Garden spot Independent Manor has a new garden feature area thanks to the efforts of their social club and the Painted Hand Casino, as the two groups co-operated on a pergola and finishing yard. For those not familiar with the term, “a pergola is an outdoor garden feature forming a shaded walkway, passageway, or sitting area of vertical posts or pillars that usually support cross-beams and a sturdy open lattice, often upon which woody vines are trained,” according to Wikpedia. By Dana Jackson Q: Who sang the song that introduced the Oct. 30 episode of “NCIS”? It sounded quite good. — L.M. A: The song is “Rockin’ Zombie,” originally released in 1960 by the doowop band The Crewnecks. Apparently, they were on several of Dick Clark’s touring shows, but later broke up due to military obligations. It’s hard to believe that
DEAR DR. ROACH: Articles on strokes or TIAs rarely mention that they can be caused by a congenital heart defect. I had a family member with a patent foramen ovale, found at age 54, after he’d had several strokes. He had surgery to repair it and has been well ever since. I would like to know why a PFO isn’t often mentioned or considered. When I see an obituary for a young person who died suddenly, I wonder if there was an undiagnosed hole in the person’s heart. One in 6 people has a hole in the heart; that is a high percentage. I think the public should be educated and made aware of this congenital condition. — J.R. ANSWER:
A
patent
Mark Harmon “NCIS” is now in its 16th season. Mark Harmon is still starring in the crime series, but co-stars Cote de Pablo, Pauley Perrette and Michael Weatherly all foramen ovale (which literally means “open ovalshaped window”) is a remnant of our embryology. The foramen ovale is a small open flap that is necessary to send oxygenated blood from the placenta to the body of the developing fetus. In about 25 percent of people (that’s 1 in 4, even higher than you thought), the “hole” doesn’t completely close. PFO is the most common of the “holes” in the heart (ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defects are the other common ones). A stroke is caused by the death of brain cells. PFOs are certainly implicated in strokes. In general, the younger and healthier the person, the more likely it is that a “cryptogenic” stroke (one with no obvious cause) may be due to a PFO. What is likely is that a blood clot can pass through the foramen ovale and go to the brain’s blood vessel, blocking off blood supply to an area of the brain, causing a stroke. The absolute increase in stroke risk is hard to
have departed. Weatherly now headlines the CBS series “Bull,” which many will be surprised to learn is based on Dr. Phil’s (McGraw) career as a trial consultant before he was discovered by Oprah and eventually landed his own talk show. Q: Where has Margaret Brennan been on “Face the Nation”? I get the show mixed up with “Meet the Press,” so it might be that show. Either way, she hasn’t been on in a while. — D.B. A: You’re correct. Margaret Brennan is the host of CBS’s “Face the Nation,” but she was gone for two months on mater-
nity leave. She recently returned to the set and filmed three back-to-back interviews with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, newly re-elected Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and longtime South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham. Q: I wanted to add to the conversation about remakes. I watched the remake of “The Sound of Music” on PBS recently. I didn’t have a problem with the recasting, but I felt that in order to shorten it, they left out a lot in the development of the characters and their relationships. In the original, there were subtle changes which, to me, made it much more
quantify. For people who have never had a stroke, it is generally not recommended to close the PFO. This surgery has risks, and these risks probably outweigh the small potential benefit. For people who have had a stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke from PFO is higher. One group has created a model (the RoPE score) to help predict the likelihood of recurrent stroke. This can help the clinician examine the benefits of surgical repair of the PFO. Surgery is most likely to benefit younger people without traditional risk factors for stroke.
nal problems. Vinegar is a mild acid (most are about 5 percent acetic acid), which normally isn’t particularly irritating to the skin, and shouldn’t be absorbed. Even if it were, acetic acid is found in the body (it’s an important molecule in several metabolic pathways), and your body can use it as an energy source. There is no reason to be concerned about being exposed to household vinegar.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that letting vinegar touch your skin causes arthritis. Is there any danger in using vinegar as a cleaning agent? — N.J.A. ANSWER: I often get asked whether apple cider vinegar cures arthritis (it doesn’t) or can help relieve symptoms (it might, but there is no good evidence that it does), but I have never heard anyone ask about vinegar touching the skin causing inter-
meaningful and realistic. They also left out two songs in the remake. I especially missed the one where the children put on a puppet show. — Joyce G. A: I think it’s very difficult to improve on the original production of a beloved movie or TV show because, no matter how good the performances are now, nothing is going to recapture the way we felt when we saw the original. As a child, “Grease” and “The Wizard of Oz” were two movies that are forever carved in my memory as The Best, and no matter who wears Sandy’s black pedal pushers or Dorothy’s dress, even if they sing like
an angel, it’s just not going to be the same as the original, to me. Before PBS broadcast its version of “The Sound of Music” this year, NBC aired “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2015 starring Carrie Underwood. It ran 135 minutes and scored very high ratings, prompting NBC and other networks to greenlight more live musicals. According to “People” magazine though, the one that impressed viewers and critics the most was FOX’s live version of my favorite “Grease.” Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com!

Yorkton receives $330,000 from police grants By Devin Wilger Staff Writer The Government of Saskatchewan is continuing to fund police in Yorkton. The municipal police grant provides funding to police services across the province through annual grants. Yorkton will receive $330,000 to fund three existing positions in 2018-19. Mayor Bob Maloney said that
the money is appreciated given the weight that emergency services places on the city’s budget. “The funding helps us provide services. Between police and fire, they’re about 30 per cent of our budget.” Beyond Yorkton, Maloney says that funding the police service has benefits that extend to the surrounding area as well. “If something happens with rural and they need support, they
can call on the city to help out, so the funding helps the region as well.”
“The funding helps us provide services. Between police and fire, they’re about 30 per cent of our budget.”
While emergency services are a significant portion of the city’s budget, Maloney said that it’s important to keep people in the city safe. “It’s an insurance policy, you want to protect your citizens and keep your community as safe as it can be.”

Calder School set for closure at the end of school year By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Calder School has been slated for permanent closure at the end of the current school year. The Good Spirit School Division Board of Education made the final decision on the school’s fate at its regular Board meeting Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, according to a release dated this Monday. At the October meeting the Board passed a motion to undertake the school review process at Calder School in Calder, which had been identified for review based upon the criteria established in Board Policy 17 and The School Division Administration Regulations. “Part of the division’s review process involved providing the School
Community Council (SCC) with a School Review document, which contained data pertaining to enrolment figures, location, transportation considerations, grade configuration, staffing, operational costs, facility standards, program offerings, and extra-curricular activities,” detailed the release. Quintin Robertson, Director of Education with the Good Spirit School Division, said the meeting was the last in a long process. Last year the Board made the recommendation to drop Grade 7 and 8 from the school, with those students to be transferred to Yorkton, or Langenburg depending on where they lived. “The community was not in favour of that,” he said.
This year the decision was to close the school, a
decision Robertson said was based on enrollments. “They’ve been on a steady decline,” he said, adding there are established enrollments levels the province has created for K-to-8 schools, the minimum number being 51. “The most recent enrollment (in Calder) is 20,” he said. “It’s very low. They’ve continually struggled the last decade to meet the threshold.” Good Spirit School Division Board of Education Trustee and Administration were invited to attend an information meeting with Calder School SCC on Oct. 17 at Calder School. The focus of the meeting
was to discuss transportation routes. Robertson explained that the time rural students spend on a bus is also a criteria in terms of any closure, with 90 per cent of affected students having to spend less than 75-minutes on a bus. By adding one new route all affected students will be under the 75-minutes, he said. On Oct. 17, the Calder School SCC passed a motion supporting the Board’s decision to close Calder School. On November 22, 2018 the Good Spirit School Division Board of Education voted to close Calder School at the end of the 2018-19 school year. Calder Mayor Ivan Sobkow said the decision was expected.
“We saw the writing on the wall, that is an understatement I guess,” he said. Sobkow said while he appreciates the number of students is low, they should be higher. He said within the school’s boundary area there are some 45 to 50 students, but some parents have chosen to send their children to Langenburg or Yorkton, and the school division has facilitated that by providing bus service. Still, Sobkow is pragmatic about the situation. “We’re fortunate to have had a school going
Saskatchewan wholesale trade jump in September Wholesale trade in Saskatchewan jumped 11.4 per cent in September 2018 (seasonally adjusted) when compared to September 2017, the second highest percentage increase among the provinces. “This is very good news for Saskatchewan wholesalers,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “This leading indicator signals that businesses are
looking for products for future sales to consumers, showing confidence in our economy.” The value of wholesale trade totalled $2.3 billion in September 2018, up from $2.1 billion in September 2017. Nationally, wholesale trade was up 3.8 per cent year-over-year (seasonally adjusted). On a monthly basis, wholesale

trade value remained steady in Saskatchewan between August 2018 and September 2018 while the national average dropped by 0.5 per cent (seasonally adjusted). Major gains for year-over-year figures were reported for machinery, equipment and supplies, up 12.4 per cent and miscellaneous merchandise, up 11.7 per cent (seasonally adjusted).

as long as it has,” he said, pointing to communities such as Rhein, Ebenezer and MacNutt that lost their schools years ago. Robertson said at present there are two teachers at the Calder School, adding it is the Board’s intention to work with both staff to place them at another school in the Division.

“Crazy Rich Asians” (PG-13) — Based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, “Crazy Rich Asians” is an all-out fantasy rom-com about a regular gal, Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), whose seemingly normal longtime boyfriend takes her East to his best friend’s wedding — and to meet his family. Henry Goulding plays Nick Young, the boyfriend in question — considerate, elegant, with a six-pack that won’t stop. What Rachel doesn’t know is that Nick’s family is, well, crazy rich, and the couple is greeted with non-
stop elaborate displays of ostentatiousness as soon as they hit Singapore. Fierce backstabbing females and handsome playboys flank a disapproving mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh), all on a path to break up the lovebirds. Comedy relief comes from Rachel’s college friend Peik Lin, played by a hilarious Awkwafina. An absolute must-see!
ning unrestrained through the woods and back alleys of their town. It’s all seen through the eyes of the youngest brother, Jonah (Evan Rosado) — on the cusp of 10, with a sensitivity and creativity that both bind him to his family and set him apart. Gorgeously filmed and lovingly cast. “Kin” (PG-13) — As near as I can tell, “Kin,” by twin directors Jonathon and Josh Baker, is two movies unceremoniously jammed into one. Whatever bits didn’t make it into the box were the bits that would have made the combination seamless. Alas, it’s a miss. Myles Truitt plays Eli, a boy who finds a souped-up ray gun in an abandoned warehouse. His is a sci-fi adventure film where he learns to use the weapon and is chased down by some spacemantype bad guys who aim to retrieve it. The other story is about his adopted brother Jimmy (Jack Reznor), fresh out of jail and trying to do the right thing by his little brother, but getting caught up in a beef with drug lord Taylor
“We the Animals” (R) — Raul Castillo and Sheila Vand play Ma and Paps to three wild, unbroken brothers in upstate New York. The young, inexperienced parents unleash their passions and insecurities on the family, and the boys muddle through the haze of Ma’s despair and the uncertainty of Paps’ abandonment and subsequent return, while run-
(James Franco). The brothers go on the lam together, chased by everyone. “Dog Days” (PG) — If you are looking for a cute ensemble romantic comedy with Dogs, Dogs, Dogs, look no further. Set in and around Los Angeles, director Ken Marino follows couples, families and competing personalities — and that’s just the players without fur. It’s a heartwarming study of how man’s best friend shapes us, brings us together and holds our hearts. Stars Vanessa Hudgens, Jon Bass, Rob Corddry, Eva Longoria, Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell, Finn Wolfhard, Tig Notaro, Adam Pally and more. NEW TV RELEASES “Longmire” Season 6 “Fancy Nancy” Volume

Ah, Thanksgiving -cleaning, shopping, cooking and entertaining guests for hours! While Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, I’ve embraced the days that follow, too. I start with my traditional after-Thanksgiving breakfast of leftover turkey, ham, corn and dressing with cranberry sauce. In my opinion, Thanksgiving leftovers are a national treasure. If you handle and store your leftovers properly, you can enjoy them in a variety of ways for several days. During mealtime, do not let the turkey sit out for more than two hours after it has been cooked. For safe storage, remove the stuffing and de-bone the turkey. Store the turkey in shallow containers in the refrigerator because shallow containers allow the turkey to cool faster, preventing growth of harmful bacteria.

Unless you freeze the leftovers, be sure to use the turkey and stuffing within 3-4 days. Leftover gravy should be used within 1-2 days. Other cooked dishes can be stored up to 4 days. Frozen leftovers should be stored at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below and used within 3-4 months. Turkey in gravy or broth, or other cooked turkey dishes can be frozen for 4-6 months. Stuffing and gravy can keep up to 1 month in the freezer. Marking your leftovers with the date and name of the item will help you keep better track of them. Here are a few ideas for using the leftover dishes from your Turkey Day

Over the years, photos, reminders and kitschy magnets have covered my frig door, along with cartoons and sayings. One snippet by humorist Calvin Trillin, often described as “America’s funniest food writer,” held center stage for years. “The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal
has never been found.” I laugh every time I recall the quip — maybe it’s because leftovers feel like a prize when I discover them in the back of the refrigerator. I know I can reheat them with extra dashes of fresh additions, and voila ... a family meal is on the table. If you’ve combed through recipes for your leftover turkey and trimmings, you’ve no doubt a
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! Our 13-year-old dog “Doofie” has decided that the best way to get his supper is to bark nonstop, starting at 2 p.m. He doesn’t stop until he is fed at 5. After dinner, he is
quiet for a few minutes and then starts barking again until 8 p.m. when he gets his pill in some peanut butter. He’s the oldest of five dogs and the others don’t do this. We’ve tried changing his feeding times, adding a little snack between meals, but nothing seems to help. We’re pulling out our hair from his high-pitched barking. What else can we do? — Pammie R., via email DEAR PAMMIE: I feel ya! Nonstop barking can be very stressful for every-
plan in mind to gobble them up. But don’t forget about those “leftover” feast dry goods in your pantry. Like the big bag of cornmeal you bought for making just one batch of cornbread. Use that cornmeal in this easy-to-make meatless tamale casserole. It’s a delicious dish your kids can help prepare by measuring ingredients, beating the eggs and greasing the pan while you chop and saute onions and garlic. Serve this tasty tamaleinspired main course with a lovely, crisp fresh salad, or enjoy it as a side. It makes an ample amount for a family of four, with, yes, plenty of leftovers.
MEATLESS TAMALE CASSEROLE •2 medium onions, chopped •2 cloves garlic, minced •2 tablespoons butter •2 tablespoons oil •1 tablespoon chili powder •1 teaspoon salt •1 - 15-ounce can diced tomatoes (substitute with fire-roasted style, if you prefer) •1 - 4-ounce can diced green chilies •1 - 15-ounce can corn, drained •1 cup milk •3 eggs, beaten •1-1/2 cups yellow cornmeal •1-1/2 cups pitted black olives
•2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese •Sour cream for serving
one. My initial thinking is that Doofie is suffering from separation anxiety; the evening meal is comforting, as is his treat. His fixation on those specific feeding times is interesting, though. Because he’s a senior dog, something else may be contributing to the barking. I think there’s anxiety at work here, but its source is something you’ll need to try and figure out. Take him in for a checkup with the vet and explain what’s happening. Before the visit, keep a log of his behavior for a few days — sometimes this can reveal patterns you hadn’t noticed. The vet may recommend medication to calm him during the afternoon.
Keep his feeding and pill time the same and spend plenty of active time with Doofie between 2 and 5. Take him outside, run through a few training exercises, play tug of
war with his favorite toy — whatever it takes to work off some of his energy and just be there with him. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

What may be an annoyance in a developed country is a major problem in undeveloped areas of the world; Kenton Lee is working on changing that. As a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya, he noticed that many children had the toes cut out of their shoes just so they could fit in their growing feet. After returning home, Lee developed an adjustable sandal that can grow with a child, increasing up to five sizes using a system of snaps. Although the shoe is only available to nonprofits that send them to organizations in need, domestic demand is increasing. •6 cups Homemade Turkey Broth •Salt and pepper •2 cups cooked rice •1-1/2 cups fresh corn kernels •2 cups (1/2-inch chunks) skinless leftover cooked turkey •1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves, chopped In a 4-quart saucepan, melt margarine on medium. • On Dec. 8, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln offers his conciliatory plan for reunification of the United States with his Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. It allowed for a full pardon for and restoration of property to all engaged in the rebellion with the exception of the highest Confederate officials and military leaders. • On Dec. 6, 1933, a federal judge rules that “Ulysses” by James Joyce is not obscene. The book had been banned in both the United States and
England when it came out in 1922. Three years earlier, its serialization in an American review had been cut short by the U.S. Post Office. • On Dec. 5, 1941, John Steinbeck’s nonfiction book “The Sea of Cortez” is published. The book reflects Steinbeck’s serious study of marine biology. He would later use his knowledge of the sea and its creatures in creating Doc, the marine biologist in “Cannery Row” (1945). • On Dec. 4, 1952, heavy smog begins to hover over London. Smoke, soot and sulfur dioxide from the area’s industries and cars were trapped by a highpressure air mass, leading to the deaths of at least 4,000 people, many of whom died in their sleep.
salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper; heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to low and simmer 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir rice and corn into soup; heat to boiling. Stir in turkey and heat through. Remove saucepan from heat; stir in parsley. Makes 4 main-dish servings. TIP: Vary the vegetables with the season: Add a chopped late-summer tomato in the fall, or use frozen corn in the winter. It can enrich everything from soups to stews and sauteed dishes. •Turkey carcass, scraps and neck from roast turkey •2 medium carrots, cut into 2-inch chunks •1 large onion, cut into quarters •1 large stalk celery, cut into 2-inch chunks •1/4 teaspoon dried
thyme •Parsley stems from 1 bunch In 10- to 12-quart stockpot (if you don’t have 1 pot large enough, divide ingredients between 2 smaller ones), combine turkey carcass, cut up if necessary, scraps and neck with carrots, onion, celery, thyme and parsley. Add enough cold water just to cover ingredients; heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, 3 hours. Slowly and carefully pour turkey broth through colander into very large bowl set in sink. Discard
solids. To cool broth quickly before refrigerating, set bowl with broth in sink filled with ice water and stir broth occasionally until cool, adding additional ice if necessary. Cover bowl and refrigerate turkey broth overnight. Spoon off and discard fat. Refrigerate broth up to 3 days, or freeze in 1-quart portions to use up within 6 months. Makes 4-1/2 quarts. HOLLYWOOD — Zac Efron, who showed his musical skills in last year’s “The Greatest Showman,” has completed shooting the comedy “Beach Bum,” with Matthew McConaughey, Isla Fisher and Jonah Hill, for a March 22 release. Efron plays serial killer Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” with Lily Collins, Jim Parsons and John Malkovich (now in post-production), and is headed for “Blood Moon,” with Kate Hudson and Craig Robinson. It may get a name change, as there have been four previous films with the same title. Mel Gibson, worth an estimated $425 million, is making up for the time lost when he was in trouble with four upcoming films. He’s filmed “Professor and the Madman,” with Sean Penn, Jeremy Irvine and Natalie Dormer; the crime thriller “Dragged Across Concrete,” with Vince Vaughn and Don Johnson; the sci-fi action film “Boss Level,” with Naomi Watts, Frank Grillo, Ken Jeong and Rob Gronkowski; and the thriller “Waldo” (for next summer) with Charlie Hunnam. Time seems to heal all wounds. Italian film star Roberto Benigni won a best-actor Oscar for “Life is Beautiful” (1997), climb-
Zac Efron ing over movie stars and seats to get the award from Sophia Loren (wouldn’t you?), then took on the title role, at 50, of “Pinocchio” (which bombed) in 2002. Benigni now plans to try again, this time (at 66) as Geppetto, which shoots in Italy next year. He was last billed behind Woody Allen and Alec Baldwin in Allen’s 2012 film “To Rome With Love.” Emily Blunt, soon to delight in “Mary Poppins Returns” (in theaters Dec. 19), is boarding Dwayne Johnson’s “Jungle Cruise,” with Jack Whitehall and Paul Giamatti (which doesn’t arrive until 2020), while husband John Krasinski is shooting season two of Amazon’s “Jack Ryan” TV series. Warner Brothers and Bradley Cooper, who made “A Star Is Born,” and 20th Century Fox, which made “Bohemian Rhapsody,” have submitted their films for the Golden Globes in the drama category instead of the musical/ comedy category, prefer-
ring not to be lumped with “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again,” Natalie Portman’s “Vox Lux” and comedies. Did you know that “Bohemian Rhapsody’s” Queen composed and performed the score for the 1980 film “Flash Gordon,” with Sam Jones (as Flash), Max Von Sydow and former James Bond Timothy Dalton? “Flash Gordon” was a movie serial from 1936-1938 with Olympic gold medal swimmer Buster Crabbe, and a SyFy series in 2007-08. Now they want to remake it in IMAX and 3D. Sam Jones was discovered by producer Dino DeLaurentis when he saw him on “The Dating Game.” The film barely broke even.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the
demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a coworker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other and potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But per-
ceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with
A19
your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker.
