School bells are ringing again! You probably go to great lengths during the school year to ensure your child has the right equipment — pens, notebooks, clothing — to make it through the day. Proper nutrition also is a key ingredient for school success because it fuels brain cells and gives your child the energy and nutrients he or she needs for optimal learning. Packing your child’s lunch lets you know exactly what he or she is eating. Try one or two tips each week and soon you should see some relief in your grocery bills! SAVE MONEY 1. Invest in a good container. Choose an insulated bag and freezer packs to keep food at a safe temperature. 2. Use washable and reusable containers. Avoid plastic sandwich baggies.

“Won’t You Be My Neighbor” (PG-13) — As its subject is the revolutionary but soft-spoken icon of kindness Fred Rogers, it’s no surprise that director Morgan Neville’s “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” 1) is the highest-grossing biographical documentary of all time, and 2) left zero dry eyes in my viewing audience (the DVD really should come fitted with a travel pack of tissues). Through 31 seasons of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” covering a gamut of difficult issues — race, death, family structure, violence, disability and more — we came to know a man who modeled empathy, hope, acceptance and, without fail, love for all of us, big and small. This moving portrait is a deeper look into a life of a man whose values are worth emulating and who set an example worth striving for. “Adrift” (PG-13) — Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin star in a tale of disaster, resilience and romance set (literally) on the high seas. Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) meet and fall in love in Tahiti, then are booked to sail a yacht from Tahiti to San Diego. Into their path, a category 5 hurricane develops,

Buy containers in a variety of sizes to fit your lunchbox needs. 3. Buy in bulk. Avoid single-serve packaging. You save money when you buy food in bulk and pack it yourself into single servings. Buy a large container of yogurt or pudding, and use 4-ounce containers to pack your own. Buy a block of cheese and cut it into cubes or shred it. Buy crackers in boxes, rather than individual packages. 4. Make your own. Look beyond lunch meat. Slice your own meat or grilled chicken breast and cut it into strips or cubes. Avoid prepackaged lunches, which are high-priced. 5. Send in leftovers. Invest in a good insulated food container to keep food warm. Homemade

soup is always a good option. 6. Buy what’s on sale and use coupons. Get whatever is on sale each week and work it into a menu. Use fruits and vegetables that are in season. 7. Buy store-brand food and compare unit prices. 8. Look high and low — bargains are usually on the top or bottom shelves, not at eye level. 9. Plan ahead and have a list when you go to the store. The more time you spend in a store, the more money you spend. MAKE IT NUTRITIOUS 10. Pack a rainbow! Provide a variety of options — the more color, the more nutrients. 11. A healthy lunch should contain foods from each of the five food

Fred Rogers in “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” which they miraculously survive. Since Sharp is physically incapacitated, against all odds and adrift in the middle of nowhere, Oldham must pull it together and save them both. It’s inspirational, yes, but also a horrible nightmare and one more reason that I do not like sailing — especially considering this Dramamine drama is

based on a true story! “Hereditary” (R) — In his directorial debut, Ari Aster delivers a disconcerting and terrifying story of the burden of familial legacy. Annie (in a luminously deranged performance by Toni Collette) has just lost her distant, secretive mother. Her mental state already degrading, she joins an

ers, ginger snaps, raisins, unsweetened applesauce, homemade muffins or fresh fruit. 17. Choose a beverage that hydrates, like water, or choose low-fat or fatfree milk for additional protein, calcium and vitamin D. Avoid drinks with calories and no nutrients. MAKE IT FUN 18. Add some fun touches to the meal. The traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich can become pretty boring. Get a couple of cookie cutters and have kids cut the sandwich into different shapes. 19. Include the kids in the preparation process and give them choices. Take them along when grocery shopping. Let them pick one new fruit or vegetable each week that they would like to try. Let them help pack their lunch. 20. Think beyond bread when making sandwiches. Think whole-grain bagels, whole-grain pita wraps and whole-wheat tortillas. A good alternative is a whole-wheat pita pocket with hummus, shredded vegetables and grilled chicken strips. 21. Pack a variety of options to keep a child’s interest. Avoid packing

emotional support group where she meets a fellow mourner, Joan (Ann Dowd), who introduces her to the world of the occult. Annie and her family (Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and a creepily disconnected daughter played by Milly Shapiro) experience a series of terrifying occurrences that unravel them — immolation or decapitation, anyone? This film is genuinely unnerving and is built for serious deephorror fans.

Lawther) who possibly ran over the devil in the middle of the woods; and a city businessman (Martin Freeman) haunted by his late wife and their demon child. Scary, yes, and funny too. “The brain sees what it wants to see,” says the professor. I see deliciously dark, creepy fun.

“Ghost Stories” (NR) — This lovely little British horror anthology stars Andy Nyman as Professor Goodman, host of a ghoststory-debunking television program. He receives a triptych of case files, meant to effectively scare him supernatural. The mysteries in question involve: a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse) at an abandoned women’s asylum; a young man (Alex

the same lunch every day — this prevents kids from getting bored. 22. Vary the preparation. Try grilled or baked, chopped or grated, plain or with a dip. 23. Practice good nutrition yourself. Children learn by association — you need to be a role model. Discuss with them the benefits of healthy eating. 24. Don’t get discouraged if your child rejects a food on first taste. It can take 15 to 20 tries before a child gets used to a new food. By following these tips, not only will you save money, you’ll also pack a nutritious lunch that your child will enjoy throughout the school year! These are more nutritious; have more fiber, vitamins and minerals, and keep blood sugar steady for optimal learning. 12. Select protein foods wisely. Yorkton high school saves local Terry Fox Run By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer When Roby Sharpe received a telephone call telling him the annual Terry Fox Run was not going to happen in Yorkton, it didn’t sit right with him. “It would have been the first time in 38 years,” he said. So the Yorkton Regional High School counsellor called the Terry Fox Run office to find out details. The problem was a lack of a local organizing volunteer he was told.

Sharpe said the local high school holds its own Terry Fox Run, scheduled for Friday, and he suggested the community could simply piggy back on the school’s effort. “They wanted it to be on Sunday,” he said, adding a lot of schools organize runs outside community effort. “I thought ‘we can’t not have it in Yorkton’,” he said, adding the run has special meaning since student Chad Young had the same cancer as Fox, losing his leg, and ultimately his life. So Sharpe talked to Chad’s siblings Ben and Chelte about

It’s close to the community and the school. — Chelte Young, co-event manager the situation. “We decided we could probably do it at the school,” he said. “It’s close to the community and the school,” said Chelte, who

said she and her brother were eager to take on a sort of ‘project manager’ role for the walk. Ben echoed his sister’s sentiments.

“It’s obviously an event very dear to the community,” he said, adding having a brother whose journey paralleled Fox’s so closely. So the school will host the community run this Sunday, with registration beginning at 12, and the run at 2. People are also encouraged to pre-register online by following the links at ww.terryfox.org Run staff will be on-hand Sunday to collect the pledges. A hotdog lunch will be offered following the run, and Yorkton Co-op has come on-board to help with supplies for the barbecue.

Fall camping an option at Saskatchewan parks Camping season is not over in Saskatchewan with fall camping being offered in over 20 provincial parks. “September may be here but there’s still plenty of time to get out and enjoy our parks,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “Fall in Saskatchewan’s parks is truly a special time. Families can take in the warm sunny days and crisp

nights around the campfire, all while being surrounded by the natural beauty of the changing season.” Campsites can be reserved in advance at Bronson Forest, Buffalo Pound, Cypress Hills, Duck Mountain, Great Blue Heron, Makwa Lake, Moose Mountain, Rowan’s Ravine and The Battlefords Provincial

Parks. Many of these parks offer access to full amenities throughout September. The sites can be booked through the online reservation system at www.saskparks.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-855-737-7275. By reserving in advance, visitors are guaranteed their chosen campsite will be available upon arrival. Campgrounds that are

available exclusively on a first-come, first-served self-registration basis are listed on Sask Parks fall camping page at www.tourismsaskatchewan.com/ places-to-go/provincialparks/camping/fall-camping. Camp-Easy equipped campsites will remain open throughout most of September in Buffalo Pound, Echo Valley and

Pike Lake Provincial Parks. Camp-Easy (www. tourismsaskatchewan. com/places-to-go/provincial-parks/campeasy) is a great option for anyone who doesn’t own camping equipment or simply prefers a more convenient getaway. Park visitors can enjoy roasting marshmallows over the crackling fire this fall as fire restric-

tions have been lifted in all provincial parks, excluding Saskatchewan Landing. In areas where there hasn’t been a lot of rainfall, visitors are reminded to keep fires small and controlled. To plan a park visit this fall, refer to the Sask Parks website for fall camping information Explore park trails, head out for a kayak on the lake or enjoy a picnic in a park.

Harvest stays ahead of recent years’ pace Despite a cool and damp week in much of the province, producers took advantage of breaks in the weather to make considerable harvest progress this week, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Thirty-nine per cent of the crop is now in the bin, well ahead of the five-year (2013-2017) average of 25 per cent for this time of year. Thirtytwo per cent of the crop is now swathed or ready to straight-cut. Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 60 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeastern region has 56 per cent combined, the west-central and the east-central regions has 32 per cent. The northeastern region has 14 per cent combined, while the northwestern region has eight per cent combined.

Ninety-seven per cent of fall rye, 92 per cent of winter wheat, 83 per cent of lentils, 86 per cent of field peas, 53 per cent of mustard, 49 per cent of durum, 46 per cent of barley, 28 per cent of spring wheat and 19 per cent of canola have now been combined. Twenty-six per cent of oats, 30 per cent of chickpeas, eight per cent of canaryseed and five per cent of flax have been combined. Fiftyseven per cent of canola, 34 per cent of spring wheat and 11 per cent of mustard are swathed or ready to straight-cut. Not much progress has been made on soybeans, with harvest progress at five per cent combined, similar to the previous week. Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 22 per cent adequate, 47 per cent short and 31 per cent very short. Hay land

and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 18 per cent adequate, 41 per cent short and 41 per cent very short. The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lack of moisture and strong wind. There were some reports of frost caus-

Airplanes and Anglers -— someone caught a fish! Bikers in bright colors. Coffee-sipping gossipers. Dawdlers and Dog walkers. “On your left!” Scoot and run. Scoot and run. The energetic 6-yearold balancing on her scooter set the pace for her grandmother running alongside — or maybe it was the other way around. They passed me when I stopped to let our family dog, Cali, do some sniffing on the wild grassy shoreline of our city lake. Resuming my run, I caught up behind the duo and eavesdropped on their breathless chatter that sounded like a clever made-up game of “Scoot and Run ABC’s.”

Elms turning colors, but where is an F. (I restrained myself from shouting “Fountain” when I stopped for a water break as they carried on.) Scoot and run. A healthy grandparentgrandchild workout made memories and connections through movement, an alphabet game and conversation. Mary Clapp, fitness coach for 20 years and mom of two, says it’s important to set aside designated times to exercise with kids. But doing it takes discipline, so put the workout schedule on the calendar

and stick to it. “As kids grow, you’ll find that if you make workout time together a priority (with a dose of fun), you’ll continue to share similar interests around physical activity that can last a lifetime,” she says. Like 75-year-old Paula Larsen, who attends Mary’s hydro-fit classes. When 12-year-old granddaughter Isabel, an active swimmer on a community team, visited the class, they enjoyed every splash. “Through the treading water, intervals and bright smiles, they were building a bond and respect for one another,” says Mary. “Wow!” exclaimed Isabel after a challenging core-strengthening routine, “that was a hard one — you are really strong, Grandma!” “Exercising together, whether it’s dog walking, jumping on bikes or taking Eli confessed his feelings to Lani. Hope and Liam had reason to fear for the safety of their unborn child. Brooke surprised Bill by stating she didn’t agree with Katie’s custody suit and said that she would speak on his behalf. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old female. I had a left-breast lumpectomy (with some lymph nodes removed) about 15 years ago, leaving me with a much heavier right breast. I don’t know whether this plays an important role with my problem. Since the surgery, I have had a problem controlling underarm odor. I do not

use any aluminum-based products. I have tried vinegar, milk of magnesia and a deodorant made from milk of magnesia. Within a matter of just a few hours, I notice quite an odor, particularly in my right armpit, which gets worse as the day goes on. I do not perspire profusely, but do develop some underarm moisture. Can you think of any reason this is happening, or any remedy that might work for me? I would appreciate your comments. — D.M.M. ANSWER: I would start by trying a non-antiperspirant deodorant. These are not aluminum-based and work well for most people.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: What was the name of the Disney or Nickelodeon show that Bella Thorne was on when she was younger? How old is she now? — T.J., via email A: Bella Thorne was born Oct. 8, 1997, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, and started out as a child star. She had a recurring role on the HBO drama “Big Love” before landing her own hit Disney series, “Shake It Up.” Her most recent starring role was the Freeform network series “Famous in Love,” which unfortunately was canceled after two seasons.

Bella Thorne The good news is you can catch Thorne in the upcoming Lifetime movie “Conrad & Michelle: If Words Could Kill,” about the tragic real-life story of teen Conrad Roy (played by Austin P. McKenzie), who took his own life after his friend Michelle Carter (played by Thorne) urged him to do it. Carter was found guilty of involuntary

If the deodorant doesn’t work, you should consider another old-fashioned remedy that you haven’t tried: baking soda. It changes the pH of the armpit and helps to keep it dry, and both of those things help get rid of odor. Underarm odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin; the sweat itself is odorless. Thus, if you get rid of the bacteria, you can get rid of the odor. I have prescribed topical antibiotics on occasion. Some people have told me that an alcohol-based hand-sanitizing gel helps. It might be that it dries out the skin and also kills bacteria. I would be cautious about overusing this as a

solution. The underarm is a sensitive area that can get irritated. I’d be happy to hear from readers about other solutions for this common problem, and I will report back on the most successful methods. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe halitosis. I have had my sinuses, teeth and gums checked to see if they are the cause of the odor, but the dentist and ENT found nothing. I was referred by my primary doctor to a G.I. specialist, who found I had a sliding hiatal hernia, which was causing acid reflux. He recommended surgery to push the stomach back into its normal position below

the diaphragm. I decided to pass on the surgery. He recommended taking overthe-counter medications such as Nexium, but after several days my lower back started to hurt, so I stopped taking them. I am reconsidering the surgery and was wondering if this is a good idea. Is it possible that the hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis? — E.H.

character from “The Conjuring 2.” Think of it as a spin-off instead of a sequel, though, much like the movie “Annabelle” became its own entity after first appearing in “The Conjuring.” “The Nun” stars Bonnie Aarons as the titular character currently terrifying audiences, as well as Taissa Farmiga (“American Horror Story”) and Lili Bordan. You also can see Bordan in the biographical film “Curtiz,”

Q. I was taken aback recently when my two young children asked me if singer Justin Bieber has ever been in jail. I know he’s had his share of trouble over the years, but has he ever been arrested? — Andrea G. in Texas. A: Like many young stars who achieve rapid success and are well compensated for it, pop superstar Justin Bieber does have a mugshot. Depending on how old your kids are and how truthful you want to be about his history, you can tell them Bieber was arrested in 2014 in Miami while drag racing

It would be a few years before we would stop hearing stories about Bieber being in some kind of scuffle or verbal altercation. Now, in 2018, he’s found religion and proposed to Instagram model Hailey Baldwin, leaving the flashing lights and sirens in the distance.

ANSWER: Experts believe that 90 percent of the time, halitosis comes from the mouth. What your gastroenterologist is suggesting as the cause of the halitosis is plausible. I found several anecdotal cases where surgery cured

A5

the halitosis. However, it’s not only possible that the hiatal hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis, I think it is unlikely that it does. Since surgery would not otherwise be recommended for a sliding hiatal hernia, I can’t recommend surgery. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. which is about Michael Curtiz, who directed the classic film “Casablanca.” In addition to acting, Bordan is a certified autism movement therapist through the nonprofit organization Guidance Autism. Q. I heard that there is a third movie since the original “The Conjuring” came out a few years ago. Somehow I missed the second one. When does the new one premiere? — J.P. A. “The Nun” is in theaters now, having premiered Sept. 7, and is based on a creepy

ASK A

PROFESSIONAL is respirator fit testing and when Q: What should it be done? A:

Respirator fit testing requirements are explained in The Canadian Standards Association CSA Z94.4 Selection, use, and care of respirators. Fit testing can be achieved by the use of a qualitative or a quantitative method to evaluate the fit of a specific make, model, and size of a respirator on an individual. Qualitative fit testing relies on the person’s ability to smell and taste a test agent whereas quantitative testing uses an instrument to assess the leakage into the respirator in order to assess the adequacy of the respirator fit. Fit testing must be carried out prior to the initial use of a half mask and full-face tight fitting respirator and then at least every 2 years. The Safety Warehouse 911 now offers respirator fit testing at our location and on-site. We would be glad to assist you with understanding the CSA standard and your requirements in respiratory program development and encourage you to challenge us with your safety needs.

with ABBA songs.

HOLLYWOOD — Cherilyn Sarkisian began her career in 1965 at the age of 19 with a No. 1 hit record, “I Got You Babe,” as part of the musical duo Sonny and Cher. Fastforward 53 years, and a 72-year-old Cher is hotter than ever. She’s headlining Las Vegas, at The Park Theater in The MGM Hotel (Oct. 31 to Nov. 17). Cher has added ABBA songs, including “Dancing Queen,” “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” “Mamma Mia,” “Fernando,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Chiquitita,”

Cher “Waterloo,” “S.O.S.” and “One of Us,” into her live shows, and has a new album dropping Sept. 28

Cher has been nominated for two Oscars — for “Silkwood” (1984) and “Moonstruck” (1988), for which she won — seven Emmys (one win), six Golden Globes (three wins), eight Grammys (one win), six People’s Choice Awards (one win) and now she’ll receive The Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 2 (broadcast Dec. 26 on CBS). Since Cher has won an Emmy, an Oscar and a Grammy, she only needs a Tony Award to become a member of the elite EGOT club of entertainers who’ve won all four awards. She’ll get the chance

to earn her Tony Award with the opening of “The Cher Show” Sept. 3 on Broadway. To recap, at 72, she’s got a hit movie, (“Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again”), a Vegas residency, a new album and a Broadway show! Get ready for two classic horror remakes. Sept. 14 will bring the remake of “Predator,” starring Boyd Holbrook (“Milk,” “Gone Girl,” “Logan” and the TV hit, “The Hatfields and the McCoys”), KeeganMichael Key, Olivia Munn and Sterling K. Brown, followed Oct. 19 by the 11th installment of “Halloween,” with Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Patton,

Judy Greer and Nick Castle. While still on remakes, action director Roland Emmerich, who helmed “Independence Day” (1996) and the sequel “ID: Resurgence” (2016), “Godzilla” (1998), “The Patriot” (2000), “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004) and “White House Down” (2013), among others, is remaking the 1976 epic war film “Midway,” which starred Henry Fonda, Charlton Heston, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, Cliff Robertson, James Coburn, Robert Wagner and Tom Selleck. Emmerich has cast Aaron

Eckhart, Dennis Quaid, Nick Jonas, Luke Evans, Woody Harrelson, Mandy Moore and Patrick Wilson. Despite its $100 million budget, this sounds more like the cast of a TV movie than an epic war film! Even though Nick Jonas was in the box-office hit “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” ($962 million gross) and the upcoming “Chaos Walking,” with “Spider-Man” Tom Holland and “Star Wars’” Daisy Ridley, it doesn’t give him enough screen cred to be the young star of an epic war movie. After all, he’s not even “Midway” in his career!

Harvest ahead of schedule, yields good

By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer

The 2018 harvest is advancing quickly, well-ahead of the five year average across Saskatchewan. That is reflected locally too, although yields appear to depend greatly on the area a crop was grown. “So far quality and yields have been excellent,” said Norquay area farmer Jennifer Lindgren, who questioned her husband Jordan over coffee for this

article. In terms of specific crops; “wheat proteins are variable, canola looks decent but haven’t started combining it yet,” she reported. And counter to the provincial average this year, harvest is not running ahead of schedule in the Norquay area. “We are behind schedule here, behind our usual for sure,” said Lindgren. “Weather is playing a factor and not allowing the crop to dry down and stay dry.

2

“We are drying a lot of the grain.” Moisture, and in particular how much moisture, and when it arrived over the course of the growing season are always a factor in yields at harvest. Juanita Polegi is Executive Director of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, as well as farming with her husband in the Jedburgh area. She said the crops have been yielding better than might have been anticipated this year. “The early seeded cereals seem to be holding their own,” she said, adding there have been “surprisingly good yields con-

sidering the amount of moisture.” But, whether those yields will be maintained remains a question. There is “concern about how the later seeded canola will fare,” said Polegi. However, the area Polegi is most familiar with is following the provincial trend of being ahead of normal. The early harvest has been in part pushed by generally dry conditions, she said. “There is concern about the dry

Canola industry concerned about decision to phase out technology Recently, the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) released proposed decisions to phase out the outdoor use of clothianidin and thiamethoxam, two important products used by canola growers to prevent damage caused by flea beetles. “Sustainable production and science-based decisions about risk are the foundation of our industry,” says Brian Innes, vice president of public affairs for the Canola Council of Canada. “Today’s announcement is con-

cerning because these products are very important for our growers, and without viable alternatives, the ban will significantly impact the canola sector.” The canola industry continues to support PMRA’s science-based decision-making process. The canola industry relies on continued investment in agricultural innovation, which is facilitated by predictable and science-based regulatory approval processes. The proposed deci-

HARVEST Continued from Page A10 conditions,” she said, adding its impact could be more than crops being harvested now, with the concern including the effect dry conditions will have on pastures. “Cows are running out of grass, and the hay crop wasn’t very heavy so there is concern about feed supplies if we receive no fall moisture and it’s an early winter.” Mike Badowski, Vice President of Sales, at Pattison Agriculture in Yorkton said customers are in general indicating a solid harvest so far. “Customers are reporting average to above average yields, depending on location,” he said. “Most of our customers are very pleased with their crops this year.” And it doesn’t appear any one crop is doing better than another either. “No single crop is trending better than another,” said Badowski. “Crops are doing very well across the board.” Like Polegi, Badowski also reported harvest is moving forward at a good pace. “Harvest is definitely ahead of schedule this year,” he said. “Mother Nature has been very cooperative so far this year, which has our customers very happy. “Overall: 2018 has been a very good year. Customers are experiencing good results, and the weather has made for a relatively easy harvest.” Kevin Elmy of Friendly Acres Seed Farm south of Saltcoats said the early harvested crops have been surprising in a good way.

“We just got rolling on our spring seeded crops. Spring triticale is yielding OK considering the year,” he said. “Neighbours are taking off crops and are also surprised with the bushels they are harvesting. Seed sizes are smaller than normal. Quality so far is good.” But Elmy said there are some concerns looking forward. “The concern is going to be the later seeded crops and how they took the heat and dryness,” he said. Like Polegi’s concerns over the need for moisture moving forward for pasture and hay, Elmy said that will be a need for grain crops too. “Soil structure and water infiltration is going to start showing differences in fields unless we get a slow general rain through this fall,” he said. “The dry soils with poor structure and water infiltration will continue to be dry as the water will run off.” Elmy said land management can help. “By having good structure and high water infiltration, and moisture that hits the soil will soak in,” he said. “The vegetative map from the drone we had at the crop tour showed that the spring triticale was done with the majority of photosynthesis so we need to get more green growth in those fields this fall. The oat sector is seeing the same trend, said Scott Shiels, Grain Procurement Manager with Grain Millers Canada Corp. in Yorkton.

sions are of concern for the canola industry as a ban will reduce yield and increase the risks faced by growers. A study published in 2017 based on European growers’ experience without these products showed that growers faced an increased risk of insect damage, had lower yields and, as a result, seeded less canola. With more than 22 million acres of canola in Canada in 2018, banning these plant protection tools would have a dramatic impact. These products have been responsibly used

“Harvest definitely came on very quickly with the hot, dry weather and is well ahead of schedule across much of the province, and the Prairies,” he said. “So far, yields and quality are better than expected with the amount of rainfall we received this growing season, but will most likely be well below last year on the average.”

by canola producers as a seed treatment to control pests as part of their integrated pest management programs. Today’s decision is not related to bees. PMRA earlier determined that clothianidin and thiamethoxam do not pose a risk to pollinators, including honey bees, when used as a seed treatment on canola.

The Canola Council of Canada will thoroughly review today’s proposed decisions on clothianidin and thiamethoxam and will continue to actively contribute to the review process. The Canola Council of Canada is a full value chain organization representing canola growers, processors, life science

companies and exporters. Keep it Coming 2025 is the strategic plan to ensure the canola industry’s continued growth, demand, stability and success – achieving 52 bushels per acre to meet global market demand of 26 million metric tonnes by the year 2025. — Canola Council of Canada

Underwear can tell a soil’s story By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer

Kevin Elmy is burying his underwear in the fields of his Saltcoats area seed farm. Elmy’s efforts are part of an initiative being termed ‘Soil Your Undies’ Soil Conservation Council of Canada. The idea is to use the buried underwear as a simple way to gauge soil health, explained Elmy during a plot tour at his Friendly Acres Seed Farm Sunday. Using cotton underwear anyone can investigate biological activity in farm fields or even in backyard gardens. You bury the underwear in topsoil for about two months and then dig them up to check the level of decomposition, explained Elmy. If there’s not much left of the underwear you have good biological activity, which indicates healthy soil. These same soil organisms can break down plant materials in much the same way. Elmy said he heard of the idea from an Ontario farmer. “It was a soil health demo I heard about from Blake Vince,” he explained. Elmy, who is always

Kevin Elmy shows a pair of cotton underwear he buried in a farm fields to help track soil health. It was part of a farm demonstration on his farm this summer. intrigued by new farm innovations, said the simplicity of the test made it worth trying. “It’s a simple demo of putting cotton underwear in the soil,” he told Yorkton This Week. “Soil microbes will eat the underwear. More microbe activity more of the underwear will disappear.” The idea is actually

part of a broader initiative which was launched as part of National Soil Conservation Week. Through the campaign, the SCCC wants everyone who cares about soil health to bury a pair of cotton undergarments to witness firsthand the activity that happens right under our feet. All you need is a new pair of white 100 per cent

cotton briefs, a shovel, a marker flag and a patch of soil to bury your undies. “What better way to understand the inner workings of our soil than with your own easy-to-do soil science experiment,” said SCCC chair and Ontario farmer, Alan Kruszel in an online release. “Healthy soil is full of amazing, living organisms. It is what sustains us and is the foundation of a thriving civilization. In order to show just how important healthy soils are to Canadians, the

Council wants to pique the public’s interest with our Soil Your Undies initiative. We hope those who take part will share their experiences and their love for soil with us and their social networks.” So why is monitoring soil health important? Soil produces 95 per cent of the food we eat, detailed the SCCC. “Soil is a living breathing system that provides nutrients and water to crops as well as homes to billions of soil organisms,”

it detailed. “These organisms feed growing crops by turning dead plant material into useable nutrients. They also help create soil organic matter, which holds water and reduces the risk of soil erosion. Even though healthy soil is critical to the economic and environmental sustainability of the agri-food industry, it is increasingly under stress.” These stresses include: • the expansion of our cities and communities; • increased demands on soils to grow food for growing populations; • changes in cropping, tillage and other practices that can degrade soil health; and • increased frequency of extreme weather due to climate change, which can speed up soil degradation. The annual cost of soil degradation in Canada is estimated at over $3 billion each and every year, and this will only increase if nothing is done. While this was year one for Elmy, with only a couple of pairs of underwear buried in his plot trials, he sees enough value in the effort to expand the idea in 2019. “Next year we will have more around the farm,” he said, adding, “it may be like looking for Easter eggs with my memory.” A helpful step-by-step guide on how to properly Soil Your Undies is available at www.soilcc.ca.

Emotion part of harvest

Harvest is in full swing and that is rather a gratifying time for farmers, and a time that can be an apprehensive one as well. The gratification comes from the simple act of reaping what you have sown. In that regard farmers and city gardeners share a similar feeling I am sure. Both go out in the spring and plant seeds with the expectation of producing a crop. Through the ensuring months they tend their crops, hoeing weeds in a garden, spraying farm fields to protect crops for

a variety of pests. And both farmers and gardeners look to the skies each day tracking the weather. Will it rain when the crop needs moisture? Will the hail in the weather forecast pass by without damaging the crops? Will the severe heat hurt yields? While the gardener might overcome some of the issues weather throws at their garden, watering the peas and potatoes in times of drought for example, the farmer is much more at the whim of Mother Nature. And that is where apprehension comes into the equation for the

Agriculture THIS WEEK

Calvin Daniels farmer. Producing a crop today is big business. There are major expenses associated with planting wheat, canola, and peas; from the seed itself to fertilizers, crop protection products, machinery costs, fuel, insurance,

labour and the list goes on. Recouping the investment cost and realizing a profit at the end of the year comes down in large part to how many bushels are put in the bin at harvest. And while experienced farmers can look

at a field as it matures over the summer and have at least some reasonable expectation of what will be produced, it is never assured until the combine is heading down the field. In a year when production is likely to be variable, as is the case this year in many areas of the Canadian Prairies, it has to be stressful when a farmer starts to combine a field and the yield monitors confirm production levels that are likely to be insufficient to cover the cost of production. And yet the farmer still has to go round and round the field, tak-

ing what he can get, but knowing the cost of operating the combine, and of hauling the grain, won’t be recouped based on the field yield. It is a situation that farmers have always faced, a direct realization that a profit is unlikely, and that has to be a time of stress yet they continue to farm because it is their business of choice, in the process helping feed the world. It is something the rest of us should not lose sight of as we see farmers in the field this fall. Calvin Daniels is Editor of Yorkton This Week.

Agricultural Trade in the Age of Protectionism Cam Dahl, President of Cereals Canada The world has entered a new age of nationalism, resulting in growing trade protectionism and increasing barriers for Canadian farmers and exporters who depend on international markets. The idea that trade is about winning or losing is dangerous and misleading. This idea ignores the world’s growth over the last 75 years and the disastrous outcomes of “me first” economic policies that preceded trade liberalization. We cannot forget the prophetic words of former U.S. Secretary of State (and Nobel Laureate) Cordell Hull who noted “unhampered trade dovetails with peace; high tariffs, trade barriers, and unfair competition with war”. Secretary Hull would be disappointed with the current state of global affairs, particularly the retreat of leading nations from cooperative and rules-based systems. Canadian farmers see examples of growing protectionism every day, with tweets from the President of the United States, barriers to Canadian durum entering Italy, Saudi

Arabia banning Canadian wheat and barley, and countries using phytosanitary rules to block trade. Recent court and regulatory decisions in the European Union (EU) have the potential to severely limit accessibility to this market. The list of market access barriers seems to grow on a weekly basis. What can we do about it? We need our Government to rigorously enforce current trade agreements. A trade agreement is not worth much without enforcement. Since the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the European Union (EU) came into force, one of Canada’s largest exports to the EU, durum wheat, has virtually disappeared. Canadian farmers need our Government to assertively challenge the protectionist measures Italy is using to keep our durum out. A strong Canadian response is necessary to recover the Italian market and to prevent other protectionist countries from adopting Italy’s methods. We also need every part of government to consider the trade implications of policies and public statements. All agencies

and departments need to have an understanding of the importance of keeping markets open for Canadian exporters. This “trade lens” does not exist today. Some of our key

Howland Honey produces honey by the barrel.

The honey extraction unit.

The sweet business of honey

By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Honey is a very natural product, but there is still an extensive process to get it from the beehive to the consumer. Friday some 75 people, many visitors to the nearby Good Spirit Provincial Park, had an opportunity to get a closer look at the process by taking part in a tour of Howland’s Honey. Howland’s Honey is a third generation beekeeping operation situated one mile south of Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park. “Wink (Howland) founded the farm in 1976,” explained Danny Wasylenchuk, who now operates the farm with his wife Sasha, the daughter of the late Wink Howland. “He essentially bought it in ’76 and got a couple hives of bees as something to do in summer.” It wasn’t long before Wink was selling honey to a few people, and then to more people, and from there came more hives, and in time it became a business, said Wasylenchuk. Today, Howland’s Honey is a major producer of honey, with 1,000 honey producing hives, and another 600-800 nucleus hives, smaller units centred on a new queen. As for bees, Wasylenchuk said as an average for a healthy producing hive there are 60,000 bees. The bees collect nectar, which is turned into honey, over a large region of east central Saskatchewan. “We have our bees spread over a very large

area,” said Wasylenchuk, adding it goes to a few miles East of Highway #9, to west of Highway #47. The bees forage locally on the nectar of wildflowers, clover, alfalfa and canola. Wasylenchuk said canola is the key crop. “It’s probably the overwhelming majority of what’s available to bees in the province,” he said. It’s a case of finding a good area, and then permission from the farmer “to put bees there,” he said, adding typically a farmer is given honey in exchange for allowing

bees to be kept on the land. The provincial average has a hive producing 170-pounds of honey over the summer. “Our five-year average in 300,” said Wasylenchuk, adding it can range like grain production in farming with some years a hive hitting 400-pounds, to below the Saskatchewan average. “… It depends on the year.” So far Wasylenchuk said 2018 is looking to be a good year, but there are still a number of weeks of production ahead, and production can be affected

by the weather, with good moisture needed to produce the base nectar. “We start pulling boxes right around the 15th of July, and we’re probably taking the last boxes off the September long (weekend),” said Wasylenchuk. The boxes are sections of a hive the bees have filled with honey already. The boxes are taken to the main facility where the honey is extracted and packaged. Between field workers collecting boxes and staff in the processing facility Howland’s Honey employ about 13 in the summer season. “We have the capacity to go bigger … but right now it’s very comfortable,” said Wasylenchuk. Most of the honey goes out as a pure product although Howland’s Honey is doing a chocolate and a

cinnamon honey. “Variety is the spice of life,” offered Wasylenchuk with a smile. He said the flavoured products do give customers something different to try, but they are keeping it simple with such basic ingredients added to their honey.

“It’s something a little different to spread on your toast.” The honey is marketed through Costco stores in the province, a number of independent Co-ops, various farmers’ markets and other locations, said Wasylenchuk.

Honey bees are generally docile.

Back in time The Threshermen’s Show and Seniors’ Festival took attendees back through time, with a glimpse of agriculture in Saskatchewan a century ago. Highlights of the weekend included demonstrations of old farm equipment as well as a stooking competition. Staff Photos by Devin Wilger

PROTECTIONISM Continued from Page A14 make Canada less competitive despite the fact that they might be popular on the internet. This does not mean that the Government of Canada should back away from the fundamental principles of our country. Nor does this mean that regulatory agencies should favour commerce over rigorous science-based defense of Canadian’s health and of our environment. It does mean that decisions should be made with a clear understanding of the implications for Canadian

competitiveness and trade and that all possible steps have been taken to mitigate negative impacts. It is not all up to governments. Farmers and industry have a critical role to play in keeping our markets open. Protectionists are looking for any excuse to block trade. Producers need to ensure that the actions they take on their farm do not provide a pretext for trade barriers. Improper use of pesticides is one example of a practice that can jeopardize trade. All of our grain shipments are under

increased scrutiny for residues. These can occur when farmers don’t follow the label directions. For example, if glyphosate is applied to green cereal crops the seeds will carry residues. “Green” means anything above 30 percent moisture, when the seeds are still maturing. Improper fall application of glyphosate could provide the excuse to block Canadian exports. Farmers also need to be aware when new products don’t have approval in key export markets. Often

there is are zero-tolerance limits for unapproved residues in Canadian shipments, even though products have full approval in Canada. When this occurs farmers need to consciously make the decision to protect our export markets and avoid using the product. The other parts of the value chain, like crop input

suppliers and exporters, have a role to play as well. Suppliers should be aware of potential market access issues for new products. They should be reminding customers of the need to rigorously follow the label when applying products. ity

This is why commodassociations have

come together to launch the Keeping it Clean campaign. Farmers and suppliers can visit www. keepingitclean.ca to get up-to-date data on new products as well as information on products of particular concern. The industry really is a partnership in the effort to keep markets open.

facturers often recommend that certain fabrics be air-dried instead of dried in clothes dryers. But men and women can still air-dry clothes made from fabrics that are dryer-friendly, and doing so greatly reduces the energy consumed on laundry day. • Use the right detergent. Washing clothes in front-loading washing machines or high-efficiency top-loading machines is more eco-friendly, as such machines use less water than more traditional washers. The American Cleaning Institute notes that detergents designed specifically for highefficiency machines can ensure clothes are wellcleaned. • Separate certain items when drying clothes. Blue jeans and bath towels can take a long time to dry. When included among cotton T-shirts and other lightweight fabrics, jeans and towels can make it harder for these items to dry. This compels men and women to run their dryers for longer periods of time, thereby consuming more energy. Separate items when drying so lightweight clothing can dry as quickly as possible. If necessary, air-dry stubborn towels and jeans after drying them for a little while in the dryer. Doing laundry might not be the most engaging chore, but it can be ecofriendly.

Helpful guidelines for raising healthy children (NC) — We all want our kids to grow up to be happy and well-adjusted. Achieving this is a lifelong process that starts when they’re little. To help put your children on the path to success, follow these key tips.

that goes into a goal like making the soccer team or getting straight A’s. But this can put undue pressure on anyone, so make sure you have realistic expectations that involve trying their best, not being the best.

1. Encourage good habits. Whether they are two, 12 or 20, you can help them make good decisions to nurture their bodies and minds. Eating lots of fruit and veggies, maintaining a consistent bedtime and ensuring time for rest and relaxation are essential for people of all ages. Regular exercise and unstructured play for younger ones is also important.

3. Set the example. As a parent, you are the most significant role model for your child. This means whatever you do, they are likely to follow or at least file away as acceptable and appropriate behaviour. So, don’t be too hard on yourself, practice the good habits you want them to keep and model healthy relationships with friends and family.

2. Expect effort, not perfection. Some of us can easily become focused on results, without considering the time and energy

4. Teach them to give back. Compassion, empathy and gratitude are essential qualities for a well-rounded individual. Fortunately, there

are simple ways you can teach them to be grateful and give back, like by contributing to a charity.

A great organization that kids can relate to is Save the Children. In Canada, the charity believes all

Indigenous children have the right to develop their full potential as valued and engaged citizens

within their Nations and Canada. Learn more or make a donation at www. savethechildren.ca.

Tips to avoid running injuries (NC) — With today’s busy lifestyles, running is an affordable, convenient way to stay healthy. As more us make it part of our routine, health professionals are encouraging runners to pay close attention to their footwear. “Running shoes are a critical piece of equipment that novice runners often ignore,” explains Anthony Harper, a Canadian certified pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. “This oversight can result in painful overuse injuries including stress fractures, runner’s knee, heel pain and shin splints.”

Harper says today’s running shoes are the product of years of research and development and are specifically designed to provide support and cushion joints. But over time, the support and cushioning wear down. If you run frequently and far, train primarily on roads or have a heavier build, your running shoes will break down even faster. As your shoes wear, your ankles, knees, hips and back will have to absorb more and more of the impact. Overuse injuries develop slowly, from small tears to swelling to persistent

pain. Here’s how you can reduce your risk: Track your distance. Running shoes should be replaced every 600 to 800 kilometres If you wear your running shoes for other activities beyond running, that distance counts too. Be aware of new pains. If your feet, knees or hips start to hurt during your regular run it’s a good indication that the cushioning or supports in your shoes are worn down. Now is the time to start breaking in a new pair. Examine your shoes. Turn your shoes over and look at the wear patterns and see if any cracks are

forming. Also look carefully at the inside and outside of the shoes. If the treads and sides are visibly worn and the shoes don’t feel firm when you twist them, it’s time to get a new pair. Book a consultation. Canadian certified pedorthists have extensive knowledge in biomechanics and are footwear and foot orthotic experts. If you have uneven wear on your treads or are experiencing foot, ankle, knee or hip pain, they can advise you on whether foot orthotics or a different brand and style of footwear will help. Evidently, the habit of dropping in at mealtimes is common enough there to require a word to describe it. • The world’s most popular fruit is the banana. In the United States, people consume more bananas than apples and oranges put together. • How would you like to brush your teeth with salt, chalk or ground brick? The first tooth powders used with toothbrushes

were made of just such materials. • Ever wonder why magazine publisher Hugh Hefner chose a rabbit as the symbol of his Playboy magazine? Evidently, when the mogul was a small boy, one of his treasured possessions was a blanket with bunnies all over it. • Those who study such things say that Italians drink, on average, 26 gallons of wine every year.

• The English word “vegetable” comes from the Latin word “vegetare,” which means “to invigorate.” Thought for the Day: “I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of

every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.” — Kurt Freiherr von Hammerstein-Equord

The mall has more than 800 stores, 100 restaurants, three radio stations, two hotels, a full-size ice-skating rink, nightclubs and a chapel.

• On Sept. 19, 1995, The Washington Post publishes a 35,000-word manifesto written by the Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski. Since the late 1970s, Kaczynski had carried out bombings that killed three people and injured another 23. David Kaczynski realized the writing style was similar to that of his brother, Theodore, and notified the FBI.

Practices like this are just one more reason why I urge potential owners to adopt a pet from their local shelter, rather than shell out thousands of dollars to a pet shop. How to cozy up for the change in weather (NC) — Welcome crisp fall weather and the gorgeous colours with a few simple tips that will get you and your home ready for the season. Invest in warmth and light. Shorter and cooler days mean you’ll want to create an indoor refuge. Achieve a warm, friendly ambiance with a variety

of light fixtures, like wall sconces and string lights. Stock up on wood for the fireplace, which you can stack close by for a rustic cottage vibe. If you don’t have a fireplace, candles are a soothing alternative. Choose seasonal scents like apple spice, cedarwood and cinnamon. Prep your garage. Declutter this space for a

smooth transition to the cooler weather. Put away seasonal furniture and garden hoses, and break out the rake and other tools you’ll need for fall and winter. And don’t forget to tune-up and service your vehicle. Be sure to change your oil and oil filter regularly to prolong the life of the engine. Choose one that targets over 99

per cent of contaminants, like Fram Ultra which is engineered for use with synthetic oil. Update your greenery. Summer florals may be out, but there are plenty of plants that can thrive in fall. Look for low light, low maintenance options, like snake plants, which are budget-friendly and help reduce toxins in the

air. English ivy and Pothos boasting striking tendrils are other great ideas for cheering up your space. Outside, don’t forget to plant bulbs before the ground freezes; tulips, iris, daffodil and lily will bloom nicely in the spring. Prevent seasonal allergies. Give your home a deep cleaning and change out your furnace filter

to keep allergens at bay. It’s also important to take steps in your car, as contaminants can enter through the ventilation system and become concentrated, exposing passengers to higher levels of dust, dirt and allergens that outdoors. Be sure to change your cabin filter once a year or every 24,000 kilometres.

Simple tips to make your stuff last longer (NC) — We can all benefit from finding clever ways to stretch our dollars. One idea is to make the things you already own last longer, so you don’t have to replace them as often. Here are some smart ways to extend the life of everyday items: Your patio furniture. These outdoor items get a lot of wear and tear from summer entertaining and harsh weather, but it’s easy to make them last seasons longer. Make aluminum and wrought iron pieces look shiny again with a thin layer of car wax that you wipe clean with a cloth. For cushioned seat-

ing, clean spills with mild soap and water and a nonabrasive brush. Cover all furniture when you won’t use it for a while, and be sure to put it away before winter hits.

changes can go a long way toward prolonging the life your vehicle’s engine. Otherwise, the oil can become saturated with combustion by-products, creating sludge buildup

and harmful, heat-produced varnish. To realize the full benefits of synthetic oil, it should be paired with an equally premium oil filter. This newly improved filter has

an ultimate dual-layer synthetic media that captures over 99 per cent of contaminants and lasts up to 32,000 kilometres when paired with appropriate synthetic oil.

Your roof. Replacing your roof is a big expense, so it makes sense to take some preventative maintenance steps to ensure it lasts as long as possible. On a lower roof, blow leaves and moss away with a leaf blower so they don’t have a chance to deteriorate your shingles. For a higher roof, use a broom with extension pole to sweep them away.
