Mary Stein of Hazel Dell, Sask. turned 90 Aug. 4. To commemorate her birthday the family made her this table. All of her family helped weld it, the youngest being 10. It has things welded on it like a steering wheel from the family’s Dad’s tractor for the base, (he passed away in 1985). There are 12 spark plugs welded on representing her 12 children. There are wrenches, a cow bell, mower parts, tractor parts, baler parts, hay rake parts, fencing parts and many more parts. They all represent her life. Stein, as a farm wife, had a hand in fixing anything that broke. She still grows a big garden and farms with her daughter.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: One of my favorite shows was “Deadwood” on HBO. Watching that and “The Sopranos” was a ritual for me. Over the years I’ve heard rumors that it’s coming back, but nothing seems to come of it. Any news? — David F., via email A: It’s finally happening! After years of speculation and false starts, at the Television Critics Association press conference in July, HBO programming president Casey Bloys announced that a “Deadwood” movie has been greenlighted.
It is scheduled to begin shooting in October, with a tentative spring 2019 release. A big factor for the delay was rounding up the cast at the same time to film the series. As Bloys explained: “All of these people worked hard to get
this together. It’s been a logistics nightmare getting all of the cast members’ schedules together, but we are there.” Q: Has there been any word on what is planned for “Star Wars: Episode IX” since the death of
DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to know your opinion about whether it is OK to crush up different psychiatric medications and put them in a small container of water to drink. This doesn’t seem very safe to me, but I’d like an expert opinion. — Anon. ANSWER: I’ll give you my answer, and also tell you where to find an expert opinion. My answer is that many people have trouble swallowing pills, and that most pills can be crushed and taken with water or mixed in with food. Your local pharmacy sells pill crushers, or you can get a mortar and pestle. While you are at the
pharmacy, ask your pharmacist. He or she can look at your medications and tell you whether it is safe for you to crush your particular medications. Slow-release medications, of which there are many, should not be crushed. Often, the bottle will tell you, but ask your pharmacist for the expert opinion. DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts about the MiraDRY procedure to get rid of underarm sweat? Is it safe not to have sweat under the arms? — S.J. ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is not normal underarm sweating, but a rare condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis. According to several published papers, the
microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness. This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www.sweathelp. org. DEAR DR. ROACH: What causes foot drop? Is there any cure for it? — B.H. ANSWER: Foot drop is most commonly caused by damage to the peroneal nerve, which wraps around the fibula, one of the two bones of the leg (anatomically, only the lower leg is called the leg, as opposed to the thigh). The nerve can be damaged from trauma, such as during surgery or prolonged hospitalization. Leg casts

Carrie Fisher? I can’t see how they can work around her death, and they definitely can’t recast such an iconic role. — Kellie D., The Villages, Florida A: Carrie passed away from cardiac arrest in December 2016 at age 60, just after she had wrapped on “The Last Jedi.” However, there has been word of a workaround from director J.J. Abrams, and he’s going back two movies in the canon to make it happen. He too knows that there is no “Star Wars” without General Organa, aka Princess Leia. Abrams revealed in a statement: “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and and prolonged positioning with stress on the nerve, such as squatting, also can damage the nerve. Most people describe numbness but not pain, and the dropped foot can cause people to trip, so people with this condition learn to flex the hip to lift the thigh up higher. The diagnosis can be confirmed by electrical studies of the nerves. Treatment usually is to prevent further damage, with a splint to keep the foot flexed upward. A physical therapist can prescribe helpful exercises. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to
role as Leia in ‘Episode IX’ by using unseen footage we shot together in ‘Episode VII’ (‘The Force Awakens’).” What that footage is and how it will play into the mythology is a tightly guarded secret, of course, but J.J. did let us know a few details about “Episode IX,” which is scheduled for release in December 2019. Billy Dee Williams returns to the fold in his role of Lando Calrissian; and, of course, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o and Domhnall Gleeson all are returning, with Richard E. Grant and Naomi Ackie joining the cast. Q: Do you have any “Ozark” news? — Nancy P., via email A: At long last, the slow-
burn, engrossing Netflix drama will return Aug. 31 for its 10-episode second season. And from the official logline of season two, you know this season is going to be filled with just as much nail-biting drama as the first: “The stakes are even higher than before, and the Byrdes soon realize they have to go all in before they can get out.” I’m all tingly just thinking about what’s in store for Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and company, aren’t you? Combining season is just starting in Sask. Producers in the province have one per cent of the crop combined and two per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. The fiveyear average for this time of year is one per cent combined. Reported yields so far range from average to well-below average. Fifty-five per cent of
the fall rye, 15 per cent of the winter wheat, eight per cent of the field peas and seven per cent of the lentils are now in the bin. One per cent of the canola has been swathed. Harvest is most advanced in the south, where three per cent of the crop is combined. Most producers in the central and northern regions are expecting to be in the field within the next few weeks.
There was scattered rainfall in parts of the province this week, with some storms bringing hail. While the rain was welcomed in some areas, it may be too late to benefit the south, where crops are rapidly drying down. Most crops remain in fair condition, although laterseeded crops need rain to help heads and pods fill. Topsoil moisture conditions have improved
slightly with the recent rainfall. Provincial topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are currently rated as 42 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and 18 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 32 per cent adequate, 41 per cent short and 27 per cent very short. Hay yields are below average overall. Estimated average dryland hay yields
Nominate Someone Today Recently, Lieutenant Governor W. Thomas Molloy announced nominations will be accepted until November 1, 2018 for the 2019 recipients of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. “The Saskatchewan Order of Merit enables us to recognize our most outstanding citizens,” Molloy said. “Our province is full of committed individuals who have made our home a better place. I encourage everyone to consider nominating a deserving person for our highest honour.” The Saskatchewan Order of Merit was established in 1985 to recognize excellence, achievement, and contributions to the cultural, social and economic well-being of the province. Previous recipients have come from diverse backgrounds and have made contributions to the arts, business and industry, agriculture and volunteer service. Nominees must be current or former long-term residents of Saskatchewan. Any individual or group can submit a nomination, but the nomination must be for an individual, not an organization. Posthumous nominations are accepted within one year of an individual’s date
of death. The recipients of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit will be invested by the Lieutenant Governor at a ceremony in the spring of 2019. To nominate a deserving individual, or to learn more, visit www.saskatchewan.ca/honoursawards.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a col-

Did you know? According to estimates from the United Nations, across the globe there are 101.8 men for every 100 women. However, in several areas of the world, particularly former Soviet republics, female populations significantly outnumber male populations. In fact, many former Soviet republics have been predominantly female since at least World War II. By contrast, the United States has 100 women for every 98.3 men. According to the World Atlas, Latvia, Lithuania, Curacao, Ukraine, Armenia, Russian Federation, Belarus, Estonia, and El Salvador are countries in which there are considerably more females than males. In Latvia, there were 84.8 males for every 100 females in 2015. Conversely, the United Arab Emirates, which has only a 26.7 per-
cent female population, boasts a very low number of women compared to its male population. Many of the professions in this region are maledominated, accounting for the higher influx of male immigrants.

“The Rider” (R) — Chinese-American director Chloe Zhao helms this sweetly heartbreaking story of a young rodeo upand-comer who struggles to find meaning after an injury leaves him unable to participate in the sport that had come to define his confidence. Brady (Brady Jandreau) is left with seizures after being thrown from a bull, and is informed that with repeat-
SAUSAGE-STYLE PORK CHOPS •1 tablespoon fennel seeds •1 garlic clove, crushed with press •1 tablespoon olive oil •Salt and coarsely ground black pepper •4 bone-in pork rib or loin chops, 3/4-inch thick (about 6 ounces each) •2 red and/or yellow peppers, each cut into quarters •4 plum tomatoes, each cut lengthwise in half Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. In mortar with pestle or in plastic bag, with rolling pin, crush fennel seeds. In cup, mix fennel with garlic, oil and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and black pepper; use to rub both sides of chops. Sprinkle cut sides of vegetables with 1/4 teaspoon each salt and black pepper. Arrange chops and peppers on hot grill rack; cover and cook 5 minutes. Turn chops and peppers

Interestingly, the story is inspired by the lead actor’s real life, although fictionalized, and the film is populated with people, not actors: Jandreau’s father plays his father, and sister plays his sister. Set in the hauntingly beautiful and bereft Badlands of South Dakota, it works, as do its players. “Life of the Party” (PG13) — In an attempt to prove that it’s never too late to get that college degree — and a truckload of revenge

lege to take care of the kids. But the joke’s on him, because she signs up to finish her final year alongside her daughter — and gets busy living that co-ed life. Another McCarthy/ Ben Falcone production, it’s funny, but not over-the-

may be a disease widely associated with women, men should not hesitate to report any discomfort to their physicians, as the National Cancer Institute notes that men are often diagnosed with breast cancer at a later stage than women. The ACS suggests that men may be less likely to report symptoms, thereby leading to delays in diagnosis. The more advanced the cancer is at the time of diagnosis, the lower the patient’s survival rate. Men are urged to report any discomfort or abnormalities in their chests to their physicians immediately.

Let’s just say it’s not her best showcase and leave it at that. “On Chesil Beach” (R) — Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle play Florence and Edward, a pair of newlywed virgins who approach their awkward first night as man and wife from vastly different positions, each colored by personal experiences and the communication constraints of traditionalist, upper-crust 1962 England. The story is told interspersed with flashbacks of their sublime courtship and other pertinent memories. It is based on the Booker Prizewinning novella by Ian McEwan, who also adapted the story. Did you know? While the vast majority of breast cancer diagnoses involve women, men are not immune to the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about one in 1,000 among men in the United States. By comparison, the risk for women in the United States is one in eight. While a man’s risk for breast cancer is considerably lower than a woman’s, the ACS still estimates that roughly 480 men will die from breast cancer in 2018, when more than 2,500 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men. In addition, the ACS notes that black men diagnosed with breast cancer tend to have a worse prognosis than white men. Though breast cancer

She is accompanied by her teen daughter and schoolage son. Dad’s place is seriously swanky with serious security. As it turns out, a gaggle of burglar bad guys (headed by Billy Bragg) are on the premises to find a hidden boatload of cash. When they kidnap the kids but don’t manage to snag Shaun, she must fight for her family using brains, brawn and her maternal instincts. I have been a huge fan of Gabrielle Union ever since “Bring It On” and she definitely has

We moved often when I was young. It was so common then for companies to transfer employees frequently. When we said goodbye to one house in Santa Rosa, California, and hello to another in San Francisco, it didn’t seem out of the ordinary to be on the move. I don’t recall the sendoffs, only the arrivals, because my parents were positive about the idea that we were together as family no matter what or where. Dad made sure my blue-and-white Schwinn bike was packed in the back of the van, the first item to descend the ramp on arrival. Those wheels sent me off exploring right away. Once household goods were unpacked, he built
an amazing swing set. With four-by-fours set in cement, his classic model was so tall and sturdy, my new friends and I could swing to the stars. No wonder it felt like home. My childhood memories return, as households come and go on our block. If you are like these young families on the move, here are five tips to make it smoother for you and the kids: 1. It’s not easy to say goodbye, because connections have been made between your family and people you care about. And some kids focus on everything they’ll leave behind. There is security in sameness. Ease bumps and smooth the inevitable by acknowledging what your family will miss. Collect contact information and photos of people you’ll stay in touch with. If possible, plan on a return visit, so your child knows you’ll reconnect. 2. Arrival day is messy and can feel unorganized. Ease chaos by marking boxes and furniture with room names. During the

Caribbean dishes exhibit the influence of a wide variety of cultures and cuisines, including British, Dutch, French, Spanish, East Indian, West African, Portuguese and Chinese. The cooking technique that made Jamaica famous is the spicy jerk marinade that’s used for both meats and vegetables. The name is derived from the way the meat is poked or “jerked” with a sharp object to create the holes where spices are inserted. Jerk cooking dates back to the Carib-Arawak Indians who inhabited Jamaica in the 17th century. After capturing an animal and thoroughly cleaning it, the carcass was “jerked,” and the resulting holes were stuffed with a variety of spices. Hot peppers and herbs were plen-
tiful on the islands and were used as a preservative before refrigeration was available. The combination of spices also acted as a marinade and a way to tenderize tough cuts of wild game. To cook the jerked meat, the Indians dug a deep pit and lined it with stones. The pit was filled with green pimento wood, which, when burned, would smoke heavily and add to the flavor. The holes that were “jerked” into the meat also allowed heat to escape without loss of moisture. Using marinades based on hot peppers and herb combinations was created by the Indians and the West African Cormantee — who also were called
Maroons, the name given to slaves who escaped the plantations — to flavor and preserve a variety of meats. Jerk marinade is composed of four main ingredients: Scotch Bonnet peppers, whole allspice berries, scallions (also called green onions or spring onions) and thyme. For best results, the meat should marinate in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours. After marinating in the jerk spices, the meat should slowly be smoked over a low fire. Using pimento (allspice), apple, mesquite or hickory wood chips provides an intense smoke that will permeate the meat and create an authentic jerk flavor. The wood chips should be
soaked in water for at least 30 minutes before placing them on the coals. This slow smoking method also makes the meat moist and tender. Jerk marinades are a wonderful way to add spice and a touch of the Caribbean to your barbeque menu. This recipe for Jerk Pork uses the traditional marinade recipe; however, other spices can be incorporated to create your own flavorful variation. JERK PORK Jerk marinades typically use Scotch Bonnet peppers, one of the hottest peppers in the world. Remember to always wear gloves when preparing fresh peppers. It’s best to remove the stems and seeds with your gloved fingers or paring knife. Removing the seeds doesn’t affect the flavor, but greatly decreases the heat. Afterward, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and cold water, and clean any utensils or surfaces you have used. •1/3 cup vegetable oil
•1/3 cup distilled white vinegar •4 green onions, chopped •2 cloves garlic, chopped •2 to 5 Scotch Bonnet peppers, seeded and minced, to taste •3 bay leaves •3 peppercorns •1 tablespoon dried ground cinnamon •3 to 4 whole allspice berries, lightly crushed •1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg •3 pounds pork chops, about 1 inch thick Combine the oil and vinegar in a small bowl. Stir in the green onions, garlic, peppers, bay leaves, peppercorns, cinnamon, allspice, pepper and nutmeg. Trim any excess fat from the pork chops. Place pork chops in a re-sealable plastic bag. Pour the spice mixture over them, coating each chop well. Put the
bag of pork chops in a baking pan and place in the refrigerator to marinate for up to 24 hours, turning once or twice every four hours. Allow the chops to come to room temperature before grilling. Heat the grill until the coals are somewhat white with ash; the flame should be low. Place the chops on the grill and cover with the lid. Grill for 5 to 10 minutes per side, until the chops are no longer pink in the center. Serves 4 to 6. Q: You’ve written that owners should spend time with their dogs in basic obedience training. What are “the basics” exactly? -Ferris T., Huntington, New York A: While the specifics of basic obedience training for dogs are better detailed through books or by professional trainers, I can list these training requirements here. * Housetraining -- The most basic and most important to you and your dog’s peace of mind. Teaching a new dog where and when to eliminate, and training yourself to keep a proper schedule, is a crucial initial step. * Heel -- Your dog should walk calmly along-

blueberries for garnish. Evenly spoon about 1/3 cup blueberries into 4 dessert dishes. In a large bowl, combine dry pudding mix, dry
each dish. Garnish each with 1 teaspoon of reserved blueberries. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes. Serves 4. • Each serving equals: 144 calories, 0g fat, 6g

Reserve 4 teaspoons side you, and not struggle against the leash, pull you down the street or chase after birds, cars or other dogs. * Sit -- A well-trained dog will sit on command. When training on the leash, have the dog sit on your left side. * Down -- The dog should lie down (on his belly, paws forward) on command. * Stay -- In the “sit” or “down” position, the dog should not move until you release him with a verbal command. * Come -- At your command, the dog should come to you, or respond to further directional commands (such as tugging the leash right or left to signal a turn). That’s it: five basic commands and housetraining. It doesn’t sound like much, but teaching a dog of any age these skills will take at least several weeks, if not months. And they must be taught correctly: no hitting or yelling, maintaining dominance over the dog. Remember that basic obedience training doesn’t stop once these skills have been learned. Dogs need regular reinforcement, even if it’s just a five-minute review during their daily walks. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

• It was 18th-century French writer Sebastien Nicolas de Chamfort who made the following sage observation: “Conscience is a dog that does not stop us from passing but that we cannot prevent from barking.” • You might be surprised to learn that famed British author Aldous Huxley, best-known for his dystopian novel “Brave New World,” was a consultant on Disney’s 1951 animated film version of “Alice in Wonderland.” • If you bring to mind an image of John Lennon, more likely than not you’ll see him in your mind’s eye wearing a pair of round spectacles. In July 2007, a single pair of those iconic glasses was sold at auction for a whopping $2 million. • The tongue of the alligator is fastened to the jaw all the way around. That’s why you’ll never see a gator stick out its tongue. • You might be surprised to learn that the kilt originated not in Scotland, but in France.
• You probably know that certain species of snakes can grow to enormous size, with the longest specimens reaching upward of 30 feet in length and the heaviest weighing more than 400 pounds. Kind of makes you wonder what these monstrous serpents eat -- and you might be surprised. According to reports, a pet python named Houdini swallowed a queen-size electric blanket. Even more amazingly, after a twohour operation, the snake lived! • Those who track radio statistics say Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” is the mostrequested song in the United States -- and this despite the fact that it was never released as a single on this side of the Atlantic. *** Thought for the Day: “There’s no secret about success. Did you ever know a successful man who didn’t tell you about it?” -- Kin Hubbard

HOLLYWOOD — At last it’s been confirmed, and we can tell you what Quentin Tarantino has planned for Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio and three-time Oscar-nominee Brad Pitt in his film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The story is about former Western series cowboy Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his best friend and longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt), set in 1969, with the Manson family murders as the backdrop for the story. As a reporter covering the Hollywood scene when the Manson clan murdered actress Sharon Tate and her friends on Cielo Drive, I remember discos, clubs and restaurants shuttered because celebrities were crippled with fear. In fact, none of them left their homes for weeks until they found out who was behind it all. I chatted with Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring at The Factory the night before the murders and was visited the next week by the FBI, who wanted to know what we talked about. Tarantino is pulling out all the stops to make this a big film about Hollywood. He’s also cast Margot Robbie, Timothy Olyphant, Luke Perry, Dakota Fanning, Al Pacino, Emile Hirsch, Tim Roth and Nicholas Hammond, (original TV series “Spider-Man”). “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” opens Aug. 19, 2019. Hollywood is so fickle. Dwayne Johnson rode “Jumanji, Welcome to the Jungle” to just short of $1 billion at the box
Dwayne Johnson in “Jumanji” office and “Rampage” to $426 million, but because his latest release, “Skyscraper,” came in third its first week, behind the animated “Hotel Transylvania 3” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” with a mere $71.6 million (more than half its cost), they think he’s off his game. When the kids are done watching their cartoons and superheroes, the rest of us will be thrilled by “The Rock” climbing his skyscraper. He’s not worried though; he’s already moved on to filming “Jungle Cruise” with Emily Blunt, Paul Giamatti and Jack Whitehall for an October 2019 release. Harrison Ford must have been disappointed when “Indiana Jones 5” was put off for two years,
but he got over it quick by signing to drive a dog sled in the remake of Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild,” which was most memorably made with Oscar-winners Clark Gable (1935) and Charlton Heston (1972). Maybe playing a wilderness prospector in the Yukon will finally earn Harrison Ford an Oscar, as it did for Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant” (2015). Even though Clint Eastwood didn’t get to direct Bradley Cooper in “A Star Is Born” (which Cooper directed and starred in himself), he’ll direct Cooper in the crime drama “The Mule,” with Laurence Fishburne and Dianne Wiest. Hopefully Bradley isn’t playing the title role!
