Ag scholarship program accepting applications Students wishing to submit an application for the 2019 Saskatchewan Agriculture Scholarship program can now do so. “Our government is proud to support a strong participation of young Canadians in the agriculture and food industry which is essential to the future and growth of our sector,” said Lawrence MacAulay Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. “Through schol-
arships like these, we’re giving students the knowledge, skills and tools they need to succeed in an industry that’s growing our economy and creating well-paying jobs.” The scholarship is funded through the Canadian Agriculture Partnership, a five-year, $388 million investment in strategic initiatives for Saskatchewan agriculture by the federal and provincial governments.
“Agriculture is a major employer and economic driver in our province and there are many exciting career opportunities to pursue,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said. “The scholarship program is all about encouraging youth interested in agriculture to take an active role in shaping the industry.” This year’s theme ‘Our Food Has a Story’ emphasizes the connection
between modern agriculture practices and trust in the agriculture industry. A food story ties consumers and producers together through shared values of health and nutrition, affordability, food safety and sustainability. Students interested in applying for the scholarship must submit a creative three-minute video or a 1,000-word essay based on topics surrounding their food story.
“This scholarship provides a great opportunity to show your passion for agriculture,” winner of the 2018 Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship Emma Hinz said. “It has allowed me to further my education and develop a deeper connection to the agriculture industry by sharing my voice.” One winning scholarship of $4,000 and three runner-up scholarships
of $2,000 will be awarded to students in Grade 12 and/or recent graduates entering agriculture-related post-secondary studies in 2019. The application deadline is March 1, 2019. For more information on the Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship and to view last year’s winners, visit www.saskatchewan.ca/agscholarship.
Home care individualized funding More Saskatchewan residents will now have access to Home Care Individualized Funding. The province is investing an additional $1.2 million annually to expand the Individualized Funding option. This will reduce wait lists and assist with creating capacity within the existing home care program. “Individualized Funding allows home care clients more choice and flexibility,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “The
additional funding will give more people more choice for what best suits their individual needs.” Home Care Individualized Funding provides funding directly to home care clients (or their caregivers) to arrange and manage their own supportive care services, including hiring their own staff and scheduling their staff when they want service. The Home Care Individualized Funding option for Home Care currently
serves 128 individuals across the province. For more information, including eligibility and how to apply for Home Care Individualized Funding, visit https://www. saskatchewan.ca/residents/health/accessing-health-care-services/care-at-homeand-outside-the-hospital/individualizedfunding-for-home-care. The funding for this investment is
coming from the Canada-Saskatchewan Bilateral Funding Agreement. Announced in January 2017, the federal government is providing Saskatchewan with close to $350 million over 10 years for targeted incremental investments in home and community care and mental health and addiction services. Of the $348.8 million, an estimated $190 million will support improved home and community care services.
Harvest nearly completed After multiple weeks of delay, many producers were able to return to the field and complete harvest. Thanks to warm and dry weather last week, producers now have 92 per cent of the 2018 crop harvested, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. This is up from 82 per cent last week, but slightly behind the fiveyear (2013-17) average of 94 per cent for this time of year. While many producers have wrapped up harvest or expect to in the coming days, the rest will need at least another week or more of warm and dry weather. Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 97 per cent of the crop is now combined. The south-
eastern and northeastern regions have 95 per cent combined, the west-central region 90 per cent and the east-central region 89 per cent. The northwest has made tremendous progress this past week and now has 82 per cent combined. Ninety-six per cent of barley and mustard, 94 per cent of durum, 92 per cent of spring wheat, 90 per cent of canola, 80 per cent of flax and 73 per cent of soybeans have now been combined. Crops continue to come off tough in many areas and are being placed in dryers when available. Little to no rainfall was reported across the province. Topsoil moisture conditions are relatively unchanged over the last few weeks. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated
as two per cent surplus, 65 per cent adequate, 28 per cent short and five per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 56 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and eight per cent very short. The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lodging, bleaching and sprouting. Geese and other wildlife continue to feed on swathed crops, while some standing crops have shelled out. Producers are completing fall work such as putting down fertilizer, working fields, fixing fences and hauling bales. This is the last weekly Crop Report for the season. There will be a final Crop Report released on November 8, 2018, to cap-
ture any additional harvest progress and to summarize the crop year. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at http://www.saskatchewan. ca/crop-report. Follow the 2018 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You often recommend that pet owners donate
allow first responders to provide more advanced care like giving pets oxygen, bandaging injuries or administering naloxone to counter the effects of opiates. As to how to help first responders get the supplies or training they need to effectively treat pets -contact them. Call your city or county offices and ask who coordinates donations
pets at emergency scenes. I’m just not sure where or how to donate. — Chet in Cincinnati DEAR CHET: That’s a great idea! Increasingly, fire and police departments are providing emergency care to pets on scene during fires, accidents and natural disasters. Laws are going on the books in many states, including Colorado and Ohio, that
their money or time to local shelters, and that is great. I’ve often wondered if there are other things we can do to help our furry friends. I saw a report about a puppy that was revived after choking by a local police officer, and realized that we can help first responders by making sure they have the supplies or training needed to care for injured
to these departments, then present your idea to them. Many smaller fire departments in rural areas don’t have the resources to purchase pet rescue supplies, and others need additional training. While there are some corporate sponsors who will fill specific needs — Invisible Fence Co., for example, donates pet oxygen masks through its

Project Breathe initiative — other needs remain unfilled. So, there are opportunities to help. You may need to do a little detective work, but make a few calls and you’ll find out exactly what police and firefighters need. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

A tighter-fitting tank keeps the shirt in place and not bunching up, allowing the sweater to move freely. • “Use a black permanent marker (like a Sharpie) to fix a small bleach spot on a black cotton top. As long as you have the right color match, you could do the same with any color top. I sometimes get small bleach spots on a shirt from cleaning.” — J.J. in Florida • Working hard at your job but not really getting anywhere? If your work ethic is impeccable but your client list or productivity leaves something to be desired, you might be in the wrong career. Take stock of your personal and professional strengths, then check in with a career coach. Experts say it’s never too late to find the right fit. • “Keep old toothbrushes for cleaning and crafting (and makeup applications). DEAR DR. ROACH: Please tell me about the supplement SAMe. I am a woman, 58, who suffers from osteoarthritis from my exercise routine, which is three days of heavy lifting with free weights and 15 miles of jogging each week. I love the workouts but not the pain it causes in my hands, knees and lower back. I get relief from ibuprofen and the like, but these can cause problems with long-term use. I have checked with several doctors and pharmacists concerning this supplement, but they know nothing about it. Doctors in Europe have been prescribing it since the 1970s. Can you give me your opinion of this supplement? — K.Z. ANSWER: S-adenosyl methionine, usually referred to as SAMe, is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, and it has been used as a supplement in people with depression and those with osteoarthritis. It appears to have effectiveness in both cases. Regular readers of this column know that I seldom recommend
supplements, but SAMe is one of the few that has good data backing it up. In a meta-analysis of 11 trials, SAMe was found to be about as effective at improving function and pain as ibuprofenlike drugs but with fewer adverse effects. It may take two full months to reach peak effectiveness, based on a 2004 study. As always, I have to warn that supplements are not FDA-regulated. SAMe is also relatively expensive (about $40 for 60 tablets at a U.S. warehouse store). Very inexpensive products are a warning that the product may not be of high quality or even contain what it is supposed to. This supplement is generally considered safe, but it is always best to speak with your doctor before taking any supplement. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have noticed that my 22-year-old granddaughter’s eyes are bulging more than in the past. She has not had a recent thyroid test. Can you help me understand the cause of this? She is addicted to table salt, using an extreme amount with every meal. What problems will this overuse of salt cause her? Are the two conditions linked in any way? — L.M. ANSWER: Exophthalmos, the bulging appearance of the eye, is a classic sign of Grave’s disease, an autoimmune stimulation
of the thyroid gland, where antibodies binds to receptors in the thyroid, stimulating it to produce more hormone. The bulging is not a result of thyroid excess, but rather a crossreaction of the antibody to fat cells behind the eye, causing the eye to bulge out. Treatment for excess thyroid hormone doesn’t reverse this, because the antibodies are still present. Your granddaughter needs to be tested for Grave’s disease. I have seen people whose eyes just appear to bulge. They have sometimes had dozens of thyroid tests, as every doctor they see checks their levels. Other conditions that can simulate exophthalmos include obesity, Cushing’s syndrome, inflammation of the eye muscles and other inflammatory diseases. Excess salt may increase blood pressure, and may even increase stroke risk in people with normal blood pressure, but I can’t think how it could be related to the appearance of her eyes. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Brace Yourself For Winter
Steps to save energy this winter Conserving energy is not just an eco-friendly endeavor, but a potentially lucrative one as well. Homeowners and apartment dwellers alike who attempt to conserve energy may do so to promote the long-term health of the planet, but such efforts also greatly reduce energy bills. Thanks to air conditioning systems, energy bills might spike in summer. But winter utility bills also can be costly, especially in homes that have not been winterized or audited to ensure energy is not being wasted. Winterizing a
air conditioning units may benefit by removing these units from windows before the arrival of winter. Window units left in windows may be allowing cold air into a home, leading to more energy consumption and higher energy bills. If removing the units is too difficult or impossible, purchase window unit covers that can be wrapped around the outside of the unit to prevent cold air from entering the home.
home involves taking steps to conserve resources and save a little money along the way. Windows A home’s windows can be a great place to start when winterizing a home. If the residents of a home feel cold when sitting near certain windows even though the windows are closed, the windows likely have drafts. Feel around the edges of the window and frame to determine if any cold air is coming in. If so, seal the leaks immediately. Unsealed leaks can make air inside
homes cold, prompting many to turn up the temperatures on their thermostats, which can lead to the
Top 10 pet safety tips We made it through the bulk of winter, however there are still many cold days ahead. We prepared a list of top safety tips to ensure you and your pet have a safe end of season. 1. Never leave your cat or dog alone in a cold car. Cars hold in the cold, acting like refrigerators, which can cause your pet to freeze to death. 2. Keep your pets warm. If it’s too cold for you to say outside, it’s too cold for your pet. Although some breeds can withstand colder temperatures, it is important to supply adequate housing. 3. Keep animals away from winter puddles. They may contain ethylene glycol found in antifreeze which can be fatal if ingested. 4. Keep your pets away from bodies of water. With melting ice and rising water levels, lakes can be extremely dangerous for you and your pet. 5. Wipe your pet’s paws and underside after being outside. Salt and ice melt can irritate and burn, and also be fatal if ingested. 6. Be aware of cats seeking warmth under vehicle hoods. Try knocking on the hood of your car to scare them away before starting the engine. 7. Don’t let your dog off leash especially during a snowstorm. They can easily lose their scent and get lost. 8. A warm place to sleep. Ensure your pet has a thick cozy bed or blanket away from any drafts and off the cold floor. 9. Dress for the weather. Use booties and winter sweaters to help keep your
pets warm during outdoor excursions. 10. Prepare an emergency pet survival kit. You never know when a storm

Open dampers are akin to open windows, allowing plenty of cold air to enter a home. The DOE recommends opening dampers in the bottom of the firebox when using the fireplace. Brace Yourself For Winter
Protect your vehicle from snow and ice Scrapers should only be used on windows and not on the body of the car. Winter can be an unforgiving season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn,
replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. • Check that all of the vehicle’s lights are operational so your car can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer fluid with one that will not freeze in cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer system routinely and clear
out any blockages of ice or debris. While addressing windshield washer fluid, also replace worn out windshield wiper blades with ones that can withstand snow and icy weather. • A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against road salt, snow, sleet, and rain. Try a polymer wax to protect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car
and gradually wear away at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car’s paint, and that can contribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. • Have your tires’ alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over pothole-ridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get
everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as weather changes can affect tire pressure and strength. • Use a soft snow brush or a foam brush to clear snow off of the car. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you
might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces. • Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter.

Light and decorate the walkway to your porch with spooky paper bag characters on Halloween night. This clever monster patrol is a takeoff of traditional luminaries, but instead of using a candle, a simple flashlight lights the path to tricks and treats at your doorstep. Or, if you are having a party, set them on a windowsill to peer at costumed guests. So, what will they be? A cat? Goofy alien? Frankenstein? You’ll have time to decide as you cut and paste using these supplies: — Standard-size brown or bright-colored lunch bags — Craft foam sheets or poster board — Yarn, pipe cleaners, charms, ribbon, glitter, beads — Scissors — Glue — Hole punch (optional) — Inexpensive standard-size, plastic, lightweight flashlights — Rubber bands Here’s the fun: For each character, cut out craft foam sheets or poster board in eyes, nose and mouth shapes. Cut out holes in the middle of the eye and mouth pieces to eventually allow light to shine through. Glue the features to the front of the bag. When dry, an adult
• On Nov. 8, 1847, Bram Stoker, author of the horror novel “Dracula,” is born in Ireland. The concept of vampires didn’t originate with Stoker. John William Polidori’s 1819 short story “The Vampyre” is credited with kick-starting the vampire genre. • On Nov. 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but handily defeated the three other candidates. • On Nov. 11, 1918, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, the Great War ends as Germany, faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies. The First World War left 9 million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded. • On Nov. 9, 1965, the largest power failure in U.S. history occurs as all of New York state and portions of seven neighboring states and eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. All together, 30 million people were affected by the blackout. • On Nov. 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sinks in a Lake Superior storm, taking all 29 crew members with her. The 729-foot-long freighter, once the largest and fastest ship on the Great Lakes, now lies under 530 feet of water.
may use a small, sharp scissors or a craft knife to cut out the center of the eyes and mouth on the bag. Let the kids add the details. Glue on rickrack eyebrows, attach lightweight junk jewelry earrings or pipe-cleaner antennae, depending on what you are creating. Add some glitter for cheeks or outline lips with shiny beads. And don’t forget goofy hair. Add braided yarn and fashion a major ‘do. It’s also fun to use a hole punch to make addi-
tional features or patterns that will be revealed when the flashlight is turned on. When complete, carefully slip it over the top of the flashlight with a rubber band, just above the switch. Line up your own monster patrol outside at dusk and flip on flashlights before ghosts and goblins appear at your doorstep. TIP: If your child is afraid of the dark, make a nightlight together using the steps above to create a comforting character such as an angel, a puppy or a
bunny with felt ears. Place this “bedtime buddy” by his bed, and he can switch it on and off when he wishes. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” (PG-13) — It’s another go-round of the super-cute jukebox musical “Mamma Mia!” featuring the songs of Swedish supergroup ABBA. As Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) prepares to reopen her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) renovated boutique hotel, we time-travel back to 1979, when Donna (played in flashback by Lily James) graduated Oxford and swags through Europe, romancing three lovely suitors along the way — one of whom is Sophie’s dad. If you were charmed by the original, you’ll love this follow-up, which includes all of the original cast plus young versions, too. And, in the piece de resistance, Cher makes an appearance as Sophie’s grandmamma — singing “Fernando” no less! “Sorry to Bother You” (R) — This fresh and inventive comedy-fantasy stars LaKeith Stanfield as Cassius “Cash” Green, a struggling young black man who goes to work in telemarketing. After he gets a hot tip (if you want to get anywhere in telesales, you need to use your
Lily James in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” “white” voice), he is catapulted to the position of “power caller,” hawking an illustrious and dubious product in return for a filthy amount of compensation. And then things get crazy. The film marries subversively thoughtprovoking issues with bellyaching absurdity, and it does so seamlessly. Tessa Thompson plays Cash’s revolutionary girlfriend Detroit, and there are choice roles for Armie Hammer, Danny Glover, Terry Crews and more. “I Am Vengeance” (R) — Stu Bennett, perhaps better known as the WWE’s Wade Barrett, headlines this muddled British military mystery/action flick as John Gold. After learning that his best friend and his family were murdered, Gold heads on down to his home town of Devotion to unmask the perpetrator. It’s like the director took a deck of cards, each card labeled with a genre trope

— Special Forces hero, bad guy in a well-defended compound, war profiteers who get their comeuppance — and drew as many cards as he needed to complete this movie. It rings so many bells that you can’t enjoy it for all the noise. Despite that, “Vengeance 2” is filming as we speak. “Patient Zero” (R) — It’s the zombie apocalypse you’ve been warned about: a supervirus that changes poor, tragic humans into aggressive, highly intelligent, voracious killers. A group of untainted people live underground in a nuclear silo, their scientists searching for patient zero, whom they need in order to reverse-engineer a cure that will make the world safe again. The searchers are headed up by Dr. Rose (Natalie Dormer) and Morgan (Matt Smith), who was bitten but not zombiefied — so, he can communicate with the infectious ragers. When an infected professor (Stanley Tucci) is brought in for interrogation, he posits the theory that this is cleansing evolution, not regression.
