“The Meg” (PG-13) — Dr. Zhang (Winston Chao) and his daughter Suyin (Li BingBing) are oceanographers exploring the deepest and most treacherous regions of the Marianas Trench from their underwater facility, Mana One. Members of their crew happen upon a tremendously extra-large shark thought to be extinct: the Megalodon, and are trapped in their submersible. Enter deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham). There
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A project benefits from your organizational skills that get it up and running. Your success leaves a highly favorable impression. Don’t be surprised if you get some positive feedback soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Spend time on practical matters through the end of the week. Then begin shifting your focus to more-artistic pursuits. Resist being overly selfcritical. Just allow yourself to feel free to create. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Restarting those creative projects you had set aside for a while will help provide a much-needed soothing balance to your
will be no Oscar nominations for this film, but it is truth in advertising: a movie about a giant sea creature with jump scares in a dark and creepy underwater environment that includes some snappy one-liners. Comedy relief provided by Rainn Wilson and Page Kennedy. “Mile 22” (R) — Mark Wahlberg is American operative James Silva, part of a black-ops organization called Overwatch, under the direction of James Bishop (John Malkovich). Some serious explosives go missing, and the key to finding them is in a disk held by Li Noor (Iko Uwais), who presents himself at the American consulate and attempts to trade a ticket out of the country for the informa-
hectic life. Besides, it will be like meeting old friends again. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change in plans could make it tough to keep a commitment. But stay with it. You’ll get an A-plus for making the effort to do what’s right and not taking the easy way out by running off. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s enthusiasm for a workplace policy review is admirable. But be sure you know who is really behind the resistance to change before pointing your finger at the wrong person. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You can expect to have to do a lot
tion on the disk. It’s up to Silva and his team to get him to the extraction point — the titular Mile 22, an airstrip with a waiting plane. Goons of all stripes are out to get them as the cross a dangerous urban landscape. The plot is overly complicated by
crosses and double crosses, and Wahlberg eschews his usual dopey but sexy performance in favor of playing it crazy psycho. “Alpha” (PG-13) — The story of man and his best friend, lovingly told and gorgeously directed. Keda (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is the
son of his tribe’s chief, and on the edge of manhood when he is chosen to accompany the tribe’s men on a hunt. Keda is injured and left for dead, then narrowly escapes an attack by a wolf pack, which leaves one of its own for dead. The boy cares for the injured wolf, which he calls Alpha (played by Chuck — a 5-year-old Czechoslovakian wolfdog). As they heal and journey to reunite with their respective packs, they are forever bonded. It’s a moving tale, with thrilling ups and downs that will have your heart pumping and the tears flowing. “Juliet Naked” (R) — This charming rom-com features Rose Byrne as Annie, a lovely lady who’s been in a long-
of work through midweek. Devote the rest of the week to checking your holiday plans in case some need to be adjusted to accommodate changes. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Try to avoid signing on the dotted line in the early part of the week. You need time to study issues that weren’t fully explored. Later in the week might be more favorable for decision-making. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new development could snarl travel schedules or other holiday-linked projects. Some flexibility might be called for to deal with the problems before they get too far out of hand. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Relatives seek your advice on a matter you’d rather not be involved in. If so, use that sage Sagittarian tact to decline the “offer,” so that no one’s
feelings are needlessly hurt. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) A shift in planning direction might help you speed up your progress toward achieving that long-planned goal. Trusted colleagues are ready to offer some valuable support.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected demand for settlement of an old loan could create some pre-holiday anxiety. But you might not really owe it. Check your records thoroughly before remitting payment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to get into the social

term relationship with Duncan (Chris O’Dowd), an obsessed fan of obscure rocker Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke). A decades-old recording of Crowe surfaces as a new acoustic album, and Annie, perhaps to spite Duncan’s obsession, posts a negative online review. Surprisingly, she’s contacted by Crowe, and they begin a courtship of words for those who have already lived a life that comes with regrets and still believe in second chances. Based on the novel by Nick Hornby.

Winter weight season postponed Each year, the amount of weight that trucks can haul increases during the winter months. The winter weight period typically begins November 16 however, the 2018 start date is being delayed due to weather and road structure conditions. Saskatchewan’s winters help to freeze and strengthen roads. As a result, more weight can be transported on provincial highways creating improved efficiency for trucking goods and exporting Saskatchewan products. Currently, roads are
not fully frozen and additional weights could damage pavement and the road structures beneath. Road structures will continue to be monitored throughout the province and winter weights will be implemented as soon as sufficient freezing exists. Truckers are encouraged to learn the latest road restriction orders and related information online at www.saskatchewan.ca/truckingweights or by calling the Highway Hotline in Regina and area at 306-787-7623; Saskatoon and area at 306933-8333; across Canada at
1-888-335-7623; and on the SaskTel Cellular Network at *ROAD. In addition, technical and regulatory information is available from the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol Inquiry Line at 1-866-933-5290. Truck drivers outside of Saskatchewan can call the same line at 306-933-5290. The line operates weekdays, except statuary holidays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Government of Saskatchewan has invested $8.4 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.
Warm weather is delaying when winter weights can travel down Saskatchewan highways.
Seizure of criminal property amendment act introduced The Government of Saskatchewan is taking steps to strengthen the civil forfeiture program by expanding the serious forms of criminal activity that are covered by the Seizure of Criminal Property Act. “We are committed to ensuring property is taken out of the hands of criminals,” Corrections and Policing Minister
Christine Tell said. “These changes will broaden when that can be done and in turn, provide support to victims of crime and other community safety initiatives.” Currently, the Act sets out a number of instances where it is presumed that property is an instrument of unlawful activity, and thus subject to forfeiture. In those instances, an onus
is placed on the defendant to demonstrate that the property should not be subject to forfeiture. The proposed amendments would ensure the following are also covered under the legislation: • Property that was previously subject to a community safety order under The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act;
• Vehicle owners with a history of impaired driving suspensions; • Gang or terrorist activity involving prohibited and restricted firearms; and • Matters involving sexual offences, including sexual offences with child victims. These changes align with approaches that are being explored and imple-

Holiday memories often weave in and out of our lives like a warm tapestry enfolding each member of the family. During any of the winter celebrations, it’s worth a little extra effort to create special times for sharing with one another. Here’s an easy way for your school-age children to start a tradition and set their mark on by weaving memory placemats. The colorful addition to the table setting only requires the basics: paper, scissors
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Ridge and Judge McMullen were extremely worried when they realized they’d been duped. Eric reminded Quinn that Pam was family. In the Spencer office building, Justin played back a recording proving that Ridge and Judge McMullen were in cahoots. Pam conspired to get Donna hired at Forrester so she could drive a wedge between Quinn and Eric. Katie consented when Bill requested an immediate change in the child custody agreement. Wyatt was stunned to learn about Ridge blackmailing the judge and that Katie and Thorne were, technically, complicit. Wait to See: The Forresters, Logans, et al. put aside their grievances for the sake of the holiday. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Gabi pleaded with Stefan to keep her secret. Paul was tempted to read Will’s journal. Ciara confronted Claire about her lies. Chad made a deal with Stefan. Brady confessed the truth to Paul. Rex attempted to reconcile with Sarah. Gabi wrestled with her conscience. Paul confronted Will about his true feelings for Sonny. Rex made a difficult deci-
CUTTING Use a large sheet of colored construction paper for the placemat. Fold in half widthwise. Along the fold, use a ruler and pencil to mark four to six evenly spaced dots. Measure and mark corresponding dots along the opposite edge. Cut through both layers of the placemat, beginning at the fold and ending within 1 inch of the opposite edge. Be creative by varying the straight cuts with zigzags or a wavy design. Now cut construction paper in contrasting colors in nine or 10 12-by-1-inch strips for weaving in and out of the cuts. You might want to make some strips a little wider or narrower.
WEAVING Weave the placemat by feeding one of the strips through the slits. Show your kids how to slip the strips over, then under. When the first row is done, slide the strip to the edge Scotty for help. Laura finally met Sasha. Peter accepted an invitation. Michael and Stella had a heart-toheart talk. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Despite Sharon and Rey’s attempts to stay professional, they found themselves caught between formality and their undeniable chemistry. Despite her worries over Rey’s investigation, Phyllis focused her attention on running Jabot, which included recruiting Dark Horse as a partner for a launch party celebrating the Jaboutiques. However, Billy continued to resist her leadership. Thrilled by how well their relationship was going, Mariah and Tessa moved in together. Rey’s investigation into JT’s murder put more stress on Sharon, Phyllis, Nikki and Victoria. The four women agreed to never meet again as a group. Kyle hired Lola for a catering emergency. Billy and Sharon arrived at the launch party united against self-proclaimed power couple Nick and Phyllis. Wait to See: Abby struggles with Arturo’s past.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a very active, healthy 68-year-old until March, when I was hospitalized for two weeks for bilateral pneumonia. I was told by doctors at the hospital that it would take four to six weeks to get my health back. However, I experienced shortness of breath and bouts of coughing for
months, and insisted on seeing a specialist three weeks ago. A CT scan and bronchoscopy showed symptoms typical of bird lung. We had a cockatiel for 17 years! I am now taking prednisone and ibuprofen, which are helping to clear up the inflammation. I hope to be able to return to work soon. My family doctor and several other doctors I know said that they’d studied this at med school but had never seen it in their practices. I hope this serves as a warning to other people who might be tempted to buy a pet bird or to breed them. I was lucky, but someone in poor health might not have
• On Nov. 26, 1872, the Great Diamond Hoax, one of the most notorious mining swindles of the time, is exposed. Two Kentucky cousins had salted a mine with a few diamonds, and bank financiers rushed to invest. Some of the supposed raw diamonds actually had jewelers’ cut marks. • On Nov. 28, 1914, the New York Stock Exchange reopens for bond trading after being closed nearly four months because of the outbreak of World War I. Stock trading didn’t resume until Dec. 12. • On Dec. 1, 1939, golfing great Lee Trevino is born in Texas. Trevino was known as a prankster. While waiting to start an 18-hole playoff against Jack Nicklaus in the 1971 U.S. Open, Trevino threw a rubber snake at his opponent and then won by three strokes. • On Nov. 27, 1942, guitar legend Jimi Hendrix is born in Seattle. He grew up playing guitar, imi-
tating blues greats like Muddy Waters. Hendrix died in London in 1970, following a drug overdose. He was 27. • On Nov. 29, 1963, one week after President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in a motorcade, President Lyndon Johnson establishes a special commission to investigate the assassination. After 10 months, the Warren Commission concluded that alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. • On Nov. 30, 1989, female serial killer Aileen Wuornos shoots her first victim, Richard Mallory, in Florida. Over the next year she killed six more men before being picked up in a seedy biker bar in 1991. Wuornos confessed to the killings but claimed selfdefense. • On Dec. 2, 2001, the Enron Corporation files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, sparking one of the largest corporate scandals in U.S. history. Its collapse cost investors billions of dollars, wiped out 5,600 jobs and liquidated $2.1 billion in pension plans.

survived the deadly combination of pneumonia and bird lung. ANSWER: “Bird lung” is a term that might refer to either of two possibilities. The first condition is “bird-fanciers lung” — essentially an allergic reaction to bird droppings, feathers and the proteins of various birds. It can look very much like pneumonia, with abnormal chest X-ray findings that can be indistinguishable. The only cure is to get away from the source of the allergens, but prednisone might be necessary in severe cases. It is not an infection. The second possibility is an infection called psittacosis (sit-a-CO-sis), caused by the bacte-
Given your history, I suspect that bird-fancier’s lung, also called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, is more likely. It sounds like your specialist is treating you appropriately. DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that microwaving food can cause the food to lose nutritional value or even to become carcinogenic. Is this true? — S.G.
ANSWER: Not really. Heating food does cause some nutrients, such as vitamin C, to break down. But microwaves don’t do that more than any other cooking method does. In general, the longer a food is kept very hot, the more nutrients are lost. So quick heating keeps in the most nutrients. Quickly steaming is another way. That’s essentially what a microwave does, since it heats water molecules very efficiently, steaming the water contained in food or that you use to rinse it. In fact, microwaving may be better than boiling, since many nutrients can be lost in the water if you just throw it out. As far as carcinogens
A5
(cancer-causing chemicals) go, these are products of very high heat, especially grilling meat. Because microwaves can heat unevenly, some areas of the food can get very hot while others stay cold, which is why it’s best, when microwaving, to cook for a short while and allow the heat to distribute itself before heating further or serving. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. By Dana Jackson Q: Has “Designated Survivor” been cancelled? I haven’t seen it yet this year. I’m hoping it’s just one of the late starting shows. By the way, I agree with reader A.E.B. about the loud music on the [NBC] shows. My wife and I have been complaining about that for years. — Don H., Venice, Florida A: “Designated Survivor,” about a minor cabinet member who becomes president of the

Q: When is the Travel Channel going to change its name to the Supernatural/ Paranormal Channel and stop promoting itself as travel when it hasn’t shown a travel-related show in over a month? If they want to show this kind of programming exclusively, then create a new
channel for it and bring back the Travel Channel we all knew and liked. — Anonymous in Florida A: The Travel Channel is one of several cable networks that barely resemble their former selves. I agree that they should just rename the network if they are going to stick with the supernatural shows, like TLC (originally called The Learning Channel) eventually did. It now focuses on reality shows like “90-Day Fiance” and “Say Yes to the Dress.” Since the Travel Channel’s only “traveling” these days involves driving to the nearest haunted house, your best bet is to seek out other networks. PBS, The Food Network and HGTV are probably
going to be your best bets. HGTV shows glimpses of outdoor scenery and amazing views on “House Hunters International,” “Castle Hunters” and “Beachfront Bargain Hunt.” READERS: I goofed! Thank you to reader Jane L., for pointing out my mistake about which network airs “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med” and “Law & Order: SVU.” They are NBC shows, not ABC. Therefore, if you would like to give your opinion about the distracting music on the above shows, visit www.nbc.com/contact-us, and under “Select the best option,” choose “I have feedback on NBC programming,” then choose which TV show,

Reader Sally R. also corrected me, but she pointed out that some of producer Shonda Rhimes’ dramas (“Grey’s Anatomy,” for example) also are guilty of this, but even worse because the music isn’t just instrumental and that Closed Captioning doesn’t help because the words of the songs compete with the words in the dialogue. HOLLYWOOD — Big news! Sylvester Stallone is taking John Rambo out of mothballs and preparing “Rambo: Last Blood.” But before we see that, Sly has surrounded himself with friends Dolph Lundgren, Sugar Ray Leonard and former wife Brigitte Nielsen for “Creed II,” due Nov. 21. Phylicia Rashad and Milo Ventimiglia round out the cast. And speaking of not giving up the ghost, Disney has heeded the words of critics and fans who thought “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” was bloated, incoherent,
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 18-month-old puppy “Sparks” will go for any sock he sees, shred it to bits and try to swallow it. I take away any sock he gets hold of, and I try to keep all socks put away out of his sight, but I worry that my kids or their friends will accidentally leave out a sock and he’ll get it. How can I train Sparks to not eat socks? — Bev R., via
• “I have two guest bedrooms that hardly get used until holidays. I keep the beds made up, but when I am expecting guests I will usually strip the beds to freshen the sheets and blankets. I toss the sheets into the dryer with a fabric-softener sheet and hang the blanket outside in the sunshine for several hours. It always does the trick, and I don’t need to wash linens that are already clean!” — U.C. in California • According to an eBay survey, more than half of Americans (56 percent) have unused smartphones in their home and nearly half (48 percent) have thrown away a smartphone that they no longer use. repetitive, draining and a rehash of the first four films. It also was the lowest grossing film in the 14-year, $4.5 billion franchise, with a $795 million gross against a $320 million price tag. Disney’s solution is to bring on board Robert Reese and Paul Wernick, who successfully wrote the
two “Deadpool” films that killed it at the box office and with fans, just like “Pirates” used to do. Milo Ventimiglia, rerunning daily in “The Gilmore Girls” and riding high with the hit NBC drama “This Is Us,” will star in the comedy “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” with Kevin Costner, Amanda Seyfried and Gary Cole, due in 2019. Next up for Ventimiglia is the romantic comedy “Second Act,” with Jennifer Lopez, Leah Remini, Vanessa Hudgens and Treat Williams, coming Dec. 21. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon still haven’t settled on a title for the series they’re creating and starring in for Apple, but they’ve settled
email DEAR BEV: You’re right to be concerned, and good job policing Sparks to keep him away from those tempting socks. The shredding is not unusual behavior, because puppies love to chew and destroy things, but swallowing the sock is outside the norm. Does Sparks only try to swallow the sock when you go to take it away from him? If so, he’s guarding it in the same way he guards food, as a resource. Start his training by reinforcing basic obedience commands, especially the “leave it” or “drop it” commands. (Don’t use a sock as a training tool here — train these commands in a fun, sock-free environ-
ment.) Give him a reward, like attention or a tiny treat, each time he successfully obeys the command. Basically, Sparks needs to drop anything in his mouth when you give the command. Make sure his usual hangout or play spaces have dog-safe toys and other safe distractions. Increase the time you spend with him, too. Finally, instruct the rest of the family — and friends who visit — to hide any socks. Put up signs if you have to. It’s best not to leave temptation lying around. why not offer them up for sale. eBay has a kit to make it easy to value and sell your device, or use other local services, like Facebook’s marketplace option or Craigslist. Be sure to factor in shipping or meet in a safe place to conclude your transaction — like a local police substation! • No time for making scratch dinner rolls? Here’s a way to make store-bought rolls look and taste delectable: Reserve a small bit of any fresh herbs you used for seasoning your turkey or dressing. Finely chop it. Brush
warmed rolls with melted butter, and sprinkle with the finely chopped herbs and some flaked salt. • Snow flurries got kids down unexpectedly? Give them a little extra traction on their bike tires with the addition of well-spaced zip ties. About 30 per tire, a couple inches apart. Just be sure they’re not too tight. when he was diagnosed with an often fatal pediatric cancer at 2 years old. Murphy wed photographer David Miller in 2012 and they have two young sons, both born via surrogate. Wonder Woman may be a superhero, but her studio, Warner Brothers, was afraid to open “Wonder Woman: 1984” right behind their “Joker” with Joaquin Phoenix. They’ve moved her from November 2019 to June 2020. Dame Judi Dench

Scams you may not know about (NC) — Most of us know intrinsically not to send money to strangers, but a surprising number of Canadians are subject to money transfer fraud every year. Here, Western Union shares three common scams along with some tips to stay safe and prevent yourself from being victimized: 1. Grandparent scam. A victim is contacted by someone who pretends to be a close family member or a person of authority, like a medical professional or attorney, stating that there
is an urgent emergency. This person asks for a money transfer to be sent immediately so that the issue can be resolved. However, once the money has been received, the fraudster goes silent. To stay safe, let ‘trust, but verify’ be your motto. Before sending money to solve what seems to be an emergency, first verify that it is in fact an emergency. Call or text your family member in question, or another family member. Prepare a list of questions to ask ahead of time to verify their identity and where-
abouts. 2. Robocall scam. A robocall is an automated, pre-recorded audio message. Robocalls are often used to perpetrate immigration or tax scams. In these calls, the victim is informed that they are behind on payments and are threatened with jail time or deportation if they don’t make a lump-sum payment via money transfer or a pre-paid credit card. This, however, is untrue. To stay safe, if you think you’re being called by a robocaller, hang up the phone. Don’t press
any buttons on the call that can “redirect you to a live operator” and don’t dial any other number they suggest. 3. Rental property scam. Many renters use online tools to look at apartments. In these scams, the property “owner” offers a rental at a competitive price and requests a money transfer to cover a “deposit.” The “owner” claims there is a need to move quickly, but once money is sent, is never heard from again. To stay safe, never pay for a property you found online using a
money transfer or send money to anyone you haven’t met in person. Also avoid any listing that pressures you or requires you to act immediately. Fraudsters can be convincing. If you do send money to someone and you realize it’s a scam, alert the authorities and report it to the money transfer provider — the transfer could be stopped if it hasn’t been picked up. smell work in concert. The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food, and more. The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste. The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60. Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors, or those
Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose. With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can

greatly affect daily life. Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depression, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar. Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu, and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help. It’s important to bring up diminished flavors or
smells with a doctor to rule out something more serious and to determine what might help restore pleasure from smells and flavors. An otolaryngologist, or a doctor who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose and throat, may be able to help fix the problem, though some people may be referred to a neurologist or another specialist. Continuing to use one’s sense of smell and taste by cooking, gardening, trying new flavors, and experimenting with different aromas may help slow down the decline these senses. Although age-related loss of taste and smell cannot be reversed, some such cases may be treatable.

by enjoying the many outdoor activities accessible during the winter months. Be prepared with healthy options. Eating a nutrient-rich, wholefoods focused diet will help ensure you’re getting enough fibre, as festive meals and desserts tend to be lower in this indigestible carbohydrate. Fibre is especially important in supporting healthy bowel movements to remove excess waste and toxins from the body. If you’ve been asked to bring an appetizer or side to a soirée, be prepared and make a dish with lots of vegetables or fruits so there will be some healthy options to snack on. Hydration for the win. Seasonal parties, family get-togethers and festive activities may increase your alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a diuretic, which pulls water from the body causing increased urination that can lead to dehydration. Drinking enough water is a vital component to increasing circulation and, in conjunction with fibre, helps to remove toxins from the body. Consider swapping the alcohol for a healthy mocktail alternative or have a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage consumed. Support your microbiome. Probiotic supplements increase good bacteria in the gut and can aid in the health and smooth functioning of the digestive tract. Consider also adding foods into your daily routine, which include sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi and yogurt.

In 1621, a small group of pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts, gathered with the native Wampanoag people to celebrate a successful harvest. They could not have imagined the legacy they were creating for Americans who came after them. Giving thanks was part of the Wampanoag tradition as it was for the pilgrims. After many hardships and hard labor, the pilgrims invited the Wampanoag to join them in feasting and sports in an outpouring of gratitude for the bounty they received. There is surprisingly little recorded about this important event in our history, but it does seem clear that, like our Thanksgiving today, there was a copious amount of food, and the revelry went on for about three days. What we also know, for some certainty, is that many of the foods we most associate with Thanksgiving were not what the first pilgrims prepared. There is a first-hand record, written by E.W. Winslow to a friend in England that gives us some idea
of their menu. He writes that the men brought in large amounts of fowl, like duck and geese. William Bradford, the Plymouth Colony governor, reports that “there was a great store of wild turkeys.” We can believe with a degree of confidence, that the pilgrims and the Wampanoag ate turkey on that first Thanksgiving, and most likely, venison and a variety of fish. Cranberries, herbs and onions were used to stuff the meat and fish. Potatoes probably were not served, but rather turnips and Jerusalem artichokes. There were probably pumpkins, but no pie. The pilgrims didn’t have access to butter, milk or flour for baking. The traditional Thanksgiving menu that most of us think of today is about 200 years younger than the original celebration. Over time, as European farming methods were used by the early settlers, they grew the crops they missed from home. When farm animals and dairy products became available, many of the foods that we now asso-
ciate with Thanksgiving were regularly prepared. My recipe for Smoked Turkey provides some of the flavors from that first Thanksgiving. Using the smoking method to cook the turkey also frees up oven space for your side dishes and desserts. SMOKED TURKEY •1 (8- to 13-pound) turkey, thawed and patted dry SPICE RUB •2 tablespoons onion powder •1 tablespoon paprika •2 teaspoons garlic powder •2 teaspoons kosher salt •2 teaspoons white pepper •1 teaspoon powdered ginger •1 teaspoon powdered sage •1/4 cup vegetable oil Smoking the turkey can be done in an outdoor electric smoker that is specially designed for smoking food or in a covered grill. For the best smoking results for the grill method, use hardwood chips, such as hickory,
apple or maple. Soak them in water for one or two hours. This prevents flareups. Prepare and plug in the electric smoker as directed or light the charcoal smoker while you are prepping the turkey, about 30 minutes before you are ready to start cooking. For food safety reasons, the turkey should be thawed completely and not stuffed. Wash the turkey, remove the giblets and neck, then pat the turkey dry. Mix all dry ingredients together. Dust the inner cavity of the turkey with 2 tablespoons of the dry ingredients. Mix the remaining dry ingredients with the vegetable oil to make a wet rub, or paste, and rub it all over the turkey. Gently separate the skin from the meat of the bird and massage the rub into the meat underneath the skin. Be careful not to remove the skin from the bird. Insert a meat thermometer into the deepest part of the thigh or breast without touching the bone. Cover the turkey with plastic wrap and set it aside while the smoker comes to temperature. Remove plastic wrap and place the turkey in a foil pan on the grill. You can use the drippings from the turkey to flavor your dressing or to make gravy. Close the grill lid or smoker door and allow the turkey to cook for 30-minutes per pound. You will need a second thermometer for

the smoker. The smoker temperature should be maintained between 225 F and 300 F. If you are using a charcoal smoker, add briquettes every hour to 1-1/2 hours to help maintain proper temperatures. It can take up to 12 hours to cook the turkey, depending on the weather, the size of your bird and your equipment. An 8 to 13-pound turkey will take 20-30 minutes per pound to cook. Every time you lift the lid, you add 10 minutes to the cooking time. If the thermometer does not read 140 F in four hours, the turkey should be finished in the oven. Temperatures under 140 degrees for too long allow harmful bacteria to grow. The turkey is done when the temperature on the meat thermometer reaches 165 F. Remove the turkey from the smoker and allow it to rest for 15 minutes before slicing.

Screening methods that can detect cancer early Cancer does not discriminate based on race, gender or age, and many people have been or know someone who has been diagnosed with this potentially deadly disease. Cancer is often unpredictable, but many cancers can be found in the early stages before they have had the chance to metastasize. In many instances, the earlier cancer is detected, the more treatable it is, according to the American Cancer Society. People often wonder what they can do to protect themselves against cancer. Routine screenings are one of the most effective ways to combat cancer. What is a cancer screening? The National Cancer Institute says cancer screenings check for cancer in people who have no symptoms. Common cancer screenings include colonoscopies, sigmoidoscopies, mammograms, Pap tests, visual skin examinations, and any preventative visual or tactile examinations of parts of the body for lumps and abnormalities. Other screening tests can include specific blood tests, such as ProstateSpecific Antigen (PSA) for prostate cancer, CA-125 for ovarian cancer and the alpha-fetoprotein blood test used in conjunction with an ultrasound to detect liver cancer. Cancer screenings are
not always part of annual physicals. However, doctors may suggest screenings based on patients’ family histories or other risk factors. In addition, some doctors may recommend cancer screenings as their patients age, as age is one of the biggest risk factors for many cancers. How people can be health advocates There are more than 200 types of cancer that can cause many different symptoms, advises Cancer Research UK. It is not possible to know them all, but generally people are good at recognizing when they’re feeling normal and when they’re exhibiting symptoms that suggest something is awry. Knowing oneself and knowing when something seems strange can help men and women advocate for their own health. Individuals should feel comfortable addressing their concerns with a physician and asking if screening methods or other tests may be applicable in certain situations. Other cancer tests Because screening and testing comes with certain risks and the possibility for false positives or negatives, not to mention sometimes exorbitant costs, patients and doctors often discuss the pros and cons of cancer screenings before going forward with the tests. Imaging procedures may be used in con-
junction with lab tests to rule out certain cancers. Such procedures include: • CT scan: an x-ray image of internal organs • nuclear scan (radionuclide scan): a specialized radioactive scan to create pictures of bones and organs • ultrasound: use of radio waves to map out internal images • PET scan: use of a tracer injection to map how tissues are working, among other tests
ous about cancer screenings should consult with their doctors and ask pertinent questions about potential side effects, pre-

• It was 20th-century American singer and songwriter Bobbie Gentry who made the following sage observation: “Euphemism is a euphemism for lying.” • In a match between a 200-pound mountain lion and a 20-pound porcupine, the lion is likely to be the loser — and probably will die if it tried to take a bite of the desired prey. • The next time you’re annoyed by a bad case of the hiccups, consider poor Charles Osborne. In 1922, when he was 28 years old, Mr. Osborne got the hiccups. For the next 68 years, he continued to hiccup, finally stopping in 1990, one year before his death at the age of 97. • Marilyn Monroe’s iconic film “Some Like It Hot” (which in 2000 was named the greatest American comedy film of all time by the American Film Institute) originally was titled “Not Tonight, Josephine!” • At one time the Catholic Church consid-

ered it sinful to eat a hot dog. • For a nation based on a foundation of democracy, the U.S. certainly has a lot of states (that were originally colonies, of course) named for British royalty or nobility. The state of Virginia, for instance, was named for Queen Elizabeth I, known as the “Virgin Queen”; and Georgia was named in honor of King George II. King Charles II got both North and South Carolina, while the Duke of York and Albany — later King James II — was honored when the state of New York was named. Even France got in on the action: When explorer Robert de la Salle claimed a large chunk of territory for France in 1682, he named it Louisiana, after King Louis XIV. Thought for the Day: “It is frequently the tragedy of the great artist, as it is of the great scientist, that he frightens the ordinary man.” — Loren Eiseley
