Local footballers headed to Texas By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer When Saskatchewan heads south to participate in the International Pigskin Bowl/Tournament in Texas in February Yorkton will be wellrepresented in the four age category teams. Overall a dozen Yorkton football players have been selected to the various rosters, explained Jason Boyda who will be the head coach on the Under-14 squad.

Boyda said the players involved took part in try-outs in Moose Jaw in November. “There was close to 400 kids trying out for all the teams,” said Boyda, adding the U14 team he coaches “had around 130 kids try out.” Boyda said the try-outs were open. “It was open to anyone in Saskatchewan to try out,” he said, adding they had youth from across the province and from six-

player, nine-player and full 12s programs. Boyda said this is the fourth year for the program and in those four years he has seen significant improvement in the players in particular in terms of “their football IQ.” There are also better athletes involved in youth football today, players who may have played soccer and basketball and are new using the athleticism in pursuing football as well.

Boyda added he is a big proponent of youth playing a variety of sports. “The more sports the better, you don’t have to specialize,” he said. Following the team selections players have been practicing every second weekend with their teams, again in Moose Jaw. That process has included having American coaches visit to help with skill development, said Boyda. While American youth typically play more foot-

ball, the difference in overall skill is not so great, as Team Saskatchewan did return from Texas last year with one divisional crown. This year’s event will include Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and teams from across the United States, and Mexico. The Yorkton contingent of players include on the Under-10/11 Team: Gage Keller, Royce Rathgeber, and Jordanna Watrych. The Under-12 Team

will include Owen Watrych. On the U14 squad with Boyda as head coach will be; Jaxon Boyda at defensive back, Jake Farrell at quarterback, Noah Schiender at wide receiver, Josh Forster on the defensive line and Tristan Watrych at defensive back. On the U 16 Team are Fayden Grymak on the defensive line, Dylan Lepowick at running back, and David Neumeier on the offensive line.

Beef belongs on the plate in new food guide Beef remains a part of the revised Canada Food Guide launched today by Health Canada. While Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) welcomes the Food Guide’s promotion of healthy eating and overall nutritional well-being, we are concerned that the Guide downplays the benefits of beef as part of a healthy diet and sustainable environment. “We recognize that consumers have more protein choices than they have ever had before, but we believe that beef is still a safe, healthy and nutritious protein source,” stated SSGA President Bill

Huber. “We encourage people to choose beef which is produced sustainably by thousands of beef producers across Canada.” A small amount of lean beef can provide high-quality, easily available protein and many other nutrients with relatively few calories. To get an equal amount of protein from other sources could mean consuming higher volumes and more calories. Moreover, combining beef with recommended servings of vegetables provides a synergetic effect and helps the body absorb nutrients more efficiently.

Beef provides several essential nutrients including high-quality, complete protein, all essential amino acids, readily available iron and zinc, and others such as riboflavin, niacin, selenium and vitamins B6 and B12. Reducing red meat consumption could put some Canadians at risk of iron, zinc, vitamin B12 deficiencies and inadequate protein intake. While the Guide references the footprint of food production, it overlooks the many environmental benefits of beef production. Compared to other countries, Canadian beef cattle production has one

of the highest levels of sustainability and efficiency and one of the lowest rates of greenhouse gas emissions due to efficient grazing practices and improvements in feed-efficiency. In Canada cattle graze marginal lands unsuitable for producing other food crops and turn it into high quality protein. “Cattle are also helping to conserve our remaining native grasslands. We’ve lost about 70% of the native grasslands in North America to cultivation and development which has destroyed natural habitat for species at risk and other wildlife,” the SSGA president added.

Whooping cranes continue to do well In 1941 only 21 Whooping Cranes existed in the world and many thought North America’s tallest bird was doomed to extinction. Through decades of dedicated and painstaking efforts the endangered Whooping Cranes now numbers some 650 in the wild. At least 500 of those Whooping Cranes survive in the Wood Buffalo Aransas Texas flock that migrates through Saskatchewan, the exact number won’t be available

until after counts are completed later this winter. Each spring and fall Whooping Cranes migrate through Saskatchewan to and from their wintering grounds on the Texas Gulf Coast and Wood Buffalo National Park on the border between Alberta and the Northwest Territories. This past fall, 151 were observed near Marcelin, north of Saskatoon. This is the largest congregation of Whooping Cranes sighted in one bunch in over 100 years. Production of young

Best RRSP Rate in Town was lower than average in 2018, with only 6 young being spotted in that large flock, a total of 24 young fledged in 2018. Over the years captive breeding of Whooping Cranes has been successful, with eggs or offspring being introduced in 4 locations in the United States to create additional popu-

lations of whoopers. Two of these re-establishment programs have failed (Idaho and Florida) while two others have achieved limited success (Wisconsin and Louisiana). Currently there are about 100 birds in the Eastern Migratory Flock summering in Wisconsin and another 50 birds in

Brother and sister win $1 million on Western Max “When it comes to money, I often think about a quote I read a long time ago,” said Michele Hahn. “‘Money is like manure; it’s only good if you spread it around.’” And that’s exactly what Michele and her brother Gerhard plan to do after winning $1 million on the January 11 WESTERN MAX draw. “I think the most important thing we’re both going to do is share with our family,” said Michele. “I’ve always thought that helping loved ones is the best feeling.” Gerhard agreed with his sister. “We both decided a long time ago that if we ever

won the lottery, a lot of people would benefit from the win,” said Gerhard. “It’s really nice that we’re able to make things easier for everyone.” The Hahn siblings’ $3 quick pick ticket was purchased as part of a $24 Super Pack. Michele bought the winning ticket at the Pharmasave located at 203 Broadway Street in Fort Qu’Appelle. Their winning numbers were 2, 25, 34, 36, 37, 46, and 49. diced •1 can no-salt-added cannellini beans •8 ounces broccoli rabe, cut bite-size •1 medium zucchini, cut in half lengthwise and diced •4 ounces green beans •1 cup packed parsley leaves •2 tablespoons grated Parmesan •1 pound plum (Roma) tomatoes Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a heavy 5- to 6-quart pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Stir in onion; cover and cook 5

minutes or until golden, stirring occasionally. Add 2 teaspoons garlic; cook 30 seconds until fragrant. Add 4 cups water and the broth; bring to a boil. Add pasta and carrot; boil 5 minutes. Reserve 3/4 cup of the cannellini beans; stir rest into pot along with broccoli rabe, zucchini and green beans. Return to a boil and boil 5 minutes or until pasta and vegetables are tender. Meanwhile puree remaining beans, 5 teaspoons oil, 1 teaspoons garlic, 1/4 cup water, parsley and the cheese in a food processor or blender. Remove from heat; stir tomatoes into soup. Stir in the parsley mixture or

serve it alongside. Serves 4. TIP: Broccoli rabe stems cook tender, meaning that unlike collards and kale, you don’t need to pull the leaves off the stems. Cut off (and discard) the stems just below the string or wire tie binding them. Remove the tie, and hold on to the bunch as long as you can while you slice the stalks and leaves. Wash well before cooking. A bunch of broccoli rabe usually weighs around 1 pound. Portobello Parmesan Stuff mushrooms with marinara, mozzarella and

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

If you are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids, you can register to be a part of this new hearing study† by calling: 1.888.242.4892 or visiting connecthearing.ca/hearing-study.

By Dana Jackson Q: Is Sean Murray, who plays Tim McGee on “NCIS,” leaving the show as others have recently? The reason I’m asking is, in the Jan. 7 episode, he mentioned to Kasie that he was being approached by a “headhunter,” and he seemed to be thrilled by it. — Richard W. A: Murray, who has been with the cast of “NCIS” since its first season in 2003, has not announced any official departure plans, but with so many cast changes on the hit show in recent years, it wouldn’t be a shock if he did. Murray did, however, sign a two-year contract extension in 2016, so perhaps the headhunter mention was put there by the writers just in case Murray or CBS decides not to renew his contract. Q: When is the live version of “West Side Story” going to be on TV, and which network will air it? I’ve loved all the Broadway shows they’ve redone, especially “Sound of Music” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” — G.P. A: The remake of “West Side Story” isn’t going to be a live TV musical. Instead

Sean Murray it will be a feature film, much like how “Chicago” and “Les Miserables” were reimagined for the big screen. One reason why the new “West Side Story” is highly anticipated is because Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg will direct and produce the film. He and screenwriter Tony Kushner have taken a lot of time to ensure the musical does justice to the original 1961 film, and that it also earns the approval of the Puerto Rican community. According to “Deadline,” Spielberg and his team have been meeting with Hispanic heritage and advocacy groups, and also met with students and professors from the University of Puerto Rico. They’ve also found their Maria. After auditioning more than 30,000 applicants, 17-year-old high school student

Rachel Zegler from New Jersey will play the lead. Her world is about to change as she joins Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) as Tony, and Broadway actors David Alvarez, Ariana DeBose and Josh Andre Rivera as Bernardo, Anita and Chino, respectively. Filming is set to begin this year. Q: I saw that the show “Temptation Island” is coming back on TV. Wasn’t that canceled a long time ago? — C.J. A: It’s hard to believe but it’s been 16 years since FOX’s reality show “Temptation Island” has been on the air. It was a big hit at first but was canceled after three seasons due to declining ratings. Now the USA Network has revived it, likely due to the success of ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” and anticipation over the upcoming American version of the British hit “Love Island.” “Temptation Island” puts four couples on an island surrounded by men and women who look good in swim trunks and bikinis. The couples are then put to the test to see whether they are meant to be together. Like any reality show, take it with a grain of salt — or turn the channel. It’s up to you. Abernethy Housing Authority reappoints members Norma Garrat, Hazel Englot and Linda Englot have been reappointed to the Abernethy Housing Authority Board of Directors. Other members of the board of directors are Shaun Fayant, Ruth Lypka. Lypka is chairperson. The Abernethy Housing Authority is a communitybased organization that provides daily management of 16 housing units constructed and operated

under the terms of a federal-provincial-municipal cost-sharing agreement. Social Services Minister, Paul Merriman, paid tribute to the volunteers who manage the social housing projects in their community.

Saskatchewan has a network of 260 housing authorities and more than 1,400 volunteer members who assist with management of housing units

throughout the province for seniors, low-income families and persons with disabilities. Persons interested in volunteering to serve on

the board of directors for the Abernethy Housing Authority are encouraged to contact the mayor of Abernethy. A local nominating committee recom-

mends board members. Applications for accommodation are available from the manager of the Abernethy Housing Authority.

“This local hands-on approach ensures that the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation responds effectively to the needs of each community.”

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son started having gastrointestinal problems in high school. Approximately three years ago, they became so intense that he couldn’t work. Last May, he finally had surgery for gastric reflux. This helped with the persistent vomiting, but he is still experiencing intractable nausea. After a year of tests and trials of every anti-nausea medication known, he finally was told that he has cyclic vomiting syndrome. He also was told, basically, “We don’t know how to treat it.” He currently is on a trial of a tricyclic antidepressant, but wasn’t given much hope that it would help. Could you suggest any possible treatment? He is only 28, and I can’t imagine him living with this and not being able to

work or participate in life forever after. — M.S. ANSWER: Cyclic vomiting syndrome is best described in children, but is certainly described in adults. It is called “cyclic” because there are periods of multiple vomiting episodes (lasting from one day to a week) interspersed with periods of completely normal health. Children have 12 cycles per year on average, while adults have four. CVS has been associated with migraine headaches, and treatment for migraines is sometimes successful in treating CVS, so it’s possible CVS represents a variant of abdominal migraine. CVS is a difficult diagnosis to make, as it can be easily confused with other causes of recurrent vomiting. Both children and adults often go a long time with incorrect diagnoses, sometimes getting surgeries, like your son did. Treatment should be administered by a clinician experienced in this condition, and unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case with your son. In one series, 3 in 17 adults with CVS had a complete response to tricyclic anti-

like the biopsy to be negative for cancer, and if the HIV test is positive, that’s not good. Doctors also use the word “complaint” to describe the patient’s chief concern; it’s not that we think people are being annoying.

• It was Leroy “Satchel” Paige, arguably the best pitcher in baseball history, who made the following sage observation: “Never look back. Something might be gaining on you.” • The “Harley” in “Harley-Davidson” comes from William Harley, one of the motorcycle company’s three founders. His is a common surname in England with roots in Old English, in which language it means, literally, “pile of rocks.” • A narwhal’s horn isn’t a horn; it’s a tooth — the left front tooth, to be specific. As such, it’s considered to be a tusk, making the narwhal the world’s only animal with a tusk that’s straight rather than curved. The tusk was highly prized in the Middle Ages, fetching as much as 10 times its weight in gold for those fortunate enough to have one to sell. • Those who study such things say that millions of trees are planted accidentally when absent-minded squirrels forget where

they buried their nuts. • Charlie Chan, the fictional Honolulu detective, was created in 1919 by novelist Earl Derr Biggers. The books featuring Chan became so popular that the character made the leap to radio, movies and television. Even though more than a dozen actors have portrayed the detective over the years, not one of them has been of Chinese ancestry. • A scorpion can live for an entire year without eating. • In the 1830s you could give someone a “blizzard.” Back then, of course, the word wasn’t referring to a snowstorm; rather, that phrase meant to give someone a piece of one’s mind. • In the original calculations made by NASA experts, a landing on the moon was thought to have only a 5 percent chance of success. Thought for the Day: “One dog barks at something, the rest bark at him.” — Chinese proverb

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can skim milk or oat bran cause gas? — J.R. ANSWER: Both certainly can cause gas. Skim milk contains the milk sugar lactose, to which many people are intolerant. In mild cases, it causes some gas; severe cases can cause diarrhea. Oat bran is a good fiber source, and all good sources of fiber can cause gas, especially if taken in amounts that are greater than the person is used to. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

depressants, but 13 had at least some response. So I would hold out more than just a little hope for some benefit. Other medications that have been tried include sumatriptan (normally used for migraine), ketorolac (a powerful antiinflammatory medicine) and prochlorperazine (usually used for nausea, and I’m sure your son would have tried it). I would strongly suggest you contact the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association to get more information and suggestions for an expert in your area, at www.cvsaonline. org. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have noticed that the medical profession uses a number of standard words in different ways. For example, “negative” is usually good, and “positive” often is bad news. — N.M.G. Bachelor's Degrees (Four Years) BACHELOR OF INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK

Providing a holistic First Nations teaching perspective, the Indigenous Education program from First Nations University of Canada provides tremendous opportunity whether you want to teach elementary or secondary education.

Parkland College partners with the U of S College of Nursing and Saskatchewan Health Authority to deliver a world class nursing education. Through the use of distributed learning technology, students in Yorkton are able to learn where they live.

The program is generalist in approach. It emphasizes language and arts and requires a concentration in Indigenous education. Specific Indigenous education courses have been designed to introduce teachers to the unique needs of First Nations students.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a non-direct entry four-year degree program, which includes a pre-professional year of university level courses, followed by three years of nursing education and clinical practice opportunities. Admission to the program is a two-step process.

The BSW program from the University of Regina emphasizes preparing students to gain the skills necessary to counsel individuals and groups, develop and administer programs, empower community groups, conduct social research, analyze programs, policies and issues, and develop and implement problem solving strategies. The program is generalist in approach and will prepare you to work with disadvantaged and minority groups in urban, rural, and remote areas. Classes are available as a mixture of face-toface, blended, and online delivery.

University Classes FIRST YEAR & DISTANCE DELIVERY Thanks to partnerships with the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina, students are able to take the first year of almost any undergraduate degree from the two institutions at Parkland College. First-year students take classes in a wide range of subject areas to get a broader understanding of learning at the university level. The College’s smaller class sizes and access to instructors often help students get better grades. At the end of your first year, you can apply for professional programs such as Pharmacy & Nutrition, Nursing, etc. Take a look at our website for the full list of options and then make an appointment with our academic advisor to go over your program plan and ensure you have all of the prerequisites lined up.

Diplomas (Two Years) PRACTICAL NURSING Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are in demand across Canada. There are more job opportunities now than ever before, and more chances to create a career that suits your interests. LPNs typically work in an area of interest such as gerontology, maternal-child, medical, mental health, palliative, pediatric, rehabilitation, or surgical nursing.

Graduate with less debt. Completing a full degree, diploma, or certificate at Parkland College can mean more of your money stays in your pocket. You can save on moving expenses, rent, food, and transportation. Even if you take just one year at Parkland College, the cost savings can be significant. So when you start your career, there's less debt to pay off and more of your paycheque stays with you.

“First Man” (PG-13) — The controversial Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man” does two things: First, it does a commendable job of putting the viewer inside the rocket — the successes and the disasters. Second, it takes a deep dive into the personal life of Armstrong, played stoic and restrained by Ryan Gosling. Armstrong had a rocky road to the moon, from test pilot crashes and personal tragCareer Training

Ryan Gosling in “First Man”. edy, and director Damien Chazelle (who paired with Gosling on “La La Land”) highlights his perseverance through the perilous space race — lost personnel and failed missions that might have sent less enduring astronauts reeling. Although I don’t feel like I know Armstrong any better, the film is worthwhile if only for the NASA history lessons it imparts. “The Hate U Give” (PG13) — Weighty topics are explored in “The Hate U Give,” based on the YA novel by Angie Thomas. Amandla Stenberg plays Starr, a young black woman caught between two worlds: her neighborhood, a poor to workingclass area rife with gang activity; and her school, packed with peers who are predominantly white and privileged. When her best friend — a young black man from the neighborhood named Khalil — is shot at a traffic stop, Starr becomes an unwitting witness to injustice. The story makes national news, and Starr must navigate gang violence, neighborhood politics, class inequality, police and community relations, racial tension and youth activism, all while finding a way to heal. “Johnny English Strikes Again” (PG) — Rowan Atkinson returns as the titular Johnny English, the surprise spy who’s wholly and perhaps delightfully unaware that he’s ridiculously out of his

element. A cyberattack has revealed the identities of all the British operatives, so Agent English is called up to investigate and find the cyberbrains behind the attack. The gag is that Johnny English is a rotary phone in a cellular world, and gag after gag after pratfall and awkward situation reminds us of it. I feel like you either get Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) or you don’t. If you do, you’ll like this movie. “American Renegades” (R) — Navy Seal Matt Barnes (Sullivan Stapleton) leads a ragtag but surprisingly good-looking group of soldiers on an off-the-books mission to recover a pile of Nazi gold. As the story goes, the noble townspeople, rather than have one put over on them, flooded the WHOLE TOWN. So that bullion is at the bottom of a big old lake. Take that, Nazis. Fastforward to the now, and our cowboys aim to take it back — because Navy Seals can dive. Get it? The story is good (Luc Besson wrote the script), but this movie is so bad that not even J.K. Simmons as the commander can save it. NEW TV RELEASES

RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty owners Glen Kozak and Robert Kozak made the official announcement of the renaming of the Wadena facility to the Wadena RE/MAX Curling Club. The RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty brokerage with brokerages in Yorkton and Estevan has recently focused its marketing strategy towards supporting small town clubs and arenas like the Langenburg RE/MAX

be a bargain compared to the many thousands of dollars you would spend for a seat in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The new MercedesBenz Stadium in Atlanta isn’t the only place where cheers, chants and songs of loyal fans will be raising the roof for Super Bowl 53, also known as Super Bowl LIII, on Sunday, Feb. 3. For most fans without Super Bowl tickets, the enthusiasm will be running equally high in living rooms and family rooms all over the country. With a little planning, you and your kids can bring home the stadium with these fun family activ-

HOLLYWOOD — “Aquaman” has passed the $1 billion mark, while Steve Carell’s “Welcome to Marwen” will be lucky to gross $20 million. Just as Broadway has become a haven for movies made into musicals, blockbusting theatrical films are based on comic book super heroes and fantasies. Of the all-time 10 topgrossing films, only No. 2 “Titanic” and No. 7 “Furious 7” are realistic. “Avatar” (No. 1), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (No. 3), “Jurassic World” (No. 5) and “Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows” (No. 10) are pure fantasy, while “Avengers: Infinity War” (No. 4), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (No. 8) and “Black Panther” (No. 9) were comic-book born. Young people go to theaters, while the rest of us download our films. Even Oscar-winning actors such as Nicole Kidman have been lured to these films, as per her Queen Atlanna

Or, bake a batch of thin brownies on a rimmed cookie sheet and cut out football shapes with the football-shaped “can” cutter when slightly cooled. Decorate with white frosting stitching designs. ENJOY TRADITIONAL FOOTBALL STADIUM FARE Prepare hot dogs and brats, and wrap them in parchment or butcher paper, serve beverages in decorated “sports” cups, and scoop bowls of popcorn and peanuts in small paper bags.

PASS THE COOKIES For a special sweet treat, make footballshaped cookies. Roll out chocolate cookie dough on a breadboard and cut out football shapes with a simple homemade cookie cutter. For the cutter, just bend the rim of a small or medium-size empty soup can (without sharp edges) with your hand until it’s in the shape of a football. Place cookies on cookie sheets and bake according to the package or recipe instructions. When the cookies are baked and cool, make stitching marks and laces with white frosting in squeeze tubes. Or make or use a can of white frosting and spoon it into a plastic sandwich bag. Cut a small

midweek. This leaves you free to take advantage of new possibilities — both professional and personal — opening up by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) With both your creative side and your energy levels rising this week, you should be able to tackle that too-long-neglected

project again. A family member might have important news. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An explanation you requested seems to be more confusing than enlightening. You should insist on clarifications now, rather than deal with problems that might arise later. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels might be ebbing a bit. But that’s no excuse for taking catnaps when you could be working on those unfinished tasks. There’ll be time to curl up and relax by week’s end. VIRGO (August 23 to

September 22) It’s a good time to get those ideas out of your head and into a readable format if you hope to have them turned into something doable. A good friend is ready with worthwhile advice. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Careful — you might be stepping into dangerous territory if you decide to “exaggerate” the facts too much. Remember: The truth speaks for itself and needs no embellishment. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although your workplace successes have earned you many admirers, there are some

colleagues who are not among them. Be careful how you proceed with your new project. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have to go into great detail to explain why you’re currently reluctant to make changes to an already prepared plan. Be sure you have all the facts to back yourself up. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Travel plans might still be uncertain. But instead of getting upset about the delay, open yourself up to other possibilities, and begin checking out some alternative destinations.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing conditions might require you to alter some of your plans. While you might be agreeable to this, be prepared with explanations for those who do not want changes made. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Although you might have to deal with some detractors who aren’t too kind in their critiques, you gain points when you’re willing to stand up and defend your work. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for creating a warm and loving environment between yourself and others.

is lending her voice to Morticia Adams in “The Addams Family” reboot (Oct. 18 release). Tom Hanks may be 62, but he’s not slowing down. You’d think being worth $500 million would allow him more time with his wife and four children, but he didn’t win two consecutive best-actor Oscars, four Golden Globes, eight Emmys and a Kennedy Center Honors Award (in 2014) by taking time off. He’s completed “Greyhound,” with Elizabeth Shue, which he wrote, produced and stars in; “Toy Story 4” (out July 21); playing Mr. Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”; and is shooting “Bios,” in which he plays the last man on earth (coming October 2020). There’s nothing like a dame, especially when it’s Dame Judi Dench. At 84 she’s going full-steam ahead with films such as “All Is True,” in which she plays Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, to

Sir Kenneth Branagh’s aging bard (due Dec. 21); the World War II film “Six Minutes to Midnight,” with Eddie Izzard and Jim Broadbent; the fantasy/adventure “Artemis Fowl,” also directed and starring Branagh, with

Josh Gad (coming Aug. 9); and of course “Cats,” as Old Deuteronomy (out Dec. 20). Then there’s Dame Maggie Smith, also 84, who is shooting the “Downton Abbey” film (Sept. 20 release). And we can’t

forget Dame Joan Collins (85), who starred in “The Royals” (the 2015-2018 TV series) and four episodes of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse,” as two different characters. Which only proves that you can’t keep a dame down!
