“Deadpool 2” (R) — Your favorite fourth-wallbreaking, red-and-blackspandex-wearing, irreverent superhero is back in action in “Deadpool 2.” While recovering with the X-Men after a traumatic near-death experience, Wade/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) discovers a boy who is being hunted by time-traveling supercop Cable (Josh Brolin), and is convinced that the kid needs his protection. He suits up to help, with the aid of some random B-level heroes, including the adorably hot Domino
(Zazie Beetz), whose power is simply being lucky. He calls them the X-Force, and yes it’s totally and purposely derivative. It is exactly what you’d expect if you saw the first film, and because Deadpool’s real superpower is not taking himself seriously, it’s a darn good sequel. It’s also perfect for multiple viewings, because there are So Many References. “First Reformed” (R) — A preacher in a dying church, Reverend Toller (in a stunningly humane performance by Ethan Hawke) tends to a troubled flock that includes newly pregnant Mary (Amanda Seyfried), whose radical environmentalist husband is in need of counsel. The Reverend Toller provides, but while doing so, must confront his own troubled
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can “heading” the ball in soccer cause a concussion? I have grandchildren who play soccer, and I am concerned. — G.W.H. ANSWER: The evidence is mounting that repeated trauma to the brain can contribute to a type of brain injury called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is seen frequently in boxers and football players. However, there is more and more evidence that soccer players also may get this inju-
ry, and it correlates to the number of headers players do. Since younger brains may be more susceptible to injuries, and kids have relatively larger heads and weaker necks than adults, the Sports Legacy Institute recommends against heading the ball until the age of 14. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old woman with a lot of hot flashes. I heard that maca root is good for treating these. I have been taking it for two years, and feel like it has really helped me. Is this safe? — J.F. ANSWER: Maca root, a dietary staple in Peru, has been touted as a treatment for both sexual performance and menopausal symptoms. One review found limited evidence for benefit in sexual function, but I could not find any

Fortunately, it has few, if any, adverse effects and might be worth a try for those who haven’t had benefit from or can’t take other treatments. I have to remind you again that you may not be getting what you think you are buying, as oversight on supplements is limited. DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with peripheral artery disease in 1991. What kind of test is recommended for checking up on this? Can it be cured? — J.C. ANSWER: “Peripheral artery disease” is the general term used for cholesterol plaques in the arteries, which can block blood flow. The most common symptom is pain with walking, usually after a specific exercise duration, which is relieved with
rest. However, since these blockages can occur in any artery, PAD can cause many different symptoms, such as pain after eating (when the blockages are in the arteries to the gut). The disease most commonly is diagnosed by noninvasive studies, like a Doppler ultrasound of the arteries or using one blood pressure cuff on the thigh and another on the arm. Sometimes, an angiogram is necessary. Since it’s really the same disease as coronary artery disease and cerebrovascular disease, people with PAD are at much higher risk for heart attack and stroke. Although we cannot, in general, cure PAD, we have many different kinds of treatments to reduce risk of catastrophic events and to improve symptoms. Treatment starts with
Damme, as CIA agent Scott Wheeler, joining forces with Dolph Lundgren, as German special forces soldier/prisoner Marco, in a convoluted cross/double cross plot set on a submarine, which is a CIA black ops site! I don’t even care that most of the acting is cliche and ham-fisted, nor that you have to suspend your disbelief from the Golden Gate Bridge in order to follow the storyline. It’s cheesy action, and all you need to do is order in the pizza and hot wings and put the beer on ice. High five, and you’re welcome.
on a mission. In order to thwart an animal smuggling ring’s plans to steal and sell a baby panda, real person cop Frank (Arnett) with police dog Max will go undercover in the country’s elite dog show in Fabulous Las Vegas, where he will primp and prance despite his toughguy persona in order to nail the bad guys — and yes, I’m still talking about the talking dog here. Will Arnett’s talents are wasted, even as he plays to form as a bumbling human. It’s as bad as it sounds. No ... it’s worse; don’t even bother.

modifying existing risk factors, especially smoking, which is the most powerful modifiable risk. A proper diet that cuts down on excess unhealthy fats and simple sugars is important. A monitored exercise program, gradually increasing in duration and intensity, can have a dramatic effect on function. Most people will benefit from statin drugs and anti-platelet drugs, such as
aspirin. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. People who live in apartments, small homes or condos or those who have embraced the “tiny house” movement must rely on clever decorating to maximize their spaces. Here are some ideas when space is at a premium. • Go vertical. Utilize vertical space, such as lights hung on a wall beside a bed instead of lamps on a nightstand. • Bench seating: Benches can provide more seating when entertaining guests and also can be moved to the living room or elsewhere as needed. Place a small bench in a foyer and put some wicker bins beneath for storage. • Utilize natural light. Rooms that have ample light can seem more spacious. Pull up blinds and use the sunshine to help spaces appear more airy.

Harvest well ahead of recent average Another week of warm and dry weather has allowed producers to make great strides in the field, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. Sixteen per cent of the 2018 crop is now in the bin, up from five per cent last week and significantly ahead of the five-year (2013-2017) average of seven per cent for this time of year. Twentytwo per cent of the crop is now swathed or ready to straight-cut. Reported yields vary greatly,
depending on moisture received in the past few months. Seventy-five per cent of the fall rye, 57 per cent of the winter wheat, 55 per cent of the field peas and lentils, 24 per cent of the mustard, 16 per cent of the barley, 14 per cent of the durum, five per cent of the spring wheat and soybeans, and three per cent of the canola are now in the bin. An additional 29 per cent of the canola and 14 per cent of the mustard are swathed or ready to straight-cut.
Harvest is most advanced in the southwest, where 31 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeastern region has 24 per cent combined, the west-central region 13 per cent and the east-central region seven per cent. The northeast now has four per cent combined, while the northwest has one per cent. Many producers in the north expect to be in the field within the next week. Little to no rainfall was received across the province, although the
Radville area reported 8 mm. Topsoil moisture conditions have significantly worsened this week in the face of the warm and dry weather. Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 25 per cent adequate, 44 per cent short and 31 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 17 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 48 per cent very short. Many southern and central areas have not received significant rainfall in close to two months
and crops continue to rapidly dry down. The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lack of moisture and high temperatures. As well, strong wind has blown swaths around. Some areas in the province received frost, although damage is expected to be minimal as crops were advanced enough. Pastures and hay crops continue to decline due to lack of moisture. Pasture conditions are currently rated as 17 per cent good, 28 per cent fair,
29 per cent poor and 26 per cent very poor. There continue to be reports of stubble and grass fires and concerns remain of feed shortages in some drier areas. Producers are busy combining, swathing crops, desiccating crops and hauling bales. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online – http:// www.saskatchewan.ca/ crop-report. Follow the 2018 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.
Investments made in area parks The Government of Saskatchewan is investing more than $2 million in facility and infrastructure improvements for parks in the province’s central region, which includes Duck Mountain, Good
Spirit Lake, Greenwater Lake, Blackstrap, Fort Carlton and Pike Lake provincial parks. “The central region has seen many upgrades and improvements over the past five years, with even

Did you know? According to Energy Star, homeowners who want to curb their energy consumption can consider upgrading, repairing or replacing the biggest energy consumers in their homes. The following appliances tend to consume the most energy in a typical home. • Heating & cooling unit: Nearly half of all energy used in a home is consumed by HVAC systems. Regularly inspecting and servicing the system can conserve energy and save money. • Water heater: Energy Star suggests replacing water heaters that are more than 10 years old. For example, an Energy Star-rated refrigerator uses 50 percent less energy to run than a refrigerator manufactured 15 years ago. By Cindy Elavsky Q: I’ve seen previews for a new, live-action “The Little Mermaid.” Is there anything you can tell me about it? It looks really good! — Jeanette F. in Florida A: You can catch the fantasy drama — which stars William Moseley, Poppy Drayton, Shirley MacLaine and Gina Gershon — in theaters now. I spoke with Poppy, who plays Elizabeth, the mermaid, and she told me all about it: “It follows the story of a young man called Cam and his little niece Elle. He’s

In the process, he discovers a circus where a mermaid, Elizabeth, is being held captive — an evil lord has caged her soul and her spirit. It’s all about their attempt to rescue her and set her free. “It’s a really beautiful, beautiful story, and Blake Harris, who’s the writer and director, wrote a beautiful script that immediately captured the hearts of all of us involved. The power of belief is incredible, and if you can try to not allow your mind to get confused or bogged down by things and keep a childlike wonder for the world, hopefully magical things will happen.

it comes to picking out vegetables, a good rule of thumb is that they feel heavy for their size and are moist (but not wet or sticky). Because vegetables are largely composed of water, this applies to all vegetables — even those as little and light as mushrooms. As their moisture evaporates, vegetables become lighter and drier, losing flavor, weight and succulence. If you’re surprised at how light something is when you pick it up, you may well be holding a vegetable with a hollow center or dryish flesh. — Deborah Madison, cookbook author For thousands of tripletested recipes, visit our Web site at www.goodhousekeeping.com/recipes/.

I vividly remember when I first fell in love with summer squash. My newly planted kitchen garden was full of all types of herbs, tomatoes, peppers and long, vibrant green squash vines containing beautiful, edible yellow flowers. The bell-shaped blossoms preceded an abundant crop of summer squash. We had so much squash that I quickly learned several delicious ways to prepare it. Summer squash are members of the gourd family and include zucchini, cocozelle, yellow squash (crooked and straight) and pattypan, also called scalloped and scallopini. Summer squash is available year-round, but is best in the warm months. The squash should be harvested when the rind is tender and the flesh is sweet. To select the perfect summer squash at the grocery store, look for ones that are medium-sized, with shiny, unblemished, slightly tender rinds. The larger ones may be fibrous with hard rinds and seeds, while the smaller ones may not have developed much flavor. Summer squash is very fragile and should be handled with care, as small punctures and drops of water will lead to decay. They should be stored in the vegetable bin of the refrigerator, unwashed and in a perforated plastic bag for no more than
In a small, non-corrosive saucepan over medium-high heat, bring vinegar, water, salt and honey to a boil. Pour hot mixture over contents in the glass bowl, pressing down on the vegetables so that brine covers them completely. Let it cool on the counter to room temperature. Transfer the squash pickles and the rest of the ingredients into a 2-quart glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or 2 days for maximum flavor. Keeps in refrigerator for 2 months. Makes 6 cups.
3-5 days. Wash the squash immediately before cooking. Squash can be frozen, but it will be soft, making it more suitable for dishes like casseroles where crispness isn’t important. To prepare squash for freezing, cut off both ends, and either cut it into cubes or slices. Blanch it for 2 minutes in hot water. You also can freeze grated summer squash. Summer squash is low in calories, but the nutrients are in the peel, so never peel summer squash. Squash is a good source of vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin A, dietary fiber, potassium, copper, folate, phosphorus, omega3 fatty acids, vitamins B-1, B-2 and B-6, calcium, zinc, niacin and protein. Squash is deliciously versatile and can be prepared in casseroles, as croquettes, stir-fried, stuffed, baked, boiled or pickled, as outlined in this delicious recipe for Spicy Summer Squash Refrigerator Pickles or used as a “noodle” in my
Summer Squash Noodle Salad. Move over, cucumbers! Summer squash is in season! SPICY SUMMER SQUASH REFRIGERATOR PICKLES •9 sprigs fresh cilantro •3 large cloves garlic, peeled and halved •3 teaspoons mixed peppercorns •1-1/2 teaspoons coriander seeds •3 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes •1-1/2 pounds yellow squash and/or zucchini, sliced into thin rounds. •1/3 cup thinly sliced sweet onion •1-1/4 cup apple cider vinegar •1-1/4 cup water •2 teaspoons kosher salt •2-1/2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup In a large glass bowl that holds about 2 quarts, add the cilantro, garlic, peppercorns, coriander, red pepper flakes, zucchini and onion. Set aside.
SUMMER SQUASH NOODLE SALAD This preparation for squash is a delicious change from a green salad. It keeps well in the refrigerator and holds up to the summer heat for backyard gatherings or picnics. For the vinaigrette: •1/4 cup fresh lime juice •3 garlic cloves, minced •1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup •1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar •3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil •2 tablespoons dried Italian seasoning •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon ground black pepper •1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper For the salad: •3 medium-sized, yellow summer squash or green zucchini or a combination of both, •1 small red bell pepper, seeded and diced
•1 large tomato, cored and diced •1/2 purple onion, thinly sliced •2 stalks celery, sliced •1 cup corn kernels (fresh or frozen and thawed) •1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans or chickpeas, drained and rinsed •1 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped •1 cup flat leaf parsley, chopped •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon ground black pepper Rinse unpeeled squash or zucchini. Julienne using a knife, cut into strips using a Y-shaped peeler or into noodles using a spiralizer. Whisk together all of the ingredients for the vinaigrette in a small bowl until well-combined. Set aside. In a large bowl, mix together the squash, bell pepper, tomato, onion, celery, corn, garbanzo beans, basil, parsley, salt and pepper. Drizzle the squash mixture with the vinai-
grette and toss together to coat. Cover and refrigerate to allow flavors to meld. Mix again before serving. Serves 6 to 8. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! My 6-year-old cat, “Misti,” has a serious weight problem, and the veterinarian said she needs to drop several pounds. The vet told me to feed her less, but Misti cries constantly around feeding time and won’t let up until I put more food into her bowl. What else can I do? Are there weightloss supplements for cats? — Helen T., via email DEAR HELEN: Helping your cat lose weight can be
a struggle, but we all know that getting Misti down to a healthier weight will improve her quality of life. There are several supplements and cat foods formulated specifically for cats that say they help with weight control. You must increase the amount of protein that Misti gets and reduce the amount of carbohydrates. The way to do this is to replace part of her dry food with

The Los Angeles Times devoted a front page of its Calendar section to say: “The sequel surpassed the original, no doubt thanks in part to the pairing of Cher and Andy Garcia. The young cast is beautiful and the old pros, that returned, really delivered.” Disney will kick off its musical craze with the live action “Aladdin,” directed by Madonna’s former husband Guy Ritchie (due out May 24, 2019), then it will unleash the CGI and live action version of “The Lion King,” which will have Beyonce as Nala, Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as his father, Mufasa, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar (coming summer of 2019). Then come December 2019 we’ll finally see the film version of the blockbuster Broadway show “Wicked.” Elton John, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber will give us an animated “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and finally a film of Lloyd’s fourth-longest-running show on Broadway, “Cats,” with Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson as Grizabella, who sings the show-stopping “Memory.” The cast also will boast Taylor Swift, James Corden and Ian McKellen. Lin-Manuel Miranda reacquired the rights to his 2008 Tony Award-winning hit show “In the Heights”

from the Weinstein Company (at least something good came from that scandal) and will produce and star in the show. His mega Broadway hit “Hamilton” will be filmed and released to movie theaters, a rare event. Disney will utilize the elements of its stage production of “The Little Mermaid” for a live-action film, and we also can expect a remake of the Oscar-winning best picture “Oliver,” with Ice Cube as Fagan and as producer, as well as a film of Eric Idol’s Tony Award-winning best musical “Spamalot.” For those Carole King fans who missed “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” Tom Hanks has come to the rescue and will produce the film, which also will include many of her greatest songs from her songbook that were not in the original production. And finally, casting calls are up for Steven Spielberg’s reboot of 10-time Oscar winner (including best picture) “West Side Story.” Even though the film had stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer, Spielberg intends to use unknowns to re-create the magic of the 1961 film. This is the first column I’ve ever written that you could hum songs from as you read it.
