By Dana Jackson Q: I enjoyed watching the movies “Red” and “Red 2” starring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and MaryLouise Parker. I loved the action, humor, storyline and the entire ensemble. Do you know if they will ever make “Red 3”? — Candi M. A: A sequel isn’t looking good. It’s been five years since “Red 2” came out, and I don’t see anything on the horizon for a third movie. According to an

HOLIDAY BREAD Bake this simple stollen, a quick version of the traditional sweet bread, a day ahead and set it out for everyone to enjoy on Christmas morning with their tea or coffee. Or you can prepare several loaves ahead to freeze. Wrap in foil and seal in freezer-weight plastic bags — they’ll stay good up to a month. •2-1/3 cups all-purpose flour •1/2 cup sugar •1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter or margarine •1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese •1 cup dried tart cherries or other dried fruit, coarsely chopped •1/3 cup pecans, toasted and chopped •1 teaspoon vanilla extract •1/2 teaspoon grated fresh lemon peel •2 large eggs •Confectioners’ sugar (optional) Heat oven to 325 F. article on Deadline.com from 2013, “Red 2” earned a B-plus Cinemascore, which is good and helped persuade people to go out and see it, but it wasn’t a blockbuster. The original “Red” in 2010 was a sleeper hit. The writers of both movies, Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber, have a new film coming in 2019 starring Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Kristen Schaal (“The Last Man on Earth”) about a tough CIA operative who finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-yearold girl. In the meantime, enjoy the two films with the star-studded cast, and keep your fingers crossed for another one someday.

together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. With pastry blender or using two knives scissors-fashion, cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in ricotta, dried cherries, pecans, vanilla, lemon peel and eggs until well-combined. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. With floured hands, gently knead dough two or three times to blend. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 10 by 8 inch oval. Fold oval lengthwise, bringing top half over so that bottom of dough extends by about 1 inch. Place stollen on prepared cookie sheet. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Apparently other viewers must agree with you, because ratings are down. No worries, it’s still a big hit, but it earned its lowest numbers ever over the Thanksgiving holiday. We’ll see if they climb back up in 2019. Q: I haven’t seen any Hollywood gossip sites reporting on Gigi Hadid in a long time. Is she still modeling? — R.R. A: The 21st-century supermodel is still actively employed in front of the camera, having

recently graced the covers of “W” and “Chaos” magazines. Gigi also is a talented designer with a new sneaker named after her for Reebok. She was integral in the design process, putting a new spin on Reebok’s white and black high tops that were popular in the early 1990s. Gigi also has been busy traveling and working with UNICEF. At a time when non-reality network television series were struggling, this tearjerker came out of nowhere and became the show that everyone was talking about. The episode in which Milo Ventimiglia’s character, Jack Pearson, perished in a fire left viewers in shock, wondering how they could kill off such a major character so soon. The solution: flashbacks. “This Is Us” already time-hopped to different eras, so Milo still is heavily

DEAR DR. ROACH: After having several strange-looking “pimples” on my thighs and one on my face, I was told it is lymphomatoid papulosis. One or two people in a million are diagnosed with this. I know that it is not contagious, but what is it? What causes it, how is it treated, and what can I do to avoid these? They take weeks to heal. — R.R. A N S W E R : Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease. It is in the category of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. It is a chronic disease, and lasts years or even decades. The underlying cause is not known exactly, but it is related in many ways to other lymphoproliferative diseases, such as mycosis fungoides and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The cells of the skin lesions you notice have similar genetic rearrangements as lymphoma cells. Fortunately, LyP has an excellent prognosis, although people with LyP are at increased risk for developing one of these serious conditions. The papules of LyP can appear on the extremities or the hands and face, and less commonly on other places on the body. They may start off as small red

papules, get larger and then crust over. Often, several exist at different stages. Diagnosis may not be easy, as it takes an experienced dermatopathologist (pathologist with special training in skin diseases) and enough tissue to look at the genetics of the cells. Treatment is not necessary for every person with LyP. But for those who do require it, one might be ultraviolet-light treatment. More severe cases may require methotrexate, but this needs to be managed by an expert. Experts have recommended six-month visits to evaluate for early signs of enlarging lymph nodes, which might indicate the development of a lymphoproliferative disorder. DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion, as a noninterested party, on laser therapy. I see many ads touting its advantages and success in treating bone-on-bone knee osteoarthritis. My orthopedic doctor recommended knee

replacements on both my knees. I had arthroscopic surgery on the left knee four years ago and was recommended total knee replacement on the right knee about three years ago. How long can I put off surgery, and what is the outlook if I don’t have it done? I am an 80-year-old female in good health, except for the osteoarthritis. I use naproxen when needed. If it works, I think laser therapy would be less pain and downtime. ANSWER: Low-level laser therapy has been studied in people with osteoarthritis, and some of the studies have shown reductions in pain and stiffness. The laser is thought to have an effect on circulation. However, the laser generally has been effective in people with mild to moderate disease, and bone-on-bone is severe. I think laser may help some people, but some of the benefit probably is due to placebo effect. As far as putting off

will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers

your knee replacements, I have been through this many times with my own patients. Some get it done right away; others avoid surgery until they can’t take it any longer, with worsening pain, stiffness and inability to exercise. Most people have told me that they wish they had done the surgery sooner. By the way, I am interested in helping people, but have no conflicts of interest. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but

French-born Nicole Winters enjoys telling the story of serving her favorite chocolate dessert from her childhood at a Christmas party gathering of over 20 friends and family. When her 3-year-old grandson, Jacob, stepped up to the dessert table after the meal, a woman offered him a small bowl and asked, “Would you like some chocolate pudding?” “It’s not pudding, it’s ‘mousse au chocolat’!” he confidently exclaimed

Cooking together is an enjoyable way for me to pass on family food traditions from my background and culture to my children and grandchildren, which I believe is so important.” Since her easy blender version of rich “mousse au chocolat” (chocolate mousse) doesn’t use raw eggs like the traditional French recipe, and it comes together effortlessly in just 10 minutes, it captured my attention for our family holiday menus. “The Equalizer 2” (R) — In the first “Equalizer,” retired CIA agent Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) was a levelheaded hero who calmly tried to save a young woman from a life of exploitation, got driven over the edge, and then methodically dealt with all the riffraff — to the audience’s delight. This followup — again directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Richard Wenk — sees McCall driving a Lyft while meting out part-time justice and back in cahoots with his old friend Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo). When the wrong people take Plummer out, the level-headed hero is replaced by a cold killing machine who’s bent on total vengeance and has the goods to deliver. Alas, you can’t have everything, kids. I had high hopes when I heard Mr. Washington would grace us with a sequel (something he’s not

known for), but it’s not as good as the first one. “Smallfoot” (PG) — They do exist! Channing Tatum voices Migo, a Yeti just trying to figure out life and catch the eye of the village leader’s daughter Meechee (Zendaya). When he accidentally discovers a Smallfoot, and eventually brings one — wisecracking wildlife documentarian Percy Patterson (James Corden) — back to his Yeti village as proof, he finds out that there’s more to human-Yeti relations than existential proof. It’ll take a whole gang to work it out. The message, delivered sweetly and with much mirth, is tolerance and open-hearted acceptance of the unknown. It’ll have you all warm and fuzzy despite its frozen setting. “Colette” (PG-13) — The riveting life of French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette is under exploration in this biopic by director Wash Westmoreland, with Keira Knightley in the title role. As a young country girl married to the notorious Paris rake and self-promotion machine Henry Gauthier-Villars (Dominic West), Colette began writing under her

husband’s pen name Willy, cartel. Abused by crooked publishing loosely auto- police, let down by a corbiographical stories that rupt and useless justice took Paris by storm. Her system, she disappears exploration of sexual identity and gender roles and her struggle to claim ownership of her own words are powerful material that Knightley bears brilliantly. She grows stronger and more angled as Colette’s story and personality progress. “Peppermint” (R) — Jennifer Garner plays Riley North, a mother whose young daughter and husband were gunned down by a drug Keira Knightly in “Colette”

broken and disheartened — but just long enough to hone herself into a serious weapon with a single mission: get the justice she was denied by the police and the courts. Crazed mom goes rogue to exact revenge for her murdered family and stand up for everyone who gets screwed by the system? There’s a lot to work with,

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The arts are a strong part of the Arian aspect, with music becoming more dominant. An important decision looms as a longtime relationship takes an unexpected turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Surrounding yourself with beautiful things helps restore the Taurean soul. Enjoy an art exhibit,

for example. Or redecorate your personal space with something truly splendid. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Some colleagues might try to talk you out of what they insist is a risk, but which you consider an opportunity. As usual, follow your own good sense when making your decision. CANCER (June 21

to July 22) A workplace change you might have worried about soon proves to be highly favorable for the clever Crab who is ready to take advantage of new opportunities opening up. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Congratulations. Your Leonine pride is polished to a dazzling new brilliance thanks to your success in winning support for your new project from even the most doubtful of detractors. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettling rumor about a colleague’s apparently regrettable behavior is

soon proved groundless, allowing you to enjoy the upcoming end-of-year festivities in a happy mood. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your success in helping to create a harmonious environment out of a chaotic situation earns you the admiration of someone who could become an important new presence in your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your Scorpion’s sense of loyalty could find you leading a passionate defense of a loved one you feel is being unfairly treated. The week’s end brings longawaited family news.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your keen instincts are once more on high alert as you find yourself being pressured to make a quick decision about a certain matter. More facts come to light by week’s end. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) An unexpected workplace development could disrupt some family plans. A full explanation, however, averts domestic discord. A financial matter continues to need attention. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Spend time away from distrac-

tions to reassess some recent moves that might not have worked out as you had hoped. What you learn could be invaluable for future decision-making. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recent act of kindness is a reminder of how important your friends are to you. You might want to show your appreciation by hosting a special pre-New Year’s party just for them. BORN THIS WEEK: You always try to do your best, which sometimes causes you to be critical of those who don’t live up to your standards.

Fasting for weight loss and better health Intermediate fasting plans are among today’s most popular diets. Many people embrace fasting as an effective way to shed pounds, reduce risk for various weight-related illnesses and improve overall health. Interest in intermediate fasting is growing, and experts offer varying opinions about the best and safest ways to make the most of this diet strategy. Fasting comes in various forms. With the 5:2 fast, for example, individuals follow a traditional diet for five days of the week. The remaining two days are fast days. Those fast days allow only water as sustenance, but often include caloric intake that does not exceed 500 to 600 calories. Alternate-day fasting is another option, with one day of having normal caloric intake, followed by the next with the 500-calorie limit; rinse and repeat.

Other fasting plans involve timed eating. With the 16:8 diet, people eat whatever they like within a predetermined window of time, typically between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. They then fast for the remaining 16. A study published in the journal Nutrition and Health Aging and led by Krista Varady, an associate professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago, found the 16:8 diet a successful way for obese individuals to lose weight. The study also found that this diet helped to lower blood pressure in participating individuals. On average, when compared with the control trial, those on the 16:8 diet consumed 350 fewer calories and lost 3 percent of their weight. In addition, their blood pressure dropped by an average of seven millimeters of mercury over the length of the study.

In addition to weight loss and improved blood chemistry metrics, fasting may also improve longevity, suggest researchers. An ongoing study by the National Institute on Aging conducted on rhesus monkeys, which share 93 of their genetic makeup with humans, found calorie-restriction diets helped certain monkeys live anywhere from 14 to 17 years longer in captivity.

Restricting calories may activate genes that direct cells to preserve resources and stall out instead of grow. In this state, the cells are resistant to stress and illness. It can take some time

for people to find a fasting plan that works for them. Before the body becomes acclimated to fasting, headaches, hunger pangs, low energy, and mood swings may occur. Eating high-fiber foods can help

a person feel fuller longer. Consuming plenty of water also can help. Always consult with a doctor before beginning a new diet regimen.

HOLLYWOOD — What’s happened to Hollywood? Are there too few new ideas? The latest reboot will be “The Saint,” which began as a series of films from 1938-1941, with Louis Hayward, then George Sanders as Simon Templer. The TV series (1962-1969) starred Roger Moore (who went on to be 007 in seven James Bond films). In 1978 it was revived for TV with Ian Ogilvy, but lasted just one season. In 1997 it was resurrected as a film with Val Kilmer as “The Saint” and turned a nice profit. Last year a forgettable TV film was made starring

Adam Rayner. Now producers plan to bring Templer back to big screens again, with Chris Pratt as “The Saint.” Pratt has “The Lego Movie 2” coming Feb. 8, “The Avengers” sequel due May 3 and “The Kid,” with Ethan Hawke, Dane DeHaan and Adam Baldwin, opening sometime in 2019. Also in production is “The Sopranos” prequel movie, “The Many Saints of Newark.” Without Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini, who died in 2013), producers opted to focus on his uncle Dickey Moltisanti, who was often talked about but never seen in the HBO series. Rising star Alessandro Nivola (“Face/Off,”

Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult opens, followed by “New Mutants” (with a cast of unknowns) in August and “Gambit,” with Channing Tatum, due out in March 2020.

Alessandro Nivola “Disobedience”) will play Moltisanti. And if you’re an “X-Men” fan, get ready. On June 7, “Dark Phoenix,” with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender,

Ryan Reynolds, who scored big with the “Deadpool 2” sequel ($735 million in grosses), has the title role as “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu,” opening May 10. Reynolds is now shooting the Michael Bay film “Six Underground,” with Dave Franco.

Hills 90210” star Luke Perry as Maunder in the Leonardo DiCaprio/Brad Pitt film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Frances Davis was the former wife of jazz legend Miles Davis, the subject of 2016’s “Miles Ahead,” with Emayatzy Corinealdi receiving critical acclaim as Frances to Don Cheadle’s Miles. When I first met Frances she told me she’d been in the ori-

ginal Broadway cast of “West Side Story.” I mentioned that I’d always wondered why Elizabeth Taylor was listed in the cast and she said, “That was me. I was Frances Elizabeth Taylor, but I had to change my name when I moved to Hollywood, there already was an Elizabeth Taylor!” Remember friends and family during the holidays, laugh don’t cry!

Sorry to report the passing last month of two longtime friends: Wayne Maunder (at age 82) and the always glamorous Frances Davis (89). Maunder starred in three TV series, as “Custer” (1967), “Lancer,” with James Stacy (1968-70), and “Chase” (1973-74). It’s ironic that Quentin Tarantino has cast former “Beverly AcornStairlifts_2x28.a28_R0041642918.indd • prod1/kk • mp dec21&28, 2018

Christmas brunch is a holiday tradition at our house, and eggs are always the star of the show. Year after year, eggs have been my choice for a healthy and inexpensive way to feed a crowd. My OvenBaked Omelet recipe is quick and easy to make, and is a crowd-pleaser for breakfast, brunch or a light supper. This Oven-Baked Omelet recipe is an convenient, creative way to prepare and serve a buffetstyle breakfast or brunch for a crowd. I love providing my guests with their choice of different types of pre-cooked meats, diced vegetables and a variety of cheeses to personalize

their omelets. The savory tomato topping and the ingredient selections can be pre-cooked the day before, refrigerated and re-heated to save time. OVEN-BAKED OMELETS The pre-cooked toppings for these oven-baked omelets can be set up buffet style and quickly reheated in the microwave, using an electric skillet or on the stovetop in a sauté pan. •Cooking oil spray, butter or vegetable oil for

sauté and baking pans •6 large Eggland’s Best eggs, separated •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon pepper •1 tablespoon grated onion •3 tablespoons flour •2 tablespoons Italian seasoning •1/2 cup each, precooked meat and vegetable toppings* •Cheese for sprinkling or topping: Parmesan, Cheddar, American, Gouda, Goat cheese, etc. •andouille sausage, salmon, Canadian bacon,

Heat oven to 350 F. Grease two 8-inch round cake pans with cooking oil spray, butter or vegetable oil. Place the pans in the oven to heat. In a large bowl, beat together egg whites and 3/4 teaspoons of the salt with an electric hand mixer until soft peaks form. Do not overbeat. In another bowl, mix the egg yolks, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper, grated onion, flour and Italian seasoning. Beat until the mixture is thick and thoroughly blended. Gently fold in the egg whites. Spread mixture in the hot cake pans. Bake for 15 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Use a knife to loosen the omelets from the sides

of the pans. Invert the layers, bottom-side down, onto serving plates. Cut the omelets into wedges. Cover the pieces with foil to keep them warm. Have your guests select the pre-cooked meats and vegetables of their choice. Add 1/2 teaspoon oil to medium sauté pan and heat over medium-high heat. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of the pre-made tomato topping per serving to the pan, and heat for 2 minutes over low heat. Add your guest’s topping selections to the hot tomato topping and mix until warm, about 2 minutes. Spoon the topping mixture over the omelet slice. Sprinkle with cheese, if desired. Serve immediately with sliced fruit and hot biscuits or rolls. Serves 12. NOTE: If using a microwave, mix 2 to 3 tablespoons of the tomato topping and your guest’s precooked topping choices together in a bowl. Microcook on high for 1 minute. TOMATO TOPPING:

Skin and food allergies in dogs Allergies can affect anyone, even the family dog. According to the American Kennel Club, various types of allergies can affect dogs. Skin allergies and food allergies can be very unpleasant. And just like their owners, dogs may be vulnerable to environmental allergens like dust, pollen and mold. Learning about allergies and how to recognize them in dogs can help pet owners ensure their fourlegged friends live as happily and as comfortably as possible. Skin allergies The most common type of allergic reactions in dogs, skin allergies, also referred to as “allergic dermatitis,” are caused by flea allergy dermatitis, food allergies or environmental allergies. Flea allergy dermatitis is an allergic reaction to flea bites. Dogs may be allergic to flea saliva, which can make them very itchy,

particularly at the base of their tails. As dogs scratch their itches, their skin can become red and inflamed and may scab over. The AKC notes that itchy skin may also be a byproduct of food allergies or sensitivities to certain foods. In such instances, the most common places dogs will itch are their ears and paws. Itchiness also may be accompanied by gastrointestinal issues. Dogs that only seem to itch their skin during certain times of the year may be dealing with skin allergies resulting from environmental allergens like dust, pollen and mold. The ears and paws are the most commonly affected areas in these instances, though dogs also may feel itchiness in other areas, such as their wrists, ankles, muzzle, underarms, groin, around their eyes, and in between their toes. Food allergies and sensitivities The AKC notes that

food allergies may not be as common as people think. In many instances, food sensitivities are to blame for many symptoms dogs exhibit. If the veterinarian suspects a dog has a food sensitivity, he or she will work with dog owners to identify the ingredient that is causing a reaction. Both food allergies and food sensitivities can trigger gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea and/or vomiting. Skin conditions like hives and facial swelling may be indicative of an allergy. Itchiness, poor skin and coat, and chronic

ear or foot infections are among the symptoms of food sensitivities noted by the AKC. Diagnosing allergies in dogs can be complicated.

Veterinarians may first try to rule out other conditions that may be causing symptoms in your dog. If the vet suspects an allergy, he or she may try to

confirm this by utilizing an elimination diet that restricts what the dog eats for 12 weeks. Learn more about dogs and allergies at www.akc.org.

Explaining the DTaP vaccine Newborns begin receiving vaccinations immediately after they’re born, and vaccination schedules continue for years afterward. One inoculation parents have heard of but may not necessarily understand is the DTaP vaccine. DTaP refers to diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, a collection of serious diseases that are caused by bacteria. • Diphtheria: Diphtheria causes a thick

covering to develop in the back of the throat and can lead to breathing problems, heart failure, paralysis, and even death. • Tetanus: Sometimes referred to as “lockjaw,” tetanus causes muscles to tighten, typically all over the body, and is very painful. The AAP notes that tetanus can lead to death in up to two out of 10 cases. • Pertussis: Pediatricians may refer

to pertussis as “whooping cough,” which can produce weeks-long coughing spells that make it difficult for infants to eat, drink or breathe. Pertussis can lead to other conditions, including pneumonia and seizures, and also may cause brain damage or death. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, tetanus enters the body through cuts or wounds, while diphtheria and pertussis are spread

from person to person. A safer version of the DTP vaccine, DTaP protects most children from diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis throughout childhood and is distributed in five doses at various intervals in a child’s life. Some children, including those who are moderately or severely ill, should wait until they are fully recovered before receiving the DTaP vaccine. In addition, children who

suffer life-threatening allergic reactions after a dose of DTaP or those who develop brain or nervous system disease within a week of receiving a DTaP dose should not receive another dose. When children receive a dose of the DTaP vaccine, parents should pay close attention to how their kids react to the dose. The AAP advises parents speak with their children’s pediatricians if children

have a seizure or collapse after a dose of DTaP, cry nonstop for three hours or more after a dose or develop a fever over 105 F after receiving a dose of the vaccine. Children typically receive their first dose of the DTaP vaccine at two months of age, so parents should bring up any questions or concerns they have with their children’s pediatricians before their kids reach that age.

Managing symptoms of Dyslexia Learning disabilities can make it difficult for kids to reach their full potential. Such disabilities can sometimes be hard to spot, and youngsters might be hesitant to self-report symptoms or problems they’re experiencing out of shame or a fear of being seen as different from their classmates. Dyslexia, which the Child Mind® Institute notes is now part of the diagnosis “specific learning disorder,” an umbrella term that groups together reading, writing and math disorders, is one type of learning disability that can compromise students’ abilities to perform in the classroom. The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity notes that the signs of dyslexia can appear as early as preschool. Such signs may differ depending on the age of the child, but parents can look for the following ones that might

Cash Place CHEQUES CASHED INCOME TAX

indicate the presence of dyslexia. Preschool Preschool-aged children may exhibit various symptoms that may be indicative of dyslexia. Difficulty learning and remembering the names of letters in the alphabet and an inability to recognize letters in their own names are such symptoms. Children who mispronounce familiar words, continue to speak in “baby talk” and experience trouble learning common nursery rhymes also may be experiencing dyslexia. The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity also notes that dyslexia tends to run in families, so parents who had their own difficulties reading and/ or spelling words should pay special attention to how their children handle these tasks. Kindergarten and first grade Children in this age

group who disappear when it is time to read and/or complain about the difficulty of reading may do so because they are dealing with dyslexia. Another potential indicator is reading errors that show no connection to the sounds of the letters on the page. For example, children who say “puppy” when an illustration on a page is a dog. Difficulty sounding out simple words like “cat” also may indicate dyslexia. Second grade through high school

ple, the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity says some may search for a specific word only to end up using a vague term, such as “stuff.” Hesitation when speaking and language peppered with “um’s” is another potential indicator that a child might be

dyslexic. Dyslexia cannot be cured, but it can be overcome. Early screening, diagnosis and intervention can help young people become successful adults. More information is available at www.dyslexia.yale. edu.

Symptoms that appear during these years of a child’s life may include slow, awkward reading; trouble reading familiar words and often compensating by making wild guesses because the child cannot sound out the word; and an unwillingness to read out loud. Kids in this age group who are dealing with dyslexia also may not have a strategy for reading new words. Children in this age group also may exhibit signs of dyslexia through their speech. For exam-

Working on your feet takes a toll (NC) — There has been much discussion about the health risks of sitting all day at work. But jobs that require you to be on your feet most of the time can cause health complications too. Experts say prolonged standing can accelerate and cause a range of problems to your overall health, as well as to your feet and lower limbs. “We all know how much our joints and muscles hurt after spending just one full day on our feet,” says Anthony Harper, a Canadian certified pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. “Years spent standing all day can cause serious issues, including back, knee and hip pain; swelling in the feet and

lower limbs; plantar fasciitis; bunions; varicose veins; and arthritis.” Harper says these issues are compounded as people age, if they are pregnant and if they have experienced past injuries or have pre-existing conditions. People whose jobs require they remain standing in one place, in an awkward position or do repetitive actions further increase the risks. To reduce your risk of a standing-related injury, he recommends these seven tips: Take sitting breaks. Make sure you sit during lunch and coffee breaks as well as during periods when work is quiet. Move around. When you stand still you

are using the same muscles, tendons and ligaments all the time, causing them to get tired and soft tissue injuries to develop. Change positions, walk around and shift your weight from foot to foot so that you use different muscle groups and joints. Wear properly fitted, supportive footwear. Today there are a wide variety of shoe brands that have numerous features to increase your comfort and protect your feet. Consult with a footwear expert to find a brand and style that offer the best features for your needs. Be sure the shoes fit correctly. Consider foot orthotics. Foot orthotics shift weight off high pressure areas, correct biomechanical issues, relieve stress

A17

on joints and help improve posture. But don’t self prescribe. A Canadian certified pedorthist can determine which foot orthotics will benefit you. Save high heels for parties. High heels are not a good choice if you work on your feet, as they shift your weight onto the ball of your foot and squish your toes. Reserve your high heels for special occasions. Make stretching a part of your daily routine. Stretch your calves and hamstrings, flex your knees and circle your hips. Your muscles are working hard for you, so take care of them. Simple ways to save more for retirement It’s never too early to begin saving for retirement. While millions of people have no doubt heard or read those very words before, surveys indicate that few people are taking that lesson to heart. A 2018 survey from Bankrate.com found that 20 percent of Americans don’t save any of their annual income. Things aren’t necessarily rosier in Canada, where the financial institution CIBC reports that 32 percent of people nearing or on the cusp of retiring have nothing saved for retirement. Saving for retirement can seem impossible in households where every dollar counts. But the following are four simple ways to save more for retirement without making

dramatic lifestyle changes. 1. Turn raises into retirement savings. According to the WorldatWork 2018-2019 Salary Budget Survey: Top Level Results, salary budgets in the United States are projected to rise by an average of 3.2 percent in 2019, while those in Canada are expected to rise by 3 percent. Working professionals can save more for retirement by converting some or all their raises into retirement savings. Pre-tax retirement accounts allow working professionals to put aside money before taxes are paid, so weekly paychecks will not be greatly affected if you choose to increase the percentage of your income you deposit into such accounts. Do this

each time you receive a raise and your retirement savings will grow considerably. 2. Put bonuses to work. Professionals who receive bonuses can speak to their employer and request that their retirement contribution rates be increased when bonuses are issued. Many 401(k) retirement plans allow workers to contrib-

ute as much as 80 percent of their paychecks. While that’s not sustainable for most people every pay period, increasing your contribution rate dramatically when your bonus is issued is a great way to save more for retirement. Contribution rates can then be returned to normal the following pay period. 3. Downsize your home.

A Blessed Christmas.

A Season of Goodwill & Beauty. May His love surround you at Christmas time and always, making your spirit bright and your heart content. As we celebrate the reason for the season, we reflect on how fortunate we are to be celebrating this special time of year here at home with all of you. We are so grateful for your fellowship and friendship. God bless you and yours!

Empty nesters nearing retirement age may benefit by downsizing their homes. Doing so can reduce utility bills, property taxes and other expenses, and those savings can then be redirected into retirement accounts. 4. Reinvest tax returns. Working professionals accustomed to receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on

their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, reinvest them into a retirement account. Speak with a financial planner to help you figure out how to accomplish this goal. Even if it requires opening a new account, the long-term benefits or reinvesting returns are substantial.

Tips on how to uncork your bubbly safely Special occasions like birthdays, holidays, and of course, New Year’s Eve, are often enhanced by the inclusion of sparkling beverages. Sipping a chilled glass of bubbly can make everything feel more festive and indulgent. However, those bottles of champagne, cava or prosecco can pack quite a punch — and not just because of their alcohol content. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says each year hundreds of people suffer serious, potentially blinding eye injuries from sparkling wine corks. Town and Country magazine reports that the pressure behind a cork is around 90 psi, which is three times the pressure of most car tires. The AAO says champagne corks can fly out of the bottle at speeds upwards of 50 miles per hour (80.5 km/h). Sometimes that rocketpowered launch can elicit laughs, while other times it can be downright dangerous. It is important to emphasize safety when

uncorking favorite vintages. Expert sommeliers advise following some key techniques so that guests are not ducking for cover the next time a bottle of bubbly is uncorked. • Ensure the bottle is chilled. Sparkling wine should be properly chilled to around 45 F. Should the beverage not be cold enough, the pressure inside the bottle will cause the cork to be released fast and can cause an overly foamy, geyser-like situation. • Remove the wrapping. Champagne and other sparkling products are sealed with foil and a wire cage to keep the cork seated. Remove these first, being careful to hold the cork down in case it spontaneously pops. • Have a towel handy. Drape a dish towel or cloth napkin over the top of the bottle. This muffles the pop and can absorb any spillage. • Twist the bottle. Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle facing away from yourself and anyone in the vicinity. Keep pressure

around the cork while twisting the bottle. If you twist the cork, it could break inside the bottle. Continue to twist until the bottle starts to loosen from the cork and spins freely. Then you can slowly pull the cork away from the bottle. • Keep downward pressure. If you can feel the pressure starting to force the cork out, push against the cork to control its release. By managing the release, you can avoid a sharp “pop” and instead have only a mild hiss of pressure as the carbonation escapes. • Double-pour the bubbly. Only half-fill the glass-

es to allow the foam to subside. Then fill to desired level. Note: Leftover sparkling wine can be saved without losing its fizz. If you don’t have a special device for this purpose, you can use a regular metal spoon. Simply insert the stem of the spoon into the bottle top so the bowl of the spoon faces upwards. Pop the bottle into the refrigerator and the champagne will likely maintain its fizz for a few days. Some suggest chilling and then revitalizing bubbles with some raisins. Give it a try to see what works best.

Potential benefits of a vegan diet A nutritious diet is an integral component of a healthy lifestyle. One of the great things about eating right is there are many ways to do so. A healthy diet that works for some people might not work for others with different tastes, and it doesn’t have to. Eating right can boost immune systems and help people be more productive, and some people even tailor their healthy diets to align with their personal beliefs. One such example

is veganism. Adherents to veganism do not eat or use animal products, and many do so to advocate for the ethical treatment of animals. Regardless of why people choose vegan diets, the potential health benefits of such decisions are myriad. • Shed excess weight: Vegan diets may help people shed excess weight. A 2015 study published in the journal Nutrition found that vegan diets may result in greater weight

loss than more modest recommendations. The vegan diets used in the study did not require participants to limit their caloric intake, though many might have simply by the nature of the vegan diet, which is packed with satisfying foods full of nutrients such as fiber that can help people feel full and maintain that feeling of fullness for long periods of time. • Improve kidney function: Studies have indicated that people with diabetes who replace the

meat in their diets with plant protein may reduce their risk for poor kidney function. One such study, published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, concluded that, while more studies are necessary, substituting soy protein for animal proteins usually decreases hyperfiltration in diabetic subjects and may reduce albumin excretion as well. • Protect against certain cancers: The World Health Organization says that roughly one-third of

all instances of cancer across the globe can be prevented if people make the right lifestyle choices. That includes their choice in diets. Due to the nature of vegan diets, vegans tend to consume considerable amounts of fruits and vegetables. That’s good news, as an analysis of data from the Health Survey for England found that eating seven or more portions of fresh fruits and vegetables every day can reduce a person’s risk of dying from cancer by as much as 15

percent. • Reduce risk for heart disease: Fruits, vegetables and fiber also have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease. A study from researchers in Japan found that intakes of plantbased foods, particularly fruits, were associated with reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease. Vegan diets may necessitate an adjustment period when starting out. But over time, the benefits of such diets are numerous.

How puzzles promote health and wellness Puzzles are fun and entertaining, but their benefits go beyond simple recreation. In fact, playing and solving puzzles on a regular basis can benefit adults and children in various ways. Puzzles often stimulate problem-solving centers in the brain and can improve brain health. Researchers have found that, by completing crossword puzzles, playing challenging games or doing other puzzlerelated activities, individuals may be less likely

to develop brain plaques that have been tied to Alzheimer’s disease. Data published in the Archives of Neurology found a distinct connection between people who exercised their minds with stimulating activities in their early and middle years and brain health. This group had less Beta-amyloid protein uptake in their brains, which is linked to the onset of Alzheimer’s, than those who didn’t engage in puzzles during the same time frame.

Above all, we wish you good health. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Beyond their health benefits, puzzles offer some additional perks. • Puzzles boost vocabulary. Puzzles such as crosswords or codewords/ cryptograms introduce people to new words. This helps people expand their vocabulary and can help them improve their spelling. • Puzzles teach patience. Puzzles can be challenging, and such challenges can promote patience in regard to approaching and realizing goals.

• Puzzles can reinforce lessons. Teaching through puzzle play is an effective way to tap into memory retention while making lessons fun. • Puzzles may improve intelligence. Engaging in puzzles can force players to think and reason using general knowledge, memory, spatial imagery, and logic. These skills help to sharpen intellect over time. Researchers at the University of Michigan

even found that adults could boost their IQs by four points after spending 25 minutes a day doing puzzles. • Puzzles reinforce concentration. Concentration is required to find words hidden in a word search puzzle or to solve a brainteaser. According to data on SelfGrowth.com, puzzles naturally induce a state of creative, focused meditation. • Puzzles improve visu-

al-spatial reasoning. When solving a jigsaw puzzle or working one’s way through a maze, players have to look at different shapes and figure out where they fit within the larger picture. Better visual-spacial skills can help with packing, driving and using a map and can be valuable career tools in fields such as architecture. Puzzles are a fun recreational activity that also can boost brain health.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. The person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in

savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment

matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

The health benefits of eating apples The phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” is a familiar one that many people first heard as children. But some may be surprised to learn the phrase is as factual as it is familiar. Apples are among the most cultivated and consumed foods in the world. They’re also among the healthiest. Medical News Today, a market leader for medical news that is owned and operated by the United Kingdombased healthcare pub-

the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2000, researchers studied more than 9,200 men and women over a 28-year period. Those who ate the most apples during that time had a lower risk for thrombotic stroke, a type of stroke that occurs when a blood clot forms in an artery that supplies blood to the brain. Such blood clots block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain, producing long-term brain damage. • Apples lower levels

lisher Healthline Media, listed apples among its 10 healthiest foods. Apples provide an array of health benefits, lending credence to the notion that consuming one per day might just keep the doctor away. • Apples may reduce risk for stroke. Apples are rich in antioxidants, including quercetin, which researchers have determined can help people lower their risk for thrombotic stroke. In that study, which was published in

Benefits of eating mushrooms (NC) — Mushrooms are one of those items in the produce section that not all of us will pick up. Many people enjoy eating them, while others are still on the fence. But from their range of flavours to their variety of uses, there is a mushroom for everybody. Here are just five reasons to love (and eat) more mushrooms. 1. They can go with anything. Mushrooms are so versatile that you can pair them with any food. You can sautée them for on top of steak, throw some fresh mushrooms in a salad, blend them together with meat for a healthier alternative, and chop some up and toss them in an omelet. 2. You can try a different mushroom every day of the week. Did you know there are seven different types of mushrooms commercially grown in Canada? You can choose between the three primary mushrooms, white button, crimini or portabella, or can mix in a specialty variety, such as enoki, shiitake, oyster or king oyster. 3. Mushrooms are very beneficial for your health. They contain vitamins D and B, potassium and plenty of antioxidants. Thanks to their high fibre count, mushrooms also help support a strong immune system. 4. Mushrooms are a great snack to fill up on. As a low-energy, dense food, they can be effective for reducing daily energy and fat intake while still helping you feel full, so you can keep on track with your healthy lifestyle. 5. The mushroom industry never stops. Fresh mushrooms are grown and harvested and delivered fresh to local stores every day of the year. Not only are you buying fresh, you are also buying local and Canadian. Find more nutritional information, cooking tips and recipe ideas online at mushrooms.ca.

A coconut cookie perfect for the holidays (NC) — This coconut-studded milk chocolate cookie with two layers of buttery dough – one with an added hit of cocoa – makes these slice-and-bake cookies an instant holiday hit. Incorporating milk chocolate with toasted coconut makes them irresistible. “This recipe makes a large batch, but don’t feel like you have to make them all at once – simply thaw frozen dough and then slice and bake,” says Michelle Pennock, executive chef for the President’s Choice Test Kitchen. Two-Toned Chocolate Coconut Cookies Prep time: 45 minutes Cook time: 50 minutes Makes: 5 dozen cookies • 1 cup (250 mL) unsalted country churned butter, softened • 1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar • 1 large egg • 2-1/2 cups (625 mL) all-purpose unbleached flour

• 1/2 tsp (2 mL) baking soda • Half bar (300 g bar) PC Milk Chocolate Coconut, finely chopped (about 1-1/4 cups) • 2 tbsp (25 mL) cocoa powder Line bottom of 8-inch (2 L) square glass baking dish with parchment paper, leaving 1-inch (2.5 cm) overhang on two opposite sides. Set aside. Beat butter with sugar in large bowl using electric hand mixer until fluffy. Beat in egg, scraping down side of bowl. Set aside. Whisk flour with baking soda in separate large bowl. Stir half of flour mixture into butter mixture just until combined. Stir in remaining flour mixture and chocolate just until combined. Remove half of dough to separate large bowl; stir in cocoa powder. Press cocoa dough evenly into bottom of prepared baking dish; press white dough evenly over top. Refrigerate 15 minutes. Lifting with parchment, remove dough from baking

dish and transfer to work surface. Cut dough in half; invert one piece over the other piece so that both white strips are in centre of stack (you should have two thin strips of chocolate dough with one wide white strip in between). Press gently to adhere. Wrap in plastic wrap; refrigerate two hours or up to 24 hours. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Cut dough in half lengthwise to make two 2-inch (5 cm) wide logs. Cut each log crosswise into scant 1/4-inch (5 mm) thick slices. Arrange, 1/2 inch (1 cm) apart, on non-stick cookie sheets or parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Bake, one sheet at a time, until pale golden and tops are no longer shiny; 12 to 14 minutes. Let cool completely on sheets. Chef’s tip: If the dough crumbles when you slice it, let it stand at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes to soften, then try slicing again. chopped •2 garlic cloves, crushed •1 - 14-ounce can plum tomatoes, drained •4 cups chicken stock •Small bunch cilantro •Salt and ground black pepper Using a sharp knife, cut each tortilla into 4 or 5 strips, each measuring about 3⁄4 inches wide. Pour vegetable oil to a depth of 3⁄4 inch into a heavy frying pan. Heat until a small piece of tortilla, added to the oil, floats on the top and bubbles at the edges. Add a few tortilla strips

to the hot oil and fry for a few minutes, until crisp and golden brown all over, turning them occasionally. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a double layer of paper towels. Cook the remaining tortilla strips in the same way. Heat the 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large, heavy pan. Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spatula, until the onion is soft and translucent. Do not let the garlic turn brown or it will give the soup a bitter taste.

Chop the tomatoes using a large, sharp knife and add them to the onion mixture in the pan. Pour in the chicken stock and stir well. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, until the liquid has reduced slightly. Chop the cilantro. Add to the soup, reserving a little to use as a garnish. Season to taste. Place a few of the crisp tortilla pieces in the bottom of four warmed soup bowls. Ladle the soup on top. Sprinkle each portion with the reserved chopped cilantro and serve.

A flavorful twist The holiday season is rife with tradition. Family and friends often gather together around the dining room table to share conversation, memories and good food, making the holidays a special time of year. Home chefs looking to expand their culinary horizons can include this recipe for “Slow Cooker Spiced-Cranberry Pork,” courtesy of The Ohio Pork Council, on their holiday menus. Pork is a versatile protein that pairs well with the tart, holiday-centric flavor of cranberries. Slow Cooker Spiced-Cranberry Pork Serves 8 •3-1⁄2 to 4 pound pork shoulder •1 - 6-oz can jellied cranberry sauce

•2⁄3 cup sugar •3⁄4 cup cranberry juice •2 tablespoons Dijon-style mustard •1-1⁄2 teaspoons ground cloves •1 teaspoon ground black pepper •Salt to taste Trim fat from pork roast, if necessary. Place roast in 4- to 6-quart slow cooker. Use wire whisk to stir together cranberry sauce and sugar in medium bowl. Stir in juice, mustard, cloves and pepper until well combined. Pour cranberry mixture over roast in slow cooker. Cover slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or until pork roast is tender. Season roast to taste with salt; serve juices with roast.

Ways to improve bladder health Most people don’t pay much mind to their bladders unless they find themselves in need of a bathroom while on the road or out and about. Responsible for holding urine for the kidneys, the bladder can be vulnerable to various problems. However, certain lifestyle changes can help the bladder function the way it should. Bladder illnesses The American Society of Clinical Oncology reports an estimated 81,190 adults (62,380 men and 18,810 women) in the

United States will be diagnosed with bladder cancer this year. Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer among men, though it is not the only condition that can affect the bladder. Cystitis, which is an inflammation of the bladder, overactive bladder and urinary incontinence are some of the more common ailments that can affect the bladder. Cystitis is typically caused by a bacterial infection and could be accompanied by urinary tract infection. However,

interstitial cystitis (IC) is an often painful bladder syndrome accompanied by the urgent need to urinate, states WebMD. Overactive bladder is characterized by a sudden urge to urinate. Sometimes the urge can be difficult to control and involuntary loss of urine may occur, advises the Mayo Clinic. Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control. Severity can range from occasional leakage of urine to failure to making it to the toilet in time. The Urology Care Foundation

says between one-quarter and one-third of men and women in the United States suffer from urinary incontinence. Maintaining bladder health Although not all bladder conditions can be avoided, there are many steps people can take to improve the health of their bladders and increase the likelihood of proper functionality. The following are some ways to do just that. • Drink enough fluids. Consuming plenty of water (six to eight 8-ounce glass-

es each day) can help flush contaminants out of the urinary system. • Void completely. Make sure to urinate completely and do not hold in urine for long periods of time. Urine that doesn’t escape can head back to the bladder and bring bacteria with it. • Limit alcohol intake. Alcoholic beverages are diuretics and stimulants, which can produce symptoms of urinary urgency. • Eat adequate fiber. Constipation can put stress on pelvic floor muscles, eventually contributing to dysfunction that affects bladder control. Fiber

decreases the likelihood of feeling constipated. • Perform Kegel exercises. These exercises work the pelvic floor muscles to strengthen them, which can prevent urine from leaking in various situations. • Quit smoking. Cigarette smokers have a two to three times higher risk of bladder cancer than nonsmokers, states the health guide Everyday Health. Quitting now can help the bladder. By making certain lifestyle changes. people can improve their bladder function and health.

Gently toss together crabmeat, olives, feta, dill, vinegar, salt, and pepper in medium bowl. Spoon crabmeat mixture evenly into tomato shells and cover with reserved tomato tops. Cook’s note: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the tomatoes into a storage container. Cover and freeze up to 4 months and toss them into a soup or stew.

DEAR PAW’S: My local shelter has started holding “free” adoption days twice a year. It drops the $100 fee to adopt a pet (although people still need to pay a $10 processing fee, and they get a collar and ID tag with that). Taking care of pets can be expensive, and I think these kinds of promotions attract owners who aren’t going to invest in their new pet and keep them healthy. What do you think about low-cost shelter adoptions? — Colin H., via email

DEAR COLIN: If a lower adoption fee helps shelters find homes for pets, and reduces shelter populations, I’m in favor of it. However, I understand your reservations. In some ways, it’s a gamble that the shelter takes on each new person to come through its door. Will this person be the forever family for a traumatized dog? Can a family with kids care for a cat with special needs? Some shelters vet potential owners before allowing them to adopt, while others follow the more familiar “open adoption” practice, where the criteria are not so strict. Pet adoption fees are not about gatekeeping.

a voucher or coupon for a free vet visit and steeply discounted services like vaccination and deworming. And the fee is far lower than the cost of buy-

These fees cover the cost of caring for animals at the shelter: their food and health care, as well as administration. In return, new owners often receive
