then you know it has made great strides in season two, with wonderful chemistry between the actors, a riveting main storyline, and even-more-interesting side storylines. I especially loved learning Agent Christopher’s (played by Sakina Jaffrey) backstory of how she became the woman she is today. I’m hoping that this wait is good news for “Champions” as well. I love this genuine and quirky comedy — it just makes me feel good. And you really can’t go wrong with something that stars Anders Holm and was created by Mindy Kaling. If this falls through, however, Mindy still has “Four

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Have you heard whether “Champions” or “Timeless” has been renewed by NBC? — Tyler W., via email A: As of this writing, NBC has yet to decide the fate of these two shows, which is kind of unusual in this industry, to take this long. Perhaps the top brass don’t want to be quite so hasty, especially with “Timeless.” If you remember from last year, they canceled the show, and

$10,000 donation made to ICU When Doreen Sereda passed a few months ago, Emil Sereda and his family told friends and family that they would like to have donations made in memory of Doreen made to The Health Foundation for the ICU. “There were many contributions that came in; many people were touched by Doreen during her life and they wanted to remember her. “We wanted the donations to go to the ICU because we felt the nurses there just gave Doreen wonderful care and they were so helpful. They really seemed to go above and beyond and we were grateful for the care they provided,” said Sereda.

“Mr. Sereda and his family were very generous and we are grateful for the significant donations they made that allowed us to buy the medication cart,” said Ross Fisher. “This is a piece of equipment we have needed for some time and it will help the nursing staff look after patients.”

rain showers this week, with large amounts recorded in the west-central region. The Rosthern area received 54 mm of rain, the Kindersley and Moosomin areas 30 mm, the Biggar area 35 mm and the Frobisher area 20 mm. Many areas in the southwestern and westcentral regions remain very dry, including Gull Lake, Shaunavon,

Outlook and Dinsmore, which have received less than 25 mm of rain since April 1. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as four per cent surplus, 67 per cent adequate, 24 per cent short and five per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 61 per cent adequate, 28 per

cent short and 11 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture is in shortest supply in the southwest. Crops, hay and pasture in these areas are affected by the dry conditions. In the parts of the south that received rain over the last few weeks, annual crop conditions have improved; however, hay yield is expected to be lower than average and

pastures are expected to have reduced carrying capacity going into the summer months.

100 years of tractors One hundred years ago, Deere & Company purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company with the intent of building tractors. That purchase lead to the John Deere we know today. Pattison Agriculture celebrated the history of the company by bringing out an array of classic tractors for people to enjoy. They also looked to the future, raising money for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. Staff Photo by Devin Wilger

“Pacific Rim: Uprising” (PG-13) — It’s the next generation’s turn to throw giant robots at otherworldly monsters in the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s inventive 2013 original. This is no shiny new penny, though: The Jaegers (human-controlled giant robot-type vehicles) are still battling the Kaijus (also giant alien-controlled monsters that threaten the existence of all life on Earth). John Boyega stars as Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker

You might not think of seafood as seasonal. If you go to the supermarket, many types of fish are available year-round. But not all seafood is created equal. If you care about fresh seafood, sustainable fisheries, protecting our oceans and eating fish that is healthier for you and your family, it pays to know what fish are in season. Here are some great tips about selecting fish from the Center for Food Safety, www.centerforfoodsafety. org. Five Tips to Choosing Sustainable Seafood: 1. Choose local seafood if possible, and always choose domestic over imported. 2. Choose wild. 3. If it’s farmed, choose seafood from the U.S., especially in low- or nooutput, recirculating systems. 4. Favor fish caught by hook and line, handline, troll (not to be confused with “trawl” fishing, which can be very destructive), jig or speargun. 5. Avoid fish that are high in mercury, PCBs or farmed fish that are given antibiotics. Best Fish to Eat in Summer: •East Coast •Mahi Mahi (troll, pole) •Shellfish (mussels, oysters, clams) (farmed) •Snapper (preferably Yellowtail) •Stone Crab •Striped Bass (aka Rockfish) (hook & line, farmed) •Swordfish (harpoon, troll, pole) •Yellowfin Tuna (troll, pole) •West Coast •Abalone (farmed) •Albacore Tuna (troll, pole)

Pentecost, from the original. A jaded former pilot turned fringe criminal, he is pressed into serving as a trainer and bringing along a ragtag recruit: the scrappy hacker Amara (Cailee Spaeny). As new threats emerge, it’s down to Jake, Amara and Jake’s former co-pilot Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) to stop the re-emergent threat of the Kaiju. Charlie Day reprises as Dr. Geiszler. “Unsane” (R) — It’s a new job in a new city for Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy), whose previous life involved a troubling stalker named David (Joshua Leonard). She’s doing all the right things to recover, including joining a local support group. But, she is coerced into a 24-hour

Worldwide, regulation of the fishing industry is poorly enforced, and less than 2 percent of seafood imports to the U.S. are inspected for contamination. Shipping fish around the world has a negative

Scene from “Paul, Apostle of Christ” commitment to the psych ward for evaluation, which turns into a twisted and trapped nightmare. An orderly is revealed as her former stalker, and as the body count rises, reality becomes skewed. Director Steven Soderbergh is known for innovation, and this is no exception: The

impact on the climate, but it can have an even greater impact on our oceans. With nearly 85 percent of the world’s fisheries overfished, our seafood choices are more important than ever. Decades of overfishing have driven many fish populations to levels so low that recovery is a longterm proposition. Farm raised or wildcaught? Aquaculture, the farming of fish and seafood, has resulted in a far-reaching variety of environmental consequences, including the escape of farmed fish from their containment that threatens native wild fish populations; the spread of deadly diseases and parasites; and the pollution of our oceans from the inputs and outputs of fish farming. Though presented by the industry as a “solution” to over-fishing, the overwhelming evidence is that aquaculture is not relieving any pressures on wild fisheries. Studies also have found farmed fish to be less healthful than their wild

film was shot in relative secret and entirely on an iPhone 7 Plus. “Paul, Apostle of Christ” (PG-13) — A detailing of the final days of the apostle Paul (James Faulkner), imprisoned in Roman Emperor Nero’s darkest dungeon, as a threat to the Roman Empire. He awaits counterparts. Fish farms frequently use antibiotics to control disease in their crowded pens, and PCBs accumulate in farmed fish at a higher rate than wild fish. PCBs can cause significant health concerns for both humans and the environment, and are associated with increased risk of cancer, disrupting the endocrine system, and contributing to developmental and reproductive problems. Eating seasonally — whether it’s fruits, vegetables or fish — is a healthier choice for both our plates and our planet. Use the tips above to go fishing this summer in your grocer’s seafood department and try this wonderful recipe for wild Alaska salmon. death, but what is on his mind is his life — Paul began his life persecuting Christians before his own conversion. The streets of Rome are a bloodbath, with faith flagging in even the staunchest. Luke (Jim Caviezel, in another impassioned biblical performance) risks life and limb to visit Paul in order to tell his story. The message: God forgives, and His grace abounds. Joanne Whalley and John Lynch also appear as Priscilla and Aquilla, companions to Paul during his ministry. “Midnight Sun” (PG-13) — Bella Thorne, once a Disney teen princess, stars as Katie, a girl with a rare disease that precludes her being exposed to sunlight. (Full disclosure: She is

not a vampire; this is a real disease that’s hastily and shoddily portrayed.) She’s been kept company lo these many years (17) by her dad (Rob Riggle), her bestie (Quinn Shephard) and the view through her window of hunky Charlie (Patrick Schwarzenegger — yes, he’s Arnold’s son). The two connect one night and begin a summer romance. But how long can she keep her secret and her health? The biggest question, though, is why this was a theatrical release and not a TV movie of the week.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days. He told the doctor that he would be more stressed if he stayed home. His job is mostly sitting down. Since he didn’t follow the advice, how will this affect his health? — V.B. ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home. My experience is that after receiving life-changing diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery

disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others. For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve suffered from essential tremor for 16 years. I take 500 mg of primidone and 40 mg of propranolol twice daily. I’ve gradually increased the dose over the years, and the combination works quite well. What is the highest dose of these medications that I can take? Also, are there any new drugs on the market that have been proven to help? — S.S. ANSWER: Primidone, a medication indicated for seizures, often is used offlabel for essential tremor. The normal dose for essential tremor is 250-500 mg at night, but doses up to 750 mg sometimes are used. For seizures, the highest recommended dose is 2,000 mg, so although yours is at the high end of normal for essential tremor (“essential,” by the way, simply means we don’t know what is causing it; it isn’t essential for anything), you still are at a dose that’s well below the safe limit. I suscream, salsa and chili seasoning. Stir in rotini pasta. Add olive, pimiento and Cheddar cheese. Mix well to combine. Cover and refrigerate at least 15 minutes. Mix well before serving. Makes 4 (1/2) servings. HINT: Usually 1 full cup uncooked rotini pasta cooks to about 1 1/2 cups. * Each serving equals: About 165 calories, 5g fat, 9g protein, 21g carbs, 519mg sodium, 176mg calcium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Meat, 1 Starch; Carb Choices: 1-1/2.

the dose can be limited by slow heart rate or low blood pressure. If you are doing well, there is no reason to change. Other medications frequently used for essential tremor include gabapentin and topiramate. There also are surgical treatments, deep brain stimulation, gamma knife radiation and ultrasound for resistant cases. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

pect that because you have been on it for so long, your body is used to this dose. The usual starting dose is 25 mg. Propranolol is used for many conditions, including high blood pressure and preventing migraines, but its use in essential tremor also is off-label, meaning that the Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug for use for this condition. “Off-label” doesn’t necessarily mean your prescription is wrong or dangerous, only that it hasn’t been approved by the FDA. In your case, the combination of primidone and propranolol frequently is used and recommended in the medical literature. For essential tremor, experts have recommended doses up to 320 mg per day, but

HOLLYWOOD — Can it really be that Sesame Street is suing The Muppets? Has the world gone crazy? Sesame Street is suing STX films because of “The Happy Time Murders,” which stars Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolf and Joel McHale and was directed by Muppets owner Brian Henson, son of Jim Henson (creator of The Muppets). The film follows the murders of 1980s Muppet Show characters being bumped

Natalie Dormer off one by one. STX says, “We loved the idea of working closely with Brian Henson and the

CHEWY CHOCOLATE CHIP OATMEAL-RAISIN COOKIES If you thought the words “delicious” and “low-fat” could never be used to describe one cookie, think again. This one’s chewy, sweet and chock-full of chocolate bits, yet it still packs only 2 grams of fat per serving.

extract •2 cups all-purpose flour •1 cup quick-cooking oats •1 cup low-fat semisweet-chocolate pieces •1/2 cup dark seedless raisins •1 teaspoon baking soda •1/2 teaspoon salt

•Nonstick cooking spray •1/2 cup (1 stick) light corn-oil spread (56 to 60 percent fat) •3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar •1/2 cup sugar •2 large egg whites •1 large egg •2 teaspoons vanilla

Heat oven to 375 F. Spray 2 large cookie sheets with nonstick cooking spray. In large bowl, with mixer at low speed, beat corn-oil spread, brown sugar and sugar until combined. Increase speed to high; beat until light and fluffy.

Jim Henson Company to tell the story of the active lives of Henson puppets when they’re not performing in front of children!” (WHAT?!) They further added, “While we’re disappointed Sesame Street doesn’t share in the fun, we’re confident in our legal position.” Need further proof that the world’s gone mad? Roseanne Barr’s big mouth has put hundreds of people out of work because of her unnecessary remarks that caused ABC to cancel “Roseanne.” Mario Batali’s charges of sexual misconduct got him axed from “The Chew,” which

Add egg whites, egg and vanilla extract; beat until smooth. With spoon, stir in flour, oats, chocolate pieces, raisins, baking soda and salt until combined. Drop dough by level tablespoons, about 2 inches apart, on cookie sheets. Place cookie sheets on 2 oven racks. Bake cookies 10 to 12 minutes until golden, rotating cookie sheets between upper and lower racks halfway through baking time. With pancake turner, remove cookies to wire racks to cool. Repeat until all batter is used. Store cookies in tightly covered containers. • Each serving: About 90 calories, 2g total fat

has been canceled in turn. Batali also was removed from his many eateries in NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston, including Babbo, Del Posto, Eataly, Esca, Lupa and Osteria Mozza, and all his products have been removed from their shelves. We’re talking a small fortune. Now his three restaurants in Las Vegas (two in The Venetian Hotel and one in The Palazzo Hotel) are being closed July 27. This means hundreds of more people have lost their jobs because of celebrity misconduct. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who gave

us “The Sound of Music Live” (2013), “Peter Pan Live” (2014), “The Wiz Live” (2015), “Hairspray Live” (2016) and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” (2018), are preparing three shows for 2019, “A Few Good Men Live,” “Bye, Bye Birdie Live” and the 1968 avantgarde groundbreaking musical “Hair” (Live). The film version of “Hair” (1979) failed because the nude scene, which caused the Broadway show to be raided several times, was omitted. Is TV ready for a nude scene? “Game of Thrones” star Natalie Dormer will pro-

duce and star in a mini-series as Oscar-winner Vivian Leigh, who won for “Gone with the Wind” (1939) and “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951). Each episode revolves around her films and marriage to legendary actor Laurence Olivier. Dormer soon will be seen in “Patient Zero,” with “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith, and in “The Professor and the Madman,” with Mel Gibson and Sean Penn. Finally, Disney is disappointed in the early grosses for “Solo,” which proves even if you’re in “Star Wars,” you may not be able to fly “Solo”!

avoid dark-colored cookie sheets. Instead, use heavygauge metal cookie sheets with a dull finish (aluminum is ideal). —To avoid burning your cookies, check cookies at the minimum baking time suggested in the recipe, and then watch them closely during their last few minutes in the oven. Also, after baking be sure to remove small cookies from cookie sheet to wire rack right away because they’ll continue to bake on the hot sheet. —Don’t place cookies

on top of each other when cooling — this will cause them to become soggy and lose their shape. —Do your cookies turn hard the next day? Placing a slice of bread in the cookie jar can soften cookies; change the slice every other day. A bread slice also will also keep soft cookies soft, just as it softens hardened brown sugar. For thousands of tripletested recipes, visit our Web site at www.goodhousekeeping.com/recipes//.

Cookie Baking Tips —To prevent cookies from becoming hard and tough, avoid adding more flour than necessary to the cookie dough or batter. Also, avoid overmixing once the flour is added. —For even baking, be sure to shape cookies to roughly the same thickness. —If you have a problem with your cookies being too brown on the bottom,

Five garden-to-table herbs to try (NC) — Herbs are the perfect way to freshen up your garden and dinner plate. A few minutes is all it takes to pick up some herbs at the store and start an edible garden that will add a seasonal kick to your meals. “Herbs are easy to grow, require little maintenance and are equally at home on an apartment balcony as they are in a backyard garden,” says Sonya Palermo, gardening expert. “I love that I can pick up some top-quality potted President’s Choice herbs with the other ingredients for a mouth-watering dish while I’m at my local grocery store.” Parsley. This herb tends to grow well in containers as well as in the garden. Whether it’s Italian or broad-leaf parsley, it’s best to plant towards the end of May to avoid late-season frost. It pairs well with all red and white meats and tastes especially good with cucumber, avocado or carrots. Chives. This easyto-care for herb grows abundantly without maintenance and the taste is sure to impress the young gardeners in your family, who can snack on it during cool summer evenings. Chives’ peppery flavour is the perfect finish for steak, chicken or lamb and they go marvelously well with potatoes, green peas or radishes. Rosemary. This is an excellent choice for container gardening since it appreciates its own space. Be sure to avoid overwatering and provide appropriate separation from other plants to keep the leaves free of mildew. Lamb, pork, beef and turkey are great candidates for a few sprigs, as are squashes, leeks and sweet potatoes. Mint. Another easy grower, mint is best raised in a planter on your patio or in a submerged pot in the garden since it proliferates easily. Maintain your mint by thinning regularly and nipping buds. Lamb, chicken and salmon are all sensational with it, but pairing with watermel-

on, asparagus or snow peas will really blow you away. There’s also nothing like fresh mint in your mojito

on a hot summer day. Thyme. Another loweffort herb to plant, keeping in mind that thyme

likes alkaline soil and full sun. Many people will use this plant as a fragrant ground cover. With a little

pruning in the spring and summer, yours will turn out great and its nuanced flavour and aroma will pay

dividends in the kitchen. Try it with pork tenderloin or get creative with honey lemon thyme cocktails.

ebret Lake, also known as Mission Lake, is a popular lake both winter and summer. Lebret Lake is one of a handful of lakes in the gorgeous Qu’Appelle Valley, known as the Calling Lakes, or the Fishing Lakes. Katepwa, Echo and Pasqua are the others in the group. Just outside Fort Qu’Appelle, the Fish Culture Station raises millions of walleye and trout, forming the backbone of the provincial fish stocking program. There are guides available for anyone who wishes to tour the facility. Reports are that the fish tend to be smaller here, but plentiful. Walleye, perch and pike are all easy to catch. Summer fishing can be really good, but the winter is when the action heats up. Try something new this grilling season Many people feel no backyard barbecue is complete without staples like hot dogs and hamburgers. But grillmasters need not feel beholden to such fare if their hearts and stomachs desire something less traditional. One of the joys of grilling is that there is a seemingly endless array of foods that can be cooked over an open flame. Grilled foods can be lean and healthy while still providing that unmistakable flavor unique to the grill. People who want to expand their grilling horizons while still providing

juicy, delicious fare can try the following recipe for “Tandoori Turkey Burgers with Grilled Red Onions and Tomatoes” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & Th Grill” (Running Press). Tandoori Turkey Burgers with Grilled Red Onions and Tomatoes Serves 4 Turkey Burgers •1 pound ground turkey •1⁄4 cup fine, dry breadcrumbs •2 tablespoons plain yogurt insisted on jumping up on everything and getting to as high a perch as possible. I also have a “jumper.” Often, he’s an “attention jumper.” For instance, if I’m on the phone, he’ll jump on the stove to get my attention. What worked for me — a little, at least — was placing an aluminum pie plate on top of any area where I

•1 teaspoon turmeric •1 teaspoon ground coriander •1 teaspoon ground cumin •1 teaspoon fine kosher or sea salt Cumin Yogurt Sauce •1⁄2 cup plain yogurt •1⁄2 teaspoon ground cumin •Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

•4 seeded hamburger buns •Olive oil, for brushing •Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste •1 cup shredded lettuce •2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

Toppings •2 large red onions, thickly sliced •2 large beefsteak tomatoes, thickly sliced

Prepare a medium-hot fire in your grill. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, yogurt, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and salt until well-blended. Form into four 3⁄4-inchthick patties. For the cumin yogurt sauce, combine the cumin

didn’t want him to go. For example, I keep one on top of the stove and one on top of the refrigerator. When the cat jumps up and lands on a pie plate or knocks it onto the floor, it makes a loud noise. That alerts me, and the noise usually startles him so that he jumps back down. The pie plates also make an unstable sur-

face to jump on, which “Charlie” doesn’t like either. Of course, that’s not the only annoying thing my cat does! But I’ve had to pick my battles. — Christine P., via email DEAR CHRISTINE: That sounds like an effective solution! Of course, you’re placing the pie plates onto very stable sur-

and yogurt together in a bowl until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss the shredded lettuce and cilantro in a bowl and set aside. Lightly brush the sliced onions, tomatoes and cut side of the hamburger buns with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the patties, onions and tomatoes directly over the fire. Grill the tomatoes for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Turn the burgers once after 7 to 8 minutes, then grill for another 7 to 8 minutes, or until the burgers are no longer pink

inside and an instant-read thermometer registers 160 F in the center of each patty. Grill the onions for about 8 to 9 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time, or until softened and slightly charred. During the last minutes of grilling, toast the buns, cut side down, directly over the fire. To serve, place a patty on each bun. Top with a slice of grilled onion, tomato and 1⁄4 cup of lettuce mixture and a dollop of yogurt sauce. Serve the extra grilled onion and tomato slices on the side.

faces, so the cat will land safely and can jump away safely. For higher perches like bookshelves and wall shelves, a cat’s ungraceful exit could send knickknacks or books flying. So, owners, if you intend to try this solution, make sure

that shelves are stable and remove any items that might fall. Readers, do you have any other solutions for keeping cats off counters or other areas? Let your fellow cat owners know! Send your tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Before you adventurous Arians charge right into those new projects, take a little time to learn where you’ll be going so you can avoid getting lost before you get there. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your time is devoted to career demands through much of the week. But Venus, who rules your sign, might be planning how (and with whom) you’ll spend your weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be put off by the surprising turn in the way your project is developing. You’ve invested enough time in it to know how to make all the necessary adjustments. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The work week goes smoothly for the most part. But a weekend visit to a place in your past could hold surprises for your future, especially where

romance is involved. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A sudden attack of shyness for the usually loquacious Lion could be a sign that deep down you’re not sure enough about what (or whom) you had planned to talk up in public. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Deal with that job-related problem on-site — that is, at the workplace. Avoid taking it home, where it can spoil those important personal plans you’ve made. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to let those favorable comments about your business dealings be known to those in a position to be helpful. Don’t hide your light; let it shine. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Avoid added pressure to finish a project on deadline by steering clear of distractions. To put it somewhat poeti-

cally: Time for fun -- when your tasks are done. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be uneasy about an offer from a longtime colleague. But before you reject it, study it. You might be surprised at what it actually contains. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Deal firmly with a difficult family matter. It’s your strength they need right now. You can show your emotions when the situation begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recent dispute with some coworkers might not have been completely resolved. But other colleagues will be only too happy to offer support of your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Let go of that Piscean pride long enough to allow someone to help you with a surprising development. That could make it easier for you to adjust to the change. BORN THIS WEEK: Your willingness to open up to possibilities is why people like you are often among our most popular political leaders.

• It was noted 20th-century American novelist, short story writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway who made the following sage observation: “When you stop doing things for fun you might as well be dead.” • You might be surprised to learn that the largest irrigated crop in the United States isn’t soybeans, wheat or even corn; it’s grass — mostly in lawns, parks and golf courses. • The next time you see a shampoo commercial and note how creamy and frothy the lather seems

to be, keep this in mind: The model in the advertisement probably has either laundry detergent or frothed egg whites on her hair. • You may be among those people who think good deeds and selfless acts are on the decline. If so, consider this story: In 2010, an employee at a recycling company came across 23 U.S. savings bonds while sorting through a bin of discarded papers. Instead of trying to cash the $22,000 worth of bonds himself, Mike Rodgers decided to track down the owner. It turned

out that the woman who had bought the bonds, Martha Dobbins, had been dead for almost two decades. Rodgers didn’t give up, though; he began a search for Robert Roberts, who was also named on the bonds. Though the name is common and Rodgers hit many dead ends, he eventually located the correct Robert Roberts, the son of Martha Dobbins. Roberts hadn’t even been aware of the bonds’ existence. Rodgers, his good deed finally being done, refused a reward. • Ever wonder what the opposite of reverse is? It’s obverse — the front or principal part of an object. On a coin, for instance, the obverse is “heads” and the reverse is “tails.” Thought for the Day: “The secret of life is to appreciate the pleasure of being terribly, terribly deceived.” — Oscar Wilde

The benefits of including dairy in your diet A well-balanced diet has long been touted as a necessary component to a healthy lifestyle. When combined with routine exercise, a well-balanced diet can improve quality of life and reduce a person’s risk for various diseases. No well-balanced diet is complete without dairy. While many people may immediately associate milk with dairy, dairy products are much more diverse than that. In fact, including various dairy products in your diet can provide a host of diverse health benefits.

ly associated with dairy, particularly milk. Vitamin D helps bodies build and maintain strong bones, and products such as fluid milk and soy milk are great sources of vitamin D. Yogurts and cereals fortified with vitamin D also can be great sources of this valuable vitamin.

Dairy products are nutrient-rich The United States Department of Agriculture notes that dairy products provide a host of nutrients that are vital to overall health. • Calcium: The nutrient most often linked to dairy, calcium is vital for building strong bones and healthy teeth. Dairy also helps to maintain bone mass, helping men and women combat age-related bone loss. • Potassium: Dairy products such as yogurt, fluid milk and soy milk are good sources of potassium. That’s beneficial because diets rich in potassium help men and women maintain healthy blood pressures. • Vitamin D: Like calcium, vitamin D is wide-

Health benefits Osteoporosis is a condition in which a person’s bones become fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Age is a risk factor for osteoporosis, but a poor diet that does not include sufficient amounts of dairy also can increase a person’s risk for osteoporosis. The Department of Agriculture notes that dairy can help men and women lower their risk for ailments other than osteoporosis. Adequate dairy intake has been associated with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Athletes may be especially motivated to consume dairy, as its effect on bone strength and maintenance can help them reduce their risk for injury while practicing and competing. Adolescents and children can benefit greatly from diets that contain adequate amounts of dairy. Bone mass is built during childhood and adolescence, so foods such as dairy that promote bone

health can help children and teenagers develop strong, healthy bones. In regard to which dairy products to include in one’s diet, the Department of Agriculture notes the importance of avoiding foods that are high in saturated fat. Dairy products high in saturated fats can contribute to high amounts of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, increasing a person’s risk for coronary heart disease. Low-fat dairy products make for a healthy alternative to dairy that is high in saturated fats, and men and women can discuss such products with their physicians. No balanced diet is complete without dairy, which benefits the body in myriad ways.

What’s on your summer calendar? Fourth of July celebrations, picnics at the park or a family reunion far from home? For your preschoolers, the friendly faces at these summertime gatherings of cousins, aunts, uncles and friends might seem puzzling at first. Who are all these people? Here’s a playful way to prepare your child (and maybe even you!) for these special events before you go. Make fun and easy recycled cereal box puzzles featuring photos of the faces they will be seeing and places they’ll be visiting in coming weeks. Instead of asking, “Who’s that?” as Uncle

Pete scoops ice cream at the reunion dessert bar, you might hear: “Hey, mommy — he’s the guy in my puzzle!” Before you begin, scroll through your photo library and look for a group photo of people you’ll be seeing, and photos of homes or landmarks of places on your itinerary. You’ll be enlarging the images and cutting them into rectangular puzzle pieces to adapt to the size of the boxes. Here’s the stuff you’ll need for one puzzle set of two images (one on the front and one on the back of the boxes): —9 small, empty rectangular single-portion cereal boxes —2 photocopied photographs of extended family members, and/or a place where you will be traveling (about 8 inches by 12 inches) —paint, or wide colored

tape —scissors —household glue or spray craft glue —Empty grapefruit or orange net bag for storage (optional) Here’s the fun: 1. Lay one photo or piece of art face down on a table. Line the boxes side by side on the backside of the photocopy in three vertical rows. Draw around each box with a pencil, and then cut out the pieces. 2. Cover the printing on the sides of the food boxes with paint or colored packing tape, then glue the paper photo pieces on the front of each box. 3. Turn the boxes over, and add another photo following the same instructions. 4. To play, mix up the boxes and start puzzling them on one side, then the other. Say the names of the

people or places as you go. Tell your child how they are related and share a story or two about individual people. When done, I like to keep these puzzle pieces in empty net bags. If you weave a string through the tops, you can hang them on a hook for easy storage between play. Extra idea: For a mini puzzle, use a set of samesize boxes in smaller sizes, such as single-portion raisin boxes. Adjust the dimensions of the enlarged photos to fit accordingly. How to approach sibling rivalries Many parents dream that their children will grow up to be lifelong friends. That happens quite often, but typically not without a few bumps along the way. Siblings disagree from time to time, and sibling rivalry is a part of growing up and charting one’s course in the family unit. However, parents can take steps to avoid sibling rivalries developing between their children. Children routinely test their boundaries and their places within their families, vying for attention from parents or other caregivers, especially when they become a brother or sister for the first time. A first-born child who went from being the sole focus of his parents’ attention may struggle to adjust when another child is welcomed into the family. Sibling rivalry also

occurs because young children may not be able to fully process their emotions as soundly as adults. Kids may not recognize that a sibling is not a threat; as a result, they may act out reactively instead of thinking and choosing a more productive way of behaving. According to Dr. Gail Gross, a researcher and educator with a Ph.D. in Psychology, competitive or aggressive behavior could set the course for a lifetime of negative patterns, influencing a child’s relationships with their siblings or other significant friends or even future romantic interests when they come of age. Parents can take proactive approaches to prevent sibling rivalries from developing between their children. • Encourage friendship before birth. Older

children should become acquainted with the new baby before he or she arrives and be included in the process of welcoming him or her. Parents also can relive the older child’s babyhood, offers childcare expert Dr. Sears. Show older brothers or sisters what they looked like as infants and how life changed for the better. Assign older children key roles in the family, such as a mother or father’s assistant. This way he or she is taking an active part in helping the family run smoothly. • Consider spacing children three to four years apart. By spacing siblings

dren in front of them. Children may interpret comparison as criticism. Children will not reach milestones at the same time, and parents should not compare their kids’ progress, or lack thereof, in front of the youngsters. • Let kids work disagreements out. Children

apart by three or four years, parents may find that one child is ready for more independence while the new baby will require more constant care. This also may alleviate some stress in the household because the older child can be an important helper. • Make sure kids have their own unique belongings. Each child can have their own personal toys and possessions that they hold dear. They can choose to share these with one another in play areas, but they should not be forced to compete over particular items. • Don’t compare chil-

will have arguments, and parents should try not to take sides. Let kids work disagreements out on their own when possible. Sibling rivalries can develop, but parents can take steps to ensure such rivalries do not affect their kids’ long-term relationships with one another.
