Q: What can you tell me about the actress with black hair who is in 95 percent of the Progressive Insurance commercials? — Joseph R. A: Stephanie Courtney has played Flo, the exuberant Progressive insurance spokeswoman, for a decade now. She’s a member of the famous Groundlings improv group in Los Angeles, and she also did standup comedy before becoming famous. She has several TV act-

ing credits to her name, including roles in “Mad Men” and as a semi-regular on “The Goldbergs.” You can see many photos of her naturally beautiful self not dressed as Flo on her Facebook page, https:// www.facebook.com/stephanie.courtney.18. Q: I’ve been watching the old show “Parking Wars” on A&E. Is there a chance that it will come back with new episodes in the near future? — Kevin D. A: “Parking Wars” aired for five seasons on A&E, from 2008 to 2012. Footage of cars being booted or towed and their subsequent retrieval by their unhappy owners was captured mostly in

DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you mind providing some guidelines for preventing eye strain? I’m a graduate student, so I spend a lot of time reading, both from computer screens and from books. I will always need to read to get things done, but I’d also like my eyes to last me

my whole life. — B.I. ANSWER: We tend to spend a lot of time reading or in front of computer screens, and eye strain is very common. I think eye problems from excess screen time and reading fall into two categories: dry eyes and muscle strain. Computer users in particular can get dry eyes, largely from decreased blinking. Unfortunately, “blink more” isn’t likely to be successful advice, so I recommend an eye lubricant, used periodically during computer work if you have any sense of eye fatigue or strain. If dry eyes are part of your prob-

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My husband and I have decided to call it quits after seven years together. We don’t have any kids, so we’re mainly just splitting up assets. But there’s a problem: Both of us want “Spitz,” our little terrier mix. What can I do? Is this something that has to be decided by a judge? — Calling it Splits in Sacramento DEAR SPLITS: Who gets the pets is an issue that often comes up in divorce. And because the way we view pets is changing — they’re more often considered an extension of the family, rather than simply property — the way judges decide who gets to keep the pets is changing too. For example, California now gives judges much more leeway in determining who gets custody of pets in a divorce. Rather than basing the decision on who paid for or who adopted a pet, the judge can look at factors like

who walks the dog every day, who takes the cat to the veterinarian and so on. In states with no-fault divorce or that allow mediation rather than hashing it out in court, the divorcing couple can negotiate custody of pets, taking into account factors like who fed them every day, who trained them, who paid for medical care, etc., and determine who’s going to be responsible for those things. I even know of a couple who worked out a shared custody arrangement where one of them cared for their two dogs during the week and the other took them on the weekends. I wish you both the best of luck and hope you’ll both agree on an arrangement that is best for Spitz. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Philadelphia with other cities added in later seasons. As of now there are no plans to revive the series, but there are similar shows on cable, such as “South Beach Tow,”

“Lizard Lick Towing” and “Operation Repo,” all on TruTV. Q: Where have I seen the beautiful actress who stars in the previews I’ve seen for the new Amazon series “The Romanoffs”? She reminds me of Michelle Pfeiffer. — P.M. A: She’s Australian actress Radha Mitchell, who first became familiar to American audiences when she starred in the 2004 movie “Finding Neverland” with Johnny Depp and then later headlined the short-lived TV series “Red Widow” on ABC. “The Romanoffs” is a contemporary anthology series featuring actors as different people around

the world who believe themselves to be descendants of the tragically murdered Russian royal family. It was filmed on location on three different continents using local production and international talent. The first episode became available Oct. 12 to Amazon Prime Video subscribers and starred Aaron Eckhart, with a new installment being rolled out weekly, eight in all. The series was created by writer/director Matthew Weiner, who won nine Emmy Awards for “Mad Men,” his TV series about a 1960s ad agency. Christina Hendricks, Jay R. Ferguson and John Slattery of “Mad Men” fame are featured in “The

Romanoffs.” Mitchell’s episode, titled “Panorama,” is set in Mexico City and will be available for streaming starting Nov. 9. Q: Who did Gwyneth Paltrow recently marry? Is he an actor? I didn’t recognize him. — S.B. A: The movie star and lifestyle blogger Gwyneth Paltrow married producer Brad Falchuk on Sept. 29 in the Hamptons in New York. They met when Paltrow guest starred on the series “Glee,” which Falchuk was producing at the time. He is not an actor, but he helped create “American Horror Story,” with Ryan Murphy. lem, you will feel relief immediately, and you should use a drop in each eye every few hours. Muscle strain comes from staring at one point of focus — your computer screen — for long periods of time. Also, many people tend to hold their shoulders and neck in an uncomfortable position during computer work or play. The solution is to get away from the computer for a while. I recommend getting up and pacing periodically, since prolonged sitting isn’t good for you. Another option is the 20-20-20 rule (I haven’t been able to discover who made the rule, but I think it makes sense): Look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This can help prevent fatigue to the ciliary mus-

cles, the muscles of the eye. Some people, especially those who are nearing or past their 50th birthday, might benefit from very mild reading glasses when using the computer. There is a science behind adjusting your workspace, lighting and monitor settings to reduce strain. There are apps to remind you to take breaks periodically and to change the color of your computer to make it easier on the eyes. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had nail fungus since 1985 in both my toenails and my fingernails. I was treated with oral Lamisil, but it did nothing for my big toe. I have been treated by skin and foot specialists, but the problem has continued progressively over the years. I am

80 years old, and it’s still there. Is there really any hope for cases like mine? — C.J.R. ANSWER: Are you sure you really want the condition treated? The treatments have potential for real harm, even though it isn’t likely. If the issue is strictly cosmetic, I wouldn’t recommend treatment. If it’s for pain or because you have had skin or soft tissue infections in the area, then treatment is reasonable. If you pursue treatment, get a culture done to be sure you know what you are treating. Sometimes what looks like a nail infection is really something else (psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus or others). Depending on what the culture shows, you might benefit from itraconazole,

an oral antifungal agent. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Flu shot clinics begin on Oct. 22 By Devin Wilger Staff Writer Flu season is fast approaching, which means that the time to get flu shots is coming just as quickly. Starting Oct. 22, flu shots will be available at clinics throughout the city and at pharmacies in the area. Dr. Ashok Chhetri recommends everyone get their flu shot this season. The influenza virus, most commonly known as the flu, is highly contagious, one of the top ten infectious diseases affecting the Canadian population. The difference between influenza and the common cold virus is the quick onset. “You go to work in the morning and you are completely fine, and when you come

home at night you are completely down, just like you were hit by a truck,” said Chhetri. Symptoms include fever, headache, cough, muscle aches, and runny nose. In children and elderly people, fever may not be present with influenza, said Chhetri. It spreads person to person though droplets, when people with the virus cough or sneeze. It is also possible to get it indirectly though touching a surface with the virus on it and touching your face. One of the unique things with influenza is the period of communicability, explained Chhetri. People can begin to spread the disease before they have symptoms. The communicability period is one

day before symptoms and five days after. “You might be infecting your coworkers, patients, family members before you even know about it.” The people who are more prone to get complications are seniors, children under 5, pregnant women, and adults and children with existing chronic conditions, like diabetes or heart disease. While there are plenty of people who believe they are not at risk, Chhetri recommends that they get a flu shot as well. The reason is not to avoid the disease, but instead to stop the transmission of the disease. While many healthy people might not show symptoms, they could still infect people around you, and vaccination is the best way to stop yourself from being a car-

rier of the disease. “It’s not only about you. Think about your home, your grandparents, children or grandchildren who are very high risk for influenza disease or getting severe complications from the disease.” This year’s vaccines will contain two strains of Influenza A and two strains of Influenza B. Long term care residents will get a larger dose of the vaccine than the general population, because they are higher risk. The first clinic will be at St. Mary’s Cultural Centre on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed between 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The full list of clinics is available at 4flu. ca or by calling 1-866-343-1460.

The many health benefits of honey Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile

addition to anyone’s diet. • Substitute for refined sugar: Refined sugar offers little to no nutritional value and is full of empty calories. Heathline says that honey has bioactive plant compounds and antioxidants as well as trace amounts of vitamins and minerals. The antioxidants

in honey, which include phenols and flavonoids, may help prevent cardiovascular disease, stroke and some types of cancer. • Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is

Volleyball blitz Sacred Heart High School hosted a senior girls volleyball tournament on Oct. 12 and 13. Both SHHS and YRHS were among the eight teams in the tournament, but were unable

antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked. • Soothes sore throat: Taking a tablespoon of honey to relieve itchy, dry throats and coughs can be effective. In a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, it was determined that honey could be just as effective at stemming cough as the popular medicine dextromethorphan. • Helps reduce inflammation: Honey is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties. As a result, honey can help treat diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, and other diseases traced back to widespread inflammation, according to Greek researcher Natalia Vallianou of the Evangelismos Hospital in Athens. • Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fruc-

tose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life. • Has probiotic properties: Some varieties of honey contain large amounts of the friendly bacteria that the body

needs to maintain a healthy gut microbiome. • Promotes healing: There is evidence that clinical use of honey on burns and wounds can be beneficial. Data published in the Scientific World Journal said that honey can be used to dress wounds and that it produces similar results to other topical treatments in promoting healing. Honey is a natural wonder that can be equally useful in the kitchen and in the medicine cabinet.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A colleague might offer to open a door for you professionally. But before you walk through it, be sure this “favor” isn’t attached to an obligation you might find difficult to discharge. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creativity, your persistence and your reliability could lead to a major career shift. Be sure to use that other Taurean trait, your practicality, when discussing what the job offers. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation might require some adjustments you might not have been prepared to make. However, flexibility in this matter could be the best course to follow at this time. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re in a period of fluctuating moods, which is not unusual for the Moon Child. Your emotions stabilize by the 26th. Meanwhile, try to hold off making major decisions until then. LEO (July 23 to August 22) That keen sense of perception helps you hunt down those minute details that others overlook. And, of course, your Leonine ego will accept the expected praise with good grace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to be confrontational when raising a work-related issue. Better to make a request than a demand.

And, of course, be prepared to back up your case with facts. LIBRA (September 23 to

“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” (PG) — Drac (voiced by Adam Sandler) is stressed out, and daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) decides he could use a vacation from the vacation biz. She books a monster of a cruise, and the whole gang — Frank, Harry, wives, kids, parents, and even Blobby — head out of the hotel to experience all that the sea has to offer. When Drac lays eyes on Captain Ericka (Kathryn Hahn), it’s love at first sight, but the good captain has her sights set

on a more sinister outcome. It’s just as cute as its two animated predecessors, which is a compliment for a threequel. “Skyscraper” (PG-13) — Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) is as tough as they come — a decorated veteran, former hostagerecovery team leader and now consultant who arrives in Hong Kong to assess the security of the newest-fangled residence in the world’s tallest building, the 240-story “Pearl.” The building is overtaken by criminals intent on sabotage, and they kidnap Sawyer’s family to get it. But “The Rock” isn’t going to take that lying down as he’s literally jumps into action — to the burning building from a

Neve Campbell, Dwayne Johnson in “Skyscraper”. crane. While short on plot explanations, the movie will get you high on vertigo. “Skyscraper” won’t win any awards, but it’s thrilling enough to recommend anyway. Kudos to Neve Campbell, who plays Sawyer’s wife — no damsel

in distress there. “Hotel Artemis” (R) — Jodie Foster stars as The Nurse, a shady agoraphobic who runs a secret hotel/hospital for crooks in the near-future, savaged and riotous Los Angeles. Called Hotel Artemis, it’s

got a very strict code: members only, no guns, no killings on site. Its patrons pay for access to medical care with no questions asked. These colorful, dangerous women and men take on the names of the suites to which they’re assigned: Acapulco, an arrogant arms dealer; Waikiki and Honolulu, two bank-robbing brothers; and Nice, a sexy assassin on a selfimposed medical hiatus. The Nurse is backed up by her mountain of an assistant, Everest (Dave Bautista). “Eighth Grade” — Written and directed by Bo Burnham in his feature debut, “Eighth Grade” is an unfiltered exploration of middle school awkwardness. It features

Elsie Fisher as 13-yearold Kayla — a girl who is named “most quiet” at school but who makes practically unwatched YouTube videos with motivational pep talks about self-esteem. She nails the completely oblivious and simultaneously acutely self-aware quality of your average kid on the brink of high school. As we walk through the highs and lows of Kayla’s last days of eighth grade, we are treated to an unvarnished view — not nostalgic, not overdramatized, but real and honest and thoughtful. Reap the benefits of physical therapy Injuries have the potential to sideline people for weeks, months or permanently. Injury to the body can occur when participating in organized sports, fitness regimens or even after being in an accident. Recovering from incidents that can impact mobility and range of motion takes time, but physical therapy can help the body acclimate to regular activity once more. Physical therapy also can help healthy people as well. Those who have suffered a sprain or a broken bone or even spent a duration of time immobile in the hospital due to an illness are often prescribed physical therapy as part of their follow-up treatment. Physical therapy programs try to progressively increase strength, improve mobility and help the body return to a state where it can function as best as possible. In many cases, a person can regain his or her original capabilities. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, a physical therapist is a trained and licensed medical professional who has the experience to diagnose physical abnormalities, restore physical function and mobility, maintain that function, and promote proper form for future activity. Physical therapy

sessions can take place in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, fitness settings, private practices, and much more. Not only can physical therapists react to and treat an injury, but they can also teach exercises, stretches and techniques to help prevent problems in the first place. Experts at Bay State Physical Therapy indicate that physical therapy extends beyond disabled or injured people. Physical therapists can educate a person on weaknesses in the body and can guide correction on poor body mechanics that cause pain. This way a person can make changes to prevent future pain and injury. Rather than being reactionary, healthy individuals can take a proactive approach to avoiding pain and injury. When one opts for physical therapy, he or she may:

• undergo a physical exam and evaluation of pain, movement, flexibility, and performance • receive a clinical diagnosis and plan of care • establish long-term goals • participate in physical therapy treatment,

which may include stretching, movement and weightbearing activities based on the therapist’s guidance • be given at-home work to further progress in between sessions. While physical therapy can be used for recovery from strokes or paralysis,

injuries, trauma, and musculoskeletal conditions, it also benefits healthy people. For example, women can use physical therapy to learn exercises that may prevent pelvic floor dysfunction. In addition, physical therapy can teach people how to improve their

balance and prevent falls. When people hear about physical therapy, they tend to think it is for people with injuries. While physical therapists can help heal injured parts of the body, physical therapy continues to evolve to assist with overall wellness.

Let’s face it. As parents, no matter our ages, amid all the busyness and to-dos of family life, there is one unshakeable truth: Kids are our priority, our most important responsibility and our greatest joy. They are what we care about most. And it’s the little things that parents do that really count: a hug on the way to school, a vote of confidence before a big test, an “I’m so happy to see you” when they walk in the door. These gestures help

• On Oct. 28, 1775, the commander in chief of the British army, Major Gen. Sir William Howe, forbids Boston residents to leave the city. He ordered citizens to organize into military companies for the preservation of order. • On Oct. 27, 1904, New York City Mayor George McClellan takes the controls on the inaugural run of the city’s new subway, which traveled 9.1 miles through 28 stations. More than 100,000 people paid a nickel each to take their first ride. • On Oct. 26, 1944, after four days of fighting, the World War II Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, the largest air-naval battle in history, ends with a decisive American victory over the Japanese. • On Oct. 22, 1962, in a televised address, President John F. Kennedy announces that the Soviet Union has placed nuclear weapons in Cuba and, in response, the United States will establish a blockade around the island. • On Oct. 23, 1983, a suicide bomber drives a truck packed with explosives into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 241 U.S. military personnel. It can be in the car while driving to fall games or when you’re simply tossing the salad for dinner. Maybe it’s in the morning when you’re scurrying around, you might say, “Honey, let’s make breakfast,” while extending the marmalade jar, a little spoon and a piece of toast. Move through your day with an eye toward sharing the everyday moments. Eavesdropping over my backyard fence, I observed just that. After nine days, Smith confessed that the carjacking tale was false and that she had driven her Mazda into a lake in order to drown her children. Smith, though married, was involved with another man who did not want children. • On Oct. 24, 2003, the British Airways supersonic Concorde jet makes its last commercial passenger flight, traveling from New York to London. HOLLYWOOD — James Bond fans can breathe easy now. First, they had to worry if Daniel Craig would return as 007, and happily, he will. Then “Bond 25 was set to premiere in October 2019. Suddenly, director Danny Boyle (Oscar winner for “Slumdog Millionaire) had creative differences and bowed out. A desperate search for a new director began so the film could keep its opening date. Happily, producers found one in Cary Joji Fukunaga, who will be the first American-born director of a Bond film. Fukunaga directed Netflix’s “Beast of No Nation and the current season of “Maniac, with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. He also gave us the first season of HBO’s “True Detective. Sadly, we’ll have to wait until Valentine’s Day 2020 to get our 007 fix. Die-hard “Downton Abbey fans who’ve been clamoring for a movie version of their favorite series have been granted their wish. Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Laura

Patrick Stewart Carmichael, Elizabeth McGovern and yes, even Maggie Smith are on board. The film is set for a Sept. 13, 2019, release. Chris Hemsworth, who as Thor was one of the stars of the $2 billion- grossing “Avengers: Infinity War, is in the untitled “Avengers film coming May 3. He’s currently starring in “Bad Times at the El Royale, with Jeff Bridges, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm and Nick Offerman. Hemsworth also has signed on to be one of “The Men In Black in the reboot titled “MIB, with Liam Neeson, Rebecca Ferguson and Emma Thompson, arriving June 14. Also in the works is “Kingsman 3, which so far has Taron Egerton

returning, while the rest of the cast hold out for more money, and a sequel to Stephen King’s “The Shining, called “Doctor Sleep, starring Bruce Greenwood and Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Danny Torrance. Another reboot on its way is “Charlie’s Angels, with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the Angels. And you’ll never believe this, but Captain Picard from “Star Trek: The Next Generation, Sir Patrick Stewart, will play Bosley. Expect it to arrive Sept. 27, 2019. Allison Janney, who won an Oscar this year for “I, Tonya and is continuing to star in the CBS comedy series “Mom, is one busy lady. She’s just completed the psych-drama “Ma, with Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer (who did a running character on “Mom) and Luke Evans, as well as “Troupe Zero with Oscar-winner Viola Davis, comic Jim Gaffigan and Mike Epps. She also will take on the role of attorney Susan Estrich in the movie about disgraced Fox TV head Roger Ailes. Janney plays wacky mothers well, but a straightlaced attorney, now that will be real acting!

While the markets and grocery stores are brimming with beautiful fruits and vegetables in the warmer months, there’s also a delicious variety of fruits and vegetables when the weather turns cooler. To stay healthy and ward off diseases, it’s important to include fruits and vegetables in your diet yearround. Here are some of the superstar fruits and vegetables of the fall and winter months. Sweet Potatoes Loaded with betacarotene (which the body makes into vitamin A), vitamin C, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B-6, sweet potatoes have more nutrients than regular white potatoes and can replace white potatoes in some recipes. Try them mashed, baked or as a dessert. Apples This traditional fall favorite is readily available in the supermarket, or you can pick your own at a nearby orchard. They are a quick, easy snack and can be paired with peanut butter or cheese for protein. Apples contain antioxidants, which may help protect against certain cancers and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Apples have vitamin C, vitamin K and fiber. Broccoli A versatile vegetable

that can be eaten raw or cooked, hot or cold, by itself or with other foods. Broccoli can help prevent cancer and heart disease and boost the immune system. Nutrients in broccoli include vitamins C, A and B-6, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin E. Green Beans This vegetable is high in vitamin K, which protects red blood cells and helps reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They also contain vitamin C, potassium, folate, iron and magnesium. Spinach Dark green veggies contain a variety of nutrients that a healthy body needs. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin E. Spinach also has antioxidants and anti-cancer agents. Frozen or fresh spinach can be added to just about any meal. Winter Squash and Pumpkin Winter squash includes acorn, butternut, Hubbard, spaghetti and turban and have hard, thick skins and seeds. Pumpkin is a great

source of beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that is good for the eyes. It also contains potassium. Canned or prepared fresh, pumpkin can be made into a variety of soups, baked goods and desserts. Try this wonderful recipe for Crispy Pork Chops with Pumpkin Apple Butter. It’s the perfect showcase for autumn fruits and vegetables. CRISPY PORK CHOPS WITH PUMPKIN APPLE BUTTER You can use fresh or canned and mashed sweet potatoes instead of the pumpkin puree. Any remaining Pumpkin Apple Butter will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or you can freeze it in an air-tight container for up to 3 months. It’s also delicious on bread, pancakes or waffles. If you’re pressed for time, a good quality, commercially made jar of pumpkin butter also will work well for this recipe. •1 (14-ounce) can pumpkin puree •1/2 cup apple juice •1/4 cup water •1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, stevia or agave syrup •1/8 teaspoon ground

nutmeg or cloves •1 teaspoon ground ginger •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •8 (1/4-inch thick) boneless pork chops •2 tablespoons poultry seasoning •1-1/2 teaspoon salt •1-1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper •1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper •1/2 cup Panko white or whole-wheat bread crumbs •1/2 cup all-purpose or whole-wheat flour •1 egg, beaten with 3 tablespoons of water •1/4 cup oil for frying

Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add breaded pork chops and cook until golden brown on both sides and cooked through, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on a paper towellined plate. Place 2 tablespoons of the pumpkin apple butter on each plate. Place the pork chops on the pumpkin butter. Serve with a side of steamed spinach, green beans or broccoli. Makes 8 pork chops.

Whisk together pumpkin puree, apple juice, water, brown sugar, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon in a saucepan until smooth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the mixture has reached the consistency of applesauce, about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, sprinkle the pork chops with 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. In a medium bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, flour, the remaining 1 tablespoon of poultry seasoning, the remaining teaspoon of salt and black pepper, and the 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper until well-combined. Pour the crumb mixture into a shallow dish. Dip the pork chops in the egg, shake off excess. Firmly press the pork chops into the Panko mixture to coat on both sides.

Brace Yourself For Winter

Birds need extra assistance in winter Suet is a high-fat meal for birds who need food in winter. Cold weather can be particularly taxing on many of the birds individuals discover in their backyards throughout the year. Although some species migrate to warmer climates each winter, many stay put and attempt to ride out winter in their normal habitats. Birds that tend to stay put include finches, sparrows, titmice, jays, woodpeckers, chickadees, and cardinals. Winter days can be windy and cold for birds, and nights are even more challenging. In winter, birds no longer have berries and lush vegetation to consume and insects have died or gone underground. Since finding food can be especially difficult, and shelter may be scarce, many birds can benefit from a little help from their human friends.

Shelter Wild Birds Unlimited says shelter for birds is hard to come by in winter. Trees have shed their leaves, and evergreens may not be as abundant or protective. As a result, birds frequently seek man-made structures that can provide refuge from the elements. People can provide shelters for birds, which may include traditional birdhouses, windbreaks and snow shields. Even a brush pile can simulate the natural shelters of trees and shrubs that birds prefer. Roost boxes are another option and one that can accommodate small flocks that will group together and share their body heat. Use leaves and branches to provide natural camouflage and help attract birds to the shelter. Offer yarn, fabric scraps, cotton, and other insulating materials that birds can

use to help make their shelters more comfortable. Food Birds require high-calorie and high-fat foods in the winter so they can keep up their metabolism to generate warmth. Also, since birds’ feeding habits vary depending on the type of bird, it may be necessary to place feeders at varying heights to maximize access. Feeders should be located out of the wind and in an area that offers safe refuge from predators. The National Wildlife Federation also says individuals should put out sizable feeders and/or use multiple feeders to provide ample food during snow and ice storms. Feeders should be checked regularly and kept full. Consistency is also important because birds will grow accustomed to being supplemented with food and may depend on

Ways to help prepare your home for winter Winter is on its way and, for most of the country that means freezing temps, wind, snow, ice and heavy jackets. To prepare your home and your household for the colder months ahead, review this handy checklist, which is designed to help you be more prepared for whatever old man winter has in store. Please keep personal safety in mind when checking items off this list, and connect with a trusted professional or contractor for help with anything you are unable to do yourself

• Mail chutes • Electrical and gas lines 2. Clean your gutters Clear gutters help drain water away from your roof and your house. If they’re clogged however, especially in colder months, they’re more apt to freeze, causing additional blockages. Blocked gutters can allow melting ice and snow to seep into your roof, or flood your home’s foundation, causing damage. If it’s safe to do so, take

1. Invest in weather stripping Weather stripping is a good way to help seal warm air in and cold air out of your home. Available in almost any hardware store, weather stripping installs quickly around windows and doors and can help prevent air leaks. Before winter arrives, check the following parts of your home for leaks or drafts: • Windows • Doors • Vents and fans • Plumbing areas • Air conditioners

some time before winter hits and clear out your gutters, or work with a trusted roofing professional or contractor to have your gutters cleaned. 3. Evaluate your roof to prevent ice dams While a roofing professional is cleaning the gutters, see if he or she can evaluate your roof for ice dams too. In cold weather, heat escaping your home can melt and refreeze ice and Continued on Page A15

such supplements to survive. Bird Watcher’s Digest suggests a variety of foods for birds. Black-oil sunflower seeds, peanuts, suet, cracked corn, millet, thistle seed, safflower, and various fruits can help many birds thrive. It’s also suggested to include mealworms, which can be purchased at bait stores or pet stores. These larvae of beetles can be presented in a shallow dish with slippery sides so the worms cannot crawl out. Birds typically need extra support to survive harsh winters. Offering food and shelter during these bleak months can help.

Brace Yourself For Winter

Top ten winter pet safety tips There are still many cold days of winter ahead. Here is a list of top safety tips to ensure you and your pet have a safe end of season. 1. Never leave your cat or dog alone in a cold car. Cars hold in the cold, acting like refrigerators, which can cause your pet to freeze to death. 2. Keep your pets warm. If it’s too cold for you to say outside, it’s too cold for your pet. Although some breeds can withstand colder temperatures, it is important to supply adequate housing. 3. Keep animals away from winter puddles. They may contain ethylene

glycol found in antifreeze which can be fatal if ingested. 4. Keep your pets away from bodies of water. With melting ice and rising water levels, lakes can be extremely dangerous for you and your pet. 5. Wipe your pet’s paws and underside after being outside. Salt and ice melt can irritate and burn, and also be fatal if ingested. 6. Be aware of cats seeking warmth under vehicle hoods. Try knocking on the hood of your car to scare them away before starting the engine. 7. Don’t let your dog off leash especially during a snowstorm. They can

easily lose their scent and get lost. 8. A warm place to sleep. Ensure your pet has a thick cozy bed or blanket away from any drafts and off the cold floor. 9. Dress for the weather. Use booties and winter sweaters to help keep your pets warm during outdoor excursions. 10. Prepare an emergency pet survival kit. You never know when a storm might keep you from being able to leave the house for extended periods. Having an emergency pet survival kit could save a life.

PREPARING Continued from Page A14 snow on your roof, leading to ice dams. These block off drains, and let water and ice continually build up on your roof – and possibly under it – weakening your roof and putting your home at risk. To help prevent ice dams: • Insulate your attic - Your attic should have plenty of insulation to prevent too much heat transfer from your living areas to the attic. Check parts of the attic that may not be well insulated, like: • Pipes and vents • Chimney systems • Light fixtures Ventilate your attic - If your attic wasn’t built with a ventilation system, contact a trusted professional or contractor about ventilating your attic before winter. Proper ventilation allows cold air into the attic, while the insulation seals heat in your living areas. This can help prevent warm air from melting ice on the roof, leading to possible damage. 4. Buy a roof rake to keep snow from building up An average roof can handle up to four feet of fresh snow before it’s stressed. However, as snow packs down from multiple storms, could cause a roof collapse! If you expect a lot of snow this winter, invest in a roof rake. It can help you easily clear snow off your roof and protect your

ages, which can wreak havoc on your home in the winter. To prepare, keep supplies on hand, and read more about the types of alternate heating sources available for purchase.

home during those blizzard months. 5. Prune trees around the house If there are long tree branches hanging near your house, your roof, or your gutters, prune them before it gets too cold. Branches broken from heavy snow and ice can cause all kinds of damage to your home. A few hours with the pruner now could save you thousands of dollars in damages later this

winter. 6. Stock up on basics You know what happens when the news calls for bad weather; stores flood with people, all buying milk, bread, batteries, flashlights, and duct tape by the truck load. How do you avoid this mess? Stock up on basic supplies before winter, and stay cozy in your home. Strong winds, blizzards, ice, and snow can cause blackouts and power out-

7. Protect pipes from freezing A burst pipe can cause more than $5,000 in water damage! Thankfully, you can do something to help protect your pipes from freezing in bitter cold weather. Don’t turn the heat down too much when you’re out of the house. You may not be there to enjoy it, but your pipes need the heat to prevent freezing.

Let faucets drip during serious cold snaps to provide relief for your pipes. Give your home a once over for any exposed or vulnerable piping, and wrap them with insulation. Hardware stores usually carry foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves for pipes, which are easy to install.

Brace Yourself For Winter

How to stay safe in your vehicle in winter Ensure the tail pipe isn’t blocked with snow or ice and check the exhaust system for leaks to prevent carbon monoxide from leaking into the car. • To get fresh air crack a window on the side of the car away from the wind. • Don’t over exert yourself by trying to push your car out. • Moving your arms and legs and deep breathing occasionally helps with circulation. Tips For Winter Car Care Winter car care should start in the fall, giving you plenty of time to prepare for the snow hits the ground. Here are a few suggestions to get your car ready for the winter months:

• Test your battery, fully charged automotive batteries should measure at 12.6 volts or above. When the engine is running, this measurement should be 13.7 to 14.7 volts. CAA memberships offer a battery service that will come test, replace, and recycle your battery. • If the temperature drops below -15°C consider using a block heater. This reduces stress on your vehicle’s engine and heats up the cabin quicker. • Consider using winter tires. The rubber in winter tires doesn’t harden like all-season tires, offering better grip on the road (allseason tires lose elasticity at around -7°C). Currently, only Québec makes it man-

datory to install winter tires. • It’s a good idea to take your car in for a checkup, especially if you plan on taking long road-trips. • Top up your windshield washer fluid and carry extra in your car. Make sure it is rated for -40°C. • Check your vehicle’s manual to ensure you are adhering to the winter maintenance recommendations. • Keep your gas tank at least half full. This helps prevent your gas line from freezing and allows you to run your car for short periods for warmth if you ever get stuck. https://www.caa.ca/winter-driving/winter-driving/

• Keep an emergency kit in your car. Remember to be courteous to other drivers; lead by example. If someone shows signs of aggressive behavior give them space and avoid them. Tips If You Get Stuck • Call CAA… not a member? • Stay with your car. It’s safer than standing at the side of the road and makes it easier for rescuers to find you. • Use common sense and assess if your vehicle is in a dangerous position and you are in more danger in your car. Ex. Hidden behind a bend, in traffic, poorly visible, etc. • Use your hazards. • Run the engine for long enough to keep the car from getting too cold.

signal well in advance, and give yourself plenty of room for braking. • If you are travelling to meet friends or family let them know when you’re leaving, your estimated time of arrival, and remind them you will be driving and unable to answer the phone. • If you are travelling with others, assign a designated texter and give them the task of responding to and managing the phone, GPS, radio/playlist, and any other distractions. • Make sure you have your CAA card on you and the number saved in your phone, or download the CAA app. • Ensure your phone is fully charged before heading out and keep a charger in your vehicle.

It’s always important to stay focused on the road, especially during winter. Below is information and a few tips on how to stay safe and take care of your vehicle in the winter months. Tips for Safe Winter Driving • Check the weather and road conditions before travelling. Plan your trip accordingly by giving yourself extra time to get to your destination, or by postponing your trip. • Clean all of the snow off your vehicle before you leave, including your roof. Ice and snow that comes off your vehicle can limit visibility and can be dangerous to other road users. • Adjust your driving to the weather conditions; slow down, use your turn

Tire maintenance a key component of winter check up Salt, grime and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical winter. Drivers will not get far without tires in good repair, which is why tire maintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist.

at the very least. Take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic to get their opinion on how to remedy the situation. Mechanics may recommend rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every six months for the average driver. Wheel realignment may be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Misaligned

Inflation levels Now is the time to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. Many tires indicate the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidewalls. Cold temperatures may cause tires to deflate Buy a little. Winter weather can cause tire pressure reduction at about one PSI for every 10 degrees the temperature drops. Driving on improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also will improve fuel economy, so drivers may even save a little money by inflating their tires. Tire rotation/realignment Examine the tires for tread wear. Any uneven or abnormal tread wear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the wheels realigned

wheels can cause handling problems, like the car “pulling” to one side. Tire replacement Drivers may discover extreme tread wear, bulges or even cracks in the sidewall during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s time to replace the tires. Failing to replace old, worn down tires can increase the risk of automobile accidents.

Vegan burger utilizes fall flavor When it comes to vegan diets, one common misconception is that such diets are limiting. But this is not the case at all. Thanks to increased attention and support of veganism, plenty of recipes have been developed in conjunction with vegan parameters — even ones that evoke flavors attributed to traditionally made foods. Ideal for autumn, when pumpkins are in abundance and hearty dishes are embraced, this “Grilled Pumpkin and Black Bean Burger,” courtesy of The Vegan Society, is an easily prepared meal that’s bursting with flavor. It can be enjoyed for a weeknight dinner or as a weekend lunch or picnic classic.

beans •1 teaspoon salt •2 minced chipotle peppers •1⁄4 cup sweet corn •3 tablespoon mashed pumpkin •1 cup breadcrumbs •1⁄2 cup chopped pecans (optional if you are avoiding nuts)

Grilled Pumpkin and Black Bean Burger Serves 4 •1 tablespoon oil •1⁄2 cup diced red onion •1⁄2 cup diced red pepper •3 cloves minced garlic •1 teaspoon ground cumin •1 - 15 ounce can black

Dice the red onion, red pepper and mince the garlic. Heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, red pepper and sweet corn then sauté for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. Drain and rinse the black beans and pat dry. Place in a deep bowl. Using the back of a fork, mash about half the beans and leave the other half whole.

Rich and nutty comfort food Bread pudding is a tasty concoction made with simple ingredients that, when combined, pack a delicious punch. Bread pudding often can be crafted from ingredients one likely already has in the kitchen. In addition, recipes can be adjusted depending on the number of servings desired. While bread pudding may be thought of as a dessert, it also can make for a tantalizing meal at breakfast or brunch. Ideal for warming up on autumn or winter days, this “Breakfast Bread Pudding With Pecan Crumble,” courtesy of The American Pecan Council and Brandon Matzek, founder

of the culinary website Kitchen Konfidence, is sure to be a hit. This satisfying dish also can be prepared ahead of time and then garnished before warming and serving.

For the bread pudding: •1⁄2 tablespoon unsalted butter, for greasing

•1 pound brioche bread, cut into 3⁄4-inch cubes •8 eggs •2 cups milk •1⁄2 cup heavy cream •1⁄2 cup sugar •1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar •1 tablespoon vanilla extract •2 tablespoons good bourbon •Pinch of fine grain sea salt •1⁄2 cup chopped pecans, toasted For the crumbled topping: •1⁄2 cup flour •1⁄2 cup pecan pieces •1⁄2 cup packed dark brown sugar •1 teaspoon cinnamon •1⁄4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt •3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature •Sliced persimmons, for serving (optional) •Maple syrup, for serving (optional) Lightly butter a 9x13 baking dish, then place cubes of brioche in the baking dish in an even layer. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugars, vanilla, bourbon, and a pinch of sea salt. Sprinkle toasted pecans over the brioche, then pour the wet ingredient mixture evenly all over the bread, making sure it’s covered thoroughly. Cover and let sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours (or up to overnight). To bake the bread pudding: Preheat the oven to 350 F and remove the baking dish from fridge. Meanwhile, prepare the crumble: Add flour, pecans, dark brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and butter to a medium bowl, and using your fingertips, rub ingredients together until evenly combined and clumps start to form. Sprinkle the surface of the bread evenly with the crumbs. Bake until the bread pudding is puffy and the top is golden, about 45 minutes to an hour. To serve, cut squares of warm bread pudding, and place on small plates. Top with sliced persimmons and maple syrup, if desired.

Mischief Night pranks put the ‘ha’ in Halloween Come the end of October, people across the country eagerly await the tricks and treats of Halloween. Plenty of fun is to be had on October 31, when hordes of costumeclad children and adults scour neighborhoods on the hunt for the best candy. But prior to Halloween comes the trickery, jokes and gags of Mischief Night. Mischief Night also may be referred to as Cabbage Night, Goosey Night, Moving Night, Mat Night, or Devil’s Night. In parts of the United Kingdom, it’s known as Mischievous Night, Miggy Night, Corn Night, or Trick Night. Mischief Night is October 30 (or November 4 in some areas of the UK) and began as an informal holiday when friends

pranked one another. While Halloween is all about the treats, Mischief Night is more about the tricks. The earliest references to Mischief Night date back to 1790s Britain. But back then the mischief occurred right before May Day. During the Protestant Reformation, much of England set out to distance itself from the treat side of Halloween because it was connected to Catholic saints. Gags and pranks were transferred to the eve of Guy Fawkes Night, a holiday that celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up British Parliament. However, in Ireland, Scotland and northern England, Halloween traditions — including good-natured

pranks — were maintained. Immigrants from these areas ultimately brought these traditions with them to North America. By the 1930s and 1940s, Mischief Night became popular in the United States. Ringing false alarms, covering trees in toilet paper, shaving cream fights, switching door mats or outdoor furniture, and ringing doorbells and running are some popular Mischief Night pranks. Much of the behavior consists of harmless fun, but Mischief Night has led to some unsavory acts, including more than 800 fires being lit in Detroit in 1984. In order to curb destructive behavior, many communities will ban the sale of eggs and

shaving cream to minors on Mischief Night. Others implement strict curfews. But that doesn’t mean people looking to engage in some good-natured mis-

chief cannot have their fun. Neighbors can host backyard mischief parties in which kids contain their antics to one or two yards. Mischief Night pre-

cedes Halloween and is still popular for many people. Keeping pranks fun and harmless ensures that this tradition can stick around for years to come.
