By Dana Jackson Q: I was so sad to hear about Luke Perry’s death. I watched “Beverly Hills 90210” every week with my roommates, and he was our favorite. I know he’s on “Riverdale,” but is there anything else he filmed before his passing? — J.L. A: Luke Perry’s untimely death at age 52 from a stroke was quite shocking. He was engaged to be married and was in the midst of a career resurgence playing, a father on The
CW hit series “Riverdale.” His only posthumous project is a big one, a role in the Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” due out this summer. Also starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, it’s set in 1969 when actress Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson Family. Former “Celebrity Extra” columnist Cindy Elavsky interviewed Perry three times. During one conversation, she told him how much she loved this simple but profound line his character said in the “Goodnight for Justice” TV movies: “Every man is ordinary until he does
are simple. I’ve always been a fan of the simple things. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be that simple, right there, just a thought that sticks in your mind. You’ve got to do something extraordinary at some point in your life.”

Q: Where have I seen the female lead in the new show “Whiskey Cavalier”? I haven’t watched an episode — I can’t get past the ridiculous title — but I’ve seen several commercials for it and she looks so familiar. — G.R. A: “Whiskey Cavalier” is a new series on ABC about an FBI agent and CIA operative who are opposites — making for
several funny moments and laying the groundwork for a future romance. Scott Foley plays Will Chase, but his call sign as an agent is Whiskey Cavalier. Reportedly, the show was written to focus mainly on Foley’s character, so that’s why it’s named after him. However, producer Bill Lawrence recently tweeted that when they cast Lauren Cohan as Frankie Trowbridge (who has a unique call sign of her own, Fiery Tribute), they already had a title, but then she was so good, they expanded her role. The most likely place you’ve seen Cohen is in the hit series “Walking Dead,”
where she played Maggie since 2011. Q: Is this the last season for “Law & Order: SVU”? Has it been on longer than the original “Law & Order”? — D.S. A: The “SVU” spinoff is celebrating its 20th season, which puts it in a three-way tie with the original “Law & Order” and “Gunsmoke” as the longest running primetime dramas ever. Word is it will likely be renewed for one more year followed by the launch of a new franchise, “Law & Order: Hate Crimes.” Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@ gmail.com!
Final phase of expansion under way manager Terry Tyson told Yorkton This Week.
By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Construction is ongoing on the final phase of a major expansion at Grain Millers north of Yorkton. “This is the culmination (of an expansion) that dates back over three years,” facility general

Tyson said the overall facility has been gearing up to add production capacity with a sort of phased in expansion that started with an upgrade to its grain receiving areas, and has included adding additional storage capacity, including in the ‘work in progress’ area which allows for product to be temporarily held at any point in the process from cleaning, through hull removal, to kilning, cutting and processing into groats, flour or flakes. The final step in the overall expansion is currently under construction, adding final milling capacity. The work, which has faced some weather-relat-
ed issues this winter is still hoped to be complete and in operation this fall, said Tyson. “Oct. 1, is still our target date,” he said. The new addition will nearly double production at the plant. As Grain Millers in Yorkton currently operates they produce 100,000 metric tonnes of processed product annually, said Tyson. The completed expansion will increase production to 180,000 metric tonnes annually, or an increase in capacity of 80 per cent. “It will be our (Grain Millers) biggest (oat processing plant),” said Tyson “Iowa has been the biggest but this will be.”

With the increased capacity the facility will also need more staff, “about 30 more people,” said Tyson, adding “a few of which we have already hired.” The expanded plant will require about 280,000 metric tonnes of oats, most of likely still accessed in the local region.

“To-date our catchment area has been about 120 miles,” said Tyson, adding while Grain Millers does not get every bushel of oats grown in that area by far “… we think it will need to get a little bigger (the collection area).” That said, Tyson said the reason for the expan-
sion here is the availability of oats. “This is where the oats are,” he said. The three-year expansion will see a final investment of about $100 million, said Tyson. Grain Millers bought the original milling facility in 2001.

A first hand look at trade with Peru By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer
possible solutions. Being active in getting the message of farming out has created opportunities for the third-year university student including being part of a recent youth delegation to visit Peru to talk agriculture, and other Canadian export sectors. “Why I love agriculture the most, it’s a chance to put Canadian agriculture products on a global stage,” she said at the Rural Roots Ag Day held at the Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum Friday. Kitzan was one of 10 youth delegates taking part in the Global Ag Vision trip. She said the program is designed specifically to allow young Canadians to “put Canada on a global
Kaitlyn Kitzan grew up on a farm near Theodore, where she learned to appreciate the industry of agriculture. Following graduation from high school Kitzan headed to the University of Saskatchewan to study agriculture and bioresources because she said she “really wanted to be a solution” in terms of some of the challenges the industry is and will be facing. In addition to her studies Kitzan has been active is promoting the idea of finding solutions, including taking part in hackathon, where a problem is given and teams have a set amount of time to offer
stage.” Among the 10 students Kitzan was the only one who was raised on a farm. To be part of the program participants had to find industry sponsors which they then had a mandate to promote in Peru. Kitzan’s primary supporter came from the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association and Sask Wheat. She said being focused on wheat in Peru was timely as that country “is looking at new regulations on Canadian wheat … Most of my conversations in Peru was on Canadian wheat.” While in Peru, Kitzan and the group met with representatives of the Peru government, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce there, and with
Kaitlyn Kitzan universities doing work in the sector. The issue for Peru is the amount of weed seeds they find in wheat imported from Canada, said Kitzan, adding they are not treating American wheat in the same way. As a result, Kitzan said Canada is focusing a lot of effort in promoting the
idea that Canadian wheat is clean and of consistent quality. Wheat is Canada’s largest export to Peru, with gold the key commodity coming back, said Kitzan. She added Peru is looking to diversify its exports into more agricultural goods, such as green and white asparagus. Agriculture is Peru’s “second largest economic driver,” noted Kitzan, behind only mining. She added, “60 per cent of farms are small scale.” Kitzan said there are also opportunities to increase agricultural exports to Peru from Canada, in particular in the area of pulse crops because of low tariffs, for frozen pork and beef, and for bovine and poultry genetics. In general, goods flow between Canada and Peru
relatively smoothly. The two countries have had a free trade agreement in place for the last decade. Peru has a rather diverse nation, a dry, desert like strip along the coast, the mountainous region of the Andes range, and then an area of the Amazon jungle. The mountains do allow for the growing of coffee, which is another major export. Since there is an effort to increase agriculture an issue is “burning the Amazon jungle to increase agricultural land,” said Kitzan. While only in Peru a short time, Kitzan said she did see opportunities for greater trade between the two nations, but exchanges for students and information which could lead to greater connections down the road.

Saskatchewan Innovators challenged While delivering the Premier’s address at the 2019 Convention of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, Premier Scott Moe announced an Innovation Challenge to find creative solutions in connecting would-be land users with rural private property owners to access land. The Innovation Challenge stems from proposed changes to The Trespass to Property Act, which would require people to get permission from rural property owners to use their land for hunting, and other recreational activities. Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), with support from Innovation Saskatchewan, is leading the challenge and asking Saskatchewan
technology startups, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students to find technology solutions to the following question: “How can technology be used as a tool to obtain permission from rural property owners before accessing their land?” The ideal solution should create a convenient way for communication to occur between those seeking permission to access land and the landowners. “Saskatchewan has a long history of innovation and entrepreneurial achievement, and right now the technology sector in our province thriving,” Moe said. “We think there’s an opportunity to continue apply our Saskatchewan innovation when it comes to rural property access. We’re calling on our vibrant tech sector to bring

During the late 1960s and ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, thinking it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-
hitter. When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an anti-drug program in California.
ideas forward on how we can make it easier to ask for permission to access private land, and easier for property owners to respond to those requests. With the strong leadership and commitment of SARM, we’re hopeful our innovators and entrepreneurs will answer the call.” “Providing the public a tool to assist with receiving permission from rural property owners is important,” Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities President Ray Orb said. “SARM hopes this initiative will assist in finding an innova-
tive solution.” Prior to the April 30 deadline for applications, there will be information sessions held in Regina, Saskatoon and online. Application forms and further details on the program are available at www.innovationsask.ca. A winner will be selected through a competitive process involving input from key stakeholders. The winner will then receive funding of up to $10,000 and will work directly with SARM over the course of four months to develop a prototype of their technology.
“Our agriculture sector is at the forefront of innovation,” Minister Responsible for Innovation Saskatchewan Tina Beaudry-Mellor said. “Saskatchewan is home to a growing and inventive tech sector, ready to create solutions. The Innovation Challenge is a great way to tap into the ingenuity and creativity of Saskatchewan people, and bring together the tech sector and SARM to find a solution that works for both rural residents and the public.” The Innovation Challenge was first launched in 2017 with the
Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice. The challenge sought technological solutions to address rural crime. Saskatoon’s Rivercity Technology Services Limited won the challenge and developed a prototype during the 16-week residency. The company launched BeeSecure, an application-based tracking system and GPS device to alert land owners about irregular activity related to their property. “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” (PG-13) — In a follow-up to 2016’s delightful delve into the Potterverse, the notorious wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johhny Depp) escapes capture to continue building an empire of pure-blood followers, and magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is enlisted by a young professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) to help in his recapture. Scamander’s path leads through major players in his past (Zoe Kravitz as Leticia Lestrange) and present (the American gang from the original). It also journeys through another magical country; this time France. Although

Mahershala Ali is Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class classical and jazz pianist who is black. Viggo Mortensen is Tony Lip, a streettough Italian-American bruiser and bouncer from the Bronx. When Shirley embarks on a concert tour that will take him through the Deep South, he hires Lip as a driver and bodyguard. The two navigate the complex black travel experience with the help of the “Green Book,” while their personal interactions — each learning from and perhaps influencing the other — as well as their experiences on the road facing both racism and decency will move you. “Mortal Engines” (PG13) — In a steam-punk fan-
tasy future, a cataclysmic war has ended all nation civilizations, and cities — now mobile machines — stalk down and absorb smaller settlements. Such is the case of Salzhaken, which is eaten by the gigantor megacity London and where a mysterious young woman named Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) is among the newly appropriated citizens. Shaw has a vendetta against London’s
Guild of Historians head Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving) and has plans to assassinate him. Young apprentice historian Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) and resistance leader Anna Fang (Jihae) become her allies. I was super-stoked for this after seeing previews, but it just fell way short. The visuals are there, but unfortunately, the story isn’t.

It’s tortured beyond the point of being repetitive. We get it. How sexy! How clever! How cool! DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, in his mid-20s, uses a preworkout energy supplement to which I am opposed. Can you tell me if this is harmful so that I can show him scientific research and your educated and medically sound response? The supplement he uses contains alanine 1 g, creatine 1 g, arginine 1 g, tyrosine and velvet bean
Whenever I run into my Irish-American friend Margaret Wachholz, I feel like I’ve just won a ticket to the Emerald Isle. It’s not just her catchy sayings and accent that inspire me; she simply exudes joy whenever I tell her about my attempts to be just a wee bit Irish, especially around St. Patrick’s Day. When I recently shared a favorite biscuit recipe made with cheddar cheese and scallions, which I
seed extract. It also contains 150 mg caffeine. — B.G. ANSWER: It’s not always easy to tell what supplements are safe or effective for the condition they are marketed for, and the information available through a web search often is biased. One place I start to get information is Medline Plus (www. nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/), which has reliable information about many supplements, but you often have to search individually. In this case, alanine, arginine and tyrosine all are amino acids. These are the building blocks for proteins, and are safe in reasonable amounts.
thought might be ideal for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner, she exclaimed, “’Tis, indeed, but be sure to add lashings of butter! Irish butter.” Good thing, because this recipe calls for butter in the batter and for brushing on top of the warm bis-

Creatine is generally safe for adults, and has been shown modestly effective at helping improve strength in young male weightlifters. One gram is a fairly low dose and is generally considered safe. The 150 mg of caffeine is about the same as a cup of strong coffee. Velvet bean seed extract I had to look up. It has been used both as a food crop and in traditional medicines. It has toxicity at high doses, but at the dose in the supplement, it should be safe. In summary, I think this supplement is not likely to be harmful if taken in recommended doses, and it might have some small benefit. There is nothing
in the supplement that cannot be obtained easily and cheaply from food, apart from the velvet bean, which I think has the least proof of benefit of all the components of the supplement. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 49 years old and in good health. I recently was told by my doctor that what was first diagnosed as a swollen lymph is actually a condition called carotidynia. Can you please publish some information about this condition and what I can expect? Sometimes it is worse than at other times, but it never really goes away. I would not consider it painful; it is just uncomfortable, and when severe, it radiates up
into my ear and down into my chest. — S.W. ANSWER: Carotidynia (literally, “pain in the carotid artery”) can come from several distinct causes, some of which are catastrophic, such as a carotid artery dissection, which is a tearing of the lining of the artery. In some cases, carotidynia may be a form of migraine. After surgery or angioplasty to the carotid artery, one also can get pain that comes from the carotid itself. In the case of no other cause being identified, the condition is sometimes called idiopathic (which simply means “of unknown cause”) carotidynia, and some, but not all, experts think this condition comes
from a type of inflammation around the artery, which can sometimes be seen on CT or MRI scan. Idiopathic carotidynia is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medicines — ibuprofen, or prednisone in more severe cases. Most cases respond quickly, in a few days or up to a few weeks. However, I want to emphasize the need to thoroughly search for other concerning causes of neck pain. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.
cuits — perfectly suited to accompany an Irishthemed meal on March 17, This easy recipe skips mixers, kneading and biscuit cutters in the prep. Just set out a big bowl, grab a wooden spoon and call in the kids. They can measure and stir before you pop the doughy mounds in the oven. When baked, they can brush the lightly browned tops with “lashings” of butter and top with a shamrock-shaped flat parsley leaf as a nod to the “green.”
•1 tablespoon garlic powder •1 tablespoon sugar •1 teaspoon salt •1 cup whole milk •1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsalted melted butter (resources below) •2 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese (look for Irish cheddar for St. Patrick’s Day) •2 teaspoons scallions, chopped •1 tablespoon parsley, chopped •16 whole leaves from flat leaf parsley, for garnish (optional)
450 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. To prepare dough: In a large mixing bowl, let your kids measure and combine flour, baking powder, garlic powder, sugar and salt. Stir with a big spoon. Add milk and 1/2 cup of the melted butter, and combine lightly until flour is mixed in. (Do not overstir!) It will be sticky. Fold in the cheese, scallions and chopped parsley. To bake: Use an icecream scoop or large spoon to drop equal-size mounds on the baking sheet. Bake 12-14 minutes, until lightly browned. To serve: Remove from
oven. Brush each biscuit with remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter and press a parsley leaf shaped like a shamrock on top. Resources: Kerrygold brand pure Irish butter is widely available. The people of Ireland embraced the potato around 1780. The crop rapidly became the primary source of food for most of the population. Potatoes are nourishing and filling, and contain most of the vitamins needed for our daily diet. The crop also is a popular food source around the world because it requires only an acre of land and will grow under almost any conditions. An Irish potato is waxy, which makes it hold its shape when boiled, a common cooking technique in Ireland. The potatoes also are delicious when fried, roasted or broiled. The waxy texture of the potato makes it gluey and
Irish potatoes are perfect for any meal. An old prayer celebrates the tubers as follows: “Potatoes served at breakfast, at dinner served again; potatoes served at supper, forever and Amen!” Here’s a great recipe for Irish Potato Casserole that’s perfect for breakfast, dinner or supper, forever and Amen!! dense when mashed, so select another variety, like a Russet potato, for this purpose. An Irish potato is covered with an off-white or cream-colored skin, and its flesh is a creamy white. Black flecks or marks often mottle the flesh of the potato, but have no impact on the flavor. In the 1840s, a disease caused by a fungus infested potato crops throughout Europe, causing a devastating famine in Ireland. This time period is called the Great Famine or “Gorta Mor” meaning “the great hunger.” Mass
emigration coupled with widespread deaths from starvation caused the Irish population to drop by as much as 25 percent. By 1850, the Irish made up a quarter of the population in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore. After years of hardship and suffering in Ireland, Alexandre Millardet, a French botanist, discovered an effective fungicide to combat the potato blight in 1883. Today, potatoes are the world’s fourth-largest food crop, following rice, wheat and maize.
IRISH POTATO CASSEROLE •1-1/2 pounds (4 to 5 medium) Irish potatoes, peeled and diced •2 teaspoons salt •4 tablespoons butter, plus 1 teaspoon for greasing casserole dish •1/4 cup dried breadcrumbs •2 tablespoons flour •1-1/2 teaspoons black pepper •1/2 teaspoon nutmeg •2 cups milk •2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and sliced •1/2 small onion, finely diced
Heat oven to 350 F. Place potatoes in a large saucepan and cover them with cold water. Add a teaspoon of salt and bring potatoes to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Cook for 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender when a fork is inserted in the center. Carefully drain off water and set potatoes aside. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Place breadcrumbs in a small bowl. Add two tablespoons of the melted butter to the breadcrumbs; mix well and set aside. Reserve the rest of the butter in the saucepan. Stir in flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon pepper and the nutmeg into the butter in the saucepan. Cook until mixture starts to bubble around the edges, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add milk, a little at a time, stirring well after each addition. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes.
A9
Use the remaining teaspoon of butter to grease a 1-1/2 quart casserole dish. Combine potatoes, hardboiled eggs, onion and remaining salt and pepper in the casserole dish. Add sauce and gently mix the ingredients together until well-combined. Sprinkle buttered breadcrumbs over the casserole. Bake for 30 minutes or until bubbly around the edges and the breadcrumbs are brown. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings. Pros and cons of early retirement A lifetime of working compels many people to look forward to their retirement. Some people even work to retire early. But what are the advantages of early retirement beyond starting a life of leisure? And are there any detriments to this plan? A 2014 survey by the financial services provider TIAA-CREF found that 37 percent of Americans plan to retire before age 65. However, many of them will not have control over the matter. Those who do may want to consider the pros and cons of early retirement. Advantages Many people seek early retirement so that they can live a life free of the constraints of schedules. In retirement, time becomes, more or less, a retiree’s own. Leaving a job can be a boon to a person’s health as well. Relieving oneself of the pressures and stresses of professional life can free up the mind and body. Stress can affect mental and physical health, taxing the heart
and contributing to conditions such as depression or anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause headache, muscle and chest pain and contribute to trouble sleeping. The earlier the retirement, the more opportunity to travel before health issues begin to limit mobility. Early retirement
also can be a way to volunteer more or even start a new job opportunity — one where workers have greater control over their schedules and careers. Disadvantages One of the disadvantages of early retirement is a loss of income. Contributions to retire-
ment accounts also ceases at retirement. This can lead to financial setbacks if adequate savings were not allocated for retirement. According to the resource Wealth How, some people who retire early fear outliving their savings. While retiring early may be good for health,
it also can have negative consequences. An analysis from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that retirement can lead to declines in mental health and mobility as well as feelings of isolation. Retiring early may jump start these health implications. Another consideration
is that health insurance provided by an employer typically ends at retirement. That means having to pay out of pocket until a person ages into government-subsidized healthcare. Retiring early is a complex issue that requires weighing the pros and cons.

Are you lactose intolerant? Recipes are full of many different dairy products, including yogurt, cheese and milk. Such products can be delicious and healthy components of a balanced diet. However, consuming dairy can be painful for people who are lactose intolerant. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease says people who are lactose intolerant can experience symptoms such as gas, bloating and diarrhea after consuming foods and beverages that contain lactose. Lactose is the primary sugar in milk products. Lactose intolerance is also known as lactose malabsorption. The Mayo Clinic says a deficiency of lactase — an enzyme produced in the small intestine that helps with the digestion of lactose — is often responsible for intolerance to lactose. Under normal conditions, lactase turns milk sugar into two simple sugars: glucose and galactose. These are absorbed into the bloodstream through the intestinal lining. When individuals are lactase deficient, lactose in the foods they eat moves into their colon instead of being processed and absorbed. There, normal bacteria interact with undigested lactose, causing the signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance. Even though Career Opportunities

lactose intolerance can produce discomfort, it is usually harmless. Some people may avoid dairy
products completely, but that is not always necessary. Many people can man-
age their symptoms by consuming lactase products to help with their digestion of lactose.

Exercise and aging: how to work out safely after 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, finding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physi-
cally active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose low-intensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts. • Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people,
providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

ling raw foods, like frozen breaded chicken products. • Cook completely following package instructions. Follow Health Canada’s safe internal cooking temperatures chart to ensure that raw meat has been cooked to a safe internal temperature. Frozen raw breaded chicken products need to be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 74°C (165°F). • Get a digital thermometer. There are many types of thermometers, but digital ones are considered the most accurate because they provide instant and exact temperature readings. • Measure accurately. Remove your food from the heat and insert the
digital food thermometer through the thickest part of the meat or chicken, all the way to the middle. Make sure it’s not touching any bones, since they heat up more quickly and could give a false reading.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My Border Collie “Angus” is 12 years old, so he’s getting along. Until a few months ago he could whip along as fast as anything and had plenty of energy. At feeding time, he would jump up and down waiting for his food. However,
lately he runs very little, seems to have little energy and just waits patiently for his food. The veterinarian said he has probably developed arthritis, and it’s just to be expected at his age. What do you think? — Carl in Madison, Wisconsin DEAR CARL: Ask the veterinarian to run some tests. While yes, 12 years is getting up into senior years for a dog, Angus’ sudden change from an energetic adventurer to a lethargic homebody doesn’t seem normal. different vet. Angus may indeed have arthritis or just be slowing down, but there could be an underlying cause that can be treated. Diseases of age, like thyroid disorder, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis could be at work. A tick-borne disease (Lyme disease being just one of several) can cause symptoms similar to arthritis or neurological illness. There are other possibilities that should be considered, like cancer. Even if an illness or condition can’t be completely cured, there’s a good chance it can be managed. Angus shouldn’t have to slow down or stop doing the things he loves just because of an assumption that he’s too old. Get more tests, get a more detailed diagnosis of what may be causing Angus’ loss of energy, and work forward from there to rebuild his health. (NC) — Food poisoning isn’t just something you can get when you grab takeout. If we’re not careful, bacteria that can make you sick, like Salmonella, can be lurking in even our fanciest home kitchens. Some of the most common culprits lately have been frozen raw breaded chicken products, like nuggets, fingers and burgers. Many of these foods contain raw chicken, and should be handled with as much care as you would take with raw chicken. To keep Salmonella and other foodborne illnesses out of your kitchen, follow these simple tips: • Clean up. Always wash your hands, serving dishes, utensils and cutting boards thoroughly before and after hand-

The effects of caffeine on the body Caffeine is a vital component of many people’s daily routines. A morning cup of caffeinated coffee provides the boost people need to get out the door and on their way each morning. The history of caffeine and its use in beverages is mired in mystery and myth, though the U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that the historical origins of caffeinated tea and coffee are relatively recent. The USNLM indicates that coffee did not become widespread in Europe until the 18th and 19th centuries, remaining something of a luxury until somewhat recently. And while England’s love of tea is widely known, caffeinated
tea did not become common in Britain until the 18th century. While it might have taken its time to take root in many cultures across the globe, there’s no denying the prevalence of caffeine in the 21st century. A bitter substance that occurs naturally in more than 60 plants, caffeine can be found in coffee beans; tea leaves; kola nuts, which are used to flavor sodas; and cacao pods, which are vital to the creation of many chocolate products. Many people get their caffeine from beverages, and the amount of caffeine such people consume may depend on which beverages they choose. For example, the USNLM says that an eight-ounce
cup of coffee typically contains anywhere from 95 to 200 milligrams of caffeine. A 12-ounce can of soda is considerably less caffeinated, containing about 35 to 45 milligrams of caffeine on average. The extra boost people get from sodas might be due to sugar, as sodas are notoriously high in sugar. Caffeine has various effects on the body, some of which are beneficial. For example, the USNLM notes that caffeine is a diuretic, which means it can help the body get rid of extra salt and water by increasing the need to urinate. Caffeine also stimulates the central nervous system, providing that morning
boost of energy that so many coffee drinkers rely on every day. But not all side effects of caffeine consumption are beneficial. Because it increases the release of acid in the stomach, caffeine can sometimes contribute to upset stomach or heartburn. In addition, caffeine can interfere with the absorption of calcium in the body, though the organization American Bone Health notes that such interference may only occur among heavy coffee drinkers who consume upwards of four cups of coffee per day. The USNLM notes that most people can consume up to 400
milligrams of caffeine per day without suffering any ill effects. But exceeding that amount may contribute to a number of unwanted side effects, including restlessness, insomnia, headaches, dizziness, dehydration, anxiety, and rapid or abnormal hearth rhythm. It’s also important to recognize that some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others, so what’s good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander. Caffeine plays a vital role in many people’s lives, and understanding its effects can help people make smart decisions regarding their caffeine consumption.
Improve life expectancy with some healthy habits “Who Wants to Live Forever” is a song that appeared on the 1986 album “A Kind of Magic” by the rock band Queen. The song often sparks conversation about the potential benefits of immortality. Immortality may not be possible, but many people aspire to improve their chances to live a long and prosperous life. A study published in the journal Lancet analyzed data from the 2016 Global Burden of Diseases project to generate life expectancy predictions from 2017 to 2040 for most countries. The United States saw the largest decline in ranking among high-income countries, as life expectancies in the United States are projected to fall from 43rd in 2016 to 64th by 2040, with an average life expectancy of 79.8. Life expectancy in the U.S. has dropped
HOLLYWOOD — J.J. Abrams has completed filming Episode IX in the Luke Skywalker “Star Wars” saga. George Lucas first conceived chapters 4-6 in 1977 and always intended they’d be followed by the prequels 1-3, and finally three sequels, episodes 7-9. But after the first six films from 20th Century Fox, Disney became the new owner, Lucas bowed out and Abrams took the reins. The final episode of George Lucas’ “Stars Wars” baby premieres
in each of the past two years, according to annual reports by the National Center for Health Statistics. But there may be hope for Americans yet. Doctors and scientists continually study the lifestyles of people who outlive their life expectancies. While genetics can play a role, so can following healthy habits, which have been identified to promote longevity. • Don’t smoke. Many smokers have been told that smoking trims 10 years off their life expectancies, and that statement is corroborated by a study published in 2013 in The New England Journal of Medicine that tracked participants over a span of several years. The good news is people who quit before the age of 35 can usually regain those lost years.

Also done and shedding his cowl is Ben Affleck, who has decided not to continue as Batman in the Marvel Universe after playing the caped crusader in “Batman v Superman,” “Suicide Squad” and “The Justice League.” Already mentioned in dream casting to replace him are Jake Gyllenhaal, Jon Hamm, Robert Pattinson, Kit Harington, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Matthew Goode, Richard Armitage, Josh Harnett, Keanu Reeves and Armie Hammer. To give themselves more time to nail down a new Batman, the
Ben Affleck next film will be a prequel with 18-year-old “Gotham” Bruce Wayne, David Mazouz (who has played
• Avoid drug use. Accidental drug overdoses contributed to 63,600 deaths in the United States in 2016, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Usage of prescription opioids and heroin has skyrocketed in recent years. Drug use also may exacerbate mental illnesses, potentially making drug users more vulnerable to suicide. • Maintain healthy body mass. Moderate to vigorous exercise regimens and diets loaded with healthy foods can keep weight in check. Maintaining a healthy weight has a host of positive side effects, including reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a leading killer in North America. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly four in 10 adults Batman’s alter ego since 2014), for a June 2021 opening. Another superhero, Chris Evans, aka Captain America, had to bow out of star billing in “The Devil All the Time,” with Tom Holland, Mia Wasikowska and Robert Pattison, because of schedule conflicts. He’s been replaced by Sebastian Stan — Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Civil War,” “First Avenger,” “Ant Man,” “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Instead, Evans is taking second billing to Daniel Craig (007) in the mystery crime film “Knives
and 18.5 percent of children in the United States are obese. According to the 2015 Canadian Health Measures Survey, 30 percent of adults in Canada are obese and may require medical support to manage their disease. • Limit alcohol consumption. Some evidence suggests that light drinking can be good for cardiovascular health. However, a paper published in the Lancet suggests every glass of wine or pint of beer over the daily recommended limit will cut half an hour from the expected lifespan of a 40-year-old. The paper says the risks are comparable to smoking. Simple, healthy lifestyle changes can help people increase their life expectancies.
Out,” also with Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette and Christopher Plummer, due in theaters Nov. 27. Also changing his life is superstar Robert Redford, who retired from acting after “The Old Man and the Gun” (which grossed only $15 million), with Sissy Spacek and Casey Affleck. He’s also retired from his work of 34 years at Sundance Institute. Redford turned a piece of property in Park City, Utah, into a resort and founded the largest independent film festival in the U.S., which showcases films for distributors to buy and is
attended by 50,000 people annually. I met Redford in 1961, when he was on Broadway in “Little Moon of Alban,” with Julie Harris. In the many times I’ve run into him he’s always treated me like a long-lost friend. His work at the Sundance Institute has done so much to advance the independent film industry. In 2009 he wed longtime girlfriend Sibylle Szaggers, and at 82 years young it’s time for him to start a new phase of his life. Park City is an Eden, and Adam and Eve have found their paradise. ...
