Area students awarded apprentice scholarships One hundred graduating high school students from 72 communities across Saskatchewan received Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarships this year. Recipients from the local region include; Pierce McLachlan, construction electrician, EECOL Electric (Jim Sinneave) Scholarship, Regina Trades and Skills Centre, (YRHS). Kelsey Valuck, welder, EECOL Electric (Jim Sinneave) Scholarship, Sacred Heart High School. Logan Danylko, construction electrician, EECOL Electric (Jim Sinneave) Scholarship, Yorkton Regional High School. Rylee Bunz, automotive service technician, Nutrien Scholarship, Rocanville School. Parker Carlson, carpenter, industry scholarship, Langenburg Central School. Brodie Morrow, plumber/ steamfitter-pipefitter, Peak Mechanical Partnership Award of Excellence, Kelvington High

School. Jennifer Latcheech, welder, Harold Molleken Scholarship, Kelliher School. Taylor Petracek, instrumentation and control technician, Techmation Electric & Controls Lts., Esterhazy High School. Ethan Bewcyk, machinist, Hilda Szabo Scholarship sponsored by Merit Contractors, Churchbridge Public School. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students much complete the SYA program and plan to embark on a career in the skilled trades. Overseen by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC), SYA gives students the opportunity to learn more about apprenticeship and the skilled trades. Activities range from completing practical and applied arts courses to interviewing a journeyperson to completing at least one day of on-the-job work experience. “The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to

developing a workforce that is industry-ready, trained and certified, and that meets the needs of our evolving labour market,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “We wish the students who have received SYA Industry Scholarships success in their future careers, and look forward to them becoming Saskatchewan’s business leaders of tomorrow.” The SYA Industry Scholarship program is unique. In order to redeem the $1,000, students must demonstrate they’re actively pursuing a career in the skilled trades within two years of graduation – either by completing a pre-employment program or by registering as an apprentice in Saskatchewan and successfully completing Level 1 technical training. Tesa Sloan, graduating from Cut Knife High School in June, plans to start a career as an Automotive Painter. “I am honoured to receive a Saskatchewan Youth

Apprenticeship Industry Scholarship,” Sloan said. “I am looking forward to working in the automotive painter trade, and everything else that accompanies it. This scholarship is exactly what I need to get on my feet and pursue my dream. A special thanks to all the people who supported me through the years.” Every year, educators coordinating SYA in their schools are invited to nominate at least one SYA graduate from their school. The SATCC also collects nominations from the Regina Industry Education Council, the Saskatoon Industry Education Council and the Regina Trades and Skills Centre. Since the scholarship launched in 2009, 56 industry sponsors have committed $740,000 to the fund. The Government of Saskatchewan has also invested through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunities Scholarship, bringing total contributions to $1.27 million. “On behalf of the commission board of directors, congratula-

tions to all of the scholarship recipients,” SATCC Board Chair Drew Tiefenbach said. “I also want to thank all of the industry sponsors. By supporting this scholarship, you help encourage our province’s young people to consider a skilled trades career.” Students who complete SYA receive significant benefits. If SYA graduates register as apprentices within five years of graduation, their apprenticeship registration fee is waived, their Level 1 technical training tuition is waived and they receive 300 trade time hours. The SYA program has grown significantly over the last year. At the end of 2017-18, there were more than 2,500 students enrolled. Currently, there are more than 3,300 students enrolled – an increase of 30 per cent. To learn more about the SYA Program, please visit www. saskapprenticeship.ca/youth_ apprentices or call 1-877-3630536. — Submitted

By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Saltcoats Lakeside Manor Country Fair was held last Wednesday, with a range of activities for those attending to enjoy. On the stage were a number of musicians including Butch Fleury. You could have your face painted by David Cowan. There was a miniature horse, chickens, goats and rabbits from Good Spirit Petting Zoo. Youth could try their hand at tossing rings over the heads of toy flamingos, putting balls into cups with an accurate throw, or trying ladder golf. And, of course there was food, hotdogs and hamburgers hot from the grill.

SIGN raises Treaty 4 flag

By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbors, (SIGN) in Yorkton raised the Treaty 4 Flag at its facility on Broadway Street. The ceremony was carried out on what is National Indigenous People’s Day in Canada. The Treaty 4 Flag will fly permanently with the Canadian, Saskatchewan and City of Yorkton flags. Tribal Chief Isabel O’Soup of the Yorkton Tribal Council said the flag raising was an important event. “It’s such a great honour,” she said, adding it was a great moment when Andrew Sedley, executive director of SIGN called with the idea. O’Soup said the flag is a visible symbol of the co-operation needed moving

forward, adding it is also part of the education process needed by both First Nations and non-Aboriginal. “We’re all still learning,” she acknowledged at the ceremony today (Friday). O’Soup said it is important to grow toward a new future. “Us as First Nations people, we need to forgive. That’s a big thing for us ... Then we can move forward.” O’Soup said while there is a need for reconciliation, and better understanding among all peoples, it is also important to remember “Canada is a great country, and we all make it great.” Moving forward was a theme picked up on by Yorkton Councillor Mitch Hippsley who spoke on behalf of the City. “We have to learn about our past so we can move forward,” he said, adding “we’re all in this together.”

The Treaty 4 flag will now permanently fly above the SIGN Building on Broadway Street in the city.

Powwow dancer also focused on ballet By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer D a n n i c k a Kequahtooway will be heading to the United States on a pair of dance scholarships. The 15-year-old from

Sakimay explained one scholarship will take her to New York for 10 days to train in ballet, the other will see her spend 10 days in Florida, again gaining experience in dance. In the case of the

Florida opportunity Kequahtooway said she has some work to do before the trip. She explained participants have access to a video of a particular dance, and “you have to learn it before you go.”

A member of Divadance in Grenfell, Kequahtooway was in Yorkton Friday jingle dancing at National Aboriginal Day festivities. She admitted aboriginal dancing “is pretty different than ballet,” adding with ballet “you have to train a lot to be good.” In terms of ballet, Kequahtooway said whatever she learns is important because the skills and discipline transfer to other forms of dance. “It’s the foundation of jazz, hip hop ...” she said. So what attracts Kequahtooway to ballet? “It’s the soft, flowing movement, you can let your emotions out,” she said.

Tiny House Project now complete A 350-square-foot tiny home was unveiled Wednesday to dozens of supporters and community members at Cote First Nation, near Kamsack. It marked the completion of the Tiny House Project, an Essential Skills partnership between Parkland College, Yorkton Tribal Council, and Cote First Nation. The Tiny House Project was launched at the end of January. Eight students gained hands-on construction skills as well as life and employability skills as they built the house

from the ground up. The finished home was given away in a lottery draw to community member Gloria Pelly. The tiny house features one bedroom, an openconcept living area and kitchen, full bathroom, and attached deck. Many of the building materials, tools, and appliances were donated by businesses in the area. Home Hardware in Yorkton outfitted the students with tools and safety gear, while solar panels from Living Skies Solar were installed on the roof to reduce the carbon

If desired, grill the pita bread until warm, about 1 minute per side. Spread the pita with yogurt, if desired, then stuff with the chicken, tomatoes and salad. Serves 4. Bold Berry Granita Frosty, fruity and fatfree, this heat-beating Italian ice doesn’t require any special equipment -just a metal baking pan. training, and corporate/ professional development. — Submitted •1 lemon (up to 2) •1 pound strawberries •1-1/2 cups raspberries Make sugar syrup: In 2-quart saucepan, heat water and sugar to boiling on high, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, from lemon(s), grate 2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 1/4 cup juice. In food processor with knife blade attached, blend strawberries and raspberries until pureed. With back of spoon, press puree through sieve into medium bowl; discard seeds. Stir sugar syrup and lemon juice and peel into berry puree. Pour into 9-by-9-inch metal baking pan. Cover and freeze mixture 2 hours or until frozen around edges. With fork, scrape ice at edges into center. Cover and freeze until completely frozen, at least 3 hours or overnight. To serve, let granita stand at room temperature 15 minutes or until slightly softened. With fork, scrape across surface of granita to form ice shards and spoon into chilled wine goblets or dessert bowls. Serve immediately. Makes about 5 cups. It is the season for berries. Sweet, juicy summer berries are like the healthy “candy” of the food world. Not only are berries nutritious, new research indicates that eating berries also may help stave off the cognitive decline and memory loss that come with aging. Data from the long-running Nurse’s Health Study shows that women who ate blueberries and/or strawberries delayed memory decline (from aging) up to 2-1/2 years compared with those who did not eat berries. The women gained this benefit from consuming just two or more servings of blueberries and strawberries per week. Even if you’re not worried about memory loss, berries still pack a healthy punch for just a few calories. Strawberries and blueberries are rich in anthocyanins, the pigment in plants that give them their dark red or blue coloring. Anthocyanins help move blood into the brain and have been linked to a broad range of health benefits, such as vision and heart health. Strawberries have only 22 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates, and they provide 2 grams of fiber per half-cup serving. To enjoy them at their best, strawberries must be handled with care. To wash strawberries, hold them under gently running cool water just long enough to remove the dirt. Don’t soak strawberries as they will absorb water and lose flavor.

For the best flavor, wash strawberries just before you plan to use them. Strawberries can be stored in the refrigerator for two to three days. Blackberries have 37 calories, 9 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of fiber in a half cup. Blueberries spoil quickly, so be sure to use or freeze them soon after picking. Blueberries have 41 calories, 10 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of fiber per half cup. Like other berries, blueberries are a good source of vitamin C. Raspberries have 30 calories, 7 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of fiber for every half cup. Raspberries are very fragile and easily damaged. If bought fresh, eat them within one to two days. Wash raspberries just before you eat them because they can absorb the water, which will dilute the taste. If you want to enjoy fresh fruit year-round, berries can be frozen for later use. Here are a few freezing tips: • Add 3/4 cup sugar to one quart of whole strawberries and mix thoroughly. Let stand 15 minutes and then pack into con-

tainers, leaving headspace for expansion. Seal and freeze. • Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries can be frozen whole. • Don’t wash blueberries before freezing, as it will make for a tougher skin. Wash just before you’re going to use them. You can enjoy sweet, delicious summer berries on their own, or try some of the many ways to add berries to a healthful diet. Sprinkle them on cereal, add them to yogurt, enjoy berry toppings on pancakes or use them in salads, like this recipe for Summer Berry, Pecan and Goat Cheese Salad. This dish showcases the sweetness of the berries while providing the crunch and smoothness of the pecans and goat cheese. It’s the perfect summer salad!

SUMMER BERRIES, PECAN AND GOAT CHEESE SALAD This salad beautifully showcases the best berries of the season. It’s also a refreshing accompaniment to grilled or spicy barbeque dishes. •4 large fresh strawberries, leaves removed, quartered, rinsed and drained •2 ounces fresh blueberries, rinsed and drained •2 ounces fresh raspberries, rinsed and drained •1/4 cup pecan pieces •1-1/2 tablespoons honey, divided use •2 tablespoons virgin olive oil •2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar •1 small garlic clove,

finely chopped •1/2 teaspoon Dijonstyle mustard •1 teaspoon salt •1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper •1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper •1 package (8 ounces) mixed salad greens with spinach •3 tablespoons crumbled goat cheese •1 large avocado, diced •2 tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice In a small, nonstick skillet, add the pecans and toast, stirring occasionally, until the nuts are lightly browned and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Drizzle with 1/2 tablespoon of the honey, and toast, stirring occasionally for 1 minute. Cool and set aside. In small bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, the remaining 1 tablespoon honey, the garlic, mustard, salt and black and cayenne pepper. Set dressing aside. In a salad bowl, toss together the salad greens, berries and pecans. Top with goat cheese and avocado. Sprinkle with the lemon or lime juice. Pour dressing around the edges of the salad and gently toss

Finding the perfect shoreline Welcome to another week of ‘Fishing Parkland Shorelines’. Like most of us I am a novice fisherman, loving to fish, but far from

an expert. In the following weeks I’ll attempt to give those anglers who love to fish but just don’t have access to a boat, a look at some of the options in the Yorkton area where you can fish from shore, and hopefully catch some fish.

Ah to find a nice chunk of shoreline to toss a hook and find hungry fish. 2018 PRINCECRAFT It seems like such QUORUM 23 SE a simple thing to desire PONTOON BOAT at this time of year, but THIS BOAT IS A LUXURY BOATalas the crafty fish seem LOTS OF CHROME- LITES-SEATING-BAR wise to my plans, and have not exactly been obliging 2019 VECTRA 23RL (BLACK) in regards to going after WITH MERCURY 175HP-V6 ENGINE, anything I have thrown as TANDEM TRAILERLOADED WITH MANY OPTIONS lures this spring. But, at least the clouds over head did not throw rain on the golfers, so it was a fun undertaking. And, there was the hope of a fish or two ahead. Once at the dam I thought to throw a few hooks off the sort of boat launch area but to my surprise found I was catching

salad on nearly every cast. Weeds are not unusual in area shore areas, although they usually become a problem as the weather heats up in July and August. We have had little hot weather locally through June, so the weed issue was unexpected. So rather than fight weeds I migrated to the other side of the water. As I was unloading a red-winged blackbird serenaded me, and I was thinking of digging out my long-lens for a pic, or two, when the bird decided it

was camera shy, and flew off. I have to say I have always found the birds striking in appearance, so they are always welcome companions while shore fishing. Once at the water, knowing my luck this spring has been frankly abysmal, I decided on a slightly different lure selection. I opted to use a range of Balo spoons. The lures were made in Alberta, although from some google efforts before writing this, it appears the company is no longer in business. That is unfortunate as the line of spoons were high quality, in the range of Len Thompson lures in terms of weight, which is great for casting. The Balo line has some of the triedand-true colours, red and white, black and white, but offer up some unique patterns and colours as well, so you can offer the fish Continued on Page A9

FISHING Continued from Page A8 something just a little different. In this case the Balo range did not impress any fish that might have been present as much as the lures impress me. In fact, the fish had no issue in completely ignoring the lures. Then it started to rain. It was not a hard rain, and remembering my Dad who always said fish bite better in the rain, I diligently stayed on task. I wasn’t getting soaked by the rain, but I was not enjoying it as much as a loon that swam in the area seemed too either. The clouds overhead suggested the shower would be short-lived, and it was. There are those who

• On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States, respectively, die. Both men had been central in the drafting of the historic document. • On July 2, 1900, in the sky over Germany’s Lake Constance, Count Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin successfully demonstrates the world’s first rigid airship. The 420-foot, cigar-shaped craft was lifted by hydrogen gas and powered by a 16-horsepower engine. • On July 7, 1912, Jim Thorpe wins the pentathlon at the fifth modern Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. He would later medal in the decathlon. In 1913, though, he was stripped of his Olympic medals because he had played minor league baseball. The medals were restored posthumously in 1982, 30 years after his death. • On July 1, 1951, Cleveland Indians ace Bob Feller pitches the third nohit game of his career to lead the Indians over the Detroit Tigers 2-1, making him the first modern pitcher ever to throw three no-hitters. • On July 6, 1976, in Annapolis, Maryland, the United States Naval Academy admits women for the first time with the induction of 81 female midshipmen. In May 1980, Elizabeth Anne Rowe became the first woman member of the class to graduate. • On July 3, 1985, the blockbuster action-comedy “Back to the Future” — in which John DeLorean’s iconic concept car is transformed into a time-travel device — is released in theaters. The DeLorean featured gull-wing doors and a brushed stainlesssteel body. • On July 5, 1996, Dolly the sheep — the first mammal to have been successfully cloned from an adult cell — is born at the Roslin Institute in Scotland. DEAR DR. ROACH: I get all of my medicine by mail. Since the manufacturers stress keeping the pills at cool room temperatures, I wonder what the excessive heat does to them. The medicine must cook all day in the mailbox — way over 100 degrees here in Florida. I wonder how much the pills or liquids are deteriorating, and how the effectiveness is influenced. — F.N.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Hope was stressed out over losing an object that was special to her, not realizing that Thomas was responsible for its disappearance. Meanwhile, Brooke was convinced that Thomas was using Douglas as a pawn to get closer to

ANSWER: You are right to be concerned. All medicines should be stored in a cool and dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Hormones, such as oral contraceptive pills, thyroid hormone and insulin, are among the most sensitive. Nitroglycerine is as well. Although some are shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, that’s not always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. If that’s the case for you, try to make sure the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperaturesensitive medicine, such

as the ones I mention above (ask your pharmacist about others), ask your mail-order pharmacy to send it in special packaging during warm-weather months. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old male. I had triple bypass surgery two years ago. Postsurgery complications included diabetes, pneumonia and renal failure. I spent approximately three months in intensive care. After discharge I started physical therapy, as my arms and hands had atrophied. I am still doing therapy, but continue to have limited use of my arms and hands (I cannot curl my hands without force). Any insight you have as to why I am unable to use my hands

Hope. Steffy was caught off guard when Liam invited Flo and Wyatt to spend time with them. Thomas presented Hope with a Forrester Original that he designed. Steffy thanked Flo for bringing baby Phoebe into their lives. Flo and Steffy agreed, for different reasons, that baby Phoebe was definitely a “Logan.” Emma was stunned by something she overheard. Wait to See: The secret of Baby Beth takes a dark turn.

Kristen scrambled to hide Ted. Meanwhile, Kate and Gabi noticed Nicole’s suspicious behavior. Ciara told Tripp that Claire set both fires. Rex and Sarah created an antidote for Will. Ciara and Tripp pretended to believe that Ben was guilty in front of Claire. Roman shared some devastating news with Kayla. Sami and Lucas continued to pray for Will’s recovery. Kayla informed Victor about Caroline’s death. Later, family gathered at the pub to share stories about their beloved matriarch. Claire became unhinged after Tripp broke up with her. Wait to See: Rex wants Eric to officiate his wedding to Sarah.

Prolonged immobility can lead to weakness, atrophy and even contractures (involuntary bending at certain joints, such as the elbow and ankle). Both critical illness myopathy (affecting muscles; it’s common in people who received steroids, like prednisone) and critical illness polyneuropathy (affecting nerves; it’s common in people with severe infection, like sepsis) can lead to weakness and atrophy. Medications are some-

Although most benefit is seen in the first year after loss of function, you still may continue to improve with therapy, perhaps utilizing different modalities. Definitely seek an occupational therapist if you haven’t already. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Malnutrition is common in ICU patients, not because ICU doctors and nurses don’t know to or don’t want to feed patients, but because the body may be unable to absorb necessary nutrients. Some or all of these may combine to leave lasting physical effects from a long ICU stay. Physical and occupational rehabilitation services are the key to the recovery of function.
