Aron Hershmiller will long remember Jan. 13, as that was the day he pulled his first fish ever caught through the ice at Good Spirit Lake. And it was a memorable fish indeed. The Northern Pike measured 39.5 inches weighing in at about 14.5 pounds. The proud fisherman is seen here with his fishing helpers Peyton, 8, and with glasses Rylee, 6.

“What They Had” (NR) — “What They Had” captures the sweet heartbreak of loving someone who is slipping away, and the impossible decisions that we must make in the twilight years of our lives. Bridget (Hillary Swank) is called home to Chicago when her mother (Blythe Danner) takes off down a snow-covered lane. Her father (Robert Forster) is in denial about his wife’s Alzheimer’s disease, and her brother (Michael Shannon) plays caregiver
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 47-year-old female in good overall health. About six months ago, I began to take several supplements, one of which was vitamin E (200 IU). I had no noticeable adverse reactions to any of the supplements. About 10 days ago, I started taking 400 IU of vitamin E. Right about the same time as this increase, I began having painful stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea and tiredness. After a week of this, someone suggested that the vitamin E
to Mom and Dad, yearning for more out of life. Meanwhile, Bridget can’t help but compare the unshakeable love of her parents to her own cold marriage. It’s moving and never strays into sappy. “Mid90s” (R) — Jonah Hill makes his directorial debut with this homage to the Los Angeles skate rat
scene in 1996. It’s accurate and evocative, rich with a certain offhand nostalgia — youth is youth and struggle is struggle, no matter your background or pursuits. Here, we follow Stevie (Sunny Suljic), who is 13 (as was Hill in 1996), but who looks much younger. He’s left much to his own devices by his
hardworking single mom (Katherine Waterston) and older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges), so he befriends a group of slightly older, cooler — whatever that means — street skaters at a local skate shop. Their adventures are dramatic and mundane, recalling the crass antics of early teenhood and the bonds created under its mesmerizing spell. “Monsters and Men” (R) — Writer/director Reinaldo Marcus Green offers a study in consequences, where no action is exempt. A tense situation on a street corner of Brooklyn ends with one black man dead at the hands of white police officers, and another man who filmed the event facing the
might be the cause. I have stopped taking it and have even avoided foods high in vitamin E. Three days later, I’m still having the diarrhea and other symptoms. If the vitamin E was the cause of the symptoms, shouldn’t they have gone away by now? — K.B. ANSWER: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, so it is possible for levels to build up in the body if it’s taken in high doses for long periods of time. However, toxic effects are unlikely at less than 1,500 IU daily, which is far higher than what you have been taking. Bleeding is one risk at high doses, as is a theoretical deficiency of vitamin A and D. I think it is far more likely that you happened to get a case of gastroenteritis — inflammation of the stomach/intestines, often caused by a virus. It’s
unlikely to be due to the vitamin E. However, since vitamin E supplementation hasn’t been shown to improve any of the many conditions it has been studied for, I don’t recommend that you continue to take it. Go easy on eating for a few days after gastroenteritis: The time-tested BRAT diet (bananas, white rice, peeled apples and dry toast) is effective. You can get enough fluid through water or apple juice, along with some salt, like chicken or vegetable broth. DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told that due to the way our food is processed and grown, most people lack magnesium and should take a magnesium supplement. Should I? I read that one symptom of low magnesium can be constipation or irregular-
ity. — C.B. ANSWER: The prevalence of low magnesium depends on the population. About 2 percent of the general population has low magnesium levels, but among people with diabetes, the rate is about 25 percent. In people who abuse alcohol, the prevalence may be as high as 30 to 80 percent. Some diuretics used for high blood pressure predispose a person to magnesium deficiency. High magnesium foods include leafy green vegetables, nuts, cereals and avocados. The most common symptoms of severe low magnesium are loss of appetite and muscle tremors and weakness. Magnesium is necessary for potassium and calcium balance, so these can be deficient in cases of low magnesium. Since only a small amount

terrible choice between speaking out about the injustice and staying silent to protect his family. The impact of the decision is seen from the different perspectives — a black cop struggling with the actions of his colleagues, a young athlete who is called to action, and others. Well done and poignant performances by John David Washington, Anthony Ramos and Chante Adams. “Hell Fest” (R) — College cutie Natalie (Amy Forsyth) is home for a visit and, conveniently, a traveling horror-themed amusement park is in town. And it’s Halloween! So of course, Natalie and her friends, and their charming boyfriends, are going. Also conveniently,
a masked serial killer decides rightfully that this Hell Fest would be a great time to just openly start killing people — and Natalie’s group is at the top of the list. It’s a great and terrifying idea, especially since these types of amusements (sans live killers) exist. But it’s a terribly executed film, and you’d have to really love “scary” movies to find it enjoyable.
of body magnesium is in the blood, magnesium deficiency should be considered in people with unexplained low calcium and potassium. Low magnesium is rare in nondiabetic people who eat a good diet. I don’t recommend magnesium supplementation for low-risk people with no symptoms. Symptoms of low magnesium should be evaluated
by a physician and not selftreated. Only those with diagnosed low magnesium should take a magnesium supplement. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

Major investment in Preeceville wastewater system Investing in modern reliable wastewater services is essential to safeguarding the environment, building healthy sustainable communities and supporting future growth. Recently, Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding, and Preeceville Mayor Garth Harris, announced more than $5.1 million in joint funding to improve Preeceville’s wastewater treatment facil-
ity.
The project involves upgrading the community’s existing wastewater storage cells and increasing their capacity, along with improving the system’s overall treatment process. The force main pipe that delivers wastewater to the treatment facility will also be upgraded. Once complete, the project will improve the quality of wastewater entering the Assiniboine River, and support local development. “Modern efficient wastewater systems are crucial to safeguarding the health of Saskatchewan’s communities and provid-
ing a high quality of life for residents,” said Goodale. “Our government is proud to support these vital upgrades to Preeceville’s wastewater treatment facility, which will protect the environment and support community development.” “The Government of Saskatchewan’s investment of more than $1.7 million toward this important Town of Preeceville project will help position the community for growth, better safeguard the environment, and help keep our great province strong,” Kaeding said. “It’s impressive to see this project beginning to move from the drawing
board to reality.” “The Town of Preeceville, at the headwaters of the Assiniboine River, is very appreciative of the funding from the federal and provincial governments toward our project,” Harris said. “This project is part of our community plan centred around safety for its citizens and the environment. Preeceville is a thriving community that continues to grow and this upgrade and reuse of our existing wastewater system with our funding partners will ensure our residents get access to the best water works system possible.” Quick facts:
• The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are each contributing up to $1,731,327 to this project through the New Building Canada Fund, while the Town of Preeceville is providing $1,731,846. • Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities. • $26.9 billion of this funding is supporting green infrastructure pro-
jects, including $5 billion available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank. Coldest Night program combats homelessness By Devin Wilger Staff Writer There is a homelessness problem in Yorkton, but it’s not one you can easily see, and the people affected don’t make their troubles well known. Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth (YTHY) is raising money to help with the Coldest Night of the Year walk. The event takes place on Feb. 23, 2019 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, registration opening at 4:00 p.m. with the walk itself beginning at 5:00 p.m. After the walk they congre-
gate back at the starting point to warm up with a hot meal after. This will be the third year that YTHY has participated in the walk, and this is their lone fundraiser each year said Glenda Gascho, organizer of the event. “We believe that it captures what we do. We deal with a lot of homeless, atrisk youth.” The goal is to raise around $30,000, the highest goal set for the event in Yorkton. They are happy to accept individuals but also want to recruit teams take part, Gascho said.
The funds raised will go largely towards their outreach program. While their main program is the transitional home, which is funded by province, their outreach program covers a broader range of people. “We are providing outreach services to anyone who needs it. We are targeting, of course, youth, and under federal guidelines youth are up to age 29. We do have a rooming home that we’re operating on Circlebrooke, and we do offer room and board but they are responsible for all of their own food,” explained Gascho. Food is another struggle for YTHY. Gascho notes that in the transitional home they have a budget of $9, which doesn’t go far when they have a
house filled with teenagers, meaning they inevitably go over-budget. “Food costs are definitely high, and it is difficult to budget for 5-6 people in one house on $45 a day. I don’t think I could do it in my house!” Gascho said. While the primary goal of the event is to raise money, they also want people to realize that Yorkton has a homelessness problem that is often kept out of the public eye. “There is this opinion that Yorkton doesn’t have a homelessness problem, but we do... We’ve got couch surfers all over the place, just staying where they can until they’ve worn out their welcome or what have you. They’re struggling to get to that basic necessity,” said Gascho. While focused on youth,

Gascho notes that there is an increasing issue with area seniors. “They are really struggling to put food on their own tables. We help whoever is in need, so we have noticed an uptick in that as well. That is where our outreach money is targeted to go... A big piece of that is understanding that they’re out there.” Another issue in Yorkton is that there can be a lack of options for people who have a sudden need. “The one thing we don’t have in Yorkton is an emergency shelter for men or boys... That’s a
need that we know that we can’t fulfill, but we have come across people who have asked if they can stay in our rooming home just for the night, because they want to stay out of the cold. It is a definitive reality in our area and we certainly don’t want our community members to be under the impression that’s not the case. Homelessness and people struggling to put food on the table is a reality right here in Yorkton, whether you’re a youth or a senior citizen. People are struggling.” To learn more and sign up, visit http://www.cnoy. org or call the YTHY office at 306-783-2340.

Yogurt Dressing, and be well this winter!
Cold and flu season is upon us, but you can cook your way to better health and lessen your chances of getting the flu or a cold by eating certain healthy foods. One thing to remember is that smart diet choices can boost our immune system. The following list includes simple things that can help your immune system to work at peak performance: 1) Get plenty of liquids to help prevent viruses and bacteria from taking up residence in your body. According to Dr. Riva Rahl of the Cooper Clinic in Dallas: “The mucus in your nose is actually one of the key physical barriers that keep germs out of your body. When you’re not well hydrated, it dries up and doesn’t provide that barrier.” 2) Protein is a building block for a healthy immune system. Choose lean red meats, poultry and fish, dried beans and soy. You can also choose protein-rich plant sources with heart-healthy fat, like peanut butter and nuts. 3) Choose foods rich in vitamins C and E. These two antioxidant-rich vitamins protect cells —
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you’re getting kudos and other positive reactions to your suggestions, don’t let the cheers drown out some valid criticisms. Better to deal with them now than later. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Following your keen Bovine intuition pays off, as you not only reassess the suggestions some people are putting in front of you, but also their agendas for doing so. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You continue on a high-enthusiasm cycle as that new project you’ve assumed takes shape. You’re also buoyed by the anticipation of receiving some good news about a personal matter. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your eagerness to immerse yourself in your new assignment is understandable. But be careful that you don’t forget to take care of that pressing
including those of your immune system — from damage by toxins in the environment. Choose citrus fruits/juices, melons, mangoes, kiwi, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, berries, broccoli, cabbage, sweet/ white potatoes, winter squash, leafy greens, almonds, hazelnuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, whole grains and fortified cereals several times a day. 4) Eat probiotic foods to help build up the good bacteria in the intestines. These bacteria play a role in helping fend off illnesses. Any fermented food is rich in this type of good bacteria, so choose yogurt, sauerkraut, tofu, brinetreated pickles or aged cheese at least once a day. 5) Add a zinc-rich food to your daily diet to increase the production of white blood cells in your body. Research shows that this effect can reduce the number of days you’ll suffer from a cold. Some foods rich in zinc are yogurt, lean red meat, poultry and fish, almonds, pumpkin seeds and fortified cereals. Heat oven to 400 F. Place 1 tablespoon olive oil in a medium sauce pot and set over medium heat. Once oil is hot, add the quinoa and toast for 2-3 minutes, stirring regularly. Pour in the stock and stir in the garlic. Cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 18-20 minutes. Once the stock has absorbed and the rings around each seed have separated, remove from heat and keep covered to steam. Tear the kale into small 1-2 inch pieces. Place on a baking sheet and drizzle with the remaining oil. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, garlic powder, cayenne and 1/2 teaspoon sea salt. Toss the kale with your hands to coat well. CONQUER WINTER. • In this time of bitter partisan rivalries, it would be well to remember the following sage observation: “Do not trust to the cheering, for those persons would cheer just as much if you and I were going to be hanged.” The man who first made that observation was Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell, considered by some to be a hero of liberty, by others to be a regicidal dictator. He died in 1658, probably from septicemia. He was so reviled that, three years later, his body was exhumed so that he could be posthumously executed, his body thrown into a pit and his head displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall. • Those who study such things say that if all the gold in the world were combined in one lump, it would result in a cube that measures 20 yards on each side. • The acids in your digestive system are so corrosive that your stomach must produce an
entirely new lining every three days. • You might be surprised to learn that the mother of Sir Winston Churchill, that quintessential icon of Britishness, was actually born an American in Brooklyn, New York. Lady Randolph Spencer-Churchill, nee Jeanette Jerome, was a socialite, and it is through her that Winston Churchill is related to his wartime ally, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The prime minister and the president were seventh cousins, once removed. • If you’re planning to travel to Washington state with nefarious plans, here’s an interesting law to keep in mind: Any motorist with criminal intent is required to stop before entering a town and inform the chief of police of his or her presence. By Dana Jackson Q: I’m a big fan of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” reality programs. I’ve often wondered, with so many of these couples breaking up after getting engaged on the show, does the lead get to keep the engagement ring? — A.J. A: ABC executive Rob Mills recently cleared up speculation about the ring. On each season of “The Bachelorette,” the two remaining bachelors meet with jeweler Neil Lane in West Hollywood to choose one of his sparkling gems to present to his prospective bride. If she says yes to one of their proposals, she can keep the ring, but only if the couple makes it to a certain point. According to Mills, if the couple breaks up before the two-year mark, neither gets to keep the ring and it’s returned to Lane. Q: When is the fourth season of “Fargo” going to air? While I didn’t think the third season was as good as the other two, it’s still a far better show than most on TV these days. — B.B. A: The Emmy-winning dark comedy series is making its fans wait, but hopefully that means it will return better than ever. Each season has a different star-studded cast (Martin Freeman, Kirsten Dunst and Ewan McGregor have appeared) with its own separate story and time period, but all have taken place in what I believe is the show’s biggest attraction — the snow-covered flatlands of Minnesota and North Dakota. FX announced that the fourth season, set in the 1950s and starring Chris Rock, won’t begin filming until the fall of 2019, which means it won’t air on FX until 2020! This is likely because the show’s creator, Noah Hawley, is busy with other projects, including the feature film “Pale Blue Dot” starring Reese Witherspoon. Q: Is it true that the Sue
Chris Rock Heck character is going to star in a spinoff of “The Middle”? I loved that show and would like to see it live on with my favorite sibling of the Heck clan. — J.K. A: The girl who once said “I can’t go to school today ... my face is too oval” is all grown up now and headed to Chicago. The spinoff, “Sue Sue In
the City,” was all set to go until a regime change at ABC scrapped it. The pilot starred Eden Sher as Sue Heck, with Brock Ciarlelli reprising his role from “The Middle” as her bestie, along with Chris Diamantopoulos (“Silicone Valley”) and Finesse Mitchell (“Saturday Night Live”). Despite not getting picked up ABC, there’s a chance the spinoff could find a place to call home on another network or platform. TV Guide pointed out that “Black-ish” spinoff “Grown-ish,” with a premise similar to “Sue Sue In the City,” found its way to the Freeform channel. So perhaps that network might be interested. Sometimes, as I’m pulling candle stubs and melted wax from candlesticks and votive holders at the end of the holidays or a birthday party, I think about how another celebration has passed. Picking through the leftover wax, I remember the happy moments all over again. Those candle bits also can continue to offer pleasure as firestarters in your wood-burning fireplace. Here’s the stuff you need: — nature finds such as bark, twigs and small pinecones — 1 tin can, such as a large soup can with lid removed (pinch rim of the can with pliers to form a spout for easy pouring) — saucepan — candle stubs, extra paraffin if needed (available in the canning section of supermarkets and craft stores) — muffin tray — paper muffin liners — candle wicking (available at craft stores -- also use wicking remaining from melted candle Career Opportunities ROADEX SERVICES requires O/O 1 tons for our RV division to haul RV’s throughout North America (pay up to $1.94/loaded mile). wax) Here’s the fun: — Take a walk outside with your kids to pick up some of nature’s treasures, such as small pinecones, bark fallen on the ground and twigs. — When you get inside, an adult should fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and set the tin can in the center. Put candle stubs and a chunk of paraffin (if needed) in the can. As water gets hot, the wax will melt quickly. Stir occasionally, keeping a constant eye on it, since it is flammable. — Meanwhile, your kids may fill a muffin tray with paper liners. Using a potholder, an adult should lift the tin can out of the water, let contents cool down and then pour about half an inch of wax into each muffin cup. — Now consider your wicks. If you have a longer one from a melted candle, you might want to use that, or use fresh ones from the craft store. Place a 3- to 4-inch wick in the wax in each cup so that the wick hangs out on the side, then set a medium-size pinecone in each cup. — Pick through outdoor finds and design an arrangement, quickly placing a few twigs, leaves and bark into the rapidly hardening wax. Once the nature collage is complete, add a little more liquid wax, if you wish. Let harden. Store in a recycled net produce bag or arrange in an attractive basket or bowl near your fireplace. — To use, an adult should place one firestarter between kindling and logs in a wood burning fireplace and light the wick. It will quickly ignite the kindling. Safety Note: The firestarters are not intended for gas fireplaces. Never leave a fire unattended and keep out of the reach of children. “Murphy Brown” doing that already?
HOLLYWOOD — Steve Carell became a star because of the TV series “The Office” (20052013) and film hits like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005), “Evan Almighty” (2008) and “Crazy, Stupid, Love” (2011), among others, switching from comedy to drama at will. In 2018, he gave us the dramas “Beautiful Boy,” “Welcome to Marwen” and the biographical comedy/ drama “Vice,” in which he’s Donald Rumsfeld to Christian Bale’s Vice President Dick Chaney.

Die-hard “X-Men” fans can prepare for the 12th installment of the franchise, “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” which finished shooting in October 2017 to begin a year of postproduction. However, the November 2018 opening was pushed back to June 7, 2019, due to extensive reshooting that was required. Michael Fassbender kept busy shooting “Kung Fury II” (based on the video game), with Arnold Schwarzenegger and David Hasselhoff, for release this year, while James McAvoy shot the superhero thriller
“Glass,” with Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and Sarah Paulson, and “It: Chapter Two,” due Sept. 19. Jennifer Lawrence took some well-deserved time off, while Nicholas Hoult shot two films, the Australian Western “The True History of the Kelly Gang,” with Russell Crowe, and “The Banker,” with Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie. Another busy actor is Sylvester Stallone, who just rode the crest of “Creed II” to over $150 million at the box office and completed “Backtrace,” with Matthew Modine and Colin Egglesfield.
Stallone has finished filming “Rambo V: Last Blood” for release this year. For fun he produced the low-budget film “Street Justice,” written, directed and starring Chuck Zito, with Pamela Anderson, Frank Grillo, Michael Nouri (“Flashdance”) and a host of the best character actors you’ll see anywhere. Thad Luckinbill played J.T. Hellstrom on “The Young and The Restless” from 1999-2010 and returned in 2017. He has an identical twin, Trent (12 minutes younger), who is a lawyer and his producing partner. Thad married his “Y&R” co-star Amelia
Heinle in 2007; they had a son and a daughter together, but divorced in 2017. Thad and his brother have produced nine films, including “Sicario” (2015), which earned $85 million, and were executive producers of “La La Land” (2016), which turned a $30 million investment into $450 million, and “Sicario: Day of the Solado” (2018), with Benecio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, which earned $76 million. On April 13, 2018, the handsome Thad’s character on “Y&R” was terminated when he was hit on the back of the head with a fireplace poker. ... Thad went out with a thud!
