Long time newspaperman putting pen away By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer On a warm Wednesday evening people kept filing into the Langenburg Community Centre to the point more tables were hastily set out to accommodate the growing crowd. You might expect it was a political rally, or a midweek play production, the sort of thing that would have Bill Johnston on site with his trusty camera around his neck, and his note pad in-hand. After all Johnston has been covering events in Langenburg, and in Churchbridge, Bredenbury and Saltcoats for four decades, filling the pages of The FourTown Journal, the newspaper he founded all those years ago. And indeed Johnston, easily recognized by his shock of white hair, was there. But on this night he was not covering the story, because he was the story. The people were gathering to say thank you to Johnston who has announced the long-time community newspaper will print its last edition at the end of July, and with it he will retire. “We are very sad to lose our paper,” said Jan Layh, one of the organizers of the evening. “... We’re just despairing. We don’t know what we’re going to do.” While admitting the closing of The Four Town Journal will be a loss, Layh said she also knew that the communities needed to say thank you to Johnston for his long service. So she took the lead, gathered some volunteers from the four towns, and within weeks had the evening planned. When Layh called Bill to make sure he was available he modestly said no. “I just said ‘we have
to honour your great service,” she said, adding Bill finally agreed. Walter Farquharson was one of the committee members from Saltcoats. He said the evening was something people in the four towns needed. “It’s an opportunity to say we’re sorry that The Four-Town Journal is coming to a close,” he said, adding it was also a chance “to celebrate the exceptionally good service Bill and Lynda, (Bill’s wife), have given the entire area.” Farquharson said in many ways Johnston’s efforts have actually brought the four communities together, something reflected in the gathering with people from all four gathered to say thank you. As for the loss of the local newspaper, Farquharson said it’s not clear what happens next. “I think we’re all trying to figure that out,” he said. “It’s a big hole that’s going to be left.” What followed was thank-you’s from nearly every sector of small town life. “You can’t put a price on what you’ve contributed to our towns,” said Don Fogg speaking for the town, village and rural municipal councils. “What you have done as you have brought four communities together, to be proud of one thing, The Four-Town Journal.” Rob Fiola spoke for sport organizations reciting a long list of sports covered by Johnston through the years. “Your professionalism and dedication was truly remarkable,” he said of Johnston’s efforts. Justice Donald Layh went as far as to read a ‘letter-to-the-editor’ relating to the loss of the local paper. “I have a grievance: we are losing our cher-

Bill Johnston, a former publisher at The Enterprise in Yorkton, is retiring and that means closing the doors on The Four-Town Journal. ished newspaper. For 38 years, Bill and Lynda Johnston have been the never-failing eyes and ears of several communities, not only Langenburg, C h u r c h b r i d g e , Bredenbury and Saltcoats, but also Spy Hill, MacNutt, Marchwell and other satellite communities. The Johnston’s have habitualized us to a Wednesday fix that routinely appears in our mailboxes,” he read. “What are we going to do when we go to the post office in August and there is no paper? Four communities will suffer withdrawal. How will we function without The FourTown Journal? Living without the paper will be like living without coffee and the radio in the morning. I don’t think it can be done!” Layh then changed tact in the letter. “On the other hand, we have much to celebrate. How many other rural communities in this province – in this country – have had a brilliant newspaper editor like Bill Johnston? I have read many other local newspapers and none compare to the quality of Bill’s writing, the depth of his editorials, the pains-

taking coverage of local events. No dance recital, no bonspiel, no hockey tournament has escaped his attention,” he read. “On cold winter nights while I have sat before the fireplace enjoying a good book and a (small) glass of scotch, Bill is taking photos at curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments or dance recitals. “On warm summer weekends when I am basking at the lake with family, enjoying leisure time, Bill is sweating and swatting mosquitoes at the ball diamond, recording the names of the kids who have won the baseball tournament or at the golf course photographing the
winners of the golf tournament. He has endured the usual rains at June Daze, the heat of Laugh and Linger, the dust at the pony races in Spy Hill. At every community engagement, whether for tots or teens, at tournaments or town meetings, at concerts or cross country meets, you can find a shock of white hair – Bill – milling about with his camera and notepad in hand. What joy he has brought to so many families as he has patiently photographed children and grandchildren and has recorded their names and achievements.” In the end Layh said it was simply time to say thank you. “So, I have set aside my grievance and have reconciled myself to simply being grateful for the 38 years of community reporting that we have come to expect, but which we have done nothing to deserve,” he said. “This gratefulness is more comforting than mourning what we have now lost. Bill and Lynda have provided a vital service to our communities for nearly four decades. They have drawn communities together in a way that had never been done before. They have celebrated and recorded our achievements – both great and small. They have marked and mourned our losses. “We were never deserving of this great service. Rather, we have been remarkably fortunate to have been able to enjoy what few communities have had: a fine, sensible
and sensitive newspaper editor who has helped shape a community. “Bill and Lynda, I am sure I speak on behalf of all your readers. Thank for the great service you have provided to us. May you enjoy winter nights at home, summer weekends with your family and many years of rewarding retirement.” And then it was Johnston’s turn at the microphone. “This is overwhelming ... This has just been incredibly fun,” he said. Johnston said the newspaper he founded has been a “roller coaster ride” but with “the end in sight” there is “relief and satisfaction.” Johnston thanked his wife first. “She’s been my right hand all these years,” he said, before moving on to thank his daughters, staff he said worked with them not for them, advertisers, and subscribers, many who have become friends. As for the paper, up to its 1817th edition, Johnston said he simply produced a product reflective of the communities it served. He said, community newspapers “are mirrors reflecting back what that community is all about.” In the case of The FourTown Journal Johnston said most often it has been filled with good news, which he said “reflects what our communities are all about ... people doing good things.” He added he had “the privilege of being able to chronicle those things.”
At a community thank you event Bill Johnston said he has made many friends while publishing more than 1800 editions of The Four-Town Journal.

Bringing the art of blacksmithing to the fair By Devin Wilger Staff Writer The modern Yorkton Exhibition Summer Fair wouldn’t be possible without metal. The rides, the fences, the grandstand, all of it involves metal to some degree, from the smallest nail to the most elaborate ride. The skill and knowledge that comes with working metal all began with the blacksmith, so it’s only appropriate that a blacksmith was at the fair, showing how to make a wide range of things. Monte Wilkins was on the fair grounds making a wide range of items in a traditional way, using coal, a hand-cranked blower, handle and hammer. Wilkins said he’s always been interested, ever since he could remember. While he was only six when his grandparents sold the family farm, he said he could still remember the forge he had, and he watched the blacksmiths at the museum. While always interested, Wilkins said
he never had time and money at the same time to take the course offered by the museum, and it wasn’t until his girlfriend at the time gave it to him as a Christmas gift that he had a chance to give it a try. “I got a phone call one day asking to change my course dates, and that was the first time I knew anything about it. The rest was history.” He’s been doing it for 23 years now, and said he fell in love with the art ever since. He made nails, fire pokers, decorative leaves and other objects over the week. “Anything most people want to see, I will attempt to make it for them. If I have never made it before, I’ll attempt. If I’ve made it before, no problem, I’ll make it again.” There’s a growing interest in the art, Wilkins said, with over 600 people on the waiting list for the course through the WDM in Saskatoon. There are also private courses available, including one offered by Wilkins. He said that people interested are getting younger as well, with more
people in the 25-35 year old age bracket looking to take courses, with more women interested as well. “It has diversified a lot in what people think about what blacksmithing is. It’s not just tools and that anymore, anything that can be done with metal, people are finding out that they can do it.” The fair brings with it some challenges when blacksmithing. The sun makes it hard to see temperatures, and the colours in the metal or the fire. You could burn it or work it too cold, but he said you can feel the temperature with enough experience. “It’s something that comes with experience.” He said it can be slower than what people expect, and people need to understand that moving metal takes multiple hammer blows and it’s not a 30 second job. The length of a demonstration means that it’s an opportunity to teach, Wilkins said, and he and other demonstrators rel-
ish questions. “I love lots of questions, I like people asking them, I want to give as much information as I can. Not just about what would have been done on the prairies here but also a little history of blacksmithing throughout the ages for people, so they get an understanding on how blacksmithing has developed through the ages. At one point in time steel was so hard to make that it became more valuable than gold. People have a little difficulty understanding that until you describe the processes to make steel. Iron was easily made, but steel wasn’t. The process to make steel was so precious, gold could be found fairly easily but steel wasn’t so easily made.” While the processes of making steel has become more refined, he said that the processes used began with blacksmiths. And through the demonstration, he hopes people who took the time to watch learned a bit more about the history of blacksmithing.
Cupar man to Baseball Hall of Fame The Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame 35th Induction will be celebrated Saturday, August 17, in Battleford, Saskatchewan. Among this year’s inductees is Gary Brotzel who was born and raised in Cupar, SK. Brotzel participated in all intercollegiate sports. He moved to Regina right out of High School and took on a job and career with SaskTel. Gary and his wife Denise have 2 children, Natasha and Tanner. Between 1993 and 2004 Gary was involved with both his children’s sports activities. Tanner was in baseball while Gary himself played competitive softball himself until 2004, having achieved being a player on numerous Provincial and Western Canadian Softball Championship teams. Throughout his son’s minor baseball career Gary coached, teamed
Gary Brotzel up with Bernie Eiswirth, who also had a son playing baseball team with Tanner, and who also coached. Following high school both sons went on to college and playing baseball with their respective college .team. In order to play competitive summer baseball, both sons had
to travel out of Regina to play in the Western Major Baseball League. Gary and Bernie saw an untapped market for local players attending college to come back and play summer baseball. Gary and Bernie assembled a Board of Directors, raised finances and put together a community owned team on the field in 2005. The Regina Red Sox, first established in 1942, was reborn. Gary coached the Regina White Sox AAA Mosquito, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget divisions between 1995 and 2003. His Pee Wee team won the 1998 Provincial Championship. Other team achievements include the 2010 and 2014 Western Major Baseball League [WMBL] Eastern Division Championships and the 2011 and 2012 WMBL League Championships. His Midget team was the Provincial runner up and attended the Western
Canadian Championships in Kelowna, BC in 2003, and his team was the WMBL Runner Up in 2008. Gary was a guest coach for the Bantam Championships in Windsor, Ontario in 2000. The Western Canadian Baseball League is a summer collegiate league consisting of twelve [12] teams located in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Its roots stem back to 1931. The league evolved from several leagues including the Southern Baseball League, the Northern Saskatchewan Baseball League and the Saskatchewan Major Baseball League. In 2000, the SMBL changed their name to the Western Major Baseball League to accommodate the teams from Alberta. In 2019, the league officially changed the name to the Western Canadian Baseball League and promotes itself as Canada’s premier summer collegiate baseball league.
The Regina Red Sox is one of the Leagues flagship organizations, and has become a vibrant part of Regina’s sporting community, promoting local minor baseball and generating interest in the game of baseball for the citizens of Regina and area.
As Founder and President of the Regina Red Sox organization in 2005, Gary continues in the capacity of volunteer President with great enthusiasm, enriching the lives of many Regina youths. — Submitted

Rosebud Royals top area fastball league After starting the season 0-3 the Rosebud Royals went on a sizzling 12-0-1 record to finish league play and to be crowned champions of the Richardson Pioneer Men’s Fastball League on July 1, Wadena. After two wins on Tuesday in the Pattison Agriculture Conference against the Junior Royals, and Foam Lake Merchants, the Rosebud Royals found themselves in the A-Final of the double-knockout playoff tournament against the Balcarres Broncs. Balcarres won their two games in Western Cycle Conference Playoff against the Neudorf Posse and Rhein Rockets, in an extra inning. The Royals defeated the Broncs, 3-1 in the A-Final to advance to the League Final Game. The other teams that qualified for the Playoff Tournament with one win on Tuesday were the Rhein Rockets, Neudorf Posse, Rosebud Junior Royals, and Foam Lake Merchants.

On the B-Side, the Rhein Rockets defeated, the Junior Royals 9-0 thanks to Brett Peppler’s pitching a shutout and hitting three homers. Chad Sebalsky added solo shot. The Neudorf Posse defeated the Foam Lake Merchants 9-3, and then lost a close battle 1-0 against the Rhein Rockets with Terry Peppler throwing a complete game shutout. The B-Final saw a heated battle between the Rhein Rockets and Balcarres Broncs in a back and forth relatively high scoring affair early. The Broncs came out on top 7-6 with Colby Davidson getting the win. That Broncs win set up a rematch of the A-Final for the league
title between the Original 6 team Rosebud Royals and Balcarres Broncs, first year in the league. The Royals jumped on the base-paths early loading the bases in the first inning but pitcher Darian Belgard Cote got out of the jam and ended up pitching five shutout innings. On the Royals side James Holowaty also kept the Broncs bats at bay also pitching a shutout. In the top of fifth the Broncs nearly scored the go-ahead run, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Royce Cote hit a line drive to left field. The runner rounded second and Carson Scheschuk made the throw home just in time for catcher Scott Comfort to make the tag at home for the 3rd out. The Royals failed to score in the bottom half
By Dana Jackson Q: I always enjoyed watching the daytime show “The Chew” on ABC. I found it to be informative and entertaining. I was wondering what the cast members have been up to lately? I know Mario Batali had some issues along the way, but what about the others? — M.P. A: “The Chew” was a cooking/talk show that took the place of the ABC daytime soap “All My
Daphne Oz Children” back in 2011. It successfully aired until 2018, when it was canceled. The “Strahan and Sara” show now airs in its

Daphne — now expecting her fourth child, a girl, later this year — regularly appears on her father’s syndicated program, “The Dr. Oz Show,” in a special segment each Wednesday called “The Dish on Oz.” Carla Hall continues to demonstrate her culinary expertise on several daytime shows (including “Strahan and Sara”) as well as “Good Morning America Weekend Edition.” Michael Symon is still on television with the Cooking Channel’s “Burgers, Brew & ‘Que.”
Clinton Kelly was already famous before “The Chew” by doing surprise makeovers with Stacy London on the hit TLC show “What Not to Wear.” Most recently, however, Kelly hosted “The Spring Baking Championship” on the Food Network. “What Not to Wear” is actually coming back in 2020, but it hasn’t been announced whether Kelly and London will be headlining it. passed away after a long battle with cancer. Mel was a former Royal, huge ball fan, and even caught for James when James was starting out as a teenager in men’s tournaments. To start the season James put his dad’s initials on under his hat and dedicated the season to Mel. Royals Catcher Scott Comfort, who has caught for Holowaty since the 1990’s, said “this playoff tournament was hands down the best he’s seen Holowaty pitch and he managed to keep it up for 11 full innings against one of the toughest lineups in the league.” Holowaty dedicated the season to his father, and now has the league trophy, and MVP trophy to show for it. — Submitted dated Brinkley for a year. Mellencamp has admitted he isn’t easy to live with, but that could be why Ryan chose to live in New York while he stayed in Indiana. Nevertheless, they are now engaged and reportedly are still going strong. Q: I’ve loved watching Tom Pelphrey act ever since he played the troubled Jonathan on the daytime soap “Guiding Light.” I was thrilled when he got the role on “Iron Fist” on Netflix, but now it’s been canceled. I hope some other show is smart enough to cast him. — G.E. A: Pelphrey won two Daytime Emmys for “Guiding Light” and had been working steadily in guest-starring roles before landing a contract role on the Cinemax drama “Banshee” and then later Marvel’s “Iron Fist.” However, as loyal as daytime soap viewers are, Tom Pelphrey isn’t a name most people know. That could change as it was recently announced he’ll be a regular on the third season of “Ozark,” a show with a lot of buzz. It’s a Netflix crime drama starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Pelphrey has been cast as Linney’s brother. Perhaps one day he’ll add a Primetime Emmy to his Daytime ones.

SWF hosts youth camp On July 6 and 7, the Yorkton Wildlife Federation held its Second Annual Kid’s Camp Weekend at Good Spirit Lake “We were ecstatic to have 18 campers register for the weekend,” said SWF representative Laura Uhryn. “Saturday started off
very rainy but the clouds broke, the sun came out and the campers were able to hit the lake for some fishing. We were able to have a fish fry for supper and somehow the 18 campers found room to devour 20 pounds of homemade french fries, in addition to the fish and barbecued chicken.”
The campers were also taught how to tie fishing knots and did some 3D archery. “The kids were kept busy, made new friends and had tons of fun,” said Uhryn. “We are looking forward to next summer’s camp and have plans to put on a winter camp too.” — Submitted

Families share many things in common. Genes, environment and lifestyles are just a few examples of the things families have in common, and the U.S. National Library Medicine notes that each of these factors can provide clues to medical conditions that may be hereditary. That only highlights the importance of knowing one’s family medical history. A family medical history can help physicians identify people with higher risks of developing various disorders and diseases, including heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, and diabetes. In addition, sharing a family medical
history with a physician can help people learn about the ways they can reduce their risk for disorders and diseases their family members have dealt with in the past or are currently dealing with. Because while a family history may elevate a person’s risk for certain diseases or disorders, that family history does not guarantee each person within the family will eventually be diagnosed with such ailments. And the earlier one learns and shares one’s family history with a physician, the earlier one can adapt one’s lifestyle to reduce one’s risk of getting disorders and diseases one’s family members have been diagnosed with in the past.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have underarm odor. I wash daily, use deodorant and change my shirts daily. I use mostly cotton shirts and undershirts. I launder my shirts with soap mixed with bicarbonate sodium (baking soda) to eliminate odor. In spite of all this, deodorants seem to work for few hours and then fade away. What other solutions do you have for this problem,
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a joblinked issue could help provide better insight into
whether it’s what to use for the underarm or what to wash the clothes with? Thanks. — N.I. ANSWER: Body odor comes mainly from bacteria that grow in the moist areas, like axillae (armpits). Keeping them dry and minimizing bacteria are then the ways to minimize body odor. Antiperspirant, rather than deodorant, is effective at keeping the axillae dryer. Applying at nighttime after shower or bath may be more effective. Occasional use of a topical antibiotic to the axillae can keep bacteria growth down as well. Diet can have a role, too. Sulfur-containing foods like garlic, along
those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sag-

with onions and many curries, can cause a strong odor. As far as washing clothes, most detergents do a very good job of removing the odor-causing bacteria. DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she took my blood tests in the laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt on a daily basis? I was eating a whole avocado in
the a.m. for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please describe potassium and its job, and advise what I should do. — A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are mediumpotassium foods. However, most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease
(especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see. DEAR DR. ROACH: Does sunlight make chickenpox blisters appear more quickly? — S.V.A.
ANSWER: I have heard that, too, but can’t find any evidence that it’s true. The rash of chickenpox certainly will come, even in darkness. Sunlight can worsen scarring from chickenpox, and the affected skin is more susceptible to burning, so those with chickenpox rash should be kept out of the sun. Chickenpox is also very contagious; restrict contact with anyone who hasn’t had it or the vaccine. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.
ging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side. But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to
November 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You soon should be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assign-
ment. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worth-
while. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-themuds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know — or even just met — feel important and welcome in your life.
Rosebud Junior Royals crowned Bantam ‘A’ Boys Softball Champions For the sixth time in seven years, the Rosebud Junior Royals (formerly the Wadena Wildcats) have captured the Provincial boys’ softball title. The tournament, which was held in Wadena, featured Saskatchewan’s three ‘A’ teams, from Wadena and area, Saskatoon and Shellbrook. The Junior Royals won both round robin games on Saturday, July 6, by scores of 8-0 and 10-5, giving them a bye to the final. In the final, the boys
faced the Saskatoon Selects. On the offensive side, Luke Scutchings was 2-for3 with a double and triple. On defence, two outstanding plays by right fielder Karter Hamel and an outfield assist at home by centrefielder Griffen Helberg, stymied any chance of Saskatoon getting on the scoreboard. Koby Faubert would throw a complete game, three-hit shutout as the Royals would take the final 4-0.
Next up for Juniors is the Rosebud Royal tourney on July 14, then the Leslie Beach men’s tourney followed by the Canadian Championships in Saskatoon from July 30-August 4. The Royals open up play against Newfoundland on July 31 at 9:00 a.m. Many of the players then head to Swift Current in August 8 to represent Saskatchewan in the Western Canada Summer Games. — Submitted

When the fish aren’t biting... So what to do when the calendar turns to July and August, and the shore spots you love become thick with annoying weeds, and the smell of a shallow slough? A question certainly in need of an answer this year, as weed growth seems to be more of an issue likely due to low water levels, and that is before we get the usual heat of summer. The obvious answer is to buy a boat, but without even asking I know the response such a suggestion would garner from the better half, not to mention having to deal with a laughing banker. Typically, I leave the rods packed over summer, waiting for the cooler days of September to give fishing more of my time. This year with my success rate at an abysmal rate, if I were a baseball player my average would be well below

(The Mendoza Line is an expression in baseball deriving from the name of shortstop Mario Mendoza, whose poor batting average is taken to define the threshold of incompetent hitting.) So it might be best if I turned to activities related to fishing to hold me over to fall. One excellent option is to read some ‘fly-fishing’ mysteries; such as Cold Hearted River and A Death In Eden, both by

McCafferty “is the award winning survival and outdoor skills editor of Field & Stream … A twotime National Magazine Awards finalist, he has written articles for Fly Fisherman Magazine, Mother Earth News, and The Chicago Tribune. He lives with his wife in Bozeman, Montana. The reason McCafferty’s books top my list likely comes from his extensive background as both a fisherman, and a writer, long before starting to pen mys-
teries. “As well as being a novelist for Viking/Penguin Books, Keith McCafferty is the Survival and Outdoor Skills Editor of Field & Stream. He has written articles for publications as diverse as Fly Fisherman Magazine, Mother Earth News, Gray’s Sporting Journal and the Chicago Tribune, and on subjects ranging from mosquitoes to wolves to mercenaries and exorcism. Based in Montana and working on assignment around the globe — he recently spent a month in India trekking the Himalayas, fishing for golden mahseer and studying tigers — Keith has won numerous awards, including the Robert Traver Award for angling literature. He has twice been a finalist for a National Magazine Award,” details the biography on his website. McCafferty grabbed my attention a few years

back when I read his first fiction novel The Royal Wulff Murders. The book, which draws its name from a trout fly pattern which figures into the mystery’s storyline, introduced parttime river guide, parttime nature painter, and part-tome sleuth Sean Stranahan, and he remains the key figure in the two latest books, numbers six and seven in the outstanding series. My interest in McCafferty as a writer, and Stranahan as a character only grew with the second book The Gray Ghost Murders released in 2013 followed by Dead Man’s Fancy in 2014 and so on until the two latest gems. Grab any of McCafferty’s Stranahan books for a relaxing mystery read instead of actually fishing. Another option is to pull out a board game and as fisherfolk, why not a game that is about our water passion? If you are on a break from riding around in a boat tossing spoons into the water in hopes a pike will attack it, or are sitting in the cabin waiting for a rain to pass, well this game might be just the ticket. So what is this game all about? “You’ve secured your spot as a competitor in the world-renowned Coldwater Crown fishing tournament, and the contest has just begun! Continued from Page A8 waters, but it’s guaranteed the fish will be biting,” details the fluff in the rulebook. As in fishing, he who catches the most and biggest fish, gets bragging rights for the day. What designer Brian Suhre has accomplished here is to mimic the actions of a real fisherman on a game board. Frankly, I was skeptical it was possible, but Suhre manages it in almost every sense. Players get to fish in four different areas; river, lake etc. with a definite element of luck on what species you catch, and how large the fish is, which of course is exactly as it is in real life. You can’t always fish where you want to either, as other players may have beaten you to the favoured spot, again nicely reflecting reality. Tagged fish are good, if you have the right coloured tag at game’s end. This is a game that mimics a fishing tournament, so you can earn points at the end based on size, species caught etc. You require bait, and when you are out of it, you need to sacrifice at least part of a turn to essentially get to the bait shop for more. It really all comes together in a rather bangon representation of actually being out fishing without the sunburn, mosquitos, or touching slimy jackfish. Coldwater Crown surprised and impressed me, and is flirting with top-five games of 2019, at least six

What are the keys to succeeding as a businesswoman? The appetite for risk, the love for a good challenge, the desire to succeed, the longing to be one’s own boss, the appeal of a better balance between work and family life, and, most importantly, the immense passion for one’s job — these are the driving factors that are increasingly pushing women to enter the business world. Today, many women enjoy great success and inspire others to follow in their footsteps. But how do you become an accomplished businesswoman? Entrepreneurs normally have several
essential qualities in common, starting with an unfailing desire to succeed. Self-confidence and leadership are two other important characteristics to have to get ahead in the business world — an industry that is still largely male-dominated. And that’s not all! To succeed, women must master the art of organization, sales and networking. But above all, they must demonstrate a high level of creativity. Furthermore, successful businesswomen aren’t only conscious of their capabilities; they’re also
aware of their limitations. In other words, they aren’t afraid to delegate tasks that fall beyond their expertise to others. Being an entrepreneur means surrounding yourself with the right people, specifically trustworthy people whose skillsets contribute to the company’s prosperous future. Lastly, it’s no secret that the recipe for success includes a lot of hard work. Successful businesswomen are completely invested in their company and know the value of sacrifice. So, think you have what it takes?

Istace tops Asessippi disc golf event The annual Asessippi National Disc Golf Tournament was held Saturday. “We could not have asked for better weather for our annual tournament with 18 players participating in three Divisions,” said Rick Goraluk, evet organizer and co-owner of Asessippi Beach and Campground near Inglis, MB., where the course is located. “In singles play round we had 11 in the Open Division, three in the Women’s and four in the Masters.” First place in the Open Division went to Josh Istace of Moosomin, SK., with a minus-3 score of 54.
Second went to Yorkton’s Nick LeClerc with a par score of 57, and third went to Sabastian Leimhofer on his home course, with a score of 58,
with fourth going to Chris Istace of Moosomin with a score of 59. In the Women’s Division Sharon Enns was the winner with a score of 72. And, in the Masters Division Karl Kreutner shot a score of 63.

In the ‘Closest to the Pin’ competition it was Trevor Lyons of Yorkton who put his disc within 12-feet of the #2 basket. “We then proceeded to a doubles round where Chris and Josh Istace, (a father and son duo), took home the first place doubles challenge with a -7

The new course is a nine basket lay-out, with Prodigy baskets. Christine Zangl, with Sun Hills Resort said they wanted to add something to the resort that was available to virtually everyone. “We wanted a family friendly game that was both fun and challenging
for the people in our community, and I think we definitely achieved that,” she said. Zangl said it was also a pleasant surprise how quickly the course came together. “We were very surprised by how easy and quickly the design and installation came together,” she said. The course was designed by Trevor Lyons and Calvin Daniels, with some preliminary help from Adam Daniels. There are plans to add
to the course moving forward too. “We’re also looking forward to beautifying the course in the coming years,” said Zangl. But, in the meantime residents are just happy to be out playing disc golf. “Everyone in the community is very excited to have this course,” said Zangl. “Its beautiful scenery matched with a fun game.” The official grand opening of the course will be Saturday, July 13. — Submitted

Thomas Hazlett tops GX94 Star Search By Cory Carlick Staff Writer Thomas Edward Hazlett’s electrifying, spectacular stage performance held the packed Farrell Agencies Arena spellbound with astounding vocal skill and presence at GX94’s Star Search, closing out the Yorkton Exhibition Saturday. Within a few bars of his first song, the entire energy in the auditorium shifted as the charming, unassuming Hazlett strode onto the stage, proceeding to blow away the entire GX94 judging panel with a commanding performance and presence that held the stunned audience in a gripping trance. The British-born cowboy, despite his dazzling performance, was charmingly humble. Clearly in disbelief at his well earned win, if anyone were entitled to a little bit of immodesty after such a sage sweep, it was Thomas. Any ego that could have been an expected presence in another performer clearly wasn’t in his nature. Thomas, visibly starry eyed and overwhelmed, was taking it all in as a man who just loves to perform. That infectious energy, however, was not lost on the audi-
ence...or the judges. Hailing from the large English industrial town of Stockton-on-Tees in the Northeast of Britain, on the north bank of the River Tees roughly 25 minutes from Newcastle, the call and romance of the West was too strong to stay away. Hazlett followed his calling, moving to Canada in 2014 to settle down with his wife in Pelly. “I didn’t start actually singing until I was seventeen because I was too scared to,” Thomas admitted. “That was my mam who kicked me into doing that as well. She sings, and she sings fantastically; and that’s where I picked up my singing gift as well.” The win, as might be expected, will take some time to process. “I don’t think it’s really hit me yet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely amazed and actually, I still don’t really believe it. I think by the time I’m driving home I’ll finally go, ‘Woooooo!’ But right now, it’s just...it’s a mix of emotions. I don’t know; I feel sorry for the people who didn’t win, but at the same time I think they were just amazing as well.” As modest as Hazlett was, he was correct in his assessment of the skill of the

a soulful, emotional performance, well felt by the audience with warm, smooth vocals. Containing a raw power that did justice to the difficult but powerful classics he sang, he recalled the struggle with getting his performance to the point he felt did justice.
Thomas Hazlett competitors on stage. The competition was stiff indeed, with strong performances across the board with strong vocals and presence. Rebecca Brooks of Hamiota set the bar at the beginning of the competition, belting a powerful, commanding performance. Mandy Noelle’s stirring performance held the audience with a grip and presence similar to Hazlett’s. Several concert goers couldn’t stay in their seat, having to get up into the aisles to dance. This particular reporter, admittedly, also had difficulty keeping his feet still. Jesse Genaille of Swan River delivered
“I just couldn’t get it,” said Genaille to the audience in introducing his second song, but after a sad incident, he was able to do it. Not surprisingly, he was able to summon that strength to deliver a pitch-perfect performance. Strong performances abounded from the 16 year old Haley Chuchmuch, who delivered an emotional set, along with a raucous, spirited performance by Kris Paul of Roblin, Manitoba. The roster was kicked into second gear with a powerful performance by Saltcoats’ own Erick Van Caeseele rounding out the evening, made picking the winner a difficult task indeed. Still, even with all that competition, if his award-winning performance at GX94’s 2019 Star Search is any indication, this won’t be the last we hear of Hazlett. And for music’s sake, his future looks very bright indeed.

HOLLYWOOD — Despite the star power of Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and Sophie Turner, “Dark Phoenix” (the 12th in the “X-Men” franchise) laid an egg at the box office. “X-Men: Apocalypse” (No. 11 in the series) cost $178 million and grossed $544 million, while “Dark Phoenix” cost $200 million and grossed only $140 million in its opening week.
