At-risk habitat protected from development The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) and its partners today unveiled Valley View, a new conservation area close to Craven, Saskatchewan. The not-for-profit land conservation organization announced the purchase of 135.7 hectares (335 acres) of native grasslands and seasonal wetlands in the Upper Qu’Appelle Natural Area, approximately 40 minutes from Regina. Participating in the announcement today were Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and MP for Regina-Wascana, on behalf of Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada; NCC regional vice-president for Saskatchewan Mark Wartman; Jennifer McKillop NCC Director of Conservation for Saskatchewan, along with NCC staff and project supporters. The Valley View conservation project enhances one of the most significant wildlife habitat corridors across southern Saskatchewan due to its location within the Qu’Appelle Valley, which stretches west to east across the province. The closeness to the towns of Craven and Lumsden and the city of Regina puts the acquired property at a high threat level for rural subdivision and acreage development. The area’s native habitat is also at risk of conversion for annual cropping. The Valley View project is near several protected areas and other natural lands. The Upper Qu’Appelle Natural Area provides important habitat for a number of species listed under the federal Species at Risk Act. Birds such as Sprague’s pipit and chestnut-collared longspur, both threatened, and

Baird’s sparrow, special concern, are likely to be found at Valley View. Now that the property has been acquired, NCC science staff will conduct a thorough inventory of all plant and animal species in the coming weeks. This information will be used to develop a management plan to help protect the species and conserve their habitat. The Valley View conservation project was made possible due to the generous financial support of a number of partners. The Government of Canada is a major contributor through the Natural Areas Conservation Program, a public-private partnership to accelerate conservation. The Government of Saskatchewan contributed through the Fish and Wildlife Development Fund. Other individual contributors have also provided funds to the project. Quotes “I want to congratulate the NCC and their partners for preserving this important wildlife habitat. The Government of Canada is proud to have helped create this new conservative area through the Natural Areas Conservation Program. We’re committed to supporting Canadians taking action to protect the environment and wildlife, now and for future generations.” -Hon. Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Member of Parliament for Regina-Wascana on behalf Hon. Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change “The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to work with the federal government and Nature Conservancy Canada to protect the biologically diverse and natural landscapes in our province, such as the Valley View property,” Saskatchewan
Yorkton
Ministry of Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. “The Saskatchewan Fish and Wildlife Development Fund, which helps fund part of this project, is raised by collecting a portion of hunting and angling licences sold in the province. This ensures that the natural landscape of the Qu’Appelle Valley, which is home to many animal and plant species, will be preserved for future generations.” “Today we celebrate the long-term conservation of native prairie in the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley. With the investment provided by the Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan and generous private donors, NCC’s acquisition of the Valley View property supports
Facts • Grasslands are considered the world’s most endangered ecosystem. Globally, more than 50 per cent have been lost to development. In Saskatchewan, 80 per cent of the original grasslands have been lost to development. • NCC provides public, on-foot access at most of its properties, including the Valley View property.

NCC will manage this property into the future for the benefit of the species that live there, and for the benefit of all Canadians.” -Jennifer McKillop, Director of Conservation for the Nature Conservancy of Canada in Saskatchewan
About The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the nation’s leading not-for-profit private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962, NCC and its partners have helped protect more than 1.1 million hectares (2.8 million acres), coast to coast. In Saskatchewan, NCC has conserved over 60,700 hectares (150,000 acres) of ecologically significant land through land donations, purchases and conservation agreements. The Government of Canada’s Natural Areas Conservation Program (NACP) is a unique public-private partnership to accelerate the pace of land conservation across southern Canada. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) manages the program. Federal funds are matched by contributions raised by NCC and its partners. Habitat conserved under the NACP enhances natural corridors and other protected areas.

Summer free fishing weekend ahead Saskatchewan’s annual summer free fishing weekend is just around the corner. On July 14 and 15, residents and visitors to the province are welcome to fish in any of Saskatchewan’s public waters open to sport fishing without purchasing a fishing licence. “Saskatchewan offers some of the best fresh-
water fishing in the world,” Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. “Free fishing weekend is a great opportunity for families and visitors to make summer memories at one of our province’s many lakes.” For those new to fishing or interested in learning more on fishing necessities, local fishing experts Jason and Jeff Matity will
be leading free Learn to Fish sessions during free fishing weekend. Participants will learn about fish identification, how to pack a tackle box, cleaning/filleting and more. These free lakeside sessions run at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Douglas and Moose Mountain provincial parks on July 14, and Buffalo Pound and Echo Valley provincial parks on
July 15. More information can be found at www.tourismsaskatchewan.com/ places-to-go/provincialparks/summer-fun. Anyone planning to take part in free fishing weekend should note that all other fishing regulations, including possession limits, gear restrictions and size limits on some lakes and rivers, remain in effect. Free fishing
weekend does not apply in national parks and anyone planning on taking fish out of the province must purchase a licence. More information about fishing in Saskatchewan can be found in the 2018 Anglers’ Guide, at www. saskatchewan.ca/fishing. The first free fishing weekend in Saskatchewan was held in the summer of
1989 to encourage participation in sport fishing and increase public awareness about the value and diversity of angling opportunities in the province. In 2015, the province held the first winter free fishing weekend. Annually, approximately 250,000 people sport fish in Saskatchewan, including more than 50,000 outof-province anglers.
Gov’t issues blue-green algae advisory The Water Security Agency and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health are advising the public to avoid swimming in or drinking water where
blue-green algae blooms are occurring. Algae blooms, or heavy concentrations of bluegreen algae, commonly occur during calm, hot
weather in areas of lakes and reservoirs with shallow, slow moving or still water that has sufficient nutrients. Pet owners and livestock producers are
also advised to keep their animals away from such water. Algae blooms often give the water a shimmering, foamy pea soup appear-
ance. They are usually blue-green, bright blue, grey or tan in colour. The recent warm temperatures in the province may result in the quick formation of algal blooms. The blooms typically last up to three weeks and can be pushed around the lake or reservoir by the wind. Swimming in or drinking this algae-contaminated water can cause red skin, sore throat, cramps or diarrhea. In addition, caution should be taken when considering the consumption of fish or shellfish caught in areas of a
water body where a bloom exists; in particular the internal organs of the fish should not be eaten. If you have health symptoms, please call Healthline 811 or contact your health care provider.

HEARING AID “Blockers” (R) — Three effervescent teens (Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan and Gideon Adlon), friends since kindergarten, make a pact to lose their virginity before the end of senior year. It comes down to that holiest of highschool nights — prom night — to make it happen. When the trio’s single parents (played by Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz and John Cena) get wind of their plan, it’s a cavalcade of parental hijinks as the parents follow the girls from party to party in an attempt to, um, “block” their plans. You think it’s going to be a nonstop run of sex gags and trashy jokes, and it is — in the best way — but there are also sweet bits about parenting, growing up, trust and letting go. “Finding Your Feet” (PG-13) — In this sweet British romantic comedy, Sandra (Imelda Staunton) lives what she thinks is a wonderful life, until she finds out her husband of 40 years has been cheating on her — with her best friend, no less. She moves out of a luxury home and into the small London flat of her sister Bif (Celia Imrie), who is eccentric and vibrant — worlds different from the staid and sedate Sandra. But, it may be just what she needs to rediscover her inner self, a

Gideon Adlon, Kathryn Newton and Geraldine Viswanathan in “Blockers”. love of dance and help her find her footing in a new life. Also starring Joanna Lumley, and Timothy Spall as Sandra’s charming suitor. “Another WolfCop” (NR) — Oh, Canada. I swear you are the gift that keeps on giving: Justin Trudeau, gravy on French fries and the 2014 horror camp comedy “WolfCop” — and now its sequel, the appropriately titled “Another WolfCop.” Basically, WolfCop is an alcoholic police officer who also happens to be a werewolf. He battles a local politician who is plotting to addict residents to a microbrew called Chickenmilk Stout, and there’s aliens and also hockey involved. In the lead role is Leo Fafard, who — and I’m not even kidding here — got the WolfCop gig after donning a werewolf suit for a local Saskatchewan band’s music video. Jonathan Cherry, whom you might remember as the plucky goaltender in “Goon,” reprises as Willie Higgins,
and Amy Matysio is Tina, the by-the-books straight man (or woman, as it were). “7 Days in Entebbe” (R) — Rosamund Pike and Daniel Bruhl play two German revolutionaries intent on drawing attention to the Palestinian problem in director Jose Padilha’s retelling of the real-life 1976 hijacking of an Air France flight en route from Tel Aviv to Paris. The flight is taken over and diverted to Uganda, where we experience events from the perspective of the hijackers. Much is made of re-creating the 1970s vibe, and it shows in a well-done hazy brown-gold tone, but it could use more tension, more action and less atmosphere. NEW TV RELEASES “New Girl” Final season

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your persistence pays off as the information you demanded starts to come through. The pace is slow at first, but it begins to speed up as the week draws to a close. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unwelcome bit of news jolts the Bovine, who would prefer that things proceed smoothly. But it’s at most a momentary setback. A Leo brings more welcome tidings. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to pay close attention to the details
before making a commitment. Don’t accept anything that seems questionable, unless you get an answer that can be backed up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Congratulations on getting that project up
and running. But as exciting as it is, don’t let it carry you away. Make sure you set aside time to spend with family and friends. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be sure you are part of the discussion involving your suggestions. Your presence ensures that you can defend your work, if necessary. It also helps gain your colleagues’ support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding needs to be dealt with, or it can grow and cause more problems later
on. Be the bigger person and take the first step to clear the air. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Set some strict guidelines for yourself so your heavier-than-usual work schedule doesn’t overwhelm the time you need to spend relaxing with loved ones. By Cindy Elavsky Q: It’s been a while since I’ve heard anything about “Ozark.” Can you give me any information? It will be back, won’t it? — Christopher T., Alliance, Ohio A: The Jason Batemanstarring drama will return to Netflix for its second season on Aug. 31, when the streaming network drops 10 brand-new episodes. Judging by the trailer for new season, it’s going to be even darker than the first (if that’s even possible). The preview opens with the Byrde family attending a funeral, with Wendy’s (Laura Linney) voiceover to Marty (Jason Bateman): “We’ve done a lot of things — things that we said we would never do. ... What is the endgame?” I’m eager to find out. Q: One of my guilty pleasures is binge-watching “Forensic Files,” and I came across an interesting episode about an author, Michael Peterson, accused of killing his wife, and at the end, they had a postscript written on-screen to say that he got a new trial and ended up being released. What’s the story behind that? — Gina T., via email A: I remember hearing about this case when it came out, and it has more twists and turns than one of Michael’s own novels. “The Staircase,” which was originally released in 2004 in France, is a 13-part miniseries on Netflix that tells the whole story of the murder, the new trial and suppositions about what Michael says actually happened that night. It is quite engrossing and really explores the American judicial system. If you liked “Making a Murderer,” then give “The Staircase” a try. READERS: I am super sad to report that NBC has decided to cancel “Timeless.” The time-traveling drama made history (pun intended) last year when it was canceled after its first season, and then quickly uncanceled a few days later. Season two brought us so many more

to See: Family members set out to determine who is threatening one of their own. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Eve brought a surprise witness to Tate’s custody hearing. Brady’s past came back to haunt him at the hearing. JJ visited Lani as she mourned the loss of her baby. Ciara was concerned as Ben became increasingly unglued without his medication. Hope received some unsettling news about Ben. Eve was forced into a corner during Tate’s custody hearing. Chloe and Eric had a deep discussion about Nicole. Ciara tried to reason with a paranoid Ben while he was hallucinating. Tripp pulled back from his kiss with Claire, who admitted she was starting to have feelings for him. Hope
Darin Brooks stars as “Wyatt” on “The Bold and The Beautiful” questioned Clyde about Ben. Brady was on the hot seat while being implicated in Deimos’s murder. Wait to See: Ciara passes out as the cabin catches fire. GENERAL HOSPITAL Michael surprised Nelle. Sonny received some positive news for

Josslyn tried to make amends. Sonny received word from an old friend. Franco had a heart-to-heart with Scott. Sam made a clean break. Kim had a talk with Oscar. Jason gave Sonny some assurance. Nelle’s appointment was delayed, but Micheal offered a solution. Kiki was relieved. Maxie received a surprise visit. Peter felt a glimmer of hope. Wait to See: Carly confides in Kevin. answers — with just as many questions — as Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus, Jiya and Flynn spent each week trying to stop Rittenhouse’s plan to change history and take over the world. The season finale had present-day Lucy (played by Abigail Spencer) and Wyatt (Matt Lanter) coming face to face with their future selves, when the latter showed up in a blingedout lifeboat, urging them to get on board if they wanted to save Rufus. But all is not completely lost: Everyone involved has expressed interest in filming a two-hour movie to help wrap up loose ends. Co-creator Shawn Ryan tweeted: “If NBC is sincere in wanting a twohour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it.” As of this writing, no official movie announcement has been made, and maybe I’m still holding out hope that another network will pick it up. Netflix saved Fox’s “Lucifer”; is it too much to ask to save my favorite time-traveling history buffs? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71. I’m overweight at 300 pounds and have had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years. I don’t want to offend the cardiologist, but I really do not want to do this. Am I completely wrong? — P.R. ANSWER: Making a decision after knowing all the pertinent information isn’t wrong, even if it isn’t the decision the doctor recommends. I’d like to be sure you have all the right information. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications. If you do have blockages, you have a choice of medical treatment (such as a statin, beta blocker and aspirin), catheter treatment (such as angioplasty with or without a stent) and surgical treatment. Knowing more about the location and severity of any blockage can allow you to make a more informed decision about what treatment is better. I don’t think your cardiologist will be offended if you can give him your reasons for declining an angiogram, even though he and I are recommending it in order to provide the best information to decide whether further intervention is necessary. Slow cooked pork perfect for busy families Slow cookers can help busy families enjoy homecooked meals without hurrying to get those meals on the table each night. A surefire hit for even the pickiest of eaters, the following recipe for “Braised Pork Buns with Quick Pickled Cucumbers & Bean Sprouts” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating for Busy Families” (Fair Winds Press) can satisfy hungry families. Braised Pork Buns with Quick Pickled Cucumbers & Bean Sprouts
Yields 11 servings For pork: •2 teaspoons expellerpressed grapeseed or canola oil •3.15 pounds Boston butt, cut into 3 pieces along natural muscle separation, trimmed of surface fat •1⁄2 teaspoon salt •1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1⁄4 cup vermouth, rice wine or dry sherry •2-1⁄2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage •1 small onion, sliced (about 1 cup)
•3 tablespoons molasses (or honey) •2 tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce •2 tablespoons minced garlic •2 tablespoons minced ginger •1 tablespoon toasted
sesame seeds For cucumbers: •1 tablespoon honey •1⁄8 teaspoon salt •3 tablespoons rice vinegar •2 large cucumbers, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, seeded with a spoon, thinly sliced •1⁄8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper To assemble: •11 soft whole-wheat hamburger buns •2-3⁄4 cups mungbean sprouts To
make
the
pork:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Season the pork on all sides with salt and pepper. When oil begins to shimmer, add pork and brown on all sides, about 4 minutes per side. Add browned pork to a slow cooker. Off of the heat, add the vermouth and then place on low heat, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Add contents of the skillet to the slow cooker, along with cabbage, onion, molasses, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds. Cover
and cook on high for 1 hour; then reduce heat to low and cook for 4 hours (alternatively, cook the pork on low for the entire duration, 6 to 7 hours). To make the cucumbers: One hour before serving, in a medium bowl, stir and dissolve the honey and salt into the rice vinegar and then add the cucumbers and pepper. Chill. To assemble: Toast the buns cut side up under a broiler or in a toaster oven. Fill the buns with pork, drained cucumbers and bean sprouts.
Rely on homecooking for delicious meals Homemade foods have a way of connecting with people that restaurant fare does not. That’s even more true when the meal being cooked is based on a family recipe people recall from childhood. Renowned cookbook author Elisa Costantini pays homage to such recipes in her new cookbook “Italian Moms: Something Old, Something New” (Sterling Epicure). The book is filled with recipes, including this one for “Seafood Paella,” the Italian-born Costantini reconstructed from readers’ emails, notes, letters, and memories.
•2 Spanish onions, chopped •3 garlic cloves, chopped •1⁄4 cup olive oil, plus more for drizzling •2 - 28-ounce cans

Continue to cook the rice for 18 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. While the rice is cooking, heat about 1 inch of water and a drizzle of olive oil in a separate sauté pan, then add the mussels. Steam until the mussels open, then transfer to the paella pan with a slotted
spoon. Steam and transfer the clams in the same way. Take 1 cup of the clam water and whisk together with the saffron in a small bowl. Add to the paella pan, and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes more. Serve the paella directly from the paella pan.
like organization job of the other items, because everything you need to have at hand is in the basket. • “I love to work in the yard, and I always wash my hands before coming in. I put a bar of soap inside a piece of mesh from a potato sack and tie it with a string; then I tie the string to my water faucet outside. Now I can easily wash my hands with soap before coming in. The sack kind of works as a scrubber as well.” — F.A. in Texas • “If you want a lighter foundation for summer and sun protection, try mixing a little foundation with a sunblock. It might
take a bit of experimenting to find the right ratio for the coverage you want, but I find that the sunblock helps the foundation to glide on, and my face feels moisturized as well.” — T.L. in Georgia • “I moved to a much smaller house and have very little storage, so now everything I keep must be necessary. I had several banker’s boxes of old papers that I had been storing for years. I still think there’s a chance I’d need to access the information in them, but I didn’t want to devote a lot storage space to boxes of documents. I bought a small scanner that you feed paper into, and I have used it to scan in all my papers. I’m down to a small box of keepsakes and originals that are important, and the rest is there digitally in case I ever need it.” — A.D.F in Florida Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Strategies that can help build strong immune systems A strong immune system can go a long way toward ensuring one’s overall health. But bolstering one’s immune system is no small task, as even medical researchers admit there is still much to learn about the links between lifestyle and immune function. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strongly functioning immune system requires balance and harmony. So it stands to reason that a highly unhealthy lifestyle will compromise the immune system, but it’s also worth noting that pushing the body too hard in the other direction also can adversely affect immune function. Researchers continue to study the potential links between immune response and variables such as diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress. Though studies are ongoing, the Harvard Medical School notes that the immune system is bolstered by various strategies associated with healthy living. • Don’t smoke. Smoking is linked to a host of diseases and ailments, so it’s no surprise that it also compromises the immune system. The National Cancer Institute notes that cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which compromise the immune system’s ability to effectively combat infections. The effects of smoking on the immune system are both immediate and long-term. Smokers’ immune systems may not be able to fend off common infections like the common cold as effectively as the immune systems of nonsmokers. And over time, as smokers keep smoking, their immune systems will continue to weaken, which the NCI says makes them more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and
multiple sclerosis. • Eat a healthy diet. There is no magical food or foods that can strengthen the immune system to a point where infection is impossible. However, the Cleveland Clinic notes that a balanced, healthy diet that includes a mix of vitamins and minerals plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a bevy of vitamins and antioxidants that help the immune system fight off potential infections. Many people bemoan the absence of fresh fruits and vegetables at their local grocery stores during certain times of the year. Manufacturers typically free frozen fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. That means frozen fruits and vegetables provide similar nutrition to fresh fruits and vegetables during those times of year when foods are not in-season. • Exercise regularly. Like a healthy diet, routine exercise provides a host of benefits, and one such benefit is its impact on the immune systems. The precise relationship between exercise and immune system function remains a mystery. Some researchers suspect that physical activity may flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing one’s risk of getting a cold, flu or other illness. Another theory suggests that exercises causes changes in white blood cells, which the immune system uses to fight disease. These exercise-related changes may make it possible for the cells to detect illnesses earlier than they would if the body was not exercised regularly. While it’s important to note that these are just theories, it’s reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise an important component of a healthy, immune-boosting lifestyle.
• Don’t buy the hype. Men and women interested in boosting their immune systems will no doubt find many products claiming to do just that. Consumers are urged to be skeptical of such products, many of which make dubious claims that are not rooted in recognized scientific research. The immune system remains a mystery in many ways. But several healthy strategies may help people bolster their immune systems and potentially reduce their risk of infection.

HOLLYWOOD — Talks are on between “Roseanne” producers (who include actress Sara Gilbert) and ABC to breathe new life into the recently canceled “Roseanne.” The main catch is that ABC says it would only proceed with a spin-off if Roseanne Barr has absolutely no involvement creatively, financially or otherwise. Barr has always had a creative credit and ownership of the original series. Now lawyers have to figure out if she has creative or financial entitlement of spin-offs because the show is based on the titled character she created. In anticipation of working this out, ABC is holding the timeslot open for the spin-off, which probably will be called “The Connors.” At the end of “Wonder Woman,” we were led to
believe that Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, had died. However, now that “Wonder Women 1984” is in production with Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig and possibly, as rumored, TV “Wonder Woman” Linda Carter, Chris Pine is returning, and you can be sure not in flashbacks or as a ghost. It’s set for a November 2019 release. Tim Burton — who gave us such classics as “Beetlejuice” (1988), “Edward Scissorhands” (1990), three “Batman” films, “Planet of the Apes” (2001), “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” (2005) and the epic “Alice in Wonderland” (2010) — is unveiling his live-action epic remake of “Dumbo,” with Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green and Alan Arkin, in March. One of the major changes made to the classic animated film was shifting the crowning moment, when Dumbo makes his first flight, from the end of the film to the beginning.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I really would like to color my dog’s hair. “Sheera” is an all-white poodle mix, and when she’s groomed and coiffed she looks better than purebred poodles. (She’s beautiful to me even when her coat is all grown out and she needs a bath, of course!) However, I’ve seen news reports that dyeing a dog’s coat could be dangerous. Can you tell me if it’s safe? — Jenna H. in San Diego
DEAR JENNA: Using hair dye made for humans is very dangerous for all pets. Chemicals in hair dye can be life threatening, as a Florida pet owner found out earlier this year. Not only can the pets’ skin react to the chemicals, but dogs and cats tend to lick at any area that irritates them, and then they ingest the dye. It may be possible to dye Sheera’s hair using food coloring. Also, special semi-permanent hair dyes and sprays for pets are available at many pet stores, as are special chalks that can be rubbed onto their fur. These wash off in one or two shampoos. Like any topical treatment, however, your dog could have a reaction to
Chris Pine in “Wonder Woman” Sure sounds like fun. Barbra Streisand was nominated for an Emmy for her recent Netflix special “Barbra: The Music ... The Mem’ries ... The Magic!,” which she now says could well be her last live concert ... EVER! She has been working on her memoirs for more than three years and is five any of these products, even though they’re listed as nontoxic. Further, some animal advocates feel that dyeing a pet’s fur can be stressful for them. If Sheera isn’t used to the process, she certainly could get upset and stressed out. If she has a tough time at the groomer’s, she probably won’t like the dyeing process either. Remember, Sheera is a beautiful dog even without that funky color. If she isn’t bothered at all by the process or the look of her newly colored fur, that’s great. But give it a lot of thought. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.
songs into completing her next album. She has not given up on starring in a remake of “Gypsy,” which she feels would be the perfect way to bookend her movie career, having starred in “Funny Girl,” which was written by Jule Styne, who also composed the music for “Gypsy.” So what would the 76-year-old superstar do besides being Mrs. James Brolin, a star in his own right as one of the leads of the hit CBS series “Life in Pieces”? “Well,” she says, “I just want to direct,” and as the only female director to win a Golden Globe as best director, why not? Finally, Ben Affleck’s next film is called “The Has Been,” which he almost became after the colossal flop “Gigli,” with Jennifer Lopez, which cost $75 million and made only $7 million!

It’s hot here in Texas, and there’s nothing better than a cool, refreshing pitcher of ... beet lemonade?! Yes, that’s right, beet lemonade. It’s not only delicious, it’s also packed with nutrients. While beets aren’t typically showcased in summer recipes, they should be. If you’re trying to improve your health and beat the heat, give beets a try. Beet greens are the tops, and beet roots, or tap roots, are the bottom of the plant. Beet varieties in North America are known as table beets or garden beets, red beets or golden beets. Beets are a popular ingredient worldwide and are used for food coloring, medicinal purposes and sugar production. Sugar beets are a special type of beet that contains high concentrations of sucrose and are grown commer-
cially. These beets are an important part of the sugar industry, and the United States is a leader in its production. Beets are versatile. They can be juiced, roasted, steamed or pickled. They also can be bought precooked and canned for convenience. When selecting beets, choose ones that are heavy for their size with fresh, unwilted green leafy tops still attached. Beets are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and plant compounds, and have an impressive nutritional profile. They are high in vitamins and minerals, and low in calories. The roots are especially concentrated in folate or vitamin B-9,
providing more than five times the amount as the beet leaves. Folate is important because it helps with DNA synthesis and repair. It also encourages cell and tissue growth. Beets also contain a high concentration of nitrates, which have a blood pressure-lowering effect. This may lead to a reduced risk of heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. The dietary nitrates contained in beets are converted into nitric oxide, a molecule that dilates blood vessels, increasing oxygen use and causing blood pressure to drop. This is particularly beneficial for athletes. Dietary nitrates are water soluble, so it is best to avoid boiling beets.
The nitrates help increase blood flow to the brain, improve cognitive function and possibly reduce the risk of dementia. However, more research in this area is needed. Beets are a good source of fiber, which aids in digestive health, as well as reducing the risk of several chronic health conditions. Beets also have a high water and low-calorie content, which are beneficial for weight loss. Try these ways to add more beets to your diet: Beetroot salad — Grated beets make a flavorful and colorful addition to coleslaw. Beetroot dip — Blend beets with Greek yogurt to make a delicious and healthy dip. Beetroot juice — Fresh beetroot juice is best, as store-bought juice can be high in added sugars and may only contain a small number of beets. Beetroot leaves — Cook and enjoy like spinach, add to smoothies and use in pesto. This summer is going to be hot, so make this recipe for Beet Lemonade, and enjoy beets for a cool and refreshing treat!
BEET LEMONADE If you don’t have a food processer, you can shred the beets by hand (no need to peel). Finely grate one bunch beets on a surface lined with cheesecloth on top of wax paper. The more finely grated, the more juice you’ll get. Gather the grated beets in the cheesecloth, tightly twist the top closed and squeeze the juice into a large liquid measuring cup. It’s intense, so blend it with lemon juice as directed below, or with fruit or vegetable juice, like orange or carrot. Transfer the juice to a container and refrigerate up to 3 days. •1 small beet •1/2 cup lemon juice (approximately 5 lemons) •1/2 cup sugar or stevia •6 cups cold water, divided Cover your work surface with wax paper or plastic wrap before you begin peeling the beet. Wear disposable gloves or rub any stains off your skin with a halved lemon. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the beet skin. Attach the shredding blade to a food processor and shred the beet chunks

equaling about 1 cup of shredded beets. Scoop shredded beets into a bowl and set aside. Remove food processor bowl from base and rinse out; replace the clean bowl onto the food processor and insert the regular processor blade. Add shredded beets, lemon juice, sugar or stevia and 1 cup of water and process until smooth. Strain the beet mixture through a sieve into a large bowl, pressing with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Transfer liquid into a pitcher and dilute with remaining water. Adjust sugar or water levels to taste. Refrigerate before serving. Makes 8 cups. Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks.
