By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Neil Isleys used to play with an old metal tractor in his grandmother’s toy box. “It was a Massey 44 … It was my uncle’s,” he explained. When he grew up he took the beat up old toy and restored it. “It was missing a fender and seat,” said Isley, who added he took it to a toy show in Saskatoon back in 1996. “I was able to find the parts and the history of the toy.” The idea was to put the restored toy back in the toy box for another generation. But his grandmother said the tractor deserved to be on a shelf, which is just where Isley put it in his Delisle, SK home. Now 22-years later the restored tractor has been joined by more than 200 more in a garage converted into an old style diner where the collection resides. All of the toys were made by the Lincoln Toys, the company Isley, who attended the Yorkton Toy and Collectable Show on the weekend, had learned about at the Saskatoon show. “Lincoln Toys was a Canadian company,” he said, adding they produced toys from 1946 through to 1959 in Windsor, ON. The company’s most successful years were just after the Second World War until the early 1950s. As the fifties wore on the Lincoln toy designs became “out-of-date,” said Isley, adding there was increased competition too coming primarily out of Japan where the toys were cheaper to produce and were more detailed as well. The Lincoln toys were “all pressed steel,” said Isley, who collects with his wife Allison, herself a lover of the Lincoln line. The pressed steel fit with the history of the plant itself. “The company prior to the war did carry accessories,” he said, adding during the war they switched
A real life Toy Story
to producing ammo boxes and then toys after the war to meet the demand of a boom in babies. “Lincoln Specialties, also based in Windsor, ON, was the distributor for the large line of pressed steel toys between 1946 and 1958. Windsor Steel and Ellwood Toys of Tilbury, ON are the two companies which originally produced the Lincoln Toys. Windsor Steel and Ellwood Toys went out of business in the late 1950s. However, their influence on toy design lasted long after as some toy trucks were kept in production by a series of companies, including Li’l Beaver Toys and Saturn Toys, until the early 1970s. The original logo of Li’l Beaver Trucks, a division of Irwin Toys of Toronto, contains both of Canada’s best known symbols, the beaver and the maple leaf,” details www. historymuseum.ca In terms of what toys Lincoln produced, Isley said it was a very diverse array of products. “They had a little bit of everything,” he said. That said, Isley said one of the most notable products were Massey Harris tractors and implements. “They had the contract for Massey Harris in Canada,” he said. Those pieces are highly coveted as they cross the lines among collectors. Not only does an avid Lincoln collector want the various models -- some have wooden wheels, some rubber, others have a seat on a spring others a solid pedestal – but farm toy collectors are on the lookout too.
And even a single toy often had multiple models. “They had three different styles of dump trucks,” he said. And the logos matter too. There are people who collect Coca-Cola or Planters Peanuts memorabilia, so a Lincoln panel truck with those logos have more collectors interested. The Lincoln line also offered toys in various colour schemes, some rather garish. Isley pointed to a grey panel truck, with yellow trim along the bottom, and a red back door. While it might sound hideous he reminded toys are made for children, and they like bright colours. Isley said the hobby has changed. “Canadian and American Pickers (the television shows) have changed the point of view on Canadian toys,” he said. “… It’s not the way it used to be.” Isley said 20 years ago $20-$50 could buy you a nice Lincoln toy, not a rare one, but a good example of a more common model. “Today you wouldn’t be
able to touch it for under $100 even in tough condition,” he said. And then there are the boxes, a real rarity collectors covet. Metal toys can survive a lot of play by children. The box it would have come in is usually tossed away. Again pointing to a Massey tractor model, Isley said it might bring $250. The box would add $1400 to the value. So a couple of years ago when a fellow from Foam Lake approached Isley with a Lincoln Sand Hopper, complete with a box, he was ecstatic and bought it. So what is Isley’s favourite piece? He was quick to point to a TCA airplane, but that is one he has. There are always Holy Grails a collector pursues. Isley’s is a 21-inch Lincoln Crane and Hopper. He admits the piece is something of an oddball, and maybe not as desirable among collectors as the trucks and their logos, but he has grown to appreciate the unusual pieces the company produced.
Neil and Allisin Isley are avid Lincoln Toy collectors.

Cold does not deter snowmobilers By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The 2019 edition of Snowarama was a success in spite of the very cold temperatures that greeted participants Saturday. The event still has 156 riders braving the frigid conditions, combining to raise $141,000. The always popular snowmobile trail ride attracted snowmobile enthusiasts from all over Saskatchewan, and from as far afield as Alberta, all joining forces for a great cause – to raise funds for children and youth experiencing disability. Snowarama is a fundraising event which combines winter fun and community spirit in support of Easter Seals™ Saskatchewan. “We are absolutely thrilled about the support we received this year from the 156 snowmobilers that raised money and showed up despite the cold weather, the corporations that gave financial support
and prize donations, the volunteers that gave their time, and the media who helped to spread awareness,” reported Aleks Hoeber, Program Manager of SaskAbilities, Yorkton Branch in a release Monday. “The funds raised will help children experiencing disabilities make lifelong friendships while experiencing all the joys of camp without limitations at Camp Easter Seal. Local children will be able to access day camp at a fraction of the price and many individuals will benefit from adaptive technologies improving their quality of life.” The top three fundraisers for 2019 were; first, Kenn Propp raising $15,325, followed by Lynn Schmidt who raised $6031, and Bruce Peppler raising $5270. Platinum sponsors of the event include Yorkton Co-op, Yorkton Sno-Riders, Yorkton This Week, The Marketplace, the Saskatchewan Snowmobiling Association,
Fox FM, GX94, and CTV. The Easters Seals Snowarama funds three programs that are offered and operated by SaskAbilities: Adaptive Technology Services, Summer Fun, and Camp Easter Seal. The programs provide self-confidence, independence, and recreational opportunities for individuals experiencing disability.

There’s Snowplace like home “There’s Snowplace like Home,” is a collection of huge sculptures carved out of blocks of snow by four world-class snow carvers. This sculpture collection blends art with science and conveys the fragility of our species at risk, how humans interact and relate to them, and how to maintain the balance between nature and human development. There are currently 28 species at risk being protected in Riding Mountain National Park. The poetry is not lost in the concept of creating snow sculptures of species at risk within Riding Mountain National Park. We all know that in just a few months these sculptures will be gone, and we hope that this concept evokes more in depth
thought of what it means to be protecting spaces where these species can always have a home. https://www.pc.gc.ca/ en/pn-np/mb/riding/activ/ sculpture The Artists: Jacques Boulet: Yin and Yang Tiger Salamanders Jacques Boulet is a freelance Graphic Designer in Winnipeg. YORKTON RURAL RCMP ADDRESS CHANGE
Brendan Wagner left helps a prospective Parkland College student at a recent open house.
College holds open house By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Parkland College held two days of open houses this week to help prospective students get a firsthand look at courses and facilities. “This is the third time we’ve done this,” said college spokesperson Brendan Wagner, adding the first year it was strictly focused in university courses, “Last year we expanded to all of our programs,” he said. “… It’s an opportunity to just stop in and find out what’s available here.” The first day of the open houses focused on the courses available at
the Trades & Technology Centre, while the second gave those interested a look inside the main campus attached to the Regional High School. Wagner said the first night of the open house “was a little slow” but added “when it’s minus 400 degrees it’s tough to get people to come out.” The numbers on day two looked better, he added, adding numbers would likely improve “as parents get off work.”
The local college offers 15-20 courses annually. “It fluctuates depending on industry demand, and community demand,” said Wagner. The college does offer some full degree programs among its courses including nursing from the University of Saskatchewan, social work from the University of Regina, and Indigenous education from the First Nations University of Canada.
Effective February 14, 2019, the Yorkton Rural RCMP and the Yorkton Municipal RCMP detachments will be amalgamating. As of February 14th, 2019, the Yorkton Rural RCMP detachment building will no longer have public access and residents will either need to call 306-786-2400 or go to the Yorkton Municipal Detachment located at 37 3rd Avenue North in Yorkton.

“Widows” (R) — Director Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) kills it in this woman-centric, dark and penetrating crime caper. A gang of crooks is killed while ripping off Chicago mob boss Jamal (Brian Tyree Henry), who pins the debt on the wife of one of the slain thieves. Veronica (Viola Davis) enlists the help of the other “widows” (Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debecki) and the babysitter (Cynthia Erivo) to pull off a job that will wipe the slate clean with the mob boss and secure the ladies’ futures. It’s dramatic, smart and exciting, and not without twists and turns. The film easily could have drifted into a one-note cliche about gender, but the widows (and the fierce men they face) are strong, vulnerable, flawed and heroic
in equal measures. “The Sisters Brothers” (R) — Eli (John C. Reilly) and Charlie (Joaquin Phoenix) Sisters are brothers. They travel the West as assassins on assignment from the murky Commodore, who is after Hermann Warm (Riz Ahmad) who “stole from him.” He’s sent the Sisters brothers to take Warm out, assisted by a scout named John Morris (Jake Gyllenhaal). When Morris finds Warm, who is not a thief at all but a chemist who has discovered how to easily find gold in the river, he switches sides, pitting them against the brothers, who are themselves an assassin target. In the meantime, the brothers riff on the Gold Rush, their own strengths and foibles, and whether they should retire. It’s a smart darkcomedy Western, and that alone makes it worth a watch. “The Grinch” (PG) — The magic of Christmas is once again threated by that notoriously small-hearted, scheming Grinch in the latest telling of Dr. Seuss’s masterpiece. If you don’t
Rosamund Pike in “A Private War”. know the story, perhaps because the rock you live under was buried by an earthquake, let me catch you up. The Grinch (voiced
by Benedict Cumberbatch) is a miserable being who hates Christmas and the Whos down in Whoville, and decides that he must
steal Christmas in order to stop it from being obnoxiously celebrated. Spoiler alert: He’s foiled by his own regret. This version features the Grinch’s backstory as a sad orphan and Cindy Lou as a spunky kid who feels her single mom is overworked and deserves a break from Santa. It’s cute and watchable without being a revolutionary addition to next year’s holiday movie lineup. “A Private War” (R) — Following the incredible war journalist Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike), “A Private War” embeds you alongside Colvin in the many dangerous locations across her decades-
A5
long career, including the perspective of her fellow journalist photographer Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan) and her editor (Tom Hollander). Pike’s outstanding performance echoes the fearless mania of Colvin, who was dogged in her determination to give a voice to the voiceless. Colvin was killed on assignment in 2012. The sale, in its third year, is an opportunity for producers using Speckle Park cattle in their operation to bring their feeder calves to Yorkton where they are sorted into lots based on sex, type and weight, making the resulting pens more attractive to purchase. Josh Vogel, of Legacy Speckle Park near Theodore was the man instrumental in launching the sale three years ago. “It was basically organized by me and Heartland,” he said. “I just wanted to set up a day to market Speckle Park calves.”
Vogel said the idea is not new as other beef breeders hold pre-sort sales where they focus on marketing that breed’s genetics. This year numbers were up, “which is good,” said Vogel. “We were probably up by 30 per cent. Last year we had close to 200 (head), and this year we had over 300.” This year also saw some big lots sorted from the cattle brought in by producers from Saskatchewan and Manitoba. One lot had 72-head, another 92. The larger lots are more appealing to those buying for feedlots as they come closer to filling a pen with like sized cattle of similar genetics. Vogel said the sale is just another step in building a base for the Speckle Park breed
which is a relative newcomer in terms of beef breeds. Speckle Park is a breed initially developed in Saskatchewan. It is one of only a few beef cattle breeds developed in Canada. The latter half of the breed’s name derives from the characteristic white, black and grey spots and patches of color that it is known for. Speckle Park were officially recognized by the Canadian government in 2006. A breed association was formed in 1985. Vogel, who started in the breed in 2001 with his father, said the work is ongoing to grow the breed. “We still have work to do to have steady demand for calves,” he said. “It’s kind of the chicken and the egg thing. It’s hard to get demand when •3 cups hot cooked noodles, rinsed and drained

In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute meat, celery and onion for 10 minutes. Stir in tomato sauce, undrained stewed tomatoes, parsley flakes, sugar substitute and black pepper. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For each serving, place 1/2 cup noodles on a plate and spoon about 1 cup

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Katie comforted her niece over the loss of her baby. Reese felt tremendous guilt when Taylor stopped by to thank him. Flo gave back as good as she got when Zoe pressured her. While informing Steffy that Hope was back at work, Brooke took the opportunity to query her about Taylor’s connection to Phoebe’s birth mother. Donna, Katie and
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read an article on the pros and cons of a daily aspirin for protection against both heart disease and colon cancer. This is not a new topic, I realize, and I know that the benefits of daily aspirin apply only to certain segments of the population. Here’s my question: If a person doesn’t experience any stomach or bleeding issues, does a much higher dose of aspirin daily also convey the same possibly protective effects? I don’t believe that more is better, but I already take an average of nine 325 mg generic aspirin tablets daily for leg pain. I’m in that 50-59 age group, and there is heart disease on both sides of my family, so
Brooke planned a morning to spend with Hope at the cabin. Wyatt pointed out the similarities between Kelly and Phoebe. Zoe updated Xander about meeting Flo and her frustration that there were still so many unanswered questions. Brooke and Liam urged Hope to open up about her feelings. Liam was surprised when Hope asked if they could visit Phoebe together. Wait to See: Zoe plans to confront Flo one last time. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Hope accused Ben of abducting Ciara. Stefan risked his life to save Chloe’s. Julie tried to persuade Abigail to forgive Chad. Abigail confided in Jordan about I’m hoping this dose confers some cardiac benefit. I would love to find a cure for the deep ache I get in my legs — usually just the right calf. I’ve had these since I was a child, and I’ve reconciled myself to the fact that I will have them for the rest of my life, but the aspirin I take has never caused me stomach pain or excessive bleeding, and it works for the pain. — T.P. ANSWER: The studies showing that taking aspirin protects the heart mostly have been done using 81 mg daily or 325 mg every other day. However, the mechanism of the action, preventing platelets from forming a clot, is even stronger at higher doses, so it would make sense that higher doses would be at least as effective. However, they are much more likely to cause bleeding, even if most people can take higher doses without problems. So it’s recommended you take the minimum effective dose to get the benefit with the least harm. In your case, however, I think
Charlotte was missing. Brady and Stefan both offered Chloe a place to stay. Sarah tried to make amends with Eric. Chad lashed out at Ben before desperately searching for Charlotte. Jack tried reaching out to Abigail. JJ and Haley shared their first kiss. Ciara attempted to trick her captor. Wait to See: Eve pressures Jack to use Haley’s secret to his advantage.
Kirsten Storms stars as “Maxie” on “General Hospital”. her encounter with Ben. Rex and Sarah recommitted to their relationship. John confided to Roman that Leo might be his son. Abigail discovered that you are likely getting all the benefit there may be. I say “may be” because recent studies have failed to replicate the protection seen in earlier studies. I still believe that aspirin is useful in people at higherthan-average risk for heart disease. More and more evidence is coming out that the same low dose of aspirin helps protect against several forms of cancer, especially of the colon. However, I don’t yet recommend it just to protect against cancer, but I will continue to pay careful attention to ongoing studies on aspirin and will revisit this topic when more research becomes available. DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent test, my blood vitamin D level was good, at 43, but my calcitriol level was low at 16. I do have hyperglycemia, but how do I increase my calcitriol level? I take no medications. — J.I.
GENERAL HOSPITAL Franco looked to “Kevin” for advice. Sam met up with Shiloh. Kristina felt energized. Sonny made his intentions clear. Anna received a surprise visit. Franco took Aiden ice skating. Sasha surprised Nina. Jason calcitriol isn’t the right blood test to determine your bone health relative to vitamin D. Calcitriol is an activated form of vitamin D, and it best reflects calcium intake. I suspect low calcium intake when I see a high calcitriol. Since calcitriol removes calcium from the bones, it may worsen osteoporosis. If you haven’t had your kidneys and parathyroid hormone level (which also affects calcium movement in the kidney and bones) checked recently, then do so. If those are OK, then be sure to get enough calcium, especially from dietary sources like leafy green vegetables. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Nikki and Victor pan-
icked as they searched for their missing granddaughter, but thankfully she was found safe. Victor theorized that JT was still alive and working to terrorize their family, prompting Nick to try to track him down. Sharon received a mysterious email claiming to have evidence proving that Victor was the murderer. Abby saw through Mia’s games and demanded to know her true motivation. Kyle assured Lola that she — not Summer — was the only woman for him, but her insecurities continued to linger. Fen realized that he missed his time slot at the LP showcase, where Ana had taken his place and earned rave reviews. Wait to See: A dangerous alliance is exposed.

Seven ways to conquer fatigue at work (NC) — We all deal with weariness at work — it’s normal. Usually if you grab a coffee, have a quick stretch or take a short break, you’ll feel refreshed to push through and finish the day on a strong note. But if you find yourself feeling tired on a regular basis, it might be time to change up your routine. Here, Healthy-worker.ca, an initiative by Public Services Health & Safety Association, recommends seven ways to fight fatigue at the workplace: • Sleep rules. Always get a good night’s sleep. Adults need seven to nine
hours — anything short of that can lead to fatigue, along with an array of other negative health outcomes including obesity, depression and diabetes. So, create a sleep sanctuary by putting away the screen, darkening your room and calling it a day at a reasonable hour. • Limit the stimulants. This means limiting your intake of coffee and caffeinated drinks like soda or energy drinks, especially before bedtime. Regular use of stimulants can throw off the body’s natural ability to stay alert and focused throughout the day.
• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. When you become dehydrated, you’ll feel drained of energy and it will leave you struggling to stay awake. • Exercise is key. If you’re feeling tired, it may not occur to you to get up and move around, but you should. Exercise — however limited — will increase blood flow, supply oxygen to your body and brain, and give you the energy boost you’re lacking. • Don’t worry, be happy. Always try to remain positive. A negative mindset can activate the body’s stress response
system, causing fatigue and other health issues. • Take breaks. It’s easy to forget, especially if you’re working on a tight deadline, but taking short breaks allows your body to recover and your mind to refocus. • Be mindful. Meditation is very popular these days, and for good reason. Even a 10-minute morning meditation practice has been proven to reduce anxiety, help you stay focused and keep you mindful of your surroundings throughout the day. Get tips on finding balance and staying healthy and safe at healthy-worker.ca.

Scams that target seniors (NC) — Many fraudsters target their scams at seniors, believing that they are more vulnerable and easier to trick. This isn’t always true of course, but seniors remain one of the most targeted groups, so it pays to be cautious. Whether you’re a senior or are hoping to keep your parents safe, learn some of the most popular scams and how to protect against them. • Emergency scams. The typical scam starts with a grandparent receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be their grandchild, who says they’re in
trouble and need money immediately. Worried grandparents will act quickly out of concern and have their money or financial information stolen. To guard against these scams, anyone receiving this type of call should take time to verify the story by asking questions and calling the child’s parents or friends to find out about their whereabouts. • Door-to-door scams. With this trick, door-to-door salespeople use high-pressure tactics to convince homeowners to buy a product or sign up for a service they don’t want or need. These aggressive
pitches can be for charitable donations or home maintenance services. In many cases, the product or service is never received while in others they are of poor quality or not as represented. Seniors can protect themselves against these scams by not feeling pressured to make a quick decision and taking time to do some research on the seller and the products first. It’s a good idea to ask for photo ID, get the name of the person and of the company or charity they represent. • Tax scams. There are a couple of variations on this scam – an email, text
or phone call supposedly from the CRA claims the receiver is entitled to an extra refund and all that’s needed are their banking details. Another version is a call that says the receiver owes CRA money right away, or else the caller will file a police report. In either case, it’s not a government agency calling. Here, it’s important to remember that the CRA will never use aggressive or threatening language, ask for payments via prepaid credit cards or gift cards, or collect or distribute payments through e-transfers.

Q: Is it true that Chris Harrison is going to be the next Bachelor? I think it’s a great idea if it’s true. — M.M. A: The longtime host of ABC’s “The Bachelor” and its franchises is 47 years old and divorced. It’s been rumored — or at least hoped — that one day the cameras would be turned and Harrison would become the new bachelor. For now, though, he’s happily dating someone else in the industry, “Entertainment Tonight” correspondent Lauren Zima. However, back in November he appeared on “ET” and joked that he had been “working on my abs ... just in case you need me as the 50-year-old bachelor.” We wish Harrison and Zima all the happiness in the world, but if it doesn’t work out, I’d like to see who Harrison gives his final rose to. Q: What happened to Ariel Winter of “Modern
Family”? I saw a photo of her in a magazine recently, and she looks like she’s lost a lot of weight. She’s beautiful to me whether she’s curvy or skinny. I just hope she’s taking care of herself. — K.P. A: Winter has never been shy about addressing her fans or critics over how she dresses, so it’s not a surprise that she was direct in her response to speculation about her weight loss. Some fans weren’t as kind as you though, and accused her of abusing drugs or getting plastic surgery in order to alter her appearance. In response, Winter denied having surgery and was outraged that people thought she was using drugs like cocaine or meth. Winter further explained on Instagram that she had been on medication that caused weight gain as a side effect, but her physician switched her to another medicine that regulated her metabolism better. Q: When will “The Librarian” movies air on cable, and will the TV show be back again soon? — J.H. A: Alas, you just missed a marathon of “The

Capellini Frittata A satisfying meal made with sauteed onion and red pepper baked in an egg-and-pasta custard. If you have leftover spaghetti in the fridge, use 1 cup of it instead of the cooked capellini. Serve with a green salad, our Spicy Tomato Dressing and a chunk of hearty peasant bread. •2 ounces (about 1/2 cup) capellini or angel hair pasta, broken into pieces •2 teaspoons olive oil •1 small onion, thinly sliced •1 small red pepper, diced •6 large egg whites* •2 large eggs •1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese •1/4 cup fat-free (skim) milk •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce In 2-quart saucepan, heat 3 cups water to boiling over high heat. Add pasta, and cook 2 minutes or just until tender. Drain and set aside. Meanwhile, heat oven to 425 F. In nonstick 10-inch skillet with heatsafe handle, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and red pepper, and cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are tender, about 7 minutes. In large bowl, with wire whisk or fork, beat egg whites, whole eggs, Parmesan, milk, salt and hot pepper sauce; stir in pasta. Pour egg mixture over onion mixture; cover, and cook 3 minutes or

A TV show spinoff added an “S” to its title and aired for four seasons on TNT. Unfortunately, “The Librarians” was canceled by the network last year. Producer Dean Devlin was hoping to shop it around to other channels and streaming services, but there haven’t been any recent updates. Keep checking the Twitter page (https://twitter.com/ LibrariansTNT) periodically to see if there is any news about a fifth season or if the movies are going to air on television again. As for Wyle, keep an eye out for his new drama, “The Red Line,” which is set to premiere this spring on CBS. Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com!

HOLLYWOOD — “Isn’t It Romantic,” which stars Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine, has a lot going for it. It opens on Valentine’s Day and also stars newlyweds Liam Hemsworth (who wed Miley Cyrus on Dec. 23) and Priyanka Chopra (who wed Nick Jonas on Dec. 1). But in the film, Hemsworth is vying for Rebel Wilson’s affection against Adam Devine, and Priyanka Chopra plays a yoga ambassador. Two newlyweds in one film ... Isn’t That Romantic? The litter absorbs moisture, and the beads leave them smelling pretty good.” — D.D. in Missouri

Understanding depression and its symptoms Many people periodically have bad days when they just seem to be in a bad mood. When a bad mood isn’t short-lived, this might be a potential indicator of depression. Depression is a common mental disorder that, according to the World Health Organization, affects more than 300 million people across the globe. The WHO notes that despite the fact that there are known and highly effective treatments for depression, fewer than half of those suffering from
depression receive such treatments. Furthermore, in many countries, fewer than 10 percent of people with depression receive treatment. Learning about depression and how to recognize its symptoms may compel people battling it to seek treatment for this very common and treatable disorder. Why do I have depression? Everyone has a bad day here or there, but people with depression may wonder why theirs
are more than just a bad day. The WHO notes that depression is a byproduct of a complex interaction of social, psychological and biological factors. Exposure to adverse life events, such as unemployment, the death of a loved one or psychological trauma, can increase peoples’ risk of developing depression. Depression also may be caused by physical conditions. The WHO says cardiovascular disease can lead to depression. What are the symptoms of depression? The Mayo Clinic notes that one in 10 people
whose depression goes untreated commit suicide. That only highlights the importance of recognizing the symptoms of depression and acting once any have been identified or suspected. Symptoms can include: • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions • Fatigue • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness • Pessimism and hopelessness • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness or sleeping too much • Irritability • Restlessness
• Loss of interest in things once deemed pleasurable, including sex • Overeating or appetite loss • Aches, pains, headaches, or cramps that won’t go away • Digestive problems that don’t get better, even with treatment • Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” feelings • Suicidal thoughts or attempts Anyone who has exhibited any of the aforementioned symptoms or even those who haven’t but suspect they might be suffering from depression should visit a physician immediately. The WHO
notes there are a variety of treatments available to people who have been diagnosed with depression, and doctors will determine which might be the best for each patient. To make that determination, doctors may inquire about the duration and severity of symptoms as well as family history and whether or not the patient has a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Depression is a common mental disorder that too often goes undiagnosed. Seeking help the moment symptoms are detected or suspected can help people overcome the disorder.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! It’s January, and I shouldn’t have fleas in my house, but they’re everywhere. I don’t give my dog or cat a monthly flea treatment in the winter months because usually the arrival of cold weather means no more fleas. Why are they here, now? — Scratching Madly in Springfield, Massachusetts DEAR SCRATCHING: While cold weather does
send fleas into a dormant state, it’s never guaranteed that they’ll disappear until spring. And a warm location like a nicely heated house or apartment can keep fleas active and multiplying. If you have an active infestation, your pets need to be treated for fleas even if you don’t normally do so. Treat them with the solution you use during the summer months — whether that’s a topical monthly flea treatment, a flea collar or a bath. Comb their coats daily to remove fleas, flea dust and eggs. Likewise, your home needs to be treated for fleas. Remove your pets from the home completely, if possible, or sequester
them in one section of the house. Use a home flea treatment on the floors and furniture, paying attention to corners and crevices. Let the treatment sit for the recommended amount of time and then vacuum the room thoroughly. To prevent another infestation, brush your pets once a day and vacuum your home twice a week throughout the winter. Continue to treat your pets with a flea repellent or preventative. It’s not ideal, but by attacking the problem now, you’ll be less likely go through this again next year, or even next summer. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.
