THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Steffy begged Caroline to never tell Ridge about what really happened the night that Aly died. An unexpected announcement at Forrester Creations didn’t go over well with the staff. Steffy questioned Thomas’s unusual behavior and sudden change of heart toward Ridge and Caroline’s relationship. Due to Ridge’s recent declaration, Brooke pushed him to confess to Caroline about what he did while living in France. Caroline voiced a previous concern she once had about Thomas. Ivy was excited and a bit nervous as she prepared for her very first photo shoot as the new face of Forrester Creations. Steffy flexed her power as president of the com-

to at least pose a few questions and thoughts. What does living off grid look like, and is it possible/ expensive to achieve? Living off grid is pictured usually two ways. One would look very much like the picture described above. A beautiful cabin in the woods or lake front property, a roaring fire, a nice raised bed garden, solar panels on the roof keeping you in fat cheques from the power company while powering your favorite items such as TV, internet router, computer, coffee maker, washer dryer and dishwasher, and even your car is plugged in. The other off grid vision looks like the old black and white photos that you know they were taken 100 years ago by sitting still for 20 minutes for the film to get exposure – like the Amish people live today, or better yet how your great grand parents lived. The second type

sounds rough and difficult and raw life on the land. The technologically advanced “off-grid” sounds fun and sophisticated and easy. The beautiful cabin scenario in truth would still be challenging and somewhat possible, but very expensive to achieve in entirety. The “Amish” scenario can be achieved with very little money but a lot of hard work on a piece of land that probably no one wants. The pursuit of living off the grid is about peace and survival and the dream of escaping the normal day to day grind. Every week I talk to dozens of people hoping to achieve a balance of energy independence and survival preparedness mixed with peaceful, simple living. Next week we will begin exploring what essential things you will need to have and what kind of technology would make it a lot easier. For more info, check out our Facebook page at PROBLEM SOLVED – ALTERNATIVE or email me at service@

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay I have hardly met anyone who doesn’t dream of living in a cabin in the woods and living “off-grid”. The thought of being free from the noise of the city, foraging and living off the land, no more utility bills, and a nice leisurely spot to watch the rest of the world go by. Where did such an audacious thought come from? Unless you grew up in a family that had no running water or power, or perhaps you are much older and remember the days on the family farm – why would you desire such a strange lifestyle? The answer is simple – you want to. The problem is – do you need to? Today we explore whether or not it’s possible to live truly off the grid. While this is not really an easy subject to cover in just one article, I would like

Regional Park credits volunteers Volunteers helped make Carlton Trail Regional Park a great place to be this summer! The Park would not be all that it is without the countless hours that volunteers have contributed over the years. We would especially like to thank at this time all those people who gave their talents and time in 2015. Sometimes, the jobs that just get done do not get much recognition, but they are noticed and appreciated! A huge thank you to the Hruska’s for their work on the dam on From Lake and for the incredible dredging of the swim-

ming lake in midsummer! It was a truly amazing amount of work done in a short time. Thank you to Bernie Micholas and Don Salkeld for the use of their equipment and the many, many hours of time they contributed to the lake, too. The Board of Carlton Trail Park puts in a fantastic effort and amount of time on the administration of the park. Led by the amazing Maureen Fletcher as Chairperson, they always get the job done. With Maureen comes her partner, the indefatigable landscape artist Gil Grey, without whose able work Carlton

Trail would not look nearly as pretty. We also have to thank the staff. These are a great group of people who are generous with their talents and time, cheerfully carrying on through variable shifts, odd schedules and some truly challenging weather conditions to produce excellent results for Carlton Park. We are grateful to everyone who has been part of the Carlton Trail community and who have contributed so much this year! Tim Raine, who is our able Park Manager, supervises all the details of the work at Carlton

Park. All the improvements to the park have improved the golf course also. Last fall, Young’s Plant World donated many trees to beautify the park. Thanks to all the volunteers who planted, watered and cared for the trees this year and who came into the Club House for a lovely turkey supper donated by Diane Mitscke. Christmas in July, Boo in the Park in August and Flea Market in August & September were all organized by three young women employees, thanks go to Carrie Nichalauson, Susan

Harvest ahead of normal Forty per cent of the 2015 crop is now in the bin and an additional 33 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according the Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. The fiveyear (2010-2014) average for this time of year is 25 per cent combined. Regionally, producers in the southwest are furthest advanced, having 61 per cent of the crop combined. Producers in the southeast have 59 per cent combined. Thirty-

three per cent of the crop is combined in the west-central region; 22 per cent in both the eastcentral and northwestern regions, and 20 per cent in the northeast. Heavy rain over the weekend has delayed producers in many parts of the province. Warm and dry weather will be needed to help fields dry. Rainfall ranged from small amounts to over four inches in some southeastern areas. Provincially, topsoil

moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 16 per cent surplus, 76 per cent adequate, seven per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture conditions are rated as six per cent surplus, 80 per cent adequate, 12 per cent short and two per cent very short. Strong winds and heavy rain have lodged some crops and quality is a concern in areas. Yields vary greatly across the province, but overall

are estimated to be close to average. Winter cereals are being seeded as time allows. The Ministry of Agriculture has a Forage, Feed and Custom Service listing for producers to advertise and source feed products. It is available at www.agriculture.gov. sk.ca/FeedForageListing. Farmers are busy with harvest operations. Follow the 2015 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

Gawyluk and Megan Schreiner. Thank you to all the people who donated pies and helped with the Pie Auction and to auctioneer Jason Buckberger and to the Men’s Golf Club to raise funds for the Splash Park. Funds raised were $1,930.00. Thank you to Maureen Fletcher and Germaine Micholas for organizing the Multicultural Food Fair, plus all the people who supplied the delicious food, plus Laura Marie Lomenda who supplied musical entertainment. Funds raised were $1,085.55 for our Splash park. Four other major events took place at Carlton Park:

Mosaic Underground Golf Tournament on Fri., Sept. 11; Ladies’ Open Tournament Two Person Scramble, Sat., Sept. 12; Member’s Wind Up Tournament had been changed to Sun., Sept. 13; Driving The Ball for the St. Anthony’s Hospital Building Project 15th Annual Esterhazy and District Charity Golf Classic, Mon., Sept. 14, 2015. Thank you to all the good people who donated the flowers for the memorial barrels by the clubhouse to remember past people who have contributed to the park over the years. -Submitted by Laura Marie Lomenda.

Chanise Kienle tees off on #1. She would go on to top the women’s side throwing an 81 (+23 over par).

Jeff McDonald has to throw out of the bush on #1.

Course holds its first disc golf tournament

Only weeks after its design and installation the SandyBeach Disc Golf Course hosted its inaugural tournament Sept. 12. The Dynamic Discs 2-disc Challenge event was well attended, especially for a first effort. “We had 31 golfers signed up by tee-off time Saturday, which as tournament director I am very pleased with,” said Trevor Lyons, who also co-designed the course at the resort located at Good Spirit Lake. “For the first year, and the fact we only installed the nine on Aug. 1, it was pretty gratifying.” Calvin Daniels, who was the other course designer, said it reflects growing interest in disc golf. “I suppose it’s the old adage ‘build it, and they

will come’,” he offered. “In the local parkland region we have seen six new courses installed, three more are green-lit, and several others are being discussed, or fundraised for. “It tells me communities see value in a lowcost, all age recreation option.” Kelly Butz, co-owner of the SandyBeach development said he’d been thinking a disc golf course might be a good fit. “I had done some preliminary research on the sport a year ago, so when I was contacted by Calvin a few months ago, I was interested. It was something which was costeffective for us, and we had a spot where they were able to design a fun and competitive course,” he said.

The great thing is people are using the course. “We wanted something for those with cabins here to enjoy, and interest from our residents in growing steadily,” said Butz. “So hosting a tournament was a logical step, and the support showed it was a good idea.” Butz said the support was not only from players, but many businesses were quick to become involved providing prizes. Daniels said with the good turn-out at a tournament in Yorkton in August, now SandyBeach, and a sold-out event in Fort Qu’Appelle set for Sept. 27, it bodes well for a planned tournament series in 2016. “We plan to formalize things by establishing

the Parkland Association of Disc Golf,” he said. “From there we hope to create a tournament series with events at each course in the PADG area which would mean at least a dozen events in 2016.” “It will certainly be a fun, and busy 2016,” agreed Lyons. The 2016 event at SandyBeach is already scheduled for July 30, as part of the developing series. As for the recently completed event top golfers were; • Men’s winner: Aaron Kienle with 60 (+1 over par) • Women’s winner: Chanise Kienle with 81

(+23 over par) • Closest to the pin: Owen South - 14’ 8” from the pin • Men’s longest drive:

Jason Kienle - 320’ • Ladies’ longest drive: Cindy Pittman - 125’ Submitted story & photos

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I told my doctor that I no longer wanted to take a statin drug. I had read so much about statins and am on meds for cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am 73, and other than having arthritis in my knees, I am not having problems. My doctor put me on fenofibrate. I am due for my yearly checkup in a few months and don’t really know yet how this is working on my cholesterol. I was wondering what your feelings are about this drug. — RS ANSWER: I’ve written a lot about statins, which have been proven to save lives and reduce heart attacks in people with heart disease and also in some people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease. In contrast, although non-statin medications reduce cholesterol, they have not been proven to do what they are really intended to do, which is to prevent heart disease and death. I suspect that medications like fenofibrate

do have a small benefit in protecting the heart; however, I would not use them unless the side effects of statins made it impossible to take one. Often, people intolerant of one statin do well on another. For people at high risk, such as those with previous heart attack or known blockages, I would try a different class of medication. For people at lower risk, I would work on a diet proven to reduce heart disease risk, such as the Mediterranean diet, and encourage regular exercise and use medications such as fenofibrate sparingly or not at all. Another medication, ezitimibe (Zetia or Ezetrol), also lowers cholesterol but without convincing proof that it lowers heart disease risk. It may be that the mechanism by which statins reduce heart risk is not just through lowering cholesterol. Learn more about high cholesterol and how to control it in the cholesterol booklet. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 81 years old and in

good health. I am 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weigh 168 pounds, the same as in 1950. My blood pressure and cholesterol are good on treatment, and my pulse is 62. I drink an energy drink three or four times a week after the noon meal, when I don’t take a nap and need to keep going. I am a farmer, and am active every day. Are these energy drinks harmful to me? — L.M.W.

• On Sept. 26, 1580, English seaman Francis Drake returns to England, becoming the first British navigator to sail around the world. Drake had set out from England on Dec. 13, 1577, with five ships on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. • On Sept. 27, 1869, in Kansas, Ellis County sheriff Wild Bill Hickok responds to a bar brawl and kills one man. Weeks later he killed a second man in the name of law enforcement. While his brutal ways were effective, local citizens were less than impressed. At the next election Hickok

was voted out. • On Sept. 22, 1953, the world’s first four-level interchange opens in Los Angeles at the intersection of the Harbor, Hollywood, Pasadena and Santa Ana freeways — 32 lanes of traffic weaving in eight directions at once. • On Sept. 23, 1969, the trial for eight antiwar activists charged with the violent demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago. The trial turned into a circus as the defendants used the court to attack President Richard Nixon, the war, racism and oppression. • On Sept. 25, 1978, a Pacific Southwest Airlines 727 jet collides in mid-air with a small plane over San Diego,

killing 153 people. The Cessna’s student pilot did not comply with air controller instruction to keep the plane below 3,500 feet altitude.

ANSWER: The caffeine in one energy drink is about 160 mg per 16-ounce can, which is the equivalent of somewhere around a cup or two of regular coffee, depending on how strong you make it. That much caffeine doesn’t cause problems for most people, especially for those who are used to it. However, it also has 52 grams of sugar — about 14 teaspoons. My advice is to stick with coffee. You will save money and reduce your sugar intake a lot. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. • On Sept. 21, 1989, the Senate Armed Forces Committee unanimously confirms President George H. Bush’s nomination of Army Gen. Colin Powell as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Powell became the first black American to achieve the nation’s highest military post. • On Sept. 24, 1996, bestselling author Stephen King releases two new novels at once. “Desperation” was released under King’s name, while “The Regulators” was published under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Pitch Perfect 2” (PG13) — In the first movie, college girl Becca (Anna Kendrick) learns to love “a capella” — or “organized nerd-singing” as it’s sometimes called around campus. This sequel starts with the Barden Bellas at the top of the competitive college singing scene, then falling from grace after an unseemly wardrobe malfunction during a performance for the president and first lady. Becca and bandmates (including Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson from last time) can compete only in the ultra-competitive international circuit, and find themselves a new rival in a group from Germany. Just like an unnecessary sequel, all of the best parts of this movie are reminders of what was good about the original. There are still musical numbers that will get in your head and mess with your moods, but nothing as fun or disarming as the highest points in the first flick. “Results” (R) — Danny (Kevin Corrigan) is a recently divorced schlub (you can almost smell him) who has more money than he really knows what to do with. He decides to spend that money on a personal trainer so he can learn how to “take a punch.” Danny gets Kat (Cobie Smolders) as his personal trainer. She’s a little prickly, peculiar in her own ways and, of course, very pretty. Danny gets romantic ideas about Kat, but she already is in a wonky relationship with her boss (Guy Pearce), a charming Aussie who seems to fear something about relationships. Writer and director Andrew Bujalski made a funny movie with wellchosen actors, a light tone and a good ending. It’s thankfully clear of mopiness and gratuitous gross outs. The pacing of the workout can wear on a bit, but the results are worth sticking around for. “The Farewell Party” (NR) — In an upscale Jersusalem retirement community, Yehezkel enjoys tinkering with gadgets and playing small pranks on his neighbors. He makes a more serious decision when facing the suffering of his terminally ill friend, Max. Yehezkel consults a team BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB *PURCHASE TWELVE LOAVES OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND RECEIVE YOUR THIRTEENTH FREE* (Cannot be combined with any other offer)

focusing on a narrower timeframe for the designer’s career. Even if it is more visually interesting, this look at creative genius and its price is too jumbled in its narrative and too long on the run time.

of experts at the retirement community (including a veterinarian) and devises a mercy-killing machine. It might not sound funny on paper, but that’s the impressive thing about this movie, you will laugh at some dark stuff — and not in a bad way. There is death, but the driving factors in the movie are heart, compassion and humor. “Saint Laurent” (R) — Renowned fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent (Gaspard Ulliel) did his most inspiring work while his inner-life was in a complete spiral. Saint Laurent, who passed away in 2008, was featured in another biopic, “Yves Saint Laurent” not too long ago. This one distinguishes itself by

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You’ve written often about cooking fresh, healthy (and safe) meals for pets, referencing cookbooks as guides for your readers to use. Those are great but now that so many of us are online, don’t forget that a lot of good videos are available for free that show how to cook for pets! — Jerry C. in Lafayette, La. DEAR JERRY: You’re absolutely right — there are numerous online resources for pet owners looking for great recipes for their dogs and cats. Cooking fresh food for pets does take extra time, and owners must be careful with the ingredients they use, from spices to additions like onions (which are poisonous to dogs). But giving your pet a fresh meal once or twice a week is a great addition to its diet. Some might even consider feeding their pet an exclusively home-cooked diet, but doing so does require a transition period to get used to cooking for one’s pet regularly and adjusting recipes for sensitive stomachs if needed. There are a lot of videos online showing ways for pet owners to cook for their pets, but finding them can be a bit of a chore. YouTube is home to a lot of these videos: For example, Google the Doggy Cooking Network, Salmon Pup Cakes for a demo of the YouTubebased series that features recipes for dogs. Or try Linda’s Pantry, another YouTube series, which outlines how to make a week’s worth of homemade dog food. As always when cooking fresh for your pets, review guidelines on what ingredients aren’t safe for them. And monitor your pet whenever you introduce any new food or treat. Send your questions about pet care to ask@ pawscorner.com.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: A show on A&E called “Longmire” was on for several seasons. Will it be back? Thanks for any info you can give me. — Dave S., Gulf Breeze, Fla. A: I’ll forgive you for missing the column where I let everyone know that “Longmire” was indeed renewed for a fourth season; however, it now airs on Netflix. The 10-episode season four just started streaming Sept. 10, and you also can find seasons one through three there if you need to catch up or just refresh your memory. Returning cast regulars include Robert Taylor, Bailey

Robert Taylor Chase, Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, Cassidy Freeman and Adam Bartley. Gerald McRaney also reprised his role as Barlow Connally for a story arc. Executive producer Greer Shephard revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour this summer that season

four picks up moments after the finale, in which Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) found out who was behind his wife’s murder. Succumbing to his darker impulses, Walt takes off in pursuit of the killer with one thing on his mind: murder. “Now that Walt thinks he knows who his wife’s killer is, how does he go on?” Shephard asks. As for the future of the show, executive producer John Coveny told reporters that he hopes to be talking to them at the press tour for seasons eight, nine and 10. Everyone involved, including series star Robert Taylor, is on board for that possibility. Q: Is it true there is going to be another “Harry Potter” film? — Patty T., via email A: Sort of. There’s a

new film slated to open December 2016 that’s set in the world of Harry Potter; however it’s a spinoff of sorts. It’s called “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which was a textbook (featured in the films) that the prospective wizards had to read at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. J.K. Rowling wrote it under the pseudonym of the fictitious author, Newt Scamander, as tie-in to the Harry Potter books, and made it available for us Muggles to read. Starring in the feature film are a bunch of high-profile actors like recent Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (who portrays the aforementioned Newt Scamander), Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol and Katherine Waterston. Q: I love CBS’s “Under

the Dome,” especially the super-intense season finale! Will there be a season four? — Jack M., via email A: The struggling summer thriller series, based on the Stephen King bestseller of the same name, will not be back for a fourth season. In a glass-half-full sentiment, “Dome” lasted two seasons longer than it should have. When the script was ordered to series, it was intended as a limited-run event series; however, the producers figured out a way to keep the action and intrigue going when CBS ordered another season, and then another. The show now has officially run out of

steam and won’t return for a fourth season. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.

• It was noted author and Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway who made the following sage observation: “Never think that war, no matter how justified, is not a crime. Ask the infantry and ask the dead.” He would know; he volunteered as an ambulance driver on the Italian front during World War I. • Poets, take note: The words “orange,” “month,” “purple” and “silver” have no rhyming

words in English. • Historians say that Queen Victoria didn’t like knocking at doors; she preferred scratching. • If you’re interested in space, you are probably aware that the second person to walk on the moon was Buzz Aldrin. Most likely, though, you didn’t know that his mother’s maiden name was Moon. Aldrin kept this fact a secret from NASA — he was evidently concerned that

his bosses would think he was somehow trying to gain favor. • It’s been reported that in the early days of the Christian church, forks were considered to be inappropriate. • Those who study such things say that deepsea anglerfish mate for life — the male’s life, anyway. The female is much larger than the male, and when they mate the male attaches himself to her abdomen — where he remains, living as a parasite, until he dies. • If you have detected the presence of the paranormal by olfactory means, you’ve experienced “clairalience.” • The ancient Inca believed that an eclipse

Post Harvest Weed Management If photography is your hobby and thistles are your passion, this is your season; start taking pictures. I do not recall a fall post harvest season where the Canada Thistles have been so aggressive and look so healthy out in the field. They are everywhere! If you’re a farmer, your view is quite different as you do not want them anywhere in, or around the fields. However, take the same perspective as the photographer would; this is also your season, your season to take control and eliminate them from next spring’s crop, along with many other perennial, winter annual, and biennial weeds. Take advantage of this optimum time to control these weeds, as this is the time in their “life cycle” when they are most effectively managed. Strategies and best practices include herbicide, cultural and mechanical, or a combination of them. For example, in the case of Foxtail Barley, working the affected area after an application of Glyphosate will finish them off. Post harvest weed management eliminates any late season seed set in addition to stopping the growth of roots underground. Weed species including volunteering crops carry diseases over winter which hurt next year’s crop. Take the opportunity to set up fields for a head start next spring. Eliminate the weeds, you then eliminate the disease risk. Going into harvest, weed control issues from spring have become apparent. Spring environment conditions produced thin crop stands resulting in competitive issues. Herbicides were slow to work in cool, dry spring conditions, resulting in weed escapes. Among other issues, application coverage from water volume or water quality round out the weed control list. However, the early fall season has presented us with the best opportunity in years to cleanup ground for the next spring. Conditions are excellent for fall application of herbicide, both soil moisture and temperature. When would be the best time to apply fall herbicides, and when is it too late? As with spring herbicide applications, timing must be right to achieve best results. The Canada thistle rosette needs to be 6” across for complete control. On most fields they are not big enough. Quack Grass needs to have three leaves, which means the fourth leaf must be showing. I know you need to do something from day to day, but be patient when spraying this fall. A light frost is not a concern for perennial weed control. As a matter of fact, control is enhanced as frost signals the plant to move nutrients into the roots and a herbicide will then move into the roots more effectively. Spraying prior to October 1 leaves cropping choices open for next year. We have time. Come see us at Parrish & Heimbecker for product choice, fall application tips and timing. Say, “thank you.” Those two important words are so embedded in our training as children that we pass the gesture of politesse to the next generation as part of the social drill. My mom was no exception. At a young age, she taught me to get in step every year when my Great-Aunt Miriam sent me a birthday card with crisp $1 bills inside, equal to my years. Since she lived miles away, I couldn’t just “say”

thank you. Instead, Mom shared her stationery and showed me how to write, address and stamp a handwritten note to 916 Lyons Ave. Sure, it’s easier nowadays to say “thank you” with email or text. But the handwritten word does so much more. Expressing gratitude with pen on paper says something about how the thankful person went out of his or her way to do something extra special. That’s why Wendy Brown, former video producer and mom of three, is passionate about handwritten thank-you notes and started her inspiring blog and unique online papergoods boutique dedicated to the art of handwrit-

ing (www.brownink.com). At the age of 5, her mom gave her personalized stationary, and she was hooked. To this day, her prized possessions are shoeboxes filled with letters to and from family, notes to friends and

Making easy yet healthy lunches that your child won’t want to trade with friends in the school cafeteria can be as difficult as your young scholar’s long division homework. Creating an appealing, healthy lunch is not a new challenge, and today’s largely unhealthy pre-packaged lunches or cafeteria “treats” can be temptations that many students find hard to avoid. To help your kids refuel at school, here are several ideas for packing a healthy lunch: Keep it interesting Pack a small quantity of several foods in a Japanese-style, bentotype lunch box. Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal com-

mon in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice, fish or meat, with pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a boxshaped container. Each compartment is filled with uniquely shaped, colorful foods. Bento boxes are a great way to offer healthy foods in a fun and attractive way. Have your child help cut sandwiches with cookie cutters into different shapes. Add colorful fruits and vegetables in different sizes, and pack yummy dips such as fatfree or low-fat yogurt or hummus. dren’s creative juices by suggesting themes, such as: • The Dip: Cut a baked chicken breast into strips, and pack them with honey mustard for dipping. Include carrots and broccoli to dip in fatfree or reduced-fat ranch dressing. • Backward: Make an inside-out sandwich using lettuce to wrap turkey, fat-free or low-fat cheese, and tomato. • Mexican Food Mondays: Set out wholewheat tortillas, lettuce, fat-free or low-fat sourcream, salsa, brown rice and beans that aren’t refried, and have your student build healthy

Forget the white bread Banish boredom by using whole-grain pitas, tortillas or rolls for sandwiches. Switch out the fillers, too. For example: • If your child loves peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, try a peanutbutter and banana rollup. Spread peanut butter on a whole-grain tortilla, add a sliced banana, and roll! • Fill a pita with your child’s favorite vegetables, adding hummus for flavor. Go beyond pretzels! • Dip apple slices in nut/seed butter. • Pack snap peas, sliced bell peppers or cucumbers for color and crunch. • Add some variety with air-popped, low-fat popcorn. Watch the sugar Don’t forget that juice and sodas can be high in sugar and calories. Replace them with water, or fat-free or low-fat milk. So, before you roll up your sleeves and call on your young helpers, arm yourself with these and other ideas for making a healthy lunch that your

Here are two ideas for doing just that with young kids as they reflect and write personalized thank-you notes of appreciation to day-camp counselors, coaches, relatives and friends. Preschoolers: Set out a piece of paper, fold it in half, and let your preschooler stamp or attach stickers of images on the front side of the paper symbolic of things they enjoyed doing with the recipients, such as eating ice-cream cones, going to the beach or catching fish off a dock. Prompt your child to dictate a thank-you message that you write inside. School-age: Young school-age kids will have fun choosing and printing

out their favorite summer photos from your computer and gluing the small prints on paper. Encourage them to write words around each photo describing the activities they did together with the person they are thanking. Show them how to sign, address and stamp the envelope. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Personal matters claim a good deal of the Lamb’s time in the early part of the week. But by midweek, pragmatic considerations (work, school, job-seeking, etc.) begin to take priority. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The seasonal shift ignites the Bovine’s creative aspects. You could do well if you try to combine your penchant for innovation with the more pragmatic demands of the week.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Ideas come easily to you this week. And never mind that some might suggest they’re unworkable and/ or impractical. It’s your vision that counts. Work them out and see what turns up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters continue to dominate the early part of the week. By midweek, more workaday issues once again begin to emerge. Balance your time to give both the attention they need.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new contact could provide an expanded opportunity. But be sure you get all the facts before you consider signing on. Ask questions, and be wary if you don’t get the right answers. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected development could cause some supposedly resolved disagreements to reignite. Deal with the situation before it leads to some really serious problems. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A clash of work-linked viewpoints needs to be discussed openly, honestly and calmly by all concerned before it can impede progress on an ongoing project. SCORPIO (October

hard-water deposits from a shower head (without removing it), use this trick: Add a cup of plain white vinegar to a zippertop sandwich bag (or a larger bag with added vinegar to fit larger showerheads). Submerge the shower head in the vinegar and draw the plastic bag up tightly around the stem. Use a rubber band to secure the bag around the shower head. Leave overnight. Remove, scrub and shower to release the deposits. • Borax can be used to keep sidewalks free of weeds. Simply sprinkle a little Borax on the

sidewalk and sweep into the cracks. This is a very effective weed killer, but it also will kill your grass if you use too much, so keep it in the cracks only! • “Have a stripped screw? Place a wide rubber band over the head and insert your drill. The rubber band fills in the stripped spots and makes the drill catch the screw. It works most of the time.” — D.D. in Nebraska • “Make audio recordings or short videos of you reading your children’s favorite books, then play for them when you are busy doing housework, working or cooking.” —
