Aerial photos a look at past farmsteads By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Aerial photographs have been taken of Canadian farmsteads for

decades. The resulting accumulation of negatives and contact sheets still exists, meaning the material is both an historic resource,

and a place for families to glimpse their agrarian past. Kim Bessette of Homestead Aerial Photos Ltd. explained he and his

wife bought the assets of the company that has been doing aerial photographing of farms across Canada, with a focus on the Prairies in 1993. “Not only did they photograph everywhere … they kept every photo in stock,” he explained. “That’s a library of about one and a half million

negatives and proofs.” Bessette said they have put a lot of time and effort into preserving the material that dates back to 1953, although the material for the local region likely dates back to 1955. The material is still available for people to get a copy of an old photo. In fact June 14 and 15

Homestead Aerial will be in Yorkton at the Parkland Mall with a large selection of material focused on the region. “What we’re going to bring covers a pretty large area,” he said, estimating it will include material taken over an area of about “100 square mile radius of Yorkton.” The Yorkton stop will be a prelude to attending the Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina later in June. Bessette said people can stop by and look through files of about 36 proofs roughly based around land descriptions and can order from what they find. He added the vast majority of material is in black and white, colour not coming into use until the 1980s. He said previous to that anyone wanting colour got a painted black and white picture. While the majority of the collection is of farmyards, Bessette said rural school yards, churches and elevators were often photographed as the airplanes travelled the countryside. That said, not everything was photographed either. “We’re at the mercy of what they shot,” he said. Today Bessette said they still do custom aerial photography of farmsteads, but utilizing a drone rather than a full size aircraft.

Education in connecting with farm past By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Each spring the The Rama Performing Arts and Leisure Society (PALS) hosts a field day where the planting of a crop is still carried out using horses. This year’s event was held May 18 and 19, with events including rope making, skidding, stone boat races, and chore team obstacle driving. Twylla Newton raises Clydesdale horses just south of Yorkton. She said the Rama event is a great way to connect with the past. “It is a really unique opportunity to work with the horse drawn farming equipment that was used not so long ago,” she told Yorkton This Week. “The

fellow teamsters that have a vast experience with actually using this horse drawn equipment are so helpful to those of us wanting to try it out. I only play farming with my team for a day, and I am beat! To imagine that that is what happened day after day is exhausting!” Kristina Just is a realitively new teamster from the Orkney area. She said an event such as the one in Rama is about learning in her case. “Attending events such as Rama ... It is a place to learn from very experienced teamsters who have been working with horses all of their lives,” she said. “These people have become great friends so it is a place were we can visit and share stories as well.”

The key lesson is that as the driver you are very much working with the team of horses you are driving, said Just. “Working with horses, the team become an extension of their driver,” she said. “Working with them is like working with a family member or coworker. “I find it challenging, rewarding, relaxing and a very healthy way to live. My teams are used on the farm to help feed cattle. I do it because I am blessed to be able to and it is fun.” Newton said the group at Rama, does a great job of preserving a part of our heritage. “I’m very thankful that the PALS organization in Rama puts on this field day event,” she said.

Lacrosse festival builds player skills By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer A lacrosse festival held in Yorkton over the weekend was a huge success. “It’s getting bigger every year,” offered Adam Stewart one of the organizers and a coach with the local Yorkton Fighting Pikes organization. “The last two years it’s really taken off.” This year the festival saw five fields being utilized at Crosthwaite Park with teams across a number of age groups. Teams involved in the event included host Yorkton, along with Prince Albert, Kelvington, Sturgis, Estevan, and Regina. Stewart said locally numbers are growing in part because they now offer programming as early as an under eight team. “Back when I was young we didn’t have the young age groups,” said Stewart, adding having players able to start younger builds a foundation for the program. It also helps that the teams are not in a formal

league, but instead play in a festival format in different communities over the season. The festival format allows teams to evolve over the season, said Stewart. For example in the under

eight group there are 22 players registered in Yorkton, which is enough to field two teams, but they practice as a group, and then are split into teams, the rosters changing from week-to-week as they head

to a festival. “I really like the festival format,” he said, adding it puts more focus on skill development than in wins and losses that can become the focus in a points-based league.

“You can afford to lose a game.” Stewart said they are building toward a goal with events like the one held in Yorkton, at least at the three oldest divisions, and that is a provincial crown. The Fighting Pikes will send teams in all three divisions to the provincial tournament to be hosted in Sturgis June 14-16. Looking at the under-

15 Fighting Pikes Stewart said they have a real shot at winning the provincial title. “It is a very strong team,” he said, adding many of the players have been together for three years, often playing against older teams which has helped with skill development. “ ... And, we’ve been pretty successful. Our younger groups are always very strong.”

tic comedies, they sure did make a cute one. Isn’t it ironic?

“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” (PG) — Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless return in the third of the animated series. Hiccup is now grown, and together with Astrid (America Fererra) and the rest of his pals, remains in charge of the dragon/man clan that is Berk, an island paradise that is rapidly being overrun with liberated dragons. A new threat appears, but so too does the yang to Toothless’ yin — a female Light Fury. As the goofy, super-adorable black dragon explores his feelings, a plan is hatched to move the whole group to the legendary Hidden

Scene from “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”. Island, a mythical place where dragons can be free. Both dragon and rider will finally have their destiny revealed, and the path is emotional — this is the rare threequel with heart and a wonderfully fulfilling story. “Isn’t It Romantic” (PG13) — Rebel Wilson plays a New York City architect,

Natalie, who’s got a cynical view of romance: To wit, it’s nonsense and not for gals like her. After an encounter with a subway mugger leaves her unconscious, she wakes up in an imaginary world where she’s the star of the PG-13 show — musical numbers, censored curse words and all. How does she get back

to the real world, and with a handsome billionaire suitor (Liam Hemsworth), does she really want to? It’s refreshingly funny, and re-teams Wilson with “Pitch Perfect” love interest Adam Devine, who plays Natalie’s best friend Josh. Both have great comedic timing, and for all the poking fun at roman-

“The Upside” (PG-13) — Recently paroled and on the prowl for work (or trying to look like it), Dell (Kevin Hart) interviews for a position as caregiver to quadriplegic billionaire Phil (Bryan Cranston). He gets the job, and grudgingly takes it, and the two begin an unfolding friendship under the watchful eye of Phil’s assistant Yvonne (Nicole Kidman). Through this friendship, both grow and influence the other. It’s a story that’s been told several times, most recently in 2011’s French film “The Intouchables.” Although Hart and Cranston — and in her own way Kidman — are big personalities who can do justice to both comedy and drama, the story lacks a certain zazzle. The messages are predictable,

but I think it’s still worth a watch. “Trading Paint” (R) — Father and son racers face adversity and a falling out when son Cam (Toby Sebastian) leaves dad Sam (John Travolta) to drive for a rival team headed by the slick Linsky (Michael Madsen). So, dad climbs behind the wheel once more to grind out the gears on his legend. I promise you’d have a funner 90 minutes in a car crash — it would probably be more exciting, and you wouldn’t have to hear Travolta’s Southern accent. said Mrs. Wasyliw, “we have had members of our Auxiliary with breast cancer and many of us have had family that have had to deal with breast cancer. We know how important this equipment is and how important early detection is so we are very supportive of The Health Foundation raising funds to ensure we have the best equipment possible for the breast cancer screening program at the Yorkton Regional Hospital.” “We are very grateful for the work the Canora Hospital Auxiliary does

CALVIN DANIELS my fingers and hands watching it with the awe only a child can have for something that has his attention. A quick web search for this article I was astounded to learn there are around 5000 species of this insect present all over the world. North America has more than 450 species of ladybugs. You could spend a fair amount of time just trying to see how many species you might find on a slow day fishing a local shoreline. There is an interesting U of Sask article at gardening.usask.ca/articlesinsects/ladybug.php on the

ladybug that would be of interest to gardeners in particular. While the ladybug is a beneficial bug, there were also ticks at Theodore Dam. After a morning of washing hooks without so much as a nibble for our efforts, we prepared to head home. At this time of year preparing to head home includes an additional step, that of a thorough tick check. While I am not as freaked out by ticks, as say my better half, who requires all clothes worn after fishing or disc golf go straight to the wash-

ing machine after turning home, I don’t like the annoying critters either. Generally ticks don’t seem to like me a whole lot. It might be because of a daily intake of garlic oil pills, or just dumb luck. That said a couple of years ago one settled onto my shin and was attached pretty good by the time it was noticed. I thought I had removed it cleanly but a couple of days later a hand sized area was slightly swollen, was red, and warm to the touch. It was off to the doctor for drugs to deal with the infection. At Theodore I had the morbid pleasure of plucking several off my jeans, releasing them on the end gate of the truck and dispatching them with definite malice under a handy stone found lying near by. So for a quick refresher course, ticks are generally out from early spring until October, particularly in tall grass, brush or wooded areas. Continued on Page A9

Seeding progress is quickly advancing across the province, thanks to very few disruptions in the weather and relatively good seeding conditions. Seventythree per cent of the crop is now seeded, up from 38 per cent last week and well ahead of the five-year average (2014-18) of 59 per cent for this time of year. Crops are slowly emerging, but are mostly in good condition despite the lack of moisture. The southwest region is the most advanced, with 84 per cent of the crop in the ground. Seventy-one per cent is seeded in the southeast, while 68 per cent of the crop is seeded in the east central region, 75 per cent in the west central region, 62 per cent in the north east and 68 per cent in the north west. Eighty per cent of the spring wheat, 84 per cent of the durum, 93 per cent of the lentils, 94 per cent of the peas, 63 per cent of the canola, 66 per cent of the barley and 55 per cent of the flax have now been seeded. Rainfall was reported this past week throughout the province, ranging from trace amounts to 23 mm in the Radville area. The majority of the province remains in need of rain to replenish the topsoil, as warm temperatures and strong winds continue to dry fields. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 44 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and 16 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 36 per cent adequate, 41 per cent short and 23 per cent very short. Hay and pasture growth has been slow due to little rainfall. Farmers are busy seeding and controlling weeds when winds are calm. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at www.saskatchewan.ca/crop-report. FISHING Continued from Page A6 “We want people to enjoy the summer weather, but it’s important to take precautions against ticks,” Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Denise Werker said in a recent government release. “It’s also important that after spending time outside to check yourself and your children and pets for ticks, and if you find a tick, remove it carefully and promptly.” The Ministry noted precautionary measures include: •Wear pants, longsleeved shirts and shoes that don’t show your feet. •Pull socks over your pant legs to prevent ticks from crawling up your legs. •Wear light-coloured clothes so ticks can be seen easily. •Use insect repellents that contain DEET or Icaridin. Apply repellent to clothes as well as your

skin. Always read and follow the directions. •Shower or bathe as soon as possible after being outside to wash off loose ticks. •Do “full body” tick checks after being outside on yourself, your children and your pets. If you find a tick attached to your skin: •Carefully remove it

with fine-tipped tweezers and grasp the mouth of the tick as close to the skin as possible. •Pull slowly upward and out with a firm steady pressure. •Be careful not to squeeze, crush or puncture the body after removal as this may also contain infectious fluids. The risk for Lyme dis-

ease – an infectious disease spread by blacklegged ticks - is low in Saskatchewan, but not zero. The release also noted; most ticks found in Saskatchewan are the American dog tick. This species is not capable of transmitting Lyme disease to people. Rocky Mountain

wood ticks and the winter tick (or moose tick) are also found in Saskatchewan. As of December 31, 2018, 28,899 ticks have been collected and identified in Saskatchewan and only 71 were black-legged ticks. Among these 71, only 10 black-legged ticks tested positive for the bacterium that causes Lyme disease,

said the release. For more information on ticks and Lyme disease, including how to submit a tick for Lyme disease testing, visit http://www.saskatchewan.ca/lyme As for fishing, well they say the third time’s a charm, so we will hope for better luck next time as we explore another shoreline.

Quickly gaining the reputation as one of Saskatchewan’s Best 9’s with 5 of 9 holes re-built in 1999 by Grant Golf of Winnipeg, Canora boasts two settings - tall poplar & evergreen fairways contrast into links style holes with knee high natural grass areas lining wide fairways. As well as the park like beauty of the golf course, a spectacular Parkland view opens up adjacent to 6 & 7 fairways including a pristine country church in the background. A practice range, practice green and putting green are also available to sharpen your game. Canora is located between Good Spirit Provincial Park, Duck Mountain Provincial Park & Crystal Lake Resort, and is a must to play for golf enthusiasts of all skill levels. Greens Superintendent, Peter Steranko, has done a yeoman job in getting the course and specifically the greens in great shape. The clubhouse, managed by Donna Rock, features a sun-drenched deck area with food and beverage service. The clubhouse also caters to non-golf events.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 74 and in general good health. He never washes his hands when he comes in from working as a public accountant. He doesn’t wash his hands when he sneezes, or after touching meat and poultry when he cooks. He smokes and is a functioning alcoholic. He says it’s not necessary to wash fruit before you eat it and tells me I don’t know

what I am talking about. He has been on Lipitor for several years and eats steak almost every night. On the other hand, I wash my hands when I come in from work and before preparing meals, and have always washed fruit before eating it. What’s his secret? Does he have strong genes? — T.M. ANSWER: Eating well and taking good care of yourself doesn’t guarantee a long, healthy life. The converse is true as well. I have heard so many stories about Aunt Martha (or Gertrude or Helen), who drank, smoked and lived on bacon until she was 105, but your lifestyle does give you a better chance at living longer and healthier, and of feeling better right now.

Smoking increases the risk of dying from any cause. A 74-year-old man who has smoked all his life has about the same risk of dying as an 82-year-old nonsmoker. One can do a similar risk analysis with diet. But some people, through a combination of good genes and good luck, manage to live long, healthy lives despite poor lifestyle choices. Even though some individuals will not have the expected outcome, smoking is still bad. So is eating steak every night. Washing (or at least rinsing) produce is a good idea. DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not

just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? — R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the

It was a day of treasure hunting in Saltcoats. The community held a town-wide garage sale Saturday, with a number of people taking part with driveway and garage sales which saw many people going from one sale to the next in search of all manner of bargains. The sales included a major plant sale hosted by the Saltcoats Beautification Committee as a fundraiser for its activities. The day also had other activities taking place in the community including starting things off with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Saltcoats Volunteer Fire Dept. The Lakeside Manor Care Home hosted a barbecue lunch, and the Laketown Leaders hosted pie and coffee in the Stirling Room.

HOLLYWOOD — Will Smith is reportedly being paid a whopping $35 million by Netflix for “Bright 2” (the original “Bright,” with Joel Edgerton, cost $90 million to make). That’s more than the busiest guy in movies, Dwayne Johnson, who makes $20 million per film. Will has a cameo in “Student of the Year 2” (now in theaters), but goes big and wide as

Meanwhile, Reynold’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” which earned $176 million, has spawned a sequel, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard,” with Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek (due in 2020). His latest film, the just-released “Pokeman Detective Pikachu,” is a big hit. When “Doctor Dolittle” opened in 1967 with Oscarwinner Rex Harrison (who was a big star), it was a flop that cost $17 million and earned only $9 million. Twentieth Century Fox was more successful in 2001 with Eddie Murphy (which cost $70 million and earned $176 million). Fox sold it to Universal Pictures for “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle” (out Jan. 17) and paid Robert Downey Jr. $20 million to play the man who can talk to animals. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There’s nothing an Aries Lamb likes less than having to tackle a humdrum task. But finding a creative way to do it can make all the difference. A more exciting time awaits you this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Finishing up a job on time leaves you free to enjoy your weekend without any Taurean guilt pangs. A romantic attitude from an unlikely source could take you by surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Moving in a new career direction might be seen by some as risky. But if you have both the confidence to see it through and the facts to back you up, it could prove rewarding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Holding back on a decision might be difficult, considering how long you’ve waited for this opportunity. But until you’re able to resolve all doubts, it could be the wiser course to take.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) You still need to move carefully where financial matters are concerned. Better for the Lion to move slowly than pounce on a “promising” prospect that doesn’t keep its promises. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A rejection of an idea you believe in can be upsetting. But don’t let it discourage you. Get yourself back on track and use what you’ve learned from the experience to try again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The early part of the week could find you looking to balance your priorities between your family obligations and your career responsibilities. Pressures begin to ease by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An associate’s problem could cause unavoidable delays in moving ahead with your joint venture. If so, use the time to look into another project you had previously

TRATTORIA-STYLE SHRIMP FETTUCCINE Classic and quite simple to prepare, this shrimp and pasta dish can be served on its own thanks to the bag of fresh spinach that gets incorporated at the last minute.

•12 ounces fettuccine or spaghetti •2 tablespoons olive oil •1 medium (6- to 8-ounce) onion, chopped •2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced •1/2 cup dry white wine •1 bottle (8-ounce) clam juice •Salt •1 pound shelled and deveined large shrimp, with tail part of shell left on if you like •1 bag (5- to 6-ounce) baby spinach •1/3 cup (loosely packed) fresh parsley leaves, chopped

set aside. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although a financial problem could be very close to being resolved in your favor, it’s still a good idea to avoid unnecessary spending for at least a little while longer. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Support for some unwelcome workplace decisions begins to show up, and continues to build, so that by week’s end, the gregarious Goat is as popular as ever. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. Deciding to attend a social function you might have earlier tried to avoid could turn out to be one of the best decisions you’ve made in a long time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into a new situation could prove to be a more difficult experience than you expected. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice in coping with some of the more irksome challenges. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong sense of duty makes you a valued and trusted member of your community. Have you considered a career in law enforcement?

canceled by FOX after just one season. It debuted on a Friday night, which isn’t the best night to lure in regular viewers. I agree that it was different from other crime procedurals in that it focused on a hot topic in the news nowadays — exonerating those imprisoned for a crime they didn’t commit. Another thing that might have worked against the show was the unrecognizable names of the leads. While they’re great actors, Rachelle Lefevre and Russell Hornsby aren’t household names. As for “Gone,” it debuted this past February on WGN America as a 12-episode limited series starring Chris Noth (“Law & Order”) and Levin Rambin (“All My Children”). As a limited series, it could return for a second season with the same cast or a new one, or not return at all. I agree it would fit in with the other crime shows on the main networks, but it’s possible they passed on the show when it was originally shopped around. Q: Is “Whiskey Cavalier” going to be back this fall? Despite its silly name, I

to cancel it reportedly came down to the wire, and the network chose to focus on a new series in its time slot this fall called “Emergence.”

Allison Tolman really like the show. — P.P. A: I have to deliver more bad news. “Whiskey Cavalier” has been canceled after just one season. ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said at a recent press event that they “gave it a very strong launch in spring, but we lost audience. ... We looked for other time slots but did not see a real opportunity to grow.” “Whiskey Cavalier” was heavily promoted by ABC and even premiered after the Oscars. The dramedy starred Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan as two rival investigators. The decision

Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind “Whiskey Cavalier,” is trying to get another network or platform like Netflix to pick it up. Canceled shows have more opportunities to be revived than ever before, so there’s a good chance you’ll see it again. They might tinker with it some, maybe add another big name to the cast, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the show had a new home come next year. As for its replacement on ABC, “Emergence” stars Allison Tolman (“Fargo”) as a police chief who takes in a child she found at the site of an accident. The child has no recollection of the accident and then the mystery unfolds. ABC has high hopes for “Emergence” after snatching it up when NBC decided to pass on the pilot. Having a dog improves your health (NC) — Coming home after a long and stressful day and being greeted by a wagging tail, you instantly feel happier. Not only does your own experience show this, but so does research. Scientific evidence shows that having a dog in your family improves your health and well-being. Here are some of the ways your canine companion is improving your wellbeing:

• More exercise: Research shows that people living with a dog walk more than others – approximately 20 minutes more per day – resulting in lower blood pressure and cholesterol. • Relaxation: Spending time with your animal and petting them is an instant de-stressor. It releases feel-good hormones like serotonin and oxytocin, while lowering the stress

hormone cortisol. • Social interaction: Pets can help you connect with other people, whether a new neighbour strikes up a conversation about your dog, or you get to know the regulars at the dog park. • Sense of purpose: Even if you don’t want to get up in the morning, your dog jumping on the bed wanting to go outside is a motivator. With this sense of belonging and value, those who have dogs are generally happier, more trusting and less lonely. • Longer life: Various studies have shown that those with furry friends live longer than those without, likely due to the exercise and the close bond developed. Your dog improves your health, so it’s important for you to protect theirs. One potential health danger for both humans and canines is parasites, such as fleas, ticks and worms. Talk to your veterinary team about an all-inone option that protects your dog, and your family, against both internal and external parasites. Auctions

Students learn film first-hand By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Student Day has long been part of the Yorkton Film Festival, and it was again held Thursday hosted by Sacred Heart High School in the city. Each year, the Festival focuses on educating youths from across the province by connecting them with content development mentors. The event is a day of hands-on instructive learning for Yorkton and area students; who spent the day shooting, editing, and learning the finer points of what it takes to make a film going from storyboard to screen. The hands-on work is carried out under the tutelage of veteran directors, producers, editors, and writers. One of those instructors was Shane Metcalfe with ISEE Motion Picture Company in Saskatoon. Melcalfe said while it is only his second year being involved with Student Day he has long been a supporter of the Yorkton

festival having attended his first festival when he was 20, adding he is now 46. “I just want to support the film industry. I want to see a bigger and better film industry in Saskatchewan,” he said. That is where Metcalfe feels Student Day is an important element of the festival. “It’s showing them, (students) there are options. Not everyone has to work in the resource sector, or agriculture,” he said. Student Day is designed to give participants a taste of the varied carrers connected to the film festival. Students were broken into groups to film a scene taken from two popular films, Napoleon Dynamite and The Breakfast Club. Students worked on the single scene for the day, the scenes being set up as much as possible as it would if it were an actual movie shoot. Students, based on their areas of interest were assigned specific areas of production: camera, sound, lights, directing, editing, etc. Metcalfe said that is one of

industry if they have an interest. Apparently the interest is growing. Metcalfe said this year some 40 students took place in the day. “That’s the highest attendance ever,” he said.

In general, Metcalfe said students know a lot going into a day like the one in Yorkton. “They’ve watched so many more motion pictures then we saw (as youth),” he said, adding that gives them insights into the

Crash survivor urges residents to keep STARS in the sky By Terry Jenson tjenson@ccgazette.ca On August 19, 2015, Chelsea Phillips’ life changed forever. After a day of drinking, Phillips and four close friends were involved in a horrific crash later that evening just outside her hometown of Biggar, Saskatchewan. Police investigation revealed the truck had been travelling 180 km/h when it left the road, struck an approach, and rolled numerous times. Two of her friends, including the driver who was impaired, died on the scene and another two were taken by road ambulance to hospital. Phillips, meanwhile, was found unresponsive but clinging to life a football field away from the wreckage and the decision was made by first responders to make the call to STARS – the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service. Standing between several flight paramedics, nurses and pilots – including the two on board the helicopter that night – Phillips told her story at the grand prize show home

in Saskatoon during the launch of the 2019 STARS Saskatchewan Lottery on Wednesday, May 15. Phillips was in hospital for four months and underwent 11 surgeries in the weeks that followed the crash. Doctors initially didn’t think she would make it through that first night and, if she did, believed she would never walk or talk again due to the severity of her injuries. But, not only did she survive, she beat the odds. The road to recovery has been long and, to this day, continues for Phillips. The crash and the years leading up to it have been erased. Gone are memories of her graduation four years previously, the marriage of her older sister, and the birth of her nephew. Now living in Saskatoon while many of her friends are still in Biggar, Phillips’ days consist of happily volunteering at Sherbrooke Community Centre and loves her job helping others. But, while she appears to be a happy, healthy young woman on the outside, she still suffers from the effects of the collision. “I find it annoying that

I still have to rely on my mom, my sister and my grandma to get me places,” she added, saying she gets frustrated not being able to live on her own. “I sometimes have difficulties finding the right words to use and I also have trouble paying attention and get distracted easily. I need an agenda and an alarm to remember days.” Phillips’ narrative is a touching one of how STARS saved her life, but there are hundreds of other VIPs – Very Important Patients – who have stories of their own in Saskatchewan. According to Cindy Seidel, Flight Nurse and Director of Provincial Operations for STARS Saskatchewan, the organization has flown 5,500 missions to over 500 communities since its inception in

2012. With helicopters and crews based in Saskatoon and Regina, STARS transports critically or seriously injured patients from scenes and also between hospitals and health centres when deemed necessary. “(Chelsea’s story) hits a little close to home for me as I’m from Biggar as well and Chelsea graduated with my son so this (crash) was certainly devastating for our small community,” Seidel explained afterwards, thanking Phillips for the courage to tell her story. This year’s STARS Lottery features two grand prize show homes – one in Saskatoon’s Greenbryre Estates worth $1.58 million and the other near Regina at Spruce Creek Estates in Pilot Butte with

a retail value of $1.57 million. In addition to trips, vehicles and cash, there are 2,004 more prizes to be won including electronics, jewelry, gift cards, and even an opportunity to take a sightseeing tour of Saskatchewan inside a STARS helicopter. As of May 15, the lottery was already close to 55 per cent sold out. Tickets are $60 each, two for $100, six for $250 or twelve for $375 and can be purchased in-person at either of the two grand prize show homes, online at starslotterysaskatchewan.ca, by mail at P.O. Box 1515, Regina, SK S4P 3C2, or by calling 1-844-STARS-SK (1-844-7827775). The early bird deadline for the opportunity to win the Ultimate Adventure Package or $225,000 cash is

A19

June 27 while the draw for the 50-50 jackpot, worth up to $875,000, will be made August 1. Tickets for the 50-50 are $10 each, five for $25 or fifteen for $50 and the deadline for ticket purchases is July 18. “I’m grateful to be alive, despite my struggles, and am thankful to have a second chance at life because of the quick work and expertise of all the local links in the chain of survival and my STARS flight crew,” Phillips said in her presentation. “I’m so thankful (STARS) was able to help me nearly four years ago. The only way STARS can stay in the sky and help other patients in need is through your support.
