DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you heard of the 64-slice test for your heart? Would you recommend it instead of a stress test? —

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A bid for you to step in and take over an incomplete project could prove to be an excellent learning experience that you can take with you when a new opportunity opens up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for socializing, both with family and with friends. Your aspects also favor developing new relationships, any or all of which might become especially meaningful. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your success in handling a recent difficult situation prompts a request to handle another workplace problem. But this is one you should accept only if you get all of the relevant facts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) New information about a past decision raises some unsettling questions from an old friend. Be prepared to explain your actions fully and, if necessary, make adjustments. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is not a good time to share personal secrets, even with someone you’ve known for a long while. What you don’t reveal now won’t come back to haunt you later. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Pushing yourself to meet a project deadline is admirable. But

D.F. ANSWER: You’re asking about a CT scan of the heart. The use of multiple detectors allows the CT scan to get a very highresolution picture of the heart very quickly. Modern 64-slice detectors can construct an entire 3-D image of the heart in five seconds under optimal conditions. The scan is excellent at detecting calcium in the arteries, which is imperfectly correlated with

be careful not to leave out important details in your rush to complete your work and send it off. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch that you don’t take on more than you can handle when offering to help someone with a personal problem. There might be hidden factors you weren’t told about. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That major move you’ve been considering could come sooner than you expected. Make sure you’ll be ready with the facts you need when decision time arrives. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Languishing relationships can benefit from a break in routine. Get out of the rut and do something new and maybe more than a little unpredictable this weekend. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Although you don’t think of yourself as a role model, your ability to make a tough decision at this time sets an example for others, who admire your courage. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You need to move any remaining obstacles out of your way before you can take on a new challenge. Seek advice from close, trusted friends and associates. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A career change

blockages in the arteries. However, by adding intravenous dye, blockages in the arteries can be detected with accuracy approaching that of a cardiac angiogram. Thus, for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, a heart CT scan can provide information similar to a stress test. However, a stress test gives information not only on anatomy, such as blockages, but on physiology as well. By measuring appears increasingly likely to happen during the next several weeks. It’s a good idea to start now to prepare, so you can be ready to make the move when the time comes. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a strong sense of obligation to justice, which inspires others to follow your example and do the right thing.

Starting at around $75,000, the Model S can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds and its 100 kWh battery allows it to run 315 miles before needing to be recharged.

Cure might not be possible, but a good quality of life for months or years is possible (half of women with metastatic breast cancer will live longer than two years). The exact treatment depends on the pathology and receptor status of the cancer, and a plan needs to be individualized by an experienced oncologist.

Did you know? The most popular electric car model of 2018 is the BAIC EC-Series. Manufactured in China, the BAIC EC-Series sold more than 15,000 units in January and February of 2018, unseating the Nissan Leaf as the most popular electric car across the globe. However, the Leaf remains popular, as electric car buyers made it the second most popular electric car model in the world in the first few months of 2018. The Leaf also remains the best-selling electric car in the world since it was first introduced in 2010, a function of its performance as well as its widespread avail-

the amount of time someone can exercise, and the response of the heart rate to that exercise, the cardiologist can gain useful prognostic information, which is impossible to glean from an anatomic test like a CT scan or even a cardiac catheterization and angiogram. The two tests are complementary, and we often obtain both. So, it really depends on the goals of the stress test as to which is preferred. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have breast cancer that has metastasized to my bones. I know that there have been great strides in curing cancer at the original site but there doesn’t seem to be any work done to help when it has spread. Are you aware of any? I am 87 years old. — L.L. Busy summer raising money for the lab By Ross Fisher The Health Foundation had a busy summer with a number of events that were very well attended. These events raised funds toward the equipment needed for the Yorkton Regional Hospital lab. Why is Lab Equipment Important Lab tests are a fundamental part of modern healthcare. Lab tests will often be the first indication if something is wrong, or needs to be looked into. The Yorkton lab is extremely busy; last year 332,241 tests and procedures were conducted. The Yorkton lab does the 4th highest number of tests and procedures in the province and they need state-of-the-art equipment in

the lab to do the best job possible you and your family. We are raising money to upgrade some of the current equipment and also to put in place a completely new piece of equipment that will provide a new service. This equipment is called a digital microscopy system. Currently, if one of our lab technologists sees something suspicious, like cancerous cells, we package up a sample and send it off to a specialist in Regina. With the new equipment we won’t have to do that because the digital system will allow a specialist in Regina to look at the blood sample at the same time as our local lab technologist. It will mean we don’t have to send out those samples anymore, it will speed up diagnosis. The equipment has other benefits: it will allow the view of the sample to be put on a large monitor so it

is easier to see; it has computer assisted diagnosis which should increase accuracy of diagnosis, and it will increase the number of tests that can done daily. It is a very good piece of equipment for our lab and will make a difference in our local healthcare. Gala Evening in Yorkton The Health Foundation’s annual Gala night is coming up on October 20th at St. Mary’s Cultural Centre. This fabulous evening features a wonderful meal from St. Mary’s, exquisite decorations, and a live band to keep you dancing all night. There is also a silent auction with a wonderful array of items donated by our business community. Gala is a big part of our annual fundraising. Please call the office at 786-0506 for your tickets.

Wet and cool weather slowing harvest Wet and cool weather continues to slow harvest operations in much of the province, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Seventy-three per cent of the crop is now in the bin, slightly behind the five-year (2013-17) average of 78 per cent for this time of year. Twenty per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut. Frequent snow and rain have delayed progress in many areas, and fields remain wet. Warm, dry and windy days are needed soon to allow producers to return to the field. Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 90 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeastern

region has 89 per cent combined, the westcentral region 62 per cent and the eastcentral region 61 per cent. The northeastern region has 45 per cent combined, while the northwestern region has 33 per cent combined. Eighty-four per cent of durum, 78 per cent of barley, 76 per cent of mustard, 58 per cent of spring wheat, 52 per cent of canola, 33 per cent of flax and 29 per cent of soybeans have now been combined. Many crops are coming off tough and are being placed into aeration bins and dryers. Topsoil moisture conditions continue to improve with the recent rain and snow. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as

three per cent surplus, 64 per cent adequate, 27 per cent short and six per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 51 per cent adequate, 34 per cent short and 14 per cent very short. Yield estimates at this time remain about average overall, although they vary greatly across the province depending on the moisture received throughout the season. Spring wheat grades at this time are being reported as 54 per cent 1 CW, 25 per cent 2 CW, 17 per cent 3 CW and four per cent CW Feed. The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lodging from snow and rain. Crop quality has been affected by

the recent moisture and downgrading is expected at the elevator. SaskPower reports that there were three cases of farm machinery coming into contact with electrical equipment last week, bringing the total for September to 13. SaskPower reminds producers to take the time to identify overhead power lines and to plan ahead when moving equipment. More safety information is available at www.saskpower.com/safety. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at http:// www.saskatchewan.ca/crop-report. Follow the 2018 Crop Report on Twitter at @SKAgriculture.

Saskatchewan’s population keeps growing Saskatchewan’s population continues to grow, reaching 1,162,062 people as of July 1, 2018 according to new figures released today by Statistics Canada. That’s an increase of 3,226 people in the past quarter and 11,280 people in the past year. The new population figure is slightly lower than previous estimates from Statistics Canada due to the post-census revision

that is done every five years. The revised population estimates still show that Saskatchewan’s population has grown in every quarter for the past 49 consecutive quarters, the longest period of sustained growth since quarterly records were first kept beginning in 1971. “Saskatchewan’s population has grown for more than 49 consecutive quarters, showing

that our province is the place to be to live, work and to raise a family,” Immigration and Career Minister Jeremy Harrison

said. “Newcomers to Saskatchewan are adding to the strength of our province and contributing to our growing economy.”

“The First Purge” (R) — As has been established in the first three films in this series, the Purge is a horrific (or hedonistic) annual set-aside of 12 hours during which all actions are decriminalized. This fourth installment, an origin story, might be the most gruesome or uncomfortable of the lot. The New Founding Fathers of America have overtaken the country post-revolution, and Dr. May Updale (Marisa Tomei) announces her experiment: allow the population to exorcise their demons this one night, so that the crime rate will stay low the rest of the year. Stay in your homes, and you get paid. Participate, and you get creepy contact lenses to broadcast your actions. Drug dealer Dmitri (Y’lan Noel), who stays behind to protect his stash, and

Director Tim Wardle takes us on a journey with these men — David Kellman, Eddy Galland and Bobby Shafran — who were unknowingly the subjects of a lifelong study in personality development and the debate over nature versus nurture, each being adopted at birth into similar family structures at deliberately different socio-economic strata. It’s an informative, intriguing and very welldone documentary.

Minnesotans think of themselves as not being particularly boastful. But fall is in the air, and one exception is when it comes to the humorous question, “How do you like them apples?” We love them, and we take pride in the fact that the popular Honeycrisp was developed in our state years ago. Now, the latest addition to this romance with new apple varieties is First Kiss. A child of the Honeycrisp family, and developed by the University of Minnesota, it was promoted as the “first kiss of autumn” at the Minnesota State Fair this summer. Eager to grab a taste, I stood in a long line at the apple booth to buy one. It was worth the wait. I took a bite and thought, “Whoa ... this IS an exceptional apple!” Would friends and family agree? A First Kiss taste test with other favorite varieties would answer that question. So I put together this entertaining

apple-tasting game. First, I purchased six varieties of apples, both to compare with First Kiss and to match apple names with tastes. Cut into bite-size chunks, I set the apples on separate plates numbered 1-7. (I kept track on my hidden “answer key.”) For reference, I listed the names of the seven apples in alphabetical order on a sheet for all to see. To play, the “testers” wrote numbers 1-7 on an index card. They tasted samples on each plate and wrote what they thought was its correct name next to the corresponding number on the card. For extra fun, I asked them to star their favorite. This was a tough assignment! Even though the participants have been chomping on apples for years, comparing apples to apples revealed subtle differences — a challenge indeed! Not surprisingly, First Kiss was a hit.

HOLLYWOOD — In 1960 I met an actor at the stage door of “Little Moon of Alban,” which starred Julie Harris. He was so new that he was shocked I’d want an autograph or to take a picture of him. I next waited to take pictures at the stage door of his play “Barefoot in the Park.” He once asked, “Why do you take so many

pictures of me?” and I told him, “You’re going to Hollywood to become a big movie star!” At a press conference for “All the President’s Men” in 1976 at Warner Brothers Studio, he stood with Dustin Hoffman answering questions. He kept staring at me, and my mother (visiting me then) said, “He keeps looking

Last week I wrote about reboots and remakes, but I’m not the only one worried about the lack of original creativity today in films and TV. My post on Steven’s remake of ‘West Side Story’ has reached epic comments. He will do what he will do. That is a fact. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Whenever our dog

“Champ” starts barking, my husband barks back at him. I know he’s doing it as a joke, but Champ keeps barking right through it. I think it’s teaching our puppy bad habits. — Sara Y., via email DEAR SARA: Your husband’s “barking” sends a mixed signal to Champ, and the last thing you

want to do when trying to conduct behavioral training with a dog is to be unclear about your commands. First off, it’s just making noise, and Champ probably barks more so he can be heard over hubby’s barking. Unchecked, Champ’s barking could go from slightly annoying to downright aggravating.

Learn about the causes of adult hearing loss

— click the trainer twice as he takes the treat and say “Shush” (or Quiet, or whatever command you want to use). Repeat this each time he starts barking. When you notice that he stops barking for longer periods after the treat-double click, phase out the treats but keep using the “one click for speak, two clicks for shush” pattern. Once he begins associating the

clicks with speaking or shushing, phase out the clicker and use just the verbal commands instead. You and your husband both should work with Champ, so that he responds to verbal commands from both of you. And nix the “just kidding” bark. Professional is working at heights and when Q: What should I be wearing a harness? A:

Protection against Falling located in The Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations under section 116 (2) provides employers or contractors with some guidance on working at heights. Employers and contractors shall ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a temporary or permanent work area when: a worker may fall 3 meters (9.84 feet) or more: or there is a possibility of injury if a worker falls less than 3 meters. This section is simply asking for us to conduct a thorough hazard assessment which is to identify things that may harm us and then ensure that we have appropriate controls in place such as personal protection equipment so that there is no chance of an injury occurring. If we identify hazards that are less than 3 meters, that if we were to fall on them would cause us a serious injury, we need to take actions so that we can not fall. We would be glad to assist you in confidently working at heights. Stop in and challenge us with your safety needs.

Agerelated hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss. • Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. • Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL. In some instances, hearing loss may be the result of a combination of factors. Anyone finding their hearing has become less acute should visit with an audiologist. One resource to visit is www.asha.org/ profind. The doctor can then prescribe a treatment plan to help improve hearing.

Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. • Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL,

Have a talk with your husband. Explain that you both need to encourage Champ not to bark, and there’s a better way to do it than barking back. Keep a few treats in your pocket to start, along with a click trainer. When Champ starts barking, click the trainer once and say “Speak.” Hold out a treat for him. When Champ takes the treat — meaning, stops barking for a moment

ter and 1 cup of the sugar until creamy. Add the rava, almond paste, rose water, and brandy, and continue beating until light and creamy. Beat in the egg yolks 1 at a time. After adding the last egg yolk, beat for an additional minute to develop structure. In a clean, dry bowl, beat the egg whites until frothy. Add the cream of tartar, and beat until soft peaks form. While beating, slowly add the remaining 1 tablespoon sugar, and continue beating until the egg whites are stiff. Add 1⁄4 of the stiff egg whites to the cake batter, and fold in with swift strokes. This will lighten the mixture. Now add the rest of the egg whites and fold in gently yet firmly, without deflating the mixture. Scrape into the prepared cake pan, smooth the top, and bake in the center of the oven until golden brown all over and cake tester inserted in the middle comes out clean, approximately 20 minutes. To serve it up as a dessert, place some fresh fruit alongside each serving, dust with a little confectioner’s sugar, and garnish with a dollop of freshly whipped cream and some toasted slivered almonds. Note: You could also use marzipan, but remember that marzipan typically has more sugar in it than plain almond paste.

• It was noted American science fiction author Philip K. Dick who made the following sage observation: “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.” • You might be surprised to learn that when Hernan Cortes reached the New World in the 1600s, he found the Aztecs drinking hot chocolate at their banquets. • The World Health Organization does not include cockroaches on its list of insects hazardous to human health. • Are you afraid of rattlesnakes? Those are certainly dangerous creatures, but keep in mind that the venom of a black widow spider is 15 times deadlier than that of the rattler — and the spider doesn’t provide an earlywarning alarm like the rattler does. • The name for that lovely lavender stone, amethyst, is derived from the Greek term for “not drunk.” • You probably knew that cats were revered in ancient Egypt, but did you know that when a domestic cat died, the family went into mourning? Yep. People would shave their eyebrows to demonstrate their grief over the passing of their beloved pet. • If you’re like the aver-

age American, you eat roughly 17 pounds of potato chips every year. • Way back in 1879, the Cincinnati Gazette predicted that the game of baseball had “run its course.” • Singer and songwriter Roger Miller, best known for his hit song “King of the Road,” had a passion for music early, even though his family was poor. When he was in grade school, he spent his weekends picking cotton so he could save up enough money to buy a guitar. After eighth grade he quit school and went to work herding cattle and riding in rodeos. Thought for the Day: “It is better to sleep on things beforehand than lie awake about them afterwards.” — Baltasar Gracian
