Western Lily windfarm now generating power The Western Lily windfarm near Grenfell has achieved commercial operations and is supplying energy to the SaskPower grid. The project consists of 10 Enercon turbines, which will supply up to 20 MW of electricity – enough to power 8,000 homes. “This is yet another example of our Government’s climate change mitigation efforts,” said
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? — K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by
SaskPower Minister Dustin Duncan. “SaskPower has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 levels by 40 per cent by 2030, and the Western Lily windfarm coming online represents a positive step in that direction.” Increasing Saskatchewan’s renewable power capacity is a key aspect of the province’s
placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening
climate change strategy, Prairie Resilience, which was released in December 2017. “Expanding wind power capacity is an important part of our effort to meet increasing demands for energy while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Howard Matthews, SaskPower Vice-President of Power Production.
collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine auto-injector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists. DEAR DR. ROACH: I saw a new physician for the first time two years ago. As he had no EKG machine, he sent me over to the local hospital for an EKG (just for his records, I wasn’t having problems). I had the EKG. The tech said that I was in atrial fib and needed to be admitover Sheila’s costly mistake. Wait to See: Victor makes Brady an offer he can’t refuse.
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Florence, a woman from Reese’s past, introduced herself to Taylor. Liam spent time with Steffy and their baby, Kelly, vowing to always be present for them. The history between Reese and Florence came to light when he asked her for a considerable favor. Taylor presented Steffy with an opportunity she’d always wanted. Will impressed Bill with his talent for turning a profit. When Wyatt and Sally visited Hope and Liam, Wyatt shared a memory from their past. Impressed by Bill’s role in Will’s life, Katie persuaded Thorne to allow his nemesis to stay for dinner. Wait to See: Thorne opens up to Katie about Darla. JJ questioned Haley about her connection to Melinda. Eric exploded when he learned that Xander was alive. Will turned to John for help with Leo. JJ urged Haley to open up about her secret. Ted tried to get Stefan to turn on Ben. Rex and Chloe got reacquainted. Eric attacked Xander. Kate encouraged Abigail to forgive Chad. Gabi and Stefan got into it over the future of “Gabi Chic.” Rafe and Hope argued about Ted. Eli and Lani hit a major snag as they built the case against Xander. Abe was furious
GENERAL HOSPITAL Jason made a promise. Ryan added another name to his list. Sam agreed to support Kristina. Nina received a veiled threat. Josslyn was grateful to Cameron. Alexis ran into Oscar. Monica worried about Drew. Finn was anxious. Julian questioned Willow’s motives. Carly felt guarded. Mike’s condition worsened. Laura made a big announcement. Mac asked Peter to keep an eye on Maxie. Curtis had a heart-to-heart with Stella. Sam was taken aback. Jason warned Drew about Shiloh. Alexis called a meeting with Laura, Monica and Scott. Anna was updated on her condition. Willow called a parent-teacher meeting with Lulu and Nina. Sonny visited Morgan’s grave. Lulu was disappointed with Peter’s decision. Lucy thwarted Valentin’s plan. Wait to See: Jason risks his life. “Our agreement with Gaia is a sign of things to come as we continue to purchase more renewable power from independent power producers.” The Power Purchase Agreement with Gaia Power, Inc., was signed Feb. 1, 2016 and construction began in June 2018. “We are excited and proud to see the Western Lily facility
come online and begin contributing to the provincial power grid,” Gaia President Samit Sharma said. “This is a project that is good for Saskatchewan, good for the communities of Grenfell, Wolseley and area, and good for the environment. We look forward to working with SaskPower for years to come.”
ted, as blood clots could form. I disagreed and went home. The doctor called me and persuaded me to go back to the hospital, which I did. I was preparing to be admitted when a cardiologist came in and said: “She doesn’t need admitting; she is not in atrial fib, it’s just PVCs.” I found out later that the EKG machine spit out the interpretation; no cardiologist had read it. I did complain, of course, and received an apology letter from the hospital. They also stated that they would change this procedure. Do hospitals actually rely on machines to do cardiology interpretations? And then go along with the machine’s interpreta-
tion without a cardiologist looking at the EKG? Please tell me it isn’t so. — M.K. ANSWER: It isn’t so, or at least it shouldn’t be. There are several errors here. The first is that the EKG machine made the wrong interpretation. The machines are pretty good most of the time, but there are times when it is very difficult to tell and the machine is wrong. The second error was that the technician told you rather than getting the results confirmed by a human being who could correctly interpret them. I give the technician credit for trying to act in the patient’s interest, but you should be sure of your facts before telling the patient.
It’s the third error — that of the doctor who called you — that upsets me the most, since the doctor was also wrong before calling you. I would be especially angry if the doctor had relied on the machine or the technician and hadn’t checked the EKG personally.
Phyllis spoke up at the memorial service about JT’s abusive nature. Victoria tried to prevent Reed from hearing the inflammatory remarks about his father, but he insisted he wanted to hear the whole truth. After the memorial, Nick drove
a shaken Nikki home, where she made a shocking discovery. Ana was overjoyed that Devon used her mix for Fen’s new single. Sharon and Rey got snowed in on the way home from working their case out of town. Jack and Kerry’s relationship
seemed to be progressing smoothly, although Jack still saw some red flags. Kerry assured Jack that he had nothing to worry about. Victoria kept some space between her and Billy. Wait to See: Rey and Arturo begin forming a brotherly bond.
It is good you wrote to complain: Hospitals rely on feedback to change the system. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

WGRF commits $2.4 million to projects Through a continuing co-funding partnership with the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) and other producer commodity groups, Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) is pleased to announce over $2.4 Million of new funding for 13 crop-related research projects. “Our organization is driven by the mission of producers directing investment in crop research to benefit western Canadian grain farmers,” says WGRF Board Chair, Terry Young. “ADF provides a great forum for producer groups to collaborate and co-fund agricultural research that improves agricultural systems, varietal development and agronomic practices. WGRF is committed to investing in agricultural research, and partnerships like this one with ADF leverages our research investments.” The approved projects include research into: improving weed and disease management, intercropping of pulses and oilseeds, improved management of aphids for pulse crops, improved agronomic quality and disease traits for oat varieties, and improved nitrogen management for canola and soybeans. A full listing of projects will be posted on the WGRF website once research contracts are in place. More than 420 past and present WGRF funded research projects are currently listed on westerngrains.com. “WGRF is currently funding 146 research projects in over 25 crops,” said Garth Patterson, WGRF Executive Director. “WGRF’s funding is directed at research into variety development and agronomy, emphasizing whole-farm sustainability, resiliency and efficiency of crop production systems.”

Drones: New regulations effective June 1 By Cory Carlick Staff Writer New regulations will come into effect June 1, 2019 for drone flyers. These regulations are more strict with harsher penalties than the current legislation.
All drones, for example, must now be registered. All pilots must have a valid drone pilot certificate, and may not operate the aircraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Pilots must also wait 12 hours between consumption of alcohol or drugs before engaging on any drone
flight crew. Violations will now fall more directly under the Criminal Code of Canada. Transport Minister Marc Garneau addressed the new changes to the regulations in a conference on Wednesday. “The government is resolved to improve the
security of aviation and of the public,” Garneau said. Drone operators must be at least 14 years of age, and in cases where the drone is not in the pilot’s direct line of sight, a special operations certificate is now required. Additionally, drone pilots are now prohibited
Western Canada Summer Games calls for volunteers In less than eight months (August 9-18), nearly 1,200 of Western Canada’s athletes and coaches will set their sights on Swift Current and surrounding communities as we host the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG). Thousands of visitors including officials, VIP’s, media and spectators will join us for the 10-day event. Featuring 16 sports and a major arts and cultural festival, the 2019 Games will be the largest event in Swift Current’s history. In order to host an event of this magnitude, 2,000 enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers are required to “Get in the Game” and assist with the planning and execution of the 2019 WCSG.
“From ticket takers to scorekeepers to stage hands—there are jobs for almost anyone and everyone!” exclaimed director of volunteers, Sheena Gatzke, “The investment of your time and talent will be worth it.” The official launch of the volunteer recruitment period of the WCSG took place at the Credit Union iPlex on January 21. The event showcased the “2,000 Metre Race” campaign to recruit volunteers, an overview of the work that has been done to date and recognition and celebration of current volunteers. “Over the past year, many hours have been put into Games planning and preparation by volunteers and
the Games office staff,” said Gatzke. “Now we need to step it way up—the actual Games, including sport, transportation, food services, culture, IT, athlete’s village, facilities, marketing and promotion, volunteer services, need assistance. We are going to have an influx of about 12,000 people into our city and surrounding communities and we want to make sure we put our best foot forward. So, please, Get In the Game!” Volunteers interested in registering for the Games may do so through the website at www.2019wcsg. ca/volunteer. For more information, contact the Games Office at 306-7781678 or email volunteer@2019wcsg. ca.

She’s training in combat, militarizing her home and remaining ever vigilant, to the embarrassment of her family. But boy does

But by week’s end, all the confusing points should finally be cleared up. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel overwhelmed by all the tasks you suddenly have to take care of. But just say the magic word — help! — and you’ll soon find others rushing to offer muchneeded assistance. of an abandoned house, where they come across an unpublished manuscript for a Stine book titled “Haunted Halloween.” They unlock the book, and the shenanigans begin, with Slappy bringing the whole town’s Halloween decorations to life. The boys get a big assist from Sonny’s bright older sister Sarah (Madison Iseman). It’s a pretty cute take on “scary,” but the attention
won’t hold for adults or older teens (despite the cast inclusion of adult comedy staples Ken Jeong and Chris Parnell). “The Bookshop” (PG) — “The Bookshop” is a sweet and thoughtful film about a woman who opens a bookshop in 1959 coastal England, and her interactions with local customers and detractors. Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) is a middle-aged widow who takes up residence in a musty old historical building and opens a bookshop, attempting to broaden the horizons of the townsfolk. She sees some success — particularly, admiration from one local man, Mr. Brundish (Bill Nighy) — and some struggles, too. Another local busybody (Patricia Clarkson) has her own plans for the bookshop’s location. Based on the novel by Penelope Fitzgerald. “Jonathan” (R) — In one
body, two residents — dual consciences, or brothers, if you will. One, a straightlaced prodigy, the other a looser, more relaxed creature of the night. They are tended by a psychologist and doctor (Patricia Clarkson), who has split their day so that they share their time. And it’s all fine until the night owl forms a relationship with a girl (Suki Waterhouse), and the daytime version finds out. It’s suspenseful and dramatic. Make colorful window decorations to brighten your child’s bedroom during gloomy winter days. When the glue has dried, these sun catchers will have the look of stained glass. Help your kids create a design of a character or object from their favorite books and stories. You’ll need: — Plastic wrap — Plastic or paper cups — All-purpose, white household glue — Food coloring — Several thick, black pipe cleaners in 12-inch lengths — Ribbon, string or cording Think about what kind of sun catcher you’d like to make, such as a star, heart or daisy. For your first project, make it as simple as possible. Use basic drawings from color-
ing books to get yours started, if you wish. As you get more proficient, make a
important that pipe cleaners adhere to the plastic wrap.) Your design should look similar to the outlines on a coloring-book page. Let dry. Now it’s time to add the color. Pour 3-4 tablespoons of glue into a paper cup. Add 5-10 drops of food coloring, and stir. Mix glue and food coloring in additional cups if you wish to have a rainbow of colors. Pour
shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day or a decorated egg for Easter. Bend and attach pipe cleaners together to get your desired shape, and then glue the shape completely flat onto a sheet of plastic wrap. By Dana Jackson Q: How many years has “Modern Family” been on the air? When will its last season air? — A.R. A: “Modern Family” began on ABC in 2009 and quickly became a huge hit. Last year, creators of the sitcom hinted that the current season, its 10th, would be “Modern Family’s” last. They said it felt right to conclude it after a decade. More recent reports hint that they’re giving it one last go-around. Julie Bowen, who plays Type A mom Claire Dunphy, told “Entertainment Tonight” that the cast was
Julie Bowen approached by the network about doing another season next fall, and that she and her fellow cast members gave a resounding yes. Bowen said with
ABC buying FOX, “there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes action that has to happen at FOX. There’s an extra building worth of paperwork it has to go through.” I definitely would count on another season of the Pritchetts and Dunphys. Q: My wife and I have become big fans of the “Doc Martin” series, having watched all eight seasons. Will there be any more to the series? — C.N. A: The British comedy “Doc Martin” has been around since 2004 with a new series (what we call seasons) released every two years. There have been eight series in total as of 2016. According to Buffalo Pictures, which produces the show, the next chapter will begin filming in 2019 with its star, Martin Clunes.

Stiles took a break from acting back in 2000 to attend Columbia University, where she studied English. Two years later she returned to her first love and began co-starring with Matt Damon in “The Bourne Identity” and its sequels. In between the blockbuster films, she’s been acting in acclaimed television shows like “Dexter” and “Blue.” Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com!

in the form of “Northern Exposure”? Q: Whatever happened to Julia Stiles? I know she went off to college at one point. Did she quit acting? — K.D. A: Stile’s latest project is the mystery-drama series “Riviera,” which first aired in the U.K. in 2017. However, the Ovation channel here in the U.S. will start broadcasting the first season starting Saturday, Feb. 9, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. “Riviera” is about the bold and beautiful people of the art world, featuring plenty of footage of the gorgeous French coastline. Stiles plays a newlywed art curator whose wealthy husband, played
As you know, “Doc Martin” is about a socially awkward surgeon who suddenly develops a phobia that makes it impossible to practice his profession. As a result, he relocates to a small fishing village, where he’s greeted by many colorful characters, much to his dismay. In 2015, it was reported that Marta Kauffman, who co-created “Friends,” planned to adapt “Doc Martin” into a new series with a new cast for American audiences. However, no further announcements have been made, so it appears those plans have been scrapped. In a way, though, didn’t we already have a series with a similar premise

HOLLYWOOD — Alexander Skarsgard — who scored big with the title role in “The Legend of Tarzan” (2016), won an Emmy for “Big Little Lies” and starred in six episodes of the BBC series “The Little Drummer Girl”
(with Michael Shannon) — is now shooting the epic “Godzilla vs. Kong,” with Rebecca Hall (for May 2020 release). Will Smith will be “The Genie,” voiced by Robin Williams in the original “Aladdin.” The animated
1992 film grossed $504 million worldwide, and the live Broadway show has been grossing, on average, over $1 million a week. Mena Massoud (of Amazon’s “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) will be Aladdin. Guy Ritchie is directing for a May 22 premiere. Broadway musicals once were based on books and written by the likes of Rodgers and Hammerstein (“The Sound of Music,” “Oklahoma,” The King and I”) and Lerner and Loewe (“My Fair Lady” and “Camelot”), but as blockbuster movies star comicbook heroes, Broadway has turned to movies made into musicals. Films such as “Waitress,” “Kinky Boots,” “Mean Girls,” “Frozen,” “Aladdin,” “Pretty Woman,”
the musical “Beetlejuice,” based on the 1988 film, is prepping for a March opening. In the wings are musical revamps of “Tootsie” (in April) and “Moulin Rouge,” with Aaron Tveit (Tripp Van Bilt in “Gossip Girl,” Enjolras in the film “Les Miserables” and Danny Zuko in “Grease Live” in 2016), is set for June. The CBS eye is smiling now that the network’s 25-acre CBS Television City, built in 1952 at Fairfax and Beverly, has been sold for $750 million to Hackman Capital Partners, which also owns Culver Studios in Culver City. The Culver Studios, once Selznick Studios, was owned by David O. Selznick, the producer who made many classic films on that lot, includ-
Alexander Skarsgard “Network” and even “King Kong the Musical” have fared well, while last season’s “Groundhog Day” and “SpongeBob SquarePants” failed to recoup their investments. “Clueless: The Musical,” the off-Broadway stage adaption of the 1995 film, is hoping for a move to Broadway, while
ing “Gone With the Wind.” CBS will continue shooting shows such as “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Price Is Right,” “Dancing With the Stars” and “The Late, Late Show With James Corden,” for five years, without the expense of running the complex. But the CBS eye is bloodshot by its treatment of former Chairman Les Moonves. It’s trying to deny him his $120 million severance package before there has been any kind of trial or court to decide if he is guilty of the “Me Too” charges, which he denies. You can be sure this will be in arbitration for some time. It’ll take a lot of Visine to “get the red out” of the CBS eye.

• It was Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, communist revolutionary and the first leader of the Soviet Union, who made the following sage observation: “One fool can ask more questions in a minute than 12 wise men can answer in an hour.” • Back in 1893, when the zipper was invented, the device was intended to be used for fastening shoes. • When the TV sitcom “The Addams Family” was being cast in the early 1960s, actor John Astin came in to audition for the role of Lurch, the cadaverous butler. He was immediately rejected for the part. As he was leaving the room, though, the producer spotted him, pulled him aside, and immediately offered him the role of Gomez — the lead. All he had to do was grow a mustache. • What do the words “obscene,” “tranquil,” “mediate,” “catastrophe,” “dire,” “critical,” “vast” and “apostrophe” have in common? All of them appeared in print for the first time in the works of William Shakespeare. • As the Black Plague was sweeping Europe during the Middle Ages, some people, for reasons surpassing understanding, believed that plague

How’s your health? If you’re in need of incentives to eat better and add more fruits and vegetables to your diet this year, here’s some motivation for you! A new medical analysis finds that eating five to 10 servings of fruits and veggies every day can reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, cancer and early death. Vegetables and fruit are not only loaded with vitamins and minerals, but are also high in antioxidant-rich phytonutrients, such as flavonoids, lycopene and beta-carotene. Research shows that they help prevent, and may
even reverse, a wide variety of chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, eating lots of vegetables and fruit reduces your risk of catching seasonal colds and flu. If you’re concerned about your weight, a diet rich in vegetables and fruit is associated with better weight control and can even aid in your weightloss efforts. To get started, try to eat a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and then slowly work toward more. If this seems overwhelming, start the day with 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice. Slice bananas or strawberries on top of your cereal. Have a salad with lunch, and an apple for an afternoon snack. Include a vegetable with dinner, and you’ll already have five a day. To reach a goal of 10 serv-

ings per day, try adding a piece of fruit for a snack or an extra vegetable (like carrots or green beans) at dinner. There are so many choices when selecting fruits and vegetables. Have you ever tried kiwi fruit? How about asparagus? Try something new that helps you reach your five to 10 a day goal. Keep things fresh and interesting by combining fruits
and vegetables of different flavors and colors, like red grapes with pineapple chunks, or cucumbers and red peppers. You can get your 5 to 10 a day in many ways because fruits and vegetables come fresh, frozen, canned, dried and as 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice. Here’s an easy guide to determining a serving: — a medium-size piece of fruit — 3/4 cup (6 fluid ounces) of 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice — 1/2 cup cooked or canned vegetables or fruit — 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables — 1/2 cup cooked dry peas or beans — 1/4 cup dried fruit When you keep fruits and vegetables visible and easily accessible, you tend to eat them more; for instance, store cut-andcleaned produce at eyelevel in the refrigerator, or keep a big bowl of fruit on the table. Try this delicious recipe for Power-Packed Breakfast Muffins, and you’ll be on your way to five to 10 a day in no time!
•1 cup flour, whole wheat •1 cup flour, all-purpose •1 teaspoon baking soda •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon nutmeg •1/2 teaspoon cinnamon •1/2 cup sugar or stevia •1 tablespoon brown sugar •4 tablespoon butter, unsalted, softened •2 large eggs •1 teaspoon vanilla extract •1/2 cup broccoli florets, steamed •1 small zucchini •1 medium carrot •1/2 medium apple •1 medium banana •2 tablespoons apple juice •1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened •1/4 cup nonfat yogurt, plain Heat oven to 350 F. In a medium-size bowl, mix together flours, baking soda, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. Set aside. In a mixer or another large bowl, mix the sugars, butter, eggs and vanilla. Beat well. In a food processor, combine the steamed broccoli, zucchini, carrot, apple, banana, apple juice and applesauce. Pulse until thoroughly mixed.
Combine the fruit and veggie puree, and the yogurt, into the wet ingredient mixture (sugar/butter/eggs) and beat until mixed. Add the dry ingredients and mix just until wellcombined into a batter. Line muffin cups either with paper or foil liners. If you prefer, grease the cups or liners lightly. For reduced-fat recipes, spraying the muffin cups or paper liners with nonstick cooking spray will help prevent sticking. Scoop the batter into a prepared muffin cups, filling each cup about 3/4 of the way full. For mini muffins: Bake in a 350 F oven for 15-20 minutes, turning the pan after 10 minutes. For regular-size muffins: Bake in a 375 F oven for about 20-25 minutes, turning the pan after 1 -minutes. Bake until the tops are slightly brown and a toothpick comes out clean, or they bounce back when you touch them in the center with your finger. Yields 36 mini muffins or 20-24 regular-size muffins. How to improve your circulation The human body is a complex, efficient machine. One highly important component of that machine is the circulatory system, which sends blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. In perfectly healthy bodies, blood, oxygen and nutrients circulate throughout the body without issue. However, several conditions, including obesity and diabetes, can contribute to poor circulation, which is not a standalone condition but rather a byproduct of another serious health issue.
According to the health information site Healthline, when the circulatory system is not working at optimal capacity, people may experience tingling, numbness and throbbing or stinging pain in the limbs. Pain and muscle cramps also may result from poor circulation, the symptoms of which vary depending on the causes. For example, someone whose circulation issues are a result of peripheral artery disease may experience different symptoms than someone whose circulation has been compro-
mised by diabetes. Because issues affecting the circulatory system are complex, it’s important for men and women to learn how to address such issues if they suspect their systems have been compromised. • Visit your physician. Poor circulation results from various health issues, so people who think they are dealing with poor circulation should not try to address the issue on their own. Rather, the best way to improve circulation is to visit a physician the moment you note a symp-
tom. Doctors will confirm if patients are experiencing circulation issues and diagnose what’s causing those issues. Doctors also will work with their patients to devise a course of treatment for the issue that’s causing their poor circulation. • If necessary, lose weight and keep it off. Obesity is one of the conditions that can contribute to poor circulation. So many people who are diagnosed with poor circulation may be advised to lose weight and keep the weight off once it’s been lost. A 2009
study published in the International Journal of Cardiology found that losing weight helped obese women improve their circulation. A healthy diet that includes fish like salmon that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to improve circulation, can help people lose weight and maintain healthy weights going forward. • Consider yoga. A 2014 review of an assortment of peer-reviewed studies found that yoga can have a positive impact on risk factors for cardiovascular dis-
A11
ease. A low-impact exercise, yoga can compress and decompress veins, potentially improving circulation. It takes time to master yoga positions, but even beginners who cannot fully perform poses during a yoga regimen can benefit from doing the exercises to the best of their abilities. Poor circulation is a byproduct of various conditions. Once a condition has been diagnosed, patients can help themselves by taking various steps to improve their circulation.
How mattresses affect sleep quality People make many renovations around their homes to improve their quality of life. When attention turns to the bedroom, some changes can greatly affect quality of sleep. The temperature of the bedroom, its configuration and lighting can impact a person’s ability to get a good night’s sleep. However, the item that may bear the most influence is the mattress. The Better Sleep Council says whether one wakes up feeling rested and healthy depends largely on the age of a mattress and its condition. A good mattress should alleviate pressure on joints while providing bodily support. It should not be a contributor to aches and pains. Mattresses that are seven years or older may need to be replaced. A century or two ago, mattresses were constructed of whatever people had on hand — from feathers to pine needles to straw. That’s all changed today. But even though there are many options, it’s key for people to discover which material is right for them.
Innerspring Innerspring (also called coil) mattresses have been around for some time. These metal springs provide internal support. The number of coils, types of coils and distribution pattern throughout the mattress impacts how well the bed will conform to the body. These mattresses may be best for back or stomach sleepers due to their level of support. Keep in mind that innerspring mattresses may have limited durability and may start to sag after just a few years.
around in bed. Memory foam provides a high level of pressure point relief and promotes proper spine alignment. Gel foam Gel foam mattresses bounce back to their original form when pressure is
released. Hollow columns in the mattress allow for increased air flow that improves this pressure release and enables people to sleep coolly and comfortably. Sometimes gel is paired with memory foam for a hybrid mattress.
Memory foam Memory foam mattresses are relatively recent additions to the market. According to the mattress shopping resource The Sleep Judge, memory foam mattresses may eventually replace innerspring mattresses. Famous for its ability to contour to the shape of the user’s body, memory foam envelops a person and absorbs energy. This means there’s less motion transfer. That’s a big plus when sleeping with a partner who moves
Latex Latex mattresses are coveted due to their durability and comfort. Latex also conforms to the body, but more generally than memory foam, so it bounces back quickly. One of the biggest draws to latex mattresses is how natural they
are. Latex is made from natural rubber. Cost can be prohibitive, however, as latex mattresses tend to be expensive. Purchasing a new mattress can lead to better sleep. This is a bedroom renovation worth pursuing.

The bacteria that cause meningitis can spread when people who are infected cough or sneeze. That’s what makes it especially contagious in places where close contact is common, such as college dorms and even military barracks. Meningitis also causes
an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, called the meninges. The Mayo Clinic says, if left untreated, meningitis complications can be severe and include permanent neurological damage. Some complications can include gait problems, hearing loss, difficulty with memory, brain damage, seizures, and kidney failure. Meningitis often peaks in winter into early spring, right during the time influenza occurs. Many
symptoms of both conditions overlap, including fever, neck stiffness, lethargy, nausea, unrelenting headache, and confusion. Because meningitis may be mistaken for flu, this can delay the onset of treatment. While a regimen of antibiotics can help treat meningitis and meningococcal disease, the best defense is to mount a successful offense through vaccination. The CDC, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the American College
Health Association recommend meningitis vaccines. Vaccination produces immunity within seven to 10 days and remains effective for approximately three to five years. Two vaccines protect against four types of meningococcal disease. An additional type of vaccine protects against serotype B, which also causes meningitis. Preteens are often given the vaccinations, with a booster dose at age 16. Meningitis is a serious illness, but one that can be prevented or managed.
Overcoming everyday aches and pains Pain is a significant concern for many people. Estimates from the International Association for the Study of Pain suggest that one in five adults across the globe suffer from pain. Pain can affect anyone, even people who have not been in an accident or suffered an injury while playing a sport or performing another physical activity. For example, lower back pain, which can be caused by sitting at a desk for long stretches of time, is the most common type of chronic pain. Such pain may be unavoidable, but that does not mean it and other types of everyday
aches and pains cannot be overcome.

1. Begin a well-rounded exercise regimen. Regular exercise that includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow and helps build a strong core. A strong core supports the spine and reduces the pressure on it, making it less likely people who sit for long stretches at a time will end their days with lower back pain. Routine exercise also helps other areas of the body by keeping muscles loose and flexible. Before beginning a new exercise regimen,

men and women, especially those with existing aches and pains, should consult their physicians about which exercises they should do and which they might want to avoid. 2. Employ RICE. RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation, can help men and women overcome the aches and pains that result as the body ages and tendons begin to lose some of their elasticity. RICE might be most helpful for people who have been diagnosed with tendinitis. Athletes over 40 who engage in activities that require repetitive motion might need to take more days off between rounds of
golf or other competitive and/or repetitive activities. If tendinitis flares up, take some time away, icing any sore areas, wrapping them in bandages, and elevating them while resting. Athletes rarely want to sit on the sidelines, but a few days off can go a long way toward alleviating the pain associated with tendinitis.

they perform such activities. Doing so can prevent the kinds of muscle strains associated with aging. Pain affects more than one billion people across the globe. But some simple strategies can help people overcome pain and enjoy a rich quality of life.
3. Recognize your body may develop some limitations. Age should not prevent you from being physically active, and numerous studies have touted the benefits of continuing to exercise into your golden years. However, as the body ages, muscle fibers become less
