Q: As a Generation X’er, my favorite actor of all time is Jason Patric. I must have seen the movie “Lost Boys” 50 times because of him. I’ve lost track of his career over the years. Does he have anything new coming out in theaters? — S.J. A: Patric has always been reclusive. He didn’t appreciate the paparazzi following him during his high-profile romance with movie star Julia Roberts
decades ago. However, he never lost his love of acting and his resume continues to grow. Next up for Patric is the TV movie “The Girl in the Bathtub,” which is based on a true story and will premiere Sunday, Oct. 7, on the Lifetime network. In the thriller, Patric plays an attorney whose girlfriend, a young paralegal, is found dead of unnatural causes. It turns out she was dating three men in all, each becoming a suspect. The film also stars Australian actress Caitlin Stasey as the unfortunate victim in the title. Q: When did the new season of “The Last Ship”
start up on TNT? I can’t believe I missed the premiere. I’ve been too busy to realize the fall season has already started! — Deborah H., via email A: “The Last Ship” began its fifth season on
DEAR DR. ROACH: My boyfriend, who is in his 60s, got the recommended shingles shot a couple of years ago. Three weeks ago, he got a very bad case of shingles. It went from the front of his stomach, along the left side, to the middle of his spine. He has huge blisters, a red rash, pain and no appetite, and he constantly sleeps. The doctor put him on a regimen of valacyclovir. He was told to keep the area moist to avoid cracking and pulling of the blisters and rash. I thought that if you got the shingles shot, you wouldn’t get the shingles, or at least you’d get only a mild case. His has not been a mild case. The doctor told him that the shot just gives a false sense of
security. If so, why get the shot? — D.H. ANSWER: I disagree with his doctor; it isn’t a false sense of security so much as it’s an incomplete sense of security. No medical treatment is 100 percent effective, and that includes vaccines. Even the best vaccines don’t work on some people, or can’t be used, which is why having a large proportion of the population vaccinated is so critical for a really infectious disease, like measles. In the case of shingles, the vaccine prevents about 50 percent of shingles episodes from ever occurring, and it might keep others from being worse. (As an aside, it’s possible that your boyfriend’s case would have been even worse without the vaccine, but there’s no way of ever knowing for sure.) What might be the most important reason of all to get the vaccine is to prevent the dreaded complication of shingles — postherpetic neuralgia. The rate of post-herpetic neuralgia in vaccinated peo-
ple who still get shingles is 67 percent lower than in nonvaccinated people. It’s not a perfect vaccine, but it’s a lot better than no vaccine. Its downside is seldom more than a redness at the injection site or a sore arm, and it has never been shown to transmit the virus. Postherpetic neuralgia, on the other hand, can be exquisitely, disablingly painful and can last for months. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a twitching of my left eye. My face draws up when it happens. I went to a doctor and he gave me 15 Botox shots around my eye and said I will need them every three months. They help some. Can you tell me what it could be? — F.G. ANSWER: This is a special type of dystonia, a movement disorder, called blepharospasm (blef-arow-spasm). It’s an involuntary contracture of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which goes around the eye. Other muscles may be involved, giving your face the “drawn up” appearance. The botulinum toxin
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I decided my 10-year-old daughter was ready to have a pet after watching her interact with friends’ dogs and cats. When I asked her if she’d like to have a kitten, she said she would rather have a pet hamster. I’m surprised, as I thought she really liked taking care of cats. What are your thoughts? — Jared L. in Indianapolis DEAR JARED: There may be a couple of reasons why she asked for a much smaller pet. Perhaps, after experiencing different dogs and cats, she decid-
ed she doesn’t want the responsibility of caring for a bigger pet. Or, she may think that asking for a smaller, less costly pet would make you happy. That said, having a hamster for a pet can be very rewarding. They do require quite a bit of care — their cages must be cleaned regularly, they must have the right balance of nutrients in their food, and they react badly to temperature changes and other stressors. As long as she does the research and is ready for the responsibility of caring for a pocket pet, she should do fine. In fact, kids today may be gravitating toward pocket pets rather than larger pets. A survey by RightPet found that children ages 10 to 17 preferred a pet rat
to a dog or cat (cats were second, followed by dogs). The survey didn’t investigate why so many kids were into rats. (Though I’m sure parents who were dreading being asked for a pony are breathing a sigh of relief.) Your daughter may be following a trend toward owning a pocket pet, or maybe just would like a smaller pet. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Eric Dane in “The Last Ship”
Sept. 9 on the TNT network. In the season finale of the fourth season, Chandler (Eric Dane) confronted his enemy in a final showdown. By now you’ve missed only two or three episodes, so you still have time to catch up. Visit www.tntdrama/apps to peruse the many platforms that carry the actionpacked drama. The season is expected to conclude Nov. 11. Q: Is it true that Drake had an affair with Kim Kardashian, or did he just write a song about her for publicity? I’m inclined to believe the latter. — Dawn V., via email A: Only Drake and
Kim know if they’ve ever become intimately acquainted, but fans sure are speculating. In his new song “In My Feelings,” Drake sings about someone named Kiki and asks if she loves him. Kiki is one of Kim Kardashian’s nicknames, so tongues were wagging after the video came out. However, Kim has flatly denied any romantic connection with Drake. The rapper has either dated or had crushes on several high-profile women. He professed his love to Rihanna on stage when he accepted the VMA Vanguard Award two years ago. Rihanna later
told an interviewer that she felt uncomfortable with the public display of affection and that the two aren’t even friends anymore. Drake also reportedly dated tennis superstar Serena Williams, but she claims he was more like a brother to her. He also publicly announced his crush for ESPN reporter Doris Burke by wearing a sweatshirt with her face on it to an NBA game.
the doctor injects you with partially paralyzes the muscle, preventing the spasms, but the toxin wears off. The condition is common, but in most cases is mild enough or intermittent enough that such powerful treatments aren’t needed. In a few cases,
surgery is required. You can get more information about blepharospasm and other dystonias at www.dystonia-foundation.org. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them
in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
So the question is, is Drake a shrewd marketer or a misunderstood romantic? You decide. Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com!

Weather impacts progress of harvest Favourable weather for most of the province allowed producers to continue to make good progress in the field, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Fifty-eight per cent of the crop is now in the bin, well ahead of the five-year (2013-2017) average of 37 per cent for this time of year. Twenty-eight per cent of the crop is now swathed or ready to straight-cut. Rain showers toward the end of the week slowed down field progress, particularly in the eastern and northern regions, where the majority of the rain was recorded. Harvest is most advanced in the southwest region, where 82 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeast region has 77 per cent combined, the west-central 53
per cent and the east-central region has 49 per cent combined. The northeast region has 27 per cent combined while the northwest region has 16 per cent combined. Ninety-six per cent of lentils, 94 per cent of field peas, 73 per cent of durum, 46 per cent of spring wheat, 38 per cent of canola, and 14 per cent of flax and soybeans have now been combined. Sixty per cent of durum is estimated to grade 1CW, while 34 and six per cent is estimated to grade 2CW and 3CW, respectively. Fifty per cent of the pea crop is estimated to fall in the 1 CAN grade, while 46 and four per cent are estimated to grade 2 CAN and 3 CAN, respectively. Fortysix per cent of the lentils are estimated to grade 1 CAN, while 49 and five per cent is predicted to fall in
the 2 CAN and 3 CAN category, respectively. Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 25 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and 35 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 20 per cent

SaskEnergy is looking to award 20 Saskatchewan organizations $1000 each in grants, along with $2500 for the two most outstanding applications. Organizations can use the grant funding to complete their own specialized projects to assist people with winter weather. Yorkton businesses are eligible for the grants. They can apply at http:// www.saskenergy.com/community/Sponsorships.asp. The application deadline is Sept. 28. Successful candidates will be informed by Oct. 2.

“Ocean’s 8” (PG-13) — The Ocean crime serial gets another installment, this one a twist, chockablock with ladies, headed by Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), sister of the late Danny Ocean. Fresh out of prison, Debbie assembles a team of highly capable chicks to execute a brilliant plan: Their target is an uncommonly expensive necklace that rarely
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The changing season brings new experiences as well as challenges for the ever-adventurous Aries. Your social life expands, as do the opportunities at your workplace. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That recent period of uncertainty has passed. You now can now feel more confident about making decisions, especially those that relate to an important personal relationship. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you might be faced with a number of tasks on your to-do list, try to take time out to enjoy the arts. Music, especially, can be soothing to the sensitive soul of a Gemini. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A disagreement with a colleague or friend is best resolved with open and frank discussion. Trying to force the other party to see things your way is bound to backfire. LEO (July 23 to August 22) That Leonine pride might be ruffled by a colleague’s challenge to one of your pet ideas. But stop growling and listen. You
has seen the light of day, and they’ll have just hours to access it at a Met gala where it’s being watched every second. It’s just as heisty and cool as the others in this series, filled with tech and tricks and a plan with many moving parts. The ensemble includes: Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina, the tiny Asian comedian and rapper, as a squirrelly street magician/hustler. “Hearts Beat Loud” (PG13) — In this sweet, funny, music-laced drama, Nick Offerman (of “Parks and Rec” fame) and newcomer

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone in authority might decide to select you as a candidate for a project that carries more responsibilities. Be prepared to show why you’re the right choice for the job. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) That new workplace problem should be dealt with as soon as possible. Leaving it unresolved for too long could lead to an even more unsettling and time-consuming situation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some fancy juggling to keep both your work responsibilities and personal obligations on track. But ultimately, you’ll work it all out, as you always do. SAGITTARIUS
Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett in “Ocean’s 8” Kiersey Clemons star as Frank and Sam, a fatherdaughter duo who record (November 22 to December 21) You might hear some upsetting things about a situation in your life. But don’t be swayed by talk. Demand proof before making any decisions on the matter. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Don’t risk depleting those precious energy levels by taking on more tasks than you can realistically handle. Also, remember to ask for help when you need it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It might be difficult for the Aquarian who is used to giving advice to take counsel when offered. But it’s a good idea to listen to what trusted friends feel you should know. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Things might be a little unsettled as you move through a period of reassessment. But once you get your priorities sorted out, you should be ready to tackle an important decision. After their jam-session-turned-viralhit, Frank must confront a sobering role as a parent — to let go — while the serious Sam entertains thoughts of straying from her med-school path. “Superfly” (R) — Famed music video director Director X takes on the blaxploitation genre in the updated reimagining of “Superfly.” Set in Atlanta and starring Trevor Jackson in the central role, “Superfly” follows the story of Youngblood Priest, picked at a young age by mentor Scatter (Michael Kenneth Williams) to grow a cocaine empire and bring the drug game in to the 21st century -- that is, until a rival gang called Snow Patrol and a hood named Juju (Kaalan “KR” Walker) threaten to muscle Priest out. He sets his sights on one final score to get out of the game. What it lacks in a compelling sto-
ryline is made up for with superb styling. “Distorted” (R) — What happens when the perfect apartment is out to get you? Christina Ricci stars as Lauren, who moves into a luxury apartment facility called The Pinnacle with her husband. All the amenities a modern family could ask for, including subliminal messages in the high-tech walls and full surveillance at every turn. If a canvasser came across one of the paid “homeless” decoys, that decoy went home. The decoys were, essentially, a check to see how well the canvassers

teachers,” says retired nurse Rachel Olson, who spends several afternoons a week with granddaughter Kassidy Palmberg, 8, and her 7-year-old brother Kaleb. After-school time is prime time for school-age kids. Like that commute when adults switch gears from the end of their workday to home life, it’s a transition period in a busy day. Even if it’s just a 30-minute break between getting off the school bus and leaving for a piano lesson, kids can recharge with a healthy snack (they are notoriously famished) and an impromptu game or two. Many of the day’s special learning opportunities happen in relaxed after-school downtime. Parents, grandparents and caregivers are important
PENNE WITH SPINACH, BACON AND MUSHROOMS •1 box penne •10 slices bacon •1 medium onion •1 package sliced mushrooms •2 cloves garlic •1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes •1 package fresh baby spinach •Grated Parmesan Cook pasta as package directs. Meanwhile, cook bacon in a large, deep nonstick skillet over medium heat until browned. Remove bacon to paper towels to drain. Remove all but 2 tablespoons fat from skillet. Add onion and mushrooms to skillet; saute 5 minutes until onion is golden. Add garlic and red pepper flakes; cook 30 seconds until fragrant. Add spinach; cover and cook, stirring occasionally, 2 minutes until wilted. Drain pasta, reserving 1 cup pasta water. Add pasta to skillet with some of the reserved pasta water; toss. Add more water as neces-
“We have so much fun together!” adds Kassidy, as she licks a giant smoothie pop that Rachel prepared that morning in a blender with fresh fruit, yogurt, ice and coconut milk. (Poured into plastic drinking glasses, she inserts spoons for handles and freezes them. When the kids arrive, they remove them from the cup and enjoy licking them on a hot afternoon. As the smoothie pop begins to melt, the kids can insert it back in the cup, smoosh it around and eat the remaining slushy goodness with the spoon.) As they enjoy the cool treat, Rachel says, “Let’s play ‘guess the animal!’”

“I’m thinking of one,” says Kaleb, to get the word game going. Everyone tosses out questions and he responds. “Is it furry?” “Yes.” “Is it a caterpillar?” “No.” “Is it alive, or a fantasy animal like a unicorn?” “Alive.” “Is it a pet, like a cat or a hamster?” “No.” “Does it live on a farm?” “No.” “In Africa?” “Yes.” “Is it a lion?” “YES!” Here are more downtime ideas: SNACKS: Have a variety of healthy choices on hand, such as popcorn, nuts or pretzel sticks for edible kabob skewers. Kids can poke bite-size chunks of cheese and fresh fruit onto each stick.
TALK TIME: Chat about their day as well as your own. Relaxed, shared time with caring adults is important for building trust and reinforcing values.

Add tomatoes and their juices, cover and cook 3 minutes or until eggplant is tender. Add to drained pasta along with basil. No need to skip baking - go gluten free Millions of people across the globe adhere to a gluten-free diet. While gluten must be avoided by people who have been diagnosed with Celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder affecting the small intestines, roughly 70 percent of the people who have adopted gluten-free diets do not have the disease. Where there once was a dearth of gluten-free foods just a few years ago, today many mainstream retailers have entire aisles filled with glutenfree offerings. And people who used to eschew various baked goods, including breads and desserts, now have many options at their disposal. A gluten-free diet requires avoiding flours made from wheat, barley and rye. In such instances, people can choose from flours made from rice, tapioca starch or potato starch. Some carefully tested and blended flours use a combination of various flours to produce just the right consistency. For those who desire a traditional golden cake, try this recipe for “GlutenFree Yellow Cake” courtesy of King Arthur Flour. GLUTEN-FREE YELLOW CAKE Yield: Two 9” cake rounds •2-1⁄4 cups Gluten-Free Flour or brown rice flour blend •1 teaspoon xanthan gum •2 tablespoons gluten-free Cake Enhancer (optional) •1-3⁄4 cups sugar •16 tablespoons (1 cup) soft butter •1 teaspoon salt •2-1⁄2 teaspoons baking powder •1 tablespoon glutenfree vanilla extract •4 large eggs •1 cup milk, at room temperature Preheat the oven to 350 F. Lightly grease two 9-inch round cake pans. Whisk together the flour or flour blend, xanthan gum and Cake Enhancer,

if using. In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the sugar, soft butter, salt, baking powder, and vanilla for 45 seconds at medium-high speed, until smooth. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl. Still using the mixer, beat in
the eggs one at a time; the mixture should become quite fluffy. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl again. Continuing to use the mixer, mix in the milk, at low speed, alternately with the dry ingredients, adding about 1⁄3 of each at a time, and ending with the
dry ingredients. The batter will look curdled after the milk addition; that’s okay, it will come back together once the final addition of flour has been mixed in for 30 to 45 seconds. Scoop the batter into the prepared pans. Bake the cake for about 32 to 36 minutes, about 3 to 4 min-
utes past the point where the cake springs back when touched lightly in the center, and a cake tester (or toothpick) inserted into the middle comes out clean. The finished cake’s internal temperature should be 210 F. Remove from the oven, and cool for 5 to 10 minutes
before turning out of the pan to cool on a rack. Top with desired frosting, berries, whipped cream, or caramel drizzle. Note: You must use a stand mixer or electric hand mixer to prepare the batter. Mixing by hand will not do a thorough enough job.

HOLLYWOOD — “Black Swan” Oscar-winner Natalie Portman will play twin sisters Abigail Van Buren (aka “Dear Abby”) and Ann Landers, who both wrote newspaper columns answering letters giving advice to their readers. She’s also directing the as-yet-untitled film. In addition to the just-released music drama “Vox Lux,” with Jude Law, and “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan,” with Kit Harington, Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates (due Sept. 10), Portman currently is shooting “Pale Blue Dot,” with Jon Hamm and Dan Stevens. Tom Hanks is before the cameras shooting “You Are My Friend,” with “The Americans” star Matthew Rhys, and the World War II film “Greyhound,” based on the book “The Good Shepard,” with Elisabeth Shue, for a March 19 release. Hanks also will lend his voice to “Toy Story 4,” for a June 21 premiere. Alec Baldwin, Mandy Patinkin, Mike Colter and Tim Daly are set for the indie film “Stupid Happy,” about sisters who learn the

Judith Light, Emmy-winning star of “One Life to Live,” plays the mother. “Dora the Explorer” soon will hit the big screen. The live-action film stars Isabela Moner of Nickelodeon’s “100 Things to Do Before High School,” alongside Eva Longoria and Michael Pena. The 17-year-old was Izabella in “Transformers: The Last Knight” (2017), along with “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” (2018) and the upcoming Mark Wahlberg/Rose Byrne starrer “Instant Family,” along with Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer. A ringer for Mel Gibson is coming on strong in films. Mel’s look-alike is his 28-year-old son, had lived on a ranch. Autry was one of America’s most popular movie stars in the 1930s and ‘40s, appearing in almost 100 films.

Milo has just completed the football sports drama “Brother’s Keeper” and is shooting “The Outpost,” his third film with top-star billing. Outside of “Hacksaw Ridge,” he’s done all of this without the help of his father. Ann-Margret pulled out of several movie projects due to the illness of her husband, Roger Smith, who passed away in June 2017 at 84, but is finally back making films. Turmeric has “spiced up” the news over the past few years! It’s a unique ingredient with an ancient history. Turmeric is thought to have originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It’s also a common ingredient in Chinese medicine and is the centerpiece of Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medicine. Turmeric is a spice present in nearly every Indian curry dish, and its flavor is best described as earthy. Indians also use turmeric in pre-wedding rituals and apply it to their face as a mask. Marco Polo was introduced to turmeric on his journey to China in 1280. Since then it’s been hailed as the poor man’s saffron. However, the only thing the spices have in common is their bright color. Turmeric is the root of the curcuma longa plant. The root’s flesh has an intense orange color that becomes yellow when dried. Turmeric gives ballpark mustard its bright yellow shade and also is used as a textile dye. Curcumin, the compound responsible for turmeric’s vibrant yellow pigment, is believed to have anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant properties, according to early findings from animal and lab studies. It’s often used as a natural remedy for joint pain. It’s also well known for its antiseptic properties and is commonly applied to wounds. Research shows turmeric may be effective for relieving an upset stomach and for reducing osteoarthritis pain. In some studies, the effectiveness of the spice compared favorably with that reported for pharmaceuticals, according to a National Institutes of Health report. “Turmeric’s benefits are attributed to its antiinflammatory and antioxidant action,” said Dr.
Pam Duitsman, nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension. “The best news is that turmeric is a spice that can accomplish its health-promoting work with virtually no adverse side effects. It is easy to reap the health benefits of turmeric by cooking with it, rather than taking it as a supplement.” I’ve enjoyed finding ways to use this beautiful golden spice in my daily recipes. I love the intense color and flavors that result when I add a 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and some lemon pepper to my scrambled eggs. No matter what the weather looks like outside, it’s always sunny in my kitchen! I’ve also added turmeric to the variety of spices I mix together to season meats and vegetables. Use turmeric sparingly, as it can impart a medicinal flavor to food when used in large quantities. That’s why some chefs warn that “you should see it but not taste it.” Typically, most recipes recommend combining turmeric with black pepper. Black pepper contains a compound called piperine, which inhibits the metabolic breakdown of turmeric in the gut and the liver. This allows higher levels of turmeric compounds to remain in the body (i.e., it increases its bioavailability), which

may increase the effects of turmeric. However, it also can affect the breakdown of other compounds, including certain drugs. If you’re unsure about how combining turmeric and black pepper will affect your prescription medicines, consult your doctor. Turmeric is the star of this spice blend and adds a burst of flavor to my recipe for Spiced Golden Milk. You also may want to add

Things people with diabetes need to watch for (NC) — When most of us think about diabetes, feet don’t immediately come to mind. However, foot experts say looking after your feet and lower limbs should be a priority if you are living with the condition. “Over time, diabetes can cause damage to the
It’s time to simplify living with COPD (NC) — Data collected between 2000-2001 and 2012-2013, notes that the number of Canadians aged 35 years and older living with COPD has almost doubled. In 20122013, there were over two million people living with this progressive lung disease. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) most commonly affects people over 35 years old who have had long term exposure to lung irritants. For anyone living with COPD, preventing lung attacks is critical. During a lung attack, existing COPD symptoms get worse, or new symptoms can develop. Breathing becomes extremely difficult, mucus becomes plentiful and a persistent cough seems impossible to shake. The good news is that COPD can be managed, and the likelihood of getting an energy-draining lung attacks can be reduced by using medication regularly. When lung attacks start to happen more frequently, individuals living with COPD may begin to feel increasingly isolated. Lung attacks can make it difficult to socialize and work. They may result in hospitalization and can leave patients feeling as though they have lost independence because they are unable to do what they love, or go where they like. It can be discouraging to need to use multiple inhalers and medications to be able to breathe each day. However, treatments are available that may make living with COPD simpler. Living with fewer symptoms means you may be more physically active, breathe better, and be able to socialize with friends and family over the holidays. Better managed COPD could mean going outside in both hot or cold weather and being able to live life without having to worry about being able to breath. If you, or someone you love, struggles with COPD, now is the best time to talk to a doctor about finding a simplified approach to help manage your medications and breathe easier every day.
can quickly develop into deep sores that are slow and difficult to heal. Foot ulcers can easily become infected, and in some cases lead to an amputation if they aren’t caught and treated early. As a healthcare professional specializing in foot care, Harper counsels many people living with diabetes about foot care and ulcer prevention. Here are his top tips: Dry skin. This is a common problem if you have diabetes. Although it doesn’t appear serious, dry, brittle skin cracks
nerves in the feet, which makes it difficult to feel if cuts or blisters are forming,” explains Anthony Harper, a Canadian certified pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. “Diabetes can also cause blood vessels in the feet and lower limbs to become constricted, which makes it much more difficult for infections and wounds to heal.” Common foot problems such as calluses, corns, blisters and dry skin can become a serious issue if you have diabetes, as they
easily, allowing bacteria to enter which can lead to infections. To keep the skin on your feet soft, use a moisturizing lotion daily. But don’t put lotion between your toes, as that area is susceptible to fungal infections. Check your feet daily for cracks. Corns and calluses. Wearing poorly fitting shoes can cause both corns and calluses to form. After your bath or shower, gently remove the excess tissue with a pumice stone. Do not try to cut it off. Speak to your pedorthist about whether foot orthotics or
a different brand or size of footwear will reduce the rubbing and shift weight off sensitive areas. Blisters. Ill-fitting shoes can also cause blisters to form. Always wear socks with your shoes and pull them up to make sure there aren’t any wrinkles or bumps. If you get a blister, do not pop it. Clean and dry it carefully, apply an antiseptic ointment and a clean bandage. Preventative care. When it comes to diabetes, prevention is best. Wash your feet daily in warm water, but do not soak them. Dry
them thoroughly. Check your feet daily for cuts, rubs, redness or any signs of injury. To avoid ingrown toe nails that can lead to infection, trim your toenails straight across. Always wear properly fitted, closed toe shoes inside and outside. Before putting on your shoes, check them carefully to make sure they don’t contain any little twigs or stones. Have your feet examined annually by a Canadian certified Pedorthist or your doctor. Find more information online at pedorthic.ca.
