“Creed II” (PG-13) — Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) faces off against the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) with the help of his mentor and boxing legend Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). The “Rocky” blueprint is in full effect here, so you won’t be surprised when, say, the fighter comes into the ring too arrogant and loses, or later when a grizzled, tough trainer (in this case, Rocky) breaks the fighter down and rebuilds him in an unforgiving environment (in this case, the desert). What you also should not be surprised to see is attention to detail, themes of honor and commitment to family, and some wonderful character development. Rather than

Julia Roberts, Lucas Hedges in “Ben is Back”. being played-out, it’s wellplayed — a “Rocky IV” for the next generation. “Ben Is Back” (R) — The bonds of a mother and son are tested on Christmas Eve, as Ben (Lucas Hedges) unexpectedly returns from rehab and is given an ironclad rule for remaining: He must stay within the sight of his mother (Julia

Roberts) at all times. As the lure of Ben’s old life tests him time and again, the proximity reveals how

addiction and drug use have distorted, marred and even taken lives in a small town. It is an understandably emotional journey for both, and Roberts and Hedges have done a lovely job of giving insight into the small tensions and big dramatic moments alike. “Instant Family” (PG13) — Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg play Ellie and Pete Wagner, a sweet middle-class couple who, ready to be parents (they think), enter the foster system and come out on the other side as parents of not one but THREE siblings who needed a home. Teenage Lizzy (Isabela Moner) is sarcastic and rebellious; young Juan is

serious and sensitive; and little Lita is a handful. It’s an awkward and heartwarming and painful process of getting to know and trust one another, while dealing with the very real issues of these kids’ traumatic past, all done with love and humor and sincerity. Based on the reallife story of director Sean Anders. “Vox Lux” (R) — Natalie Portman is Celeste, an overblown icon and narcissistic celebrity on a comeback tour while attempting to manage her professional life with a smarmy manager (Jude Law) and her relationship with her daughter (Raffey Cassidy). After surviving a high-school shooting,

Celeste and her sister wrote and performed a tribute song that rocketed Celeste to fame along an alcohol- and drug-fueled path. Is this a statement on the celebrity of tragedy or a cautionary tale of the instant fame of this generation? I’m still not sure. That it came out in the same flow as “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A Star Is Born” certainly dimmed its star. There will be no encore. Red Moon Road wants to tell you a story By Devin Wilger Staff Writer There are few bands with a stage quite like Red Moon Road. The band, consisting of Sheena Rattai, Daniel Jordan and Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner take to the stage with a wide range of instruments, with an estimated 45 different strings – including a banjo, a mandolin, doublenecked lap steel, a guitar where the bottom two strings are the bass. Rattai and Jordan split the drums between them. “It’s a pretty big sound and it’s got a lot of variety, a lot of harmonies, and a big part of our show that people tend to comment on and I think sets us apart is that storytelling is a big part of what we do, both in the songs and between the songs. There’s definitely a through thread of storytelling that each of us share. These stories have informed a lot of the songs,” Jordan said, talking to Yorkton This Week from the road. History is a big part of their storytelling inspiration, whether it’s history of their own families, or history of the world – a song on their most recent album is a tribute to Sophie

Blanchard, a balloonist who was the first woman to be killed in an aviation accident in 1819. “A lot of stories are close to us and literally related. Others you are driving along and you hear about Sophie Blanchard on the radio or something like that, and the stories find you. It’s amazing that when you tell stories people share them with you. Stories kind of beget stories.” Describing his bandmate Péloquin-Hopfner as an “insatiable Kijiji king,” the band’s trademark wide variety of instruments comes from his collector’s instinct, and Jordan jokes, the fact that he’s easily bored. Each new instrument comes with a new sound, that gives the band a new direction to go in when writing songs. That said, there are disadvantages when you have to tour with so many instruments. “We haven’t seen anything behind us for about three weeks now,” Jordan admits. The last album released by the band was back in 2015 with the album Sorrows and Glories, and the band is getting ready for their next album.

Red Moon Road will be in Yorkton on March 22 at the Anne Portnuff Theatre. They are coming as part of the Yorkton Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan series. That album will feature more songs written by the only non-Daniel in the group, as Rattai has taken a leading role in the new material. “She’ll be first to joke that the new stuff has less to do with our grandparents and more to do with her feelings. But that’s kind of underselling it... It’s a new thing for us to move into telling our own stories and talking about our own experiences in

the present, and people seem to relate to it just as much, so that’s an exciting, newer twist while still maintaining that type of stories in the songs that we are known for,” said Jordan. The tour will see the band road testing those songs. While with the last album they ‘went wild’ with the options the studio had to offer and had to learn how to play on the road, with the new one

Best RRSP Rate i n Town Ag Safety Week proclaimed in Sask. The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed March 10-16, as Agricultural Safety Week in Saskatchewan. “Self-care is a vital piece of farm safety,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said. “This week serves as an important reminder to take care of ourselves by getting adequate rest, taking breaks and being aware of dangerous areas where we work. Safety should be top of mind, because at the end of the day we all want to come home safely to our families.” Each y e a r, Saskatchewan’s Agricultural Safety Week is recognized in conjunction with Canadian

Agricultural Safety Week, a partnership between the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, as a way of raising awareness of onfarm safety issues. “Regardless of the injury, safety is the responsibility of everyone,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “We encourage everyone to keep their mind on the task at hand and think about safety in everything that you do.” Canadian Agricultural Safety Week is focused on creating safe and strong farms by empowering farmers, farm families and

they are starting on the live versions. “We have definitely maxed out on what three people can do, but it’s nice to have some limitations. Because live, you are limited to what you can do with our combined 12 limbs and three vocal cords, but in the studio you can go crazy. That can be really fun. I think the difference is that you have constraints put on you live, but from the greatest confines comes the greatest creativity. The new stuff that we are road testing on this tour, I think it’s our best stuff yet, and I’m always really excited when

it comes to that part in the night to pull those out.” The album is expected sometime this year, with many of the songs recorded. The goal right now is to get it right, said Jordan. “It’s so important to roll that out in a thoughtful, intentional manner... There’s also the challenge that every new thing we write tends to be better than the last one, so when do you close the door on that one?” Some bands may be intimidated by a winter tour in Saskatchewan, but Red Moon Road is from Winnipeg, so the winter weather doesn’t intimidate them. Estimating close to a million kilometers on the road in their career, they enjoy hitting every town they arrive in, and believe every place they go is a great place to play. “People everywhere appreciate the arts, and Saskatchewan is really lucky to have something like OSAC, the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils, to bring them to smaller communities. People appreciate that, and we appreciate them having us, and taking a chance on something new.” Red Moon Road will be in Yorkton at the Anne Portnuff Theatre on Mar. 22 as part of the Yorkton Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan Series.

Community Recovery Team established By Devin Wilger Staff Writer Yorkton is one of eight communities in the province to receive a new Community Recovery Team. But what does that mean for the city? Britton Houdek, Saskatchewan Health Authority Interim Manager of the Yorkton Crisis Assessment and Recovery Team, said that the team is a composition of different professionals who provide high intensity mental health and addictions services to those who have significant mental illness. The main difference with having this team available is how they respond to the client’s needs. “We follow a model that allows us to be

flexible with the client’s needs. We work non-traditional hours, whether that be evenings or weekends, and really provide the client care in their home or in their community where it’s more meaningful to them.” The team is made up of a team leader, a social worker, two occupational therapists, an addictions councillor and four community mental health nurses. “To have a multi-disciplinary team is so valuable for patients. It allows for increased communication between professionals, it allows for different lenses to be used to examine and collaborate with the client on what their needs are. It helps ensure the safety of patients is respected. It really is the best way to provide care for patients,” Houdek said.

son due to circumstances beyond our control, but there is more planned and we will let u know when as soon as we know from @ AETV.” This led many to speculate that the A&E Network was caving to pressure from the Scientology organization. For those who don’t know, Leah Remini is an actress (“King of Queens”) and former Scientologist who has coproduced and hosted several documentary series calling into question the religion’s practices. The docu-series features onscreen testimonials of former Scientology leaders and followers, and has cast an unfavorable light on the group, which has

By Dana Jackson Q: Where is Leah Remini’s great series on Scientology? It hasn’t been on in the past few weeks. Will it ever return? — J.R. A: You’re not the only one who has been asking. On Feb. 19, Remini reposted a message on Twitter from fellow producer Mike Rinder stating that there would be no episode of “Scientology: The Aftermath” that evening. He further wrote: “This has been a shortened sea-

The goal of the team is to use that flexibility to better meet the client’s needs overall, and more importantly, get rid of barriers that might exist in a traditional, clinic-based model, Houdek explained. “Coming into a hospital or a clinical setting really limits patients. When we are able to be in their homes, when we have the flexibility to work in tandem with other professionals, we can do assessments, we can do treatment that is through multi-disciplinary lens so that the patient receives the right care at the right time from the right professionals. We’re removing some of the barriers to access.” The other issue with a clinic is not always a comfortable environment for clients, which can cause them to put up their own barriers, which makes treat-

ment more difficult. “Clients feel cautious about coming into a clinic or coming into a hospital, as opposed to that sense of safety that home environment,” Houdek said. As the team evolves, they hope to be able to use this model, with Yorkton as a base, in surrounding rural areas as well, as Houdek acknowledges that the city does service a wide range of people in the surrounding area who may also need the support of the team. Houdek said that the development of the team has been exciting for the region, as they look at improving the services they currently offer as well as filling some of the gaps that are currently in the community.

Scientology. Everything you do gives us content.” If it doesn’t come back on soon, I would keep checking the network’s website, www.aetv.com. It still has full episodes that have already aired, so that’s a good sign, and hopefully it will have some information soon about when the series will resume. If you’re curious about any rebuttals by the church, there’s a section on the A&E website called “Aftermath Letters,” which has correspondence from Scientology representatives. A: Cooper isn’t married, but his significant other and mother of his daughter, model Irina Shayk, was right there in the audience cheering them. If she’s bothered by it, she hasn’t shown it. In fact, she was sitting in the audience next to Ms. Gaga, Cooper’s co-star in “A Star Is Born.” One woman who might not have been amused by the performance is Cooper’s ex-wife, actress Jennifer Esposito (“NCIS”). She responded on Instagram to speculation about a romance between the two with, simply, “Ha.”

A: Smits, probably best known for his star-making role as Victor Sifuentes on “L.A. Law,” has been acting steadily for years now. He was a regular on “NYPD Blue,” “Dexter” and “Sons of Anarchy,” and has just been cast in the pilot for a new legal drama, “Bluff City Law,” which is set in Memphis and focuses on civil-rights cases. Hopefully we’ll see Smits marching into the courtroom, briefcase in hand, this fall on NBC. Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com!

Tip: Baking Powder Baking powder is a combination of baking soda and a dry acid, such as cream of tartar. Most commercial baking powders are double-acting: They start to produce gas bubbles as soon as they are moistened, than release more when heated in the oven. Baking powder can stay potent for up to six months if stored airtight in a cool dry place. Inactive baking powder has been the cause of many a baking failure. To test it, stir 1/2 teaspoon baking powder into 1/4 cup warm water; if it bubbles, it’s ready for action. Excerpted from “The All New Good Housekeeping Cookbook.”

Anglers reminded of March deadline to remove ice fishing shelters With ice fishing season winding down, anglers are reminded that all fishing shelters south of Highway 16 must be removed by March 15, and shelters in areas north of Highway 16 must be removed by March 31. If shelters are not removed, owners may be prosecuted, and the structure and contents may be moved off the ice and confiscated. Every year, ice fishing shelters are abandoned on the ice, which can later pose a danger to boaters, water-skiers and others enjoying our lakes. Pieces can also wash up on shore and cause environmental hazards. Litter must also be removed when ice shelters are taken off the ice. Structures must be moved to a location where they can be loaded and transported to the individual’s residence or property. Ice fishing shelters must have the owner’s complete

name, address and phone number on the outside in legible letters that are at least 2.5 cm high. Anyone travelling on the ice should take extreme caution. Slush indicates that ice is eroding from above and below at an advanced rate. Changing temperatures can cause thermal cracks and pressure ridges, which are indicators of unsafe conditions. Information about fishing in the province can be found in the Saskatchewan Anglers’ Guide and online at www.saskatchwan.ca/fishing. If you suspect wildlife, fishery, forestry or environmental violations, call your local Ministry of Environment office, Saskatchewan’s toll-free TIP line at 1-800-667-7561, call #5555 for SaskTel cellular subscribers, or report a violation on line at www.saskatchewan.ca/ tip. You may be eligible for cash rewards from the SaskTip reward program.

HOLLYWOOD — Amazon Prime is going the jugular vein of Netflix, which has wooed viewers from the major networks and had a field day cornering the film and TV markets unchallenged. But here comes Amazon Prime with a one-two punch, first by wooing Al Pacino to top-line the 10-part series “The Hunt” and also recruiting threetime Oscar-nominee (for “Get-Out”) Jordan Peele (who produced, directed and wrote the 2017 hor-

ror film and won for his original screenplay) to direct. The series also stars Logan Lerman, “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Jerrika Hinton, Lena Olin, Carol Kane and Saul Rubinek. It follows a diverse band of Nazi hunters as they attempt to bring highranking Nazi officials, living amongst us, to justice (no release date yet). The second punch comes from “Good Omens,” featuring the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch as Satan and “Three Billboards” Oscar-winner Frances McDormand as God. The series has a sixepisode green light and stars live actors Michael Sheen, former “Doctor

If you’ve been timid about preparing fish, try the steaming method. Cooking “en papillote” — meaning “in paper” in French — is a method in which you seal the food in a pouch and bake it. The food essentially steams in the oven in its own juices. Eating fish is an excellent way to add a low-fat, good-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, minerals and vitamins to your diet. Two servings of fish per week will greatly benefit your health. The high amounts of protein in fish also aid in the regulation of blood sugar for those with diabetes. DEAR DR. ROACH: I drink a lot of coffee, about 80 ounces per day. I feel no ill effects and have no stomach discomfort, but my wife says water is better. A kidney specialist basically said, “fluid is fluid” and that as long as I am hydrated, coffee is fine. With studies showing that coffee has antioxidants and reduces certain cancers, what should I do? — M.K. ANSWER: People with long memories may recall that in the early 1980s, coffee was linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, the study has become a textbook example of poor design, and further studies have suggested that coffee drinking may be associated with lower risk of breast, prostate and oral cancers. I wouldn’t

159,900

recommend drinking coffee just for this reason, as the effect size, if it really exists, is pretty small. As far as hydration goes, your kidney specialist is completely right. The caffeine in regular coffee is perceived as a diuretic (a substance that makes you urinate excessively), but that turns out to be myth as well, at least in regular coffee drinkers. One potential ill effect of caffeine is that it minimally decreases calcium absorption. However, this amounts to the equivalent of calcium in a tablespoon or two of milk, so it is unlikely to affect overall calcium balance significantly. Eighty ounces of coffee is a lot of caffeine, and some people will get jittery or have sleep disturbances. It also can have variable effects on gut motility (that’s a delicate way of saying that it commonly causes diarrhea, but it also can cause constipation). All that said, if you aren’t having any ill effects from drinking so much coffee, coffee is fine — though I still think that, as your wife says, water is better for many people.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 64-year-old male. I had a stroke and lost vision in my right eye in 2005. I am right-handed. I had very high blood pressure at the time, and it’s now under control with drugs. Since then, I can no longer wear polarized sunglasses. I have light-sensitive eyes, but most over-the-counter sunglasses are polarized. My ophthalmologist and other eye specialists tell me they’ve never heard of my problem occurring. With polarized glasses on, I see in 3-D. Blue lines in the roadway and sewer lids or any metal covering appear to be 3-D to me. I have to be careful stepping over the handicap space lines because they look like curbs. Have you ever heard of this, or am I unique? If I can locate nonpolarized lenses, then I have no problem. Thank you. — J.O. ANSWER: While every-

one is unique, this is a condition I have heard of before. In fact, I know people who deliberately watch television with one eye in order to enhance the 3-D effects. Polarized light does tend to accentuate lines and edges, so it doesn’t surprise me that with your one working eye you have an accentuated 3-D sensation — your brain has learned to use cues that people with two working eyes might miss. In your case, the brain has interpreted things so strongly that you are having some optical illusions. Sadly, I don’t have any practical advice beyond finding nonpolarized lenses. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

Put stuff on a stick, and kids are bound to like it. Think ice cream, candy and colorful pinwheels. So why not chores on a stick? “Call it a gimmick, but if it works, I say go for it,” says my friend Lisa, a busy single working mom of a 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. She was definitely determined to entice the kids to get into the chore thing without the whining and the alltoo-frequent response of “It’s not mine, so why do I have to pick it up?” Sound familiar? Her “chores on a stick” germinated out of an idea at an early-childhood class she attended in her community. Write up little jobs that need to be done on one end of a wooden craft stick, decorate the other end with cut-out paper flower blooms and stand them upright in tin can to look like a bouquet. When it’s time to get the blooming chores done around the house, say to the kids, “Pick a stick!” Whatever is written on the stick becomes the child’s responsibility. Since kids generally get overwhelmed with a huge chore like “clean up your room”, Lisa has been mindful to break up big jobs into smaller tasks. The can of chores labeled “BEDROOM” has several sticks with specific things printed on each one that are to be completed over a period of a few days, one stick at a time. For example, sticks may say: “Put away dolls on the shelf,”

But be careful that you don’t take too many bows, or you might see gratitude replaced with resentment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What seems to be an ideal investment should be checked out thoroughly before you snap at the offer and find yourself hooked by an expensive scam. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is matched by your generosity. You are a person who people know they can rely on.

Dreams start here. “Put shoes and boots in the closet,” “Put toys in bins.” Other cans might be labeled, “PLAYROOM” or “BACKYARD” with specific chores on each stick. Pick up some craft sticks, decorate them if you wish, label with chores, toss them in a recycled soup can and try out this strategy in your home. “Pick a Stick” is like a game, so your young kids will no doubt like the novelty of it at first, but even more, they’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as they do their part to keep the home organized and humming this fall. Grandparent Tip: When the grandkids come for a visit this spring, fill a can with craft sticks with something to do together outdoors such as “Visit the playground at the local park,” “See the ducks at the pond” or “Walk to the library,” and enjoy doing the chosen activity together. APAS offers members disability insurance Saskatchewan farmers are three-times more likely to lose time due to injuries compared to any other industry in the province: 2017 WCB data APAS has announced that it is partnering with The Co-operators and The Edge Benefits to offer APAS members income protection and business overhead expense coverage in the event of an injury. “Even though we

encourage producers to take every safety precaution, accidents do still happen, and we want to make sure that our members are protected,” says Todd Lewis, APAS president. The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association calls farming a ‘dangerous occupation’ and estimates that agriculture is the fourth most hazardous industry in Canada. “People typically think

of insurance as a way of protecting their physical assets like equipment,” says Scott Moffatt, Chief Business Development Officer of The Edge Benefits, “but don’t always consider insuring their most important asset – the people, or in this case, themselves and their farm hands.” APAS members now have exclusive access to a Basic Disability Package that is completely cus-

tomizable to their needs and costs as little as $2/ day. APAS members also have the option to add Business Overhead Coverage for Injuries at a special rate. This extra protection provides monthly reimbursement for fixed operating expenses such as lease payments, interest on debt, utilities, equipment rental, employee salaries, and more – including the ability to hire a

replacement farmer – to ensure the farm continues to thrive during unexpected absences. “Every year there’s a story about a farmer who gets injured and his neighbours rally together to help,” says Jamie Bohach, Director of Member and Key Client Relations for The Co-operators. “While farmers are part of a strong network, not everyone has the same

access to the network and every farmer should consider alternatives to keep their farm operation going in the event of an accident or injury.” For more information and to purchase coverage, APAS members can contact The Edge Benefits at 1-877-531-EDGE (3343) or apas@edgebenefits.com, or reach out to a local Co-operators Financial Advisor.

CHEESY TUNA PIE Whether you’re reaching for a can of tuna for Lent or because it’s just an economical staple, this dish will make you think you should have tuna more often. •1 cup shredded Kraft 2 Percent Milk cheddar cheese •1 cup frozen peas, thawed •1 (6-ounce) can white tuna, packed in water, drained and flaked

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column about the man who needed to put his severely overweight cat on a diet. While you wrote that it’s important to feed them about 40 calories less per day than normal — that way the cat won’t feel like it’s starving — you didn’t say that owners need to weigh their pet regularly during the diet and adjust their food amounts so that they keep losing weight steadily and don’t plateau. — Kim in

•1 (2-ounce) jar sliced pimiento, drained •3/4 cup Bisquick Heart Smart baking mix •1/2 cup fat-free milk •1/2 cup fat-free half & half •2 tablespoons non-fat sour cream •3 eggs or equivalent in egg substitute •2 tablespoons dried onion flakes •1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes •1/8 teaspoon black pepper Heat oven to 400 F. Spray a 9-inch pie plate with butter-flavored cooking spray. In medium bowl, combine cheddar cheese, peas, tuna and pimiento. Evenly spread mixture into prepared pie plate. In Oyster Bay, New York DEAR KIM: That’s right, and thank you for mentioning it! As your pet slims down, it will plateau — reaching a point where the amount of calories it’s eating each day maintains its weight. Weighing your cat regularly — once a week if possible — will help you keep track of whether it’s losing weight, and how quickly. Again, cats should consume about 24 to 35 calories per pound, per day. Some vets recommend a little less, about 20 calories per pound. For example, a 12-pound cat needs 240 to 288 calories per day (based on 20 to 24 calories per pound). If the cat needs to

same bowl, combine baking mix, milk, half & half, sour cream and eggs. Mix well using a wire whisk. Stir in onion and parsley flakes, and black pepper. Carefully pour batter over tuna mixture. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Place pie plate on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Divide into 6 wedges. HINT: Thaw peas by rinsing in a colander under hot water for one minute. • Each serving equals: 220 calories, 8g fat, 17g protein, 20g carbs, 505mg sodium, 228mg calcium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Meat, 1 Starch; Carb Choices: 1. lose, say, 4 pounds, gradually feed it less — knock off about 30-40 calories per day to start. Every cat’s metabolism is different, so weighing regularly will help you to make adjustments to their diet. To figure out how much food to give your pet, look on the back of the container for the serving size — it’s in ounces or grams, with calories per serving in the nutrition data below that. Also, invest in a digital kitchen scale and weigh your pets’ food at every feeding so you know precisely how much they’re getting. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Did you know? Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is often mistaken as something that only affects aging men and women. While the Alzheimer’s Association® notes that age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the group also warns that even men and women nowhere close to retirement age can develop the disease. In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, many people with early-onset are in their 40s and 50s. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s is not just for retirees but capable of affecting younger men and women with families and careers is important, as the Alzheimer’s Association points out that healthcare providers typically do not look for signs or symptoms of Alzheimer’s in young people. In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

Soup and sandwich ideal lunch combo Few things are better together than hot soup and a favorite sandwich for lunch or a light dinner. This combination is the ideal comfort food, and the variations are as endless as a person’s imagination. Thanks to two recipes from “What’s Cooking Italian” (Thunder Bay Press) by Penny Stephens, home chefs can put an Italian spin on the soupsandwich pairing with “Mozzarella Sandwiches” and “Creamy Tomato Soup.” Mozzarella Sandwiches Serves 4 •8 slices day-old bread, crusts removed •3-1⁄2 ounces mozzarella cheese, thickly sliced

•8 canned anchovy fillets, drained and chopped •16 fresh basil leaves •1⁄2 cup pitted black olives, chopped •4 eggs, beaten •2⁄3 cup milk •Oil for deep-frying •Salt and pepper

for 5 minutes.

Cut each slice of bread into two triangles. Top eight of the bread triangles with the mozzarella slices and chopped anchovies. Place the basil leaves and olives on top and season with salt and pepper to taste. Lay the other eight triangles of bread over the top and press down around the edges to seal. Mix the eggs and milk and pour into an ovenproof dish. Add the sandwiches and leave to soak

Carefully place the sandwiches in the oil and deep-fry for 2 minutes or until golden, turning once. Remove the sandwiches with a slotted spoon and drain on absorbent paper towels. Serve immediately while still hot.

Heat the oil in a large pan until a cube of bread browns in 30 seconds — the oil will then be hot enough for deep-frying. Before cooking the sandwiches, squeeze the edges together again.

Creamy Tomato Soup Serves 4 •3 tablespoons butter •1 pound, 9 ounces ripe tomatoes, preferably plum, roughly chopped

•3-3⁄4 cups hot vegetable stock •2⁄3 cup milk or light cream •1⁄4 cup ground almonds •1 teaspoon sugar •2 tablespoons shredded basil leaves •Salt and pepper

Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes, until the skins start to wrinkle. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the stock to the pan, bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, under a preheated broiler, lightly toast the ground almonds until they are golden brown. This will only take 1-2 minutes, so watch them closely. Remove the soup from the heat and place in a food processor. Blend the mixture to form a smooth consistency. Alternatively, mash the soup with a potato masher. Press the soup through a strainer to remove any tomato skin or seeds. Place the soup in the pan and return to the heat. Stir in the milk or cream, ground almonds and sugar. Warm the soup through, and add the shredded basil just before serving. Transfer the soup to warm bowls and serve hot.

Start the day with nutritious cherries George Washington might have known a thing or two when he tried to cut down a cherry tree. The first president of the United States of America may have been trying to get at the sweet and versatile fruit hanging from the tree’s branches. Cherries are nutritional powerhouses that contain antioxidants, which studies have suggested can reduce the risk of heart disease. In addition, anthocyanins in cherries may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, cherries are a natural source of melatonin, which pro-

There are many reasons to eat cherries each day, so why not start at the breakfast table? This recipe for “Croissant French Toast with Fresh Bing Cherry Sauce,” courtesy of the California Cherry Board, makes for a delicious and nutritious start to your day. •3 eggs •1⁄2 cup milk •1⁄4 cup heavy cream •1 tablespoon vegetable oil •2 cups fresh whipped cream •1⁄2 cup chocolate sauce Heat orange marmalade in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.

Add the cherries and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from the flame. Slice the croissants in half lengthwise, as if to make a sandwich. Whisk eggs, milk, and cream together in a flat-bottomed baking dish. Lay the croissant pieces in the egg mixture, turning several times as the liquid is absorbed.

Add the oil to griddle and heat on medium flame. Cook the croissant slices until golden brown on each side. Place the bottom croissant slices on serving plates. Top with 1⁄2 cup cherry mixture. Top with the croissant tops, then add a dollop of whipped cream and finish with a pour of chocolate sauce.

Many factors contribute to wrinkles Getting older brings about many physical and emotional changes. Wrinkles are one such physical change that is widely associated with aging. Some people begin fighting wrinkling long before their first wrinkle even appears. A poll of 2,000 women conducted by DermStore found that around 30 percent of women under 35 regularly use anti-wrinkle products. The average millennial user starts at age 26 com-

pared to the average currently 55-year-old woman, who began using wrinklereduction products at around age 47. As skin ages, its natural tendency is to become less elastic. However, other factors also contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Understanding the main culprits behind wrinkles can help people combat them more effectively. • Exposure to UV light: The Mayo Clinic says that ultraviolet radiation

speeds up the natural aging process and is the primary cause of early wrinkling. UV from the sun can break down the supportive connective tissue in the skin, which includes collagen and elastin fibers. Using sunscreen and staying out of the sun as much as possible can help. • Exposure to pollution: Pollution can cause free radical damage that contributes to wrinkling, advises Maral Skelsey, M.D., director of the Dermatologic Surgery

Center of Washington. Other data indicates those who live in urban settings have more wrinkles and age spots than those who live in rural areas. Washing off skin contaminants from the air each day may be beneficial. • Smoking: The contaminants in cigarette smoke can damage the skin, promoting wrinkles, states the skincare company Nivea. Also, dragging on a cigarette purses the lips and can form deep wrinkles

Myth #1: Canned foods are not as healthy as fresh foods. Fresh foods, once harvested, have a finite shelf life. Plus, once fruit or vegetables are picked, their vitamin and mineral content decreases each day that they are not consumed. Many canned foods are picked and processed on the same day, helping to retain nutrients at their peak and lock them in for many months. Also, according to the Hy-Vee supermarket chain, sometimes canned foods are packed with additional nutrients, such as increased lycopene in canned tomatoes. Myth #2: Canned foods are full of preservatives. The perception that canned foods are “processed” foods often leads people to believe they’re full of unsavory ingredients. The term processing is used to describe any food that has been changed from its natural form. So removing corn from a cob counts as processing, as is baking or boiling potatoes. Canned foods are preserved by heating the items and sealing them

under pressure. No other preservatives are needed to keep them fresh. Myth #3: Can linings are dangerous. There has been controversy concerning BPA-containing plastics for many years. Even though the Food and Drug Administration, as well as other international food safety agencies, has evaluated the extensive body of science and continue to affirm BPA’s safety in food packaging, some manufacturers are voluntarily moving away from it. Consumers can find many foods packed in cans with non-BPA linings. However, even foods packaged in BPA are considered safe for consumption. Myth #4: Canned foods are full of sodium. Some canned foods will contain salt as an added ingredient to improve taste and act as a freshness preservative. But canned foods do not rank among the biggest offenders in regard to excessive amounts of sodium. In 2012,

include collagen and elastin. By binding to these building blocks of the skin, sugar weakens collagen and elastin and will lead to an appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Stress can increase cortisol levels that affect the skin’s ability to stay hydrated and elastic. Avoiding wrinkle triggers and following a dermatologist’s advice on skincare products and care can help people stave off wrinkles.

Canned food myths debunked The affordability of canned foods entices many people to stock up on the essentials. However, there are some people who still harbor concerns about the safety of canned foods. Getting to the truth about canned foods can assuage some of those concerns and help those on the fence stock up on these budget-friendly staples.

around this area of the face. • Poor diet and stress: Stress and eating unhealthy foods, such as a diet high in sugar, may contribute to premature aging of the skin. According to Kristina Goldenberg, MD, board-certified dermatologist of Goldenberg Dermatology, after sugar is ingested it goes through a process called glycation, which involves binding to different proteins in the body. These proteins

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study that identified the top 10 food categories that contribute to high sodium diets. Pizza, cured meats, cold cuts, and rolls made the list, while canned foods did not. Myth #5: Canned foods do not taste good. Because foods are canned when they are at peak freshness and ripeness after harvest, they retain full flavor if properly stored.

Myth #6: All dented cans are unsafe. Cans can become dented in transit. Drop a can and it will dent. But that doesn’t necessarily mean foods inside dented cans are unsafe to eat. If a can is bulging or if the top or bottom of the can moves or makes a popping sound, the seal has probably been broken or compromised by bacteria and should be thrown out. Canned foods are safe and can make for valuable additions to any pantry.

Coping with age related hair loss Attitude goes a long way in regard to self-esteem. With a positive spin, it’s possible to get through difficult situations and even have a favorable outlook on getting older. But even the most optimistic among us may at times worry about the physical signs of aging and wonder what can be done to make them feel and look their best. Wrinkles and a little extra weight around the middle certainly garner attention, but hair loss

is another age-related concern. As people age, their hair changes in several ways. Graying through loss of melanin pigment is the most apparent. MedlinePlus, the health information resource from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, says that strands of hair also can become less dense and smaller through the years. Many follicles also may stop producing new hairs. Regardless of age, it is customary for a person

to lose about 100 hairs a day. If those hairs are not replaced as readily as they once were, patches of thinning and balding hair may appear. The rate at which hair falls out is largely determined by genetics, according to Headcovers Unlimited, a company that produces wigs, scarves and other headwraps. But nearly everyone will experience some sort of age-related hair loss. Hormonal changes dur-

ing menopause can cause noticeable thinning and scalp exposure that may be mistaken for actual hair loss. There are many ways to mitigate hair loss. Here are some handy tips. • Try a new cut. Work with your stylist to determine a haircut that can suggest the appearance of thickness and camouflage the loss of density or bare spots. Graduated layers kept close to the

face can help, as can pixie cuts. Men can choose to go entirely bald and bold. • Treat hair gently. Avoid harsh chemical processes and constant heat styling. Protect fragile hair from damage by pampering it. • Look for thickening formulas. Many shampoos, serums and conditioners tout volumizing or thickening properties. These can help plump up hair and make thinning less appar-

ent. • Talk to your doctor. Hair loss may be a result of medication, a skin condition or aging. Doctors may suggest products, such as Minoxidil and Lipogaine formulas, that can be used on the scalp to reduce hair loss and help follicles produce new hair strands. Hair thinning and hair loss can be a symptom of getting older. Knowledge is key to improve hair’s appearance at any age.

Strategies to control appetite Hunger can be a formidable foe, especially for people attempting to lose weight. When hunger strikes, various appetitecontrol strategies can help people avoid overeating or eating during those times when boredom is more to blame than an empty belly. • Eat slowly. When a person eats, a series of signals are sent to the brain from digestive hormones secreted by the gastrointestinal tract. These signals produce a feeling of pleasure and satiety in the brain, but it can take awhile for the brain to receive them. By chewing slowly, people can give the signals more time to reach their brains, potentially preventing them from overeating. • Choose the right snacks. The right snacks can make it easier to eat more slowly. Instead of reaching for potato chips or pretzels, both of which can be eaten quickly and picked up by the handful, choose snacks that are both healthy and require a little work. Carrots dipped in hummus or baked tortilla chips with low-fat salsa or bean dip are low-calorie snacks that also require some work between bites. The time it takes to dip

between bites affords more time for the digestive tract to release signals to the brain that you’re full. • Reach for fiber first. Another way to conquer hunger without overeating is to reach for fiber before eating other parts of your meal. Vegetables are rich in fiber, but since veggies are often served as side dishes, many people tend to eat them only after they’ve eaten their main courses. That can contribute to overeating. Fiber fills you up, so by eating the high-fiber portions of your meal first, you’re less likely to overeat before your brain receives the signals that your stomach is full. Consider eating vegetables as an appetizer or, if the entire meal is served at once, clear your plate of vegetables before diving into the main course or other side dishes. • Drink water. Perhaps the best, and least expensive, way to control appetite and ensure you don’t overeat is to drink more water. A 2010 study funded by the Institute for Public Health and Water Research that included 48 adults between the ages of 55 and 75 found that people who drank two eight-ounce

• Worried about pesticides in your diet? Try mangos, one of the fruits least likely to have pesticide residues. • It can be a snap to remove burned-on food from the bottom of a pot or a frying pan. All you have to do is sprinkle in some baking soda and add hot water. Let the mixture sit overnight. In the morning, add a dash more baking soda and scrub the residue away. • Got dirty floors? Make sure you aren’t throwing good effort into a dirty mop. You need a second bucket filled with rinse water, then follow this pattern: Clean mop in water with cleaner, mop a section of floor, rinse mop in plain water, go back over that section, rinse mop again. Repeat. • “I like strong tea

with no milk. My husband drinks black coffee. The coffeemaker and our mugs get stained over time. About monthly, I ‘brew’ a pot of hot water, but I put a dishwasher ‘pac’ in the carafe. The hot water dissolves the cleaner, making the coffee carafe easy to clean. Then I use the detergent water to clean all the mugs. It works like magic.” — T.L. in Missouri • In time for tax season: Don’t overlook the value of opening and contributing to an individual retirement account to reduce your tax bill. Contributions need not always be made by Dec. 31 to count; it’s possible to open an account as late as tax-filing day on April 15, and it can still count against your 2018 taxes. • To check for toilet leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If, without flushing, you see the bowl water start to change color, you know you have a leak. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

glasses of water right before a meal consumed 75 to 90 fewer calories during the ensuing meal than study participants who did not consume water prior to their meals. Over the course of 12 weeks, participants who drank water before meals three times per day lost roughly five pounds more than those who did not increase their water intake. Controlling appetite does not have to be a complex undertaking. In fact, some of the simplest strategies can be highly effective.
