Kirk sets long jump record at districts By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer It was a jump Drew Kirk will long remember. The Grade 12 student from Langenburg set a new district track meet record in long jump for his age category last Tuesday at 6.89 metres well beyond the previous mark of 6.46 metres. Kirk said he had not expected to jump as far as he did, but added he felt confident he’d come “pretty close” to the record. “I knew I could break the record.” The long jump was Kirk’s only event at the district meet hosted by Yorkton Regional High School Tuesday afternoon,
with events scheduled for Wednesday as well. Kirk said he used to run sprints, but with much of his time focused on volleyball – he will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall to play – he only competed in long jump this year. And, even in long jump his preparation was limited. When asked how much practice he put in the reply was “not a lot.” But his other endeav-
ours have helped in long jump. As a former sprinter Kirk said he gets some good speed in his run up to the jump. And, in volleyball jump-
ing at the net is a big part of sport, so that helped with his take off at the pit too, he said. The record is a good way to wrap up his high school jumping, although
he has one more meet ahead provincials in Moose Jaw.
“It feels really good to set the record and end on a good note,” he said.

96 per cent of the crop in the ground. Ninety-four per cent is seeded in the southeast, 91 per cent of the crop is seeded in the east central region, 92 per cent in the west central region, 90 per cent in the north east and 87 per cent in the north west. Rainfall was reported this past week throughout the province, ranging from
trace amounts to 75 mm in a localized area near Turtleford. Topsoil moisture conditions continue to deteriorate across the province due to strong winds and a lack of moisture. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 32 per cent adequate, 48 per cent short and 20 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay
land and pasture is rated as 25 per cent adequate, 47 per cent short and 28 per cent very short. Significant rain is still needed across the province to help crops emerge and for hay land and pasture to establish. Hay and pasture growth has been slow due to little rainfall. Provincially, pasture conditions are rated as 17 per
cent good, 37 per cent fair, 32 per cent poor and 14 per cent very poor. Crop growth is delayed in much of the province, and most crops are behind their normal developmental stages for this time of year. The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lack of moisture, frost, strong winds, hail, and insects such as flea
beetles and cutworms. Farmers are completing seeding operations and starting in-crop pesticide applications. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at www. saskatchewan.ca/cropreport. Follow the 2019 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture

PARKLAND MINOR BASEBALL LEAGUE
CONTINUES TO GROW THE GAME OF BASEBALL The Parkland Minor Baseball League is a league that is continually growing. This season we have added two more communities in Churchbridge and Keeseekoose. We presently have thirteen communities taking part in our baseball league. These communities are:
talk of the town Continued from Page A7 Rhein Coffee Hour at the Golden Agers in Rhein, Mon., Wed., and Fri. afternoons. Approx 2:30 – 3:30.
Our Midget (U18) division consists of the following teams: Canora, Melville, Wynyard and Yorkton. Wynyard normally plays out of the North Central League but this season they did not have other Midget (U18) teams to play so they joined the Parkland League. All four teams are all evenly matched and games have been very close often the difference of one inning separates these teams in terms of who pulls off the win. We have seen the long ball, great defensive plays at times and exceptional pitching performances. The Parkland Minor Baseball League wants to expand the Midget (U18) division even more next season. Our goal is to add more teams and more communities.

Our success over the years can also be attributed to better communication throughout our league. In 2016 we introduced our league to a website that has been customized for our baseball league. Our website is being enhanced year by year. Please take the time to review our site and look at when teams are scheduled to play their games. Come out and cheer on your team and enjoy the great game of baseball.

Canora – Churchbridge – Esterhazy – Invermay – Kamsack – Keeseekoose – Langenburg – Melville – Norquay – Preeceville – Saltcoats – Sturgis – Yorkton The success in the expansion of our league can be attributed to many factors. The first is that baseball is a great game to play. In addition, our baseball league community has worked hard in each of the communities to raise interest in the game and develop the skills of the players, allowing them to succeed and experience the shear enjoyment of the game. Approximately five years ago we did not have Bantam (U15) teams in the league to play and Yorkton had to take both teams to the North Central League in order to play ball. After years of perseverance the number of teams we now have is very impressive. This season we have 22 teams in the Mosquito (U11) division, 12 teams in the Pee Wee (U13) division, 7 teams in the Bantam (U15) division, and 4 teams in the Midget (U18) division. The Midget (U18) division has just been established this season. From the City of Yorkton records we did not have a Midget (U18) team in the Parkland League since 2004. Fifteen years later the Midget (U18) division is back.
This season we have also invited two sponsors to join us in making the baseball experience exceptional. I would like to thank Yorkton Dairy Queen and Richardson for their support that will allow us to continue to enhance our website and offer programs like the Parkland Minor Baseball League Clinic. The clinic will be held on Saturday, June 8th at the Jubilee baseball diamonds. The Clinic will be conducted by the Yorkton Cardinals (Cdn and US university players) that play in the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL). Tom Courville Parkland Minor Baseball League – President

“Greta” (R) — A handbag that’s been left on a subway is returned by a good Samaritan to Greta (Isabella Huppert), a grateful but lonely piano teacher. The do-gooder, Frances (Chloe Grace Moretz), has recently lost her mother, and Greta strikes up a friendship with the young woman. But it turns out Greta is a crazy stalker, and Frances fights to break up with her ... then things get weird. This is a psychological thriller with moments of demented levity, but it also contains gaping, level-9 plot holes that had me rolling my eyes and adding my own commentary. It sure was fun to watch Huppert’s crazy lady antics, though. And I enjoyed Maika Monroe in the role of Frances’ room-

Her abuser remains free, and as she consolidates her resolve, she tracks him down for her own kill-shot of closure. It would be easy to have made this strictly a revenge fantasy — Sadie is broken, but also strong and real. The vengeance she exacts is satisfying. While Wilde balances her vigilante with glimpses

into the battered victim beneath, director Sarah Daggar-Nickson shares a holistic focus that goes beyond the rage. “Lords of Chaos” (R) — In a story that’s as dark as the music it chronicles, Rory Culkin stars as Euronymous, selfappointed founder of True Norwegian Black Metal and spawner of the band Mayhem in mid-1980s Oslo. The film follows the black metal doctrine and its adherents that form a loose group based out of Euronymous’ music den/record store named Helvete (Hell). In a space
where dark influences are magnified, youthful nihilism can be counted on to breed true chaos. When fan-turned-band-member Varg (Emory Cohen) ups the ante in a power struggle with Euronymous, church burnings, suicide and murder result. Based on real events and starring a trio of celebrity sons and siblings including Jack Kilmer and Valter Skarsgard in addition to Culkin, it’s absolutely not for the kids. “Climax” (R) — Director Gaspar Noe’s fantasy dance drama centers around a group of dancers gathered at an old school-building to rehearse a complicated and arresting routine. The evening sees a successful rehearsal and filming, so they celebrate with copious libations, including an unbeknownst-to-the-partakers LSD-laced sangria. As the night wears on, the hallucinogenic performers degenerate into dramatics, hedonism and criminal destruction. I’d say it “stars” Sofia Boutella, but

DEAR DR. ROACH: What do you know about flesh-eating bacteria? After going to a hospital to get a mole checked, I developed an itchy rash that won’t go away. I am worried. — H.W. ANSWER: Let me reassure you that this isn’t flesh-eating bacteria. Itchy rash around a mole can be due to eczema, or it might be a fungal infection or one of several other benign skin conditions. A dermatologist can help figure out which. But, since you asked ... The term “flesh-eating bacteria” is misleading since it’s a disease, not a particular bacteria species. The term refers to a condition called “necrotizing fasciitis” (“necrotizing” means that the infection kills cells, and “fasciitis” references the con-
nective tissue in the body that the infection proceeds along). However terrifying, it is fortunately a rare condition. There are only about 1-3 cases per 100,000 people. It may occur in people who are otherwise healthy and who happen to get an injury that penetrates the skin. But it is more common in people who have a diminished immune system due to chronic illness (diabetes, kidney or liver disease, cancer, heavy alcohol use). In most cases, in people with chronic disease, it is a combination of bacteria that cause the infection. In previously healthy people, the bacteria most associated are group A streptococcus. This bacteria strain has enzymes that damage the body and has the ability to evade the immune system. It can grow very rapidly, and early treatment is paramount to stopping the infection before permanent damage is done. In some cases, amputation is necessary; in others, no treatment is effective. The disease has a high mortality rate. The particular bacteria in a person with this diagnosis are very
dangerous, and there are cases of person-to-person transmission of the bacteria, leading to additional cases, so caregivers and family need personal protective equipment. Effective treatment starts with recognition of the diagnosis. That can be hard; initial signs, such as redness, swelling and fever, can be nonspecific. Skin lesions, like blisters or bruising, can be misleading. However, a very high fever and more pain than expected are big clues to the diagnosis. Treatment is primarily surgical. Antibiotics alone are ineffective. DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent column on sinusitis argued against routine antibiotics. Your advice, while sound, does not apply to all of us. I am an MDS patient with compromised immunity. When I get sick, it takes three times as long to recover. I feel the rules may apply to “normal” people, but not all of us. What would you recommend for someone like me? — B.F. ANSWER: My answers certainly do not apply to all situations, and immu-

nocompromised individuals are an excellent example. In the case of sinus infections, it depends on the person’s exact type of immune problem. Immunocompromised individuals certainly are more likely to be prescribed antibiotics, and are more likely to be subject to diagnostic testing when things don’t go as expected. Some kinds of
immune system disease predispose people to unusual infections, which require specific treatments. Taking care of anyone requires judgment and experience, and physicians who have known their patients a long time are in a better position to judge who needs antibiotic treatment for sinus infection and who does

GENERAL HOSPITAL Ava patiently waited for the right opportunity. Monica gave Drew her blessing. Curtis stayed by Jordan’s side. Neil made a house call. Shiloh played both sides of the fence. Kristina pleaded her case. Nina and Sasha enjoyed a motherdaughter lunch. Carly was proud of Michael. Lulu went to Maxie for some advice. Julian suggested Sam would be a good bet. Franco was very confrontational. Nina faced a rude awakening. Anna felt creeped out. Willow had Lulu’s full support. Sam propositioned Jason. Scott gave Ava the support she needed. Curtis turned to Laura for help. Anna was bent on confronting Alex. Wait to See: Franco visits Kiki’s grave. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS An emotional week in Genoa City continued with the reading of Neil’s will. Rey encouraged Kyle and Lola to take over his lease, to which they readily agreed. The move went awry when their dinner caught fire, but it didn’t stop the lovebirds from celebrating their first official night together. Ana and Tessa continued to butt heads while producing a song together. Meanwhile, Mariah faced challenges of her own when her stalker showed up to confront her. Nick hired Rey as head of security for Dark Horse and asked him to keep tabs on Adam as well. As Billy, Kyle and Jack prepared for the launch of Jabot Collective, Ashley alerted them to a copycat site. Wait to See: A dangerous rivalry is reignited.

20-mega watt solar agreement signed ing First Nations-led solar generation projects. The 20 MW from this agreement is part of SaskPower’s plan to add 60 MW of utility-scale solar to the provincial grid by 2021. Last year, SaskPower and Saturn Power announced the 10 MW Highfield Solar Project, the province’s first utility-scale solar facility. The facility will be located southeast of Swift Current and is expected to be in service as early as the end of 2020. The competitive process for an additional 10 MW solar project is currently in the RFP stage. The remainder will be achieved through 20 MW of community-based solar projects, including projects through the Power Generation Partner Program. While no power purchase agreements have been signed with SaskPower under the agreement, FNPA currently has two potential solar projects under consideration. This includes a 10 MW project through the George Gordon and Star Blanket First Nations, as well as a 10 MW project led by the Cowessess First Nation. “FNPA is proud of the planning, time and resources committed by George Gordon and Starblanket Cree Nation advancing towards building their 10 MW solar farm. We are highly confident that this project will serve as a shining example of how indigenous-led power projects can meet the need of SaskPower’s electricity demands for clean sources of renewable energy,” said FNPA CEO Guy Lonechild. “For the remaining 10 MW, Cowessess Ventures Ltd. is proposing a project at an on-reserve location, which will maximize existing
local indigenous experience and further demonstrate its place as a leader in Saskatchewan’s renewable energy industry.”

SaskPower and First Nations Power Authority (FNPA) have signed a First Nations Opportunity Agreement setting out conditions for developing 20 megawatts (MW) of new utility-scale solar generation projects. The agreement is estimated to be worth $85 million over the course of 20 years. “The signing of this agreement adds to what is already an important partnership between First Nations Power Authority and SaskPower. Both are committed to generating sustainable, renewable energy resources to provide Saskatchewan with power. Reducing emissions is also a cornerstone of our province’s Prairie Resilience Strategy,” said the Honourable Warren Kaeding, Minister of Government Relations, on behalf of the Honourable Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskPower. “Indigenous people have long served as stewards of the land and can provide valuable insight into projects that are integral to generate clean energy for generations to come.” “SaskPower is proud to enter into another agreement with FNPA to secure projects that will contribute to our goal of growing our grid while, at the same time, reducing our overall emissions profile,” said Mike Marsh, President and CEO of SaskPower. “We are committed to progressive Aboriginal relations and procurement at SaskPower and we look forward to working with FNPA as we expand our solar capacity in this province.” The First Nations Opportunity Agreement (FNOA) gives FNPA the responsibility of secur-

Q: Is former NBA player Shaquille O’Neal really an official police officer? I see him on TV commenting during basketball games, but I never heard anything about him doing police work in recent years. — A.B. A: Shaquille O’Neal, best known as “Shaq,” is an honorary deputy in several states, and according to an article in the L.A. Times last year, he plans to run for sheriff in Georgia in 2020. In the meantime, he has an upcoming reality show, “Shaq Life,” on TNT. “Shaq is the ultimate example of living your biggest, best life,” said Michael Bloom, who heads unscripted and specials for TBS and TNT. Viewers will “follow Shaq as he spends his summer on a series of DJ gigs in Las Vegas, an international DJ tour, filming commercials, shooting a film, speaking appearances, hosting the NBA awards, running his
‘Big Chicken’ restaurant, spending time with his five kids and much more.” A premiere date has not been announced, so keep an eye out for it. Q: Could you please tell me what happened to the series “Scorpion”? Also, why did they say “last episode” before the season finale of “Whiskey Cavalier”? — K.E. A: CBS canceled the crime show “Scorpion” a year ago after four seasons, apparently because ratings had declined. In the meantime, star Katharine McPhee is set to tie the knot to the multiple Grammy award-winning songwriter and composer David Foster. The two reportedly took out a marriage license, so they very well may have made their union legal by now. As for “Whiskey Cavalier,” it was a lastminute cancellation after ABC decided to go with another show this fall. The romantic dramedy about two spies played by Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan has a loyal following, but not enough to become a hit for a major network. Foley and his wife, Marika Dominczyk, who

Heal with chiropractic care Did you know that automotive accidents are one of the leading causes of injuries? In 2012, more than 5.6 million car accidents were reported to law enforcement and car insurance companies, and the numbers keep growing. The attorney referral service and legal information resource Find Law says the economic cost of car accidents is estimated at $277 billion each year. In addition to causing property damage and damage to the vehicle, car accidents can result in various bodily injuries that may impact a person’s ability to function and work. Some of the more common injuries include trauma to the head, back and neck. Many different treatments can help people who have been involved in auto accidents. Including chiropractic care in treatment plans may help people decrease their pain and improve their mobility. It is important for people involved in auto accidents to seek medical care immediately even if the need for medical attention doesn’t seem readily apparent. Adrenaline can staunch symptoms, and a person may exacerbate an injury if he or she hasn’t undergone a medical exam after a car accident. Persons involved in auto accidents can visit chiropractors as part of

I was watching it at first on Netflix and then on the UP station, and now I can’t find it anywhere. Do you have any inside information on where I can watch season 11? — D.W. A: “Heartland” is a family-friendly show set on a ranch that originally airs in Canada on CBC before making its way here on Netflix and the UPtv cable channel. Twelve seasons have been broadcast in Canada, with a 13th on the way, but only 10 have been made available on Netflix so far. UPtv aired season 11 last spring, so it’s possible you might still be able to catch that season in reruns on UPtv, but if not, then rest assured that season should be on Netflix by September at the latest. their post-accident treatment plans. Chiropractors can perform various services to help people overcome their injuries. • Assess invisible injuries. Whiplash can produce symptoms hours or even days after an accident. Soreness, dizziness and pain may not register on X-rays or imaging tests. However, a chiropractor may have the tools to assess injuries that result from tension, misalignment and micro-tears in ligaments and muscles. • Reduce inflammation. Chambers Medical Group says that spinal manipulations and pressure release techniques can realign the spinal column and help release an anti-inflammatory substance through the body that can lower pain and inflammation. • Improve pressure. Manipulations also can reduce pressure in the neck area, which in turn may ease the pain of headaches, stiffness, dizziness, and even ringing in the ears, according to the chiropractors at Pain Stop Clinics. Chiropractic care may be used alone or in concert with other treatment options. Medical professionals can work together to provide a regimen that will ease pain and help patients get on the road to recovery.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try using that Aries charm to warm up the usual set of workplace naysayers, and then back it up with a solid block of facts and figures to sell your idea to your colleagues. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While nothing can deter a determined Bovine from following a course you believe in, it helps to have some supporting data and statements by trusted colleagues to make your case. GEMINI (May 21 to June

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters demand your attention as once-stable situations begin to shift. Quick action to shore things up is called for in order to avoid more problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although your financial picture begins to brighten,
“thrift” and “caution” are still the watchwords for fiscally astute Leos and Leonas to live by. Expect news about a family matter. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you try to blame a colleague for a workplace problem, make sure you have the proof to back you up. Make some quiet inquiries on your own to try to solicit more information. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to cheer up a depressed friend or downcast family member can be difficult. But keep at it, and your efforts should soon pay off in ways you might have never expected. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking a new look at an old and frequently recurring problem might lead you to consider making some surprising
changes in the way you had been handling it up till now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Despite what the naysayers might say, setting your sights on a new goal could be one of the smartest things the typically sagacious Sagittarian has done in a long time. Kids are always eager to draw pictures. They know firsthand the pleasure of putting crayon to paper (and to the occasional wall or two) to express what’s in their imagination. Enhance your children’s natural creativity and love of art by offering them new experiences using basic art supplies and unexpected items to challenge and surprise — in this case, crayons in bright colors and sandpa-
HOLLYWOOD — Couldn’t resist remembering legendary film and singing star Doris Day, hip ‘60s TV star Peggy Lipton and comedic genius Tim Conway, all of whom passed away in May. Two months after I moved to Hollywood, I was invited to shoot Doris Day when she launched “The Doris Day Show” (19681973). CBS situated eight of us photographers behind the Beverly Hills eatery La Scala, while Doris Day did
per out of the toolbox. The texture of the sandpaper will create a beautiful picture made up of tiny dots that resemble pointillism, a painting technique used by postimpressionist painter Georges Seurat. He used thousands of dots of color that you can see up close but that blend into an image when you step back, away from the painting. Try these steps to create a wonderful piece of pointillist-like art in seconds. What’s the magic ingredient? A dot, your kids might say? Uh-uh. An iron! Here’s how: Pick out an array of bright crayons. Vibrant blues, greens, purples and reds are great.
Doris Day interviews for 20 reporters inside. When Doris saw we were waiting in the dark on cold night, she insisted they send coffee and eats to us ... that’s the kind of
Create a drawing on a sheet of medium-grain sandpaper, pressing very hard as you color. Designs that use blocks of color rather than thick lines work best here. Again,
press hard as you fill in the shapes with your crayons. When you’re done, turn the sandpaper over on top of a plain, white piece of drawing or construction paper. An adult should
heat up an iron on low temperature and then iron the backside of the sandpaper as if ironing a hanky. Pass it over the back evenly and slowly for 15 to 20 seconds. Remove iron. Count to 20 with your kids, and then slowly pick up the sandpaper to reveal the picture on the paper in dot form. There it is. Sandpaper pointillism! Never mind French postimpressionists for the moment. You’ll have your own very “impressive” artist in residence. Encourage your child to look closely to see the dots, then step away and discover how they blend together. Note how crayon melted on the sandpaper, too, providing a “two for
lady she was. She wed four times, to a trombonist (with whom she had son Terry), a saxophonist, a producer/manager (whose name Terry took to become Terry Melcher) and lastly, the maitre d’ of her favorite Carmel restaurant. In 1968 (shortly after her husband Marty died), Terry turned down Charles Manson for a record deal, which made Doris fear Manson might retaliate. He did, by sending his clan to murder Sharon Tate (portrayed by Margo Robbie in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Once Upon a
Time In Hollywood,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt) and her friends who were living in the house he knew Terry had moved from, just to send him a message. Terry lived in fear until his death in 2004, and Doris confided to friends she was relieved when Manson died in 2017. Two of her greatest achievements were her best actress Oscar nomination for “Pillow Talk” (1959) and her work as an animal activist. She died May 13 at 97 of pneumonia, and requested there be no funeral, memorial service or grave marker for her.
Two days before Doris Day passed, “Mod Squad” star (1968-1973) Peggy Lipton died at 72, due to colon cancer. A year after “Mod Squad,” she wed music genius Quincy Jones and quit acting to raise their two daughters, Rashida (“Parks and Recreation”) and Kidada Jones, both actresses. She divorced Quincy in 1990 and returned to acting in “Twin Peaks” and again in 2017 in the sequel. I knew Peggy through her brother, actor Robert Lipton, and from interacting with her at events. She was always shy, but sweet and lovely

Tim was nice to everyone, from strangers to stagehands, and constantly made everyone laugh, which made everyone love him. When he heard I’d known Carol since her “Once Upon a Mattress” stage days, he asked a million questions about her and the shop. They really loved each other. Eating outdoors? Beware of food poisoning (NC) — It can be challenging to ensure the safety of food at this time of
year as temperatures soar and we head outdoors to enjoy picnics, barbecues
and camping trips. This is because harmful bacteria grow quickly in warm, moist conditions. Here are some outdoor food safety tips to help keep you and your family safe during the summer. 306-743-2242 Chill. Store your food 231 Kaiser William Ave. Langenburg, SK in a cooler with ice packs while on the go. Keep it out of direct sunlight and the internal temperature at or below 4°C (39°F). Try using separate coolers for food and drinks so that food stays colder longer. Separate. Keep your CONNECT HEARING – BRAND AD – WE HEAR YOU – NATIONAL raw meat, poultry and seaBlazers, Suits, Dress Shirts, 4.85” × 5” 05/01/19 food separate from other Dress Pants, Dress Socks, foods in containers or Belts, Dress shoes, Ties and Hoisery plastic bags to avoid leaks Sale ends June 30th and spreading bacteria.
30% off!!
Put raw meat, poultry and seafood at the bottom of the cooler to keep juices from dripping onto other foods. Clean. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Sanitize your utensils, cutting boards and work surfaces with a mild bleach solution (5 mL bleach mixed with 750 mL of water in a spray bottle) before and after use, just like you do at home. Rinse with fresh water and air dry.
Cook. Bacteria are killed by heat. Raw meat, poultry and seafood must be cooked to a safe internal temperature to eliminate harmful bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria. Use a digital thermometer and check the below Government of Canada food safety website for the safe internal cooking temperatures for beef, poultry, pork, and other foods. Plate and store. Use a clean plate when taking
food off the grill. Never put ready-to-eat or cooked food on a plate that was used for uncooked meat. Keeping several clean utensils, cutting boards and plates on hand will help you prevent crosscontamination. If you have leftovers, cool food quickly in shallow containers. On hot summer days, don’t keep food at room temperature for more than one hour. Find more information at canada.ca/foodsafety.

Q: What exactly is equity? A: Equity refers to how much you own.
In the case of home ownership, equity is the amount of the house that you actually own. For example, if you have a $250,000 home and you still owe $150,000, you have $100,000 in equity.

Keep sweet treats on the menu (NC) — Who said desserts couldn’t taste great and be nutritious at the same time? This summer, don’t let your fear of sugar overpower your cravings, as you can have your crisp and eat it too. This treat is great for everyone. Topped with

Enjoying a refreshing breakfast Breakfast has long since been dubbed “the most important meal of the day.” While some might dispute that distinction, there’s no disputing that a delicious breakfast can be a great way to begin a day. Freshness can go a long way toward making breakfast something special. For example, fresh peaches make this recipe for “Peach Bruschetta with Blue Cheese” from Christopher Hirsheimer’s “The San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market Cookbook” (Chronicle Books) something to savor. The dish also works as an appetizer and can be made with nectarines. Peach Bruschetta with Blue Cheese Serves 4 •4 slices country bread •2 peaches •Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing •1⁄4 pound blue cheese, gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese Preheat the broiler. Serves: 8 to 10 For the filling: •2 cups strawberries, diced •2 cups raspberries •2 cups blueberries •2 tbsp almond flour •1 tsp cinnamon For the topping: •3/4 cup coconut oil (plus extra to grease the pan) •2 tbsp pure maple syrup •2 cups rolled oats •1/2 cup Hemp Hearts •1 cup dark Chocolate Granola •1 cup almond flour •1 tsp. cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 baking dish with coconut oil and set aside. In a large bowl, combine strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Add in the almond flour and cinnamon and lightly toss to coat the fruit. Pour berry mixture into the greased baking dish. In a separate bowl, whisk coconut oil and maple syrup together. Add in oats, hemp hearts, granola, almond flour, cinnamon and salt and mix until well combined. Pour granola and oat

slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes. While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1⁄4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact. When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread onefourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.

of producing white asparagus, the short growing season and transportation costs from South America and Europe are the reasons why white asparagus is a little pricey.
The beautiful bunches of asparagus now appearing at grocery stores and farmer’s markets is like a personal invitation to deliciously celebrate spring. Asparagus is easy to select and prepare, and comes in a variety of vibrant colors, including green, violet, purple and white. My introduction to white asparagus came during a trip to Germany to visit Department of Defense schools on military bases. Before I became a chef and cookbook author, I was a children’s author with more than 100 books in seven languages. I visited schools and did storytelling presentations and book signings for elementary, junior high and high school students, their parents and educators all over the U.S. and Europe. It took almost a month
to complete the book tour in Germany, so my husband and I had plenty of time to take in the local culture and sample traditional German dishes. Our hosts were particularly eager to take us on a drive through the German countryside to show us the fields of white asparagus. Some people call white asparagus “the vampire of the vegetable world” because it’s grown under a thick blanket of mulch and black plastic that shields it from the sun. White asparagus never turns green because no photosynthesis takes place. The lack of sunlight not only changes the color, but the flavor. White asparagus spears are much more delicate than green asparagus. The complex process

While asparagus is available year-round, it’s much better when grown and purchased locally. Asparagus also grows wild and is commercially available fresh, frozen and canned. The stalks range in size from colossal to small. Various types and colors of asparagus can be used without any noticeable difference in taste, so mix and match colors and sizes for visual interest. Asparagus should be crisp and firm, not limp or wrinkled, with tightly closed tips. Dull colors and ridges in the stems are an indication of a lack of freshness. The stalks should not be limp or dry at the cut, and of uniform thickness. Fresh asparagus should never be washed or soaked before storing. If the asparagus is bound with a rubber band, remove it as it will pinch and bruise the stalks. If you’re planning to

use the asparagus on the same day, rinse it under cool water, pat the stalks dry with a paper towel and prep the stems. Peeling the end of thicker stalks with a paring knife or a vegetable peeler removes any woody stems and can be done up to two hours before cooking. If preparing white asparagus, make sure to peel the bottom two-thirds of each spear because it tends to have a thick and bitter skin. Smaller stalks can be broken or cut at the point where the stem naturally snaps. Asparagus can be stored for up to two days if the stalks are trimmed and placed upright in a jar with about an inch of water in the bottom. Cover the asparagus with a plastic bag and store the spears in the refrigerator. Asparagus cooks in minutes and can be prepared in the oven or microwave, steamed or boiled. Boiling in salted water is the best technique for cooking white asparagus. But like its more colorful cousins, it’s also good roasted or grilled. Asparagus tastes

A half cup of cooked asparagus contains significant amounts of folic acid, vitamin C, potassium and betacarotene. It’s also a hearthealthy food, and a natural diuretic. This versatile vegetable works well as a room temperature appetizer, the main ingredient as part of a main course, blended into a soup, or as a flavorful side dish or in a colorful salad. A quick and easy way to prepare asparagus is this Roasted Asparagus with Lemon and Parmesan. It’s a simple and delicious way to celebrate spring! ROASTED ASPARAGUS WITH LEMON AND PARMESAN •2 pounds fresh asparagus, tough ends trimmed off •1/4 cup olive oil •4 teaspoons grated lemon zest •2 garlic cloves, minced •1 teaspoon salt Reserve 1-1/2 cups sauce to serve with grilled chicken. Place chicken quarters on grill over medium heat; cook 20 to 25 minutes, turning chicken once. Generously brush chicken with some of the remaining barbecue sauce; cook 20 minutes longer, turning pieces often and brushing with sauce frequently until juices run clear when chicken is pierced with tip of knife. Mosaic supports Health Foundation Mosiac has made a major contribution toward a current Health Foundation fundraising effort. “We are very pleased to announce that Mosaic has donated $25,000 toward the digital mammography equipment The Health Foundation is currently raising money for. This new equipment is also necessary to continue the breast cancer screening program at the Yorkton Regional Hospital,” said Ross Fisher, Executive Director of The Health Foundation. The breast screening program in Yorkton is busy, averaging over 5,000 women annually.
At present, the only proven method of reducing breast cancer deaths is early detection. That is why breast screening is conducted. The new digital mammography equipment will be an upgrade over our current equipment and provide the best diagnosis available. “Mosaic is proud to continue support for The Heath Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan, as most of our employees here in the province live and raise their children in Esterhazy and area,” said Sarah Fedorchuk, VP of Public Affairs & Government Relations at Mosaic. “Our funding over the years has supported campaigns for
equipment in the areas of hematology, intensive care, neo-natal and now breast screening. We are glad to partner with the Foundation each year to help provide the best possible healthcare for all east central communities.” “We are very grateful for the ongoing support of Mosaic for our work to improve the healthcare available for everyone in our region. Certainly, this new mammography equipment is important, it will help us to maintain our services locally and it will provide stateof-the-art equipment to our regional hospital. This equipment will save lives,” continued Mr. Fisher.
