“Love, Simon” (PG-13) -High-school senior Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) is not unlike most of his peers -- loving family, great friends, a secret crush on someone he met online. Although maybe he’s not quite like everyone else, since he’s gay and hasn’t shared this information with his loving family or his great friends, and that secret crush is someone from an anonymous website, so he doesn’t even know who it is among his fellow students. As Simon chases romance and

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Count to 10 if you must, but don’t lose your temper, despite that person’s (you know who!) efforts to goad you into reacting. Your restraint will pay off in a big way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week finds you in a sociable mood, ready and eager to enjoy the company of family and friends. It’s also a good time to seek out and renew old friendships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Patience is called for as you await a decision about that project you’re eager to launch. Meanwhile, try to set aside more time to share with that special person in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid becoming involved in a workplace dispute early in the week by insisting both sides submit their stands to a neutral arbitrator. Things begin to cool off by Thursday. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It promises to be a busy but productive week for the Big Cat. The pace slows by Friday, allowing you to catch up on matters you put aside but that now need your attention. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suddenly disruptive family situation is best handled with a cool, calm and collected response. Wait until things

It’s a romcom for the new ages, but it feels just as good and heartwarming as any you’ve seen before. “I Can Only Imagine” (PG) -- This musical biopic details the story behind Bart Millard (Michael

This leads him to explore music after high school, forming the band MercyMe, and to the success that it will achieve after he reconciles with his father and writes the hit song. Although it is technically Christianthemed, the story appeals to a broader audience thanks to a light touch and some genuine heartstringpulling emotions. “Sherlock Gnomes” (PG) -- Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) return with their cast of garden characters, as Mr. and Mrs. Montague and Capulet have moved to the big city. The pair are declared the new garden leaders and tasked with setting up home. All across London, however, gnomes

are going missing. When Gnomeo and Juliet return to the garden one day to find that all the other inhabitants missing, too, they call in the big guns: the arrogantly confident Sherlock Gnomes (Johnny Depp) and his trusty but overlooked assistant (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who have been chasing down a clue-dropping pie mascot named Moriarty (Jamie Demetriou), Sherlock’s nemesis, who may be responsible. “Tomb Raider” (PG-13) -- Alicia Vikander stars as Lara Croft in the newest incarnation of the “Tomb Raider” tale. Daughter of an enigmatic archaeologist (Dominic West) who disappeared and is presumed dead, Lara has

no interest in taking the reins of the family empire. When she finally receives her dad’s true legacy -- a mystery surrounding an ancient goddess controlling life and death -- it turns out there’s nothing this Croft likes more than a puzzle, except perhaps for jumping from disaster to disaster. Although Vikander’s parkour skills are demonstrably on point, the excitement level never exceeded “pretty OK,” and with such rich material, it seems like a waste.

Crop Report: Much needed rain helping Rain across most of the province has helped to alleviate dry topsoil moisture conditions. Areas in the southeast, which was one of the drier regions over the past couple of months, received large amounts that caused flooding. The moisture will help to replenish pasture and encourage hay growth. Seeding operations are

mostly complete, but there are a few fields being seeded for green feed and silage. Germination is patchy in some regions due to dry conditions, but the recent rain has helped. The northwestern region reported large amounts of rain this week. The St. Walburg area recorded 154 mm and the

Barthel 93 mm. In the southwest, areas around Hazenmore received 100 mm. Areas around Lucky Lake, Outlook, Shaunavon, Dinsmore and Rosetown remain very dry, having received less than 25 mm of rain since April 1. Topsoil moisture conditions have improved in much of the province, thanks to the recent rain-

fall. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as nine per cent surplus, 73 per cent adequate, 16 per cent short and two per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as six per cent surplus, 68 per cent adequate, 15 per cent short and 11 per cent very short. Crop conditions have

improved with the recent moisture. The majority of crops are in good to fair condition. Provincially, 74 per cent of spring cereals, 70 per cent of oilseeds and 76 per cent of pulse crops are at normal stages of development for this time of year. Strong winds are slowing down in-crop weed control operations. The majority of crop

damage this past week was due to localized flooding, lack of moisture, hail, strong winds and insects such as flea beetles and cutworms. What’s Happening in Sask Parks This Summer Saskatchewan Provincial Parks have an exciting summer lined up for guests of all ages. Calendars with special event and program details are now available online so that visitors can plan their trips ahead of time and enjoy the wide range of activities offered. “We want guests to make the most of their time spent exploring our parks,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “Offering a variety of unique programs and activities is an important part of

that. Park programs keep kids active, provide fun and entertainment and help visitors connect to nature and learn about Saskatchewan’s wonderful parks.” Several parks have an assortment of daily drop-in programs scheduled throughout July and August. Each park offers activities that are different from the last, from group-led games, crafts, stories and sand castle contests to campfire singalongs, sunset paddles and special musical performances.

Air quality and heart health According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, studies have shown that air pollution can trigger heart attacks and strokes. The threat posed by air pollution is greater among people who have or have had coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, bypass surgery or an angioplasty, heart failure, stroke or transient ischemic attack, or blockages in the arteries of the neck or legs. People who have internal cardiac defibrillators also may be at greater risk of heart attack or stroke due to air pollution. While it’s common to assume that air pollution is only a problem for peo-

ple who live in large cities, the American Heart Association warns against making such assumptions, noting that air pollution can be traced to a host of sources, including wildfires and cooking with wood stoves, that can be found outside of major cities. The AHA also notes that researchers believe pollution has inflammatory effects on the heart that can cause cardiovascular problems.

Whether visiting the park for the day or staying for the full week, everyone is welcome to participate in the park programs and events. SaskExpress will be touring the parks again in July, showcasing the extraordinary talents of young Saskatchewan performers in this year’s Circus of Life show. Performances are scheduled for Candle Lake, Great Blue Heron, Pike Lake, Rowan’s Ravine, Greenwater Lake, Duck Mountain, Moose Mountain and Saskatchewan Landing provincial parks. The popular Learn to Fish program is back this summer with sessions on July 7, 14 and 15 in six different parks, free of charge. With expert anglers, Jason Matity and

Q: One of my favorite shows is “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.” Please tell me it will be back for another season! -- Thomas F., via email A: It shall be back for a fourth season, which will premiere this fall on Monday nights at 8/7c on the CW. I spoke with series star Adam Tsekhman (who plays Gary Green) about it, and he’s excited to get back to the set in July. “They’ve created a lovely sort of egalitarian system on the set,” he told

Add onion and cook 2 to 3 minutes or until browned, stirring occasionally. Add chipotle and oregano; cook 1 minute, stirring. Add mangoes, water, and sugar; cook 10 minutes or until mangoes are soft, stirring occasionally. 3. Meanwhile, sprinkle pork with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper to season both sides. Grill, covered, 8 to 9 minutes or until browned outside and still slightly pink inside, turning over once. 4. Transfer pork chops to cutting board; let rest 5 minutes. 5. Spoon mango sauce over pork. no egos. Everyone’s really sweet. I’m so lucky to be a part of it. And the role is so much fun. I get to work on my comedy chops and play in these fabulous environments. It’s time traveling, and every moment could mean the end for every character. And then, while that’s about to happen, someone (Gary) makes the jokes. So, it’s really fun, goofy and amazing.” Later this year, fans will get to see Adam explore his darker side when he co-stars in the feature film “Dragged Across Concrete.” “It’s about these two cops, Vince Vaughn and Mel Gibson, who get sucked down into the dark criminal world

to save their reputations. And I am one of those dark characters -- Behzad, a used-car salesman. It’s very dark. Very nefarious.” *** Q: I remember you had written about a series reboot of the cult-classic film “Heathers,” but I haven’t seen anything about it lately. Do you know what’s going on? — Gina R. in Indiana A: Paramount has canceled the reboot before an episode even had the chance to air on TV Land. It was originally slated to premiere in March, but that was pushed back due to the Parkland High School shootings. Then it was going to premiere

in July, but the Santa Fe High School shootings happened, so Paramount scrapped it altogether. The producers are actively searching for a new home for the series. Spoiler alert: “The Hollywood Reporter” sources say that season two was to be set in the 1700s and revolve around Marie Antoinette -- with many of the key cast members returning in new roles. With season one perhaps being too triggering in our current “gun climate,” maybe they should just start with season two, which has a historical bent. It might make season one easier for some people to handle in the long run.

Just the right ones. The project was a success. “He had a great time painting and decorating, so we decided to make two more for Mother’s Day gifts for his grandmothers,” she said. Are you looking for simple outdoor projects to enjoy with your kids this summer? A feeder for fine feathered friends is a good starter craft, and together with your child’s creative flourishes, it makes a unique Father’s Day gift,

too. (Or, assemble all the supplies to make the feeder, put them in a box and wrap it up with a bow for a gift Dad or Grandfather can enjoy making together with your child.) Here’s the stuff you’ll need: --1 clean, gallon recycled plastic juice or milk jug with label removed and cap on -- standard coffee mug for a pattern --scissors --thick wire or heavy twine for hanging --nontoxic acrylic paint and paintbrush --waterproof adhesive decorations (optional) --3-inch sticks --glue or outdoor Mod

Whether it’s in coffee, cereal, smoothies or dairybased dressings, adding one more serving of milk to your family’s day can help ensure they get the nutrients they need to build strong bones and teeth. Dairy farm families pride themselves on producing wholesome dairy foods that help their families grow up strong and healthy. There is no “moostaking” the facts about dairy! June was officially declared “Dairy Month” in 1939. Originally, it was a way to distribute extra milk during the warm months of summer by grocer organizations. Dairy provides three of the four nutrients that are typically lacking in American diets: calcium, potassium and vitamin D. It’s unique combination of nutrients plays key roles in preventing heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis. Dairy also is important for building strong bones and teeth. When planning meals, choose milk, cheese and yogurt, all of which are excellent sources of calcium, vitamin D and potassium to help fuel your body. Cow’s milk offers a superior nutrient package over alternative beverages such as soy, almond, rice or coconut. Despite rising fuel and feed costs, milk continues to be a great value at about 25 cents per 8-ounce glass. Fat-free cow’s milk contains 15 fewer calories

per glass, 70 percent more potassium and almost twice as much protein as many calcium-fortified soy beverages. Most milkalternative drinks have only half the nutrients of real milk and cost nearly twice as much. Both organic and regular dairy foods contain the same essential nutrients that are key to a healthy and balanced diet. People who are sensitive to lactose can consume dairy foods that are lactosereduced or lactose-free products. Dairy farming is a family tradition, one that has been a way of life for many generations. Ninety-eight percent of dairy farms are family owned and oper-

ated. Dairy farmers are dedicated and take pride in caring for their cows by working closely with veterinarians to keep them healthy and comfortable. Dairy cows receive regular checkups, vaccinations and prompt medical treatment. Dairy farmers work hard to provide your family with the same safe and wholesome dairy foods they give to their children. People sometimes decrease milk products in their diet because they think it’s fattening. Low-fat and fat-free milk products are the best choice for the fat- and calorie-conscious. An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has 150 calories and 8 grams of fat (4.5 grams

saturated). If you choose an 8-ounce glass of fat-free milk, you’ll consume 85 calories and less than 1 gram of fat. The weight conscious may want to think twice before decreasing dairy products in their diet. The National Dairy Council reported that a study showed that women who consumed the most calcium and ate at least three servings of dairy foods per day were less likely to be obese than those who had low dairy intake. There have been similar results in other studies with children and women of all ages. If you just drink milk at each meal, it isn’t hard to get your three cups of milk every day. If milk isn’t your favorite, add cheese to casseroles or your favorite sandwich, choose yogurt as a snack, create your own favorite smoothie or try this “dairy-licious” recipe for buttermilk blue-cheese dressing. Use it on everything as a dip, dressing or as a topping for my chicken pita pizza. Drink and eat more dairy -- your teeth and bones will thank you.

BUTTERMILK BLUE CHEESE DRESSING 1 cup plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup cottage cheese 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons hot sauce 2 garlic cloves minced or pressed 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese 3 tablespoons chopped green onions, both white and green parts Pulse the yogurt, cottage cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, garlic, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper into a food processor and pulse several times until blended and smooth. Transfer to a small bowl; fold in the blue cheese and green onions. Cover and refrigerate. Makes about 2 1/3 cups. BUTTERMILK BLUE CHEESE CHICKEN PITA PIZZAS 4 (6 inch) whole wheat or white pita breads 2 cups chopped cooked chicken breast 1/4 cup buttermilk blue cheese dressing 2 plum tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 cup shredded partskim mozzarella cheese 4 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

1 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1. Heat oven to 400 F. Place pita breads on a large baking sheet; bake 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Meanwhile, in a bowl, toss chicken with dressing. 2. Top pitas with tomatoes and chicken mixture; sprinkle with cheese, bacon and poultry seasoning. Bake 8-10 minutes or until cheese is melted. Makes 4 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. DEAR DR. ROACH: My dental hygienist recommends rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs after flossing. Lately I have heard the using too much hydrogen peroxide can be harmful. What are your thoughts? -- T.W. ANSWER: Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antiseptic that has some usefulness for household objects; however, I don’t recommend it as an oral rinse. It is too toxic to tissues. In a 1993 study, even hydrogen peroxide solutions diluted to half and quarter strengths caused damage to mucous membranes and caused “overwhelmingly negative subjective reactions.” Thus they were not recommended for oral care. A regular mouthwash is a much better choice, and your dentist can prescribe a medicated mouthwash if needed. Incidentally, I don’t recommend hydrogen peroxide for cleaning cuts and abrasions, either. It isn’t effective at inhibiting bacterial growth. I recommend careful cleaning with mild soap and water or saline and an antibiotic

ointment like Bacitracin. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don’t know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a blood-borne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to diarrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with

severe illness and with poor immune system function. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy by an ophthalmologist, whom I saw for an eye exam recently. Would you please tell me more about this disease? Is there any treatment? What can I expect in the future? It is getting harder to read and do close work. -- N.O. ANSWER: Fuchs’ dystrophy is a condition of older eyes, which happens when the cells in the innermost lining of the cornea (the translucent, colorless front part of the eye) degenerate, causing, initially, deposits in the cornea and later swelling of the cornea. The disease has a complex genetic pattern of inheritance, and tends to progress slowly. Treatments include soft contact lenses to “bandage” the cornea, and eyedrops. Transplant surgery of the affected lining of the cornea (called Descemet’s membrane), or the whole cornea, is the definitive treatment. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Face fears for a fuller life Persistent or irrational fears are known as phobias. Some people may fear specific animals, while others may be fearful of particular situations, such as social events. The intensity with which some people experience fear can be mild, while others may be debilitated by their fears. Psych Central states that traumatic events often trigger the development of specific phobias, and women are slightly more likely to experience these types of fears than men. The National Institute of Mental Health says approximately 4 to 5 percent of the U.S. population has one or more clinically significant phobias in a given year. The health resource Alive states that one in 10 Canadians is affected by a phobia. Learning to move past fears can help people live fuller lives. Fortunately, the NIMH notes that there

are effective treatments available to help people with phobias. People willing to step outside of their comfort zones can conquer their fears. Recognize the fear The first step in beating a phobia is acknowledging its existence. Live Science says going to the dentist, dogs, flying, spiders/bugs, the dark, and heights are some of the more common phobias. Individuals also can benefit by recognizing that others share their fears. Gradual exposure Exposure therapy is

an effective way to treat phobias, says Psychology Today. Increase exposure to the fear incrementally. For example, people with a fear of dogs can look at photos of dogs before moving on to videos. Gradually, such individuals can work toward sitting in a room with a leashed dog that is safely secured, and then eventually advance to petting a dog. Seek help If a person cannot find relief alone, professionals can help them overcome their fears.

Crystal Lake 5 sq. km.

C

rystal Lake is just west of the Manitoba border and is a small lake, similar to a large pond. This is a popular destination for walleye and northern pike. The small size makes trolling the lake easy, as well as a good place for fly-fishing. The northern pike tend to feed off of the walleye, meaning walleye can often be found near structure in which they can hide. Moreover, they are popularly targeted on overcast or windy days, as they are most active while they have cover from predators. The moving water and low-light conditions make them harder to locate. Trolling with crankbaits is an effective choice as well as jigging. Walleye are light sensitive and are best targeted before or after the sun has set. Neutral colours like brown and silver work well for walleye.

The northern pike are much more attracted to bright colours, making red and white, and yellow fiveof-diamonds a good choice for anglers. They tend to be quite

Potential threats to pets in your yard Pets love to roam free, and homeowners with outdoor space often let their pets get some exercise and play time in their backyards. While it’s important for pets like dogs and even some cats to get some time outdoors, pet owners should recognize the potential threats to pet health looming in their lawns and gardens. • Mulch: According to the Pet Poison Helpline, mulch made from cocoa beans can pose a threat to pets. This type of mulch is made of discarded hulls or shells of the cocoa bean. These byproducts of chocolate production contain varying concentrations of the toxins theobromine and caffeine. When ingested in high concentrations, these toxins can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, and, in some instances, death. The amount of these toxins present in a given batch of this type of mulch may not be readily known, so homeowners should avoid applying it. • Slug and snail baits: The PPH notes that the

active ingredient in slug and snail baits is metaldehyde, which is highly poisonous to cats and dogs. Symptoms of distress, including restlessness, vomiting, seizures, and high body temperature, can appear as soon as one hour after these baits are ingested. The baits are typically available in pellet, granular, powder, and liquid form, but each should be avoided by pet owners who allow their pets to play in their yards.

pets as well. Before planting new plants and/or flowers in their gardens, homeowners should inquire at their local gardening center or speak with their veterinarians to confirm if the plants or flowers are

safe to ingest. If not, do not plant them or plant them in raised garden beds that cannot be accessed by curious pets. • Fertilizers: Certain types of fertilizer also

may be harmful to pets. According to the PPH, fertilizers that contain blood meal, bone meal, feather meal, and iron can be dangerous to dogs. When ingested in large doses, such products can form a

concretion in the stomach, which can obstruct the gastrointestinal tract and cause severe pancreatitis. Fertilizers that are high in iron also can contribute to iron poisoning if ingested by pets.

• Compost: Compost is a great and natural way to enrich soil. But compost piles should be cordoned off so curious pets cannot access them. As the organic matter within compost piles decomposes, mold can begin to grow. If ingested by pets, moldy materials inside compost piles can make pets sick in as little as 30 minutes. Pets who have ingested moldy compost may appear agitated, pant, drool, or vomit, and some may even suffer from tremors or seizures. • Flowers/plants: Of course, some flowers and plants can pose a threat to

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday we had a very scary incident in our backyard. I let our Llasa Apso, “Cherie,” run free, knowing that she wouldn’t wander into the woods as long as I was on the back porch, watching her. I was reading the newspaper when Cherie started barking. Looking up, I saw two coyotes at the edge of the woods, slowly approaching her. I ran toward them, waving my arms and yelling

like a crazy person. The coyotes took one look at me and disappeared into the woods. I picked up Cherie and brought her inside. She wasn’t hurt, but the situation could have quickly turned tragic if I hadn’t looked up in time. For now, I’m keeping her indoors and only letting her out on a leash to relieve herself. Is there anything else I can do? -- Bob in Leominster, Massachusetts DEAR BOB: Keeping Cherie on a leash for the short term is a good idea, and I’m very glad you were supervising her backyard exploration. Contact the local animal control agency to report the coyotes’ behavior. Long term, you may want to put up fencing --

at least 6 feet high and 1 foot below ground -- to deter the coyotes, as well as motion-activated lights. Make sure to keep trash securely covered and, if

possible, indoors. Don’t feed pets outside, because coyotes may investigate the food smell. Clear brush from your property and keep hedges trimmed.

On the plus side, you may never see more than two full-grown coyotes in your area -- they are very territorial. If they become problematic, though, your

municipality may need to step in and remove or eliminate the coyotes. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Glands that are located between the pads of the paws leave odors behind wherever the cat has scratched. Other cats know to investigate or avoid the area thanks to the scent and visual hint. Unfortunately for cat owners, scratching can be problematic when the healthy behavior is not focused on objects that should be scratched. When furniture, walls, bedding, or more are targeted by cats, the damage can be irreparable. Presenting alternatives that are fun can focus cats’ attention on scratching elsewhere. Experiment with storebought or homemade scratching posts. The back of a carpet square, some corrugated cardboard or a rope-covered post may suffice, offers The Humane Society of the United States. Scratching where it is not desired can also be dissuaded by placing an appropriate scratching post next to the offlimits item. Use food treats as rewards when the cat scratches responsibly. Place double-sided tape or aluminum foil on items that shouldn’t be scratched, as those textures often keep cats away. If redirecting the scratching does not work, cat owners can seek the help of a veterinarian for more advice.

When frisky kitties shred new sofas, the cats probably did not do it out of spite or even aggression. Cats do not claw at things because they are inherently bad pets. Rather, the urge to scratch is buried within their DNA. According to the pet adoption and animal welfare resource the Animal Care Centers of New York City, scratching is a normal part of cat behavior. Scratching is a good form of exercise for cats, enabling cats to stretch out their limbs and paws. Scratching also serves the purpose of removing the outer nail sheaths so they can be shed and the nails can be naturally maintained. VetStreet.com says that cats also scratch to leave visual and olfactory markers to other animals.

Early signs of Parkinson’s disease Despite affecting roughly 10 million people worldwide, Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, remains a mystery to many people. To people outside of the medical field with no personal or family history of Parkinson’s, the disease may only ring a bell because of some notable names attached to it. The late Muhammad Ali and actor Michael J. Fox are two household names that made their Parkinson’s diagnoses public. But even those who study Parkinson’s for a living do not know everything about this puzzling disease. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the cause of Parkinson’s disease is largely unknown. While there’s no cure

for the disease, various treatment options can help those diagnosed with the disease live as normal and productive a life as possible. The PF notes that understanding the disease and its progression is the first step to living well. Though the foundation also notes that people first start experiencing symptoms later in the course of the disease, learning to recognize some early symptoms may compel people to seek treatment. • Tremor: Many people might experience shaking after a vigorous workout or when they are dealing with stress or injury. But the PF notes that a tremor in a finger, thumb, hand, or chin while at rest is a common early

sign of Parkinson’s disease. • Small handwriting: Handwriting can change as people age, especially if they are experiencing stiffness in their hands or their vision is deteriorating. But micrographia, a disorder in which handwriting becomes abnormally small and cramped, is another early indicator of Parkinson’s disease. • Loss of smell: The PF advises people who are having trouble smelling foods such as bananas, dill pickles or licorice speak with their physicians about Parkinson’s disease. Temporary loss of smell due to something like the common cold, congestion or the flu is not an early indicator of Parkinson’s.

• Difficulty sleeping: A significant other may notice their partner moving suddenly during sleep, and such movements may be indicative of Parkinson’s. The PF notes that periodic tossing and turning is normal, as is quick jerks of the body during initial sleep and in lighter stages of sleep are common and should not be mistaken for Parkinson’s. • Stiffness: Stiffness related to current or past injuries or even arthritis is not indicative of Parkinson’s. But stiffness in the arms, body and legs that is unrelated to injury or arthritis and does not go away with movement might be a sign of Parkinson’s. The PF notes that people sometimes describe this symptom by

saying their feet feel stuck to the floor when they try to move. • Constipation: People who strain to move their bowels might be showing an early sign of Parkinson’s. However, various factors, such as dehydration and a diet without adequate fiber, can cause constipation. In addition, men and women on medication may want to look into side effects of their medications to determine if their medicine, and not Parkinson’s, is the cause of their difficulty moving their bowels. These are just a few potential early indicators of Parkinson’s disease. Information about additional symptoms is available at www.parkinson.org.

Healthy ways to relieve stress throughout the day Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of

each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress. • Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about

something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down. • Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits,

5 tips to make reading a family affair (NC) — One of the best ways to encourage kids to read is by making it a family activity. Here are five tips from the Canadian Children’s Book Centre on how to make reading a pleasant pastime for everyone. 1. Read with your children at bedtime. Making reading a part of the regular bedtime routine provides a great opportunity for parents and children to talk. Sharing a story can lead to discussions about your child’s day, their feelings and emotions, current events and more. 2. Make regular visits to the library a part of your routine. Get library cards for every member of the family and let kids take the lead in checking out books. Pick some books together, but also let kids choose a book or two on their own. 3. Create a quiet space for reading at

home. Creating a quiet reading space inside the home where a child can enjoy long periods of uninterrupted reading is a great way to raise a book lover. Make sure to make it a big enough space for mom or dad to join. 4. Bring books to life. Children love pictures, and reading can be a great way to introduce kids to art. Read a picture book and then have kids design their own cover for the book or encourage children to make their own drawings or paintings for their favourite stories. 5. Introduce books to children in unique ways. There are so many ways to introduce children to new stories and authors. In addition to reading new books, watch or listen to authors read their own books online or through audio books from the local library.

potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday. • Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exer-

cise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can help people combat stress for several hours afterward. • Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply

stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body. Stress is a part of daily life for many people. But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.
