Finalists announced for Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence Tourism Saskatchewan has announced the names of 36 finalists and three Tourism Builders for the Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence for 2018. Nearly 90 nominations were received in the 13 award categories that acknowledge quality in marketing, service, business practices, human resource development and other areas. The finalists and award recipients will be honoured at the 30th annual Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence Gala, which will be celebrated on April 11 at Teachers’ Credit Union Place in Saskatoon. The gala will be held in conjunction with the HOST Saskatchewan Conference, which takes place earlier that day. Recipients of the Tourism Builder Award will also be honoured that night. The Tourism Builder

Award recognizes individuals who have made tourism an important part of their life’s work and have helped position Saskatchewan as a welcoming destination. “The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to congratulate the 36 award finalists and three Tourism Builders,” Minister Responsible for Tourism Saskatchewan Gene Makowsky said. “They demonstrate impressive leadership and unwavering commitment to providing visitors with remarkable experiences. The gala on April 11 will be a memorable celebration of their achievements.” “TourismSaskatchewan considers it a privilege to host this annual assembly that acknowledges excellence in marketing, human resources, business leadership, lifetime achievement and more,” Tourism Saskatchewan

CEO Mary Taylor-Ash said. “We strive to make the Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence program relevant to tourism operators and businesses, and regularly update criteria and categories to reflect our industry. The 2019 gala will be a special evening, marking the introduction of the first Indigenous Tourism Experience Award.” Tickets for the Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence Gala are $120 (plus GST) or $800 (plus GST) for a corporate table of eight. The evening will start with a networking reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner service at 6:30 p.m. and the award presentations at 8 p.m. For more information about the Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence Gala, visit www.Industry. Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada. Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully. It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day. By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

Available until March 31

The 19th edition of the Saltcoats Vintage Snowmobile Race was held Saturday. While the weather was cold and windy, owners of old snowmobiles, pre1981 sleds only, still coaxed their old machines to life for the race held at the Saltcoats Regional Park. The snowmobile race fundraiser was for the Saltcoats Fire Department.

Not only will it give you a clean look, but it will help to stop drafts and block out bugs, which can creep in through the tiniest of cracks. • “Here’s a tip for making a box cake taste like it was made from scratch: Add an extra egg, use melt-

It’ll be gorgeous.” — T.H. in New Hampshire • “Hide the cords coming from your wall-mounted television by running them through a length of PVC pipe. It can be painted to match your wall, too! Measure the length you need, and your hardware store may be able to cut a piece for you if you can’t find one the right size. It looks so much cleaner, and you can even use doublestick tape to attach the pipe to the wall.” — B.B.

They are always in need, and so deserving.” — F.I. in Texas • “On weekend trips to our cabin, we pack a laundry basket for each bedroom. It includes fresh sheets, towels and the clothing for that person. At the end of the weekend, it’s easy to ‘pack’ those items that need to be laundered. HOLLYWOOD — The success of Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible: Fallout,” which grossed nearly $800 million, has prompted Paramount Pictures to announce there will be a seventh and eighth film in the series. As soon as Cruise finishes “Top Gun Maverick,” due for a July 2020 release, he’ll film both “Mission Impossible” films at age 58 and 59. They’ll be released in July 2021 and August 2022, respectively.

standing,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said. “This month is an opportunity to build trust by teaching children about modern food production and answering their questions.” This year’s theme, food waste, will allow students to explore their role in sustainability.

“Last year more than 2,000 Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month classroom presentations took place in schools across our province, providing more than 8,000 students an opportunity to learn more about our agriculture sector,” Deputy Premier and Education

Minister Gordon Wyant said.

“March is a time for farmers, ranchers and everyone deeply connected to agriculture

to share their personal agriculture story with kids,” Agriculture in the Classroom Executive Director Sara Shymko said. “This year, we are asking volunteers to give a personal example of how they are helping to reduce the problem of food waste.”

In Black: International,” arriving June 14; the crime thriller “Honest Thief,” with Kate Walsh; and the romance drama, “Normal People.” Hemsworth jumps from “Men In Black: International” right into the Netflix drama “Dhaka,” in which he plays a mercenary hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian businessman. If you thought the alleged child molesting controversy over Michael Jackson ended when he died, guess again. A new four-hour, three-part documentary called “Leaving Neverland” may blow the

lid off the scandal. Two boys, who were 7 and 11 at the time and later sued his estate (the case was dismissed), claim, “We felt close to Michael with a kind of love for him and wanted to do whatever it took to please him.” They also admit they never thought what they were being asked to do was wrong. John Travolta is making a film comeback. His last outing as crime boss (John) “Gotti” cost $10 million and only grossed $4.3 million. Travolta, now 64, hits screens in the heist thriller “Finding Steve McQueen,” with Oscar-winner Forest

Whitaker, Travis Fimmel and “Mom’s” William Fichtner, about a gang planning to steal millions from President Richard Nixon’s illegal political slush fund (due March 15). That’s quickly followed by “Trading Paint,” in which he plays a race driver, with Shania Twain and Michael Madsen (out March 22); the crime thriller “The Poison Rose,” with Oscarwinner Morgan Freeman and Brendan Fraser; and the thriller “Moose,” in which he’s a deranged fan who stalks an action hero and destroys his life. It’s based on the true-life experiences of Fred Durst,

lead vocalist for rock band Limp Bizkit, who wrote and directs the film. Charlie Sheen, who had that famous public meltdown, saw his last film, “9/11,” with Gina Gershon, gross just $192,318. His last TV appearances, in “The Goldbergs” (2017) and the Comedy Central series “Typical Rick” (two episodes in 2017), were hardly memorable either. His misfortune is a top topic at Hollywood parties with the revelation, “Hey, they figured out how much drugs Charlie Sheen did when he flipped out ... enough to kill ‘Two and a Half Men’”!!!

In Seattle, a truck driver was so distracted by a display of new Mustangs that he crashed his cement truck through the window of the dealership. In Chicago, so many people were trying to crowd into the cars in a showroom that the

dealer had to lock all the vehicle doors. A dealer in New Jersey had only one Mustang, so he auctioned it off. The winner of the auction insisted on sleeping in his new car that night, just to make sure nobody else got it before his check cleared. • By the time he was 5 years old, 19th-century French composer Camille Saint-Saens was already composing waltzes. Wyatt and Sally told Eric that they were switching from Forrester Creations to Spencer Publications. Hope held Phoebe as if she were Beth. DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about symptoms for women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chest-clutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw,

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Take time from your busy schedule to check out what’s going on around you. You might find that someone has been secretly trying to pull the wool over those beautiful Sheep’s eyes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s boldness pays off in uncovering the source of a disturbing workplace situation. Your personal life calls for patience, as a certain matter plays itself out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Forget about going all out to impress someone in your personal life. Just being yourself is all that matters. A workplace decision will need more time. Don’t rush into it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some supersensitive Crabs might take offense at what they per-

Did you know? Being overweight is a risk factor for diabetes, but the American Diabetes Association notes that many people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are at a normal weight or only moderately overweight. Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a nutritious diet are two great ways to reduce your risk for diabetes, but even people who make such choices can still develop type 2 diabetes. For example, smokers may eat right and exercise, but their decision to light up can increase their risk for type 2 diabetes. That’s because smoking raises levels of bad cholesterol in the blood and increases blood pressure. Each of those things increases a person’s risk of developing diabetes. Genetics also plays a role in a person’s risk of developing diabetes, regardless of the size of his or her waistline. According to the ADA, people whose mother, father, sister, or brother have or have had heart disease or diabetes are at a greater risk of developing diabetes than people with no such family history.

neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? — J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symp-

toms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular

physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise — even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs — is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously,

especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? — E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and

diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

ceive as a slight. But a closer look points to a simple misunderstanding. The weekend holds a welcome surprise. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Sure, you can roar your head off over someone’s failure to keep a promise. But the wiser course

would be to ask why it happened. Be prepared for an answer that might well surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A developing relationship needs time to find its direction. So please be patient and resist pushing things along. A recently cooleddown workplace situation could heat up again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Congratulations. Your well-thought-out proposal seems to be work-

ing. Someone who hasn’t agreed with you on most things in the past could turn out to be one of your major supporters. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things seem to be going well. However, you can still expect criticism -- some of it pretty heavy. But as long as you can back up your position, you’ll be able to rise above it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Getting together with people who care for you is

a great way to get that ego boost you might feel you need at this time. Things start to look brighter by week’s end. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) You should be able to continue with your plans once you get past those temporary delays. Surprise, surprise. An offer to help comes from a most unlikely source. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing your tasks is important this week because of all

those demands you have to deal with. The pressure eases in time for you to enjoy the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Save your energy and stay focused on what has to be done, despite all those distractions you’re likely to face. You should see some evidence of real progress by week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a generous, giving person who is always ready, willing and more than able to help others in need.

By Dana Jackson Q: I’m a follower of “Doc Martin” and miss not seeing any new episodes on PBS. Can you please advise me if this will be renewed? It was a very well-performed series, and the characters were

interesting and well-portrayed. PBS is the only station that represents good television with the finest actors. — E.R. A: I have some good news for you: Season eight episodes of this critically acclaimed British TV series are now airing on public television stations. Why the delay? Apparently, the Acorn TV network had acquired exclusive rights to air “Doc Martin,” which meant that

Federal carbon tax to appear on bills Starting April 1, the Federal Carbon Tax will be applied to all bills received by SaskPower and SaskEnergy customers. This will result in a monthly increase for the average residential customer of about $2 for power and $9 for natural gas for the rest of 2019. “In Prairie Resilience, our government has a Saskatchewan-based solution to lower greenhouse gas emissions without a tax,” Minister Responsible for SaskPower Dustin Duncan said. “SaskPower worked hard to ensure there would be no rate increase this year. The federal government is imposing a carbon tax that will take more than $52 million this year and $546 million through 2022 from SaskPower customers.” “Our government is currently reviewing a request by SaskEnergy to reduce natural gas commodity rates to their lowest level in 20 years, effective April 1,” Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy Bronwyn Eyre said. “These savings would be wiped out by the Federal Liberals’ carbon tax, resulting in higher natural gas bills for homes and businesses. SaskEnergy serves 114,000 more homes and businesses, compared to three decades ago, and yet this larger customer base uses the same amount of natural gas as the smaller customer base did in 1988. This change happened through information, dedication and education — not unnecessary legislation.” Customers will see the tax identified on their bills as a Federal Carbon Tax.

The amount is expected to increase annually to coincide with the multiyear increases established in the federal plan. While the Government of Saskatchewan is challenging the carbon tax in court, it still applies during the legal process. The charge will be applied to SaskPower bills related to electricity produced by power-generating sources like coal and natural gas. This charge will equal an average 2.7 per cent rate increase for 2019, which reflects the estimated additional cost to generate power from these sources. For the average residential customer, it means an increase of $18 over the course of the year, rising to $63 in 2022. On average, individual industrial customers will be paying an additional $164,600 this year, rising to $617,500 in 2022. SaskEnergy customers will be paying about $70 million more the first year because of the Federal Carbon Tax. Customers can expect an additional charge of $1/Gigajoule or about $109 more this year for the average residential customer. There will be additional increases of about $54 per year through 2022. You can find more information at www.saskpower.com/federalcarbontax and www.saskenergy. com/federalcarbontax.

PBS couldn’t any longer. However, the two entities have reached an agreement. New episodes will air first on Acorn, a subscription service that streams primarily British content, and later will be available on PBS stations. While the upcoming ninth — and final — season of “Doc Martin” won’t be filmed until this summer, it will air on Acorn later in 2019 and then subsequently on PBS. For more information on how to view all the shows and miniseries available on Acorn, visit its website at https://Acorn.tv. Q: Has Meghan Markle announced yet whether she and Prince Harry are having a boy or a girl? Also, when is she due? — G.P. A: The former actress

Meghan Markle (“Suits”) turned Duchess of Sussex recently had a baby shower with friends in California, but she has not revealed her baby’s gender. Back in England, she told one little girl who asked that it was a surprise and that even she and Harry don’t know. Their baby is due in late April.

Q: Has Jussie Smollett been fired from his role on “Empire” now that his claims about being attacked in a hate crime are being questioned? Will they recast his character or kill him off? — T.M. A: While daytime soaps recast characters all the time, it’s seldom done in prime time. Smollett, who faces a grand jury soon, is going to have a limited number of scenes on the hit FOX show’s final two episodes of the season, but as of this writing he hasn’t been fired. TMZ reported that five of Smollett’s nine scenes have been cut from the episode that is currently filming, but as for next season, we’ll just have to wait and see what fate awaits his character. to actor Trevor St. John from “One Life to Live”? I thought he was so handsome and such a good actor that he’d be in movies by now. — B.G. A: St. John has worked steadily since he played Todd, and later Victor, on the ABC soap. He has appeared in some movies, including “The Bourne Ultimatum,” but mostly guest-starred on various prime-time shows. He’s now a regular on the CW series “Roswell, New Mexico.” The science fiction drama also stars two other daytime soap graduates: Nathan Parsons (exEthan, “General Hospital”) and Tyler Blackburn (exIan, “Days of Our Lives”). Itching to travel for spring break this year? It’s not just you. Consider the monarch butterfly: It’s common for these beauties to spring into flight through different migration corridors of the country and head north this time of year. To get inspired by the life cycles and travel itineraries of monarchs, kids in Minnesota’s Twin Cities landed at a family event on stark and frozen Lake Harriet to learn and interact at the Monarch Butterfly Migration Shanty

(think ice-fishing house). Wearing decorated helmets, they rode “monarchwinged” bicycles on the ice. Painted to represent butterflies, thick canvas wings were attached to bicycle handles and available to all. “I’m flying like a monarch,” exclaimed 11-year-old Brendan Frost, as he imagined his flight from Mexico to Canada. Inside the shanty, heated by a wood-burning stove and decorated to represent where monarchs overwinter, kids in wool hats and scarves colored paper butterflies and “tagged” and clipped them to firtree sculptures as they learned about pollinators and the migration of these wondrous creatures. Here are three ideas to begin your own monarch adventure:

Attract Monarchs to Your Yard As you plan your summer garden, add milkweed to attract monarchs. Poke a sign in the ground saying, “This is a butterflyfriendly yard” to encourage other neighbors to do the same. Raise Monarch Butterflies Observe firsthand the wonder of how a caterpillar emerges from a chrysalis as a brilliant orange, black and white butterfly. Insectlore.com is a resource many teachers use for ordering caterpillars and supplies. Or, check out books from your library or online about how to find caterpillars and eggs in your own garden habitat this spring.

Take a photo of that monarch that landed in your garden and print it. Or, find images of monarchs and draw your own. Attach the photo or cutout drawing to the front side of a folded sheet of cardstock or heavy construction paper. Inside, write a message to a special friend or relative.

I R G A

“Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.”

• On March 15, 44 BC, Julius Caesar, dictator of Rome, is stabbed to death in the Roman Senate house by 60 conspirators led by Brutus and Cassius, who believed that his death would lead to the restoration of the Roman Republic. • On March 16, 1751, James Madison, author of the Federalist Papers and fourth president of the United States, is born in Virginia. Madison is best remembered for his critical role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where he oversaw the drafting of the final Constitution. • On March 17, 1776, British forces are forced to evacuate Boston following Gen. George Washington’s successful placement of fortifications and cannons on Dorchester Heights. Realizing their position was now indefensible, 11,000 British troops sailed to the safety of Halifax, Nova Scotia. • On March 14, 1919, Max Brand, perhaps the most prolific writer of Western

stories, publishes his first novel, “The Untamed.” Max Brand was one of 21 pen names used by author Frederick Faust. Unlike many Western authors, Faust made no pretense to historical accuracy in his works. • On March 13, 1969, “The Love Bug,” a movie about the adventures of a Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie, opens in theaters. The Walt Disney film, based on the 1961 book “Car, Boy, Girl” by Gordon Buford, spawned four spinoffs. • On March 12, 1972, the last remnants of the First Australian Task Force withdraw from Vietnam. The Australian government had first sent troops to Vietnam in 1964 and by 1969, their forces totaled an estimated 6,600 personnel. • On March 11, 1990, Lithuania becomes the first Soviet republic to proclaim its independence from the USSR. The Soviet government responded by imposing an oil embargo and economic blockade against the Baltic republic, and later sent troops. Lithuania would gain its independence in September 1991.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are an enduring lunchtime favorite. Although Dr. George Washington Carver invented more than 300 uses for the peanut, the invention of peanut butter isn’t on the list of his accomplishments. The first U.S. patents for peanut butter were issued to Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Montreal, Quebec, in 1884 and J.H. Kellogg of Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1897. Edson created his version of peanut butter by milling roasted peanuts between heated surfaces until the peanuts reached “a fluid or semi-fluid state and a consistency like that of butter, lard or oint-

Peanut butter is packed with protein and contains vitamins B-3 and E, magnesium, folate and dietary fiber. It also has high levels of monounsaturated fats and resveratrol, which help to protect against the risk of cardiovascular disease. There have been some concerns about peanut allegeries, especially among schoolchildren, and many schools now have a

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a large property of several acres, and I let our dog “Boomer,” a big Labrador mix, run out there every day for at least an hour. Yesterday he came in panting very rapidly and drooling a bit, and looked agitated. He kept that up for over an hour before settling down. Boomer seems fine today, but what could have caused that rapid breathing? — Dan J., Bloomington, Indiana

DEAR DAN: Even though he’s returned to normal, take Boomer to the veterinarian to be checked out, just to make sure there are no underlying issues. It’s normal for dogs to pant heavily after lots of exertion or on a hot day, but prolonged, heavy panting should catch your attention, especially if it’s accompanied by other behaviors. The causes can be many: On hot days, heat exhaustion or heat stroke are a big concern. A neurological or heart problem could be the silent culprit. Or, Boomer could have gotten into something that’s poisonous to him. Write down all of the symptoms you noticed during his panting episode,

These recipes for Apple Peanut Butter on Cinnamon Raisin Bread and Grilled PB&J Sandwiches are great for breakfast, lunch or as an after-school snack. Changing the type of bread you use for your peanut butter sandwiches adds variety and more nutrients. Some children prefer white bread, and now white whole-grain wheat bread is available. White whole-wheat bread is made with the

If no underlying chronic cause is found, the vet probably will recommend that you keep a watchful eye on Boomer for a few days and make sure he gets plenty of water to drink. I also recommend that you go with him on his next couple of romps to see where he typically roams, looking for plants, chemicals left unattended or anything that he could accidentally ingest.
