By Dana Jackson Q: Is it true that Martina McBride has a cooking show? So many singers and actors are putting out cookbooks or have their own TV shows on the Food Network. I enjoy her music, but what kind of experience does Martina have in the kitchen? — Daisy G. A: You’re right in that country music star Martina McBride is the latest to demonstrate her way around a saucepan. She follows in the footsteps of Trisha Yearwood by having a culinary show on the Food Network.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL While discussing the upcoming Intimates fashion show with Ridge, Brooke became noticeably distracted from worrying about Bill. Ridge finally became concerned when Brooke confessed that Bill might know about his bribe. From a distance, Emma watched Zoe and Xander flirt. Zoe met Xander’s Uncle Julius and

• On Nov. 19, 1863, at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most memorable speeches in American history. In just 272 words, Lincoln reminded a warweary public why the Union had to fight, and win, the Civil War. • On Nov. 21, 1877, Thomas Edison announces his invention of the phonograph, a way to record and play back sound. He used a stylus on a tinfoil cylinder to play back a song he had recorded, “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” • On Nov. 24, 1932, the FBI crime lab officially opens in Washington, D.C. The single room lab, chosen because it had a sink, had scant equipment and was used primarily as a public relations tool. • On Nov. 20, 1967, San Jose State College students demonstrate against Dow Chemical, the maker of napalm. Napalm was an acronym derived from naphthetic and palmic acids, whose salts were

“Martina’s Table” premieres Sunday, Nov. 18, at 12 p.m. ET. She has always loved cooking, and her recipes are inspired by her Midwestern roots. Upcoming episodes will see Martina creating a buffet-style menu for her band and road crew, and preparing a full Thanksgiving menu. Her superstar friends Faith Hill and Sheryl Crow also will be featured. Q: Actor Nathan Fillion played Castle on the TV series of the same name, yet his picture is on the cover of books that [Richard] Castle wrote. Can you clarify? — B.L.C. A: The novels that you see by Richard Castle are a tie-in with the hit show “Castle,” which ran from 2009 to 2016. As you know, Richard Castle is the name Aunt Vivienne before the fashion show. Sally’s Aunt Shirley arrived to support her. Steffy modeled the showstopper, and the Intimates fashion line was declared a success. Katie saved Ridge mid-interview when his mind began wandering. Brooke tried to tell Bill that he should be spending time with his son instead of digging up information about the trial. Zoe confided in a sympathetic Wyatt about her relationship woes. Wait to See: Pam’s clash with Quinn triggers memories from her past. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Chloe dropped a bombshell at Rex and Sarah’s engagement party. Belle used to make the jellied gasoline — napalm — used in flame-throwers and bombs. • On Nov. 23, 1972, secret peace talks resume in Paris between Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho, the North Vietnamese representative. The talks deadlocked weeks later, leading President Richard Nixon to order the massive “Christmas bombing” campaign to break the impasse. • On Nov. 25, 1986, Attorney General Edwin Meese reveals that proceeds from arms sales to Iran were illegally diverted to the anti-communist Contras in Nicaragua. President Ronald Reagan accepted the resignation of his national security adviser, Vice Admiral John Poindexter, and fired Lt. Col. Oliver North, a Poindexter aide. • On Nov. 22, 2002, the James Bond movie “Die Another Day,” starring

Martina McBride of Nathan Fillion’s character, and by having his picture somewhere on the book covers, it draws attention to them and increases sales. The mysteries are

said, however, that when Fillion would appear at book signings as the “author,” if asked by fans he would always be truthful and tell them that he was not the “real” author. The books continue even though the TV series has ended. The next novel is “Crashing Heat,” which is set for a 2019 release. Q: How has Demi Lovato been doing since her overdose a few months ago? Is she out of rehab? — Janelle P. A: As of the end of October, singer Lovato has been in rehab for 90 days, which is great because she really needs it to work this time. She was found unconscious July 24 in her home, and paramedics had to administer the life-saving drug Narcan. She issued a statement

to her fans just a few weeks into her recovery: “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.” Lovato also was one of the first major celebrities to speak openly about her mental-health issues. Back in 2010, after finally being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she stated she had suicidal thoughts as young as age 7 (when she was a regular on the children’s series “Barney”). She has since established the Lovato Treatment Scholarship, which provides mental-health care for those who cannot normally afford it. Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com!

The future of farming

The future of agriculture is sitting in school right now, and Grain Millers Harvest Showdown had school tours giving kids the chance to learn all about farming, including using VR and learning how someone can test the quality of Canola.

Coulee near Whitewood named for veteran A beautiful coulee along Pipestone Creek, south of the Town of Whitewood, has been named after Lance Corporal Wilfred Jordens, a Saskatchewan son and brave fallen Canadian solider of the First World War. “Through the GeoMemorial Commemorative Naming Program, the Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to announce the naming of Jordens Coulee,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “Jordens Coulee will honour the legacy of Lance Corporal Wilfred Jordens, who left our province to serve and ultimately, sacrificed his life for our freedom.” Jordens was born in Lebret on January 16, 1896. He was farming near Whitewood when he enlisted in 1915. He served with the 28th Battalion, Canadian Infantry – Saskatchewan Regiment and was killed in action on August 21, 1917 at the age of 21. His body was never found and likely remains interred on

Lance Corporal Wilfred Jordens the battlefield with more than 11,000 fallen Canadians, who along with Lance Corporal Wilfred Jordens are remembered with honour on the Vimy Memorial at Arras, Pas De Calais, France. “We know that Wilfred Jordens will rest eternally in the soil

of Europe alongside the other Canadians with whom he so gallantly fought,” nephew and nominator Thomas Jordens Sr. said. “Through the GeoMemorial program, the official naming of this coulee enables the story of Wilfred’s service and sacrifice to live on in the area of Saskatchewan he called home.” The GeoMemorial Commemorative Naming Program was established in 1947 and is designed to honour Saskatchewan military personnel, police officers, emergency responders and others killed while serving our country or province. Since its inception, nearly 4,000 geographical features, such as lakes, hills, and valleys, have been named across Saskatchewan. as winter vegetables. Winter squash are picked when they are fully mature, and they have a thick, inedible skin. This thick skin provides a protective covering for the squash and allows for a long storage life. Winter squash can be stored for three months or longer in a cool, dry place, preferably in a single layer. Every part of the squash plant can be eaten, including the leaves and tender shoots, which can be cooked in omelets or made into soup. Winter squash are a good source of vitamins A and C, potassium and fiber. One-half cup of cooked winter squash has only 40 calories. Winter squash comes in shapes round and elongated, scalloped and pearshaped, with flesh that ranges from golden-yellow to brilliant orange. Most winter squashes are vinetype plants whose fruits are harvested when fully mature. They take longer to mature than summer squash (three months or more) and are best harvested once the cool weather of fall sets in. Some of the most popu-

Winter squash are prominently displayed at grocery stores in the fall and winter months, but many shoppers pass them by because they don’t know what to do with them. Winter squash are easy to prepare and are a healthy addition to any meal. The Cucurbitaceae family is the Latin name for gourds, pumpkins and squash. The terms Summer and Winter can be deceptive and are based only on current usage, not on actuality. Summer squash is in the market all winter, and Winter squash is available in late summer and fall, as well as winter. This terminology was never meant to confuse — it dates to a time when the seasons were more crucial to man’s survival. Vegetables that would keep until December became known

lar types of winter squash are butternut, spaghetti, acorn squash and delicata. Butternut squash is tan in color and has a long, bell-like shape. Spaghetti squash is oblong or oval in shape and yellow in color. Acorn squash is actually shaped like an acorn. It is dark green in color and has a ridged rind or skin. Delicata squash is oblong, ridged, yellow and green. The skin is soft and edible. When shopping, look for squash that are heavy for their size, free of soft spots and have a dull sheen (a shiny skin is an indicator the squash is not fully mature). All winter squash bakes

well. Cut the squash in two (be sure to use a sharp, heavy-duty knife if the squash has a hard shell), scoop out the seeds and brush the cut surface with oil. Place cut side down in a baking dish with 1/4 cup of water. Bake uncovered at 350 F until the flesh is soft. Once butternut or acorn squash is cooked and cooled, it can be peeled away from the skin, cut into cubes, and used in soups, stews and casseroles along with other vegetables. Butternut or acorn squash can be used interchangeably in recipes. Spaghetti squash is the exception. Once cooked, use a fork to peel the flesh away from the skin. It looks just like spaghetti

as it peels away. You can serve it with any type of pasta sauce, in the same way you would serve spaghetti noodles. Delicata squash is the easiest squash to prep and cook because of its soft, edible skin. It contains seeds in the center, but they can easily be removed by scraping them out with a spoon. This delicious recipe for Maple-Garlic Delicata Squash Oven Fries is a wonderful side dish on a cold winter’s day! MAPLE-GARLIC DELICATA SQUASH OVEN FRIES •1 large or 2 small delicata squash •2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil •1 tablespoon pure maple syrup or agave syrup •1 garlic clove, crushed or minced •1 teaspoon sea salt Heat oven to 375 F and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Place the pan in the oven to provide even roasting on the top and bottom of the squash. Cut the ends off the delicata squash, halve it lengthwise, scrape the seeds out (using a small

spoon) and slice each half into thin half-moons. Combine the olive oil, maple syrup, garlic and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt in a medium-sized mixing bowl, then add the delicata and toss until it is evenly coated with the oil mixture. Remove the hot pan from the oven and carefully arrange the squash in a single layer on the lined baking sheet. Roast for about 15 minutes, then stir the squash and rotate the pan. Continue to roast the squash for another 15 minutes until the it starts to turn brown and crispy. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt and serve immediately. Serves 4. DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of HPV vaccine for boys? — L.P.B. ANSWER: There are risks and benefits to the individual, but also benefits to society. The HPV vaccine should really be considered an anticancer vaccine, since its goal is to reduce infection from the kinds of human papilloma virus strains that can lead to cancer. Cervical cancer is the most common HPV-related cancer, but some throat, anal and genital cancers also are HPV-related. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are about 30,000 HPV-related cancers in the U.S. annually. It is possible but unproven that the HPV vaccine will provide protection against some or all of these. When given to girls or women who have not been infected with HPV, the HPV vaccine is nearly 100 percent effective at preventing persistent infection with the strains most likely to lead to cancer. In males age 16-26 years, the efficacy of the vaccine at preventing high-risk HPVrelated warts was about 90 percent. However, the HPV vaccine is relatively new, and it is not clear how long immunity will last. It has been proven to last only eight to nine years, but studies looking at protection up to 15 years are ongoing. It is possible that additional boosters may be necessary. The most serious risk of HPV vaccine is anaphylaxis, a possibly fatal allergic reaction. There have been 36 cases of anaphylaxis reported in the world literature and through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting system, according to the Institute of Medicine’s 2012 report on adverse effects of vaccines. There have been 67 million doses given, with a 0.003 percent rate of all adverse events, 90 percent of which were not considered seri-

ers. Since essentially all cases of cervical cancer are HPV-related, males are the most common source of infection (although it can be transmitted female to female). By vaccinating your boy, you are reducing his risk of developing HPV infection and might be decreasing his risk of several types of HPV-related cancer, at a small risk of an adverse

ous. The most common nonserious adverse events in men were redness and soreness at the injection site, dizziness, headache and fainting. Among the adverse events considered serious, the most common were headache, nausea, vomiting and fever. The societal benefit to vaccinating boys is that they are less likely to spread infection to oth-

event, which is usually minor. However, probably the most compelling reason is to protect your son’s future sexual partners. Put in the starkest terms, you are reducing the risk that your future daughter-inlaw will develop cervical cancer. DR. ROACH WRITES: Several people wrote to me about the symptom of burping. One physician recalled

several cases where burping, not chest discomfort, was the major sign of a heart blockage. A reader observed belching in a family member who was later diagnosed with stomach cancer, and another noted gastroparesis as the cause. I think these are all unlikely but possible causes to be considered when the cause can’t be found and symptoms persist.

Just in time for Thanksgiving and December holiday gatherings, stylish mini pumpkins can star in stripes, white and various shades of orange for eye-catching place settings and centerpieces when you glue moss and embed living succulents on top. Give your kids the job of keeping succulents misted every few days as the plants root into the moss, and enjoy the creations in your home now and into the new year. When the mini pumpkins soften and age, toss them in the compost bin and pot the succulents indoors in soil in a flowerpot to grow in bright sunlight or outdoors in a frost-free garden bed. Get older kids involved in creating the mini succulent pumpkins by swirling the nontoxic sticky glue or a glue gun, handling the wiry moss and arranging different varieties of succulents and add-ins make for artful fun. Here’s what you’ll need: — One clean pumpkin with a flat-top surface. — Water-soluble white glue that dries clear, such as Mod Podge Matte finish or a low-temp glue gun. — Sphagnum moss, available in garden centers or craft stores. — Several succulents. Use cuttings from your garden or purchase at garden

centers. — Natural add-ons such as seedpods, acorns, tiny pine cones, eucalyptus. Here’s the fun: 1. Set mini pumpkin on a newspaper-covered work surface. Remove stem with clippers, being careful not to cut into the pumpkin. 2. Drizzle glue around the top area of the pumpkin in swirls. Cover with moss, about 1/2-inch thick, pressing firmly in place. Let dry. 3. Remove roots and soil from the succulents. Dip short stems into glue and poke into the moss. For balance, place a tall succulent for a focal point near the center and add remaining succulents and add-ons around it over the moss. An adult or older child may use a glue gun to affix the add-ons, if you prefer. Care tips: Set the pumpkin on a saucer, trivet or tray. Mist

succulents and moss regularly, making sure the pumpkin remains fresh and dry. The succulents will begin to root through the glue into the moss. Keep away from excessive heat, freezing temperatures and rain. Holiday idea: Use at each guest’s place at the Thanksgiving table. Tuck a name card in each one and set at each plate. Spray paint pumpkins in gold or silver for December holiday dinners. Guests may take one home to enjoy into the new year. A mysterious patron seeks to bring back the glory and makes them an offer they can’t refuse: He wants Elastigirl (voiced by Holly Hunter) to be the face of the superhero comeback, which means Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) must take care of the kids, including Jack Jack, with his burgeoning powers, while a moody Violet and Dash navigate normal school life. It’s every bit as good as the first, and director Brad Bird reprises as the delightfully eccentric Edna Mode. “Christopher Robin” (PG) — Christopher Robin

It is indeed heartwarming and will appeal to all ages. “BlacKkKlansman” (R) — Set in 1970s Colorado Springs, this dramatic comedy from director Spike Lee is based on an incredibly far-fetched but true-life story: A young police officer named Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) — the first black detective to

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although your energy level is high, be careful not to commit to too many projects at this time. You’ll do better focusing on just a few tasks rather than spreading yourself too thin. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your heart might be leading you in one direction, but pay attention to your keen Bovine intellect. I’m cautioning you to think things through before making any commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your “serious” Twin has been dominant in your life for quite a while. It’s time now to let that “wilder” half take you out for some good times -- perhaps with someone very special. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Career aspects are high for Moon Children who make a good impression. Show people not only what you can already do, but also how you can be more valuable to them in

the future. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Things start to brighten for the Lion’s immediate financial future. But be careful to resist the urge to splurge. You need to tuck something away to help you through another tight period. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Having to do too many tasks in too short a time could lower your mood to just above the grumbling level. But if you handle things one at a time, you’ll get through it all soon enough. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your usually carefully made holiday plans could be subject to change later this month. Use this week to prepare for that possibility by starting a Plan B just in case you need it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about joining a colleague’s plan to solve a workplace problem. Investigate it thoroughly. Otherwise, you

could find yourself in a predicament with other associates. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Slow down that highpaced whirl you’ve been on. Spending quiet time alone or with people you care for can be both physically and spiritually restorative. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Make suggestions, not demands. You’ll be more successful in getting people to follow your lead if you exercise quiet patience instead of strong persuasion to get your ideas across. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You still need more facts before you can make an informed career choice. One note of caution: Be careful about whom you ask for that information; otherwise, you could be misled. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changing situations through the end of the week could lead to some challenging opportunities for those perspicacious Pisceans who know how to make them work to their advantage. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of being both daring and cautious, traits that could make you a research scientist or maybe even a rocket-ship designer.

How did Black Friday begin? Black Friday is seen by many as a shopping extravaganza that begins in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving, offering deep discounts on various items, doorbuster deals and other specials that have customers anxious to raid the aisles. Many believe Black Friday was named for the day retail companies would become profitable

for the year (retailers would record losses in red in and profits in black), but other accounts of the origins of Black Friday differ. Gold Rush One story attributes the name of Black Friday to September 24, 1869, when two speculators created a boom and subsequent bust in the gold market. According to the History Channel, rebel specula-

tors Jay Gould and Jim Fisk attempted to control the nation’s gold market. They hoped to drive the price of gold sky high, relying on a corrupt network that extended from Wall Street and the government of New York City all the way to the family of President Ulysses S. Grant. Eventually, the conspiracy unraveled on what became known as “Black Friday.”

Brotherly Love Other historians say that Black Friday has ties to Philadelphia. According to Bonnie Taylor-Blake, a neuroscience researcher at the University of North Carolina, in the 1950s stores around Philadelphia promoted big sales the day after Thanksgiving when many people were off from work. The sales also were held in advance of the Army/Navy football

game that traditionally took place in Philadelphia on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Stores knew that suburban shoppers and football fans would be milling about town during the extended weekend. As a result, traffic cops and other law enforcement personnel had to work 12-hour shifts to corral the extra foot and vehicle traffic around the city. These cops referred to the day

as “Black Friday.” Despite city officials’ best efforts to remove any negative connotations and rename the day “Big Friday,” the name “Black Friday” stuck and even spread to other areas of the country. Black Friday is a phenomenom that marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, though its history might be rooted in more than just buying gifts for loved ones.

Learn about cataracts to see more clearly Many people take their vision for granted until a problem arises that affects their ability to see. While certain conditions may occur suddenly, others develop more gradually and may not even be noticeable until the problem has progressed significantly. Cataracts is a common vision problem that is often associated with aging. The National Eye Institute says that, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Prevent Blindness America says there are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined. The American Optometric Association defines a cataract as a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye. Depending on its size, cataracts can interfere with normal vision. They typically occur in people over the age of 55. A cataract can be present in one or both eyes. The

lens is responsible for helping to focus light or an image on the retina. In a healthy lens, fluid and protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear, offers NEI. However, as one ages, the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. Over time, this clouding may grow. Researchers also suspect there are other causes to cataracts, such as smoking or diabetes. In addition, wear and tear on the lens can develop into cataract clouding. Significant alcohol consumption, UV radiation, eye surgery, and high myopia also may contribute to cataract formation. All About Vision says the types of cataracts include: • Subcapsular cataract, which occurs at the back of the lens; • Nuclear cataract, which forms deep in the central zone of the lens; and • Cortical cataract, which starts as white opacities in the periphery of the lens and then grows inward.

The Mayo Clinic advises that there are no known methods to prevent cataracts or slow their progression. But choosing a healthy diet full of antioxidants, quitting bad habits like smoking, managing diabetes, and having regular eye examinations can help. It’s also a good idea to wear sunglasses that block against UVA and UVB light when outdoors. Cataracts can cause blurring of vision and even make it difficult to see in bright conditions. Colors may seem faded, night vision may be adversely affected and glare may be problematic. The AOA says that early cataracts typically are not treated and changes to prescriptions may provide temporary visual improvement. If a cataract progresses to the point that it affects one’s ability to perform everyday tasks, surgery in which an artificial lens replaces the natural lens may be necessary. Learn more about cataracts by visiting www.nei.nih. gov, www.aoa.org, or www.allaboutvision.com.

HOLLYWOOD — Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” teams Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton (a struggling former TV Western star who couldn’t make it in films) and Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth (Rick’s longtime stunt double and best friend). Most of the other characters are based on real people from the Helter Skelter reign of terror in 1969 Los Angeles. Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”) and Emile Hirsch play Manson clan victims Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring, while “Billion’s” Damian Lewis is film superstar Steve McQueen. “Beverly Hills 90210’s” Luke Perry plays “Lancer” TV series star Wayne Maunder, Nicholas Hammond is actor Sam Wanamaker, Al Pacino is

Rick Dalton’s agent, Mike Moh is Bruce Lee, Rumor Willis (daughter of Bruce) is actress Joanna Pettet and Dreama Walker is Connie Stevens, to name some of the real people being portrayed. Sounds like a fun film. Brad Pitt has completed the sci-fi thriller “Ad Astra,” with Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga and Donald Sutherland (due May 2), and is producing “The King,” for Netflix, based on Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2,” and “Henry V.” While Shakespeare may not bring young people in, casting Timothee Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, Sean Harris and Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Johnny Depp) surely will! Those of us who remember all the shows now being rebooted not only have the feeling we’ve been there, but

that it was better the first time around. It began with Netflix rebooting “The Gilmore Girls” and “Full House,” then CBS successfully cloned “MacGyver” and “Hawaii Five-0,” but “Murphy Brown” doesn’t seem to have the oomph it once had. “Dynasty,” without a big budget for clothes, seems lackluster. “Magnum P.I.” without Tom Selleck isn’t the same, despite all the crashes and

doubt.” • In an odd coincidence, President Abraham Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy, and President John F. Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln. Kennedy the secretary told Lincoln the president that he shouldn’t go to Ford’s Theatre the night he was shot; Lincoln the secretary tried to con-

vince Kennedy the president not to go on a trip to Dallas, where he was shot. • If you’re like the average man, your beard grows about half an inch every month. • Those who study such things claim that an average bank robber in the United States nets about $4,000 for every job. near-death incidents. “Last Man Standing” moved to Fox when ABC cancelled it, killed off Oscar-nominee Robert Forster (as Tim Allen’s father) and then wrote out Hector Elizondo (his partner in “Outdoor Man”) and lost Molly Ephraim, Allen’s TV daughter, Mandy, who left to do the film “The Front Runner,” in which Hugh Jackman plays former presidential candidate Gary Hart. “The Conners” still revolves around Roseanne, and if it fails ABC can still blame her, even though it fired her. But it’s not over, folks. Pilots have been ordered for reboots of “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer,” “Frasier,” “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” NBC’s “V,” “Grimm,” replacing David Giuntoli with a female “Grimm,” and Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City,” with Laura Linney, Ellen Page • The fastest of all nondomesticated canines, the African wild dog can sprint faster than 40 mph. • Many people make provisions in their wills for their pets; it’s the compassionate thing to do. Singer Dusty Springfield went a bit further than most, though; she specified that her cat was to be fed only imported baby food. Symptoms of Celiac disease Gluten-free diets have garnered substantial attention over the last decade-plus. Perhaps nowhere is the rise of gluten-free diets more evident than at local grocery stores, many of which now devote entire sections to gluten-free products. Some may swear by gluten-free foods, but medical experts note that gluten-free diets are only necessary and beneficial to people with Celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of glu-

ten leads to damage in the small intestine. The Celiac Disease Foundation® notes that the disease affects roughly one in 100 people across the globe and even estimates that 2.5 million Americans are currently undiagnosed and at-risk for long-term health complications. The CDF notes that people are not helpless against Celiac disease. In fact, the CDF, which disseminates information through a free mailing list, recommends men and women stay informed

• irritability and behavioral issues • dental enamel defects of the permanent teeth • delayed growth and puberty • short stature • failure to thrive • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Adults are less likely than children to experience digestive symptoms indicative of Celiac disease. For instance, the CDF notes that only onethird of adults who are ultimately diagnosed with

about the disease, seek immediate care if they suspect they have the disease and learn the symptoms of the disease, which vary between children and adults. Parents who suspect their children have Celiac disease can look for these common symptoms: • abdominal bloating and pain • chronic diarrhea • vomiting • constipation • pale, foul-smelling, or fatty stool • weight loss • fatigue

Celiac experience diarrhea. These symptoms are more likely to appear in adults with Celiac disease: • unexplained irondeficiency anemia • fatigue • bone or joint pain • arthritis • osteoporosis or osteopenia (bone loss) • liver and biliary tract disorders (transaminitis, fatty liver, primary sclerosing cholangitis, etc.) • depression or anxiety • peripheral neuropathy ( tingling, numbness or pain in the hands and feet)

• seizures or migraines • missed menstrual periods • infertility or recurrent miscarriage • canker sores inside the mouth • dermatitis herpetiformis (itchy skin rash) Celiac disease can produce uncomfortable symptoms. But the good news is that a gluten-free diet can effectively resolve symptoms and prevent future complications. More information is available at www.celiac.org.

Poinsettias very popular at Christmas time Christmas trees, Santa Claus, menorahs, and glittering lighting displays are just a few of the many prominent symbols of the holiday season. And while mistletoe might garner more attention and inspire more displays of affection, poinsettias are another prominent sign that the holiday season has arrived. Thanks to its bright red and green colors, the poinsettia is perhaps the ideal holiday plant. But as much as it suits holiday decor and seems tailor-made for that special time of year between Thanksgiving and the first of January, the poinsettia has a reputation that few plants would want. First discovered in Mexico and brought to the United States by Dr. Joel Poinsett, the poinsettia has long been rumored to be poisonous. However, the National Capital

Poison Center notes that poinsettias are not deadly. In fact, the NCPC notes that the rumor that poinsettias are deadly may have been around for more than a century, tracing its origins all the way back to a child who was found dead lying next to a poinsettia plant. The plant was blamed for the child’s death, and even though that blame was misplaced, the stigma stuck. WebMD notes that others trace the false rumors surrounding poinsettias to 1919, when parents blamed the death of their daughter, who they thought had eaten poinsettia leaves, on this ubiquitous holiday plant. Even today, when researchers have long since proven that poinsettias are not deadly, many people still believe they can be fatal if consumed. The NCPC notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets

sary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that. Poinsettias are seemingly everywhere come the holiday season. And because they’re not fatal, celebrants can continue to display these beautiful plants that call to mind the colors of the holiday season.

has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure neces-

The health benefits of avocados Food trends come and go. But one such trend that has seemingly enjoyed more staying power than other flavors of the month is avocado toast, a popular dish that might trace some of that admiration to how easy it is to prepare. The popularity of avocado toast has exploded in recent years, but it has actually been around for decades. Many trace the origins of avocado toast to Australia, though it’s hard for food historians to say with utmost certainty where the dish was first served. Avocado toast might be as healthy as it is popular. Avocados boast a host of health benefits, some of which might surprise even the most ardent devotee of avocado toast. • Avocados are loaded with vitamins. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Nutrient Database, avocados are a great source of numerous vitamins, including C, E, K, and B-6. Avocados also contain beta-carotene, which the human body converts into vitamin A that promotes healthy skin and a strong immune system. • Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues

in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. • Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis. • Avocados may help fight depression. Avocados are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit the body in myriad ways. One of those ways is by helping to reduce the

symptoms of depression. Polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 fatty acids are thought to antagonize

inflammatory cytokines that can contribute to feelings of depression. Trendy foods come

and go, oftentimes falling off the radar when their health benefits are overstated or proven dubious.

However, the documented benefits of avocados may ensure the staying power of avocado toast.

A new and old way to enjoy shrimp Exploring new types of cuisine is one of the joys of cooking. Whether you’re a fan of spicy Indian food or partial to French fare, chances are the journey to finding your favorite flavors will be both enjoyable and insightful, teaching you a little something about history along the way. Take this recipe for “Shrimp Potato Patties” from “Eula Mae’s Cajun Kitchen” by Eula Mae Doré and Marcelle R. Bienvenu. This dish, which works as both a main course and a side dish, can be traced to

Acadians who ventured to Louisiana in the late 18th century. While that was a long time ago, the recipe is just as delicious today as it was then. Shrimp Potato Patties Makes about 2 dozen •6 medium-size red potatoes, peeled and quartered •1⁄2 cup (1 stick) butter •1 cup finely chopped yellow onions •1⁄4 cup chopped celery •1⁄2 cup seeded and chopped red bell peppers •1⁄2 cup seeded and

chopped green bell peppers •1⁄2 cup seeded and chopped yellow bell peppers •3⁄4 teaspoon salt •1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne •1⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1⁄4 teaspoon Tabasco brand pepper sauce •2 pounds medium-size shrimp, peeled, deveined and coarsely ground in a food processor •2 large eggs, well beaten •1⁄4 cup chopped freshly parsley leaves

•1⁄2 cup peanut oil •1⁄2 cup all-purpose flour In a large saucepan, boil the potatoes in lightly salted water to cover until fork tender. Remove from the heat and drain. Transfer them to a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork. Let cool. Melt the butter over medium heat in a mediumsize skillet. Add the onions, celery, bell peppers, salt, cayenne, black pepper, and Tabasco, and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the

Spicy Lime and Cilantro Turkey Fajitas Makes 4 servings

•1 tablespoon paprika •1⁄2 teaspoon onion salt •1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder •1⁄2 teaspoon cayenne pepper •1⁄2 teaspoon fennel seeds, crushed •1⁄2 teaspoon dried thyme •1⁄4 teaspoon white pepper •1 pound turkey tenderloin, butterflied •1 lime, squeezed for juice •1 cup nonfat sour cream •1⁄4 cup thinly sliced green onions •1⁄4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro •1 can (4 ounces) green chiles, drained •1 plum tomato, seeded and finely chopped •1⁄2 teaspoon freshly

at the ready. Try them on every day or so, just to get a bead on whether you’ve been hitting the eggnog too hard or if you need to back away from the cookie plate. Jeans don’t lie.

• Here’s a great recipe substitution: “If you do not have cream, melted vanilla ice cream can be used for icings on cakes or pastries.” — P.B. in North Dakota • “I have four brothers and sisters, and Thanksgiving is always a huge affair. We rotate homes for hosting, but we each take a responsibility for food. A few weeks ahead, we hold a ‘food lottery’ to decide impartially who gets to bring what: side dishes, desserts, etc.

This way, we don’t get stuck in ruts, like always having a certain person do desserts. The surprise factor makes it exciting. The host family is always responsible for the bird.” — K.M. in Massachusetts • “With two preschoolers, I have a rather large collection of artwork. I save papers that are decorated on only one side and use them to write letters to family members. I try to write which child drew the picture and the month and year, but even when I can’t, the papers make very unusual and appreciated stationary.” — M.F. in Oregon • A great way to keep the overindulgence from getting out of hand during the holidays: Keep a snug-fitting pair of jeans

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I went on a weeklong Caribbean cruise with friends and left my cat, “Fuzzy,” with a pet sitter who kept her in her home. The sitter had good references, but a few days after I returned and picked up Fuzzy, I noticed her scratching. Checking her fur, she was riddled with fleas! I’m very unhappy about this — it will be

very difficult to rid her and my apartment of the infestation. Should I ask for my money back from the sitter? — Caroline in Brooklyn DEAR CAROLINE: You certainly should contact the sitter and tell her about the flea infestation. Let her know that Fuzzy didn’t have fleas before she stayed over, and that now she does. The sitter may not have known that fleas were an issue in her home. Perhaps they rode in on another guest cat. So, she’ll certainly need to treat her home before accepting any more pets. She should know that you’re not happy and

that you have to shell out money to treat Fuzzy for fleas. As to whether she should refund your money entirely? It may be up for negotiation. She may offer to refund the difference of the cost of ridding Fuzzy of fleas — so save your receipts from the pet store and veterinarian. Since pet-sitting fees for a weeklong stay can run to hundreds and even thousands of dollars, you may want to consult a lawyer for advice. Chances are you can directly negotiate a refund with the sitter, but it’s good to know all your options, like small claims court, just in case. Roast turkey can be prepared in many different ways. Turkey takes on the flavor of other ingredients in a recipe. As a result, turkey often can be substituted for chicken, pork and even beef in many meals. This recipe for “Spicy Lime and Cilantro Turkey Fajitas,” courtesy of The National Turkey Federation, makes for a flavorful dish that turkey lovers are sure to enjoy. Control the level of heat by adjusting the amount of cayenne pepper and green chilies to taste. This recipe calls for turkey tenderloin, but it can be equally delicious using leftover roasted turkey as well.

In a shallow flat dish, combine the paprika, onion salt, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, fennel, thyme, and white pepper. Rub mixture over the turkey; cover and refrigerate for one hour. Prepare grill for directheat cooking. Grill the turkey, 4 inches from the heat, 5 to 6 minutes per side, turning the turkey tenderloin halfway through the grilling time. Cook until a food thermometer registers 165 F in the thickest part of the tenderloin. Place on a clean serving plate and squeeze the lime juice over the tenderloin. Slice the turkey,

Form the shrimp mixture into patties, using 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 cup of the mixture, depending on what size you desire, and pat lightly with the flour. Cook two to three at a time in the hot oil until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
