and I would love to have a home with children and other animals as we love to play with both. If you are interested in meeting me please contact my friends on their Facebook page, or the website www.yorktongaar.com or email my friend carmenyasinski@sasktel.net

A year has slipped by and life goes on, but from my heart you’re never gone. I think about you always, I talk about you too, I have so many memories, but I wish I still had you. You will forever be in my heart until we meet again. —Love Mike & family

PRYCHAK - In loving memory of my dear sister Sonia Caroline, who passed away November 19, 2005. We cannot lose the ones we love For even when they are gone We feel their gentle presence In the hush of every dawn We see them in the sunlight That makes the day so bright In the flowers of the springtime And in the stars at night We cannot lose the ones we love For they will always stay In all that’s bright and beautiful Around us day by day. —Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by your sister Adeline

* On Dec. 2, 1859, in Charles Town, Virginia, abolitionist John Brown is executed on charges of treason, murder and insurrection. Brown became militant during the mid-1850s, when he fought pro-slavery settlers in the sharply divided Kansas Free State territory.

* On Dec. 6, 1917, a Belgian steamer and French freighter, both loaded with ammunition, explode in Canada’s Halifax Harbor, leveling part of the town and killing nearly 1,600 people and injuring some 8,000. The ships carried 8 million tons of TNT intended for use in World War I. * On Dec. 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy torpedobombers take off from Florida on a routine training mission over

the Atlantic Ocean. The squadron leader later reported that his compass had failed and his position was unknown, and a rescue aircraft was dispatched with a 13-man crew. No trace of the 27 crewmen or six aircraft was ever found. * On Dec. 4, 1956, the “Million Dollar Quartet” convenes at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, in an historic impromptu jam session. Present were Carl Perkins,

Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. A tape recorded that day was not discovered until 1981. * On Nov. 30, 1965, lawyer Ralph Nader publishes the muckraking book “Unsafe at Any Speed.” It became a bestseller and prompted the passage of seat-belt laws in 49 states (all but New Hampshire). * On Dec. 3, 1979, eleven people are killed in a stampede outside a Who

Recycle and decorate at the same time There’s no shortage of great ideas for decorating your home using salvaged or recycled objects. Here are three simple projects that are sure to add an original touch to your decor. Well-dressed cushions Do you have some fabric cushions that are faded or have outdated patterns or colours? Cover them with fabric from clothes you no longer wear, whether it’s because of a broken zipper, an unsightly tear or a small stain that’s impos-

sible to remove. What a great way to breathe new life into your cushions and clothes. A wok in the garden If you have an old, badly scratched wok, don’t throw it away whatever you do! In a few easy steps, you can turn it into a great planter. After painting it, line the bottom with dried moss. Place upon the moss some small stones for drainage and then fill the wok with soil. Now plant whatever you want; put it somewhere in your yard

and then sit back and listen to your visitors’ surprised comments.

wall in the entrance hall. You can use it for hanging coats, bags, scarves, umbrellas, etc. Door handles can also be used as curtain hooks. You have too much jewelry? Hang your necklaces and bracelets on some door handles attached to a wall.

Door handles Just changed your doorknobs and you’re wondering what to do with the old ones? Screw a few into a nice wooden plank and attach it to a

concert in Cincinnati when a crowd of generaladmission ticket-holders surged forward in an attempt to secure prime unreserved seats inside, known as festival seating. * On Dec. 1, 1990, 132 feet below the English

Did you know? To avoid collisions on snow-covered highways, you need to calculate the equivalent of six seconds of distance between your vehicle and the one in front. It’s a preventive measure that could save lives. Skidding on snowcovered roads is often caused by excessive speed or locked wheels from braking too quickly.

For safety’s sake, adjust your driving techniques during the winter months and go easy on the pedal. Braking is highly inadvisable when your vehicle aquaplanes or skids on a wet road surface. Driving experts recommend that you stay calm and steer into a rear-wheel skid to regain control.

That’s because the lame-stream media chooses to focus on the negatives, narrowly focusing on the fact that the city also happens to be the death place of former black resident Michael Brown. But let us give credit to Tim Wolfe for being both color blind and tone deaf. There were racially motivated incidents on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. Wolfe allegedly was a direct participant in one of the incidents. When he resigned, he said he did so out of “love” and he looked genuinely shocked at the level of concern. There was a kid STARVING himself to death on campus for eight days by that time, and the entire Missouri football team was about to surround the chancellor’s residence at Providence Point. How clueless was this guy? Who was his adviser? Rasputin? Did he pose for one last picture with his family in

the basement? Missouri is lucky in the fact that it has a solid governor in Jay Nixon. Nixon, who sent the tin soldiers into Ferguson to quell violence and unrest while napalming CNN’s Don Lemon -- a time-tested, fail-proof tactic that always leads to de-escalation and hugs all around in riot situations -- approved of Wolf’s resignation. Echoing the words of former United States President Richard Nixon, who once famously resigned office in order to “hasten the start of that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America,” Gov. Nixon (no relation to the former president) wrote that Wolf’s “resignation was a necessary step toward healing and reconciliation [in] Missouri” while outside, on campus, students literally were singing “We Shall Overcome.” The only thing missing was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Say what you will about Missouri, but make

When I ask most folks what they love about holiday dinners, the most common response is indulging in their favorite desserts. I love making holiday desserts, but several of my family members have diabetes. Here are a few tricks I’ve learned to create low-sugar and low-fat desserts like my recipe for pumpkin cheesecake that is both delicious and healthy. * Swap out sweeteners: If you substitute a sugar substitute like stevia for sugar or agave syrup for honey, you can reduce the calories in your desserts without impacting the recipe. When a recipe calls for brown sugar, substitute half of the amount for stevia or a sugar substitute. * Use less fat: The trick here is knowing what the magical minimum of fat is for the particular recipe you’re using. Keep in mind that when you take fat out, you often have to replace it with another moist ingredient (like fatfree sour cream, applesauce, light cream cheese or orange juice). Using a combination of whole eggs and egg whites is

another a simple way to reduce fat. * Downsize servings: Practice portion control when serving desserts, and use plating to trick the eye. Serve smaller pieces on a smaller plate, or serve desserts in small, clear parfait glasses with layers of lowfat whipping cream and fresh fruit. * Use flavorful substitutions: If a cake recipe calls for 1 cup of butter or margarine, you can usually use 1 cup of whipped butter (50 percent less calories) or 1/2 cup of butter and 1/2 cup of an ingredient that complements the flavors of your recipe, such as fat-free sour cream, lowfat buttermilk, orange juice, low-fat yogurt, applesauce or other fruit purees, strong coffee and light cream cheese. LOW-FAT PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE Nonstick cooking spray 8 sheets low-fat honey graham crackers 2/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar substitute or stevia 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted 12 ounces one-thirdless-fat cream cheese, at

room temperature 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 2/3 cup low-fat 2 percent Greek-style plain yogurt 2 large eggs, at room temperature 2 large egg whites, at room temperature 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin puree 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Low-fat whipped topping, optional

from cracking. Heat oven to 325 F. Coat a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Put the graham crackers and 1 tablespoon of the sugar substitute in bowl of a food processor and grind until fine. Add butter and 2 tablespoons water, and pulse until moistened. Press into the bottom of prepared pan. Bake until set and golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool completely. 3. Combine the cream cheese, brown sugar, the remaining 1/3 cup sugar substitute and salt in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy. Add yogurt, eggs and egg whites, reduce the mixer speed to low and continue to beat until blended. Add the pumpkin, flour, pumpkin pie spice and vanilla. Reduce mixer speed to low and beat until just combined. Stir with a spatula a few

times to make sure all the ingredients are incorporated and to release any air bubbles in the batter that could cause the cheesecake to crack. 4. Pour the batter over the crust and rap the pan against the countertop a few times to bring any trapped air bubbles to the surface. Place the cheesecake on the center rack in the oven. Bake until just set and the center wiggles slightly, 50 to 60 minutes. Turn the oven off and crack the door open. Let sit in the oven for 15 minutes, and then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Run a thin sharp knife between the cheesecake and the pan to release the sides. Cool completely, and then chill until cold, at least 4 hours or overnight. 5. Before serving, remove the cheesecake from the refrigerator and release the sides of the pan. Allow the cheesecake to come to room temperature, 30 to

asphalt. So, what is the best solution for the roads here? Some of us do have to deal with very icy roads, especially those of us in remote locales; there, studded tires are practical. Some motorists live in urban areas but regularly drive to remote places where roads are always covered with ice or hard snow. For them, the studded tire is also a real help. On the other hand, most motorists drive only in urban areas where roads are cleared right down to the asphalt or on major highways that are perfectly maintained by public road works. For them, studded tires are probably not the right solution. A good ice-prepared winter tire will likely do the job adequately. If you are thinking about studded tires, be sure to verify with

The old saying, “no pain, no gain, is not without its grains of truth. Moderate soreness in the muscles may indicate that time spent in the gym is working, but sharp pains may be indicative of injury. Workout soreness that persists can derail workout plans and may turn some people off from exercise. As the body becomes acclimated to certain exercises, soreness may be less prevalent, and there are ways for people to speed up their rates of recovery. Why do muscles get sore? Muscle soreness can occur a day or two after exercising. Doctors used to think it resulted from a buildup of lactic acid in muscles, but now they say that it is actually muscle damage that is taking place. Exercise that pushes the muscles affects the fibers in muscle tissue, especially specialized structures that hold the fibers together. When you exercise, you are breaking down or tearing muscle, and the

body produces swelling and soreness as part of the healing process. Warm up; cool down One way to prevent extreme soreness is to follow proper guidelines before and after a workout. Stretching and gradually building to your peak workout can help. This acclimates the body incrementally to the workout. Afterward, stretching and a cooldown period can help lengthen the muscles once more and ease any discomfort that might follow. Consume some post-workout protein Before retiring after a tough workout, consume a light, proteinrich snack. The protein will help the body repair muscles overnight. Extra protein at breakfast also can give muscles the necessary fuel to start rebuilding. Choose anti-inflammatory foods and beverages Consuming foods and beverages that are known to limit swelling may help your body recover. Such foods and beverages may include tart cherry juice, leafy greens, whole grains, fatty fish, and beets. Know your limits It’s good to push yourself every so often to improve fitness goals. However, overdoing it may mean extreme soreness, or worse, an injury that is difficult to recover from. Experts recommend exercising every other day to give muscles the chance to heal. If you choose to hit the gym daily, try to work different muscle groups each day. If you feel muscles twitching during workouts, reduce the weight.

Now Starz has joined the fun with “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” the new 10-episode series sequel to the 1981 cult favorite “The Evil Dead.” Starz is so confident that it renewed the series for a second season three days before its premiere. AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” which owes a great deal to “The Evil Dead,” has been renewed for season seven. But it doesn’t stop there. CBS, which produced the original “Star Trek,” with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, will launch the new “Star Trek” in January 2017. The premiere episode and all subsequent firstrun episodes will then be available exclusively in the U.S. on CBS’ All Access digital subscription service. Mark Wahlberg soon will be worth $6 billion. Following “Daddy’s Home” with Will Farrell (out Christmas Day) and “Deepwater Horizon” with Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, Kate Hudson and John Malkovich (dropping in September 2016), Wahlberg will be Steve Austin, “The Six Billion Dollar Man.” When the series came to TV in 1973, it was called “The Six Million Dollar Man,” with Lee Majors playing Austin, who became part of a topsecret government project after a near-fatal accident. With cutting-edge technology, he became the world’s first truly bionic man, with super-

Mark Wahlberg powers. Due to inflation, the bionics now cost a billion dollars. It starts shooting in September 2016 for a December 2017 opening, due no doubt to the special effects that need to be added. The new James Bond film “Spectre” recouped $80 million of its $300 million cost in its first week in the United Kingdom, followed by long lines and high attendance in the U.S. after its Nov. 6 opening. However, Bradley Cooper’s latest effort, “Burnt,” failed to ignite, taking in less than half of its $20 million cost. That’s a far cry from his last film, “American Sniper,” which cost $59 million and earned $547 million. The Robert Redford/ Cate Blanchett film “Truth” cost nearly $15 million to make and only took in $1.1 million. Also unemployed is “Jobs,” with Michael Fassbender, which cost $30 million and despite good reviews made only $14.7 million. Ashton Kutcher’s “Steve Jobs” film in 2013 cost $12 million and made $36 million. It all only proves that it pays to get to the “Job” site first!

Dogs and their unique relationship with weather Owning a dog is a big responsibility, but one that also provides a companion whose love is unconditional. Dog owners quickly learn their four-legged friends respond differently than humans to certain situations, including the changing weather. Many dog owners may notice that their pets seem particularly attuned to the weather. Changing weather can affect canines much like it does people, but dogs may also be affected in ways their owners are not. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dogs can feel changes in barometric pressure and even in the static electric field that occurs in the air. The American Animal Hospital Association says dogs’ behavioral changes may be attributable to changes in the weather. Dogs may become agitated or overexcited by dips in barometric pressure. As electrical storms approach, some dogs may get very anxious, even running and hiding if their anxiety is especially high. Many dogs are afraid of thunder and lightning and can sense approaching storms even when

they are still miles away. According to researchers at Penn State University, between 15 and 30 percent of all dogs are extremely scared of thunder and may experience a rapid increase of cortisol, a stress hormone. Dogs also can sniff out storms, detecting concentrations of chemicals common during some storms. Dogs can smell ozone in the air associated with lightning as well. Dogs may be physically affected by weather just like their owners are. Although there is little scientific work specifically on the affects of cold or damp weather on dogs that occurs during autumn and early winter, it does seem that canines feel the effects of these changes. Owners often notice more stiffness and lameness in pets during adverse weather conditions. Pain resulting from arthritis may increase and muscles may stiffen when the climate becomes cooler. Many animals are known to have an innate sense of changing weather or oncoming storms. Dogs can learn to anticipate meaning behind atmospheric changes that can alert others to upcoming weather.

Alzheimer’s researches hopeful Alzheimer’s disease has no cure, and its progression cannot be radically slowed. The Alzheimer’s Association reports that every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s, and around 5 million people in the country currently have the disease. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, researchers are continuing to work on both drug and nondrug treatments to combat both cognitive and behavioral symptoms. According to information from the 2015 Alzheimer’s Association I n t e r n a t i o n a l Conference, there is reason for optimism regarding Alzheimer’s treatments. Researchers now have a better understanding of how the brain changes with Alzheimer’s and can fine tune medications to react with certain areas of the brain responsible

for certain symptoms. For example, drug companies Eli Lilly and Biogen have been testing drugs that block beta amyloid, a protein that can cause toxic brain plaques in people, which are often associated with progressive brain disease. Another abnormality associated with Alzheimer’s is caused when a protein called tau twists into microscopic tangles, says the Mayo Clinic. Tangles collapse vital brain cell transport systems. Researchers are looking into medicines that may prevent tau from forming tangles. In addition, researchers continue to look at anti-inflammatory drugs to help delay the progress of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as how other conditions and diseases, including high blood pressure or diabetes, may impact the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

Indian cuisine no stranger to the versatility of beef Though it might surprise some people, many natives of India eat beef. Thanks to its versatility, ground meat is a popular form of red meat among people in India, where exporting beef is big business. But those who want to keep beef for their own dinner tables and enjoy a taste of India can accomplish both of these goals with the following recipe for “Keema Matar (Spiced Ground Beef With Peas)” from Suneeta Vaswani’s

“Easy Indian Cooking” (Robert Rose). KEEMA MATAR (Spiced Ground Beef With Peas) Serves 8 •2 tablespoons oil •2 pounds onions, chopped •2 pounds lean ground beef or lamb •1-1⁄2 tablespoons minced, peeled ginger root •1 tablespoon minced garlic •3 to 4 teaspoons chopped green chiles

•1 tablespoon coriander powder •1-1⁄2 teaspoon cumin powder •3⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper •3⁄4 teaspoon turmeric •1-1⁄2 teaspoon salt to taste •1 28-ounce can chopped tomatoes, including juice •1 10-ounce package frozen peas •1 teaspoon garam masala •1⁄3 cup cilantro, chopped

Continue to deglaze with water as necessary. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add coriander, cumin, cayenne pepper, turmeric, and salt. Mix well. Sauté, stirring continuously, for 3 to 4 minutes. Add tomatoes with juice and mix well. Cover and cook for 10 minutes. Add peas and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat and sprinkle with garam masala. Cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Stir

In a large saucepan, heat oil over mediumhigh heat. Sauté the onions until they begin to color, 10 to 12 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and sauté until dark brown, 25 to 30 minutes longer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking to pan. If necessary, deglaze periodically with 2 tablespoons of water. Add the ground beef, ginger, garlic, and chile. Brown well, stirring frequently, 15 to 20 minutes.

mixture. Garnish with cilantro just before serving. Note: Keema can be served over halved hamburger buns like a sloppy Joe, over rice or with any Indian bread. Some chefs like to make a big pot of keema and freeze it in small containers to use as an ingredient in other dishes, such as stuffed peppers. Do not cook more than 3 pounds of ground beef at a time, as it will be difficult to brown.
