EMW closing not good for Saltcoats By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Mayor of Saltcoats says news that EMW Industrial Ltd. having been placed into receivership was not good for the community. More than 200 employees of the Saltcoats location were told in mid-April that the firm, which was

founded in 1971 and specialized in industrial services such as fabrication and welding, was no longer in business. The financial consultancy firm Deloitte had become the receiver, assuming control of EMW with the purpose of repaying the debts held by the Saltcoats company. “They are the major

business in town,” said Mayor Grant McCallum, adding while EMW had expanded operations significantly over the years “it was a Saltcoats-based company to start with.” McCallum said in conversation with EMW founder Ewen Morrison, “it was not how he wanted it to end, with people out of work.”

The company had been working with it financers to find a way “to transition the company to someone else to run,” said McCallum. With that in mind EMW had done some layoffs, decreasing staff by about 100 to create a stronger business model, said McCallum. “They were trying to build a healthy business unit to make it more attractive for a buyer,” he said. McCallum added it was his understanding the company still had “dozens of profitable projects,” with a number of additional contracts to be started. The closure of EMW has left the firms in the contracts looking for services. On a personal level McCallum said he was disappointed the receiver chose to close the doors at EMW rather than operate it for a time, which they could have done, while seeking out a buyer for the entire company. “That was an option to continue running the business … I know banking is a harsh industry, but shutting the business down I don’t agree with,” he said. As it is, a few staff have been hired back to go to EMW jobsites to collect assets for a planned auction sale of those assets, said McCallum. McCallum said the full

effect of the closure will not be known, and will be determined by things such as whether someone will take up residency in the office building, and if employees can find jobs which allow them to stay in the community. “It’s hard to say what the long term outcome will be,” he said. “… I don’t have a crystal ball to specifically know what’s going to happen.” McCallum said he has had some preliminary indication that there may be a lead on a tenant for the office building, and that some of the EMW staff have found jobs locally, which are both positives for Saltcoats. Obviously it is important for employees who were living in Saltcoats to be able to stay, said McCallum. He noted that a number of employees were on EMW road crews, so are used to living locally and travelling for work, so they may find jobs away and still live in the community. That said, McCallum also said he was aware it has to be devastating for many employees, especially in a number of situa-

tions where both husband and wife worked for EMW. While a major business taxpayer, and local employer, McCallum said EMW will also be keenly missed as a good corporate citizen. He said the company regularly donated the use of equipment, provided people and made financial donations to various community projects. “The Town Hall is as good as it is today because EMW was in at the beginning (of an upgrade),” said the community’s Mayor, adding the hall is “now a showpiece of the community.” Similarly, EMW regularly donated in various ways to the regional park helping to maintain and upgrade ball diamonds and other work at the site, added McCallum. “EMW was always a good corporate citizen,” he reiterated. As for municipal taxes, McCallum said EMW was current in its taxes, adding again the community support of EMW was seen in as much as the company had done drainage grading around the community and received a tax rebate as payment.

THINK SPRING How to make spring projects more eco-friendly The arrival of warmer weather means different things to different people. Some anticipate opportunities for outdoor fun, while others may be considering redecorating or remodeling their homes. For the latter group, home improvement season provides a great opportunity to make homes more ecofriendly. When planning home improvement projects, it’s best to first choose a project and then look for ways to make the project more environmentally friendly. Such an approach may not only benefit the environment, but it also may benefit homeowners’ bottom lines. Interior decorating Longer days and warmer temperatures often translate into wanting to freshen up the interior of a home. Heavy draperies and comforters are put

away, and lighter fabrics are taken out of storage. Whenever possible, reuse or repurpose items you already have rather than purchasing new items. Longer drapes can be cut and hemmed to be used as window treatments in other rooms. Making a patchwork blanket out of old T-shirts is a crafty project that makes use of items that would otherwise be destined for landfills. When laundering linens, skip the energy-using dryer and let items line dry in the sun and fresh air. If you decide to purchase some new items, look for products made from sustainable or organic fabrics. Hemp and bamboo textiles have grown in popularity. Hemp and bamboo plants grow quickly, and their durability makes these materials

smart choices. When replacing items around the house, donate older items to a charitable organization. Flowers and plants Spring and summer call to mind beautiful blooming plants. Relying on native, sustainable plants is practical, environmentally friendly and costeffective. According to the National Wildlife

Federation, sustainable plants are native plants. Native plants sustain local wildlife more effectively than non-native alternatives, so include native plants in your sustainable garden. Native plants also are less reliant on pesticides and herbicides to keep them healthy and viable. Don’t forget to bring plants indoors as well. Even though you may

be opening the windows more, indoor plants can filter and purify indoor air. Certain common indoor plants naturally remove toxic agents such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air. Efficient air cleaning is accomplished with at least one plant per 100 square feet of home or office space. Proper disposal Spring cleaning is another tradition for many families come the end of winter and dawn of spring. Many people use spring as a time to go through closets and garages to remove items they no longer use or need. In an effort to clean up fast, some people may dispose of chemical products, paints, treated lumber, and many other items in ways that can be damaging to the environment. Always learn local municipal guidelines for

proper disposal of potentially harmful products. Area recycling centers may have drop-off areas for stains and paints, used motor oil and other potentially harmful products. Before discarding something, see if it can be donated or sold. This will result in fewer items ending up in landfills. Exercise caution outdoors as well. Runoff from cleaning products used on home siding or driveways can leach into the surrounding soil or find its way into sewage drains that ultimately direct fluids to public waterways. Choose environmentally responsible products whenever possible. Springtime renovation and cleaning projects provide the perfect opportunity to adopt eco-friendly practices that pay dividends for years to come.

Post-winter garden preparation tips Lawns and gardens can bear the brunt of winter weather and are often in need of tender loving care by the time spring arrives. Preparing a garden for spring and summer

involves assessing any damage that harsh weather might have caused. As temperatures climb, gardeners can heed the following post-winter garden preparation tips in an

effort to ensure some successful gardening in the months ahead. • Assess the damage. Even if winter was mild, gardens might still have suffered some damage. Inspect garden beds and any fencing or barriers designed to keep wildlife from getting into the garden. Before planting anew, fix any damage that Mother Nature or local wildlife might have caused over the past several months. • Clear debris. Garden beds and surrounding landscapes that survived winter without being damaged might still be littered with debris. Remove fallen

leaves, branches and even litter that blew about on windy winter days before planting season. Make sure to discard any debris effectively so it does not find its way back into the garden. • Turn the greenhouse into a clean house. Spring cleaning is not just for the interior of a home. Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring. • Check for pests. Speak with a local gardening pro-

fessional to determine if there are any local pests to look out for and how to recognize and remove these pets from gardens. Pests may hibernate in the soil over the winter, and such unwelcome visitors can make it difficult for gardens to thrive come spring

and summer. • Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks. Spring gardening season is right around the corner, so now is an ideal time to prepare gardens for the warmer seasons ahead.

THINK SPRING

A9

Go green in your lawn and garden Spring is a season of rejuvenation. As the cold days of winter drift away, spring blooms begin to sprout and grass regains its lush green look. Green is certainly a color that’s synonymous with spring. Gardening enthusiasts can find a way to make spring even more green by embracing several eco-friendly gardening practices as they bring their lawns and gardens back to life in the months to come. • Create a compost pile. Composting is an ecofriendly way to enrich lawns and gardens. Composting helps to conserve water because compost promotes moisture retention in soil, reducing

homeowners’ need to water their lawns and gardens while also helping them to save money on their water bills. Composting also helps homeowners avoid the need to use potentially harmful chemical fertilizers because compost is a natural, slow release fertilizer. In addition, according to Canada’s Green Action Centre, compostable materials make up 40 percent of residential waste. So composting can dramatically reduce the amount of waste homeowners ultimately send to landfills. • Replace gas-powered mowers with reel lawn mowers. Reel mowers may seem like relics from simpler times, but today’s reel mowers, while just as eco-

friendly as their predecessors, are unlike those of yesteryear. According to the Planet Natural Research Center, an online resource for organic gardeners, gas-powered engines emit more than 10 times the hydrocarbons per amount of gas burned

than auto engines. But reel mowers are fuel-free and less expensive than gaspowered mowers. Planet Natural also notes that reel mowers snip grass like scissors, leaving finer trimmings that can serve as nourishing, weed-deterring mulch for yards.

• Water at the right times of day. Homeowners who water their lawns and gardens at the right time of day can help the planet and reduce their energy bills. As spring gradually gives way to summer, temperatures typically rise. Watering during the coolest times of the day means less water will be lost to evaporation, ensuring water-needy soil will get all it needs to help lawns and gardens thrive. Early morning watering before the sun reaches its midday peak and/or evening watering as the sun is setting are typically great times to water lawns and gardens, rather than when temperatures are at their hottest. • Use a rain barrel. Rain

barrels provide another great way to conserve water while tending to lawns and gardens. Rain barrels collect and store rain water from roofs and downspouts, keeping water from washing into sewage systems where it can’t be put to good use. Water collected in rain barrels can be used in various ways. Many homeowners can use water from rain barrels to water their lawns, gardens and houseplants, saving money on their water bills along the way. Spring gardening season provides a great opportunity for lawn and garden enthusiasts to embrace a variety of eco-friendly practices that can save them money and protect the planet.

Gardening during a drought During the early and oftentimes rain-drenched days of spring, it can seem like there may never be a time when plants will struggle to get their share of water. But drought can affect any area, and arid climates in particular. Ensuring gardens can survive drought takes patience and forethought. Drought can be particularly troubling for avid gardeners because it can wreak havoc on lawns and gardens. In addition to causing changes in the physical appearance, including wilted, dried out leaves and stalks, drought can weaken the integrity of plants. This makes plants more susceptible to disease and attacks from plant-preying insects, according to Better Homes & Gardens. In addition, it can take years for plants to recover from drought. So what can gardeners do? While they may not be able to prevent damage to plants from drought, gardeners are not helpless. • Water well infrequently. Get plants used to a thorough watering every week or every other week. This will help develop

strong, deep roots rather than shallow ones that will need frequent watering to thrive. • Choose drought-tolerant plants. Homeowners can work with garden centers and landscape professionals to create gardens that are full of water-wise plants and flowers. Some examples of plants that can survive with minimal water include the blanket flower, Spanish lavender, euphorbia rigida, and kangaroo paw. • Apply a layer of mulch. Mulch can protect delicate plants and the rest of the landscape by reducing the evaporation of soil moisture. Mulch will keep soil cool and moist. • Skip the fertilizer. Since fertilizers encourage plant growth, it’s best to skip them during drought, as growing plants require extra water. • Invest in rain barrels. When it rains, maximize the amount of water that can be collected by connecting rain barrels to downspouts on the house. This water can be used to water gardens when dry weather returns. • Use organic materials.

PAINTLESS PAINTLESS DENT DENT REPAIR REPAIR LARRY KABAN Succulents are good drought-tolerant plants to include in landscape designs. Amend the soil with organic materials, like compost. The Grow Network advises that light, fluffy soils with air pockets in between the soil particles route water efficiently during floods and retain moisture for plants. Therefore, such soils can perform very well during drought. Gardens can survive drought with simple actions and smart planting.

THINK SPRING

Choosing materials for decking Warm weather often gives rise to thoughts about spending time in the great outdoors. Decks can expand outdoor living spaces, making them popular home additions. However, when it comes time to map out a deck

building plan, individuals may be unsure as to which deck material will meet their needs. Wood and composite decks are among the most popular choices today, and the popularity of aluminum is growing steadily.

Wood Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. According to the wood resource Real Cedar, some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very costeffective decking options. According to Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks retain considerable resale value. In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include cedar

and redwood. Popular Mechanics says both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Periodic cleaning and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be much more durable than people may think. Composite Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber, are some of the fastest-growing decking materials on the market. Many products are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Some composites will be comprised of recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather- and stainresistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter. Composite manufacturers continually experiment with manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural wood grain. Homeowners are often drawn to composite decking because such decks require little maintenance. These decks do not need to be sanded, stained or refinished. However,

mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are not completely maintenancefree. Aluminum Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. According to LockDry®, a manufacturer of aluminum decking materials, powercoated aluminum does not need to be replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most planks have interlocking edges that

create gap-free, watertight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a very strong but lightweight material. Some people may think that aluminum decks would be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler in the sun because of its heat-dissipation properties. For those who have green goals in mind, aluminum is totally recyclable. Various decking materials can meet the look, price point and maintenance level homeowners desire.

The arrival of spring is a welcome occurrence for many people. Budding flowers are among the harbingers of spring. Spring flowers can revitalize winter-weary people just when they need it most and provide reassurance that brighter, warmer and longer hours of sunlight are just around the corner. Cold-tolerant flowers are hardy enough to start blooming before the last frosts have dissipated. Other flowers will begin to fill in as days warm a little bit more, according to Better Homes and Gardens. Home gardeners looking to warm up their gardens with early blooms can use these flowers in their early-season containers, window boxes and planting beds. • Pansy: Pansies prefer cool weather, which can make them one of the best flowers to plant in early spring and late fall. Pansies come in a variety of colors, so there’s bound to be an offering that will

Phlox produces small, fragrant flowers in dense clusters, which can attract wildlife, such as butterflies, to their mats across the soil surface. • Snowdrops: Snowdrops can peek out even when there is snow still on the ground - sometimes as early as January and February. But their name is actually a reference to their appearance, as snowdrops have three white petals that hang down like drops dripping off the stem. • Violets: These flowers are closely related to pansies and, as a result, prefer cool seasons. Violets are

generally slightly smaller than pansy blooms, but they can be just as beautiful. But as with pansies, violets will start to fade when the heat arrives. • Crocus: Crocus plants are relatively small, only reaching three to six inches in height. However, their grass-like leaves are some of the first sprouts that can be seen among bulb and corm plantings. Preferring full to partial sun, these gold, purple, lavender, white, or yellow flowers can be enjoyed during the earliest days of spring. • Daffodil: Daffodil bulbs produce cheerful, yellow flowers in early spring. They’re one of the most recognizable flowers thanks to their familiar shape and fragrant aroma. • Lenten rose: Hellebores, also called the Lenten rose or Christmas rose, can tolerate light frosts. These blooms get their name from the time of year when they bloom, which is typically around the Christian Lenten season. Despite their name, these delicate flowers are not actually related to roses, however. Early-blooming flowers give winter-weary gardeners hope that spring has arrived.

old, and covered in tin which led to a quicker burn. In terms of age, Wilson said it is presently unclear exactly how old the building was. “One person was saying it was built in the ‘30s,” he said, adding another person suggested “it was the ‘50s.” There was an addition added in the early 2000s. With the building fully engaged by the time the department arrived Wilson said “we just tried to get out what we could,” said Wilson. The firefighters also focused attention on preventing the fire spreading. “There was a pretty strong breeze,” said Wilson, adding there was a “big grass field” across the road in the direction of the wind, which meant ash and embers were blowing toward the grass, so they had to make sure a wild grass fire did not get started. Tantallon is located in the Qu’Appelle Valley about 32 km east of Round Lake.

The Valley View Hotel in Tantallon completely burned to the ground in the early hours April 25. No injuries were reported and it is still unknown what caused the fire. The Rocanville Fire Department responded to the fire taking the call at about 2:20 a.m. last Thursday, said Chief Owen Wilson. “By the time we got there everything was fully engulfed,” he said, noting it is a 20-25 minute drive from Rocanville to Tantallon. The building was also Trucking & Transport

Spring Awakening day camp at WDM By Cory Carlick Staff Writer Spring is just around the corner, and the Western Development Museum in Yorkton held

a fun day camp for kids on Thursday, April 25th. Designed to help kids explore nature and learn more about what plants and animals need to grow, kids even got to grow their

own plants. “We have the kids here trying their hand with the spring scavenger hunt, they’re doing some crafts that are nature related, and they’re also going to

be doing some planting, said Solange Massicotte, Program Coordinator for the WDM. “They’re going to be able to take their plant home with them and that’s

quite exciting for kids.” This year’s morning day camps have sold out -- but don’t worry, there’s a summer camp in August, called Blast From The Past, which will be

held at the WDM as well. Registration will start soon and is expected to fill quickly. For more information contact the WDM Yorkton at (306) 783-8361.

PHYSIOTHERAPISTS:

TRUE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS Did you know that more than 20,000 practicing physiotherapists come to the aid of patients in need every day in clinics across Canada? National Physiotherapy Month (held annually in May) is the perfect opportunity to recognize the exemplary work that these rehabilitation specialists do and to learn more about this constantly evolving field. A DIVERSE CLIENTELE Physiotherapists work in a number of practice settings, such as hospitals, shelters, rehabilitation centres, private clinics, sports clinics, schools and seniors’ residences. They work with patients of all ages who demonstrate functional limitations affecting their musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory or neurological system. When it comes to treating developmental delays in children, loss of balance in seniors, muscle injuries in athletes or motor skill disabilities in handicap patients, physiotherapists are always there to help! PERSONALIZED TREATMENT PLANS Thanks to their extensive knowledge of the workings of the human body, physiotherapists are able to properly assess their patients’ physical abilities and draft a personalized treatment plan adapted to their specific recovery needs. They may recommend a variety of therapeutic treatments that involve exercises and manual techniques, as well as more specialized courses of action, such as electrotherapy, hydrotherapy and thermotherapy.
