Rural fire termed ‘suspicious’ By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer A fire at an abandoned yard site just south of Canora on Highway #9 has been termed ‘suspicious’ in nature. Eric Sweeney, deputy chief of the Canora and District Fire Department said they received a call regarding the fire at 12:33 a.m. Tuesday and responded with a crew of eight to find the grass and buildings already on fire. Given that the yard site was not lived in, and that power to the yard was shut off, there was immediately some thought the fire could have started under suspicious circumstances, said fire chief Devon Sawka. The fire, located roughly 40 kilometres north of Yorkton, was just being brought under control when the department received a second call at 1:44 to respond to a garage

fire at Burgis Beach, said Sweeney. In response to the dual fires the Rhein Fire Department was called in to carry out some mop up duties at the yard site, while Canora headed to the garage fire. Then at 11:24 a.m. the Canora Department was again called to the yard site where fire had once again broke out. Again the department responded with trucks and a crew of eight. Sawka said the fire starting again did not match with what you might expect if it was a missed hot spot, and was actually in a locale that was not the way the wind was blowing if the original fire had restarted, again causing them to think the second ignition was suspicious. On the second visit to Canora firefighters set a back fire to prevent the yard fire from getting to Highway #9, said Sweeney. The fire would com-

Goulden said when she looked over the list of nominees across the various categories she said she couldn’t help but be impressed. “There were so many amazing contributions they’ve made to their communities,” she had said at the time of her nomination. As it was the new award was the last to be presented, and Goulden said she was just enjoying the evening talking to people such as fellow nominee Sheryl Spence the Mayor of Warman. “I was having some nice conversations,” she said. And then her name was announced. “I kind of didn’t believe it,” she said, adding she initially thought they were simply reviewing the nominees. Then it sunk in that she has won. “It was just overwhelming,” she reiterated. Goulden said the award was made just a bit more special for her as it came on the same night Senator Lillian Dyck was pre-

Randy Goulden sented the 2019 Women of Distinction Lifetime Achievement Award. “I called her my silent mentor,” said Goulden, who added she has long followed Dyck’s career finding inspiration in it. Dyck is a member of the Gordon First Nation in Saskatchewan, and a first generation Chinese Canadian, The Honorable Dr. Lillian Eva Quan Dyck is well-known for advocating for equity in the education and employment of women, Chinese Canadians and Aboriginals. She is the

first female First Nations senator and first Canadian born Chinese senator. “Imagine some of the things she had to go through in her life,” said Goulden. As for Goulden’s own career her bio notes state she has “many years of work in the community as well as her involvement with provincial and national organizations which have kept her in close touch with the people of Saskatchewan and the issues directly affecting them. First elected to Yorkton City Council in 1997, Randy continues to serve and is on both the provincial Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association and the national Federation of Canadian Municipalities. She believes all municipal councils and associations are to be inclusive with women equally represented. An active community volunteer, she has served on community, provincial, and national committees. Randy believes and promotes that all people should be more active, working with Saskatchewan in Motion since its inception.” Following the presentation many stepped forward to congratulate Goulden. She said she could not help but recognize the variety of connections she has made in her life as people ranging from community mayors to a waitress that used to serve her and her grandchildren were in attendance. Having family there, husband Rex, two daughters, a grandson and two granddaughters also “made it special,” said Goulden.

Farming for Health under way By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The 2019 edition of the Farming for Health initiative got under way last Thursday, as planting started. The Health Foundation

has been planting crops and selling the production for a number of years as a major fundraising initiative. Project co-chair Larry Hilworth said the money from the project was earmarked to go toward a new

hospital in the city, and raised $1 million for that purpose. With the $1 million in the bank awaiting the province moving forward with a new hospital it was decided to refocus the Farming for Health pro-

ject on some equipment needs at the hospital, said Hilworth. “We still hope a new hospital will come,” he said, adding until that happens there are other needs within the health system. In 2018 $159,467 was

Good week in terms of planting crop Significant seeding progress was made this past week as 38 per cent of the crop is now in the ground, ahead of the fiveyear average (2014-18) of 31 per cent for this time of year. Crops are slow to emerge due to cool conditions. Seeding is furthest advanced in the southeastern region, where 53 per cent of the crop is in the ground. Fifty-two per cent of the crop is seeded in the southwest, with 31 per cent seeded in the east-central region, 32 per cent in the west-central region, 22 per cent in the northeast and 28 per cent in the northwest.

Rainfall was reported this past week throughout the province. The Nipawin area received the greatest amount, 21 mm. Most regions of the province need rain to help alleviate dry field conditions. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 52 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and seven per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 46 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and 14 per cent very short. Hay and pasture growth has been slow due to little rainfall and cool conditions. Winter wheat assessments are continuing as fields green up and

temperatures rise. Farmers are busy seeding, working fields, controlling weeds and moving cattle.

raised for digital microscopy system. This year it is hoped the 360 acres of canola being planted will generate enough dollars when sold in the fall to fund new ultrasound equipment. Hilworth said the key to the success of the project over the years has been the support of sponsors, starting with the land which is owned by the City of Yorkton. Beyond the land, Hilworth said they receive donations ranging from

equipment and labour to do the actual field work; harrowing, seeding, stone picking, harvest and grain hauling, through to support in terms of helping with the cost of seed and fertilizer. “It’s amazing the agriculture community can come together for such a good cause,” he said, adding companies that traditionally compete for market share are willing to work together “for the betterment of the Health Foundation.”

Speaking of Netflix, Ben Affleck has signed to star in the World War II drama “Ghost Army,” based on a Netflix documentary about soldiers who fool the enemy by using inflatable tanks, sound effects and other trickery. Back in the 1950s, movie studios utilized widescreen CinemaScope and 3-D to get people back into theatres after the advent of television. Today studios are using IMAX and 3-D to make The Marvel Universe of comicbook heroes larger than life. “Avengers: Infinity War” grossed over $2 billion, making it the fourth all-time box office earner (behind “Avatar,” “Titanic” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”). “Captain Marvel” earned more than a $1 billion, while “Shazam,” from DC Comics, easily grossed more than $500 million. But the story here is about “Avengers: Endgame” which grossed $107 million its opening day in Japan (before opening in the U.S.) and amassed a $200 million advance ticket sale. That could challenge “Avatar” for first place ... that is until “Avatar” 2, 3 and 4 are released three years in a row starting Dec. 18, 2020, which could be the beginning of “The Endgame”!

I am very thankful for this scholarship as it will help me to further my education in Animal Science.” In addition to Sauser, Madison McNeil of Alameda, and Morgan Davey of Delisle, also received runner-up scholarships valued at $2,000 each. The Agriculture Student Scholarship Program identifies young people who are advocates for agriculture and leverages their passion and ability to tell the story of Saskatchewan agriculture. Kaitlyn Sauser of Churchbridge received runner-up scholarships valued at $2,000 through the Agriculture Student Scholarship program. The award was officially released by Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit recently as they awarded four agriculture scholarships to students from across the province. Sauser, in Grade 12 in Churchbridge explained the scholarship required applicants to submit a video, or essay on the impact focused on the positive aspects of the sector. Sauser said she made a three-minute video focused on how the family cattle farm is part of the broader economy. “I grew up on a cattle farm,” she said, adding the 100-head herd has been the focus of what is essentially a mixed farm operated by her parents Sheldon and Tamara Sauser. While Sauser said she plans to head to the University of Saskatchewan in the fall to begin classes in agriculture business, she admit-

ted it was not initially in her mind to go into agriculture. “I never would have thought of myself in agriculture,” she told Yorkton This Week, adding she was leaning toward some business desk job. But, a ‘career crawl’ changed her mind as it showed “how agriculture is going to be part of the future,” she said. “It caught my eye,” she said, adding she came to recognize a career in the agriculture sector would match her interests well. As for the scholarship, Sauser said it came as a surprise, adding she knew there would be lots of good application. “I thought my video was a good work, but it was a surprise (to win),” she said. In a release federal minister Bibeau; said, “By supporting our youth through programs like the Agriculture Student Scholarship, we are helping to secure a promising future for our industry. These innovative students will play an important part in telling the Canadian agricultural story… “ Marit echoed the same sentiments in the release. “The 2019 scholarship winners’ submissions showed commitments to sustainable production,

The Yorkton Pride crosswalk gets painted, with the help of students from the Yorkton Regional High School. It is located at Darlington St. and Gladstone Ave.

Pride Week begins with a rainbow By Devin Wilger Staff Writer Drivers on Gladstone Ave. will see something a

bit brighter at one of the crosswalks. A rainbow stretches across the street, commemorating the start of Pride Week in Yorkton.

Laura Budd, one of the organizers of Yorkton’s Pride Week, said that the week is going to be a full celebration of the LGBTQ+

community in the city. A wide range of events will take place starting on Tuesday. The week begins with a Pride flag raising at Yorkton Regional High School at noon on May 21. There will be two performances of The Pink Unicorn by Free My Muse Theatre, one on May 21 and one on May 22, both at the Sacred Heart High School Theatre at 7:00 p.m. On May 23 there will be a Pound with Pride class at the St. Michael’s gym at 6:30 p.m. On May 24 there will be a Queer Movie Night and Pizza Party at the Boys and Girls Club at 6:00 p.m.

The week ends with several events on Saturday, May 25. The Pride Parade starts at the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery at 11:00 a.m. This is followed by a Pride BBQ and LJ Tyson and the Haus of Nonsense at Shaw Park. It ends at 8:00 p.m. with the Yorkton Pride Drag Show feat. 28th Imperial House of LOL at the Masonic Lodge. The fact that there is an official Pride Week in Yorkton, with the week declared by council and city crews assisting in controlling traffic to allow a rainbow crosswalk, is evidence how fortunate Yorkton is overall, said Budd.

“There are countries in the world where it’s illegal to have same-sex attraction and be in a same-sex relationship, and to be gender diverse. Here in Yorkton, Sk. we have the support of the city and the community to be who we are, to love who we love and be a part of this community, and be celebrated rather than shunned.” Budd would love to see the entire community come out and celebrate, no matter how people identify. “It is world class entertainment you can get right here in Yorkton, so come celebrate with us.”

“Fighting With My Family” (PG-13) — When dad Ricky Knight (Nick Frost) catches siblings Raya (Florence Pugh) and Zak (Jack Lowden) fighting, instead of breaking the kids up, he offers pointers on Zak’s headlock. The Knights are a wrestling family. The kids step in the ring on the local circuit and eventually get a tryout for a professional spot with WWE, but only Raya is accepted. She is whisked off to Florida to train, an ocean away from her family, in the care of an obnoxious trainer played by Vince Vaughn

and feeling that she’s not like the other girls. I went in expecting it to be a little bit “girl power” — it’s based on the real-life story of WWE’s Paige, the youngest Diva Champion — but I left feeling like it’s more about becoming comfortable with your own strengths, a message that applies to Raya and her brother. “Happy Death Day 2U” (PG-13) — In this surprisingly infectious sequel to 2017’s “Happy Death Day,” Jessica Rothe returns as the perpetually perishing Tree Gelbman, who finally made it to Tuesday (in the original, she kept dying and returning to wake up again on Monday morning, a la “Groundhog Day”). But then her pal Ryan (Phi Vu) announces that HE is reliving the same day over again, and Tree jumps in with an assist. It had to be tremendously tricky to

Jessica Rothe in “Happy Death Day 2U”. find a legitimate follow-up story, but producer Jason Blum and writer/director Christopher Landon managed to hit just the right time loop, coming up with a sequel that’s still irreverent and self-deprecating, funny and somehow novel, despite the fact that it’s a repetitive remake of itself. “Cold Pursuit” (R) — Liam Neeson headlines as Nels Coxsman, a snow-

plow driver in a Colorado ski town. He’s a nice fellow, the hokey kinda guy whose fellow townsfolk would name “Citizen of the Year.” But then his son turns up dead of an overdose under some very suspicious circumstances (according to his brother with a criminal past), and ol’ Nels decides to go after the local drug kingpin, named The Viking. Is he

a stone-hearted killer? Nope, just a guy with a death vendetta, a snowplow, a can-do attitude and lots of places to hide bodies. “Apollo 11” (G) — Director Todd Douglas Miller takes advantage of a previously undiscovered archive of footage and audio recordings surrounding Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong

and Buzz Aldrin’s voyage to the moon and back in the documentary “Apollo 11.” It covers pre-flight training, preparations and interviews and continues all the way through the actual moonwalk and return flight. Featuring voice-overs from Walter Cronkite, and painstakingly restored and scanned film, you’ll find new background on key players. The secrets to being an organized family Modern families seem to be juggling more than ever before. When time seems to be a luxury, an ability to stay organized can help families manage the hustle and bustle of daily life more effectively. An online survey conducted by an internal research team on behalf of The Huffington Post polled more than 1,000 American adults in 2013, revealing 84 percent of recently stressed Americans say they worry that their home isn’t clean or organized

enough. Within that group, 55 percent cited disorganization at home as a source of recent stress. Disorganization does not occur overnight, and neither will getting reorganized. But with some motivation, all families can become more orderly. Manage mornings Families can usually use more help getting out of the house each morning in a timely manner. Each member of the household should have a designated

area where they keep the items they will need for the next morning. Backpacks and briefcases should be prepacked, and lunches made the night before. In addition, sort the next day’s clothes before going to bed. Such efforts should make it easier to get out of the house on time each morning. Sort the entryway Home entryways are usually hubs of traffic. Such areas are the first and last place family mem-

bers go when entering or leaving the house. As a result, these areas are in need of some routine organizational attention. Use sorting bins for shoes, hooks for coats, trays for mail or homework, and other sorting equipment to keep things tidy and orderly. Embrace the purge Take a hard look at what you use and what you don’t use around the house. Holding on to items you rarely use can contrib-

ute to clutter and create a disorganized home. Save only a few sentimental items, donating, recycling or discarding the others. Many organizational experts suggest going through items one by one and asking oneself if this is something that has been used recently. If it’s been collecting dust for a year or more, it can go. Sensible storage Analyze what you have and then find sensible storage solutions. Store

belongings in the same place each day so items are easy to find when needed. Frequently used items should be easily accessible. Seldom used items, such as holiday decorations, can be stored out of the way. It takes commitment and time to get organized. However, life tends to move along much more smoothly in organized homes than homes marked by clutter.

By Dana Jackson Q: “Mom” is my favorite comedy, but did I miss something? Early in season six, they explained why Christy’s daughter Violet was no longer on the show, but what about her son, Roscoe? He just disappeared and isn’t even mentioned. — B.H. A: When “Mom” premiered on CBS in 2013, Anna Faris’ character, Christy, had two children and the focus of the sitcom was on her and costar Allison Janney’s

funny but dysfunctional relationship. After a few years, Chuck Lorre, co-creator of the show, decided that in order to keep the show fresh, the writers had to expand Christy’s life outside of the home. Mimi Kennedy and Jaime Pressly joined the cast as fellow AA group members, and son Roscoe (Blake Garrett Rosenthal) was never seen again. We’re just supposed to assume he’s alive — somewhere. “Mom” has been renewed for two more seasons. Perhaps on the series finale, Roscoe will come down from the attic, sporting a long beard, and explain that he’s been playing Fortnite for the past several years. Joking aside, I believe the show I’ve been baking and writing about bran muffins for years. This spring, I put my favorite recipes to the test, and if my family tasters are honest, I’ve hit on an updated version that is so good, I have to hide them in the recesses of my cupboard pantry if

did she leave “Chicago Fire”? — R.L.

A: After six seasons of playing first responder Gabriela Dawson on the hit NBC shows “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.,” Monica Raymund decided it was time for a change. In an interview last September with the Chicago Tribune, she said that even though she would miss her work family terribly, she was ready to make her home in Los Angeles and seek out grittier projects.

I’m going to get my share. Still full of good and healthy stuff, I now soak the raisins a bit so they puff up before stirring into the batter. I added more chopped walnuts. When I did a taste test with two recipes, one with a smooshed-up ripe banana, and one without, the banana won. It adds a nice taste and texture. Taste testing aside, the fun part of muffin-making with kids is that there’s a job for all ages and stages. One child can measure and stir together dry ingredients in one bowl, while another cracks the egg or smooshes the banana in a different bowl. Within minutes, the batter comes together and is ready to scoop into little paper cups and bake. Wash and dry the prepping dishes as a team, and before you know it, you’re poking a toothpick in the middle of a muffin to test doneness and enjoying a healthy homemade snack in a kitchen where the baking aroma of home wafts through the air. The drama also stars James Badge Dale (“Rubicon”) and Riley Voelkel (“Roswell, New Mexico”). Q: We enjoy reading your fun, informative articles in “Tidbits.” We’re wondering where the TV series “Manifest” went and if you know when it will return? Also, when will “Schitt’s Creek” begin airing season six? — C.C.

As for “Schitt’s Creek,” creators and stars of the show, Eugene and Dan Levy, recently announced that the next season will be its last. The comedy has grown in popularity since it debuted on the Pop network, but the Levys wanted it to go out on a high note. The final 14-episode season won’t air until sometime in 2020. In the meantime, past episodes are airing on Pop as well as Netflix’s streaming service.

An icecream scoop works well. Bake until lightly browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 20-25 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes and serve. Makes 12 large muffins. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have never seen anything in your column about sebaceous hyperplasia. I read that it is quite similar to acne and that a person could use an acne treatment to keep the condition in check. Could you give your thoughts on this? — R.G. ANSWER: Although sebaceous hyperplasia can be mistaken for acne, sebaceous hyperplasia happens mostly to middleaged adults (or newborns). These bumps appear most commonly on the forehead and cheeks, and have an umbilicus (a small hole) in the center. They are enlargements of the oil-producing sebaceous glands. They happen particularly in people with oily skin. Treatment can be challenging. Reducing dietary fat and using a good-

Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The situation would be different for a high-risk endoscopic procedure, such as removing a large polyp. I have had to deal with this situation many times in my practice, and most often, all anticoagulants are stopped then restarted after the colonoscopy. There are some people who are at such high risk for clots that we use injection medications to prevent blood clots until the night before the procedure, but that is normally reserved for the highest risk of all. It’s a judgment call as to whether to use the injection anticoagulants to prevent clots around the colonoscopy. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

• It was Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky who made the following sage observation: “Silence will save me from being wrong (and foolish), but it will also deprive me of the possibility of being right.” • You might be surprised to learn that a male lion can mate up to 50 times in one day. • Before the iconic reclining armchair was dubbed “La-Z-Boy,” the names “Sit-N-Snooze,” “Slack Back” and “Comfort Carrier” were considered. • A researcher calculated that across the country of Great Britain, the weight of all the insects that are eaten by spiders in a year would be more than the combined weight of all the people who live there. • A 22-year-old man who was trying to board a flight in Cairo, Egypt, bound for Saudi Arabia was stopped by security officers when the X-ray of his hand luggage showed some strange results. It seems that the man was attempting to transport 250 baby crocodiles and — wait for it — a

live cobra. (Animal lovers will be pleased to learn that the creatures were not harmed; they were turned over to the Cairo zoo.) • Those who study such things say that automatic teller machines are three times more likely to be robbed between 6 and 9 p.m. than at any other time of day. • According to horseracing regulations, no racehorse’s name can have more than 18 characters — anything longer would be cumbersome on racing sheets. • In some parts of Europe, red roses are considered to be omens of evil. Seeing the petals fall from a red rose is a portent of death. days prior to a colonoscopy. Since this was a contradiction to the instructions from the clinic, I have tried to reach out to other medical sources to see if I could get a consensus on what to do, but no one has responded to me yet. There is a strong history of clotting problems in my family. Would you weigh in on this matter? The last time I had a screening colonoscopy was around 2005, and there weren’t any issues. I realize this is a scope and not surgery, but it has me concerned enough that I am considering putting this off until I can get a satisfactory response. — B.R. ANSWER: Most screening colonoscopies now are done with patients still on their anticoagulants, although for patients on warfarin (Coumadin), it is preferred for levels to be on the low end of the therapeutic range. This is a standard recommendation by the American

quality skin-care regimen for oily skin may help. Dermatologists can treat these when they are cosmetically important, not because they cause harm in themselves. Although they can be mistaken for basal cell cancers of the skin, they are not cancerous or pre-cancerous. They are mostly treated mechanically, and by that I mean using a surgical technique like cauterization or excision. But these techniques can leave scars. Laser and phototherapy have good cosmetic results but are expensive. Isotretoin, a systemic acne drug with significant side effects, also has been shown in a small study to be effective. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am currently taking 20 mg of Xarelto daily, and have a screening colonoscopy scheduled soon. The preparation instructions said not to stop taking blood thinners, but didn’t specifically mention Xarelto. I contacted the office and spoke with a scheduler, who said those instructions applied to all blood thinners. Previously, I was told that I would need to go off of blood thinners for five

When it comes to condiments, I’m on Team Mayo! I know that there are folks who absolutely despise the flavor of mayonnaise, and others who can’t seem to live without it. For some reason, it seems that almost everything about mayonnaise — from its origin story to using it in desserts — sparks a heated debate. One origin story maintains that in 1756, French forces under the command of Duke de Richelieu laid siege to Port Mahon on the Mediterranean island of Minorca, now a part of Spain. This was the first European battle of the Seven Years’ War. The Duke’s chef couldn’t find cream to create a sauce, so he combined an egg and oil and called it “mahonnaise” in honor of Port Mahon. Other sources claim that the chef learned the recipe from the residents of the island. Mayonnaise is basically an emulsion of neutral-flavored oil like canola combined with an egg yolk, vinegar and/or lemon juice, and sometimes mustard for flavor and to help the emulsion stay blended. Some French chefs feel that mayonnaise is from a recipe called bayonnaise after Bayonne, a town famous across Europe for

its succulent hams. Others suggest the name came from “manier,” meaning “to handle,” or “moyeu,” an old French word for yolk. In the 1920s, a famous Spanish chef published a pamphlet claiming that the so-called French mayonnaise was really based on the Spanish salsa mahonesa recipe. While Spanish chefs may have created mayonnaise, the French increased its popularity by incorporating it into numerous early 19th century recipes, which spread from Europe to America. Mayonnaise has become an integral part of American food culture from sea to shining sea. Chefs and home cooks add mayo into all kinds of composed salads, fillings, spreads and dressings, and incorporate it outside and inside sandwiches and baked goods. You can add this creamy ingredient to both sweet and savory recipes without imparting any detectable mayo taste. Try these unique ways to use mayonnaise. Creamy Frosting: Stir in a spoonful of mayonnaise to your frosting recipe. It will remain creamy even after refrigeration. Memorable Mashed Potatoes: Use mayonnaise to increase the creaminess and flavor of mashed potatoes. For 1-1/2 pounds of mashed potatoes, stir in 1/2 cup of shredded Cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup mayonnaise and 1 teaspoon each of powdered garlic, salt and ground black pepper. Egg Wash Replacement:

1/2 cup oil in very slow thin stream, whisking constantly, until mayonnaise is thick, about 8 minutes (mayonnaise will be lighter in color). Cover and chill. Can be made up to 2 days ahead. Keep chilled. Makes about 3/4 cup.

You can use mayo anywhere you’d use an egg wash. Brush it on top of bread or pastry dough before baking, or put it on meats or seafood before breading, or on shrimp before coating with coconut. Crispier Fruit Crisps: Stir together a cup of flour and 3/4 cup of sugar with a 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Stir in 1/2 cup of mayo, then use the mixture as a topping for your favorite fruit crisp recipe. If you’ve never tried making your own mayonnaise, this delicious recipe is the perfect introduction!

ect details and deadlines more easily, even as the workday draws to a close. • Avoid the “quick fix.” Relying on a beverage or snack to provide a quick mental boost may end up compromising your mental sharpness. Foods and beverages that are high in sugar may provide an immediate energy boost, but that spike is almost instantly followed by a crash that can adversely affect your mental sharpness. Stick to healthy snacks, such as fruits and vegetables, and avoid late afternoon cups of coffee, which studies have shown make it harder to fall asleep at night, thereby compromising your energy levels the next day. • Take a walk outdoors.

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl until well-blended. Cover and chill. Can be made up to 2-days ahead. Keep chilled. Makes 1/4 cup. MAYO VARIATIONS DIJON MAYO: 3/4 cup

HOMEMADE MAYONNAISE Mayonnaise can be made by hand with a whisk or a fork, or with the aid of an electric mixer or blender on low speed. •1 teaspoon large egg yolk, room temperature •1-1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice •1 teaspoon white wine vinegar •1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard, room temperature •1/2 teaspoon salt plus

Stay mentally fresh during the work day Energy levels tend to ebb and flow throughout a typical workday. A cup of coffee may provide some caffeine-infused spark in the morning, but a big lunch can squash energy later in the afternoon. Waning mental sharpness as the workday progresses can compromise productivity, making it more difficult for workers to complete projects on time. That, in turn, can contribute to stress. In fact, in its “2017 Stress in America” survey, the American Psychological Association found that 58 percent of Americans say work is a significant source of stress. Staying mentally fresh during a workday can pay a host of benefits, and the following are just a few ways to maintain mental focus until quitting time. • Exercise regularly. The physical benefits of routine exercise are well documented. But even the most ardent fitness enthusiasts may not realize just how big an impact physical activity is having on their brains. The Harvard Medical School notes that exercise stimulates regions of the brain that release a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which rewires memory circuits so they can function better. A stronger memory can help workers recall proj-

SECRET SAUCE •1/4 cup mayonnaise •1-1/2 teaspoons spicy pickle juice •1-1/2 teaspoons ketchup •1 teaspoon yellow mustard •1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika •1/4 teaspoon garlic powder •1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Spending some time outdoors during a lunch break, or even a quick, post-lunch stroll around the office grounds, can provide a break for the brain. That break can help the brain refocus, improving productivity as a result. One great way to get outdoors during busy workdays is to conduct meetings outside when the weather permits. This gives everyone a chance to recharge their brains in the great outdoors, and few people would prefer a dusty conference room to a nearby park or picnic area outdoors. Various strategies can help working professionals maintain their mental sharpness throughout the workday.

(NC) — As we age, we come to appreciate the simpler things in life whether it’s playing with grandkids, taking up a hobby or finding more time for a good book. Whatever activity brings you joy, don’t let the loss of vision affect your independence. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of poor vision in Canadians over the age of 60 and one of the leading causes of vision loss. While peripheral vision is usually unaffected, people with AMD lose the sharp, straightahead vision used for driving, reading, recognizing faces, and looking at detail. Though AMD doesn’t always lead to complete blindness, it can sometimes significantly impair simple daily activities. Over time, the areas of vision loss may grow larger

or denser or you may develop blank spots in your central vision. If detected at an early stage, there are treatments that can decrease AMD’s rate of progression. You can take steps to prevent or reduce vision loss with these tips from the Canadian Ophthalmological Society: • Get regular comprehensive medical eye exams. People over age 65 should get an exam at least once every two years. • Quit smoking. Smokers are twice as likely to develop AMD compared with a non-smoker. • Know your family’s eye health history. Before you go in for your next eye exam, speak with your family about their eye health history, as it may prompt your ophthalmolo-

Try something new with sweet potato chorizo mole Traditional mole sauce typically gets some of its depth from the addition of bittersweet chocolate. This recipe for “Sweet Potato Chorizo Mole” from Joy Manning and Tara Mataraza Desmond’s “Almost Meatless” (Ten Speed Press) utilizes bittersweet chocolate as well. The result is a flavorful dish that’s sure to please.

oil

Sweet Potato Chorizo Mole Serves 4 to 6 •2 teaspoons vegetable

•4 ounces (about 2 links) chorizo sausage •1/2 small onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice (about 1/2 cup) •2 cloves garlic, minced

(about 1 tablespoon) •2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano leaves, or 1 teaspoon dried •1 - 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes, juices strained and reserved, tomatoes chopped •1-1⁄2 teaspoons ground cumin •1 tablespoon ancho chile powder •1 ounce bittersweet chocolate, chopped (about 2 tablespoons) •1 cup fresh or frozen corn, or 1 - 11-ounce can, drained •1-1⁄2 cups dried black beans, cooked, or 1 15-ounce can, drained and rinsed •2⁄3 cup water •Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

•2 limes, cut into wedges, for garnish •Cilantro sprigs for garnish

•1-1⁄2 pounds yellow or orange sweet potatoes, peeled and cut lengthwise into 1⁄8-inch slices, or in disks •8 ounces Cheddar cheese, shredded •1 avocado, sliced, for garnish

Preheat the oven to 375 F. Brush a 9 by 13-inch baking dish lightly with oil. To prepare the tomato mixture, heat the oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Slice the surface of the sausages lengthwise to remove the meat from the casings. Crumble the meat into the hot pan and sauté for about 5 minutes, breaking it up further as it cooks and begins to brown. Add the onion and sauté for 2 minutes. Add the garlic and oregano and cook for 30 seconds more. Pour the reserved tomato juices into the pan to

deglaze, scraping the bits from the bottom. Add the chopped tomatoes, cumin, chile powder, and chocolate. Stir to combine while the chocolate melts. Add the corn and black beans, reduce the heat to medium, and allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir in the water. Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper if necessary. Meanwhile, to assemble and cook, spread onethird of the sweet potatoes on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, overlapping the slices. Scoop half the tomato mixture (a heaping cup) and spread evenly across the first layer of potatoes. Top with one-third of the shredded

cheese. Repeat this layering process, ending with a layer of potatoes. Reserve the last third of the cheese. Once assembled, cover with foil, pushing it onto the surface of the top layer, and bake for 1 to 11⁄2 hours, until potatoes are fork tender (yellow sweet potatoes tend to take longer). Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining third of the cheese atop the potatoes. Bake for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest for at least 10 minutes to allow the layers to set up. Cut and serve with avocado and lime wedges. Garnish with cilantro as desired.

Fulfill your chocolate cake fix from home Few desserts inspire the devotion of chocolate cake. Even people who may not consider themselves chocolate lovers no doubt enjoy a piece of chocolate cake. While many people may reserve their chocolate cake indulgence for nights out on the town, those who don’t want to wait until their next date night to fulfill their chocolate fix can get in their kitchens and prepare this recipe for “Chocolate Cardamom Truffle Cake” from Maxine Clark’s “Chocolate” (Ryland, Peters & Small).

from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t

melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes — this will give the cake a lovely airy tex-

ture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice

grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.

Chocolate Cardamom Truffle Cake Serves 10 to 12 Amaretti Base •5 ounces amaretti •1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter •5 tablespoons sugar Cardamom Truffle Filling •21⁄3 cups heavy cream •4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them •25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated •1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed •4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur Cardamom Cocoa Sugar •3 green cardamom pods •1/4 cup sugar •1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa •1 - 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove

Helping kids adust to starting daycare Children reach many milestones throughout their lives. While a child’s first step and first tooth may garner the bulk of the milestone glory, other moments are just as significant. One milestone that parents may not look forward to is their kids’ first day away from mom and dad. For many children, that day is spent at daycare. Parents may get emotional when dropping their young children off at daycare for the first time, and

those emotions might only grow stronger if children cry when Mom and Dad walk away. Fortunately, there are ways to help kids adjust to starting daycare. • Drop by before the first dropoff day. Many daycare facilities encourage parents to visit the facility with their children before youngsters’ first official day at daycare. This allows kids to meet their teachers as well as other children who will be in their class. That familiarity can make first-day dropoff that much

easier. • Speak with kids about daycare in advance of their first day. As kids’ first day at daycare approaches, parents can speak with them about what to expect. Discuss changes in routine as well as more exciting things, like the chance to play with other kids. If you were able to visit before the first day, mentions teachers and other children your child met during the visit. That can help calm their nerves about leaving Mom and

Dad. • Practice leaving your child with someone else. Much of the fear kids have when being dropped off at daycare for the first time is seeing mom or dad leave the facility. Kids who have seen this before, whether they’re left with a babysitter or a relative for a couple of hours, are more likely to smoothly adjust to being left at daycare. Parents who haven’t yet enjoyed a date night or time away from their children can book some time

away together so their children can get used to spending time with someone other than Mom and Dad. • Invite other children from the daycare over for play dates. Another way to help kids embrace their first days at daycare is to invite some of their prospective classmates over for a play date. If parents who live nearby recommended the facility, invite their children over for a play date. Familiar, friendly faces

can help the transition to daycare go smoothly. • Let kids take a comfort item with them. A favorite blanket or stuffed animal can calm kids’ nerves as they transition to daycare. Before telling kids they can bring such an item along, confirm if it’s allowed with the program director. The first day at daycare is a milestone for kids. Parents can take various steps to make that day go as smoothly as possible.

Trouble losing weight? This might be why (NC) — We used to think that body weight was only determined by how much you eat, how many calories you burn while working out, and living. But while it’s true that these factors

matter, this equation is an overly simplistic understanding of the factors that influence body weight. We all know somebody who can eat whatever they want and never exercise

while still maintaining a lower bodyweight. We likely know at least one other person who diets and exercises regularly, but for some reason is still defending a higher body weight. We need to look beyond the simple equation of calories in and calories out. There are many biological and psychological factors involved in maintaining a healthy weight. Some of these can be changed and others cannot, so understanding the different factors can go a long way towards helping you successfully manage your weight. “Many blame themselves because they are unable to manage their weight,” explains Sandra Elia, food addiction counsellor. “Blaming isn’t the solution. It’s important to recognize that there are factors beyond our control.

I encourage my patients who struggle with excessive weight to stop blaming themselves and to create an internal environment that is kind, gentle and nurturing.” Obesity is a medically recognized chronic disease that is difficult to treat and requires a longterm treatment plan that extends beyond simple will power. Lifestyle changes are important, but

prescription medication can also help and a healthcare team to surround the patient is critical. Social, environmental and cultural factors play a role. For example, the increasing number of foodrelated online apps and fast food restaurants in our neighborhoods make unhealthy foods easily accessible and available at a relatively low cost. Behavioural factors

are also important. These include our dietary habits, our understanding of nutrition, our levels of activity, mood and other emotional factors. Sleep patterns, coping strategies, time and stress management all play a role in weight control as well. If you’re having trouble losing weight, speak to your doctor and find more information at controlyourappetite.ca.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is your take on using CBD oil on cats or dogs? A friend told me that giving it as a supplement could ease my dog’s separation anxiety. — Gary F., Tallahassee, Florida DEAR GARY: While there is no solid scientific proof indicating that CBD (cannabinoid), a nonintoxicating part of the marijuana plant, has an effect on pets, you can find quite a bit of anecdotal evidence from pet owners. Most are

very confident that the supplement helps calm their dog or cat. I’ve spoken with a few pet owners who have had positive experiences supplementing their pet’s diet with CDB, which can be obtained legally over the counter in several states. For example, a friend was struggling with anxietyinduced aggression in one of her dogs — during thunderstorms, he would begin snarling and snapping at her other male dog. Daily supplementation with CBD oil has reduced the aggression, she says. Now, CBD oil isn’t a cure-all to treat every health or behavioral issue affecting a pet. It can help with anxiety. Its effects seem to be very subtle, on par with Bach’s Rescue

Remedy, a daily homeopathic supplement. But it’s not a substitute for behavioral training and regular outdoor exercise — both of which can have a profound effect on a dog’s behavior. CBD supplements like oil or chews can be given daily at feeding time. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the package. The key seems to be making the supplements a daily routine, and increasing the dose may not work. But for owners trying to improve their dog’s wellbeing, it may be a supplement worth trying. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

ake of the Prairies is a large, long lake situated in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Originally, the lake was created as a water storage lake to manage the risk of flooding elsewhere. A great fishery has been an added bonus. Lake of the Prairies supports a high quality walleye fishery. In fact, Lake of the Prairies is now considered the second largest fishery in Manitoba, and one of the best walleye fisheries in Canada.

Rock bass can be an underrated fishery. While they aren’t huge, rock bass can be fun to catch, and they will often bite when other species won’t. This can make them a terrific fish for kids to catch. They tend to go after things that are flashy and active, and you may find that you catch rock bass when you’re going after pike, and vice versa.

“How and what to use depends on the time of year and weather conditions,” he advises.

Carp are also present in Lake of the Prairies, though they tend to feed less in the winter, which can be challenging for ice anglers. If carp are what you’re after, try fishing in warmer water. Typically, they will be more active in warm water. Much like bass, they can be easier to catch when the water is warm.

John Boyd, from For Your Walleyes Only, says that how you fish Lake of the Prairies will change depending on several factors.

They love minnows, shrimp and night crawlers. Minnows work best in cooler water, and night crawlers in warmer water. For ice fishing, try to set up over or near underwater structure such as rocks or weedy areas. Lake of the Prairies has plenty of that, and ice fishing for perch should make for a day of good action.

Of course, the big draw in Lake of the Prairies is walleye. There are several species of fish in Lake of the Prairies, walleye being the most popular.

water with simple jigging techniques. Sometimes, the bigger perch will be down deeper, but not always. Perch tend to school, so that where you catch one, you are likely to catch others.

If it’s windy, while it may not be ideal conditions for anglers, it’s perfect for walleye. They’re far more active in wavy water, and in anything murky. They’re very sensitive to light, and wind, sediment and low light conditions are easier for them to manage.

Boyd says that on windy days, bottom bouncers and spinners with leeches or night crawlers are good. That’s not to say that walleye can’t be caught on calm days. “On a calm day, trolling using Rapellas can be an option,” Boyd suggests.

“I prefer vertical jigging using 1/8 oz chartreuse, orange, green or pink jigs with frozen minnows, leeches or crawlers.” Boyd notes that underwater factors are important, too. “Structure plays a key role, and at Lake of the Prairies you have some great options.”

Our Pro Shop has all the fishing gear one man can fit in his boat. We also issue fishing licenses.

work for them. Slow cookers cook foods on a low temperature over several hours. Slow cookers do not require constant attention, making them ideal for people who want to prep meals before leaving the house and then return to a hot meal in the evening. Many foods, from breakfasts to appetizers to desserts, can be prepared with slow cookers. But slow cookers are perhaps best suited for hearty meals, such as this recipe for “Creamy

Ham ‘n’ Broccoli” from “Casseroles, Slow Cooker & Soups” (RDA Enthusiast Brands) by Taste of Home editors.

CREAMY HAM ‘N’ BROCCOLI Serves 6-8 •3 cups cubed, fully cooked ham •1 - 10-ounce package frozen •chopped broccoli, thawed •1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted •1 jar processed cheese sauce •1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained •1-1⁄4 cups uncooked

instant rice •1 cup milk •1 celery rib, chopped •1 medium onion, chopped •1⁄8 to 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper •1⁄2 teaspoon paprika In a 3-quart slow cooker, combine the first 10 ingredients. Cover and cook on high for 2 to 3 hours, or until the rice is tender. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika.

Try something simple and new this grilling season Grilling is many people’s preferred method of cooking, perhaps because it combines the great outdoors with delicious food. When grilling, many people are comfortable sticking with traditional backyard barbecue fare, such as hot dogs and hamburgers. But those who want to expand their grilling horizons can try the following simple recipe for “Grilled Chicken and Onion Skewers” from Amy Kaneko’s “Let’s Cook Japanese Food!” (Chronicle Books). GRILLED CHICKEN & ONION SKEWERS Makes 10 to 12 skewers Basting Sauce (optional) •1/2 cup soy sauce •1/4 cup mirin

•2 tablespoons sugar •1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, excess fat removed and cut into bite-size pieces •1 yellow onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, and/or baby leeks, white part only, cut into 1-inch lengths •1 tablespoon canola or other neutral oil •Salt (optional) Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dis-

solved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer

in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill. Serve the skewers piping hot.

makes about 2 cups mustard butter) For the ham: •1-1⁄2 cups packed dark brown sugar •1⁄4 cup brandy •2 tablespoons grainy mustard •1 - 5-pound bone-in, half ham, fully cooked •1-1⁄2 teaspoons whole cloves In a small saucepan, stir to combine the brown sugar, brandy and mustard. Bring the mixture to a boil over mediumhigh heat and, stirring constantly, cook until the glaze is thick and syrupy, about 3 minutes. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or use immediately. Preheat the oven to 325 F. Line a shallow roasting

pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Score the fat on top of the ham by making diagonal cuts in a diamond pattern. Insert the cloves into the intersections of each diamond. Place the ham on the rack. Insert a meat thermometer, making sure it doesn’t touch the bone. Bake the ham for about 1 hour, or until the thermometer registers 125 F. Remove the ham and brush on the brandy glaze. Return the ham to the oven and cook for 20 to 30 minutes more, or until the thermometer registers 135 F. Let it stand for 15 minutes. (The meat temperature will rise to 140 F). For the mustard butter: •2 cups butter, softened •1⁄4 cup grated sweet onion •1⁄4 cup Dijon or Creole mustard In a medium bowl, stir to combine the butter, sweet onion and mustard. Scrape it into a serving bowl. Cut the ham into thin slices and build your sandwiches (or serve slices on their own on a platter). Offer with accompanied bowl of mustard butter.

Revamp your classic mac and cheese (NC) — If you thought macaroni and cheese couldn’t get better, prepare your taste buds for the flavour experience of a lifetime. Mushrooms, pulled pork and cheese make for a great take on a classic meal. The recipe was made in partnership with Mushrooms Canada and Ontario Pork. PULLED PORK MAC AND CHEESE WITH MUSHROOMS Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 8 hours Serves: 6 to 8 • Pulled Pork: • 1/2 lb. mushrooms, finely chopped • 2-3 lb. (0.9–1.3 kg) pork shoulder • 1 cup (250 mL) root beer • 1 cup (250 mL) of barbecue sauce • Salt and pepper • Mac and Cheese: • 1 lb. (500 g) fresh mixed mushrooms (portabella, shiitake, oyster), coarsely chopped

• 2 tbsp (30 mL) olive oil • 3 cups (750 mL) rigatoni pasta (cooked until al dente) • 3 cups (750 mL) milk • 1/2 large onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 1/2 tbsp (7 mL) Italian herbs • 2 tbsp (30 mL) butter • 2 tbsp (30 mL) flour • 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard • 3 cups (750 mL) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded • 1/4 cup (60 mL) chopped cilantro • Salt and pepper, to taste Season all sides of pork with salt and pepper. Place in slow cooker with root beer and barbecue sauce. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. Remove pork from slow cooker to drain liquid. Place back in slow cooker and, using a fork or tongs, shred pork and remove excess fat. Add more barbecue sauce if you wish. Cover and return

to low. Place chopped mushrooms on a large baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil. Roast mushrooms in a 400°F oven for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway through. Set aside. In a large pot, cook pasta until al dente. Set aside. In a large pot com-

bine milk, onion, garlic, and Italian herbs; bring to a simmer for 10 minutes, allowing for flavours to steep. Pour through a strainer and return to pot. In another large saucepan, melt butter and whisk in flour to make a roux. Slowly begin to whisk in seasoned milk; this will make a paste. Continue

whisking until all milk has been added. Whisk over medium-low heat until sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Add mustard, salt and pepper. Transfer cooked pasta to a large casserole dish. Mix in roasted mushrooms, cheese and sauce. Top with approximately 3 cups of pulled pork (the

rest can be reserved). Bake at 350°F (175°C) until cheese is completely melted, approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro. Find more ways to add fabulous flavour to your meals at mushrooms.ca.

Dialysis can fill the gaps of kidney function The kidneys perform a host of essential functions in the body. When the kidneys cannot do their job, kidney failure will have to be mitigated with treatment that often includes dialysis. Some people may be familiar with the term

“dialysis,” but not fully understand the process. Anyone with chronic kidney disease or those caring for a loved one facing the situation can get the facts. Role of the kidneys The kidneys are respon-

Dealing with stress when you have health issues (NC) — No one likes to deal with stress. But this unavoidable part of life can be even more difficult for people living with chronic health conditions, as stress can cause symptoms to flare up or worsen. For a better grasp on daily stress, check out these quick tips: Understand your condition. It can be empowering to learn everything you can about your illness and treatment options, restoring a sense of control and ownership over your body. Check out patient organizations and your local library, and make sure anything you read online is from a reputable source, like a research hospital. Manage your emotions. Whether you’re stressing out about a big project at work or the news an upcoming doctor’s visit will reveal, it’s important to take time to help mitigate any negative feelings and the effects on your mind and body. You can do this by eating healthier,

sticking to a regular sleep schedule and being more active. Even if your condition keeps you from doing a tough workout at the gym, you can go for a long walk, practice low impact sports and do gentle stretches. Enjoy your leisure time. It can be hard to unwind when you have to worry about taking medication or monitoring yourself, like when you have diabetes. In fact, threequarters of people living with diabetes rarely/never go out on weekdays, and 34 per cent experience a high level of stress when being invited for a drink with friends. Fortunately, smart tools like mySugr, an app create by people living with diabetes for people living with diabetes and the Accu-Chek Guide System featuring a uniquely designed test strip with a wider dosing area, work together to help reduce the hassle of every day blood glucose testing and can make testing on the go a breeze. mated 5. sible for ridding the body of unwanted toxins, waste products and excess fluids by filtering the blood, offers Fresenius Kidney Care. Every day, the kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood to sift out about 2 quarts of waste products and extra water, states WebMD. When the kidneys fail, they cannot do this properly and the important chemical balance of the body can be disrupted. Over time, waste and toxins can build up in the body and that can potentially prove lifethreatening. The kidneys also are responsible for making a hormone that tells bone

marrow to make red blood cells. These cells are essential for carrying oxygen from the lungs to areas of the body. When the kidneys fail The National Kidney Foundation says people with chronic kidney disease, or CKD, that reaches end stage renal disease (kidney failure) require life-preserving treatment. Kidney function tests will keep track of the progression of the disease and alert doctors to when CKD has reached a point where intervention is necessary. This is when dialysis is often recommended.

Understanding dialysis There are two types of dialysis: 1. Hemodialysis: This is a system by which the blood is put through an external filter, cleaned and then returned to the body. It can occur at a dialysis facility or at home. A doctor has to access blood vessels with a fistula or graft to enable this artificial kidney, hemodialyzer, to work. 2. Peritoneal dialysis: According to WebMD, during this process, the blood is cleaned inside of the body by way of a special fluid, known as a dialysate, and put in the abdomen through a catheter to

absorb waste from blood that passes through vessels in the abdominal cavity. The fluid remains there for several hours before being drained into a bag. This is called an exchange, advises NKF. This type of dialysis is typically done at home. Dialysis can take up to four hours to complete and may occur two to three times per week. It can help replace some of the function of healthy kidneys but cannot cure kidney disease. Dialysis will have to continue for life unless a patient receives a kidney transplant.
