Alternative energy and lifestyle changes A2
October 2, 2015 | This Week Marketplace
People have always wanted to have more time, more produce and more energy. To solve the problem of “How do I make this better?” people needed to create technology and wisdom to achieve the solution. It is in that question, that many of the wonderful technological innovations and lifestyles we use today were born. The information in this article is about alternative energy and lifestyle changes that can make great significant differences in your lifestyle, energy bills, home and wallet. Many people that I communicate with daily
have expressed growing concerns about energy dependence, living off grid, permaculture lifestyle, emergency preparedness, and how they can make informed decisions. They have a need for inexpensive (or not) solutions and consulting of which I have personally researched many, and helped implement several ideas for people over the years. From ceramic paint that you can coat your roof shingles to cut summertime energy consumption, generators and which ones are worth the investment, solar wall heating, what is a wood
want something. We want a nice house, and cannot imagine how families used to be bigger and live in such a small 3 bedroom home. Now if we could ask those people from back in the day, “Why didn’t you build a bigger house?” The answer is quite blunt, “Do you know how much wood you need to cut so you could heat it?” Nowadays a garden is often a nice hobby for someone who wants exercise and landscaping, and many cannot conceivably see the effort of growing food for a whole year. I am prone to agree that going to work to earn a few extra dollars and buy your pro-

Yet we have become removed from the old basic ways to take care of those needs, and I believe we can use all the help we can find. The direct way begin to address real needs and concerns is to ask whether we need something, or

The inaugural tournament at the recently installed disc golf course in Fort Qu’Appelle was held Sept. 27, with 25 participants, a full card, taking part in the ‘MVP Circuit’ event, with players each receiving three MVP discs as part of the entry fee. The players had to use those discs for the 18 played. It actually took more than 18 to determine a winner as Dan Ashton and Shane Zellweger, both of Regina were deadlocked with 62 on the par-58 course. The two would go to a three ‘hole’ playoff with Ashton emerging
duce in the nice air conditioned grocery store is much easier. Whereas some would say “I need food, but why would you buy your food, when you can grow it for free?” The technology and wisdom available to us today came from the hardship of problem solvers of many years gone by. The first question I ask anyone is, “Are you aware of what you need?” Often it is not just a technological solution, but a revelation as to why you should invest in solar panels or a new tractor and so on. We want new technology or wisdom to make life easier. Many of these great innovations we will be addressing were made to supply our needs. We

Garlic flavoured The Second Annual Hint of Garlic and Trade Show was held at the Kamsack Legion Hall recently. It was expanded from last year to include a small trade show. There was more than 200 visitors to the event. They were able to see and discuss with the vendors the many displays. There were different samples made with garlic which many enjoyed. This year we had eight tables which made it comfortable because there were many other conflicting events happening. There was a door prize where a person had to guess the number of garlic bulbil heads in a glass jar and the winner was Rodger Moore from Verigin. Overall this was a very successful event and a tentative date of Sept. 11 has been set for next year. Submitted Photos
Telemiracle to hold auditions
Kinsmen Telemiracle is looking for Saskatchewan singers, dancers, bands, and entertainers to audition for a chance to perform on Telemiracle 40 to be held March 5 and 6, 2016 in Regina, and broadcast live on CTV. “Audition weekend is such an exciting time for us. We continue to be impressed every year at the incredible talent from across the province.” says Jody Diakow, the
Kinsmen Foundation’s Executive Director. “Between Saskatoon and Regina, our producers watch over 200 performances on the Audition weekend. They always have a tough job to narrow that down to around 50 that will ultimately be on the show.” While talent is one part of the criteria, a passion for Telemiracle, the desire to help others, and a geographic balance among performers are
other factors involved in the selection of entertainers that will be on the show. Producer Ian Roach says, “Telemiracle is a coming together of the Saskatchewan community to raise funds for people with special needs. This year, Telemiracle 40 represents a milestone for the telethon. Our Saskatchewan performers have always been a significant part of the show and we look to
celebrate this anniversary in every corner of the province.” Anyone interested in auditioning for Telemiracle must apply to the Kinsmen Telemiracle office to be registered. Auditions will be held on November 7 in Regina and November 8 in Saskatoon. Please call (306) 2446400, extension 2, to register.

Choosing Canola Varieties for 2016 The year was 1976, and we were in the process of harvesting the massive WESTSTAR rapeseed field across the road from the farm. I remember it well as I was the one swathing with the new Versatile 24’ swath header mounted on a bi-directional tractor. You know the one, manufacturers only changed the width of the table; the discharge hole remained the same size. My father would come by to check on progress, and impart wisdom as that was his job. He told me it was alright to spend an extra day to cut the quarter. Myself being the impatient teenager, it was my job to ignore the wisdom. However, he did mount the pitch fork on the machine so that I could get out of the cab to straighten up the swaths. He had his ways! Waiting for the crop to dry down and finally get into it with the combine was no different back then as it is today. The anticipation of yield is the only focus at this time of year. Back in 1976 it took three days of combining to determine the yield off the quarter. I recall shovelling the last load into our grain elevator up under the rafters with my father. There wasn’t much time for discussion as we were frantically pushing the rapeseed down into the corners of the bin, my younger brother downstairs knew how to load the leg. My quick calculation determined, I suggested that we were well north of 50 bu/ac. In between frantic breaths to keep up with junior downstairs, my father said, “And don’t tell anyone.” That would have confirmed my arithmetic, and I knew the variety he would plant next year. Today the yield information is fast, right on the yield monitor and decisions on canola hybrids for next year are made quickly. The canola industry has made advances in plant breeding, making yield more consistent with herbicide traits, disease resistance and seed treatment packages. At Parrish & Heimbecker, we sell canola seed with the latest seed technology for your fields. Realizing that fields are different as are your agronomy expectations, we handle varieties from several companies to meet those needs. The goal is to minimize the genetic risk. Our suggestion is to use perhaps three different varieties from two competing companies on your farm. You will choose one that performs well; the one you rely on, and we suggest adding a new variety with better disease resistance and complimentary agronomic trait. This year at Parrish & Heimbecker in Yorkton and Swan River, we are making it easier for you to get more money on your canola seed purchase. We have a special offer on our Canola Rewards, empowering you to count your wheat contracted tonnage towards the grain contracting component of the Canola Rewards Program. Come and see us, we’ll show you how it works. Parrish & Heimbecker, moving tradition forward.

Learning the game Earlier this summer a tonal disc golf course was designed and installed in Lemberg. Recently course designers Calvin Daniels and Trevor Lyons were back in the town to provide a basic clinic on how to play disc golf for students of North Valley High School in Lemberg. Students from Grades 10, 11 and 12 spent time on the course getting
a feel for throwing golf discs, and learning the basic rules to the sport, and the course located at the sports grounds. The course is open for play to anyone stopping in for nine. Events at the Lemberg course, as well as other courses in the region can be followed by joining ‘Disc Golf Courses of the Parkland’ on Facebook.com

Animal Health Week OCTOBER 4 - 10, 2015
How to choose the best food for your pet Pet owners always want to offer the very best to their furry little friends when it comes to care and food. That’s why many people have lots of questions about their pets’ diets. Is it true that you should never give cow’s milk to cats? Is it dangerous to give table scraps to a dog? Unfortunately, many wellmeaning but misinformed pet owners harm their pets by giving them inappropriate foods. Your veterinarian can advise you Veterinarians usually rec-
ommend food that is manufactured by animal nutrition specialists. You can find these products in veterinary hospitals and clinics as well as in specialty stores. Unlike the widely advertised brands sold in supermarkets, this high quality food takes into account all the nutritional needs of pets. Moreover, your veterinarian may recommend a particular brand that is tailored to your pet’s specific health problem, such as obesity, dental or urinary disorders. Of course, these specialized
foods usually cost a bit more, but their benefits are worth the extra expense. Because they increase the life expectancy of your pet by reducing the risk of disease, you avoid paying for expensive treatments in the long term. On the other hand, cheaper brands contain lower quality ingredients that can cause unpleasant digestive problems such as vomiting, diarrhea or skin problems. Talk to your veterinarian about your pet’s diet so you can ensure his or her optimal health.
Quality food may help extend your pet’s life expectancy.
Reptiles need to go to the vet’s too Increasing numbers of people in search of the perfect pet are setting their sights on reptiles, with turtles, lizards and snakes replacing more
conventional animals in many households. In fact, in hospitals and veterinary clinics, it’s no longer unusual to see an iguana waiting for its annual
checkup alongside dogs and cats. People adopt reptiles as pets for various reasons: • They don’t need a
The ins and outs of declawing your cat Feline declawing (or onychectomy) is a surgical procedure that involves removing all or part of the distal phalanges of a cat’s toes, i.e. the end bones where the claws are located. This procedure is carried out most frequently in North America, where nearly 25 per cent of domestic cats are declawed. Declawing is usually done to prevent damage to furniture or curtains. Other people opt for the procedure to keep young children from being scratched. At what age should you have your cat declawed? The younger and lighter the cat, the less pain there will be from the declawing. Similarly, healing takes place much more quickly than in an adult cat. Veterinarians usually recommend declawing cats at around three or four months of age, when a general anesthesia is considered safe. Many vets suggest having your cat neutered or spayed at the same time. Veterinarians use various means to reduce the pain associated with a declawing procedure, including local anesthe-
tics, analgesics, anti-inflammatories and pain-relief patches. Cats usually recover very well when this surgery is performed by a veterinarian. However, be wary if you’re offered a declawing at a surprisingly low price. Your pet could suffer if this surgical procedure isn’t done Cats recuperate much faster if properly by a they are declawed around the qualified person. age of three or four months.

lot of room, which makes them an ideal choice for small homes • They don’t make bothersome noises that could annoy roommates or neighbours • They don’t have fur or feathers, which is perfect for people who have allergies Moreover, despite the aloof reputation of these cold-blooded companions, some species of reptiles like contact with human beings and seek their body warmth. Others love to be stroked and petted. A few recommendations Many veterinarians think reptiles make great pets. However, it’s always advisable to be fully informed before buying any type of exotic animal. Be sure to ask how big your future pet will be when it reaches
maturity. Find out what sort of cage you’ll need, what to expect in terms of behaviour, and what kind of care it’ll need. Avoid large reptiles that will outgrow your ability to care for them and that will end up costing a small fortune in food. It is always wise to verify your community’s regulations
when it comes to owning exotic animals. As a preventive measure, veterinarians recommend you have your reptiles examined immediately after purchase. Your veterinarian can also give you lots of tips to help your pet live a long, healthy life in the best possible conditions.

Woods that blend with any decor
Wood is a highly versatile material that can be used in building or for beautifying all types of homes. Nature has given us an almost infinite variety of tree species to work with. Indeed, more than 65,000 species have been identified around the world. Here are some of the kinds of wood most commonly used in construction and renovation projects.
grower that reaches up to 90 metres high and can have a diameter of 2.5 metres. White pine is a superior quality wood that’s appreciated in cabinetmaking and carpentry.
Oak A symbol of longevity, the majestic oak can easily live for over 500 years in the wild. Under ideal conditions, it can survive for almost 1,000 years. Oak trees produce a wood that is easy to cut and that rarely cracks. In addition, it is heavy and shock resistant. Thanks to these qualities, oak is often used for flooring, structural frames and stairs.
3) Jack pine is a common conifer whose knots give a nice appearance to planks. It is often used for panelling and siding.
A TRIO OF PINES 1) White pine is a fast
2) Red pine is named for the colour of its bark, which ranges from red to pink. Stronger than white pine, it is often used to make wide-plank flooring and utility poles.
MAPLE Did you know that according to legend, the famous Trojan horse was built of maple? Maple is a species found around the world. Its wood is divided into two categories: hardwood and soft wood. Hard maple wood is heavy and valued for its sturdiness. Soft maple wood, on the other hand,
is used for purposes that require less strength. POPULAR TYPES OF WOOD In the field of interior decoration, rare or precious woods are in big demand at the moment. For a unique look, designers love the sublime beauty of ebony, mahogany, sandalwood, pink ivory, zebrawood, amaranth and olive. These exotic woods are more expensive than the common kinds, but their rich colours and fine grain are well worth the price. Bamboo is an affordable, elegant alternative and it is also an eco-friendly choice. Reclaimed barn wood and driftwood are also experiencing their hour of glory. Sometimes grey,
sometimes bleached, these relics are like treasure to those who know how to breathe new life into them. DECORATING WITH WOOD: DON’T OVERDO IT! Whatever the type, wood immediately adds warmth to a home’s atmosphere. However, unless you want to create a country cottage atmosphere, be sure not to overdo it. In other words, don’t go crazy by mixing several different types and colours. Use a harmonious blend of woods and stains to create a coherent decor for living the good life. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call in a professional decorator.

Stripping wood safely Removing several layers of paint from wood furniture is a job that antique and cabinetwork enthusiasts usually love to tackle. If you want to display the original grain of some antique wood furniture or stain it a different colour, read these safety tips carefully. Before you start stripping the wood, remember that wood stripping products are highly toxic and can be dangerous to your health. Take the time to carefully read
all the instructions of your chosen stripping product. Unfortunately, many people neglect this essential step, either because of impatience or overconfidence. Follow safety instructions to the letter. • Where possible, work outside. • If you must work indoors, try to prevent vapours from spreading and ventilate your workspace. • Protect yourself
properly by wearing a mask, safety glasses, gloves and protective clothing. • Ensure your children or pets don’t have access to your workplace. If you have trouble breathing, or if you experience dizziness, nausea or a headache while stripping furniture, go outside and breathe some fresh air as quickly as possible. Ideally, you should leave your workplace to go breathe fresh air every ten minutes.

The timeless elegance of stone A12
October 2, 2015 | This Week Marketplace
For thousands of years, natural stone has been used in building projects. Elegant and timeless, it inspires artists, architects and writers from all backgrounds. In fact, the Spanish poet Federico Lorca wrote that “stone is a shoulder on which to bear Time.” Would you like to integrate stone into your next renovation project? Even though there is a wide choice of natural stone, some kinds have been proven over time for embellishing homes — these days we see it in kitchen countertops, fireplaces, stairs, walls, patios and as exterior siding.
GRANITE AND BASALT Basalt is the most abundant volcanic rock, in terms of volume, on Earth’s surface. It is resistant to water and corrosion and is used in all phases of architectural construction, from flooring to siding. It is truly an all-purpose stone. Granite, which is strong and durable, is ideal for countertops and floors.
MARBLE AND SLATE Renowned for its use by world-famous sculptors, marble can also be used for more practical ends such as floors and countertops. Slate, on the other hand, is a grained
stone used for memorial stones and decorative surfaces. In construction, slate is also very practical as roofing material. Because of its strength and its unique layered structure, masons can separate it into thin sheets.
LIMESTONE AND SANDSTONE Limestone is a very pale stone used in building and sculpting, while sandstone is characterized by extreme hardness and has excellent resistance to chemical or climatic stress. Sandstone is used in construction, sculpture, the manufacture of grinding wheels
and paving stones. STONE IS SYNONYMOUS WITH PRESTIGE Stone adds elegance, simplicity and warmth to any room. Put simply, you just can’t go wrong when choosing granite for your bathroom, slate for a work surface or marble for a countertop. While synonymous with wealth
and luxury, stone also brings a natural ambiance into stately homes. Just a touch here and there is all that’s needed to instantly give an upmarket look to your residence. KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE When the time comes to purchase natural stone
for your home, take the time to learn about its proper installation and maintenance. In-store specialists at home renovation stores can suggest which products you need (grout, sealer, cleaner, trowel, etc.) and the best techniques to use. You could always entrust the task to a professional if you don’t like the idea of turning yourself into a tiler or mason for a day. Sometimes urban and contemporary, sometimes rustic and bucolic, stone is always unique. It has no equal when it comes to beautifying a home, and you will surely impress your neighbours with your exquisite taste.
Tackling your home’s stubborn stains and odors (NC) — From wall stains to washing machines, indoor stains and smells can be a challenge to tackle. Luckily, there are surprisingly simple methods to erase them for good. Here are a few tips to freshen up the most stubborn spots in your home. Conceal wall stains with primer Have your kids made artwork of your walls, or has your leaky roof caused a water-damaged mess? Tough wall stains like these can be hard to get rid of, but are easily sealed by applying a high-quality, stain-blocking primer. For example, KILZ Hide-All Primer Sealer covers problem areas on surfaces from drywall and woodwork to concrete and brick. It even masks over dark stains without allowing color to bleed through. With only a one-hour drying time before applying a topcoat, this is the perfect one-weekend project to cross off your list. KILZ primer can also seal off odors caused by pets or smoke. Eliminate refrigerator odors Refrigerators are subject to a variety of spills and odors. Making time for fridge maintenance can help prevent unusual odors and keep your food
fresh longer. To cleanse and polish your fridge, begin by emptying the contents of your fridge and throwing out, recycling or composting any food that is expired or beginning to smell. Next, pull out any removable drawers or shelving and place them in the sink. Using a damp, soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge, wipe down these pieces, the interior of your fridge and the door with a multi-purpose cleaner. Or, mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one quart of hot water for a natural soap alternative. Don’t forget the seams of the shelves and rubber door seal. If your fridge requires an extra-deep cleaning, unplug it while you work to avoid wasting energy. Before putting all of your food back into the fridge,
wipe down the exterior of each jar or container with a damp cloth. Repeat this process every two or three months for the best results. Make grout lines shine Tile surfaces are prone to dirt and debris, especially in bathrooms or high-traffic areas. To keep tile looking fresh and new, grab an old toothbrush or electric toothbrush for a deeper scrub. Before you start, wash the surface with water then mix two parts baking soda with one part water. Scrub the resulting paste into the cracks and crevices, then douse with water again. If the grout lines are stained, spray a mixture of equal parts vinegar and warm water onto the area and brush. After a final rinse, the grime will be gone. Prevent a moldy washing
machine If you own a front-loading washing machine, you’ve probably noticed the unpleasant smell that can linger after completing a load of laundry. Despite being more energy-efficient, these machines have a tendency to hold odors and harbor mold. To clean and prevent grimy buildup, try this: instead of detergent, cycle two cups of vinegar and a quartercup of baking soda on a hot setting. When it’s done, use a clean sponge to scrub down the inside.
Finally, rinse with a plain-water cycle, and you’ll see (and smell) the results. Whether in the kitchen, bathroom or laundry
room, tricky stains and odors in your home can be a tough job, but with these four tips you’ll be able to eliminate a few messy tasks in no time.

The sheer bliss of a central vacuum This Week Marketplace | October 2, 2015
Let’s be honest; vacuuming is a chore that many of us avoid doing until the dust and dirt are just too hard to ignore. To simplify this dreaded task, you might want to think about ditching your traditional canister or upright vacuum cleaner for a “central vac” system. How they work A central vacuum system includes a power unit and dust reservoir, a network of ducts, wall outlets and various acces-
sories. When the vacuuming can’t be put off any longer, you simply plug a flexible hose, equipped with a handle on one end and a brush on the other, into one of the outlets. Then with a quick flick of a switch the power unit starts up and you can move from room to room with only the hose to pull along behind you. You: 1. Dust: 0. Characteristics Central vacuums are easy to install and are
more powerful and much quieter than portable vacuum cleaners. Moreover, this type of system is much less cumbersome than a traditional vacuum cleaner — those things bump continuously against furniture and door frames, not to mention they have power cords that are never long enough. Installation Call in a professional if you decide to install a central vacuum system in your home. This spe-
Underfloor heating is the ultimate in comfort
In Canada, we all know that it’s no fun having to walk barefoot on a cold floor during your nightly trip to the bathroom. If you dream of being able to walk around your home without having to bother putting on a big pair of slippers, why not have underfloor heating installed? Guaranteed comfort Underfloor heating usually works with an electric radiant system. This type of heating has several advantages in terms of comfort and energy savings. When a room is heated with an underfloor system, the
ambient temperature is the same from floor to ceiling. In addition, all the heat doesn’t escape when you open the door of the room. Floorings For maximum efficiency, choose ceramic tiling or natural stone. These are ideal for storing and redistributing heat. That said, the compatibility of other floorings varies depending on what type it is. So before installing underfloor heating, check with the retailer to make sure the flooring you’re considering will perform efficiently. Also, keep
in mind that the job of connecting the heating system to your electrical circuit should be done by an electrician. Here are just a few of the benefits of underfloor heating: • The system is completely invisible. • It doesn’t require any form of maintenance. • It’s silent and doesn’t vibrate. • It doesn’t spread dust or germs. • It doesn’t dry the air the way other systems do. • It uses up to 25 per cent less energy than regular electric baseboards.

cialist will make holes in your walls in order to install sockets and piping on each floor. The power unit is typically placed in the basement, well away from the living areas of your home. Costs Central vacuum cleaners usually come with a price tag of between $500 and $1,500, depending on the brand, model, power and quality of the components and accessories. One last advantage to think about is that a central vacuum cleaner is considered an asset when selling your home.
Get rid of dirt hassle-free with a central vacuum cleaner.

Add intrigue with colour (NC) — Looking to add dimension and style to your space? It’s as easy as adding an accent wall. This is a quick way to add depth and intrigue to any room, especially if there’s a vibrant colour you love, but feel it’s too much for an entire space. There are a few basic guidelines to follow when choosing accent wall colours that will ensure your space feels cohesive. When creating an accent wall, the key is to choose a colour that will complement the existing adjacent walls. If the room is already a neutral, use a bold choice in the area you want to highlight, such as behind a bed or sofa. You can also combine
opposite colours, such as a cool blue or violet with a warm orange or yellow. Similar colours such as blue and green also work well together. Another good place to start when it comes to picking a hue is to try one you love. Say you’ve been a fan of red but are unsure of how to use it, consider its many tones and shades such as a warm maroon, pale pink,
Special paints
Paint retailers have a wildly diverse array of choice when it comes time to pick out a tone or texture for your home decorating project. Here are three new types of paint to tempt you. WATER REPELLENT PAINT With the so-called “lotus effect,” water slides over the surface of this paint, washing away any dirt. This phenomenon means that water repellent paint could be called self-cleaning. Not surprisingly, it makes a lot of sense to use this paint primarily in rooms with high humidity or that need cleaning on a regular basis, such as bathrooms or kitchens. This versatile and highly durable product can also be used outdoors. CHALKBOARD PAINT Applying chalkboard paint lets you transform any object or surface into a blackboard. With some chalk and a section of wall covered with chalkboard paint, you can draw pictures, post your to-do lists and a weekly menu, create a play area for the children or draw up a family calendar that can be easily changed every month. Note that it doesn’t have to be a blackboard; this kind of paint comes in a wide variety of colours. MAGNETIC PAINT This unique paint is filled with ferrous particles, allowing you to transform all types of surfaces into magnetic boards. After applying the magnetic paint, you can overlay other colours, wallpaper and even chalkboard paint. Then you can use magnets to attach notes, drawings, photos and maybe even some sweet, romantic messages.

rich burgundy and vibrant crimson. With an endless range of colours available, it’s easy to work an accent wall into your current palette. If you want to create a more unified look, use your accent more than once. Try incorporating textiles, art, rugs, pillows and other home accessories of the same colour into the space as well. Creating an accent wall can be a quick and easy project that will do wonders for the look and feel of your space.

Space saving solutions for small kitchens This Week Marketplace | October 2, 2015
(NC) — For many Canadian families the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s a place where everyone comes together after a busy day to cook, eat delicious food and bond. However, for many homeowners and city dwellers too many cooks in the kitchen can be an issue for those with limited counter space and small prep areas. This is why making the most of every square inch is crucial. The experts at Blanco, world leader in kitchen technology, have some advice on how to make the best of any small kitchen without sacrificing function or style:
Choose multipurpose products For homeowners who don’t have the luxury of a widespread counter, products that do double duty can be a smart way to save space and increase efficiency in your kitchen. Blanco’s Precis W/ Drainboard Silgranit sink includes a grid tray and offers an optional cutting board that slides over the sink or drainer board allowing for a distinctly functional work space. The grid tray acts as a multifunctional sink accessory that can hold hot pots, pans and dishes not only on the sink surface but also on the kitchen counter, and can
even double as a trivet on a dining table. The Blanco Precis collection is made of Blanco Silgranit – Canada’s leading coloured sink material that offers exceptional strength, durability and innovative designs. Think about smart installation Products that combine style and function-
ality are the ultimate way to make smart use of your kitchen. With its crisp angular design, durable uniquely shaped work surface, and integrated stainless steel grid, the Blanco Precis W/Drainboard sink offers the perfect way to free up space on your counter and capitalize on every possible inch. It also

What’s trending in home decor (NC) — Here’s a look at some key trends being seen in homes across Canada, according to Karl Lohnes, a home interior and product design authority. Colour: Rooms will feel comforting and intimate with charcoal and butterscotch, two great neutrals. Bring them into your home from the floor to the ceiling and don’t forget the windows. Bone is also the new white. The new hue helps to warm up the ever-popular greys and blues. P a t t e r n / Te x t u r e s : Natural, unembellished fabrics and furnishings are becoming increasingly popular. On the pattern front, plaid fabrics will replace summery gingham checks in fabrics and wallpaper. Furniture: Modern furniture shapes are still popular, but have a soft or round edge; reminiscent of Scandinavian styles from the 1970s and 1980s. At the Window: Heavy draperies that block views and natural light sources are being replaced by pared-down window treatments that let in light without looking dated. The Connected Home: Technology has become an expected feature in any new home and existing homeowners are also loving the wirefree aesthetic (and safe-

features a compact, practical, single-bowl design that is suitable for small kitchens. It can be installed as a topmount or as an undermount so you have the option to conceal the edges of the sink and achieve an attractive minimalist look that’s easy to clean − the ideal way to reclaim important workspace on your countertops. Don’t sacrifice style The biggest misconception that people have when renovating a small space is thinking that they can’t incorporate style. In fact, just the opposite is true. Colour can be the ultimate way to add individuality by making either a bold or subtle statement. The Blanco Precis W/

Drainboard sink is available in six Silgranit finishes, such as anthracite, cinder, café, truffle, white and the latest trendy colour, metallic gray, to suit any décor personality. Furthermore, Blanco Silgranit sinks can be colour- matched with selected Blanco faucets for a unified look in the kitchen. Contain Clutter One of the greatest culprits in the kitchen for taking up space is the clutter that builds up on work surfaces. Try trendy organizational space savers like mesh baskets, colanders or trays to group things together but keep them out of the way while you’re working. They can even act as a decorative approach to help your kitchen function better, like having a soap dispenser matching your faucet or magnetic sink caddy for storing sponges. Family and friends of the late Bob Wassill want to thank all who were a part of Bob’s life’s journey over the past number of years. Thank you to the staff at Melody Manor at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home, the staff at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, the professionals at Bailey’s Funeral Home, Father Mitch at St. Henry’s Church in Melville and all who visited with Bob over the past while. Thank you to all who attend either the prayer service or funeral mass, those who generously donated to the various charities and to the St. Henry’s CWL Ladies for the time of fellowship after the funeral. So many people to thank, that it is impossible to remember everyone. Thanks to those who may have been missed. Your kindness will never be forgotten. RIP Uncle Bob.

On a recent afternoon when my son texted me to check in, I nimbly replied with sticky fingers, “I’m preoccupied with taking pics of pints of pickled ....” While laughing at the preponderance of P’s, I accidentally pressed “send.” He immediately wrote back, “Pickled PEPPERS? ... ha!” Hmm, OK, so I may have left the peppers out of this recipe, but keeping with the “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled ...” verse that took us back to his childhood, I simply replied, “perhaps.” Word play and food play are interchangeable with kids, no matter their age. Preparing pickled veggies this time of year is the perfect antidote for using and enjoying the abundance of fresh, tender and tasty produce in our gardens and markets. You and your kids can create jars full to stack in the refrigerator in less than an hour for a month of tasty sides. Discover, like my family, that the vegetables will be sweet like bread and butter pickles, but will pack more flavor than the traditional grocerystore fare. Here’s how to “pickle it” all: 24-HOUR PICKLES For the brine:
For the vegetables: •3 cucumbers, sliced in discs or quartered lengthwise •6 medium carrots, peeled and quartered lengthwise •2 big handfuls of green beans •1 medium cauliflower, broken into pieces •2 onions, halved and sliced In a saucepan, combine the first six brine ingredients and bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is completely dissolved. Place the vegetables in a large bowl. An adult should pour the hot brine mixture over the vegetables. Cool. Transfer equally to six clean jars, tucking a bay leaf and dill (if you choose) in each one. Screw lids on tightly and place in the refrigerator. Refrigerate for 24 hours before serving. Makes 6 pints. TIP: Keep refrigerated and use within one month.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you write about the effect that angina, stopped quickly by nitro, has on one’s system? My husband takes Imdur (30 mg) twice a day to control angina, although he still experiences it several times a week, necessitating a nitroglycerin pill. Sometimes angina comes from exertion, such as climbing stairs a few times or doing homemaintenance chores. He is 89 and in relatively good health. He has had
bypass surgery and several catheterizations, with eight stents. He doesn’t need a cane or use oxygen. His cardiologist suggested EECP, which my husband does not want to endure, believing the medicines are working fine. His quality of life is good — angina does not interfere with going out and enjoying himself. Is he taking angina too lightly because he can stop it by popping a nitro? — M.W. ANSWER: Angina pectoris literally means “chest pain,” but in my experience people with angina due to blockages in the arteries of the heart are more likely to complain of pressure or tightness than actual pain. Angina occurs when the heart’s demand for blood oxygen exceeds the supply. This usually means during exercise. If the blood supply is fixed due to a blockage in the heart, the heart simply can’t get enough oxygen above a certain level of
• “We are moving out of our apartment, as we finally found a home to purchase. With all the new projects, we’re going to need our deposit back, so we want to leave the old place in tip-top shape. Here’s a trick we learned: Tiny nail holes in drywall are instantly patched by rubbing a bar of soap across the surface.” — S.G. in Arkansas • Now is the time to have your heating systems checked if you have not done so already. And before you start a fire in your fireplace, make sure you have your fireplace inspected for cracks in the mortar joints. Very small cracks can start a fire in your home, as the flames can be sucked through the gaps. While you’re at it, spring to have any creosote buildup cleaned out. Be safe AND warm this season! • “Before I pluck my eyebrows, I rub on a bit of my granddaughter’s teething gel. She’s done teething and doesn’t need it anymore, but it works well for me. Be very careful when applying, though; let dry and wash your hands before touching your eye any further!” — M.L. in California

exercise. If the person with angina stops exercising, the demand for oxygen goes back down below what can be supplied, and the angina goes away. Stable angina is associated with a low risk for heart attack. Medications like isosorbide (Imdur) and nitroglycerine work by dilating the blood vessels in order to increase supply. These medicines also dilate veins, which reduces the demands on the heart. Stents are designed to keep blockages open. Nonetheless, there are many people who continue to have angina despite what can be done with medicine and stents. EECP (enhanced external counterpulsation) is a new technique. Cuffs wrapped around the legs are synchronized with the EKG and squeeze strongly when the heart is at rest. This forces blood backward through the arteries and into the blood vessels of the heart. It may work by
making some blood vessels larger, but the exact mechanism isn’t clear. EECP is used for people with stable angina. It takes 35 hours of EECP over four to seven weeks to get benefits, and about 70 percent of people had improvement from severe angina to mild or none. EECP is a big investment of time, and is usually reserved for people whose angina is more disabling than your husband’s. At 89, your husband
certainly is entitled to say he is doing fine the way he is and not wanting further treatments. Coronary artery disease can go unnoticed until you have a heart attack. The booklet on the disease explains its causes, symptoms (such as angina) and treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 101W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A workplace change doesn’t seem to have turned out quite as you’d hoped. Never mind: Just treat yourself to a healthy dollop of that Aries self-confidence, and you’ll soon view things differently. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some of the support you might have hoped for in a difficult situation might not be there. But you have the strength to rely on your

Hello ladies, my name is Rocky. I am just over a year old and also happen to be a very handsome Shepherd Mix. I was neutered on July 22 and received my vaccinations. I am a very smart, playful and loving dog. I seem to be a bit nervous of other dogs right now as they scare me a bit (but shh don’t tell the girls that), but with some training I may grow to like them. As for cats, well, what are those? My favorite thing to do is to play with my human foster brother and sister, go for walks, eat a lot of treats, go for car rides and of course I love to give hugs and I am pretty gentle about that. Nap times are my favorite as I do need my beauty sleep. If you are interested in adopting this handsome boy, please contact Guardian Angel Animal Rescue on our Facebook page, website yorktongaar.com or email carmenyasinski@sasktel.net.
