Picnic
Staff Photos by Calvin Daniels
It was supper on the street time in Bredenbury June 4 as the local Lions Club hosted its annual community picnic. A section of Third Avenue in the community was blocked off, adjacent to the downtown playground which was convenient for the younger attendees. While children played, or took rides on a garden tractor pulled trolley, adults could enjoy hotdogs, hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad and watermelon, all for just a donation.
DEAR DR. ROACH: In January 2014, I was diagnosed with a benign
neoplasm of my cerebral meninges (meningioma). I am a healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman. I do not take any medications. The finding was incidental. I have no symptoms from the meningioma. I sometimes feel as if my mental capacity has declined somewhat (such as memory), but I attribute this to the normal aging process. I have been getting an MRI

every year since the diagnosis. The last test showed that the tumor was 2.9 cm by 1.6 cm by 2.7 cm. The mass measured 2.3 cm by 1.3 cm by 2.1 cm when I had the first MRI in 2014. It seems to be slowly growing. What are your thoughts on this? Do you advise surgery at this time? — C.C. ANSWER: A meningioma is a type of brain tumor that arises from the meninges, the lining of the brain. Most of these are benign, although they do range from benign to cancerous. Even the cancerous tumors very rarely spread. The main problem with this type of tumor is that they grow, and there is not a lot of room inside the skull to spare. An enlarg-
ing tumor can compress the brain, and that can lead to symptoms. Depending on the exact location of the tumor, it can cause weakness, loss of vision or loss of hearing or smell. Another common symptom is a seizure. Changes in mental function are less common, but I am very cautious about ascribing symptoms to aging. Although the change in size seems small, the tumor has approximately doubled in size since 2014. That is a clear indication for treatment. It will likely keep growing and cause symptoms. Surgery is a treatment option, as is radiation, but only an expert can make the assessment of what is best in your situation. If the tumor is in a favorable location, most authorities would recommend surgical removal of the tumor. DEAR DR. ROACH: My 59-year-old son has cirrhosis, probably from a blood transfusion he had as a teenager. His gastroenterologist tells him he is two years away from going on the transplant list for a new liver. Do you know if someone with compatible blood could donate a piece of his or her liver? Would that provide him with enough healthy liver? Also, he heard that you
live only about five years with a new liver. Is that true? — B.M. ANSWER: Cirrhosis after a blood transfusion makes me suspect that your son’s liver disease is due to hepatitis C. If that’s the case, his gastroenterologist has had or will have a discussion with him about new treatments for hepatitis C that will hopefully keep him from needing a transplant. However, if he does need a transplant, it can be done from a family member or even from a nonrelated person. There are risks to the donor, but major complications happen in only 1 to 3 percent of cases. The transplant-
ed lobe of the liver does rapidly regenerate. The results for the recipient are comparable to that of deceased organ donors. Only the transplant surgeons can recommend whether a living donor is possible. For adults in your son’s age group, the likelihood of surviving five years after liver transplantation is about 70 percent. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

Birdhouses become cancer fundraiser Elgin Strocien began building birdhouses as a hobby and it turned into a fundraiser for the Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for Cancer - Local Cancer Initiatives Program in 2019. When cancer struck his daughter, Elgin decided to donate $1 from each birdhouse that was sold this year. The Close Cuts ‘Cancer is for the Birds’ fundraiser that ran in April using Strocien’s birdhouse turned out to be very successful raising $1360. All of the funds will be directed to The Health Foundation for the upgrade of the digital mammography equipment at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Birdhouses were available at Haas Nissan by donation, and will continue to be available throughout the year Plans are underway to hold a birdhouse painting event fundraiser in early 2020. Submitted

“Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” (PG-13) — Tyler Perry is back in a swan song for Madea, this time in rural Georgia for a reunion centered around the anniversary of Vianne and Anthony. But the happy occasion is suddenly eclipsed by Anthony’s untimely and inelegant demise. Madea plans a true sendoff, while all around her, family intrigue and shocking secrets erupt. For a PG-13 movie, there sure are a lot of sex jokes; I’d put it more at a PG-16. Perry has said this will be his final Madea movie, dropping the drag in favor of some new projects. For that reason, I was hoping for something a bit more epic. But it wasn’t Madea’s funeral, so maybe we’ll see her again. “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” (NR) — It took Terry Gilliam a couple of decades to get this
epic adventure-comedy off the ground, but it finally makes its way to DVD. Toby (Adam Driver) is an ad-man working unsuccessfully on a commercial. He serendipitously ends up with a copy of his own student film, “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” and travels to the nearby village where it was filmed. There he runs into his lead actor (Jonathan Price), who years later still believes that he truly is Quixote. The actor tags Toby as Sancho Panza, his squire, and the two go off on a time-traveling, reality-bending adventure that explores the effects the student film had on the little village that hosted it. The story is all over the place and requires a high level of commitment to get through, but it’s entertaining and creative. “JT Leroy” (R) — In a ripped-from-the-headlines peek-a-boo, director Justin Kelly explores the story of JT LeRoy, a phantom persona who broke the fourth wall by appearing in public in the 1990s. Author Laura Albert (Laura Dern) wrote under the name JT LeRoy. No problem there,

“The Kid” (R) — There’s no shortage of Billy the Kid mythology in film. Vincent D’Onofrio takes this rich source material for a ride, but this time from the director’s chair. Young teen Rio (Jake Schur) kills his abusive father and runs away with his sister under threat of their vicious uncle (Chris Pratt). They encounter Billy the Kid (Dane DeHaan) and Sherriff Pat Garrett (Ethan Hawke, easily the best performance of the bunch), and tag along, choosing sides and racing demons. Rather than being a revolutionary retelling, it’s a well-acted and well-presented version of a solid story. NEW TV RELEASES “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” Season 1

per cent of oats, barley, and flax are planted. Little rainfall was reported this past week throughout the province, with amounts ranging from 0 to 18 mm in the Rocanville area. Significant rain is needed soon across the province to help with crop growth and emergence as well as with the establishment and growth of hay land and pastures. Topsoil moisture conditions continue to deteriorate across the province
due to strong winds and lack of moisture. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 22 per cent adequate, 47 per cent short and 31 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 18 per cent adequate, 42 per cent short, and 40 per cent very short. Hay and pasture growth has been slow due to little rainfall. The majority of crop conditions range from poor to good across the province. Crop growth is delayed in much of the
province due to the lack of moisture. The majority of crop damage this past week was due to strong winds, insects such as flea beetles and cutworms, and the lack of moisture. Farmers are busy making in-crop pesticide applications to control weeds and insects. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at www. saskatchewan.ca/cropreport.

Three bears sighted in Saltcoats Call the TIPP line at-1-800-667-7561 By Cory Carlick Staff Writer An advisory was put out by the Town of Saltcoats on June 5th regarding three bears. The mother bear and three cubs were reported to have been spotted around Leflay Homestead on the east side. The Ministry of Environment confirmed to Yorkton This Week that a sow and cubs were spotted near Regional Park. The Park, on the municipal level, was expected to put up signage and educate the campers on garbage and other attractants. According to the Ministry, the caller took a picture of the bear and cubs, but the sow hurried the cubs off, as a bear should do when seeing a human. Conservation officers attended, but were unable to locate the bears. No more action is expected to be taken unless the bears return and become disruptive. The Ministry of Environment reminds people that Saskatchewan has a healthy bear popula-
tion and it is not uncommon to see bears in the wild at this time of year, especially young ones on the move as they are establishing new territory. They are attracted to new smells and looking for food. Their range includes all northern Saskatchewan forests, extending southward into the aspen parkland, plus some more isolated ranges such as the Cypress Hills, Touchwood Hills, and the Qu’Appelle Valley. Most bears are cautious around humans and it is rare that they charge or chase a human in normal circumstances, but they are unpredictable and it is important to be mindful of bears when you are in bear country. Ensure you take the appropriate precautions when enjoying provincial parks, campgrounds and natural areas. Anyone who finds themselves in a potentially dangerous situation with a bear should contact their local conservation officer or call the TIPP line at-1800-667-7561 or from your cell at #5555. HOLLYWOOD — The “Me Too” movement has finally caught up with Woody Allen. The first clue came when Woody started shopping his memoir around to publishers and found that no one would touch it. His latest film, “A Rainy Day in New York,” starring Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schreiber has been dropped by Amazon, which was to distribute it in the U.S. and internationally. Apparently, American theaters weren’t keen to show a Woody Allen film. “A Rainy Day in New York” will now open Oct.
Ruby Rose 3 in Italy, hoping for great reviews in Europe to help convince greedy theater owners to change their minds. Allegedly, Greta Gerwig, Colin Firth, Ellen Page, Michael Caine and Timothee Chalamet are at the top of a list of actors who say they’ll never work with Woody again. But Kevin Spacey is very available. Olivia Colman, this year’s best-actress
Oscar winner (for “The Favourite”), and Anthony Hopkins, best-actor Oscar winner for “Silence of the Lambs,” are shooting “The Father,” in which Colman plays the daughter of Hopkins, who refuses any assistance from her despite the fact that he’s slowly going mad. “Batwoman” will be coming to the CW with Ruby Rose in the title role as the first gay live-action superhero. Rose starred in “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” (2016), “John Wick: Chapter 2” (2017) and “The Meg” (2018). In more CW news, Kennedy McMann of “Gone” (2017) is “Nancy Drew,” with Scott Wolf as her father, and Lucy Hale is joining the new “Riverdale” spinoff series “Katy Keene.” Brad Pitt’s latest, the
sci-fi film “Ad Astra,” with Ruth Negga, Jamie Kennedy, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones, was due in theaters May 24, but was pulled by Disney after its 20th Century Fox buyout. Now that Disney has devoured the movie world, it has become the most powerful film studio since the MGM Studios years! Disney has always had the family film market,
but now that it’s acquired The Marvel Universe (with the No. 1 box-office hit of all time, “Avengers: Endgame,” which surpassed first “Titanic” and then “Avatar”), all the “Star Wars” films formerly owned by 20th Century Fox, and the “Avatar” franchise, they’ve got it all. Disney has set up a new release pattern for the “Avatar” films. “Avatar 2” was to have opened Dec.
18, 2020, but will now premiere Dec. 17, 2021, followed by “Avatar 3” (Dec. 22, 2023), “Avatar 4” (Dec. 19, 2025) and “Avatar 5” (Dec. 17, 2027). “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” opens in December and will be followed by two more “Star Wars” films in December of 2024 and 2026. How nice of Disney give us all those dates to look forward to. We should all live so long ... LOL!

How to keep back pain at bay Back pain is a part of life for many people. The American Chiropractic Association says 31 million Americans experience low back pain at any given time, and experts estimate that up to 80 percent of the population will experience back pain at some point in their lives.
to eliminate back pain, but it can make it less frequent, advises doctors at Harvard Medical School. Low back pain due to muscle strain or muscle spasm can be tamed by exercise. Yoga, or a similar stretchbased exercise, can be very effective at alleviating back pain. Yoga relaxes muscle tension and expands range of motion in the joints. It also can build muscle strength. • Maintain proper posture. Slouching over computers or looking down at phones while texting may be doing damage to the back. Work ergonomically and take breaks to
pain. The causes can be considerable, from injury to underlying medical conditions. Alleviating back pain — or preventing it in the first place — involves understanding the common causes and taking appropriate actions. • Try exercise. Routine exercise is not guaranteed
WebMD says back pain is the second most common reason people visit the doctor. Back pain can take on various forms, ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain. Some may experience intermittent back pain, while others may have chronic back
stretch. Sit up straight in chairs and try to keep a straight back while walking as well. • Shed some pounds. Extra pounds at the midsection can shift the center of gravity and put strain on the lower back, advises WebMD. Try to stay within a range of 5-10 pounds of your ideal weight. • Don’t smoke. The Arthritis Foundation says research shows a high prevalence of spinal stenosis and back pain among smokers. It is believed that smoking can damage blood vessels that supply blood to the back. Smoking is also bad for the bones and

is a risk factor for osteoporosis. • Try a different sleeping position. Talk with a doctor about the best position for sleeping to ease up back pain. It may include being on your side with knees pulled up, or placing a pillow under your knees if you’re a back-sleeper. • Lift cautiously. Always bend at the knees and use the legs to lift items. This can help you avoid straining your back. Back pain can be overwhelming, but with some strategies a person can reduce his or her propensity for pain.

Father’s Day celebrated a bit early Father’s Day is coming up, and to celebrate, the Western Development Museum held their ‘Daddy and I, Coffee and Pie’ event Sunday. The kids and their dads came by to have some refreshments, and, of course, pie. “It’s just an opportunity for daddies, stepdads, granddads to come, you know, with some kids or their families to enjoy the museum, explore — and some crafts,” said Solange Massicotte, Education and Public Events Coordinator for the Western Development Museum.
“We have an ‘I Spy’ game where we have objects [with] close up pictures of [these particular] objects and they have to go and find in the museum where it is. We also have a scavenger hunt which is something we commonly do. It’s kind of just a nice, fun afternoon where you can kind of celebrate Father’s Day a week in advance, because sometimes people have things on the actual Father’s Day. It’s something we do every year at the Museum.”

To say that shore fishing has been slow this spring, at least for yours truly, would be a huge understatement. My suspicion is that the issue is as much a low water one, as the fish suddenly being smarter than usual, but when it comes to pure finicky fish can lead the animal kingdom in terms of one day being voracious attackers of any lure tossed in the water, and the next day having no interest if you threw out a seven course meal from the best restaurant in Paris. But as a fisherman, you tend to learn to be tenacious, or you’ve probably long ago abandoned the pursuit in favour of coffee and cribbage with the better half – not that there is anything inherently wrong with that option as I personally

So, in spite of being shut out on the first three excursions of the year, last Saturday I gave my son an option, disc golf in Kamsack, a course he has not yet experienced, or head to the new Togo bridge for some evening jigging for fish. Since this is a column on fishing you can probably guess he picked fishing. Like most spots we’ve visited this spring, the water was low, late fall low at the bridge.

But there were others on-site fishing, and signs of shore fires in the sand, sand usually under several feet of water in June, so others at least figured there was a chance of catching. It was a chilly evening, only 11 degrees as we drove home around 9 p.m., so it was a case of bundling up, putting minnows on a pickerel jig, tossing it into the depth, and hoping. The great thing about fishing though is that its charm as an activity tran-

scends catching fish. I am a fortunate father, maybe recognizing that more this week since Sunday is Father’s Day that both my kids – now grown – are in the same city as me, and we have things in common. That is particularly true with regards to my son, probably because fathers tend to imprint their interests on the next generation. We both enjoy fishing, but when fish are not biting we can discuss/argue sports, the Roughriders, Blue Jays, and of course last Saturday the Toronto Raptors were front and centre to our sports talk. We are both also avid board gamers, so discussing miniature skirmish games and the discovery of the excellent fishing board game Coldwater
Crown kept us from growing too bored. And then a pike did me a favour, took a minnow, and gave me my first landed fish on 2019. It was a good size, not one that will be long remembered for its size though, still a first in four trios it was appreciated, so I repaid the pike with the kindness of releasing it. The evening wore on and well beyond the distance we could toss a jig, a few carp began to roll. In the world of fishing in Saskatchewan few fish offer more in the world of fight than a carp, so I quite like catching them, but this year carp hold a new interest. Pizza Farm teaches about farming By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The annual ‘Pizza Farm’ spring tours for students took place this week, with hundreds of youth involved. The Pizza Farm, an idea launched in Yorkton seven years ago, and now copied at several places in the province, attracted 360 students from nine different schools, and two school divisions, said Rachel Kraynick, an Ag
Program Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food in Yorkton, and an event organizer. The Grade 3 students visited the Pizza Farm located at the Bayer Research Farm east of the city, where they were walked through eight different stations, all designed to provide some insight into agriculture, said Kraynick. The stations included one pertaining to genetically modified crops,
explaining what GM means, and what its benefits to agriculture are, said Kraynick. Another station focused on farm safety, while a third, with the help of Mosaic taught about fertilizer. Another station looked at water, in particular the importance of riparian areas, said Kraynick. The display included a chance to do some ‘critter dipping’, taking a water sample from a natural water body to see what actually lives in the water. Pattison Agriculture had an air seeder on-site for the students to get to know a bit more about modern farm equipment. The staff of FCC in the city had a vegetable planting station where students helped put tomatoes, peppers and onions, all pizza ingredients into the garden area. Grain Millers provided information of field crops including oats, corn and peas, said Kraynick, while another station dealt with wheat and canola as well as the use of crop protection products. Kraynick said the Grade 3 students will return to the site in the fall to see what has grown, and learn at harvest, adding by then they will be in Grade 4. Kraynick also thanked Domino’s Pizza for provid-

Kraynick said the learning stations, and in fact the entire program would not be possible without a legion of volunteers. She said 40 people helped over the two days, and some added support was given by a group of students from Sacred Heart High School who helped with the younger students throughout the two days.

FISHING Continued from Page A10 warning anglers in the province about the arrival of Prussian carp. From their Facebook page; a few points to help clarify some common questions about this novel species: 1. It is invasive. This means more than just coming from elsewhere - this species has a negative effect on native ecosystems, including displacing other fish. 2. It is edible. It is bony like other carp but it can certainly be eaten. 3. It is distinct in appearance and ecology from other species in SK, or common food species in the grocery store. 4. It is not a goldfish. They are closely related and may even hybridize, but are different species. It is certainly a new fish anglers should be aware of.
Last Saturday we did not catch a carp, Prussian, or otherwise. As the eve wore on my son did need to make a pit stop, so leaned his rod over the back of his lawn chair and headed up the beach. I was about to jokingly tell him that he’d catch a fish while away from his rod, when I noted the tip of his rod twitch slightly. I thought it was maybe a current, and then the rod bent hard, and I’m yelling at Adam to get back. He runs, grabs the rod and lands a nice walleye, too large to keep of course, but a really nice first fish of the season for him. There would be one more walleye for Adam, smaller, that allowed a good look before spitting the hook 10-feet from being landed.
It was a night of only 2.5 fish, but there was a visiting killdeer, (my limited birding knowledge pegged it as a killdeer at least), that scooted down the beach. There was deer feeding on a far shore. A flight of pelicans over the water, turkey vultures (I think), high over the trees, and a rather large muskrat, or small beaver on the beach a bit too far away to discern in confidence. It is these things more than how many, or how large the fish are, which make fishing jaunts worth the effort. We can get very tied up in our careers, chained to our electronic devices, too familiar with the sounds of cars, and trains and televisions. Fishing reconnects us with nature whether we catch, or not.
Did you know? According to March of Dimes, parents of newborns should resist the temptation to have their children sleep in their beds with them. Known as “co-sleeping,” this practice can put a baby at risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS. In fact, March of Dimes notes that bed-sharing is the most common cause of death in babies younger than three months. Parents
concerned about their children sleeping in another room overnight can still have children with them in their bedrooms, though the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep in a bassinet or crib rather than share a bed with their parents. To further reduce a child’s risk of SIDS, parents should place their babies to sleep on their
backs on flat, firm surfaces, such as a crib mattress covered with a tightly fitted sheet. Only use the mattress designed exclusively for the crib in which the child will be sleeping, as this should ensure that there are no spaces between the mattress and the crib frame. If such spaces exist, babies can easily roll into them but won’t be strong enough to pull themselves out.

June is Dairy Month! Since 1939, the National Dairy Council has encouraged families to make milk their beverage of choice. Originally, it was a way to distribute extra milk during the warm months of summer by grocer organizations. Dairy’s rich history continues with people, communities, companies from across the country observing Dairy Month in a variety of ways. In many areas, dairy farm families open their gates to visitors for tours, while local fairs and festivals offer taste testing and events featuring tasty dairy products. Dairy farming is a family tradition, one that has been a way of life for many generations. Ninetyeight percent of dairy farms are family owned and operated. These hardworking men and women provide Americans with fresh dairy products yearround. Whether it’s in coffee, cereal, smoothies or dairybased dressings, adding one more serving of milk to your family’s day can help ensure they get the nutrients they need to build strong bones and teeth. Dairy provides three of the four nutrients that are typically lacking in American diets: calcium, potassium and vitamin D. Dairy’s unique combination of nutrients plays key roles in preventing heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis. Dairy also is important for building strong bones and teeth. Low-fat, fat-free milk or lactose-free dairy products are the best choice for the fat and calorie conscious, or those who are lactose intolerant. An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has 150 calories and 8 grams of fat (4.5 grams saturated fat). If you choose an 8-ounce glass of fat-free milk, you consume 85 calories and less than 1 gram of fat. This dairy-licious recipe for Tres Leches Cake is popular in Mexico and has been updated with a few time-saving twists. It’s typically soaked with three kinds of milk — sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream. This recipe uses frosting as the third milk, in the form of whipped cream. It’s a delicious way to celebrate National Dairy Month. TRES LECHES CAKE If you’re pressed for time, just use a good quality packaged butter cake mix and follow the directions for baking, soaking and frosting the cake below. •3/4 cup sugar •1/4 cup butter, softened •2 teaspoons vanilla extract •2 large eggs •1 cup all-purpose flour •1/2 teaspoon baking powder •1/2 teaspoon baking soda •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/2 cup milk
Frosting: •2 cups heavy whipping cream •1/4 cup powdered sugar •1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Milk Mixture: •1 cup half & half •1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk •1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Berries (Optional): •1 cup fresh raspberries or strawberries, leaves removed •1 cup fresh blueber-
ries or blackberries •3/4 cup sweetened shredded coconut, toasted, optional Heat oven to 325 F. Grease and flour 8-inch round cake pan; set aside. Combine sugar, butter and vanilla in bowl; beat at medium speed until combined. Add eggs, one at a time, continue beating until fluffy. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in bowl; mix well. Add flour mixture to butter mixture; beat at low speed until well-mixed. Add 1/2 cup milk; continue beating until well mixed. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 30 minutes and turn the cake halfway around. Continue to bake another 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Place cake in refrigerator to cool completely. The cake also can be made a
day ahead, if desired. (A chilled or cold cake is much sturdier than a cake at room temperature, and easier to cut.) Meanwhile, make the frosting by combining whipping cream, powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in bowl; beat at high speed until stiff peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to use. To make the soaking liquid, combine half & half, sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in bowl; mix well. To slice the cake in half horizontally, you’ll need a small paring knife and a large serrated or bread knife. Use the paring knife to score the entire outside edge of the cake halfway up the side. Go slowly, get down at eye-level if necessary to keep it even, and don’t cut too deeply. Take the serrated knife and cut

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can dogs really understand what we’re saying? Well, my little rat terrier, “Adam,” understands many words, such as “hot” when he gets too close to my coffee. He backs away quickly. He also picks up many words from our conversations, such as “cook”
Better-Than-Candy Pie The name for this outrageous dessert came right from the men who tried it. Each one took a big bite, then smiled and said, “This is better than candy.” That’s saying a lot! •1 cup diced banana •1 (6-ounce) purchased chocolate-flavored pie crust •1/4 cup chopped dry roasted peanuts •1 (4-serving) package sugar-free instant butterscotch pudding mix •2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder •1-1/4 cups water •2 tablespoons reducedfat peanut butter •3/4 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping •2 (2-1/2-inch) chocolate graham crackers, made into fine crumbs Layer bananas in pie crust. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons peanuts evenly over bananas. In a large
auditory processing activates. The researchers said it’s likely because the dogs were trying hard to understand what their humans were saying to them.
And a research study
published last year seems to back that up. An evaluation of 12 dogs of different breeds found that they could tell the difference between words they had previously heard and words that they hadn’t. The words they “knew” were the ones used when training them to distinguish between two objects. What was interesting is that when the dogs heard unfamiliar words or even “gibberish,” their neural centers for auditory processing were more active than when they heard familiar words. This is the opposite of the way our

or “hungry.” I always tell him a person’s name when they meet him for the first time. Once, the woman he met was named Laura, so that’s what I told him. He looked at her, then at me, then back to her. He knows that my daughter’s name is Laura, and this wasn’t “his” Laura! — Anita T., Chicopee, Massachusetts DEAR ANITA: You’ve got one smart dog there! Some dogs do seem to understand new words, names or associations faster or better than other dogs.
It’s really cool that Adam can associate a familiar person with her name, Laura, and it seems clear that he noticed a difference. Now, will he identify “new Laura” and “old Laura” in the future? That’s definitely something to watch for. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Timesaving tip Working parents frequently say they feel stressed, tired, rushed, and short on quality time with their children, friends, partners, or hobbies, according to a 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center. Mornings are a time of day when things can get especially hectic, as each person is trying to get out the door on time. Doing things the night before can take some pressure off of morning routines, and setting up breakfast in advance can be one of these prearranged tasks. While many people use slow cookers for readyto-eat dinners when they get home at night, these devices also can be put to use in the morning. Purchase a slow cooker with a timer and set it to go on sometime in the early morning hours. Fill the cooker with oatmeal, eggs, farina, or any makeahead breakfast recipe so breakfast will be cooked and hot when everyone wakes up. The aroma of a homemade breakfast may even entice people out of bed. Homemade food can be doled out quickly, and it’s also likely to be more filling than breakfast bars or quick snacks nabbed before going out the door.

Improve life expectancy with healthy habits “Who Wants to Live Forever” is a song that appeared on the 1986 album “A Kind of Magic” by the rock band Queen. The song often sparks conversation about the potential benefits of immortality. Immortality may not be possible, but many people aspire to improve their chances to live a long and
prosperous life. A study published in the journal Lancet analyzed data from the 2016 Global Burden of Diseases project to generate life expectancy predictions from 2017 to 2040 for most countries. The United States saw the largest decline in ranking among high-income countries, as life expectancies in the United States
are projected to fall from 43rd in 2016 to 64th by 2040, with an average life expectancy of 79.8. Life expectancy in the U.S. has dropped in each of the past two years, according to annual reports by the National Center for Health Statistics. But there may be hope for Americans yet. Doctors and scientists continu-
Facts about osteoporosis Osteoporosis is often seen as a problem for the elderly, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation notes that being over 50 is a major risk factor for osteoporosis. But that doesn’t mean people younger than 50 can’t develop the disease. The misconception that osteoporosis exclusively afflicts aging men and women only highlights the need to learn more about the disease. What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. Because people cannot feel their bones weakening, osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease,” notes the NOF. Despite its silence, osteoporosis is a serious threat, increasing a person’s risk for bone breaks from falls.
a sedentary lifestyle; smoking; and excessive consumption of alcohol. Insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake is another controllable risk factor for osteoporosis. Speak with a physician about osteoporosis and the role
that diet and exercise can play in prevention. Osteoporosis affects people across the globe. Taking steps to reduce your risk for osteoporosis can prevent broken bones and other negative side effects of this disease.

What are the risk factors for osteoporosis? The NOF categorizes risk factors for osteoporosis as uncontrollable and controllable. Uncontrollable risk factors include age, family history, low body weight (being small and thin), and a history of broken bones. Gender also is an uncontrollable risk factor, as women are more likely than men to suffer from osteoporosis. In fact, the NOF notes that a woman’s risk of breaking a hip due to osteoporosis is equal to her risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. Controllable risk factors for osteoporosis include not eating enough fruits and vegetables; consuming too much protein, sodium and caffeine;
to the National Center for Health Statistics. Usage of prescription opioids and heroin has skyrocketed in recent years. Drug use also may exacerbate mental illnesses, potentially making drug users more vulnerable to suicide. • Maintain healthy body mass. Moderate to vigorous exercise regimens and diets loaded with healthy foods can keep weight in check. Maintaining a healthy weight has a host of positive side effects, including reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a leading killer in North America. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly four in 10 adults and 18.5 percent of children
in the United States are obese. According to the 2015 Canadian Health Measures Survey, 30 percent of adults in Canada are obese and may require medical support to manage their disease. • Limit alcohol consumption. Some evidence suggests that light drinking can be good for cardiovascular health. However, a paper published in the Lancet suggests every glass of wine or pint of beer over the daily recommended limit will cut half an hour from the expected lifespan of a 40-year-old. The paper says the risks are comparable to smoking. Simple, healthy lifestyle changes can help people increase their life expectancies.

What happens to bones when a person has osteoporosis? The NOF notes that, under a microscope, healthy bones look like a honeycomb. When a person has osteoporosis, the holes and spaces in the honeycomb are considerably larger than in healthy bones. Osteoporotic bones are not as dense as healthy bones, and as they become less dense, they weaken and are more susceptible to breaks. Is osteoporosis common? Osteoporosis is common across the globe. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, one in three women over age 50 and one in five men over age 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures.
ally study the lifestyles of people who outlive their life expectancies. While genetics can play a role, so can following healthy habits, which have been identified to promote longevity. • Don’t smoke. Many smokers have been told that smoking trims 10 years off their life expectancies, and that statement is corroborated by a study published in 2013 in The New England Journal of Medicine that tracked participants over a span of several years. The good news is people who quit before the age of 35 can usually regain those lost years. • Avoid drug use. Accidental drug overdoses contributed to 63,600 deaths in the United States in 2016, according

Campfire cooking Camping season revs up when the temperature warms. In a recent survey by Kampgrounds of America, Inc., the main reasons people say they go camping are to reconnect with nature, spend time with family and friends and reduce stress and relax. Campfire cooking — which involves cooking over an open fire and eating outdoors — makes camping that much more enjoyable for many people. Campfire cooking is about simplicity of ingredients and ease of cooking. Chances are campers do not want to lug too many cooking instruments to the campsite, so ingredients that are portable and can cook quickly over an open fire are attractive. Cast iron skillets, grills and Dutch ovens often are the gear of choice. Here are some delicious campfire
meals to try on your next camping trip. Campfire Casserole Mix your favorite ground meat (beef, chicken or pork) with kidney beans and cubed bacon (leftover from breakfast works well). Add barbecue sauce or diced tomatoes, depending on your preference. Allow to simmer in a Dutch oven on low for 45 minutes to an hour. Season to taste. During the last 10 minutes of cooking, place refrigerated biscuits over the top of the casserole, cover and cook until the biscuits are done. Seafood No-Boil Cut foil sheets about 12 inches long. Add 5 to 6 shrimp, one quarter of an ear of corn, a few slices of smoked andouille sausage, a lemon slice, and seasonings to taste. Fold the foil packets carefully to seal in the ingredients. Place the packets on a grill over the campfire and allow to
cook for around 10 to 15 minutes. Skillet Pizza Place a little cornmeal and oil on the bottom of a cast iron skillet. Spread refrigerated pizza dough out on the skillet. Cover with pizza sauce, cheese and favorite toppings and cook over the fire until the cheese boils and the crust browns. Campsite Cobbler Line a Dutch oven with aluminum foil. Mix together a yellow cake mix, 1-1⁄4 cups water and 1⁄2 cup canola oil and pour over two cans of a favorite pie filling flavor in the pot. Prepare the campfire for low heat. Put the Dutch oven in the ashes and cover with remaining ash or charcoal briquettes. Cook until bubbly, around 30 to 40 minutes. Campfire cooking is delicious, and few things can beat eating tasty foods under an open sky.

Many different foods call to mind campfire cooking. Foods cooked over an open fire take on a unique, smokey and savory flavor that is hard to replicate. There’s something special about collectively preparing, cooking and sharing a meal in the great outdoors that makes camping so appealing. Although s’mores may be the first treat that comes to mind when considering classic campfire foods, everything from casseroles to soups to cobblers can suffice. Even vegetables and seafood can be cooked over a campfire with the
right preparation. Corn on the cob is a tasty side dish that is tailor-made for campsite cooking. The sweet flavor of corn complements just about any meal, and those kernels take on a robust flavor when touched with a little char. Enjoy this recipe for “Campfire Corn on the Cob,” courtesy of Kampgrounds of America (KOA). Campfire Corn on the Cob Serves 4 •4 corn on the cob (do not husk) •Water •1⁄2 to 1 cup sugar
(optional) •Butter to taste •Salt to taste (optional) Mix the water and sugar in a clean bucket, cooler or large pan (add enough water to cover corn). Add the corn to the water mixture and soak for 1 to 2 hours. Remove the corn from the water and place over the campfire or on the grill, turning often to avoid over-burning the husk. Cook for approximately 20 to 30 minutes or until tender; remove corn from the fire. Peel back the husk and silk, spread with butter and/or salt. Enjoy steaming hot.

When the weekend rolls around, we’re a brunch bunch in our family. Just say the word, and it translates to “relaxing.” Brunch isn’t too early, so we have time to read the paper and do a run, and not too late so the day is taken away. Best of all, it’s an occasion for good food and connecting with friends and family. For a main dish, here’s
a slow cooker brunch egg casserole you can serve without having to think too much about the details, and you won’t be heating up your oven on a hot day. Assemble the ingredients early in the morning (or the night before and refrigerate), turn the slow cooker switch to high for about three hours, and it’s ready to serve as is, or with your favorite toppings. Like classic baked egg dishes, this recipe uses the basics — eggs, milk and cheese. But instead of adding bread cubes, this combo is layered with shredded hash brown potatoes.

pepper and dry mustard. Set aside. Distribute one-half of the hash browns evenly over the bottom of slow cooker. Layer with half of the ham or bacon, red pepper, onions and one cup of the cheese. Repeat layers, ending with two cups cheese on top. Pour egg mixture evenly over the layered casserole. (Assemble the night before, if you prefer, and refrigerate.) Cook on high for three hours or until eggs are set and thoroughly cooked, and edges begin to brown. Sprinkle thyme or rose-

Fresh veggies add spark to salad dishes Salads are a dietary staple across the globe. Salads are traditionally served chilled or at room temperature, and many are enhanced by oil, vinegar or another dressing. Many people are quick to think of certain varieties of lettuce as the prime base for salads. However, just about any fruit or vegetable can serve as a foundation for a tasty salad. Zucchini and tomato
provide excellent nutrition and can be hydrating, which can come in handy once the weather starts to warm. These versatile ingredients can be combined to form a robust salad to accompany any meal or one that can be enjoyed on its own. Such is the case with this recipe for “Raw Zucchini Salad from “The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook (Rockridge
Press) by the editors of the Rockridge Press. Refreshing and filling, this salad may quickly become a staple of your diet. Get back on track with low-fat dining Many people resolve to get in shape and lose weight. Diet and exercise have long been the ideal recipe for shedding pounds. In order to do so, a person must create a calorie deficit, which occurs when a person burns more calories than he or she consumes. Healthy, low-fat and low-calorie foods can help people create a calorie deficit.

Side effects of snoring - risk of Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore
as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may
also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstruc-
Safe cooking temperatures (NC) — While most of us wash our hands before meal prep and disinfect kitchen surfaces to avoid cross-contamination, we might forget to check the internal cooking temperatures of our meat, fish or poultry. Sure, we might use a food thermometer when roasting a turkey, but many of us don’t know that we also have to use it to check burgers, chicken breasts and pork chops. With barbecue season right around the corner, it’s a smart idea to get a refresher on the safe internal cooking
• “When you have a delicate lampshade, or one that has a textured fabric, it can be hard to get the dust off. One method that I’ve used is a lint roller. This works well for flat but textured, when a dusting rag would make it stick worse. If you have pleats, sometimes the best way is to remove it and take it outside, then use canned, compressed air to blow the dust off.” — Y.L. in Arizona • To de-fat a broth, simply put it in the freezer. As the broth cools, the separated fat condenses at the top. You can peel it right off or scoop it away with a spoon. • Coffeepot got a layer of grime? For a little extra scrub power, use a tablespoon of baking soda mixed with a few drops of dish soap. It’s a minor abrasive, and it deodorizes, too. Rinse clean and repeat if necessary. • “Here’s a great summer activity: Save toilet paper rolls and paper towel cores, plus any small boxes. Add small hook and loop squares on the corners and sides. Then, kids can use them as freeform building blocks. It’s fun to see what kinds of things they create. Save larger boxes to create a backyard castle using duct tape or packing tape to join boxes.” — V.E. in Pennsylvania • “I dropped an earring down the disposal in the kitchen. It was hard to see and even harder to get at. I was at the point of despair. My lovely husband tied a string around a magnet and was able to pull it out.” — W.E. in South Carolina • Deskinning chicken pieces is easier if you use a paper towel to grab onto the skin. temperatures of popular meats. Start by using a digital thermometer, which offers the best speed and accuracy. Insert it through the thickest part of the meat, all the way to the middle, not touching any bone. Check each piece separately. Here are the safe cooking temperatures you need to know for meat, poultry and fish: Poultry. Chicken, turkey and duck can cause food poisoning if they’re not properly stored, prepared and cooked, so always cook your poultry to a safe internal temperature to kill bacteria like Salmonella or Campylobacter bacteria. For ground poultry and pieces, that’s 74°C (165°F); for whole poultry, that’s 82°C (180°F). Beef, veal and lamb. Raw ground meat can be especially dangerous as it can be contaminated with
bacteria like E. coli. For medium rare, cook to 63°C (145°F); for medium, 71°C (160°F); and well done, 77°C (170°F). Ground meat should be cooked to 71°C (160°F). For burgers, insert food thermometer through the side of the patty. Seafood. The main safety concern is associated with shellfish that are filter feeders (such as oysters, clams, scallops, mussels and cockles), as they can carry bacteria, viruses and toxins that can cause food-related illness. You’ll want to cook fish to an internal temperature of 70°C (158°F). When it comes to shellfish, cook to 74°C (165°F) and discard any that do not open when cooked. Pork. Whether you’re cooking ham, pork loin or ribs, pieces or ground pork, they all need to be cooked to 71°C (160°F). Find more information at canada.ca/foodsafety.
tive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than
people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often pre-
cedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.
